He should be coming home shortly.
At least that had been what the text had said a while ago. Alex assumed that meant Daniel was thinking about leaving shortly after sending out the text. She understood that sometimes his work took him longer than usually, so the stated time of arrival was more of an estimation. It never bothered her too much.
Besides it meant she had more time to prepare dinner!
Tonight Alex had really ben in the mood for burgers, so her dad would have to be in the mood for it too. She got to work with gusto, taking over the kitchen as she usually did when it was time for meals to be prepared. No way was she ever letting Daniel handle making their food unless Alex was sick. Not after...the incident. May it never be explained and always make others wonder.
Preparing three patties (2 for Daniel, 1 for Alex), the redhead turned on some soft ambient music to play while she went about her business. She chopped off some tomato and onions after washing some leaves of salad. She also put some pieces of bacon out to cook in a pan on the stove. Frankly she was having way too much fun acting as chef at the moment. Not just because she got to prepare everything, but it all smelled fantastic. No wonder she wanted to be a cook (though she was never too sure how Daniel would feel about that, though she was already studying it at the university alongside her runes).
After slicing up some pieces of fruit to go as a side (gotta prevent that scurvy!), Alex was just starting to set out the food when she heard the door to the entrance open. Daniel must be home! A smile coming to her face, Alex turned her head back to preparing the table but called out to her father. "Dad~!" She sang out, hearing the also familiar jingle of a dog collar as Mogi, who'd been laying around the whole time Alex had been cooking, suddenly shot towards the entrance of the house. "Dinner's ready! Also Mogi's coming!" She warned as the dog came bounding over to him in a tiny brown blur.

“ The Righteous Side of Hell. The steady stream of lost children never seemed to cease in Felici. Orphans escaping from their temporary homes, foster children running away from home as an act of defiance; it was a never-ending cycle of children not wanting to be found. Sometimes the police found them before something terrible happened, sometimes they didn’t. More often than not, he would be called in by the family to assist in the search, and where the authorities often failed, he would most often succeed. Of course, he wasn’t perfect in his methods and there were times that the fates were simply against him.
Daniel thought of the recent effort to find young Johnathan, and his failure to do so before the boy died. He should’ve been faster, should’ve looked harder. He should have been better.
He banished the guilt from his thoughts with a shake of his head. There wasn’t any point in dwelling on it now, especially when the was nothing he could do to bring the boy back. Besides, today had been one of the days where he’d been fast enough. The eight-year-old that he found today was safely at home with his parents now; that was something to be proud of.
And now, he was returning home to his beloved daughter, a thought that brought a small smile to his lips. He pulled up to the side of the road outside of his townhouse and killed the engine to his motorcycle. Then, he dismounted and straightened his coat as he walked up the sidewalk leading to the stairs. He could already smell the food cooking inside. Lexie was already hard at work cooking a meal for the two of them and it made his mouth water and his stomach grumble in protest of food not teasing his lips. His smile broadened the moment he opened the door and he heard his daughter’s singsong voice reaching his ears. A jingle heralded the arrival of the excitable loaf of sugar and fur that Lexie like to call a dog and Daniel knelt as the family pet bounded up to him.
“Hey little buddy,” Daniel said as he scratched the dog behind the ears. “Ya been keepin’ an eye on the place for me?” He’d pat the small dog once more before standing and closing the door behind him.
“Smells great, Lexie. Can’t wait ta eat.”

The moment Daniel knelt to greet the little pup, she scrambled up and used his knee to gain some height and ruthlessly lick his face. Certainly someone was happy to see him.. Mogi quirked her head to the side as Daniel gave the spot behind her ears a loving scratch. Those little brown eyes stared up at Daniel as he talked with something nearly akin to understanding. Had the little loaf actually nodded? But before he could deduce much from it, the little canine gave his face another lick.
"Hope you're in the mood for burgers then!" Came his daughter's voice from the kitchen. Immediately Mogi's ears perked up and she swiveled towards the source. The brown loaf of dog became a blur once more as the canine raced back towards Alex. She laughed when tiny paws pressed up against the side of her leg, looking down to see the expectant pup. "Mogi! You already got food!" Still those little brown eyes stared up at her, tiny tail wagging and tongue lolling out.
Now that was a literal "puppy-dog-eyed" expression that Alex simply couldn't say no to.
Fully aware of her weakness for the tiny pup, Alex laughed and headed for the kitchen. She'd made a few extra strips of bacon if either of the Caim's had wanted more or if the dog begged for a piece. Choosing a good slice, Alex knelt down and let Mogi gently steal it. Despite her insane amount of energy, Mogi always managed to be gentle when taking things from either big human. Alex had done a pretty good job raising the little girl. During this time she glanced over at her father, a smile on her face.
"So? How did your day go today? How are you feeling?" Of course there was that hint of weariness that always seemed to cling to him. Alex never failed to notice it, and it frankly worried her. At the very least, he didn't look as worn down as some of the other nights he returned home.

