Welcome to your
Oh, Opgraven, this is a most interesting joint dream, wouldn’t you say? I would not have expected this pair to have such a connection, and yet it seems obvious now, doesn’t it? Both are dealing with ghosts, in their own way. Oh, yes, and hunters with magi is always such a fascinating combination, isn’t it? Let’s see if we can’t help them face their fears, ahuhu~
Ah, just a peaceful evening in the woods for Luca. Nightbirds chirped, the wind rustled leaves in the trees, and the sky glowed with a deep green hue. It was chilly, but otherwise nice. How did he get here? Well, that didn’t matter. What did was the cabin he saw, that looked oddly … familiar? But he knew he’d never seen it before. A simple wooden cabin with a porch and a few windows. A figure would emerge from the door, and stand in shock upon meeting Luca’s eyes from the short distance across the lawn.
“S-son?” Luca’s father would say. “Is it really you? Or am I dreaming again?”
Now, if Luca approached, his father would welcome him, but before the magi could embrace, a gunshot would ring out, louder than a train. Where did it come from? Luca’s father fell to his knees, revealing to Luca the figure that had walked up behind him, smoking gun in hand. Before he hit the ground, his form would dissipate into a fine mist, his eyes locked on Luca before they too disappeared.
Daniel Caim smiled. “I would run if I were you, Magi. Come on, make it fun for me.”
It wasn’t the real Daniel; that man was trapped inside this shell, watching the actions his body performed, but unable to do anything about it. He couldn’t stop the trigger, he couldn’t avert the gun; he was a prisoner in this false form, and yet he could taste the spoken words on his tongue.
Whether or not the magi ran, the Daniels would separate. Daniel would have control of his body once more, and could speak with his doppelganger, who looked exactly like him, save for the extra facial scars, which glowed a faint, red color.

It was a beautiful evening, even if it was only a dream. A cool wind gently ruffled his hair, and rustled through the towering trees, and a few birds sang… In the odd green twilight, all was peaceful. Perhaps Nevyne had chosen to be kind to him tonight…? Although wasn’t it strange he knew he was dreaming? And with such clarity…
Battling an unsettled feeling, Luca wandered onward through the woods, tail swinging freely behind him and hair bouncing lightly against his back in its ponytail. A cabin in the distance had caught his eye, familiar but not, and served as his current destination. A warm glow filtering through the windows suggested someone might be home, but it wasn’t until he was almost to the porch that they appeared.
Recognition struck instantly, stopping him dead in his tracks as a knot started forming in his stomach. Short black hair, graying and slightly messy, a gentle smile framed by shallow wrinkles left from its many predecessors, deep blue eyes so very like his own… Luca would have known the figure anywhere, and seeing him here now brought up an old sort of guilt he hadn’t felt in full force for a good while now. It set his eyes stinging and constricted his chest, making it hard to breathe, let alone speak. He managed a single, choked word around it: “Dad…?”
Perhaps the goddess of dreams had not been so kind this time after all. You’re dead, he wanted to say as his agonized gaze dropped to the ground. As much as he wanted to move forward— to fling himself into his father’s arms— Luca couldn’t bring himself to do so. Guilt and misery kept him frozen in place, save for the shaking in his shoulders. You died, and all I did was run…
He opened his mouth to try speaking again, but a gunshot quickly cut him off. It rang in his ears while he stared horrified at a scene he’d witnessed once before, similar but different. His father dropped to his knees, blood oozing through his robes, only this time Luca could see the pain and shock on his face. He fell to his knees too, reaching out to catch the body, but it disappeared before he even made contact. For a few moments, he stared at the spot it had once occupied, but his eyes snapped up instantly as a voice reminded him of the murderer’s presence.
Had he been in a clearer state of mind, he might have recognized the man, but in that time all he saw were the smoking barrel of a gun and red-glowing scars. “Run,” he’d said. And run Luca did, with hardly a thought as to where he was going other than “away”. Away from the cabin, away from the Hunter, away from the ghost of his father.
Just like always, a dark little voice whispered in the back of his mind. Another tried to combat it, saying, No. No! It’s just a dream! But then, people had been dying in their dreams lately, hadn’t they? The thought did little to ease his fear as he ran, weaving through the once peaceful forest as fast as his legs could carry him.

