[attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 303 [attr="class","gold"]pushes this towards u [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see Loch Périlleux, it really was a beautiful sight. Water the color of the purest springs— clear and cool and sparkling with the shine of gemstones in the afternoon sun —beckoning Fiamma forwards with the gentle winds that rolled across its surface and tugged at the ends of her hair. Beautiful and peaceful, a fixture she could always count on to be here and mirror what she held in her memories.
Well, she wasn't here just to sift through those memories so all the reminiscing would have to wait. She was here to catch some food.
Fiamma's preferred method for fishing (simply out of efficiency) was to toss out the net she held bundled under one arm out over different areas of the water and drag all the critters she could tangle up back to shore but, when nicer days like this left her feeling more patient, she would indulge in something less industrious. The fire magi's feet carried her directly toward an outcropping of stone that hung a few feet out over the water at its edge and settled down a large, flat rock with the certainty of someone who had done this many times before. She set her net down and began to set up baiting the pole that had been slung over her shoulder. Using it might only drag in one fish per cast but she'd always found the activity to be... oddly soothing.
She was just drawing her arm back to cast out over the lake when a sound caught her attention. Soft, not too obtrusive, but definitely movement and definitely not caused by herself. It could always just be a squirrel or some other forest animal skittering nearby but Fiamma was always the more cautious sort and her head turned to follow it, vivid blue eyes seeking the source. [attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever “How do you even do this?” Cadence whispered to a pair of hawks, who regarded her curiously from a safe distance. Her bare talons were dripping wet from her latest attempt as snagging a fish. Nearby, her bag rest, nuzzled in a towel she had the foresight to bring. She was thankful that the small “cove” she had found was somewhat private. Not that she expected to find many people near the lake, but it was nice to be able to retreat to a secluded area after failing what should be a simple task, where she could stomp her birdlike feet in frustration and throw a small fit that could only be described as “adorable,” complete with whining groans and sticking her tongue out at the lake. The lake was far from home, but she enjoyed it much more than the open ocean. Geno had taken the kids on a trip to visit his family, giving Cadence a few days, insisting she use it to relax and enjoy herself. Well, enjoying herself was easy up until she got to the lake. She had watched the birds dive against the lake and snatch a fish each time they rose. She had wings, she had talons; surely she could do the same thing? What she didn't have was finesse, or an understanding of water's refraction. Still, she backed up from the water, her feet kicking rocks aside, and took a low, runner's crouch. “Okay, this time for sure!” She said. She took off into a run, spread her winged arms, and took to the air, gliding just above the water, watching for the shining forms of fish getting some sun. It wasn't long before she saw one. She took a deep breath, swooped down, and... ...Didn't bring her legs forward in time. With her speed, this sent her flipping against the water like a skipped stone. “Ack! Oof!” she cried out as the water's spray covered her face and drenched her body. She managed to turn and gain enough control of her ruffled wings to glide to the nearest source of land, where she coughed and sputtered, drenched with water and defeat. “Ooh, darnit!” She screamed in her ineffectual, soft voice. She picked up a small rock and tossed it a pathetic distance into the lake before sitting down on the rocky shore. It was then she noticed the nearby figure, not twenty feet away, frozen mid-cast in a fishing pole. Her face flushed dark with embarrassment; oh goddess, she must have seen the whole thing! She hid her face in her hands after giving the woman a brief wave with one of them. “S-sorry,” she said into her hands, not considering that the person probably couldn't hear her. “I didn't mean to bother you.” [attr="class","text-lyrics"]Always on my lips you will dance so sweetly the leviathan @ GS & BRSW[newclass=.icon-bg]padding:10px;border:1px solid #000;height:100px;width:100px;margin-right:10px;[/newclass][newclass=.iconhere]-moz-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-webkit-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-o-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;[/newclass][newclass=.iconheres]-moz-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-webkit-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-o-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;opacity: 0;[/newclass][newclass=.iconheres:hover]-moz-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-webkit-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-o-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;opacity:1;[/newclass][newclass=.notestxt]padding-top:20px;font:small-caps 10px 'Times New Roman',serif;color:#fff;text-align:justify;padding:10px;overflow:auto;[/newclass][newclass=.text-lyrics]display:inline-block;font: italic 9px/100% Times New Roman,serif;text-align:center;letter-spacing:1px;width:80%;border-bottom:1px solid #000;line-height:0.1em;margin:10px 0 20px;margin-left:30px;[/newclass][newclass=.text-lyrics span]background:#fff;padding:0 10px;[/newclass] [newclass=.post]font:11px Times New Roman,serif;color:#1c1c1c;padding:0px 20px 0px 0px;height:350px;width:330px;text-align:justify;overflow:auto;line-height:130%;position:relative;margin-top:-400px;margin-left:100px;[/newclass][newclass=.post::-webkit-scrollbar-track]border:1px solid #000;background-color:#fff;[/newclass][newclass=.post::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color:#000;[/newclass][newclass=.post::-webkit-scrollbar]width:4px;background-color:#fff;[/newclass]

It was rather outside of what could be called 'the norm', actually. ...huh.
