See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. The moment they realized the child was well and truly missing, they'd called someone. Surai had been there when they'd called. Though she hadn't made the phone call herself, she'd been one of the first to realize one of her children were missing. It was little Toby. The boy was- at least in her eyes- an adorable lad that held the kind of enthusiasm only a child could. He loved exploring, which was probably how he'd gotten himself lost. It had happened before, but most of the staff that worked at the orphanage knew that by now. And usually they'd be able to find him when he wandered off on one of his adventures. Not this time apparently. Though Surai wasn't able to stay the whole time- much as she'd want to stay at the orphanage overnight, she needed to get home and head to her job the next day. Immediately after that though, she'd headed back over. The rest of the kids were doing fairly well, which was a good thing. Still, there was an air of worry in the building. Understandably so to be honest. They'd been getting help from the local authorities, but there still wasn't any luck. This really was becoming a worrisome thing. Fortunately they were apparently getting some extra help in this. Or so Surai had heard. All she really cared about was finding Toby again. The poor boy much be terrified, wherever he was. The woman had nearly gone to Irilys to ask if the god knew what had happened, but she figured she should give her fellow mortals a chance. For a bit. Maybe. The Surajan woman was just passing by the entrance when she heard conversation. One voice was familiar; all the workers knew each other well at this point. So she knew the other voice was definitely no one she'd met before. Surai paused just in time to see one of her associates come in with a man she hadn't seen before. Upon being spotted, the other worker gestured to her. "Oh! This is Surai. She helps take care of the kids here too. She should know a few things about Toby, right?" With that the girl looked towards Surai, who quickly caught on. "Yes! I'm guessing you're here to help us find our missing boy?" The woman assumed, hope dawning in her features. If this man could actually help them out, she'd be more than happy to lend a hand. "I'd be more than happy to tell you everything I know."431 WORDS FOR Daniel Caim ― Hey if you can help, I won't question it

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Somewhere along the line Daniel had given up on keeping tally of the kid he’d been hired to track down and return home. Unfortunately, it seemed to be an increasingly common occurrence these days for a child to go missing. Most were just rebellious teenagers looking to make a point while others had simply wandered away on accident. Other times the children were abductees taken either by vengeful or concerned parent or by some sick bastard. There’d even been a case in which his hunt had landed him in a firefight with a half dozen thugs looking to extort a wealthy businessman for a ransom; hell of a fight that one was.
Thankfully the offer he’d been contacted with a little over two hours ago seemed to be of a more standard fare.
One of the orphanages in Camlorn seemed to have lost track of one of the many children in their care. Hardly surprising when one considered the fact that most of them were full to bursting in the wake of the zombie attack months before. Hundreds had died despite the assistance of several capable fighters, including Daniel himself. Those deaths left many children without their parents and even now it appeared to be proving difficult to find homes for them. That same attack also left a gaping deficit in manpower available to the Camlorn police force, which was probably the reason they’d had little success finding the boy thus far.
Daniel was happy to lend his skills to the search. He’d been discussing possible leads with an elderly man when a much younger woman stepped into the office where they spoke. The old wolf fixed the woman—Surai—with an appraising stare.
“Right,” Daniel said. “Name’s Daniel; I’m with the Hunter’s Guild. Let’s start with the basics like where he likes ta go or if he’s got friends outside the orphanage.” Realizing that he may have come off as too gruff, Daniel let his face soften a notch. “Don’t worry. I’ll find ‘em if I can, and my track record with this kinda thing ain’t half bad. Just tell me what ya know.”