The smell of gun smoke and blood, the flash of a weapon’s discharge, the rush of satisfaction from a shot well-placed. In the moments just after the kill, Daniel felt it all but didn’t at the same time. He pulled the trigger, but his muscle weren’t his own. He smiled, but felt none of the joy. He spoke, but the words weren’t his. He told the Magi to run, to make it interesting for him. And the Magi obliged the words not his own.
Wait, don’t give him what he wants! He wanted to so badly to scream the words that would save the Magi; to run was to encourage pursuit. It would incite a hunt that he, or rather his doppelgänger, would take great glee in. He knew, because the two of them were opposite sides of the very same coin with the only thing separating them being a simple choice to remain a hunter or turn away for a new life. He knew the darker version of him well and it made him want to deny it could ever be true.
And then, one became two, and Daniel was separated from himself. He stood there silently as the Magi continued making his escape. Then, he turned to face his double with hands drifting a touch closer to Black Hammer, perfectly replicated by the weapon in the other’s hand. He knew better than anyone just how dangerous he could be and wouldn’t be taking any chances.
“Why?” he asked.

Welcome to your
Luca’s run through the forest would not be a silent one; the voices in his head were echoed by the birds in the trees, sitting and watching the young magi run by. They would call out in mocking voices, similar to his, or his father’s but shrill and … off.
You left me again, Luca!
Why didn’t you try to help me? Why didn’t you stop him?
You always run. Always! Did you not love me, Luca?
Coward! Coward! Always running!
No matter which way Luca went, there was only forest. Mocking birds, growing louder into a symphony of shame. There was always a sound of rustling branches or brush, but he could never see a figure around him to make the noise.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s doppelganger would simply watch Luca run off, a smile on his face. He spoke to Daniel without looking at him.
“Why?” He said. His voice rumbled with something dark, something that made the voice sound off, and yet familiar all at once. “Don’t ask questions you know the answer to; you felt that thrill. You feel it now, don’t you? If you did not desire the excitement of your old life, I would not exist. And here I am, strong as I ever was.”
He laughed, a low, rumbling laugh that started in his chest.
“If you won’t admit it, then prove it. Make it interesting for me. Find that Magi. If you really wish to repent, then find him before I do. You remember how to hunt magi, don’t you? Hah, of course I know the answer to that.”
If Daniel shot, the clone would disappear. Otherwise, he would walk towards the forest and fade out from existence, leaving Daniel in silence.
Luca would be the first to find the building, and would recognize it as the front entrance to his clinic. The inside was a larger version of a patient room, with no other doors. He would see two things; Daniel’s figure phasing through the back wall, and another figure lying on a medical table- his mother. However she was … alive, given her cries of pain and squirming, but there was a substantial amount of blood on her, and leaking down onto the floor.
Daniel would find it next, and it would be a much shorter walk than Luca would have taken. If he entered, he would come in the door behind Luca, about half a minute after him.

Voices and sounds trailed after Luca no matter how fast he ran, no matter which way he turned. Mocking, taunting, berating. He wanted to scream. To tell them all to shut up. Eventually his pace slowed, but only because running around blindly as he had been would exhaust him faster. If only his heart could do the same, but between the ongoing screeching of the birds, and the sourceless rustling, such a thing seemed nearly impossible at the moment.
He kept moving, working to keep his pace at a controlled jog until something actually jumped out at him. Considering the temptation to jump out of his skin with every slight movement in the dark, it wasn’t easy.
Coward! Coward! Always running!
Shut up. Shut UP!
A clinic appeared— his clinic— and Luca slowed to another halt, stopping just inside the doorway. His eyes landed immediately on the bloodied figure of his mother, and he took a half step forward before logic caught up with him. No matter how horrible all this was, it wasn’t real. He repeated this mantra as he backed away from the scene, and the Hunter who had appeared across the room. It’s not real. It’s not real…

