The chilled glass was just too tantalizing. A break from the posh atmosphere would be nice, no matter if it was just for a moment until her tattoo began burning once again because she was being called in that silent manner the Headmaster was so fond of. With her wine flute in one hand Em pushed the heavy door open to slip outside. The rush of chilled air was delightful. Not that it was overheating inside the ballroom but the cooler temp was nothing but luscious. A thoroughly pleased sigh escaped her painted lips as the door closed behind her. Any goosebumps were welcome as far as she was aware. They would act well to disguise those that formed from being so close to the one that held her invisible leash.
Her platform stilettos sounded with every step as she crossed the marble balcony. A small relieved laugh would alight the air as a powdery snowflake landed upon her lashes. Refreshing. Light. A moment in time absolved of stress. Brushing the crystallized delicacy away with a knuckle Em would eventually reach the detailed railing. The pale marble was relaxingly chilling to her fingertips.
As the wind set her blonde hair floating in gentle waves Emi closed her eyes. What a welcomed atmosphere. The snow would continue to flutter down, glimmering in the castle's festive lights. By the time Em rose her wine back to her lips there were a handful of the tiny flurries floating in the red alcoholic drink. Coming from an atmosphere filled with orchestral music the utter silence outside was, in a weird manner, serene. Indeed, nothing but the soft whisperings of the wind could be heard here. And she was looking forward to enjoying that silence for a while.

Notes OutfitHow nice to see you again | 'TIL DEATH DO US PART, AND IT DID “No, it’s fine,” Dullahan said into her radio earpiece. “No, we know. We can’t do anything about that. Tell her to stand down or I will throw her from the window. Yes, use those words. I’m stepping out so for the next ten minutes, report to Lorne or Caim.” She flipped the earpiece off. The room was still bustling with noise, but not hearing voices of security was a much-needed relief. She sighed and made her way towards the balcony doors. There shouldn’t be much chatter at all, but the young bloods were nervous as rabbits, reporting every little thing of zero consequence. Reigning them in was a hassle and she needed a break from everything before she suplexed a hunter through a dining table. Instantly she felt the relief of the cool outside air on her skin. She hadn’t realized how warm it was inside until now; no wonder she felt particularly irritated tonight. She door closed quietly behind her, and the din from the festivities became a muted murmur. She sighed and took lazy steps towards the railing. Were it not for the woman’s hair, she might have overlooked the other figure on the balcony. Her black dress blended against the night. Her dress shoes clacked with every step on the balcony. She would have left the woman be in silence, were it not for her… familiarity. As she got closer, she recognized her and scowled. The professor. Of course she would be here; the university types were always found whenever schmoozing was involved. She stepped to the railing, a good ten feet from where Emiko leaned. She kept her eye on the snow flurry as she spoke. “Inoue,” she stated. “Enjoying the evening? Also, I would ask you to refrain from cutting open any guests here who might be pregnant.” A simple statement that let her know she know what the professor did that night. Dullahan didn’t care to hold her hand and wait for a perfect moment to play ‘gotcha!’ No, she wanted the professor to know she knew. It might humble her. And she was feeling particularly irritable tonight, so what was one more confrontation? |

This perfect winter wonderland escape could not be interrupted as far as Emiko was concerned. Yes, the door opening and closing could be heard behind where she stood. It was impossible not to with the vast volume difference between the two's atmospheres. But it did not even so much as even slightly stir the woman. As another light breeze set further snow flurries to alight upon those blonde curls of hers, the professor tilted her chin further skyward.
And would sigh extensively.
Even as footsteps neared her the professor chose not to acknowledge the presence of the other. Her job indoors was to schmooze. Out here, unless someone approached her, she was staying the hell to herself for some semblance of a break. After all of the memorizing Em had to do for this night she couldn't look at a single dignitary and without recalling a long list of facts about them. At an event of this magnitude, it was headache inducing after a while. Breaks were allowed.
"Inoue."
Gods dammit. Em crafted that party smile of hers before fluttering those scarlet eyes over to the newcomer. "Yes?" Only to frown immediately after. A very very deep frown. One that didn't bother hiding her annoyance and dislike. The glare would maintain a short while in silence. Unmasked negativity bordering on hatred would be present during that time allotment. To speak so bluntly about University matters. "Well," Emiko would begin, dumping a metaphoric bucket of cold water onto herself to return her gaze outwards into the royal gardens, "aren't you cheeky tonight?"
"Your sense of humor sure is an odd one." The woman would comment offhandedly as she rose the glass flute to take another sip. Yeah, the professor had some dirt on the officer as well but there was no way Em was going to give any verbal adherence to those words. As far as Emiko was concerned the officer had a wire. "Security seems to have done well so far tonight though." The glass clinked lightly as it was set back down onto the marble railing. "I'm sure in no small part due to your efforts. You do tend to be very thorough in what you do."