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Hunters' Guild, was it? Looks like they really were bringing in the big guns to try finding Toby. While Surai might've had her own reserves on the Guild itself, even she'd agree a Hunter was a hell of a lot more likely to track someone down and bring them back than a normal officer. It was in their name to. Plus this one seemed alright, and Surai wasn't one to label a person until she got to know them. Already she could appreciate the fact he seemed to genuinely care, given the fact his features softened somewhat. Sending him a small smile, she did step into the office. "Alright, well... Guess the best place to start would be about Toby himself. I'm not sure what all you've been told, but he's a little boy around six years old. He's got messy brown hair and these light blue eyes that really make him stand out. I've never met anyone else with eyes quite like it: they almost look silver." It at least helped differentiate him from most of the other kids. Maybe it would prove useful. "He always liked to wander, which is probably how this all happened. Normally he gets placed with either me or another worker who knows to keep an eye on him, but he ended up with one of our newer volunteers." Whom Surai figured was feeling guiltier than anything since they'd been the one to lose their kid. "I know Toby had a few friends outside of the orphanage. We contacted all of them to see if he'd gone over to one of their homes, but none of them reported seeing him. Though I should probably write them down for you just in case..." Moving forward she borrowed a pen and piece of paper from the desk and other man so she could scribble down the names of Toby's friends. Who knows, maybe the Hunter would get better information than they would. At this point Surai was willing to try anything. As she wrote, she spoke. "As for places he might like, Toby's always had a love for cars and trains. He always wanted to go visit garages or dealerships just to see the different vehicles." Just for good measure, Surai added in the names of the different car places she could think of in town to the list, plus the numbers of the different volunteers who'd been with Toby last. After labeling them off, she handed the paper to Daniel. Apprehensive worried was etched across her features. She couldn't help it; she wanted her little boy back safe and sound. "I think that's the best I can give you, unless you had any other questions at all."

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel did his best to keep his face neutral while his listened to Surai’s description. While he’d been given a picture of the boy in question, he lacked anything useful enough to form a profile for young Toby. Knowing what his quarry looked like was all well and good, but it wouldn’t be worth much if he could get a feel for the child’s habits. That lesson was one of the first he’d learned in his days as a Hunter and it was one that served him well in his life both within and without of the Guild. A profile slowly took shape in his head as he listened. Clearly, the child was an adventurous one with a budding appreciation for cars.
Not much to go on.
It would be best to venture a guess that the child hadn’t been to see any of his friends, so Daniel eliminated that option even before Surai had finished writing down the addresses. He thanked her for the information all the same. Then, the woman wrote down a list of car dealerships that he might be able to find the child in; this information he tucked away safely in his pocket for later viewing.
“That’ll be useful,” he assured Surai. “I’ve just got one other question. How’d Toby end up an orphan? Did his parents die in that attack that happened a while back? The one with the . . . er . . . zombies.” That would give him a very important piece of information. Many of the children that he tracked were in foster care and didn’t quite adjust to the change. Some of those children wanted to return to their families; this might’ve been a similar case.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Ah now here was a good question. This was why they'd brought someone else in. Though it was a sad question all the same. Surai's face softened somewhat while she spoke. "They did, yes." she informed him with a quiet tone. "He'd been brought in with some of the other kids after that... incident. Many of them took it fairly hard, Toby included." It was a hard fact to accept, after all. Especially for a child. Even through all the chaos Surai had gone through in her childhood, at least she'd had her family with her. These kids had that stamen from them one way or another. Which was why she worked so hard to give them all the love and support she could. "That might be where he is, possibly. At least there he wouldn't be..." Ah yes, there was the paranoia again. She really, really hoped Toby had simply wandered off himself and gotten lost. Or at least was in one place under his own choice. If she found out he'd actually been taken by someone like she feared... Surai shook her head at the grim thoughts. "...Sorry, I'm just... worried. Which is probably obvious." She tried for a smile but it dropped almost immediately with a sigh. "But if he really did try going back home, at least it means no one actually took him. I can give you the address for that as well." Yet again she asked for and received another slip of paper on which she wrote the little boy's old home address on to hand to Daniel. "If there's anything else you think could help you find him, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand in whatever way I can." The woman offered. She wasn't sure what more she could do, but right now doing something was better than nothing. 312 WORDS FOR Daniel Caim ― All my brain came up with for these notes was really bad hand puns so I'll just spare you from that hell for now

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel nodded when his hunch was confirmed. He’d looked at the casualty list a few days after the incident; the death toll had been… staggering. It came as no surprise that a good number of the children would have been orphaned.