Daniel wanted so badly to empty each and every chamber of his revolver into his opposite’s back as the man walked away. Things would’ve been so much easier for him if he could. Even though he was vaguely aware he was dreaming, even though he knew that this copy of himself wasn’t real, there was some dark part of his subconscious that knew the man was right. He did feel a thrill when the dream Magi fell and an even greater one when the thought of hunting again. The need to wet his fangs and taste blood again sometimes threatened to consume him even after leaving the hunters. And here he was with those desires made real in the form of a dream man that took his shape. Prove me wrong, the man said. Daniel was just about to do so by actually following up on his desire to kill his double when the man just suddenly disappeared literally into thin air. Now alone, the former hunter stood in silence, glaring devilishly at the spot where his newest enemy had been. “Alright, you wanna play, huh?” Daniel snared, drawing both Black Hammer and another of his smaller revolvers. “Okay then, I’ll play with you. But there’s only enough room for one alpha wolf here.” He took a deep breath through his nose and took in the fragrances of the forest. Tree sap, fallen leaves, the earthy scent of decay. The smell of himself, both real and not. Another scent that didn’t belong in the natural setting. It was all the information that Daniel needed to track his target. He set off in a sprint like a wolf on the trail of its game. There wasn’t much distance to cover and he soon found himself outside a clinic that was oddly out of place surrounded as it was with timber and foliage. The Magi was already backing away towards the door. A hint of copper pervaded the air just beyond the door, probably blood. And at the far end was the reflection of his deepest, darkest longing. “Found you, you son of a whore!” Both of his weapons came up in one motion and discharged a second later. Two pieces of hot lead tore past the Magi in front of him and in the direction of the dream-formed Daniel; both were explosive, both aimed at the wall rather than the man. Nevyne - Luca Burke

“Found you, you son of a whore!”
The sudden cry at his back made Luca’s blood run cold, and sent him sprawling to the side as he dove out of the man’s way. A pair of bullets tore past as he scrambled away, practically scuttling across the floor until his back hit a wall. Across the room, the far wall exploded, though whether it was because the Hunter had missed, or had intentionally fired past him, he had no way of telling. At least there were no longer two of them… Although one was more than bad enough. He shrank a little further into the corner, thinking he didn’t particularly fancy meeting a fate similar to the building’s back wall.
It was growing increasingly difficult to ignore the phantom of his mother, too. Real or not, the urge to help her remained. He wanted to! He wanted to so badly, but… It’s a trick, Luca tried to rationalize, struggling to keep his eyes on the hunter, and not his mutilated mother. It’s a dream. There’s nothing you can do! No one to save. But the wounds… the wounds looked so bad, and she was in so much pain…
No! No no no! Focus on the Hunter, dammit! He's the one you have to worry about. Forcing himself to his feet, Luca began edging away from the man, eyes practically glued to his firearm, waiting for the barrel to shift towards him.

“Gods damn it!” Daniel shouted. “Get back here and fight coward!” He bared his teeth in a vicious sneer. His prey had alluded him and his mood turned abysmal as a result. The arid smell on the air did nothing to help. He couldn’t track his quarry, could scarcely concentrate on anything beyond the choking scent of ash and smoke, and couldn’t even sense a trap coming even if he could focus. And that infernal racket!
He turned his wrathful gaze upon the woman writhing and moaning and screaming and making it more difficult to find his center again as she lay on the bed. Then, his gaze turned to the young magi that he’d followed with a scolding remark forming on his lips. He saw how the thing had scrambled away and it sickened him to his core. Someone so weak—so incompetent—couldn’t possibly be allowed to live freely.
The words died in his mouth as recognition bloomed in his mind’s eye. This was the same magi that helped in Camlorn when he last passed through the area. His arms dropped limply to his sides while his expression softened from one of disgusted irritation to… what was a good word? Sympathy? Pity? It didn’t really seem important. This one wasn’t worthy prey in any case.
Daniel shook his head. He shouldn’t have been having these thoughts, damn it! That life of blood and wickedness was supposed to behind him.
“I’m not going to hurt you.” The words were weak an unconvincing, even to himself. Then, he stood straight with squared shoulders as he turned to face the magi. “You hear me? I’m not going to hurt you. That other guy… He might look and sound like me, but we’re different. I left that life behind.” His shoulders sagged a bit.
“At least, I think I did.” Daniel followed the path of the magi’s fearful gaze and realized that his words and action might not align, so his holstered both weapons as a token of peace.