Notes OutfitWriting a calm Dully is WEIRD | 'TIL DEATH DO US PART, AND IT DID Dullahan’s eye never drifted away from the snowy landscape out in the distance. She leaned on the railed, arms crossed, hands lazily dangling from the edge. She was eerily calm. She did not hate the professor; hate was an emotion she was incapable of feeling (except for one magi in particular), like love, and jealousy, and other such things. Sure, she could feel bouts of rage, but that was fleeting. She winced; not at the comments from the professor, but from a quick jolt of pain, like a headache that lasted only a few moments before fading away. Her mind was strangely busy, and… it felt like it was constantly fighting something lately. She told herself it was the stress of the evening, but it’s been happening since her meeting with the broker and her encounter with the Banshee. “I don’t joke,” she said. “I don’t care whether you own up to it or not, really. I can’t do anything against you and frankly, I don’t care to. I know what I saw. Dead magi are good magi, after all; far as I’m concerned, you’re doing Ethea a favor.” How long had it been since she stopped to watch snow falling? It seemed all she ever did was work, work, work… and that was fine for her until lately. She didn’t like it, the crawling thoughts, the constant feeling of struggle… it was new, and exhausting, and uncomfortable. “You don’t need to schmooze with me, Inoue,” she said. Her voice came as less of a harsh statement (as usual) and more… exhausted. “We both came out here to get away from that.” |

...... "Thank gods." Em admitted with a clear exhaling of expectations. Her physical stance instantly relaxed, posture finally being allowed to not retain the strictest of straight lines. Of course the professor's version of slumping wasn't as severe as another's would be, but the difference would still be noticeable. "Thank you." Emiko would say as her scarlet eyes fluttered closed once again with a tilting up of the chin to enjoy the fluttering flurries. The officer might find it odd to be thanked for such an oddity but to Emi it was an allowance to continue her break. Her presence wasn't one of negativity, it was of like-minded wishing for temporary stillness.
"No matter how many of these I attend," Em began as delicate snowflakes settled upon her lashes and cheeks, "I always need at least one break to get away and just ... breath." Inhaling deeply through her nose, the chilled air sent a refreshing wave washing over her features. The fact that Dullahan had stated such politically incorrect magi comments earlier it eased the professor's mind. The possibility there was a wire had lowered quite a bit with just that alone.
Without opening those scarlet eyes the young woman felt her fingers along the cold marble railing to find her glass of wine and raise it to her lips once again. The subtle floral taste of the rosé was quite lovely honestly. "You should joke more. I think you could pull off some lovely dry humor if you tried." Em would comment as she lowered her glass, her red lipstick leaving behind only the faintest of markings. Finally unveiling her gaze she smiled gently upon the royal gardens below. After a moment she'd glance sideways to the woman beside her. "If you're allowed to drink lightly while on duty you really should try the rosé."
Following, regardless of the response, Em would ponder on how to phrase her next words. "I also have pain medicine if you need something to get rid of a headache." The physical expression of pain hadn't gone unnoticed. She had been glaring at the officer at the time after all. "My field of study wasn't cybernetics so I don't know if that wince is something that can be assisted with. I ..." I don't know if you hosted brains can feel pain. Em decided against the ignorant racist statement and instead continued onto the point of her inquiry. "But I figured I'd offer ... Pain medicine and I are usually a strict pairing. Hardly without it."

Notes Outfittime for friendship bracelets | 'TIL DEATH DO US PART, AND IT DID The thanks was unexpected, and no more appreciated than silence to the cyborg. As long as Inoue wasn’t looking to fight, Dullahan was content. She didn’t have the energy after tonight, and it appeared that the professor was rather exhausted herself. Any other time, the woman’s soft reflections of the ball would have bounced off Dullahan, lost amid dead emotions and the inability to care. But now her words entered the swirling thoughts going on in her head. Another ingredient in the soup that threatened to drown her mind. “I see,” she said, simply. Her eye drifted to the cloudy night sky. The flakes made the night look as brilliant as if there were a billion stars overhead. “I would prefer to keep my radio off all night. But someone has to coordinate everything.” Small talk wasn’t her forte; she hardly made it, and was often too busy to care about it; everything used to be work, work, work- get things done efficiently, everything else be damned. If her file was ever made public, there’d be riots in the street for her head; the amount of violent infractions alone probably needed its own server. But the one benefit of lacking emotional capacity was the inability to feel awkward when conversation seemed forced or stilted. “I’ll leave the jokes to my partner; I don’t have the knack.” And Oliver was more than happy to talk enough for the both of them. Her eye rolled to the side, and she met the woman’s gaze for a moment before looking back out to the gardens. “I don’t drink. No point for me.” As if on cue, another stab of pain twisted her stoic face, brief as it was. She lifted the fingers of her hand in a lazy ‘pass’ gesture. “Doesn’t work for me, thank you,” she said. “Keep it handy, though. If I hear another young, excitable hunter crying wolf about some imagined danger, they’re going to need a lot of it when I find them.” She didn’t even blink when a snowflake hit her square in the eye- she couldn’t even feel it. Most of her body replicated humans perfectly, from the ability to taste, or to feel contact on her skin; she even had pseudofeatures, such as saliva, and skin which could warm slightly and even blush. On the outside, she was a complete woman, but even a perfect replication couldn’t fool her own mind. Subconsciously, her fingers tensed. She shifted, switching which arm was crossed over the other and changing which foot she stood on. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant to have her out here during her break. In fact, it made the professor seem human, rather than some stuck-up bitch with her nose in the air. She never thought she’d see the day where she was completely calm around the woman; perhaps she had judged her too harshly. She was a long way from trusting her, or any runic user, but not wanting to throw her from the ledge was good progress. |

