“ The Righteous Side of Hell." The first time that Daniel had opened and glanced over the contents of the off-shore account Maevia had set up for him he’d been forced to sit down or risk falling on his ass. The old wolf wasn’t sure of what exactly to expect from the monthly stipend, but it certainly hadn’t been as many zeros as he’d seen. His time as a Hunter had been a lucrative one and this deal with the god of commerce was shaping up to be a rival. Now, armed with more funds than he knew what to do with, it was time to reestablish contact with a few associates from the old age.
To that end, Daniel decided to dig up an old contact from his less than faultless past. Theron was a good enough kid; reliable, discreet, and able to get his sticky little hands on anything and run it to the proper location with relative ease. That had been a few years ago and now the rumblings that the old wolf still heard were saying that Theron had made his way up in the world. It was a good thing in the end, because it likely meant that there were fewer hoops to jump through and it only sweetened the deal that Theron was someone that he already trusted; not as much need for him to comb every little detail for some sort of loophole or trick.
Still, it paid to be a little on the cautious side. A misstep in underworld was likely to be your last.
As promised, Daniel waited for the young man in one of the old drop points. The building was old—very old—and full of refuse that might have pointed to human habitation. It might have looked nice on the outside, but that was only a ruse to distract prying eyes from the activities and meetings that often occurred within its walls. The old wolf did his best to ignore the smell as he extracted a cigarette that he promptly lit and placed between his lips. For want of anything better to do he looked idly at his watch to watch the seconds tick by.

Daniel Caim was a name Theron had not seen or heard for a very long time, and when it had appeared under the caller ID on his phone, he’d almost thought it was a mistake. But the voice on the other end did indeed belong to what he’d thought was a retired client, and over the course of their discussion a meeting had been arranged. What exactly he wanted was still a little up in the air— from what he’d heard, the old Hunter had been retired for some time, and he’d never been the sort for drug use— but at least the location was a familiar one. Made things easier, that way. For his part, Theron had arrived early to watch their old drop point from what felt like a safe distance on the roof of one of the other nearby buildings, just in case old man Caim was up to something. Their relationship in the past had been a decent one, sure, but you never knew with people you hadn’t spoken to in years. But by the time their meeting was meant to begin, nothing seemed out of place, though, so he made his way back down to the street and inside not long after Daniel disappeared through the door. With his hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket, and a quick check to ensure he’d evaded the notice of any prying eyes, Theron wandered into the building that had once served as a drop point for the two of them. He found Caim smoking a bit further in, eyes wandering idly, and called to him across the space as he drew closer. “Thought you were retired, pal— or did you miss me that much?”Daniel Caim

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel had already smoked half of his cigarette by the time Theron had decided to join him in the dilapidated building. He’s almost forgotten just how much of a smart-ass the kid could be, but he smiled all the same as he expelled a plume of smoke into the air. “Yeah, well, ya know about what folks say about old dogs and new tricks, right, kid? ‘Sides, it ain’t like you didn’t miss me too.” The old wolf finished his cigarette and dropped the still burning remains to the floor where he extinguished the ember beneath his bootheel.
“Heard you’ve been keepin’ busy. Word is ya’ve got your own operation now.” He pocketed his hands and turned to face the young man. “Good thing too. It’ll be easier ta get what I need. Thinkin’ about gettin’ back into the game and I’m gonna need a steady supply of guns and a few other odds and ends ta do it.”
He shrugged. “You and me’ve got a history and ya happen ta be someone I think I can trust. Plus, I can make it worth your while.” To illustrate his point, Daniel pulled one of his hands out of his pockets and with it an unmarked gold coin. He flipped the coin through each of his finger before lightly tossing it to Theron so the man could inspect it for himself. “Consider that a down payment. There’ll be more of it for ya down the line. What do ya say, kid? Ready to partner up again?”

Oh good, Caim was smiling. That was usually a good sign at the start of these things, especially after the dry spell in their interactions that had been going on until tonight. It meant he was probably remembered well enough in the ex-Hunter’s mind, which hopefully made any potentially sour ends to this meeting less likely. Finding a spot on the wall nearest Daniel to lean against, Theron flashed the man a lopsided grin of his own. “Mhm. Dunno how I survived without you,” he replied, trying and failing to keep a straight face. He shrugged as the other went on, nodding once. “Something like that, yeah. Small bunch, still, but we can get you whatever you need.” Which, apparently, was mostly guns. Although he was able to keep up his smile, something about Theron’s expression sobered as this information was conveyed. Guns were an easy enough thing to get his hands on, but it was the intent Caim had in mind for them that was starting to eat at him. Already, he could hear Orion’s voice in his head, snapping something at him about the hypocrisy of his little internal dilemma, but still. Being his own boss provided some very different choices to the ones he’d had back when he and Caim had last dealt with one another, and internally he had begun to debate whether he ought to take advantage of that. Snatching the tossed coin out of the air, Theron turned it over in his hand a few times while the debate raged on. “Started robbing banks or something in your free time?” he asked, glancing up with a raised brow. Though it could be easily exchanged, what he’d been handed wasn’t exactly a common form of currency. Then came the all-important question. Ready or not? Lacking a satisfactory answer, Theron answered with a question of his own. “Why’d you come out of retirement, anyway? Not enough excitement for you at the bingo parlor?” Maybe, just maybe, the man’s answer would help him decide. Daniel Caim

