The Rules
Magic and machine at war  CBOX RULES
1. Language is to be kept at PG-13. Swearing is allowed. However, when it's used in excess is when a rule is broken. Every single post you make/every other word can't be a swear word.
2. Respect. Sexism, racism, religious intolerance, lgbt intolerance, and all other negative -ism's are not allowed. You're allowed to disagree with, say, a political view but you will not focus on it if discussion upsets the community's health, shame the other party, insult, or be hateful. You want a soap box for being hateful? Go to a youtube comment section.
Respect II. If someone asks you to drop a topic or cease "huggling" them, do so.
3. No antagonists. This should be obvious through the Respect rule but we're clarifying. If you have a problem with someone or something on the site do not make a large spectacle of it. That's what children do and staff are not paid to babysit children here. Instead contact a staff member through a private means and we will be able to help you from there. If you do cause drama or trouble on site, you will be warned first and then banned if the problem persists. Restating for sake of clarity: If you want to be antagonistic go to a youtube comment section. We are a website for creative writing and role playing. This is not a debate club or a soap box.
4. Feel free to express friendly love to each other, not feely love to each other. Describing actions that are sexual in nature are not tolerated. If "hawter" topics are to be discussed in the cbox at all they will be expressed in a mature manner. We assume our member base is at a certain level of maturity due to the heavier and more serious themes such as racism and genocide. I know we all get goofy, especially as the nights get later but this is important. PG13, loves.
5. Patience. Do not harass other members to reply to your posts. If you wish to leave a single reminder that the thread is there after a couple of days, that's okay. But if we see a daily reminder where it crosses the line to bothering them, disciplinary measures may be taken. If you make the mistake of harassing staff the admins/mods/DM's will purposefully knock back your request by 24 hours. Do not overly harass us about market requests, application approvals, etc. We have eyes, we can see them. The staff are human beings with personal lives, not computer programs.
Patience II. No complaining or whining about members not responding to your threads. The above rule specifies about harassing the member. However if the member is not around and you're just vocalizing your annoyance, unsurprisingly, this gets annoying very quickly to everyone else. We have liquid time line for a reason, doves. Make another thread or plot with others if you're waiting on replies.
6. Ideas. The staff are always open to hearing friendly suggestions or creative concepts. We welcome them in fact. Quite a few have been approved since the site has opened. However if you only mention them in passing there's a good chance they'll get buried and forgotten about. This does not mean you should spam the cbox your idea over and over. On the contrary we have a specific home for such things, the Suggestion Box located towards the bottom of the site's main page though I would like to make something clear. The website is not broken. The website is not incomplete. The website is not in dire need of any sort of "fixing" and we are not flailing aimlessly until we are lucky enough to be saved by your words. Please keep that in mind when you're wording your suggestions and keeping your tone in check. Your suggestions are just that, your personal opinionated suggestions. If you don't plan on staying with the site unless an idea of yours is approved feel very much free to exit our rp home and we wish you the best of luck finding a new home that meets your personal vision.
7. No cbox stalking. A stalker is an individual who is not active on the website itself but will continue to chat in the cbox. This does not include visitors or newcomers who are obviously checking out the site before deciding to join. There is a very clear distinction. The cbox's purpose first and foremost is to assist in the rp process (discussing plots, etc). If you do not plan on making a character here, we ask that you please move onto a site that is more your groove. We know we have a wonderful member base but this is being asked out of respect for the site's purpose. If a member hasn't made a single post within a three week time period but has proven to be active in the cbox with no absence post explaining a delay in responses, they will be banned from the cbox until a new post has been made. This rule is being implemented after getting multiple requests for it from faithful and active members. IC CBOX RULESWhat is the difference between the "cbox" and "ic cbox"?The cbox is a "chat box" for members to communicate in. The ic cbox is the "in character chat box". This is a place where you can play out scenes with your characters for fun.1. The staff understands that you're writing for characters and those characters may be imperfect and display more colorful words than you yourself. However, we ask that you attempt your best to keep the rating at PG-13.
