[attr="class","notafraid"] [attr="class","naimg"] [attr="class","naimgborder"] [attr="class","nalyrics"]Just feel the energy Just know who the ENEMY is [attr="class","nabody"]Samuel was once again told by his superiors to go take a report on an incident. They seemed to like to do it, and it wasn't like he really minded. He was particularly good at negotiating, and this allowed him to help out some magi who were being accused for nothing. Besides, he'd earned a motorbike now to get places, so any excuse to ride it was perfectly fine with him. Samuel pulled up and dismounted the monochrome motorcycle and headed into the place he'd been told to. It had apparently been a gunfight of some sort. He was moving up in the world, being sent to investigate this one. Firearms were a sticky situation for most. For the sake of the red tape he hoped the one firing had been a hunter. He wouldn't wish it on any innocent magi, but he did NOT like paperwork either. That's when he looked up and saw a familiar face. His eyebrows raised and his eyes widened slightly. "Well that's a face I didn't expect to see on the job again. Hey Theron." He smiled, and instead of simply the pleasant polite smile he gave everyone else, this one was sort of sly. His dark eyes had mischief sprinkled liberally in them too. He sat next to the guy. "So were you the one shooting or the one who got shot? I'm here to take an account of what happened, as per usual. Of course, if I don't have to haul you off that would be preferable 'cause I was considerin' askin' you out to do something. Would be complicated to sneak a beer or dinner into a cell. Sooo much red tape for that one." The sly smile turned into a smirk. Samuel could be dense sometimes, but he could also be pretty direct at times. | Days spent in the hospital were, as it turned out, incredibly boring. While he was able to manage most of his business over the phone, and the terrible daytime television provided some distraction, Theron was restless to be up and moving again. He missed the excitement of a good run, and the in-person deals and negotiations. But at least his time stuck in bed was almost over. Today, he was to be released at long last. All he had to do was wait until the cops showed up to ask him about the incident that had put him there, throw them off the trail, and he’d be set.
He’d just finished getting dressed in a fresh set of civilian clothes (compliments of an employee who had stopped by to drop them off earlier) when a familiar voice spoke from behind him. Surprised, he turned to find a smirking Samuel standing behind him. Suddenly, the upcoming questioning had become a lot more interesting.
Flashing a grin, Theron plopped back down onto the hospital bed. “And here I thought you came because you missed me,” he replied, leaning back to settle his weight on his hands. “Ah well. Hello Samuel.”
As they launched right into the business side of things— sort of— he flashed a grin and answered, “Aw, c’mon. It’s only a problem if you get caught, yeah?” Chuckling, Theron shook his head. “Nah, I was the one getting shot. Was probably supposed to be a mugging or something, but the guys saw something and got spooked, I think. Took off soon after, luckily for me.” Dinner and drinks did sound nice, though. Maybe when this was over, he could see about taking Samuel up on his offer…

[attr="class","notafraid"] [attr="class","naimg"] [attr="class","naimgborder"] [attr="class","nalyrics"]Just feel the energy Just know who the ENEMY is [attr="class","nabody"]Came because he missed Theron? Samuel mentally waggled his eyebrows. He didn't actually do it, but damn there was a pretty good joke in that sentence of Theron's that he wouldn't actually vocalize. He kept listening to the guy. Only trouble if he got caught huh? Samuel arched an eyebrow. "Yeah it would've still counted as caught if I saw you. When I'm on the job, I'm on the job. Now if I found out about it while I was on a day off on the other hand...then it would be an entirely different case." He grinned. He heard the answer to his question of who was shot, and Samuel's eyes widened. "Well that's unfortunate." He wrote down the details in his notebook. "So they figured out you weren't worth the trouble of trifling with huh?" He grinned. The guy looked okay, so Samuel thought it was safe enough to make jokes. Theron was making some of them himself after all. "Well did you at least tell the doctor that you didn't need his help, that you already got your shots?" The cop snickered a bit. Theron was a buddy, and someone he was comfortable around. Some people might think he was acting differently from usual, but it really wasn't that odd. See the trouble with the guy was that he didn't venture out of his comfort zone that often. However, instead of being anxious about his lack of social skills and ability to recover out of his comfort zone, Samuel reacted to interactions differently. When he was pushed out of his comfort zone abruptly, he took it in stride. He was comfortable with himself, and he thought that probably helped a lot with it. Whereas some might get anxious at not knowing how a conversation could go down, he was more relaxed. He was confident that he could handle anything that was thrown at him. "Shot once or more? I assume the results of the bullet or whatever have already been sent to the station. That's generally how things go down with this I think. Although I haven't actually done a report on someone being shot. You're the first case of it my superiors have trusted me with." | Theron scoffed, rolling his eyes in a melodramatic fashion as Samuel shot down what he thought was a great idea. “So, what, you’d have had to turn yourself in? That it?” he asked, still grinning widely. “Well… what if you did turn up on an off day, then? Could bust me out, too, since you wouldn’t be working, yeah?” It was tempting to rib the man a little, or lean on him playfully, but here did not seem like the place. Later, maybe, if the two of them could afford not to run off on other errands after this discussion was over.