Emiko didn't bother hiding her concerned frown. There it was, another wince. Especially for a sign of discomfort to come from this woman in particular was alarming. The officer was the kind Em could see rolling her eyes even with a sword stabbed through her. Never let the enemy see you struggle sort of person she reckoned. "If you say so." The professor responded to the pass. "Well, if you need a doctor to clean up an incompetent needy colleague, you know where to find me." Emi attempted a small grin to continue the light heartedness. "Somewhere in there," The young woman pointed with a casual thumb over her shoulder, "kissing the ass of someone I'm sure." A single hollow laugh would escape her lips as she redirected her gaze back to the gardens.
A time of silence would pass between the two if Dullahan had nothing to comment on. If she did, Em would reply single handedly something along the lines of a shrug and a "fundraising, the least glamorous part of the job". A gentle breeze would send more snowflakes trickling down, causing the woman's gown to sway in a truly picturesque manner. Another sip would be taken from her wine glass with a content outward sigh before a particular question occurred to her to ask.
"So ..." Emiko began, thinking a moment upon how to word her inquiry. The option for more political phrasings came to mind but she dismissed them with a small growing grin. She couldn't help it. "Any further luck catching the real terrorists?" The question wasn't meant to act as a full on stab. The atmosphere was too calm to purposefully kick the bull in between the horns. There was a genuine interest. It was just lightly dusted with amusement created from their last meeting. Light heartedness. That was all.
"I'm interested as a citizen, not just for the personal reason." The professor would add on in case the light heartedness wasn't caught onto. "Most news stations nowadays are filled with hopeful biases. I understand why but it's annoying when trying to get a fraction of truth out of them." Em would listen to whatever response came with a calm demeanor. The quietness of the outside balcony was not one to disrupt so rashly. The two had come out here for a reason. A break from such things.

Notes Outfitif Conversation was a skill she'd be at -III | 'TIL DEATH DO US PART, AND IT DID “Noted,” she said. Huh. This was sort of like talking with Oliver, in a way. She was beginning to figure out the basic social cues of the conversation. “Don’t be afraid to rough one up. Would quiet the rest, probably get you out of this place early.” She didn’t have anything else to add after that. Even if she was getting the hang of conversation with the professor, she was a long way from being familiar, and small talk wasn’t something she usually initiated. If Inoue was willing to enjoy the peace of the balcony and snow, then all the better by her. A breeze pushed her own hair, synthetic strands dancing in the air for a moment. The cold, and the silence; she enjoyed these things most of all… normally. The cool air was still pleasant, but the silence left a void filled by the whirling cacophony of thoughts, information, and questions. Her head tilted slightly when Emiko hummed the beginning of her next words. Perhaps the professor would be disappointed, but the stony-faced woman simply turned her head away to look at another area of the gardens. Nobody would be getting a rise from her out here. That energy was reserved for coordinating the mess inside. “We did,” she stated. “Details are classified, but the cell is defunct, either dead or scattered.” She paused. “You know, if you had been more willing to answer my questions, you would have been cleared sooner. It was suspicious.” And that was as close to an apology as Inoue would get, unless she pressed the matter. She risked a glance past the professor and into the glass door of the ballroom. Well, nothing was on fire, and business seemed to be going as usual. She could stay a bit longer. |