2. All rated R scenes (smexy scenes) are to be faded to black due to the rating of proboards. You can do those out of the site if you so desire, just not here in detail. Character Creation1. Face Claims are to be of the manga/anime art style. Other characters such as video game characters may be accepted with fan art of the character. FC's are allowed to be held for a limited 7 day period if you are in the process of creating your character. If the character is not completed at the end of the week long period, the hold will be deleted. Usually fc claims are made after the completion of the character/after it has been approved.2. There are no age limitations to characters on this site as long as they are within the realm of possibility according to their race profile. If you want to create so-so's abuelita, go for it. However, allow me to make one thing very crystal clear. If you create a child character (either in age or appearance for those that need that spelled out) there will be absolutely ZERO sexual activity that character will be participating in. For the sake of keeping the rule simple and sweet, we ask that the age of consent for characters be 18. Pedophilia and sexual abuse is a topic that is extremely close to me for very severe reasons I'm sure have become apparent. It will not be tolerated and banning will most likely be the result if this occurs. A similar rule of thumb is used if creating an android that is not humanoid. No bestiality please. We don't think this is too much to ask for. <3
The only limitations we hold for characters is based on the member's age. If the member is a minor/under aged they are not allowed to create a character that is promiscuous. If you are seventeen or younger you may not create a character whose job is sex based or engage in any sexually charged activity on the site. This is not us being lame. If you want to write out sexual frustrations there are plenty of jcink sites that are solely based on sexual activity. This is out of respect and being responsible for the adult members who are in their 20's and 30's. I don't want our rp home to be quoted in some case claiming one of our members solicited certain mature subjects with a minor. 3. If a skill is not listed in your character's profile then they don't have it. Period. This is to assist with lowering the possibility of Power Playing and Metagaming. All profiles are locked once accepted and will be adjusted by staff when purchased. For example, if your application doesn't state your character is computer savvy they can't suddenly be the world's expert hacker just because, for the thread, it sounds "cool".4. One character is allowed for each new member (obviously). In order to make a second your first character must have a total of 25 posts. We appreciate your enthusiasm and inspiration that came from our website's plot. Sincerely, it's humbling. But a common sin the admin staff has seen on past sites is that a fire will burn brightly to create multiple characters and die before a single character has 10 posts. We want to assist you in nursing a flame, not have it grow too large to where it can't keep up and die out.5. One member is allowed to have up to four characters before they can unlock their fifth and sixth. To do so, the member has two options; to make 150 in character posts collectively throughout all of their accounts, or purchase the character slot from the market. After this, you must kill or fade off one of these characters to make any more.
POSTING RULES
1. Language is to be kept at PG-13. Swearing, if done in excess, isn't tolerated.

No God-Modding (writing actions for someone else's character without their permission), Power Playing (writing your character to be more "powerful" or talented than they would be realistically within this universe), or Metagaming (example: in the sense of fighting threads your hits can't always hit). The staff's advice is to practice the open ended writing style which is described below. When in doubt, ask.
- Open Ended Writing Style! It's a manner of writing that allows the other writer to decide if an action succeeds on their own character or not. So for instance, instead of writing "Kari kicked Jason" you would write "Kari attempted to kick Jason". This writing style is honestly very easy once you learn the right words to use. Here's a list of terms and phrases to assist: tried to, would attempt, if the following action was left uninterrupted, if so-n-so is successful.
3. Minimum word count is 200.
4. The time frame for this site is liquid time. This means that a member can write multiple threads at once regardless of what time frame the scene takes place in.
5. All rated R scenes (smexy scenes) are to be faded to black due to the rating of proboards. You can do those out of the site if you so desire, just not here in detail.
6. NPC Rules. NPC's (Non-Playable Characters) are not to be used as a secondary character. They are not meant to play a big part, fight for you, guard you, etc. An NPC is not meant to provide major support or save your butt. That's why we have Accepted Characters and Wanted Ads.
Example: Coworker friend Molly. Molly can appear in your work threads for minor dialogue to assist in reaching that 200 word minimum. However, Molly cannot be an expert hacker. She isn't a sharpshooter nor the world's fastest spell caster. She is an average person who plays minor roles in any posts she appears in.
7. Rules pertaining threading. To prevent an overflow of open threads, in which noone has posted, each character you have is only allowed to create three open threads. A new open thread may be started once one of your other open threads has concluded. (C) ELLIE @ GANGNAM STYLE |

Religion and Science at Odds
GENERAL
Q. What are the maximum sizes for signatures?
A. 500 pixels wide by 150 pixels high.
Q. What is the size for avatars?
A. Images are automatically resized. Square graphics are required. No rectangle images stretching the code please or we will ask you to edit.