A sharp snort came at Samuel’s assessment of the incident. Unfortunate, huh? “That’s one way to put it,” he replied drily, trying not to smirk while he shot the other man a flat look. A small shrug followed soon after. “Something like that, I guess. “ Taking out one of the attackers had certainly helped in convincing them to lose interest, but since that particular casualty hadn’t been brought up yet, Theron didn’t feel the need to speak on it himself.
The next time the officer spoke, he did give him a light punch on the arm, trying desperately not to snicker along with him. “Well, I tried, but they were convinced I needed more,” Theron answered, trying and failing to keep a straight face. It had been a bad joke, at best, but it was kind of nice that the atmosphere was so unexpectedly relaxed, and good to know Samuel wasn’t all business, even on the job.
“Shot twice,” he confirmed with a nod, gesturing to his midsection. “Luckily they didn’t hit anything that couldn’t be patched up in time.”

[attr="class","notafraid"] [attr="class","naimg"] [attr="class","naimgborder"] [attr="class","nalyrics"]Just feel the energy Just know who the ENEMY is [attr="class","nabody"]Samuel chuckled. "If I was off the job, then I'd be more likely to turn a blind eye. Just because I'm a cop doesn't mean I'm a cop all the time. If someone was getting killed, I'd still step in of course. Most crimes I would. But I wouldn't go out of my way to. Some things are meant to happen. And others are meant to be stopped by my colleagues. Taking away all the work for them wouldn't be kind. That would lead to them being bored. Or worse, terribly lazy. Can't have that, can we?" Samuel smirked slightly at the thought. Then he heard the bit about breaking him out and he laughed. "Nope. That would go against my own code. I am a swordsman who's traditionally trained after all. My family code and the code of the cop are slightly different, and one of them was established in my mind years before the other." Samuel was all business sometimes though too. Theron was curiously bringing out his playful side though. "Yes and I hear there was a death in the muggers. It's a shame that happened, but it can be ruled self-defense quite easily. Especially since they were a registered offender and a member of a local gang. Also it is notoriously difficult to aim while being attacked by a few." He'd killed before, he knew mercenaries who did the same. "Besides, turns out he had a bounty on his head already. It was cashed in to help your medical bills. You might have noticed a decreased rate paid." It was something that could be done in a case like this. Only if the responsible cop was aware of the possible policy though. He tried to do it whenever he could. Something like a mercenary clause. He heard the joke returned and he grinned. Samuel knew that that joke had been terrible, but it meant something for someone to return it. He reveled in the feeling just a little bit. The policeman nodded at the luck that Theron had. "Yes, I'm glad you'll be okay." That was all he said, but in reality he was feeling very fortunate that one of the friends he had hadn't had their life ended. He had so few people he could count on after all. "Be careful. I don't mind looking into this, but I would rather not have to look into and report your death. I care about so few people, and I would rather not have to do that for one of them again." It wouldn't have been the first time unfortunately. The words were said fairly gruff though, to hide the true intentions and feelings. Because heaven forbid they know he cared. | “You,” Theron responded, punctuating the word with a gentle jab of his finger, “Are one weird cop, you know that?” Or maybe it was just the fact that he’d never had much casual interaction with the police before to know otherwise. Even so, it seemed odd to a lifelong criminal that an upstanding officer like the one sitting next to him would turn a blind eye to anything… unless of course he wasn’t so upstanding after all.
However, the noble swordsman’s talk of following codes quickly put an end to that idea. Theron couldn’t help making a bit of a face at that. “Good gods, man, how many codes do you have?” he asked with a chortle, elbowing him again. “With so many rules, it’s a wonder you can have any fun at all.” For all his teasing, though, he was kind of curious. A swordsman’s code was something he’d never heard of before. “So, what, you’re a samurai cop then?”