“ The Righteous Side of Hell. Daniel couldn’t keep the grin from his face even if he tried as he let the little bundle of fur lick his face. He’d been skeptical about the pup when his daughter had wandered in one day and presented a wiggling mess of love and unbridled affection, but she’d proven that his decision to let her stay wasn’t one to regret. If anything, he loved the little corgi almost as much as he loved his daughter, which was saying quite a bit as far as he was concerned.
“Burgers, huh?” Daniel said. “Sounds like fun.” He followed Mogi into the kitchen just as she received her little treat and wrapped his daughter in a hug as she turned to offer him that beautiful smile of hers. All the weariness he felt was lessened to a degree by the simple act of holding her. He pulled away at length and held her at arm’s length. It never ceased to amaze him that he was forced to look up at the young woman, however slightly. He didn’t remember feeding her anything to make her grow like that. Then again, there was a very good reason for that.
He tried not to think about that particular incident.
“It wasn’t all bad. Managed ta find the kid and get ‘im home before somethin’ happened to ‘im.” He didn’t bother adding that he was tired because he was sure that Lexie had already figured that much out for herself. Instead, he took his two burgers and moved to the living room, setting his plate down on the coffee table.
“How ‘bout you two? Anythin’ interestin’ happen while I was gone?” He took the first bite and sighed as the ingredients melted in his mouth. Damn but Lexie could cook!

Know what was coming when her father stepped up to her. Alex gave Mogi one last fond pat before standing up to return Daniel's hug. She loved them; they were always warm and full of affection. "I'm glad you're home." She said during the hug, smiling at Daniel when they pulled away. Although she actually had to look down at him. Which likely wasn't a normal thing in a family. Yet Alex had never felt awkward about her height, thanks to her father and her friends. So instead of hunch over she stood tall and relaxed with fine posture.
Besides she actually did enjoy teasing her father over their height differences now and then.
She perked up when Daniel reported a successful day rather than a bad one. Sure he looked tired (as usual), but at least he didn't come home downtrodden like he would sometimes. She could always tell when he had a bad day. The redhead had gotten good at detecting those sorts of changes in her father. "Glad to hear it!" And she really was. While Daniel took his meal over to the living room, Alex took a minute or two to put some things away before joining him there. Her stomach was almost growling at the mere sight of the food, so like Daniel she took a bite pretty quickly and hummed happily.
"Not much. I went on a run with Mogi earlier; although it doesn't seem like I tired her out much." Alex said with a bit of a laugh once she'd swallowed. Actually that was likely Alex's fault; she kept the little canine in very good shape by taking the dog loaf with her on frequent runs. Mogi's endurance just kept climbing alongside hers. "School was good too. I'm really excited to learn more about runes. And cooking! I'm certainly putting the latter to good use." Speaking of; Alex took another bite from her burger with a happy expression. This was exactly what her stomach needed. "I'm glad I got to there. Thank you for helping me get in."