The Hunter was screaming, but not at him. So… had he not been the target after all? It was a small relief, if so, but the feeling remained overshadowed by fear and mistrust. As the man’s dark gaze turned on the image of his mother, Luca felt tempted to place himself between them, but any and all action stopped the moment those cold brown eyes settled on him. He could practically taste the contempt rolling off him in waves, and despite it all, it sparked a little anger of his own. He was not the monster in this dream, and being looked at as though he were made his blood boil. But then recognition struck, and the feeling waned, somewhat. This… this was the man from Camlorn. The one who’d brought out that injured girl from the collapsed building, crying for help… And it seemed he remembered those events too, if the sudden shift in his expression was anything to go by. Still, Luca wasn’t about to just forget what he was, and how he’d acted, especially considering the phantom hunting him was his double. Luca’s lips pursed, arms crossed, and eyes narrowed at the weak attempt at placation. To say he was unconvinced by the man’s words would have been a gross understatement. “Right.” The word was terse and cold, and even when the guns were stowed, he refused to relax all that much. His eyes flicked back to the hole in the wall momentarily, while his tail lashed agitatedly. “… You don’t sound so sure. Why should I believe you?” Daniel Caim

“Well, if you’d rather that I left you to the other guy, just let me know so I can get on with this little nightmare of mine,” Daniel said dryly. “But I may be forgetting a little detail.” He tapped his chin thoughtfully for a few brief moments. Then, the sound of his fingers snapping made itself known.
“Oh right! There’s been a bunch of people dying in their sleep lately. And the both of us happen to be dreaming right now, right? I don’t think it’d be all that hard to put two and two together.” Daniel pocketed his hands and glared at the magi. “So tell me which one you’d rather be left alone with: the obviously psychotic hunter that wants to kill you or the retired veteran trying to prove that he’s not insane?”
Daniel tried to breathe through his nose out of sheer habit and he got a nice taste of ash for it. It clung bitterly to the back of his throat, which worsened his mood considerably. I hate all this fucking dust, he thought.
“Either way, I’d like to wake up in the morning, and the best way to do that might actually be to work with you. You can go back to being a suspicious little coward back in the real world after this for all I care.”

Inwardly, Luca’s temper rose to the bait his companion provided, snapping and snarling, and wanting to lash out. To some extent, he probably deserved a bit of the venom behind those remarks, but as it was, he wasn’t exactly in a mood to realize or accept that. Outwardly, however, he merely ground his teeth and flicked his tail, while his fingers dug into the flesh of his arms. “I am aware,” he stated coldly, struggling to keep his voice from shaking, “of the situation, thank you.” Shouldn’t have said anything, his self-doubt whispered. Shouldn’t have asked. But it was too late to do anything about it now. So Luca shut his eyes and took a breath, despite the smoke that stung his nose and throat, working to contain the years’ worth of bitterness welling up within him. Better a coward than a murderer. And even if I could fight, it’d be bastards like you telling me it’s wrong, wouldn’t it? That I’m too dangerous to be allowed to live? In… out… His eyes reopened after a moment, still glaring dully, but at least now it felt safe to speak. “What do you propose we do, then?” Oh brave, glorious ex-serial killer? Daniel Caim