"Heh," Emi chuckled once. In all honesty she had been offering to bandage up anyone Dullahan had felt correct redecorate their face. But if the officer thought her capable of kicking a hunter's ass in these heels and dress, not only was she correct but it was nice she knew it was correct. "I'll keep that allowance in mind. Gods know I wouldn't mind leaving this place eary." Emiko admitted as another gust set her blonde curls waving in the wind as if a national flag. "Seems we're both experiencing one of our least favorite duties in our lines of work, hm? Easy to assume you wouldn't mind an early dismissal either."
It would be then that Emi's eyes focused not on the landscape in front of her but the lenses that allowed such a view to be clear. The one negative effect of such a pretty precipitation. The professor frowned lightly as she noticed the wet imperfections that rest upon her glasses, distorting her vision in certain areas. A soft sigh later the woman was pulling a small folded microfiber cloth from its neatly tucked home within her bustline. Those scarlet eyes watched on in a new blurred point of view as she began rubbing at the lenses delicately. Lords, she was blind.
"Of course." She'd say in understanding for the need of classified information as she continued wiping at her spectacles. Occasionally lifting them up into the holiday lights to inspect them momentarily before concluding there was still a smudge that demanded to be buffed out. "Good. I'm very glad to hear that." It would be the last sentence offered that Em would smile sadly at. "You know how it is," She began, still scrubbing at one lens in particular. Apparently she had accidentally landed a finger print upon the high-index material during her last once over with the cloth.
"I gave you what information I believed to be relevent. As packed as my schedule is -- was," Em pursed her lips as she continued to blindly continue scrubbing, "the idea of spending hours reciting details wasn't exactly something I was thrilled about. You know how ... "bosses" can be with their expectations." The wording was precise. She could never claim that of her Headmaster. Gods, no. Never. Such a criticism was not allowed. However, in the form of describing how "some bosses" could be, Em had learned through this manner she was free to vent sometimes. Raising her glasses up into the light to inspect them once again she finally smiled satisfactorily. Sliding them back onto her face Emi would reach for her wine glass as if to cheers herself in such an accomplishment.
--! The professor's arm jolted harshly as a sharp pain burst caused the woman to gasp, the wine glass slipping through the suddenly weakened grasp. The flute teetered from the marble balcony's railing and would fall much to Emiko's hissing dismay. "Oh gods!" Em looked over the railing to watch the glass shatter below. "Damn it. I'm so sorry." The arm that had been the victim to the Head Master's silent call continued to throb as the young woman stepped away from the railing. Looking over to the officer she bit through the pain and would give a small bow according to Ikigain tradition of apology. "I'm so sorry. I just, I remembered something and it surprised me." By the time Em rose her head there was a masked conciliatory smile. "I need to take care of that immediately so I really must go. But I enjoyed our talk." Glancing once more to the railing as her heels began walking backwards towards the door she allowed a frown, "Please tell whoever has to pick that up that I'm sorry."
With that the runic professor exited the balcony. It wouldn't be too difficult to watch at least to some degree through the glass walls as Emiko wound her way through the crowds. Allowing a brief bowing of the head to greet before excusing herself immediately afterwards. Eventually her journey filled with fake delight in seeing diplomats and masking the sharp pains that shot up her arm, slowly beginning to venture across her chest the longer it took her to reach where it was demanded of her to, would end with a bow to the older man. Her Headmaster. Only then would the pain cease and there she would listen to whatever her greater had required of her presence for. Behind on the balcony would be left the small microfiber cloth fluttering in the wind weakly upon the cool marble tile.

Notes OutfitDats a good ~Fin~ in my book | 'TIL DEATH DO US PART, AND IT DID “It would be welcome,” she said. She looked over at the motion in her peripheral, and saw that Inoue was cleaning her glasses. She looked on for only a moment before forcing her gaze out to the sky once more. Her instincts always made her lock on to movement, even in peaceful situations like this. Her brows furrowed at her hand-wave to their first meeting. “It’s my job to determine what’s relevant to a case, you know,” she said, her usual irritation now starting to surface in her voice. “If I let everyone I questioned determine what was relevant, there’d be many more criminals wandering the streets. It wasn’t meant to be thrilling to you, or me. It was necessary.” And still Dullahan had been the one to jump the gun, and was proven to be wrong at every junction. With that in mind, she let the topic go. There was no shame in doing a full investigation, but it would be a waste of time to dredge up an argument that was already resolved. She jolted into an alarmed half-crouching stance at the sudden movement; those damn reflexes again. Part programmed, part human brain, all awkward when there wasn’t actually any danger. Or, well, awkward for others; Dullahan always wanted to be prepared. She considered Inoue in silent curiosity, her eye following the gravity-bound glass briefly. Inoue made such a hasty exit that it left the agent dumbfounded. “Right…?” She said. She wasn’t in charge of keeping grounds, so she wouldn’t be telling anyone anything. “Good evening, then, Emiko.” She managed to say before the woman was gone. Dullahan stood in the snow for a moment before walking back to the railing, peering over to see what fate befell the glass. Alas, she couldn’t see, and it was hardly worth the night vision. She realized one of her hands was gripping something other than stone and snow on the railing, and she picked up the cloth, dangling it in front of her eyes. Hm. She tucked it in her pocket to give back to the professor the next time she saw her. As for her… well, she too should get back to the night. Hopefully nobody managed to cause a scene in her brief absence. |