“I was there that day,” Daniel admitted. “Saved a few people; lost a few others. Saw a lotta things that I probably won’t forget for a long time while I was at it, too.” His eyes soften further at the thought that his target might’ve witnessed the death of his parents. That wasn’t a thing he would wish on anyone, especially a child. He noticed the way Surai pause and stood, crossing the short distance between them. He placed a hand lightly on her shoulder and followed with the most reassuring smile he could manage. There’d been ample time for him to practice the expression over the years.
“I’m sure he’s fine,” Daniel said confidently. “It’ll be a cold day in hell before I give up on him.” He wasn’t one for giving up. Hopefully his hunch would be correct and the little boy would just be at home, mourning his loss. It was far better than any of the alternatives he could think of, and even then, he had no intention of failing; not like he had before, not like back in the winter. As he watched Surai writing down the address he would need, Daniel swore to himself that he would find Toby and took the slip of paper when she was finished. He thought about her offer for a moment, came up with an answer, and nodded to himself.
“Actually, mind taggin’ along? Might help if the kid sees someone he knows. Don’t want him runnin off ‘cause a guy with scars shows up.” Regardless of the answer he received, Daniel would excuse himself and set out to find the address he’d been provided with.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Surai glanced up when she felt a hand on her shoulder. The gestured had been... unexpected, but appreciated. Not every stranger would offer comfort so kindly, even in a circumstance like this. It made it a bit easier for her to smile, and a hint of the tension in her faded away. Not all of it of course, but even a little help getting the worried weight off her shoulders would be gratefully accepted. "Thank you." The woman breathed with genuine feeling behind the words. "I'm trying not to worry myself to death over it but, well... There's a reason I'm emphasizing the 'trying' here." The joke was her best try at breaking the heavy atmosphere to the discussion. Sure she was horrifically worried, but she couldn't stay so down in the dumps. It wouldn't be fair to the other kids. Plus she really did need to try not worrying so much. It was going to get to be bad for her heath at this point. As she gave him the address, her offer to help was actually taken. In a way Surai didn't see coming, but upon thinking about it she realized it made some sense. "Oh! Of course." She had offered her help in any way if he needed it. And, well, she'd honestly be happy to help. Anything to take more action in finding Toby than sitting around and waiting for all eternity. So after having a brief discussion with the other man to excuse herself for the rest of the day and get someone to cover for her, Surai was right behind Daniel as he headed out. "Well then..." She began as she caught up to the man and flashed him a small smile. "Where to first? I have a feeling his... old home might be the best place to start but, well, you're the professional here, not me."284 WORDS FOR Daniel Caim ― Thank you for your patience!

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." “We’ll start at the house first and hope he’s still there,” Daniel answered. “My money’s on the answer ‘no’ but there ain’t any harm in at least givin’ the place a once over. Might even be able ta pick up a trail while we’re there.” Daniel kept a brisk, purposeful pace as he walked. Time was of the essence on job like these and he’d be damned if he’d just missed the kid.
The streets were busy enough that it was almost like looking at a completely different town. There were still hints of destruction here and there, but the place seemed like it was well on its way to a full recovery. People were walking to and fro with a certain pep it there step that warmed Daniel’s heart to witness. He could almost forget about all the horrible thing’s he’d seen the day the dead decided that they weren’t resting comfortably in their graves. Having company along the way was nice too.
“So how long have ya been workin’ with those kids?” Daniel asked. “Most be tough on ya with so many ta look after.” He waited for whatever answer he received and answered with a nod. Experience with the type of work taught him that a little light conversation helped to ease his clients’ minds and he heeded that lesson religiously, especially considering that it made his work run smoothly. Besides, it helped to pass the time while he made his way to his destination. It may’ve been much faster to just hop on his motorcycle and drive there but the walk would give him time to plan the next move should this lead prove to be a dead end.