Daniel continued to glare at his fellow dreamer before looking away and beginning to pace pensively. The bond keeping them from one another’s throats was tenuous at best and likely to dissolve at any given moment, but it would have to do for the time being. Daniel knew just how difficult a fight with himself in prime condition would be and he was sure that it was one that he’d barely be able to win alone. With a little help he might actually be able to drive himself back. He shook his head. All this talk of duplicates and the like was making his head do laps around itself.
“Alright, now that we’ve got a moment to breathe, we should come up with a plan,” Daniel started. “But that won’t be easy if we don’t know what the other is capable of.” He gestured to his firearms. “As you can probably guess, I’m pretty handy with a revolver. My nose is also a lot better than you’d think it is. Come’s from being a hunter back in the day. How ‘bout you? What’s your gimmick?”
The hunter realized that he’d forgotten something crucial. “Oh right. Don’t know if you care or not, but the name’s Daniel.”

Welcome to your
Nevyne watched from an invisible perch, her chin resting in her hand as she considered the pair. A hunter and a magi, and they didn’t even kill each other right away! How interesting… But the tension is there. Should I poke, or let it play out? She reached up to pet Opgraven as she hummed. Decisions, decisions… Oh, what’s that, Oppy? Ahuhuhu~! Oh, how splendid! Brilliant idea!
For a time, nothing changed about the scene; Daniel’s twin did not return, Luca’s mother writhed and moaned in pain, the blood pooling an impossible amount on the floor. A light breeze blew in from the hole Daniel put in the wall. If they wished to continue to discuss, and attempt to get along, Nevyne would watch with interest. However, it was time to stir things up for the pair.
They would both catch the sudden silence that filled the room as the background noise of cried pains went silent. She was not, however, dead. In fact, she was now standing upright in front of the cot, her eyes trained on Luca. Well, they would be her eyes, if she had any; instead they were just bleeding holes. She stood in silence for a time, then raised a finger to point at Luca.
“We knew you were a coward, Luca,” she said. Blood ran down past her cheeks, some dripping to the floor, some trailing into her mouth. “But you would leave me to suffer, too. Wretched child. Coward. You don’t really help anyone, do you?”
She reached behind her, over the cot, and onto the counter, where she grabbed a long, wicked-looking scalpel, that seemed several sizes too large to use as a medical instrument. She took one lurching step forward towards Luca.
“We loved you, but you hated us, didn’t you? That’s why you let us die. That’s why you let me suffer!”
She took another unsteady step towards the magi, then another. She didn’t seem to show any sign of slowing down, and really, given her wounded state, she shouldn’t even be alive, let alone walking or speaking.

Luca blinked and stared. One brow twitched upward. “My… gimmick?” If context were any indication, he supposed he was being asked about his combat ability. Joy of joys. Exhaling through his nose, he answered, “I’m a healer. I… heal people.” In other words, he was quite possibly useless at the moment. The magi attempted to ignore that thought as he added, “And I’m a decent runner, when I need to be…”“I’m—“ The screaming stopped. While earlier it had been filtered out as background noise, now that it was gone the silence was deafening. Trying and failing to swallow a rising sense of dread, Luca turned around to find his mother had moved. What little color there was in his cheeks disappeared as he stared into the empty sockets of her eyes, and he very nearly flinched when she raised a finger toward him, despite the fact that the action itself was relatively slow. “I’m not…” he protested weakly. He tried again, stronger and sharper as he remembered his anger. “Shut up!” While he backed away instinctively with every step the nightmare took forward, Luca’s hands curled into shaking fists. Fear was beginning to take its toll again, now that the phantom was armed. “You’re not her! You’re not real!” I was a child! his thoughts cried, What was I supposed to do? His eyes had started to sting, and throat constricted until it almost hurt to breathe. When next Luca spoke, his voice cracked. “There was nothing I could do…” Daniel Caim Nevyne