Q. What is the size for the profile picture?
A. 250 pixels wide by 350 pixels high.
UNIVERSEQ. The plot is set as "futuristic". How futuristic?A. Skimming the cyborg race gives you a pretty good idea by itself. Androids, human brains living inside a robotic body, etc. Overall however, to avoid the "star wars laser blasters" and "hyper drive space travel" we are choosing to place the world's technology maybe 200 to 500 years ahead of current day for us. Why? Because the Runic University wanted to halt mankind's technological advancement to remain in power. If technology improved to the extent where it was greater than Rune magic, then they would loose favor. So they began a campaign to focus on social uses rather than military so they can keep their power. Examples:
Cell Phones ... Display 3D holograms, faster, as strong as desktops
Medicine ....... Cybernetic replacements, nanomachines
Cars ............ Mostly electric, gas cars are more along the lines of collectibles
Computers .... Touch screens, 3D holograms, cords are uncommon
Misc ............ Hover tech isn't perfected yet, google glass-esque glasses, smart watch
Q. How far apart are Dagos and Felici?
A. A ways apart. I'd say approximately a fifteen hour trip by train. Felici, the capital city, is on the Western ocean shoreline where as Dagos is on the Eastern edge of the country. Yes, there are small towns in between.
Q. How do the two main cities differentiate and are Magi welcomed there?
A. Felici is supposed to be the fancy capital. It's the gorgeous European-esque city where culturally rich architecture is treasured. Where as Dagos is more of the Vegas style. Every building is modernly built, sleek, trying to grab tourist eyes with flashing lights. Between the two, Dagos is more welcoming of Magi. Felici's human population tends to be more elitist. Though hiding your Magi physical traits never hurts regardless of where you travel.
Q. Are there any foreign countries my character can originate from?
A. Yes. There are many countries and cities to choose from you can find them here in the World Atlas.
Q. What is the relationship between the Government and the Hunter Guild?
A. The night Magi across the country began mass escaping the Relocation Camps the military was overwhelmed. The Hunter Guild voluntarily assisted in that time of chaos, you know, by mass killing the escaped Magi. Through the duration of the genocide their relationship was positive, partners in attempting to conquer an overwhelming problem. However, after the genocide tension grew. There were rumors of Hunters continuing in the mass killing and kidnapping of Magi. For those sincere in their duties there is hostility due to the lack of proof to condemn the guild. For those that are racist, they will purposefully turn a blind eye to certain activities.
Q. What is the relationship between the Government and the Runic University?
A. Tense. The University is very influential and have many representatives in their financial pockets. It's seen as an organization with many secrets and possible dark closets.
Q. What is the relationship between the Runic University and the Hunter Guild?
A. Tense. I know, shocking. Runic users and Hunters are known to work together as well as allow students of the other group to join their establishments. However, there's a definite sense of "don't allow the other group know everything we do". A continuous striving to be one step ahead of the other.
Q. What type of magic can my character have?
A. Essentially there are three types of magic that a character can have. Runic Magic which is obtained solely by humans and through the Runic University. Natural Magic that the Magi race are born with, and is only accessible to them. Finally, there is Diety Magic, which requires your character to be blessed by a Diety. For example, Hunters are blessed by Kalidas the God of the Hunt.
Q. What is the age of consent (when can my character have sex)?
A. Eighteen.
Q. What is the legal drinking age?
A. Eighteen. We kept it simple for ya guys.
RACES
Q. Can one character be both a magi and a cyborg?
A. No. We're avoiding OP issues (Over Powered issues). IC (In Character) reasoning we've come up with is that, ehh, the Magi's genetic structure reject the technology. Weak reasoning? Yes, we know. But roll with us on this please.
Q. Can a Magi and Human be related?
A. Yes. If one parent is Magi and the other is Human/Cyborg there is a 50/50 chance of their children being Magi or Human. It is also possible for mixed marriages as well. However, keep in mind that it's more or less the equivalent of an interracial couple back in the 1940-1950's. It was not looked upon highly and often socially unaccepted.
Q. Can I be a Hunter and Rune Student or past student to hunter or vice versa?
A. The answer to that is, yes. You can be both but it has to be written into your history and make sense. Pro tip, loyalty will be demanded of your character to one establishment over the other. You will either pledge yourself to the Huntress while learning a new craft or you will pledge yourself to the University's Headmaster who serves Kalidas "on the side". Yeah, good luck with that.
Q. Can I Apply as a No-Maj?
A. Yes. No-maj is a rare birth defect that has been more common due to the abuse of downers. No-Maj are Magi born without magic and without abnormalities. However in your application you must state what Magi race you will become (fire, water, air etc.), as well as your future abnormalities that you will gain once that magic is regained (Horns, gills, wings etc.). You cannot start with any magi abilities but you can start with Human abilities.
Q. Can a Hunter Sense a No-Maj as a Magi?
A. No. Until a No-Maj's Magic comes in they look and smell human.
Q. How does a No-maj gain their magic?
A. A No-maj's magic comes in only when the Magi desperately needs it. In a thread you must be facing certain death for you or a loved one. at that moment you gain your abilities in one explosive (and painful) package. Abnormalities force their way fully formed. So the sudden sprouting of giant horns is quite common. Luckily for your character adrenaline should be running so high you wont feel as much at start, allowing you a short burst of power to protect yourself or a loved one. However afterwords you will likely pass out from pain, blood loss, or be tossing everything that was in your stomach on the ground. Before this can happen though you must purchase your starting abilities and the magi traits from the shop.