While the topic of their discussion shifted to the dead gang member, he kept his expression carefully reined in, so as not to give anything away while he spoke to it himself. “Yeah, must’ve gotten in a decent hit before they capped me.” The part about the bounty was news to him, but nothing especially surprising save for the fact that it had been awarded to him in a way. “Oh yeah?” He smirked. “Think I should get shot more often, then? Could probably make some pretty good bank off bounties…”
He was about to say more when Samuel caught him off guard with his next statement. “I care about so few people”… Theron blinked, staring dumbstruck for a few moments before he remembered himself. “Well, aren’t you sweet,” he replied eventually, giving a wink and a grin. “Good to know somebody’d give a damn if I bought it, anyway.” Of course, Samuel would be far from the only one, but it was nice to know he had one more person to add to his relatively small list.

[attr="class","notafraid"] [attr="class","naimg"] [attr="class","naimgborder"] [attr="class","nalyrics"]Just feel the energy Just know who the ENEMY is [attr="class","nabody"]Samuel chuckled as Theron pointed a finger at him, informing him he was a weird cop. He found it very amusing, especially since he wholeheartedly agreed. He wasn't the regular cop. "You wouldn't want to be around a 'regular cop'. The regular cop these days can be bought off if you have too much coin weighing down your pockets. That is a distasteful way to protect people. If you are going to spend your life protecting people, it shouldn't just be when you are paid appropriately to do so." He was a man with a code after all. He didn't know why people always expected something different. He heard the comment about his codes, and then not having fun and Samuel laughed. "You're assuming I follow all the codes I was taught." His eyes seemed to sparkle with mischief with those words. "I have plenty of fun. You already know that." Samuel smirked with that comment. Theron had seen Samuel having fun already. He nodded at the bit about the samurai cop. "I guess you could say that. My family is a family of blacksmiths and swordsmen and women. No seppuku though. Needlessly dying really doesn't serve any purpose. Our family figured that out a while ago." Seppuku was an old tradition. Something about gaining lost honour through death or something. His family had decided it was far better to live on in shame and try to get the honour back by the deeds one did. One life leaving the world did nothing any good. Life was valued above all in his family, which was part of the reason they gave for not supporting slavery. The slaves only had one life to live too, and it was everyone's duty to make sure the most people got to live their lives. Samuel chuckled at the joke about the bounties. "If you were planning to make bank, I'm sure it would serve your purposes better to register as an official bounty hunter. Plus, that way you don't have to get shot. Kind of works better, I find." He heard the comment about his words about basically missing Theron and he rubbed the back of his neck, tightening the elastic on his ponytail. "I am sure I am not the only one who would be at your funeral. Regardless, perhaps it would be better to not get shot so we do not have to find out the attendance." He was tired of writing eulogies, seeing arms cut off, giving bad news to mourning families. It was the one part of being a policeman that always managed to weigh on Samuel. His eyes betrayed a bit of the tired feeling he felt on remembering those times. And the time he had spent looking for his sister way back when. Fortunately that had ended well. He really should visit his family more often. The look in his eyes faded as he wondered to himself. He muttered to himself then, and it was almost inaudible. Samuel wasn't meaning for anyone to hear the morbid joke after all. "I suppose my family would save money on chapel expenses, not having to get a big one." It wasn't mournful or a depressing thought to him. Samuel even smiled slightly at the thought, chuckling a bit. It was just a fact of life to him. He really had no idea who would feel like attending his funeral. Perhaps he would come back as a ghost for a short time after he died, just to find out. | In the moments in which Samuel explained his definition of a “regular” cop, Theron quickly came to the conclusion that it was best not to say a word more on the matter. The people being described— the ones who took bribes and looked the other way— helped to make his business keep running smoothly. They were his assets, whereas to Sam they might as well have been outright enemies. So he just nodded along, offering only an “I guess so, yeah” at the end.
Thankfully, they moved on soon enough, and a slow, sly grin began to form on Theron’s features. Speaking of having fun… “Got time for a little more fun later?” he asked, raising a curious brow. After the way the first time had gone, a little more directness had seemed like a good idea. And while he wasn’t especially worried about the outcome either way, he did hope the answer would be something along the lines of “yes”.
Unfortunately, the levity of their conversation was beginning to slip, despite all intentions of doing otherwise. Frowning faintly to himself, Theron moved to rectify this. “I dunno, man. Registering sounds like too much paperwork for my taste.” Another nudge was aimed at Samuel’s arm. “I’ll figure something else out so neither of us have to deal with that or the funeral, how’s that sound?”
“Anyway…” They still had one more thing to finish up first. “Think we can get out of here, or did you still need to ask some more questions and stuff?”

