I'm just out to find the better part of me Parkour was fun and all. But sometimes she got sick of buildings. And hell, she loved her time at the Runic University too, but she needed spice in her life! Excitement! Something new!
Which was why she was sitting upside down in a tree. Why did it always have to end with her in a tree? Dehlia honestly didn't know. Perhaps it was a leftover from living in the woods and racing her brother through the trees? Whatever was the case, she was upside down, her legs folded to grasp the branch as she hung.
If she stayed upside down too much longer, the blood would rush to her head and her face would be as red as her hair. And with that she did a pull-up and sat on the branch instead, watching as people passed by under her. She was curious by nature, and she liked observing people. Dehlia had this game she played with herself where she tried to guess the occupation of each person by what they looked like.
Oooh this guy was interesting. Scars and a...stoic expression? Meh the word was good enough for a description. Hmmm what could he be? She challenged herself to guess before he walked under the tree she was in. A....hunter!
Now you might think that's where the game would end. Nope. That's why she'd been upside down in the first place. As he walked under her tree (because let's face it nobody else was going to claim the tree with a crazy redhead hanging out in it), she folded her legs again and hung upside down in front of him.
"Hey mister can I ask you a question? Are you a hunter?" She asked the question, her violet eyes sparkling with mischief and interest and her distinctive long red hair hanging from her head. She'd gotten her red hair from her father. Dehlia smiled to show she was friendly. | NOTES: I honestly have no explanation for this. “ The Righteous Side of Hell." It had been an interesting week for Daniel thus far. His days following the meeting with Great Huntress had been filled to bursting with planning a new training regime for up and coming Hunters as well as scouting new recruits to add to the Guild’s decimated ranks. The latter part was a chore in and of itself due to the fact that he’d taken to personally screening each and every new recruit for qualities that he himself held near and dear. An additional difficulty that Daniel tried his damnedest not to think about was the task set before him by the Huntress: find Arithelia. It was a headache inducing conundrum; not only would he have to find the fallen goddess, but he would have to survive long enough to call Kalidas and alert his patron to her presence—all while trying not to die in either the crossfire between two deities or while defending himself against the living embodiment of magic itself.
Considering that, it was no great leap in logic to understand why Daniel had chosen to take a walk to attempt clearing his head. Hands pocketed in his trench coat hair free of his usual ponytail, Daniel strolled beneath the trees in Central Park as he continued to rebound ideas off the walls of his head. He sighed for what may have been the hundredth time and wished for something to take his mind off work for a few minutes. As fate would have it, he got his wish in the form of a red-haired girl hanging from a branch. He blinked several times at the girl and the question she asked, unsure of what to think.
“Uh… yeah,” Daniel said awkwardly. He squinted his eyes at the woman; something seemed… familiar about her, though he couldn’t place why. “So… what’s the deal, kid? Why’re ya hangin’ upside down from a tree?” And why is it that my life just keeps getting weirder?

I'm just out to find the better part of me So this guy was indeed a hunter. She did a fist pump at her victory in her own game, but it was upside down so it looked more than a little bit odd. Then she got called kid and she rolled her violet eyes. She was twenty four. Of course, to some that might be seen as a 'kid'. But she brushed that aside in favour of his question. A question that was framed with a bit of confusion. She grinned.
"I feel more at home when I'm higher up. I like running from tree to tree, or building to building. As for being upside down...well that was the logical way to get your attention. And it worked, didn't it?" Dehlia smiled.
"So if you're a hunter, what weapons do you like?" Then she squinted.
"Is that polite to ask? I'm sorry I'm just very curious. Swords are good, so are guns. Same with the bow and arrow. Or maybe you're a runic hunter...although I haven't seen you around the university so I don't know about that guess as much." She closed one eye and screwed up her face in thought.
"I like guessing at things, but I like knowing the answers better." She truly was an addict to knowledge. Oh, she supposed she was being rude, not introducing herself. Hmm...but he seemed rather uncomfortable with her upside down. She pulled herself up to the branch, sitting on it before climbing down lower and jumping to the ground. It was as easy as 123 for Dehlia. She put a hand out.
"Name's Dehlia. I'd say my middle name's curiosity but...well it's just not." She grinned at her own, lame joke. | NOTES: She's still weird but not upside down weird. WORDS: 284 |