The fire magi's head tilted off on an angle as she watched the scene unfold (caught somewhere between intrigue and vague puzzlement) but the person she could now distinguish as a rather slim girl seemed to make it to dry land in one piece. The little display of frustration that followed was enough for Fiamma's bristling alarm to go slack all at once. Yeah, no— no threat detected. The new arrival was very obviously a magi and (though Fiamma always did like to exercise some healthy caution) her instincts weren't exactly screaming at her to remain on alert. More than anything she was just wondering what that whole mishap had been about.
❝It's fine.❞ She hadn't actually been able to make out the words the other girl had spoken, however she could wager a good guess as to what they'd been. The response was accompanied by Fiamma actually finishing her stalled cast, sending the line flying out smoothly over the water to land with a plunk, and she settled her grip on the fishing rod before glancing back towards her new conversation partner. A hand on the rod was really all that's needed to monitor it, so there was brain power left to spare. ❝Are you just learning to fly or—?❞ [newclass=.gold]background-color:#fff;padding:2px;border-left:#222e8e 10px solid;font-family:century gothic;font-size:10px;color:#121b5e;width:120px;margin-top:10px;opacity:0;transition: 1s all;text-align:left;[/newclass] [newclass=.dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .gold]opacity:1;transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar]background-color:#fff;width:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color:#666;width:1px;[/newclass] [googlefont=La Belle Aurore]

[attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever She removed her hands from her face, revealing her cringing expression as she groaned. “It looked THAT bad?” She said, her voice a disappointed whine. She stood up and shook herself off, spraying water from her birdlike body. Her white hair and feathers poofed out a bit, giving a soft, fuzzy appearance to the tiny bird. “No, no… I know how to fly.” To prove her point, she flapped her wings twice, and she lifted upwards into the air, completing a small spiral, a little flourish to try and prove there was some grace to her. She beat her wings a few more times to gain some altitude before she floated back down to the rocky shore, a little closer to her conversational partner, but still leaving a respectful distance between them. She had to learn from experience that not everyone warmed up to people like she did. “I’m learning to fish, actually,” she said. She pointed up at the hawks diving into the lake. “Like them. It’s… not as easy as it looks. I just can’t seem to get it right. Then again, I don’t spend a lot of time near water…” Her arms went limp at her side as she made a noise. “Buh.” She stuck her tongue out in defeat at the water, and flopped back down onto the rocks. She pulled her legs up and wrapped her wings around herself like a blanket that could protect her from embarrassment. She took a good look at the girl; a magi, clearly, cute, and probably young, too. Goddess, it seemed that there were more young magi than old. The killings really were vicious, weren’t they? How many parents had to die so their children would go on? She sighed, hoping that wasn’t the case for this person. She wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone. “My name’s Cadence, by the way,” she said, forcing a smile. She then realized that between the pole and the net, the woman was probably an expert fisherwoman. Her face flushed even deeper; perhaps it would have been best to pretend she was learning to fly. She probably thought she was an idiot, not that she would really be wrong about that. [attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 355 [attr="class","gold"]poor cadence honestly [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see ❝You did go crashing into the water, but I just assumed that was because you were still learning to fly. Seemed like the most likely reason.❞ She turned her head to side eye the other magi through a few stray strands of crimson that fell across her eyes, just in time to catch the little display of flight she was being presented with. Amusement flashed clearly across Fiamma's expression in a bright spark and she even breathed out a wisp of laughter. Yes the feathered girl was definitely capable of using those wings. So then why had—?
