“A healer, huh?” Daniel repeated. “I guess that would make you part of the Zero Magi, or somethin’ like that. That’s… useful enough. And since you’re a good runner, I won’t have to carry your ass if we have to book it out of here.” Great, a coward through and through. Still, even cowards had their uses and this one could heal people. He was about to say more when he became acutely aware of how quiet it was. Wasn’t there a screaming woman a moment ago? He next noticed that his magi “friend” was staring at something with big, terrified eyes. Following his gaze granted him sight of something that was just… wrong in some many ways it was ridiculous. The screaming banshee was standing upright now, all cuts and blood and nightmarish. She even had bloody eye sockets to complete the horrific ensemble. She was saying something that barely registered with him and the magi was denying it religiously. Something about being coward and abandoning her? It didn’t matter; all he was focused on was the too-big scalpel clutched in the aberration’s hands. Daniel interposed himself between the two with his fellow dreamer to his back and pulled a revolver. “I think you should back the fuck off, sister.” Luca Burke | Nevyne

Welcome to your
The lumbering abomination of Luca’s mother lurched forward, as if Daniel wasn’t even there. She gave no indication of hearing his words, nor did she seem to notice his body, or gun. She looked right through him towards Luca, her gaze never swaying. Now she moved in silence, but Luca could still hear her voice clawing at the back of his ear, like claws into his skin, leaving a cacophonic echo of whispers inside his head. “Lies… Excuses… Nothing you could do? And now? When a hunter raises his gun to my head, even now you sit. Tremble. Cry. Already you justify why it’s okay to let me be killed again.” The mutilated form of Luca’s mother would not stop for words, threats, or pleading. She would hold her arm forward, wildly waving the scalpel in front of her, despite still being several feet from Daniel. “You’ll let him shoot me instead of trying to help me, won’t you, Luca?” “Coward.” “We never should have died for you.” Whether Luca acted was up to him. Daniel, on the other hand, would be forced to act, as the woman would not stop walking forward with her blade, unless physically stopped, either with force or a gunshot. If Luca stepped between Daniel and her, she would still not stop, steadily closing in on Luca as she had been this whole time. “ Come on,” came a lower version of Daniel’s voice, heard only in his own mind. ”Cap ‘em both and be done with it. Magi’s useless anyway. Dead weight; he’ll never make it in this world anyway. Would be a service to put one in him, nice and quick. Better’n letting some hunter take him for parts.”

Luca could practically feel the thinly veiled disdain in Daniel’s voice, oozing out from the cracks he was trying to cover up. His lips pressed into a thin line, but he said nothing on the matter, and simply nodded along. He didn’t particularly want to get into that argument right now, and besides that, there were far more important things to tend to at the moment. Like not getting killed. Not getting killed would be lovely. Not having this doppleganger’s voice in his head would be even more so. Even with the ex-Hunter between the two of them, apparently willing to act as protector despite his distaste for him, Luca did not feel any more at ease. Having the angry ghost of one’s mother screaming in his head would do that. His hands rose to clutch at either side of his head, as though the action would push this thing out of his mind. Earlier denials repeated themselves. You’re not her! You’re not her, and there was nothing I could have done! You…” Something snapped, and his fear gave way to bitter anger. No, this was not his mother. This was a monster who didn’t have the right to pretend to be her. Swallowing hard, Luca dropped his still-shaking hands back to his sides, and looked to Daniel. It didn’t look like the abomination was going to stop any time soon, so… That left putting her down, didn’t it? As much as the very thought sickened him, there didn’t seem like any other option. “… Go on. Shoot her,” he mumbled, dropping his eyes. Daniel Caim Nevyne