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." “I guess ya could say that,” Daniel said noncommittally. “Well, least ya didn’t jus’ drop down on me out of nowhere. It ain’t healthy ta surprise a guy that’s been around as long as I have.” The man reached down into his coat pocket to retrieve his cigarettes and scowled disappointedly as his discovered that he was down to his last one. Had he really been smoking that much recently? It was entirely possible considering the week he’d been having; at least his ribs were on the mend.
The old hound had just placed the cigarette in his mouth and was searching for his lighter when the barrage of questions came. What weapons did he use? Was it rude to ask that question? The red-head scarcely paused for breath before launching into an explanation of her own skills. Daniel almost opened his mouth to comment but the next word volley kept him from doing so. He eventually gave up on trying to keep up with the conversation and lit his cigarette, taking a shallow puff to prevent his still mending ribs from flaring again. Smoke streamed out of his mouth as Daniel continued to listen, content to remain silent until the girl was finished with her rambling. He caught snatches of what she said, or at least enough to know how he would answer whenever he could get a word in edgewise.
Eventually, the girl finally stopped talking and dropped gracefully to her feet. Daniel blinked at the girl. “Ya done, kid?” He waited a few seconds just to make sure before he continued. “Alright, first thing. I use revolvers and handguns mostly, but I’m pretty damn good with any gun ya can think of; also got some other skills, but we ain’t got the time for me ta list ‘em all. And no, it ain’t rude. Least it ain’t to me. Third, I wasn’t exactly the type ta grow up with that kinda money, so no to the runic thing.” Daniel took the girl’s proffered hand in his own and at it a shake. “And the name’s Daniel.” Now that she wasn’t upside down, Daniel was able to get a proper look at her and he was stuck with something that bordered on recognition.

I'm just out to find the better part of me "Yeah I figure it's probably best not to drop down in front of people and surprise them terribly. I don't want to have to pay the medical bills if someone happens to have a heart condition. I just don't have the money." She was partially joking, but also she really wasn't. She was broke. Like actually broke. She was lucky to be able to afford her food, and her apartment was putting her into more debt every moment. It was not funny how badly off she was. But then Dehlia was also partly joking because hey what's the chance of her luck being quite that bad, y'know?
She also noted that he waited until she had finished firing her questions at him. Dehlia was appreciative of the fact he WAS in fact going to answer her, as she knew she could come off as a busy body sometimes. Oh good he didn't see it as rude. Dehlia was inquisitive at her very core and she loved it when people were willing to give her answers to her many many questions.
"I have a noble paying my way. Which means I am gonna need a shit ton of jobs to make up for that so I can pay it off, hopefully before I die." Hey, that was her being extremely optimistic, right?
"I can be positive. I'm positive I'm never going to pay this fucking thing off." She shook her head, muttering the words. She swore like a sailor and if anyone had any problem with it they could tell her. The chances of it doing any good was...dubious at best. But hey, they could certainly try, right?!?
"Ah guns. I'm not so good with those. Swords, yes. Bow and arrow, sure. Knives are fine, as long as I don't have to lob 'em at someone. Can't hit the broadside of a barn with a beachball though honestly. But if I get in trouble, I can always run away on the roofs of buildings and they'll hopefully just stare slack-jawed right? Hopefully they would. I don't really know if parkour is something people are accustomed to seeing yet or what." She did talk a lot. Especially if someone was interesting and willing to talk.
"Good to meet you Daniel the Hunter." That's when she saw the odd look on his face.