They arrived at the address several minutes later. Like so many others on the block, the house had obviously seen better days. Most of the ground-level windows had been shattered from the outside, scattering shards of glass across the carpet. The ruin of a heavy wooden door was laid upon the floor and left the building open to the elements. What little he could see from the outside told him that the house had been ransacked by looters at some point and he had no doubt that there would be nothing of value left inside.
Daniel wasted no time entering the home. His original suspicion that the house was the victim of looters was confirmed even before he passed beyond the threshold. He stood in the doorway for several seconds, sniffing the air for any scents that may have been present. There were a few old ones here and there, but nothing that immediately caught his attention. He made to move further in but the sound of crunching glass stopped him. Daniel looked down and shifted his foot to reveal the broken picture frame. It appeared as though someone had either knocked it over or thrown it to the ground; not surprising in and of itself, but the fact that whatever picture had been contained within was missing was interesting. Daniel couldn’t imagine that looters would’ve been interested in family photos, so he concluded that Toby had indeed been here at some point.
The question was whether that was still the case.
“Looks like he was here alright,” Daniel declared, turning to Surai. “Mind checkin’ out the first floor while I look upstairs?”

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Nodding her head, Surai followed along. If they were lucky, this would be the only trip they'd need to make. If not, it was possible they'd find a trail. She just had to keep telling herself that they'd find Toby eventually. It was hard to keep the sheer amount of worry from her face, but she was trying. Baba had warned her against getting too stressed out, and she was trying to take his advice. Emphasis on trying. The conversation helped to be honest. "A few years now." A smile came back to her face; small but completely genuine. "I mean they're kids so sometimes it can get a little... energetic for me. But frankly I love each one of them. They're all wonderful in their own way. My little *najmas. I wouldn't trade them for the world. Even if I might end up getting more sleep in the trade." She joked lightly, trying to ease herself up. At least they were on the move and taking action to find Toby. They would find him. They had to. -------------- Camlorn had been well on the way to recovering from their dead rising from the grave to wreck havok, but there were still some reminders scattered about here and there. As they approached the old and worn-down home, Surai couldn't help but feel sad. If Toby really had come back here, then it definitely must have been quite the depressing return. The house was in decay and its bare bones picked clean from whatever was left. She, too, could see the signs of looting before they even got inside, which became even more glaring as they stepped passed the threshold. It was awful, plain and simple. Part of Surai almost wished Toby hadn't tried returning just so he didn't see this. The rotting husk of a place he'd once called home. Looks like he had been however. She had to take that as a good thing: meant they could find him faster. "Got it. I'll let you know if I find anything." With that she set off about her own task while Daniel would go upstairs. The rest of the house was equally decayed and ransacked as the exterior had looked. Surai was currently standing in what she could only presume was the remains of a family room. Shattered glass laid on the ground, shifted about as though others had once moved through her. But the settled dust told her it had to have been a while ago. Meaning looters, and not her little boy. There wasn't much else in the room: the furniture had been taken out leaving only drag marks behind. Nails hung on the walls where pictures were once displayed. Most of those were gone but for the personal photos of Toby's family. Surai paused before one of them, staring at the family captured within. She'd never met his parents before or even seen them considering they'd been...gone by the time she'd met Toby. Now that she actually got to see them the resemblance was painfully obvious. A young boy with his loving parents. One big happy family. But tragedy had a habit of shredding happiness to bits. Blinking rapidly, Surai shook her head. The image was hitting home but... No, she couldn't let herself get caught up in the new wave of grief washing over her. She moved on, but with a heavy heart and watering eyes. The rest of the first floor didn't yield any results: she search the emptied kitchen and even a few dissected closets to no avail. But when she found the door to the basement and took a few cautious steps down into the dark, she heard faint sounds of something scuttling in the basement's depths. Merely mice? Something else? She had nothing with her to provide light and the switch didn't give her any. Which meant she headed back upstairs to find Daniel and call up: "I found the basement and it sounds like something's down here but I can't see anything. Any luck up there?"724 WORDS FOR Daniel Caim ― Little house full of memories

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel stayed on the ground floor for a moment longer to take in the scents the shamble of a house could provide. He cursed under his breath once he discovered that any scents that might’ve been here were diluted by the breeze wafting through the shattered windows. With that avenue all but exhausted, Daniel made his way upstairs, stepping over debris and human detritus alike. He recognized further signs of vandalism upon reaching the summit: more broken glass, scattered articles of clothing, dismantled furniture. The vultures of society had clearly picked this place clean.