Shut up, gods damn it, Daniel thought back to his double. Ain’t no point in puttin’ a round in him right now. He’s not worth the bullet. But in the back of his mind, Daniel was forced to agree. Someone as weak as the magi sniveling behind him would never survive when pushed. His grip tightened on the handle of his pistol to the point his entire hand was shaking. Not from fear, you see, but from the sheer effort it took him not to pull the trigger. The abomination was closing on him with the obvious intention of skewering him with that scalpel of hers. Why was he hesitating so much? She was obviously a threat that needed dealing with; however, doing so would mean giving in to his baser instincts, his other half. Doing so would be the same as admitting he was still the same murderer he was in the guild. He was almost ready to lower his gun and let himself be impaled when the magi behind him spoke up. …Go on. Shoot her. They were spoken with a reluctance that dripped from every syllable. Daniel’s head rose slightly. “I’m sorry.” And he truly was. He was sorry that he’d not gained his senses sooner and shot the bitch. After all… …it’s just another notch on the belt. The shaking in his hand subsided and his aim was steady once again. Time slowed as everything came into sharp focus. His finger flexed against the resistance in on the trigger; the hammer slowly came back in sympathy with the trigger. A round flew free of the muzzle and was followed soon after by a second, then a third. The first two were aimed at the woman’s chest while the final round flew for her head. A sad smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes overtook his scarred features and brought with it an epiphany of sorts. He was hunter; always had been, always would be. His fangs might have been dulled with age, but they still thirsted for blood. He longed for the thrill of the hunt. Not the paltry challenge presented by enslaving children and magi with barely any skill to their name, but prey worthy of his skill. If he survived, he would see about hunting again. Welcome to your
The two shots to the chest stopped her dead in her tracks, and with the final shot, she fell dead. Silent. Still. No last words, no screams or cries. Would that bring comfort, or make their skin crawl? Blood continued to pool from her body, with no sign of ending; it wouldn’t pose a danger to the men, but it was making quite the mess.
Nevyne, watching from her invisible throne, would smile, her hand lazily reaching up to pet her other half. The story was coming together, but it wasn’t ready to end yet. “Pacing, Oppy. A story needs good pacing. Events are in motion; I know what’s important to these dears, and this wasn’t it. Ahuhuhu~”
True to pacing, the two men would have a bit of time to catch their breath, and perhaps talk about what had just happened. With no current direction in the dream, they would be forced to share each other’s company. But it wasn’t long before the loudspeaker over the clinic beeped, signaling an announcement.
“Paging Dr. Burke and Nurse Caim,” said a female voice, her words like cursive and tone like velvet. Neither man would recognize it. “Dr. Burke and Nurse Caim. You have a house call; if you would kindly proceed out the new exit created by Nurse Caim and find the patient, the clinic would be grateful. Oh, and special note; Dr. Burke, it appears the patient is your father, and Nurse Caim, it would seem that someone who looked like you was seen looking for him.”
The announcement would pause. “I recommend you find them. That is, if you’d like to stop being slaves to your inner turmoil, and maybe find some sort of peace. Oh, and return to your own reality, of course. But you’re in charge here, doctor! Hmhmhmmm~”
The overhead would beep again, signaling that the announcement was over. The men could decide for themselves what to do, of course. If they did decide to leave through the hole, they would find themselves not in a forest, but in an extremely mountainous area; the sun was setting and rock dust hung in the air, drying it tremendously and irritating the eyes. There were several paths to take, leading them down a small slope and into what could well be a rocky maze, with high walls of natural stone formations. There was no indication visually for the correct path, but Daniel could detect a very familiar scent down one path, the most familiar scent of all; himself.

Unable to watch, Luca turned away and shut his eyes, silently hating himself for playing the catalyst in all this. Each crack of gunfire made him flinch, as did the dull “thud” of a body hitting the floor. Suddenly, his earlier protests against the reality of this place seemed even weaker. It’s just… it’s just a dream… A shaky breath exited his lungs while he worked to keep himself from falling to his knees and sobbing. Ultimately, the effort wasn’t entirely successful, as a few hot tears trickled down his cheeks in the process. However, these were quickly wiped away on a sleeve. It was only after an unfamiliar voice spoke over the intercom that the young magi was able to open his eyes again, and even then, he couldn’t bring himself to look at the body of his mother’s doppleganger on the floor. Instead, his gaze shifted toward the hole in the far wall. His “father” and the ex-Hunter’s clone were somewhere out there, it seemed, and for a while Luca debated whether it was even a good idea to try finding them, until the velvety voice spoke again. Find them to return to the waking world, was it? Did that mean they were hearing…? Well, never mind that now. A new choice had to be made, not that there was much of one available. Letting out a quiet, tired sigh, Luca stepped forward, skirting carefully around the ever-spreading pool of blood to poke his head through the hole. Beyond stretched a vast maze of stone, far too winding and tangled to make sense of, even from above. Which way now…? Frowning, Luca turned to fix Daniel with a questioning look, to see if he might have any sort of insight on the matter. Daniel Caim Nevyne