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Good gods, this girl could chat up a storm! Daniel almost felt like he was facing down a machine gun the used words as ammunition rather than bullets. He could barely hear himself think as he bore the brunt of the girl’s chatter and gave his level best trying to discern the important details. He gathered enough snippets of information to form a working profile in his head. Her name was Dehlia; she was a runic student paying her way through school with a noble’s money and she was working to pay off that debt; she didn’t like guns, but she was good with swords and bows. And, she was apparently good at running away when the need arose as well. Daniel nodded, both to himself and to present the illusion that he was still listening carefully while he thought. None of the information explained why he felt as though he’d seen the girl before. The hair was familiar, but the eyes… the eyes were strange to him.
Then again, the girl herself was more than a little strange, so that wasn’t unusual in and of itself.
He returned to the conversation just in time to hear Dehlia ask her question. “Huh? No, I was just thinkin’…” He let the thought trail off for a moment. “Kid, you look like somebody I used ta know. Might just be the hair, but I knew a guy with hair like that once and not a lotta people do.” Daniel narrowed his eyes as he partook of another drag on his cigarette and released spurts of dark-colored smoke as he spoke again. “Who’s your old man, kid?”

I'm just out to find the better part of me She heard him wonder aloud and say he was thinking. She stood there, her arms behind her, one hand holding the other wrist as she waited. It was one of the more comfortable positions for her. She heard him say she looked like someone he used to know, and she squinted. Then he asked who her father was and she sighed. Someone from her dad's hunter days likely.
The real question now though was if this guy meant her dad harm or not. She rubbed the back of her neck idly. Well she could ask she supposed. While she was figuring it out, Dehlia was uncharacteristically quiet.
"It depends. Do you mean him harm or not?" Her father was an ex-hunter who had married a magi after all. It was better that she asked first. She could've just given her dad's first name, but his first name was so damn unique she couldn't do it. What were the chances of there being two men named Ulysses in Ethea? Like...the chances of that seemed slim.
He did seem to be looking at her hair. Well, that wasn't really something weird her hair was pretty different. Hell, her eyes were too. Purple was a mutation. Genetics wise she kind of hit the lottery. Tall, slim, high metabolism, purple eyes and bright red hair. And no freckles...which she had a distinct feeling other redheads would resent her for. Why she didn't know. She'd always liked seeing freckles on women. They were adorable.
"Guy you're thinking of, he have red hair too?" She had her bow and arrow and sword on her so she could fight if the guy meant her or her family harm. Dehlia knew that if it came to that she probably would not win because this guy was obviously a fairly skilled hunter. | NOTES WORDS: 304 |

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Suspicion bloomed in Daniel’s mind upon noting the sudden shift in demeanor. Years of dealing with shifty thugs of one description of another had taught him the basics of how to notice such thing. Dehlia was showing a few hallmarks of someone with something to hide and old habits put him instantly on guard. Even without these signs, the query she’d presented him with and the way she’d presented it was cause for suspicion on its own merits.
Do you mean him harm?
“That depends,” Daniel mimed. “Don’t normally care ‘bout those things, but I’ve made a lotta enemies over the years.” He paused a moment to take another drag on his cigarette. “If it’s the guy I’m thinkin’ of, you ain’t gotta worry about me hurtin’ ‘im. I owe the guy for somethin’ and I doubt he’d be happy if I hurt his kid somehow.” Gods knew there would be hell to pay if someone every brought any harm to his little girl. That would likely end with him standing atop a small mountain of fresh corpses to offer to Kupiec.
“Yeah, the guy’s got red hair too. Been a while since I’ve seen ‘im. Don’t even know if he’s still alive. Gotta be gettin’ up there in years by now if he is.” Daniel hadn’t thought about Ulysses in years. It would be nice to know if the old man was still alive or not. He owed him a great deal for helping to cool his boiling anger after all.

I'm just out to find the better part of me She heard the answer about how it depended, that he'd made a lot of enemies over the years. Well that was the best answer she could hope for. And then he continued talking about the guy he was personally thinking about and she rubbed the back of her neck, displacing the red hair for a moment. It was a nervous habit of hers.
"Well my dad's name is Ulysses. Pretty unique name so I'm thinking I don't have to say his last name. And yeah I get my hair from him. But like you, he has lots of enemies so I had to check. Retired hunter seems to come with that unfortunately." That and her mother but she wasn't going to mention that. Besides, her father's name had changed from his hunter days. He had been known as Ulysses Glenn before he met her mother.
"If he's the guy you're thinking of, I'm glad he made a good impression on someone." It was all she said. Where her father was concerned she didn't always talk that much about him. That sort of came with the fact he'd hidden everything he was from her the whole of her childhood. Getting up in years now eh? Well her dad was getting older. She didn't really consciously think about that. It sort of hurt to think that she might lose her last remaining parent. Her face darkened slightly at the thought.
Magi were supposed to live longer, but her mum had died when she was sixty-five. Pretty young for a magi. And her dad was sixty years old. Senior status Dehlia supposed. She sighed, shaking her head at the thought of losing him. She didn't like what he had hid from her, but she didn't hold it against him too much. He was still family.