Q. Can a No-maj still look human after their magic comes in?
A. No. You can say that the abnormalities a magi possesses is caused by the magic itself. Once the magic comes in, you get the traits. no exceptions.
Q: Can my ghost change their appearance?
A: Ghosts can appear as anything humanoid, and do not have to retain the appearance they had in life. However, since their appearance is based on their perception and will, if they wish to mimic living beings (such as having growing hair and nails), they may.
Q: When a Ghost feeds off an emotion, Does the human no longer feel it?
A: Ghosts feed off the "smoke" of peoples emotions, not the "fire" itself. Thus they have no effect on the person they feed off of. In addition, emotions have a specific and distinct taste depending on the emotion and its source.
Q: Can I possess an Android?
A: At Possession I you can possess an empty android body. Meaning that there is no AI present. However, if there is an AI in the Body you must have Possession III to take control.
Q: What are the limits for Possession?
A: Generally keep it around humanoid size. So no. you cannot possess a Tank.
RACIAL RELATIONS
Q. So hunting Magi is legal for Hunters?
A. No. Not under the letter of the law, at least. However, it is almost never persecuted, due to racism and perception of Magi by the public and government. All one would have to do is say "this Magi was obviously a terrorist" and nobody would think twice about it.
Q. Can a Magi be a Hunter?
A. No. If you want your Magi to hunt down other Magi, that's fine, but they cannot do so as an official Hunter of the guild. The guild would still consider that Magi to be an enemy, too.
Q. Can Magi attend public schools?
A. Yes, though Magi schools are segregated from Human schools. Cyborgs would attend Human schools.
Q. Were humans allowed to live in the relocation camps?
A. No. Some camps allowed for short visitations.
Q. Can a human be in a relationship with a Magi?
A. Yes, although it's comparable to interracial marriages 30-40 years ago; the human would likely face discrimination and violence. it is NOT an accepted practice.

RUNIC MAGIC
Q. Can a cyborg or magi practice Runic Magic?
A. No. Keeping in mind that Runes can only be written in a special kind of ink the University regulates said ink with an intense vigor. No one outside of the University knows what gives the ink magical qualities so at this time in the site's plot, it's impossible to replicate it. And then the final nail in the coffin, the University has a very intense application process which has proven to be ehhhhh, a bit racist? To date they have only accepted humans. So no, not at this time can a magi or cyborg practice Runic magic.
Q. Can my character practice Runic Magic without being a student or professor of the University?
A. Following the same logic as the previous answer the character needs to have some sort of tie to the University to practice Runic Magic (because they're the only suppliers of the ink). I would say being a graduate of the University or a retired professor would be two acceptable options.
Q. Can I use runes that aren't listed?
A. No. In order to lessen the likely hood of power playing we're asking that you keep to the list here. At the same time we are aware that Mandarin Chinese is a language of literally over 86,000 characters. So if you come up with an idea for a spell please feel free to place it in the site's Suggestion Box.
Q. What secrets does the University have?
A. You're right. It's obvious that such a powerful establishment would have darker secrets. The answer is many. Magi are used secretly as lab rats. All Runic Professors are tattooed with a Rune that demands their loyalty and obedience to the Head Master. And that doesn't even get into what the Ink is made of ... That and more will be revealed as site plots continue~
Q: What are the limitations for The Last defense?
A: Due to the nature of the defense mechanism, the seal will not allow you to loose more blood than your body is able to survive without. At a base level, you can produce up to 5 tendrils. However if you've already been injured and lost a lot of blood, you may not be able to produce all five.
GODS
Q. Woah, wait. Gods?
A. Yes, Gods. Regardless of your character's beliefs in all the gods, only one of the gods, some goofy made up cult, or atheism this universe has a polytheistic reality. Link
Q. Can I create a God character and RP (Role Play) them?
A. At this time? No. As the site continues we may open up a God character concept for a staff member to adopt but that's probably about it. If you as the member are seasoned and have been found to be responsible in your writing practices we may approach you. But at this time any new God characters (of the which there are two planned for plot purposes in the future) would probably be entrusted to staff, whether that be an admin or a mod.