Daniel stared vacantly at the corpse for a moment that stretched onward into eternity. There was something both liberating and unwholesomely vexing about the sight. On the one hand, he felt as though he was finally coming to grips with himself; on the other, it felt like a betrayal to everything he thought he stood for. He was supposed to have left all of this behind and here he was taking satisfaction in a job well done. The voice chiming over the intercom (which he’d not even noticed existed up until that moment) brought him out of the trace he found himself in. Nurse Caim? The hell was that supposed to mean? Then, the voice made it clear what it wanted and what the reward would be for listening. He sniffed at the clearing air and did his best to filter out the stench of blood pooling around his feet. His own scent (or rather that of his twin) wafted in on the breeze. A feral snarl fit for a wolf escaped from between clenched teeth as he turned to the opening. “I’ve got the scent,” he said as he passed by Luca. “Let’s hurry up and find that bastard so I can cap’m and we can get out of Dodge.” He followed the trail to the left just like whatever script he was following wanted him to. Being at the mercy of someone or something was irksome. The sooner this nightmare was over, the better.\ Luca Burke | Nevyne

Ah. Daniel had the scent. Of course he did. He was a former Hunter, wasn’t he? They were good at picking up those sorts of things. Luca followed along in numb silence down, down into the canyon. Like the other places that had appeared to occupy the dreamscape, this one was odd. Off. Impossibly intricate, despite being nothing but a mishmash of stone and dead shrubbery. Dry, but not hot. Evenly lit, but without a sun or any other visible source that provided such lighting. Birds watched from overhead, mercifully silent for the moment. Bones littered the floor, which he was careful not to step on. He’d had more than enough morbidity in this nightmare without adding remains crunching underfoot to the list. Save for the quiet clapping of their footsteps on the rocky floor, silence reigned, taut and uncomfortable. Normally, such a thing wouldn’t have bothered Luca. The two of them were practically strangers, with little love lost on one another. They had nothing to say of any worth to each other. It should have been better to keep their mouths shut while they walked, winding this way and that, and occasionally doubling back after reaching a dead end. But here, now, the quiet was haunting. It provided for far too much room to think, and it was nearly impossible to keep his thoughts from what they had already experienced here. Gunshots rang and rattled in his brain, alone and in groups. The flat thumps of collapsing bodies shook him to his core. Crack! One for his father, in the back. Thud. Bang bang bang! Three for his mother, in the front. Thump. He can see their bodies in his mind’s eye. Bloody and broken and still. But they aren’t their bodies. Their bodies— their true bodies— were lost to him years ago. Maybe his mother at least got a chance at a burial in an unmarked grave. His father, undoubtedly, was taken apart for his bones. Had there even been anything left, after the Hunters were done…? Stop. They reached another dead end. For a moment, Luca stared straight ahead, at the jagged wall of stone blocking their way, trying and failing to contain these dark, nagging thoughts of his. The effort proved almost as exhausting as it was fruitless, so he decided to try a different tactic, and turned to Daniel. “… Are you alright?” Maybe, he thought, he could shake his troubled musings by diving into someone else’s, playing the gentle caretaker as always. He couldn’t be the only one in a bad state now, could he? Daniel Caim Nevyne

Barely seven steps into the maze and Daniel was already hating everything about it. The air was dusty and arid but somehow still relatively temperate. Large crows with searching eyes perched atop the featureless stone walls and stared down at the pair mockingly as the pair walked a winding path through the labyrinth. Above all, it was silent. Deafeningly silent. Maddeningly silent. Deathly silent. Daniel desperately wished for sound in some shape or fashion. The cawing of a crows, small talk from the magi, a gods damned gunshot! Anything to break the monotony of his boots softly thudding against the ground.
He regretted his wish almost immediately with a familiar crack accompanied his footfalls. A glance downward and a shifting of his booted feet told him everything he already knew. Bones of description as varied as they were numerous were strewn all across the floor beneath him. The one underneath his foot currently was a long thigh bone probably taken from a man in his late thirties. Funny. That was one of the bones he took from old Alaric. Which probably meant that all of these bone belonged to…
Daniel tried not to think about that last part as his looked up and soldiered on, doing his best to ignore the crunching from below him and focus on tracking the scent. They were close now. The anticipation was making his hair stand on end. He wanted this to be over and done with and if that required him to walk across a field of bones for a showdown with himself that was fine. All that mattered with the trail, the hunt. But the hunt would be a bit more difficult if he kept finding dead ends. Though he’d been sure of himself beforehand, he wrote it off as a fluke, a strange lapse in concentration that led him astray. The second time irritated him slightly, but he pressed on. The third mistake drove him to anger and the fourth and final saw it explode as he smashing his fist into the wall.
“Damn it all!” Daniel struck the wall again, then a third time with his opposite fist. He’d been so sure of himself and where he was going. Was he finally starting to lose his edge? That thought alone terrified him more than anything. The magi’s question barely registered through that terror, but made him turn his head all the same.
“Those bones that we keep walking on—” He paused, unsure of how to continue. “I… I think that they might have been all the people I’ve killed. I racked up a nice little tally back in the day. Stopped keepin’ track at some point, but I know there were lots. Higher than I wanna count.” Tears, hot and salty, trailed down his cheeks.
“Should’ve stopped while I was ahead, but I needed the cash.” It sounded like an excuse, even to himself.