[attr="class","notafraid"] [attr="class","naimg"] [attr="class","naimgborder"] [attr="class","nalyrics"]Just feel the energy Just know who the ENEMY is [attr="class","nabody"]Samuel registered the nod and the lack of an answer to crooked cops. Whelp the lack of an opinion did make Samuel a little suspicious. He wasn't a detective for nothing after all. And hey, he was technically on the job at the moment so he was still completely within his code. He heard the guy ask if he had time for fun later and Samuel smirked. "Didn't I already ask you out for drinks after this?" It was entirely possible that the guy was suggesting another...what did they call it? Booty call? Samuel still wasn't sure exactly what that meant. He knew it had to do with sex though. Anyways, he was pretty sure that's what Theron was suggesting when he said fun, but he was gonna play sort of like he didn't know. Of course the smirk on his face might give him away too. It really depended. He heard the words about too much paperwork and laughed. "Well you know, small price to pay to hunt killers legally and be paid for it." Bounty hunters were a part of the work done. Without them the police force would be likely overrun with criminals. Not enough cops to deal with the amount of criminals there would be. Some of his coworkers looked down on what they saw as trained, hired killers. Samuel had a sort of respect for them. He even had an informant who was one. He heard the questions about whether he was done and nodded. "I think I have all the information I need. Seems like it should be open and shut this time. Next time it might not be so neat though so make sure to try not to get shot again, alright?" He smiled, gesturing for Theron to go first. | Samuel did have a good point with the question he used as counter to his own, and Theron nodded in agreement. “You did already ask about drinks, yes.” As he spoke, a smirk slowly worked its way onto his features, pairing with an impish light in his eyes. “But I wasn’t talking about drinks.” While his general demeanor remained fairly confident, just for a moment he worried that he might be turned down before he caught the look on the officer’s face. It wasn’t a direct acceptance, sure, but it gave him at least a little hope for success.
Shrugging off the last bit about the bounty hunters, Theron pushed himself to his feet with a grunt. “I’ll figure something out.” A lopsided grin flashed Samuel’s way, and he started off, headed for the front door of the hospital once he was sure the other man was following. “And because you asked so nicely, I suppose I can see what I can do to avoid being shot. Sound good?”
Once the both of them were outside, he would pause, and turn to face Sam once more. “So, what’s the plan here?” Theron asked, head tilting slightly. While there had been suggestions of something like a date for the evening, thus far nothing especially solid seemed to have come up. “Are you still on the clock for now, or…?” Whatever the answer, he would resume walking shortly after, headed in the general direction of his apartment unless Samuel mentioned taking him elsewhere.

[attr="class","notafraid"] [attr="class","naimg"] [attr="class","naimgborder"] [attr="class","nalyrics"]Just feel the energy Just know who the ENEMY is [attr="class","nabody"]Samuel heard Theron mention that he hadn't been talking about drinks and Sam gave a light chuckle. He wasn't talking about drinks huh? Then he heard Theron say he'd see what he could do about not getting shot and Sam laughed. "Yes, well I believe that move will be beneficial for you as well. I've heard getting shot is hazardous to your health. Imagine that." Then Samuel heard Theron ask what the plans were, and whether Samuel was off the clock yet or not. "I'm actually still on duty for..." He took out his smartphone and pressed a button to see the screen, and therefore the time. Who needed a watch when everything you ever needed was on a portable phone? He seldom had to call anyone with this thing, but it was very handy. And he did so enjoy an occasional game of Jewel Crush. Matching the jewels to get a high score was somehow satisfying, despite the amount of 'haters' there were for the game. "Half an hour it seems. I keep mysteriously bumping into people when I'm about to go off the clock. I'm not sure if it's me, or the universe telling me to relax and stop being such a workaholic. Whichever way you go about it, it seems suspiciously convenient. But as for plans, I think drinks would be a good place to start. We've already had the...one night stand, as it were. We seem to be going a little backwards, but hey, I'll buy you a drink. My uncle introduced me to some of the best places to get quality alcohol. He thinks himself quite the connoisseur." Samuel smiled. Normally that would be the start of a cause of concern for a relative becoming an alcoholic, but his uncle was SO damn picky about what liquor he drank, the chances of him finding enough of it to drink in order to become an alcoholic was pretty slim. And would've needed a veritable fortune. And borrowing money from the main branch of the Ainsworth family. Neither of which were going to happen anytime soon. Drinking was Samuel's best way to get to know people, regardless of who they were. After a drink or two, he might even want another one night stand. Or he supposed it wouldn't be a one night stand if there were two of them. But he was not going to confuse himself too badly about that.