...ah. Now that made a bit more sense. ❝Fishing.❞ Fiamma echoed, tone neutral save for a faint ring of that same amusement, turning another few cranks on the reel of her pole. If the hawks were out and about trying to snatch things out of the water then that was a good sign (as far as actually catching something was concerned) but so far her slow drawing in of the line hadn't attracted even a nibble. It didn't really bother her, though. A beautiful day to sit and enjoy and now some conversation, also she could always toss the net out a few times if nothing decided to bite which, incidentally, happened pretty often. This sort of routine was really the one time Fiamma could be described as anything close to patient.
She usually wasn't the conversational type towards strangers, either, but this girl— Cadence —seemed nice enough... if a little air headed. Haha. It would be a lie to say that her friendly demeanor and embarrassment didn't put Fiamma more at ease with each passing moment and, frankly, magi would always get the best first response from her since there was less risk they'd try to kill her out of prejudice. That tidbit always helped friendships go along a lot smoother, not that the fire magi had much experience. That would be a side effect of living out in the forest all alone.
❝I'm Fiamma. Did you come to the lake specifically to try aerial fishing, or was that more of a spur of the moment thing?❞ [newclass=.gold]background-color:#fff;padding:2px;border-left:#222e8e 10px solid;font-family:century gothic;font-size:10px;color:#121b5e;width:120px;margin-top:10px;opacity:0;transition: 1s all;text-align:left;[/newclass] [newclass=.dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .gold]opacity:1;transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar]background-color:#fff;width:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color:#666;width:1px;[/newclass] [googlefont=La Belle Aurore]

[attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever “Fiamma,” Cadence repeated, as if tasting the sound on her tongue. Her face lit up as she clapped her hands together. “Wow, how pretty! Nice to meet you! And I, ah, no, I didn’t plan it. I just saw the birds doing it and thought ‘well how hard can it be?’” She stood and walked to the edge of the water, wading in deep enough for it to cover her feet. When she wasn’t skipping on it like a rock, the water felt refreshing, and she made a satisfied hum. “Turns out… it’s really hard!” She said. “But I almost had it that last time, I swear!” She waded in a little deeper. The gentle breeze made tiny waves that bumped again her shins. “This is my second time out to the lake. I don’t usually come out this far from Dagos. But I’m spending a few days in the outlands, to get away from the city; usually I stay in the plains, or go up to the woods to visit- Hah!” The sudden outburst was punctuated with a loud SPLASH! as Cadence lifted her talon and stomped it into the water. She looked down, waiting for the waves to settle. No doubt she got it this time! She was sure she felt the fish struggling under her talon, a victim of her expert reflexes. She put her hands on her hips and stood proudly, like she was posing for a painting. When the waters flattened out, she deflated; no fish was pinned between the rocks and her talons. A wiggling glimmer moved away from her, a lucky fish that barely escaped her. Defeated again. “Uuughhh, dangit! How does anyone catch fish like this?!” She stomped her foot into the water once more, splashing water up into her own face. Once her frustrated faded (which took no time at all, as the girl was horrible at being angry), she realized that she was being inconsiderate to Fiamma. With a few flaps of her wings, she lifted herself out of the water and landed a short distance from the other magi, off to her side. “Sorry, sorry! I’m probably scaring the fish away, aren’t I?” She said, taking a seat on the ground once more, making a point to avoid eye contact. “You probably catch more than you know what to do with,” she mumbled. [attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 476 [attr="class","gold"]aah I get that feeling no worries [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see Pretty? Now that was a new one, well— new to hear from anyone who wasn't her parents; something she hadn't heard in a few years now. ❝M'hmmm.❞ The temptation to make some snide, teasing comment on how the attempt hadn't looked very close to success from her point of view was potent, bringing the words to sit on the tip of Fiamma's tongue before ultimately getting no further. She just cracked another wordless smile rather than let anything slip free. There was something about Cadence's personality that made the fire magi feel that snarking her would feel like kicking a puppy.
Resisting the urge was a betrayal of her character in some ways, but Fiamma slipped back into one of her more common traits within the next few moments— silence. She was a quiet audience throughout Cadence's explanation (only nodding occasionally to make it obvious that she was still listening) and continued to intermittently draw the fishing line in closer and closer to the bank. Eventually the crank of the reel just picked up to a consistent clatter as she sought to fully pull it in, snatch the end of the line out of the air to inspect the bait (untouched), and draw the pole back for another cast. Off the hook went flying back over the water, winking in the sun, and hit the surface relatively far off into deeper water. Another soft 'plunk'ing sound.