Daniel’s sudden outburst was startling, to say the least, and very nearly made Luca flinch away. One fist struck the wall before them, then the other, while he listened quietly for the tell-tale crunch of injured bone and worked to recover from the shock to his nerves. A shaky breath drew in, was held, and hissed back out through his mouth. A couple quiet coughs followed, as dust tried to settle in his lungs. From this, too, the young magi tried to recover quickly. He listened in grim silence to the man’s answer, dropping his eyes to the ground so the ex-Hunter wouldn’t see the darkness building in them. How long exactly had they been walking, he wondered. How many corpses had he tiptoed around to get here? Conjurations of a horrid dream, and yet, apparently, very real projections of past sins. Transgressions made for money. For profit. Silent as the canyon they stood in, Luca turned away to hide a curdling expression, pretending to look back out over the path they’d followed to get here. For a while, war raged in his thoughts and feelings. Dark words, acrid and bitter on his tongue, begged to be spoken. Begged to be spat in the face of the sobbing man behind him. Didn’t he deserve it after all he’d done? All the lives he’d destroyed? He bit his lip. Chewed. Glanced back… And let out a soft, deflating sigh. What to say? What not to? “… What’s done is done,” he said after another moment or two, sounding slightly tired. It was true, wasn’t it? There was no changing the past. “What should or shouldn’t have been doesn’t change that.” Slowly, Luca turned around and edged a bit closer, still mindful of the bones at his feet. Briefly, his eyes met with the empty sockets of a skull, but he tore them away just as quickly. He remembered the little girl from Camlorn, dying until they’d both helped her. “But you’re trying to change now, right?” An incorrigible murderer could not have cared about her as much as Daniel had… right? He hoped so, anyway. “That’s what matters.” How nice it would be if he could bring himself to believe those words as much as he wanted to. Daniel Caim Nevyne

Daniel chuckled as the tears continued flowing in streams down his cheeks. He felt so pathetic that it was amusing. Here he was, weeping over his past sins with a magi that might very much want to slug him in the mouth for them standing nearby. In all honesty, he wouldn’t have blamed him in the least. Even if Luca said things to the contrary, the hunter knew well enough that he didn’t really buy what he was selling. In his eyes as well as those of many others, he was a murderer beyond redemption; it was an assessment that he might’ve agreed with. Then again, that might have just been his paranoid mistrust of others. Maybe the healer meant every bit of his comforting speech.
He took a deep breath, held it, then exhaled as he wiped his face clean. That little outburst was enough to fill his quota for feeling sorry for himself for a while. This was a time to be strong.
“Hope you’re right ‘bout that one, guy,” Daniel said as he stood to his full height. The world came back into its usual focus and he caught on to the scent again. The sense moment in which they would finish this was near at hand drove him onward.

Welcome to your
And Daniel would be correct; the growing scent led him forward, and the number of winding paths and false ends would dwindle until they were on a singular path. Before them, a set of what looked to be stairs, that lead to some sort of plateau; twenty steps made of bone stuck into the side of the rocky hill. Clouds above twisted into lazy spirals as if they wished to form a tornado, but lacked the strength.
The bones would crunch under their steps, holding firm as steps but cracking and giving ever so slightly under their weight. No doubt this was where Daniel’s other was located; the scent was almost overpowering.
And if they were to climb the stairs, they would see two figures atop a plateau. One on his back, propped up on one arm, struggling to stand, and the other holding a gun at the figure. Who were these figures? Well, it would depend on who you asked. Daniel would see his doppelganger as the one with the gun, and the magi from the start of the dream, Luca’s father, blooded and on the ground, but alive. Luca, however, would see it differently; it was Daniel’s figure on the ground, and his father with the gun, a familiar gun that must have belonged to the hunter.
They would even hear different things.
Daniel’s ears would pick up a laugh from his gun-wielding other. “It’s thrilling, ain’t it? ‘Course it is. Another notch for the belt, another exciting hunt. Ah, you can’t beat it, can you? You try, sure, but we both know nothing comes close. How much did you like hunting me down with just your nose, huh? Heh, you can’t hide it.”
But Luca would see and hear his father as the one with the gun. His voice was stern, yet remorseful, and just how Luca remembered it. “Lu… I heard what you’ve been told. I know it’s not your fault I died. You were a child; how could it be? No… it’s them.” He nodded at the cowering hunter on the ground. “We can’t survive with peace, Lu. We have to fight them. They want a hunt, not a war; Lu, you’re going to have to fight if you want to make it in this world.”