“ The Righteous Side of Hell. “Heh, no surprise there,” Daniel joked. “Mogi ain’t exactly a slouch when it comes ta runnin’ around, are ya girl?” He smiled at the corgi, a rare expression for him that few others had the privilege of knowing he was even capable of making. Only a few of his former students from his days mentoring the young wolves were aware he could do anything other than frown, and even fewer knew him to be capable of more than that. Alex and Mogi were among a select group that was ever on the receiving end of displays of affection on an almost daily basis.
“Good ta hear. It ain’t exactly cheap payin’ for classes at a ritzy place like that, so no slackin’, ya hear?” It was a playful jab at the most seeing as he had no real fear of that possibility. Lexie was sharp as a tack and a hard worker to boot.; even then, the exorbitant sum that he received each month as part of his deal with Kupiec each month would insure that Lexie could continue taking classes for as long as she liked.
He took another bite of his burger as his free hand rose to activate the television with a gesture. A hologram of some random weather report was projected into the middle of the room. He watched in long enough to gather that there was more snow (lovely…) to be expected sometime in the upcoming weeks. Then, he swiped the report away and moved on to the next program—a sitcom of some kind—that he promptly swiped away as well. He would keep swiping until he finally found something that either he or Alex spotted something that one of them would enjoy.

Alex giggled as the little corgi's ears perked up and she glanced at Daniel. She'd followed the two into the living room and lifted herself to sit next to the redhead. Though she laid her head on Alex's lap, she didn't make a grab for the tempting food right in front of her snout. It had taken a lot of training for Alex to get the little dog loaf to behave so well in front of food. And a looooooot of failed tests too. Alex fondly pet her on the head with a smile. "No, she's certainly no slouch at all." There was a hint of pride to Alex's voice before she took another bite.
Alex rolled her eyes but a smile played with her lips. "Okay dad, I promise: no slacking." Not that she'd planned on doing so anyways. She loved her time at the academy, whether it was doing her runic studies or her culinary ones. Daniel had nothing to fear from her performance at school.
They fell into a comfortable silence as Alex continued to eat and Daniel searched through the channels. See it was moments like these that Alex really enjoyed. Despite the fact neither was saying anything, Alex genuinely loved being in her father's company. He was usually busy at work, and her at school. So these evenings together were always a treat.
When Daniel passed by one channel, Alex's eyes went wide and she hurried gestured and swallowed the bite in her mouth. "Oh wait wait! Please go back!" She pleaded. She'd seen one of her favorite shows pass by: a particulr drama that followed the lives of a handful of couples living together. Despite the fact that Alex tried to avoid drama in real life like the plague, she had a strange addiction to these telenovelas even if some of them were horribly clichéd and predictable.
Everyone could have a guilty pleasure, right?

“ The Righteous Side of Hell. Daniel’s fingers stopped twitching at his daughter’s behest before flipping back through the two channels that he’d skipped previously. He arrived on a television network that generally broadcasted in version of High Ethean that he’d not studied in school. There were snatches of word that he caught here and there that told him enough to know that this was another one of the teledrama’s that Lexie liked for… some reason. While he couldn’t quite understand it (or anything that was being said beyond basic words for that matter), he still settled in to watch with his daughter; if this was what she wanted to watch, that was more than fine with him. He was just glad to finally have time to sit down and enjoy his daughter’s company for once.
“So… what’s goin’ on exactly?” Daniel asked. “I ain’t exactly an expert on this kinda thing…” Tracking down lost children? Sure. Slaughtering dozens of hapless gang members? Not a problem. Making deals with a dubious God and chasing around a dark version of yourself for the amusement of a bored Goddess? Difficult, but not impossible to do. Understanding a bunch of overdramatic bullshit in a language that you barely spoke? He didn’t even want to attempt wrapping his mind around that.
Whenever Alex launched into her explanation, Daniel would listen attentively at first, until his attention slowly drained away. He’d still offer the occasional nod or noncommittal “uh huh”, but it would be obvious enough that his thoughts were already starting to drift. The long day was finally catching up to him.