The whole endeavor had caused Fiamma's attention to start to wander from the girl who was now wading in the shallows but the splash of Cadence's foot stomping into the water— not to mention her shout —was enough to remedy that in a snap. The fire magi sat up enough to be able to peek over at the other girl's feet but, alas, it seemed that it was another bust. You had to commend her determination. Hopefully she just never found herself in a life or death situation that depended on fishing skills. ❝I wouldn't know. It's probably just practice... or being an actual bird in the first place.❞
Not having wings herself, it wasn't like Fiamma had much of a perspective. There were times she had heard of fire magi using their magic to propel themselves along, even fly, but for Fiamma in particular she was still a bit far off from that. Maybe some day. That could be a nice dream to chase— the freedom of flying.
❝Haha, no not really. Maybe if I was using my net on the bank I would yell at you for it,❞ she patted the pile of woven rope by her side in indication. ❝but not with the pole. Truthfully I don't catch a whole lot this way if the fish just don't feel like biting. ...I live up in the Arecia Woods, so I have a few ways to get food.❞ [newclass=.gold]background-color:#fff;padding:2px;border-left:#222e8e 10px solid;font-family:century gothic;font-size:10px;color:#121b5e;width:120px;margin-top:10px;opacity:0;transition: 1s all;text-align:left;[/newclass] [newclass=.dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .gold]opacity:1;transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar]background-color:#fff;width:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color:#666;width:1px;[/newclass] [googlefont=La Belle Aurore]

[attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever She nodded at Fiamma’s wisdom. “True… they’ve been doing it their whole lives, probably. I guess I can’t expect to get it right away.” She extended her leg and wiggled her talon, retracting it and stretching it. “They have smaller feet, too. Maybe mine are too big for the fish. Or maybe I just need to find bigger fish!” She giggled at her own small joke. Her laughter faded into a content sigh as she looked out at the lake. It was quite beautiful; there was nothing like it in Dagos. The sun’s glimmer on the small waves, the breeze in her feathers, the serenity… she wondered why she didn’t make this trip more often. Even the water drying from her body in the sun’s warm embrace felt nice. She scooted forward to the water’s edge and let her feet soak. Even watching Fiamma cast out her line and hearing the cute plunk filled her with joy. “Oh, you live in Arecia?” She asked. “It must be lovely, being out in nature every day, coming here to the lake… I lived in the woods to, for a time.” She deflated a bit, a slight frown crossing her face. The camp was in the woods, and when they ran, they stuck to them, hoping to lose the hunters. “Well… in a way.” She lifted her feet up and down, making small splashes in the water as she hugged her wings to herself. She forced a smile, leaving out the details for now. Fiamma probably didn’t want to hear about it, and Cadence wasn’t keen on ruining a so far pleasant conversation. She was grateful that the girl was willing to talk to her, even after she made a fool of herself. Talking to new people was one of life’s overlooked joys. “I miss foraging up there, actually. You could find the best fruits and mushrooms in the early summer. Do you know where the peach grove is, near the waterfall?” The woods were huge, but there was a chance she knew. If she stuck in Arecia, maybe they were in the same camp. Well, would they have recognized each other? She tilted her head at the magi and examined her. Well, eight years was a long time. They both probably looked different back then. And besides, with the number of the camps, it seemed unlikely. “Oh, and the Flameberries! Goodness, I miss them, too. I’ll have to pick some up before I go back.” She leaned back, stretching her arms and groaning happily as she did. Her back and shoulders felt a little sore from her earlier trip across the water. “So, how do you like living there, in the woods? Do you stay with anyone?” [attr="class","text-lyrics"]Always on my lips you will dance so sweetly the leviathan @ GS & BRSW[newclass=.icon-bg]padding:10px;border:1px solid #000;height:100px;width:100px;margin-right:10px;[/newclass][newclass=.iconhere]-moz-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-webkit-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-o-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;[/newclass][newclass=.iconheres]-moz-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-webkit-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-o-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;opacity: 