Q. How can I get a God to enter my thread?
A. To request a god simply leave a request in the Help Desk. Messaging the staff member playing the god of your choice after leaving a request is allowed or giving a friendly reminder in the cbox to the staff member is also. We'll get back to you as soon as we can! Pro Tip: A God visit is more likely to be approved if you can quote multiple past threads where your character has worshiped the God wither that be in a silent prayer or leaving a gift at a statue. If the visit is to spur major plot devices be sure to mention them in the request.
Q. Can I get a visit from a God if I am atheist or something else?
A. Probably not, no. You probably won't get a visit from something you don't believe in or worship. Gods are drawn in by prayer, sacrifices/gifts, and summons.
HACKING
Q. What abilities cannot be targeted by hacking?
A. Antivirus or related abilities, hacking abilities, alloy upgrades and plating upgrades are not able to be hacked.
Q. So when do I choose which upgrades to affect/protect?
A. The hacker chooses, IC, which parts they are trying to disable. Then the target chooses which systems out of those are protected by the antivirus.
Q. Do I have to select all the upgrades I wish to target right away?
A. No! You can choose to target one at a time, and likewise the defender can choose which hacks their antivirus responds to. In fact, we encourage you to space it out, for the sake of interesting RP!
Q. So when figuring out numbers, what order do we apply things? For example, brute force hacking doubles the time for disabled upgrades, but Antivirus II reduces it to 1/3; which is applied first?
A. Always apply hacking abilities first. So for example, brute force hacking would double the time an upgrade remains disabled, and then Antivirus II reduces that total product to 1/3.
Q. Can I take total control of a cyborg? What about disabling critical systems, like mechanical organs?
A. Under the abilities as written, no, but if your partner agrees to it, feel free to play that out.
Q. What about Bionics and hacking?
A. Pretty much the same, although you obviously can’t hack any non-cybernetic parts.
Q. Haha! Time to bring the government down with my hacking skills!
A. Haha! No. Read the Lore section! Government systems are immune to hacking attempts.
Q. But... I wanted to be an unstoppable hacker!
A. Nobody else is allowed to be unstoppable at anything; just Very Good.
Q. Wait so all the police and government cyborgs are immune to hacking??
A. No! Not at all! The government lore applies only to things like databases, security, and so forth, within the government. Agents, officers, politicians… they do not get this technology. Neither does the hunter’s guild, police, or most of the lower military; it is presumably expensive to produce, difficult to implement, and a secret they are not letting out anytime soon.
If your backstory involves you having access to this, expect it to be denied, unless discussed heavily with staff beforehand.
Q. Can the On-the-Fly hacking system be used for computers? How do we handle that?
A. Theoretically, yes, but… it’s really only designed for temporary access, and usually focused on cyborg systems/architecture, so you’d be best off slow-balling it. For computers, well, it’s back to how things are normally done; roleplay reasonably and discuss it with partners beforehand. Security is very good in 2593, so it might take some social engineering or physical contact to get what you need. This also makes for more interesting and fair RP.
Q. Will you have a system for hacking computers and stuff?
A. Probably not. That’s something that can be roleplayed out, as above. Just be reasonable, like everything else.
Q. Can weapons be hacked?
A. Swords and guns don’t have anything to hack. Built-in weapons for cyborgs can be disabled, though.
Q. Does my cyborg have to be vulnerable to hacking?
A. Unfortunately, it is a weakness of the cyborg race, so yes.
Q. Doesn’t being an AI give me a great chance to hack?
A. You get special abilities that others cannot get, but otherwise, no, not by default.

UPPERS And Downers
Leveling the playing field
Q. What are Downers?
A. A Downer is a chemical drug that was created to hinder a being from using magic. Magi is the only race affected by these. Not only does it make magic impossible to use efficiently (through the duration the Downer is in effect) but it can cause the Magi to experience drunk or high side effects as well depending on how much they've been injected with.
Q. What are Uppers?
A. A chemical drug that has the opposite effect as Downers do. Instead of weakening, it overcharges. Instead of drunk, you get over energized and focused. Just be aware, Magi, once the drug wears off the crash comes hard.
Q. How many downers does it take to take down a Magi?
A. It varies, some Magi are more resistant then others. However, if you get hit with three-four downers at once you are going down.
Q. Can you overdose on Uppers or Downers?
A. Yes, any kind of overdose of an excessive amount of the drug can lead to accelerated heart rate, permanent damage to nerves or limbs, upset stomach, coma's or even death. So drug up ... safely?
Q. Legality of such drugs?
A. Really, it depends on where you're at. Downers are illegal in the Magi safe haven city within Arecia Woods. But everywhere else in the country it's considered a right for Hunters and Law Enforcement to carry. Uppers are considered illegal within the country. And though not illegal in Haven, it is seen as a device that should only be used in dire trouble.