After a few more blunders into dead-end routes, Daniel finally felt as though he were back on track. The scent was growing more intense with each step they took. At length, the two of them came to a set of bone stairs embedded in the side of a hill. “Up there,” Daniel told Luca. “That’s where we’ll find that bastard.” He set off immediately afterwards, not liking the way the stairs creaked and groaned under him as he walked up them. He especially didn’t like those ominous storm clouds swirling overhead. It reminded him of those scenes from the old action flicks his old gang would watch sometimes. There always seemed to be a storm when a climax was at hand; it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand erect. His hand found his weapon just as he broke the top of the stair and pointed the deadly instrument at his foe. Something was off-putting about this whole situation. “You call that a hunt? I’ve had kids put play hide’n’seek better than you.” Truthfully, it was quite possibly the best hunt he’d ever had. It was right up there with the chase Alistair led him on; put up a hell of a fight too. “And here ya are, bullying a guy that can’t even fight back. You sure we’re the same guy?” Luca Burke | Nevyne

Back through the canyon they went, upholding silence beneath the strange tension Daniel’s last words had left behind. Inwardly, Luca hoped he was right, too. Their pace was quicker now, and for a while he wondered whether it was safe to assume they were on the right track at last. Eventually, as they reached a new area, he found his question answered— although he remained uncertain of whether this was a good thing. Bone steps were laid out before them, traveling upwards to the top of the plateau they lined. While Daniel climbed ahead, Luca paused at their base, eyeing their material wearily. He really, really didn’t want to climb them… but it appeared he had no other choice. So, bracing himself, he followed after the ex-Hunter, and tried to ignore the crunching under his feet. Five steps up… ten… fifteen… Each brining him ever closer to the boiling clouds above and the flat top of the plateau. He reached the top step, edged onto the plateau, looked up… And found his “father” alive and whole again, with a gun in his hand and Daniel’s doppleganger helpless on the ground before him. It was a strange sight to say the least, and for a moment all Luca could do was stare mutely while the phantom spoke to him, flinging what was once an affectionate nickname about as though he was desperate to give it away. Knots started tying themselves in his stomach. Wrong… this is wrong… Unable to respond aloud, he simply shook his head while an almost desperate look etched its way onto his features. Please… stop…But then Daniel spoke, and confused the situation even more. Frowning, Luca looked to him, followed his gaze to his “father”, and back. What was he… what was he even talking about? The same guy? He wasn’t even looking at his clone! “W-wait, um…” What to say? “Daniel… that’s not…” Not who? “… you…?”Daniel Caim Nevyne

Welcome to your
Daniel’s double laughed and turned to Daniel. “You can’t hide it from me; I’m as much a part of you as anything else. You can try as you might, but you’ll never put me out. Never kill me. As for this one,” he said, wiggling the gun to indicate his target. “He’s not helpless. He ran, I chased; he fought, I won. That’s how the hunt works, isn’t it? The strongest survive, and the animals get taken for parts.” He laughed. “’Course, why am I explaining this? You know it to be true. That’s the reason I exist. Even if you try to redeem yourself, I’ll be a whisper in your head, for the rest of your life.”
While Daniel heard this, Luca heard different words from his father.
“Lu, please,” he said, almost begging. A tear would roll down his eye. “I know you don’t approve. I know it’s not who you are. I died to save you, Lu; and I would do it again. I love you, Lu. And if I need to kill people like him,” he said, bobbing his gun to indicate the man on the ground. “To make sure you’re safe… I’ll do it.”
He turned to look at the real Daniel, and then gave Luca a pained look. “Will you let him kill me, Lu? When all I want is to keep you safe? You’ll… watch me die again?”
Daniel’s doppelganger would also turn to look at the pair, though his face was a smug grin. Daniel heard the words. “Tell ya what; let me off this magi, and I’ll be quiet in your head for a little while.”
Behind them, the staircase dissolved into a fine dust, along with the rest of the bones in the canyon they had traversed. Wind howled and dust kicked in small clouds along the ground, a mixture of brown from the rock dust and grey from the dust of bones. Clouds rolled and spun, rumbling low.