0;[/newclass][newclass=.iconheres:hover]-moz-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-webkit-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;-o-transition: all 0.9s ease-in-out;opacity:1;[/newclass][newclass=.notestxt]padding-top:20px;font:small-caps 10px 'Times New Roman',serif;color:#fff;text-align:justify;padding:10px;overflow:auto;[/newclass][newclass=.text-lyrics]display:inline-block;font: italic 9px/100% Times New Roman,serif;text-align:center;letter-spacing:1px;width:80%;border-bottom:1px solid #000;line-height:0.1em;margin:10px 0 20px;margin-left:30px;[/newclass][newclass=.text-lyrics span]background:#fff;padding:0 10px;[/newclass] [newclass=.post]font:11px Times New Roman,serif;color:#1c1c1c;padding:0px 20px 0px 0px;height:350px;width:330px;text-align:justify;overflow:auto;line-height:130%;position:relative;margin-top:-400px;margin-left:100px;[/newclass][newclass=.post::-webkit-scrollbar-track]border:1px solid #000;background-color:#fff;[/newclass][newclass=.post::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color:#000;[/newclass][newclass=.post::-webkit-scrollbar]width:4px;background-color:#fff;[/newclass]

[attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 411 [attr="class","gold"]mHM. cuties with troubled pasts. but still cuties [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see ❝Maybe. Bigger fish would definitely give you more to sink your claws into. And I know that catching something like minnows is a godawful task even if you're using your hands.❞ Slippery bastards, it was endlessly frustrating to know that they made the best bait but were so hard to catch. She'd had to find a fine mesh material just to be able to start netting them and save herself the headache of trying to grab them out of the shallows. Never again.
❝I do.❞ It wasn't difficult to catch the melancholy note to Cadence's tone and Fiamma could wager a good guess as to the cause. Every magi had their own personal history, of course— their own circumstances that had unfolded in wake of the mass outbreak, changing their lives for better or worse —but there were certain things that had left scars on all of their kind. Things that couldn't simply be forgotten.
Fiamma followed a similar line of thinking to the other girl, though, and chose not to poke at the gloomy little blip to her tone. Instead the fire magi just reached into her pocket to dig out the ragged piece of flint that rested there (always on hand in case she needed to summon flame) and began to idly toy with it, tracing the grooves in its dark surface and rolling it along her palm, in between lazy glances back towards the fishing pole she still held in one hand. It'd been a while since she last practiced with her magic; a brief mental note was scribbled down to remedy that. ❝I've never really liked the cities, even without the... unfriendly people who live there considered,❞ Oh that was putting it nicely. Fiamma was tempted to use far more coarse language to describe them. ❝so I'm a lot happier in the Outlands. It's peaceful and I'm used to it.❞
❝...I've been living up here for eight years now. Five of them alone.❞
Now she was the one carrying a solemn note like leaden weights in her words. Haa, well, everyone had their darker memories to cart around and these were hers. Fiamma seemed unfazed beyond that one exception, however, and she was even sporting a mild smile when cobalt eyes roved back over to Cadence. ❝The flameberries are worth missing, I'll tell you that. But I can't say that I know about a peach grove growing around up here. ...huh. [attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever “Oh, I can imagine! Using your hands, goodness, that sound-snrk heehAHA~!” Her sentence was interrupted by a tickling feeling at her feet, causing a surprised laugh and a face flushed with embarrassment at the sudden outburst. She peered down into the water and saw them; tiny minnows among the rocks, looping around and brushing against her feet, even nibbling at them to get some stray piece of food or algae. Most were tiny, no larger than her nails, much too small to be any use as bait. She cupped her hands and gently lowered them into the water between her feet, going slowly to avoid spooking them. As soon as her knuckles touched the cool water, the minnows scattered towards deeper water. She frowned, but lowered her hands down to the rocks and waited. Once they were sure any danger had passed, the minnows returned. She smiled and spread her fingers, and the wish wove between them as well. They still tickled, but she managed to keep her laughter soft as she listened to Fiamma. Despite her new friends, she gave Fiamma her attention, with her ears and eyes. She watched her handle a small piece of stone, but before she could inquire, Fiamma continued. “Mmm, I understand,” she said. She glanced around at the scenery that surrounded them. It was beautiful, and it