History won't Probably one of the goods things to come out of Alex's obsession over the telenovelas (other than an outlet for any desire for drama) was the fact she actually could speak the language rather fluently now. It helped that she needed to learn it if she wanted to know anything about what the hell was going on. And unlike her father, she'd been very much willing to sit through hours of the different dramas in order to understand nearly every word that came from the actors' lips.
Completely drawn into the drama, it took a second or two for Alex's eyes to follow her head in turning to her father when he asked a question. "Huh? Oh!" Her eyes lite up the moment her father asked. After taking another bite of her food (hey she was still hungry even if excited to explain). "Okay so basically this show follows the lives of these five different woman and their different martial crises. Antonia is the first woman you get to meet and her issue is that her job is taking up so much of her time so she feels alienated from her family. Her daughter ends up getting hit by a car because of this and Antonia ends up making her own company, but her husband also leaves her for a younger woman." Alex, clearly excited about the topic, doesn't yet notice that her father is, truthfully, not paying that much attention at this point. "Then we get introduced to the next couple, involving Paulina and Carlos. They're both trying to get the same promotion in their job. Carlos ends up getting it and they have this big argument about it where it makes them really distant from each other and talk about a divorce. but then Paulina hears about the company Antonia made and decides...."
Alex trailed off as she pulled her gaze away from the television long enough to look at her father. She could see that he was no longer paying any real attention. A small, amused smile came to her lips. She could identify when her father had conked out of a conversation. "...and decides that her father should probably get some rest." Alex finished instead, shaking her head and finishing the rest of her food. "Gods know you need it more than most." Patting Mogi on the head, Alex got up from the couch so she could put her plate in the dishwasher. "Especially if you're spacing out during an explanation!" Alex threw back in a playfully teasing tone.

[attr="class","drktags"]// 262 words // [attr="class","drktags"]// have a boop // [attr="class","drkcred"]// made by NOVA // | [attr="class","drkbody"]Daniels eyes were already starting to feel heavier and heavier when Alex finally noticed he wasn’t paying attention. His eyes flared to life with a “huh” as he became fully aware of his surroundings again. It took a moment for the hamster living in his head to turn its little wheel fast enough to process that his daughter was mothering him again. He smiled softly at the idea that she needed to do so, but he knew better than anyone just how stubborn he could be sometimes. He’d grown so used to obstinately ignoring his body’s need to sleep that it was almost second nature to him now; Lexie managed to change that with her persistence in making sure he took better care of himself.
He scratched his head and yawned expansively. “Give your old man a break, Lexie. Ya know I don’t think about that kinda thing.” Daniel shoved the last of his burger into his mouth before tearing off a small piece of second and offering it to Mogi. Then, he stood and followed Lexie’s example by placing the plate in the dishwasher. The burger was wrapped in a plastic and placed in the fridge for later eating; he couldn’t bear the thought of wasting something that his loving daughter had put effort into making.
Daniel took Alex into his embrace once more. “Try not ta late, alright. We don’t need both of use being dead tired.” He let her go and finally trundled of to his room to rest. He was likely going to have another long day tomorrow.

History won't Seeing the offering, Mogi's head immediately lifted from Alex's lap. Knowing what would happen the redhead lifted her arms while the little corgi scrambled over her legs to reach Daniel's offered piece of hamburger and devour it in a second. Alex shook her head, both at the dog and her father. "Then that's all the more reason you should listen to an explanation about it!" Alex shot back over her shoulder playfully. Realistically speaking though she never expected Daniel to enjoy something like this. I mean, it was Daniel. Getting him interested in the martial troubles of actors in a show speaking a language he didn't know was...probably impossible.
Alex spotted Daniel putting away the second hamburger and nodded in approval. Waste not, want not and all that. Besides, she usually made a habit of keeping leftovers so Daniel could pack them along to eat as lunch if he wanted for the next day. Saved both money and material. When Daniel came close, Alex instinctively opened her arms for the hug she knew was coming. It made her smile.
"Don't worry dad, I'll be done soon. You get yourself some rest, okay? I promise I won't stay up late." With that she let him go and gave him a kiss on the cheek before he headed off to bed. Once he was out of view, the worry slowly filtered into her features. Not particularly strong worry, like some nights might bring to her. The nights he came back exhausted and beaten. When he looked like he had a ten ton weight laying on his shoulders. No, tonight was definitely better but Alex couldn't help but be concerned.
With a silent sigh she returned to the coach. When a little dog loaf wiggled its way onto her lap to sit, that at least brought her expression back up somewhat. Smiling faintly, she leaned down to place a little kiss on the canine's head. Mogi always acted as a calming force for her. She wasn't quite sure how the little pup managed it. "Thank you, Mogi." Alex said quietly before she shifted with the little canine in her arms and laid down on the couch.
Comfortable and now once more put as ease, the two spent the rest of the night there until at one point Alex drifted off into sleep. At least she had her cuddly little buddy by her side.