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." “Glad ta see that ya missed me, kid,” Daniel said. “Ain’t exactly been the same without ya.” For one thing, it’d been much more difficult to procure enough armaments and ammunition as certain illicit items of a highly illegal nature that were necessary for his line of work, let alone secure the funds to ensure he remained clear of any wrongdoing. That needed to change if he wanted to keep a steady supply of dead criminals flowing and his soul soundly in place.
His lips twitched into a small grin once again when Theron confirmed that he and his band would be capable of providing for his needs. The smile faded almost as quickly as it had appeared as the younger man questioned where he’d acquired the coin in his own special way. “Let’s just say a the guy I’m workin’ for ain’t too keen on payin’ the old-fashioned way. ‘Side’s, that coin’s unmarked, so there ain’t much chance of it bein’ traced; bet ya’d be able ta get just about anything for it, ain’t that right?” Hell, there were certain circles in the underworld that only dealt with the currency. It was easily mutable, extremely valuable, and more importantly it tended to maintain that value regardless of what disaster befell the world at large.
And then came the tricky part. Why’d you come out of retirement, anyway? The old wolf showed his years in the way his shoulder slumped as he reached for another cigarette. “Truth is I couldn’t think of how else ta do what I needed to. The Guild’s lost its way an’ I couldn’t just sit back and let it keep goin’ the way it is. That ain’t gonna work forever.” Daniel took a deep breath and filled his lungs with a cloud of dark relief.
“I ain’t exactly the type of guy ta solve problems with words,” he admitted in a cloud of dusky smoke. "This life is all I know: guns, fighting, hunting, killing. It’s simple and it might not be enough.” The man turned a hard look on Theron, jaws set and features somber. “I plan ta save the guild from itself and drag as many of the young wolves along as I can. Like that kid brother of yours.”
The mask cracked a few moments later into a cock-sided grin. “And bingo ain’t all that bad, kid. Try it sometime; could be fun.”

| Theron took a moment or so to debate whether the old Hunter could have been more vague after Daniel answered him, turning the question over in his head in much the same way that he flipped the coin he had been given in his hand. “Oh yeah,” he nodded, glancing down at the thing again. “No trace, easy enough to exchange… I’m not complaining. Just curious, yeah?” And also a bit disappointed that he hadn’t learned much, but at least as far as this went, it didn’t matter for now.
Though he kept up traces of his smirk, Theron found himself for once feeling dead serious as he listened to the elder man’s explanation of his intentions. Every bit of inflection, every little hint or change in Daniel’s expression, he watched closely, determined to glean as much as he could from this. Words were all well and good, and by those alone, he could have assumed that the Hunter’s goal was a worthy one, and one he would not regret supporting. But he of all people would know how misleading words could be, and so wanted to be as absolutely sure as he could be.
And in the end, he found himself relatively satisfied. As far as he could tell, Daniel was being honest with him, and what he’d heard was something he felt he wouldn’t mind getting behind— especially if it meant there might be hope yet for his little brother. So, slowly, Theron nodded. “Alright then.” His signature smirk returned in full. “I think we’re in business, then. Just let me know what all you need, and where you want it delivered, and we’ll get the job done.” There was a short pause, then, “… I hope you end up successful. Got a lot of work ahead of you, seems like.” | |

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel smiled broadly at that, a gesture so foreign to his features that it almost hurt. “Good ta hear it kid,” he said. “Gotta say, it takes one hell of a load off my chest knowin’ I’ve got your support.” Indeed, Theron’s crew would eliminate most of the danger associated with gathering some much-needed backing and he wouldn’t feel as soiled knowing who his arms were coming from. Hopefully there would be less blood on his hands now; gods knew that there would be gallons of it in the days to come.
There was a sigh from the old wolf when Theron next spoke. “Kid, you don’t know the half of it. Bright side is that it might all pan out one day. Just gotta get the ball rollin’.” He tossed a glance in the young man’s direction. “Who knows? Maybe one day that kid brother of yours ‘ill be leadin’ the Guild in my place, eh?” That eventuality would take a lot more time and effort, but he was sure that he’d be able to pull it off. The kid was young and full of hate, but there was potential there; potential for great things if he could be shaped in just the right ways. Not unlike himself when he was that age if he were being completely honest.
Maybe I can keep him from making the same mistakes, Daniel thought. That alone was worth its weight in gold to him; if he could prevent just one person from flowing the same road he did, that would be enough of an achievement for him.
“Anyways, kid, I’ve got some business ta attend to. I’ll send ya the details in a couple of days.” He pushed off the wall and started to walk away, pausing after only a few steps. “And, hey, let me now if ya have any trouble. I’ll be sure ta sort that out if I can.” Daniel left the details of what “trouble” meant purposefully vague as he exited the building into the night air; the meaning wouldn’t be hard to guess given what had been discussed. Besides, there was still work to be done before he could call it a day.