filled her heart with a peace she hadn’t felt for some time. “I wouldn’t have even gone to Dagos if it wasn’t for my mother.” She lifted a hand from the water, temporarily frightening the school of fish once more. She pulled the necklace from her shirt, revealing the key that hung from the chain. “She taught me all I know about music. She told me when we were… free again… that what was in it belonged to me. When I got there, it was a storage place, filled with musical instruments she must have played before the camps. So I just… stuck around.” She looked down at her feet, no longer beaming at the fish. “It’s not all bad there. I found a second family, so I’m grateful for that, at least. And there are people I can help; it feels nice to be able to make a difference. I do miss the open air, though.” She tucked the key back in and put her hands in the water once more. Her heart sank at the familiar tone in Fiamma’s voice. It sounded just like hers. She lived by herself, and it didn’t seem to be by choice. She looked at her with an understanding nod. There wasn’t pity in her look, but it was difficult to hide the empathy she felt for her. It was a story too common among her people. How many young magi had to bury their parents? “I see,” she said. She couldn’t imagine not having anyone else. Did she really like that? She seemed to enjoy having her around… “All out here by yourself? Doesn’t that… get lonely?” She was glad when Fiamma moved on to lighter conversation, and her friendly disposition returned anew. “Really? Never? They’re great fruit, and the trees always have so many!” The gears usually turned slow in the crow’s head, but now they clicked as she felt an opportunity. “If I knew where you lived, I could probably show you where to go from there. I don’t know the woods as well as you probably do, but if I get a view from the sky, I bet I can figure out where to go! Oh, and the waterfall is beautiful! The grove is like a different world; I wish I could live there. [attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 671 [attr="class","gold"]takes a while on this oops [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see ❝Irritating beyond belief? Oh, it was.❞ The interruption didn't stop her from casually finishing the rest of the statement with her own thoughts. Grabbing at minnows was honestly something Fiamma never wanted to be stuck doing again. It was sweet relief to finally discover a better method, and usually she was very patient with all the tasks she needed to go about for just... surviving. Laying down traps, purifying water, gathering from the forest; all of these things could get to be very time consuming but Fiamma was accustomed to doing it all for the fact that it had to be done if she wanted to, you know, go on living. Independently, at least. It had never been a problem for her with the knowledge her parents had bestowed upon the young magi (as well as a hell of a lot of practice until she figured it all out) and, even with her short temper, it was rare to find a day-to-day task that Fiamma straight up hated having to do.
Damn minnows. She would choose trips into the heart of Felici to be stared at like a circus attraction by every passing human over having to catch them by hand again.
Reminiscing over her trials with the little fish had Fiamma's lips twisting into a bitter grimace, but that gave way relatively quickly for another soft flash of amusement at what Cadence was up to. The fire magi peered surreptitiously over the rock to get a better look at the other girl's attempt to play nice with the tiny bastards until the topic of conversation was shifting. Curiosity lit indigo eyes in a bright glimmer as Fiamma flit her gaze over the dangling key and she was, thankfully, treated to an explanation of its purpose a moment later. ❝You play them now?❞ Music— now that was something she heard very little of out in the forest. She could be corny and consider 'the birdsong and sounds of the river a beautiful tune in its own right' but come on, nature's chattering didn't really compare to an instrument's sound.
It was making her a bit wistful to think of music— of songs sung softly or joyously, in many voices to keep happiness alive when days within the camp walls were particularly gray —and the mention of family... it did hurt a bit. More like an ache, like an old wound deep in her chest. Cadence's unrelenting cheer did help, though, and Fiamma was experienced enough in schooling her features to neutrality that very little of it leaked out. She was just, a little sad is all. Yet ironically she huffed a laugh in response to the question.
❝I'm used to it. After years of living alone I usually end up antsy when there's a lot of people around; being alone is... normal. I manage fine that way, anyway.❞ An evasive answer, surely, but she didn't seem inclined to speak about it any further.