A swell of anger rushed through his veins like wildfire. There were always people that would use disaster as an excuse to take whatever they wished and it made Daniel sick to his core. He put aside such thoughts and refocused on the job of finding the missing boy. The first room on the right appeared to belong to Toby if the mess of toys, comic books, and the car-shaped bedframe were any indication. There was a small entertainment center poise against the wall opposite of the bed—sans any television and gaming systems that might’ve rested there. Daniel tried to trace any lingering scents but was met with the same result as before.
Damn.
He just given up on finding any clues in the room when he heard Surai calling up to him. “I’ll be right down,” he called back. “Nothin’ up here worth mentionin’ so far.” Daniel made his way back down the stairs. With any luck, Toby had just been hiding out in the basement all this time; he doubted it, but sometimes the gods saw fit to show a modicum of mercy.
At least the ones, he hadn’t dealt with thus far.
Daniel pulled his flashlight from his coat pocket and turned the beam to its highest intensity. “Stay behind me, just in case. We ain’t gonna know what’s down there ‘til we check it out, and I don’t want anythin’ happenin’ ta ya.” With that, he led the way down into the darkness.
There was an immediate change in the air upon dismounting the last step. Unlike the rest of the house, there was nowhere for the wind to seep in and scatter any scents, and there was one that overrode the dusty smell. Daniel’s hand came to a gentle rest on Black Hammer’s handle as he illuminated the room one section at a time. His search didn’t last long as a man with long black hair sprang at him from the darkness with hands curled into fists. Daniel sidestepped the man and used his own momentum against him, slamming his head into the adjacent wall. The old wolf absentmindedly tossed his flashlight to Surai with the request that she hold the beam on the assailant’s face. The now captive squatter thrashed viciously when Daniel pulled him seized a fistful of his hair, though his struggling cease once the Hunter drew his revolver and pressed it threateningly to his forehead. “Alright, scumbag, I’m gonna ask ya a few questions and you’re gonna answer them so I don’t have ta pain the wall with your brains.”
“You don’t got the guts!” Daniel narrowed his eyes dangerously and cocked back the hammer with a resounding click!; the guy changed his tune quickly enough after that.
“Alright, alright! Just don’t kill me man!”
“Depends on what ya tell me,” Daniel hissed. “Now, there might’ve been a kid here recently. Blue-eyed boy; ‘round six; brown hair. Remember someone like that?”
“Yeah, there was a kid here alright. Said somethin’ about this bein’ his old place. Told him it was mine now and to get lost.”
Bingo.
“How long ago was that?” No answer, but Daniel kneeing the slimy bastard between the legs quickly fixed that problem.
“Arrrgh, about… two hours ago,” squatter heaved between pained gasps. “Ran off with somekinda picture or something.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know, man! I ain’t the kid’s keeper!”
Daniel glared bullet holes through his captive’s skull. Something about the desperation in the guy’s voice signified to him that he’d been told the truth. There was just one question that was clawing at the back of his skull, begging to be asked.
“One last thing. Did you do anything to the kid?”
Silence…
“Thought so.” Daniel reared back and struck the man full force in the skull. He cried out in pain once before falling to the floor in a heap—alive, but very much unconscious. The old wolf glared down at the man, briefly considering blowing his brains out. After several moments of thought, he decided that he wasn’t worth the time of the bullet and holstered his gun. He had better things to do.