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel turned his head so that his hair would hide the slight smile that appeared on his face. So, the old codger was still alive, huh? It warmed his heart to know that the old man had somehow managed to survive all that time. He guessed that he shouldn’t have expected any less from the old man; previous experience had told him that he stubborn enough to put a mule to shame.
“So Ulysses made it through, huh?” Daniel said. “Good ta hear. Was afraid the old guy might’a kicked it a while back. Guess his fangs weren’t blunt after all.” He still remembered the first time that he’d met the older hunter. He’d been on the trail of a few magi he and his squad mates had been tracking for days. The trail split off into five separate ones that forced them to split up to follow. Another day of trekking through the woods finally allowed him to catch up to the fleeing magi, but Ulysses interfered just as he’d positioned himself to strike the final blow.
The fight had lasted for hours. Bullets arced between them, blades would occasionally clash, and all the while each combatant searched for an advantage over the other. Duel had ended in a draw in the end and Daniel’s prey eluded him. Additionally, Ulysses had planted the seeds of doubt within Daniel that the cause he was fighting for was just. The words he spoke to him during that fateful duel took well to the fertile soil of his burgeoning misgivings.

I'm just out to find the better part of me "Nope he's still alive. My mum died, but he's still around." She still wasn't used to the fact that most people visited their parents far more than she herself did. It made sense for her because going to see her dad could lead to someone following and killing him. She didn't want to lose the last person she cared about just because she was so eager to talk to them.
She'd already lost her brother and her mother. Losing her dad was the very last thing she wanted. She sighed a bit at the thought.
"Nope fangs aren't blunt. He taught me how to use a sword." She smiled.
"Can I ask how you met my dad out of curiosity? He doesn't talk much about what happened to him before he went and retired as a hunter and then hid. It would be interesting to see another person's view of him." She always found herself curious. Curious about her father, but curious about everything else as well. It was a habit of hers that she really had no way of breaking, and Dehlia had never wished to. She had learned so many wonderful things by being insatiably curious and that wouldn't stop now.
"Seems he made a good impression on you anyways." She supposed that wasn't entirely fair thinking that way about him. After all, her mother had quite obviously loved him too. They had risked death to be together despite hunters. And she wouldn't exist if they hadn't...wow that was something to think about.
"My mum taught me how to use my bow. I like to think I'm a pretty good shot but I could probably use work." She chuckled somewhat wryly at the idea. | NOTES: aahh help I dunno how to direct this WORDS: 288 |

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel hesitated when Dehlia asked about his connection to Ulysses. That particular piece of history wasn’t exactly one of his proudest moments; in fact, he’d sooner forget most of that day altogether than recount all the blood he spilled. It was also out of respect for the old man. Ulysses hadn’t told the girl anything for a reason and he wouldn’t do him the disservice by telling her without his consent. Instead, he opted for a vaguer explanation.
“Let’s just say that we didn’t exactly get off on the right foot,” Daniel explained. “The old guy had ta teach me a few lessons, and I wasn’t what ya’d call a willin’ student at first.” Or the next time after that for that matter. In fact, it had probably taken a few times crossing paths for Daniel to finally listen to his former mentor for more than a few seconds without it coming to a fight. He’d always respected the man for his skill and the bull-headed tenacity with which he defended the magi Daniel hunted for sport; later, he came to respect his ideals enough to take a few of them as his own, turning away from the bloody path he’d set himself on. He doubted that he would ever repay that kindness in full.
Daniel finished his cigarette and dropped it to the ground, smothering the glowing end underneath his boot. “So, your mom taught ya how ta use a bow and I’m guessin’ ya learned swords from your pops, huh? And you’re light on cash too…” He paused for a moment, carefully measuring his words before they ever left his mouth.
“Ever thought about bein’ a Hunter?”