Good thing she wasn't being pressed about it. The resurgence of Cadence's energetic mannerisms was a welcome change (shooing the cobwebs of melancholy away quite nicely) and Fiamma blinked at her contemplatively. ...lead her to them? That would mean showing someone where she lived, for the first time. Was she okay with that? Well, Fiamma actually wasn't feeling any huge urge to recoil for the concept or drive the other magi away in fire. It was just... new. ❝Hmm. I guess, if you were planning to head into the forest anyway. It would eat at me to know that there's a worthwhile part of the forest that I haven't gotten to see yet after being here for this long.❞ Yeah, okay. Fiamma's clawed fingers began to steadily reel the line in for a second time in preparation to call it quits for the day and her eyes wandered, a strange sort of expression sliding into place. A small, thin smile and a furrow between her brows that betrayed the extent to which she was mulling over the concept. [attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever Cadence nodded energetically at her inquiry. “Oh yes, I play all of them! Ever since I got to Dagos, I’ve been practicing. I do some performances locally! Nothing big, just some nights at a small bar. I do it for the love of it,” she said, her voice taking a wistful tone as she smiled at her fish friends. “But it’s always nice to have an audience. I wish I brought my violin with me, I could play for you!” Her face lowered at Fiamma’s answer. She seemed lighthearted about it, but the way she answered made it seem like she was a bit lonely. Cadence didn’t want to press her on the matter; she had accidentally upset enough people by trying to comfort them on matters they didn’t want to discuss. It made her desire to befriend the Magi redoubled, and she grinned in determination. It was hard to keep her serious face for longer than a few moments, as it twisted into a laugh at the fish tickling her toes. She jumped up in excitement as Fiamma agreed to her offer, making a louder splash that sent the minnows far from the shore. She clapped her hands together and her face widened into her biggest smile yet. “Wonderful! Ah, it’s so lovely, I hope it’s not too far for you; there are so many peaches there, and it’s so pretty!” She babbled on excitedly, not noticing that she was repeating herself. “Wonderful- oh! I need to grab my bag still! Hold on!” With a few steps, her wet feet pit-pattered on the rocks and she took off to the sky with the grace of someone who had been flying all her life. She swooped in to the little cove where she had kept her things, and quickly returned, landing near Fiamma with the canvas messenger bag slung around her body. Once her thoughts returned to a normal pace, she put her hand to her mouth and blushed. “Oh, I uh, we don’t have to go now, if you don’t want,” she said, looking down at her feet and digging her toes into the rocks. Her hands gripped the strap of her bag nervously. “I didn’t mean to interrupt your fishing, if you wanted to stay. [attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 556 [attr="class","gold"]she's so cute wtf [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see So she has wings like a bird and tweets like one too. The sharp, upward arch of Fiamma's eyebrows was enough indication that she was impressed by Cadence's claim of being so well versed in music. It might not have ever been a part of her personal skill set— wringing a nice tune out of instruments like they were made to be in her hands —but the fire magi had always enjoyed listening to those who could when she got the chance. Yes, her wheelhouse was more geared towards wielding claws and flame. The utility didn't exactly match up to fighting strength, either, yet she still admired the people who had taken the time to learn the art. Sometimes things in the forest got a little too quiet.
It only helped that Cadence was so... enthusiastic about it. About everything, really. This wasn't the first time during their chat that Fiamma had found herself wondering where she was getting all that cheer (the girl practically radiated friendliness like sunbeams, for Arithelia's sake) and it was difficult to feel any sort of negativity in the presence of all those good vibes. She also found it hard to get a word in edgewise once Cadence went off on her excited tirade before ultimately just giving up on commenting, since the other magi was already up in the air anyway. She sighed and gave her head an incredulous shake— now how did I get myself into this situation.
Another few moments passed in the time it took Fiamma to fully reel her line in and she promptly swung it in so she could grab at the end again, squinting at the hook which was now depressingly bare of both bait and catch. Not that she'd expected the latter to just suddenly appear there. Maybe something had been nibbling at it when she'd been distracted (as rare of an occurrence that was) which was really the only explanation save for the bait managing to fall off. Unlikely. Well, it's not like Fiamma was particularly disappointed— pole fishing never caught her much on a good day. With that done the fire magi could then go about gathering together the rest of her possessions; tucking the flint safely back into her pocket, folding up the net, and getting the pole set to carry.