“Let’s go,” Daniel said. “We’ll let the police deal with him while we check on my other hunch.” He led the way out of the house after that, making his way towards the graveyard. If Toby was anything like Daniel had been at that age, he was likely missing his parents and visiting them at their graves. He hoped that for the sake of everyone involved that he was still relatively alright. He might have to reconsider his show of mercy otherwise.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. As Daniel called down, Surai's heart fell a little. Nothing worth mentioning. That only meant there was nothing upstairs but still... she had to stay determined though. They'd find him. They would. So Surai showed Daniel to the basement with only a brief glanced towards the picture from earlier. The detective ended up talking the lead, which did make Surai a little worried and curious. What could be down there that he'd have to protect her from? Apparently some crazy squatter, actually. Surai nearly lept out of her skin when the man came into view. By Irilys someone had been down here! She'd expected rats but not a fully grown man! When Daniel tossed her the flashlight she only fumbled a little from her initial shock. But now that the detective had him pinned, the situation felt a little more contained. Surai obliged and held the flashlight train on the captive's face- though she grimaced when she saw the result of his heavy impact with the wall. Daniel began interrogating him while Surai stayed silent. But she perked up when news of Toby came. “Yeah, there was a kid here alright. Said somethin’ about this bein’ his old place. Told him it was mine now and to get lost.”Surai was too relieved to hear about Toby being here that she couldn't be mad initially at the squatter for kicking the boy out of his own home. She was even more elated to hear it had only been two hours. Two hours! They were on the right path and not to terribly far behind! Though her heart had fallen earlier it was now lifted in the light of this new information. Although one question stuck out to Surai through her happiness. "Did you do anything to the kid?”Blue eyes turned back to the man sharply. Now her feelings of elation were tinged with dread. Plus, well, a good deal of rising anger. Fortunately the detective acted out her revenge for her and the man fell in an unconscious heap. Honestly she should've felt bad about that. Yet... she didn't. No one messed with her kids. No one. Surai handed Daniel back his flashlight as they headed out of the building. While they made their way to wherever Daniel led, Surai actually contacted the police to report about the squatter. Yeah she was still miffed about finding someone else in Toby's old home. Especially if he'd actually hurt the little boy. But then it was the long trek towards... the graveyard? As it came into view Surai was only temporarily confused. Then it hit her. "Oh..." Softly spoken, she now knew why they were there. After the incident, the graveyard had gotten even more residents. Ones that would stay in their grave. It was a somber sight, seeing all those tombstones laid out. However Surai wasn't focused on paying her respects to the dead. She was after someone else paying their respects to the dead. And eventually blue eyes locked onto a figure in the distance. Without a word Surai took off running. Recognition registered in her eyes; the teacher knew her children well enough to spot one from a distance. Maybe she would've felt bad for leaving Daniel behind, but right now her mind was only on one thing: Toby. The surajan woman slowed down as she got closer. No sense in bowling the boy over. In her approached she noticed the figure was hunched over one particular grave. And now that she was actually beside him she could hear the sniffles. Overtaken with both joy and sorrow, Surai felt her own eyes begin to wander. She was so very glad yet so very sad to see the boy where he was. "Toby..." She breathed. The little boy jolted for a moment before turning his head around. Tear streaks traced their way down his cheeks along with a runny nose. Those ice blue eyes of his were puffy and red from his crying. A bruise had started to form on one side of his face. The squatter. Yet at this moment she couldn't conjure up any anger. All she could do was take the last few steps forward and collapse to her knees beside her little boy. Then she pulled him into a tight, warm hug and simply held on. "You're ok. You're ok. Oh thank the Gods you're ok." Now the tears really did start coming as all the worry that had built up in her heart over the past few days finally evaporated. Toby was found.

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel kept a hurried pace as he and Surai made their way to the graveyard. He had no earthly idea of how badly the bastard squatter had hurt his quarry and his concern was palpable. They arrived in record time to begin their search. It wouldn’t take long for his companion to spot the boy hunched over a grave. She ran for him while Daniel continued at a brisk pace to allow them their reunion. Even at this distance, he could see the hints of a bruise forming on the side of Toby’s face and his ire rose at the sight of it. The sight brought back too many painful memories from his youth; despite that the old wolf breathed a sigh of relief. He hadn’t failed to save a child this time.