I'm just out to find the better part of me Didn't get off on the right foot huh? Dehlia chuckled slightly at that. She heard the bit about an unwilling student and laughed.
"That sounds like my dad. I think all the people he's taught have been at least a little unwilling at times. My brother and I were always hesitant to enter into a lesson with him. Would always rather be playing. I don't regret focusing on the lessons now though." She grinned. Dehlia heard him seemingly muse about learning bow and arrow from her mum and swords from her father. She heard the musing about her being light on cash too and her shoulders slumped.
"Yes. My rune studies have put me into debt a fair bit. I grab money from wherever I can. Completely legally and fully worked for though I assure you." People were only too eager to assume you stole when you were in debt. It was an odd sort of thing, like the poor couldn't help but steal to try to make their way. People were exceedingly odd at times, thinking everything belonged to them rightfully. The world didn't revolve around each individual person, even if they themselves were their world. Dehlia heard the question about considering being a hunter and she gave a humming sort of hmm, shifting her lips to one side of her face in a face.
"I have, briefly. I've heard the money's pretty good so that was a consideration. However, I don't hunt magi. That's something that's sort of non-negotiable so hunter really isn't an option for me." She didn't want to be sent to kill someone of the same race as her brother and mother. They were her dear family, and she felt a duty to not hunt their race like so many were prone to do. | NOTES WORDS: 299 |

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." An arched eyebrow followed in the wake of Dehlia’s reasoning. “The money’s great if ya know how ta keep yourself alive long enough ta make it,” Daniel said. “If you’ve got any of the skill that Ulysses had, I think ya’ve got that part handled pretty well. And hunting magi ain’t the only thing that we do.” It might have comprised most of what they’d been doing for the past eight years, but Daniel was looking to change that soon enough.
“Don’t know what all you’ve heard, but not every Hunter is just some psycho lookin’ ta cause trouble. Some of us are actually tryin’ ta do some good for the world, myself included. Might not be many, but that’s why I came back. Help us find the trail again.” He might have been looking for that trail beneath mountains of bone and rivers of blood, but he knew that it still existed somewhere; the difficult part was getting other to follow it. Hell, he’d probably have to drab more than a few of them in his wake to make it happen. The rest . . . well . . . the pack would be stronger in the long run when the less intelligent members were gone. Hunter were meant to adapt to changes.
“How ‘bout you and me take a walk for a few minutes and I’ll let you in on a few things?” Daniel stepped around Dehlia and continued his aimless walk through the park. If the young girl chose to follow him, that would be grand. If not, it was still a nice day for a walk at least.

I'm just out to find the better part of me Dehlia heard the hunter speak about how it was great money if you could stay alive long enough and Dehlia grinned.
"So far I'm doing pretty well on that front. Twenty four years and counting to be precise. Not just my dad's training. My mother was the toughest woman I've ever known." Dehlia still dearly missed her mother. She had thought she had had so much more time left with her, her being a magi and all. But no, she passed away and Dehlia was left with all her teachings.
"One of the things she taught me was that the world needs to live in balance. Killing a magi puts the balance out, just like anyone or anything else killing someone would." Her mother's belief was in the circle of life. When there weren't enough predators in an area, the prey grew in number. The predators took what they needed, and it maintained a balance.
"The hunters I have seen don't keep the balance. I'm glad to hear you're different from the others. If my dad gave it his all in a fight, somehow you gained his respect. Whether from the fight or otherwise." Her dad might have held back a lot of information from her, but there was one thing Dehlia knew: she could trust her father's judgment. It was always pretty excellent, she had to admit despite herself. She heard him talk about going for a walk and talking and she nodded, following him and walking beside him. Dehlia was able to fairly comfortably match his stride too. For once she wasn't really dodging ahead.