She was getting to her feet when Cadence touched back down. ...oh she's just now feeling embarrassed? How cute. ❝Interrupting? Technically you might have, but I'm not pressed for food or anything so there's nothing to worry about. I came down to the lake more just because I wanted to.❞ Very honest, which was the norm from Fiamma. There was no sense in trekking all the way here without bringing fishing supplies along to do something useful with the time, but she wasn't bothered by the thought of bringing nothing back now. Hauling fish was always a chore, not to mention the fact that she'd have to store them, put the equipment away, and wash the fishy stink off her hands. Not a very enticing concept. Also— she was being promised peaches in exchange. Sounded like a win-win. ❝I'm alright to head back.❞
❝My house isn't that far of a walk from here.❞ She flashed another amused quirk of a smile and moved to start walking toward the treeline. [attr="class","post"] [attr="class","text-lyrics"]I'll sing it forever “Ah. Well, I’m sorry to interrupt, in any case,” she said. Her entire posture displayed her dejected embarrassment. She never intended to bother people, but somehow always managed to. She perked up when Fiamma said she was ready to go back, and started walking. The least she could do for her was show her the grove, as an apology for bothering her. “Okay! I promise you won’t regret it!” She said, jumping in the air with a little spin and spreading her wings to glide over to Fiamma’s side. Not far from here… gosh, Cadence wondered what it would be like to live so close to such a beautiful lake. She felt a pang of longing for nature, the open air, foraging her way through the day like Fiamma did. Heck, even in Dagos, she more or less had to forage. She sighed and shook the wishful thoughts from her head; she couldn’t move her instruments out into the woods, and she had people who depended on her. She had no idea how to build shelter. Her face shifted into a pout- no idea how to fish, either. She bounded around Fiamma, making large, flighty jumps, gliding around, her face permanently fixed with joy and wonder. She always preferred flight to walking- talons weren’t exactly made for long-distance treks, and it was nowhere near as fun. During her relaxed gliding, another idea popped into her head. “Well,” she said, landing once more next to Fiamma. “I don’t have my instruments, but I could sing something for you while we walk, if you’d like? You, ah, just seemed interested when I mentioned music, is all.” She felt embarrassment creeping on her once more. She couldn’t place why, exactly, but determined it probably had to do with the feeling that she was imposing herself too much on her new friend. [attr="class","foreign"] [attr="class","dust"] [attr="class","gold"]words: 369 [attr="class","gold"]nsame honestly [attr="class","sun"]A Foreign Sun * I never thought I'd see The fire magi gave a dismissive wave of her free hand (the one with the net tucked up under her armpit, which made the arm itself sort of... half free) in the indication that she obviously wasn't interested in hearing any more apologies. Fiamma had personal reasons for not caring about the interruption— the whole fish hauling thing —but otherwise she just couldn't find much ire to dig up against Cadence. The coals of her temper were decidedly dead. This was honestly just because the air magi seemed to be so kindhearted, not an ounce of selfishness that she could detect. It really would feel like kicking a sick puppy to try and direct anger towards her.
❝Mhm, I don't think I will.❞ A lingering sense of unease still jangled Fiamma's nerve at the thought of leading someone right to her front door, her own personal Haven, but she was doing a good job of keeping the feeling reigned in. It was illogical, and she would be lying through her teeth if she claimed that years alone didn't get a little... well, lonely. Even a brief visitor would be nice, right? No need to keep imagining the worst case scenario.
At least she didn't have to stew in these thoughts for very long, since her home was only about ten minutes from the lake if you went at a brisk walk (and had long legs). She was also finding a useful bit of distraction in tracking Cadence's leaping and bounding with her eyes, quietly hoping the other girl didn't jump her way headlong into any branches, and a sharp look of surprise washed across Fiamma's expression at what she said next. ❝Sing...? Well, if you want to.❞ Yep it would be another flaming lie to claim that she wasn't curious about hearing Cadence sing. Leading someone to her house, having that someone offer to sing to her; today was shaping up to be an interesting day of firsts. A beat or two of silence passed before Fiamma punctuated her words with a casual shrug, turning her gaze back to the path ahead as she picked her way around the roots of an old tree. ❝I wouldn't mind hearing it.❞ [newclass=.gold]background-color:#fff;padding:2px;border-left:#222e8e 10px solid;font-family:century gothic;font-size:10px;color:#121b5e;width:120px;margin-top:10px;opacity:0;transition: 1s all;text-align:left;[/newclass] [newclass=.dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(1); filter: grayscale(1);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .dust]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .gold]opacity:1;transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign:hover .sun]-webkit-filter: grayscale(0); filter: grayscale(0);transition: 1s all;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar]background-color:#fff;width:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.foreign ::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color:#666;width:1px;[/newclass] [googlefont=La Belle Aurore]