He stooped beside the pair and knelt, placing a comforting hand on each of their shoulder’s. “It’s alright now, kiddo,” Daniel said. “We’ve got you.” Hints of a smile touched his features before he turned his sights on the tombstone set into the earth. He read the bold script etched into the stones.
Hear lies Adrian and Marcus Rayne.
July 19, 2561 - October 12, 2593
May 27, 2563 – October 12, 2593
May their next lives bring them greater fortune than their last.
Daniel bowed his head and offered a silent prayer for the deceased couple and all the others that died that day. Returning his attention to the situation at hand, Daniel said, “I know what it feels like losin’ your parents, kiddo. Ain’t no sense in holdin’ it back; you’ll just end up hurtin’ more that way.” He spoke from experience and it showed in the sad smile he gave the pair.
“Just let it out.”

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Surai acknowledged Daniel when he pat the two of them by lifting her head slightly. Her own eyes were watery now, and the expression on her face was completely open and honest. It showed the pure relief she felt with them finding the little one. Yet it also revealed just how stressed she’d been with worry over his well-being. Even so she managed a smile before turning her attention back to Tobias. The child was crying. The sounds of it were muffled from where he was currently buried in Surai’s embrace, but the sobs made his shoulders jump and shake with each inhale and exhale. Surai had managed to reign in her own feelings and was now focused solely on comforting her little one. Toby needed the support more than anyone. Fortunately Daniel seemed to understand that. They stayed like that for a while. Although Toby hadn’t shown any outward indication that he’d heard Daniel, he seemed as if he was taking the advice. By the time he finally lifted his head, Surai’s own tears had dried. She wiped Toby’s face free of his, and offered him the warmest smile she could manage. ”I’m so glad we found you, Toby." She repeated. It was said earnestly, and meant with every fiber of her being. ”Everyone misses you so much. They’ll be so happy to see you again! So let’s get you back, ok? Everyone’s waiting for you."Toby nodded his head slightly, but kept his eyes towards the ground. “….I-I’m in trouble. Mr. Allen is g-gonna be m-m-mad.” He hiccuped out the words, wiping away some snot on his arm. ”Mr. Allen won’t be mad, Toby. I promise. No one is mad at you." Surai insisted gently. That got the little boy to raise his head and dare a look at her and Daniel. “….P-Promise?” ”Promise." Surai even held up her pinky towards the boy. He eyed it for a moment before hooking his own with it. Their hands shook once before they let go. Then Surai stood and helped Toby to his feet. A picture was clutched tightly in one hand, while his other stayed firmly attached to Surai’s own. the teacher turned towards Daniel and gave him another smile. This one with a lot more strength behind it. ”Thank you, Daniel. For everything. I think it’s about time we head back though." She’d be able to talk with him more there. Her first priority was getting Toby back home though.

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel averted his eyes from the weeping child, an awkward smile stretching his face. He never got used to such intense outpourings of emotion after he completed a job like this, though this was far better than the alternative. Tears of joy and relief were easier to endure than those brought on by grief and loss. He would’ve liked to say that the latter occurred less often than the former; it’d be a blatant lie.
“Surai’s right, kiddo,” Daniel said awkwardly. “Nobody’s gonna be mad at ya. They’re just worried, that’s all.” The old wolf was thankfully familiar with that concept at least. It brought back a memory of the hellish experience he’d endured a few months back. His own mother had apparently been worried sick about him. He couldn’t help but wonder where she was living now, what she was doing.
Surai’s voice demanded his attention and brought him back to the current situation. “Yeah, I think you’re right. Job ain’t finished until I get the kid home. Least it ain’t in my book.” He followed the pair back to the orphanage and watched the small elated welcome home with the same awkward smile he displayed when they originally found Toby. Of course, he was offered payment for his services that he turned down; he didn’t exactly need it and seeing the child safe and sound was payment enough.
“I feel for the kid,” Daniel said. “He reminds me a little bit of me when I was that age.” His smile saddened. “At least I was fast enough this time.”
