blood on my name THERE'S A RECKONING A COMING, IT BURNS BEYOND THE GRAVE Given Lilith's interest in finding this man, Archaleos had had a solid hunch that these two cared for each other quite a lot. And that was good; he could use that. It gave him a convenient way to grab Drew's attention and, lo and behold, a little silent threat to one of the pair's well being was all he needed to get some leverage over the situation. He would've been more likely to relish this turn of events if the room wasn't still filling with water at a steady pace. The magi's stare was met head on, steady and stubbornly glaring on Archaleos' part— frustrated as he was with just about every aspect of this situation —and the fury in Drew's eyes seemed to not phase him or, at least, didn't budge him from his stance. ...whether that was wise or not. The Hunter was simply buzzing with energy by this point, both angry at at his own weakness and the fact that he couldn't just take out the magi that was right in front of him as well as set on edge by the water pouring into the room, but he forced himself to channel those feelings into taking a death grip on his sword's handle (plus some unpleasant scowling) before he did anything rash. The key was most important here so Archaleos reasoned that it would be much more effective to "negotiate" things through rather than attempt to take it off Drew by force. Which was honestly not something that he was certain he could accomplish right now. He could lose, and he could die without even being awake for the end. ❝She's fine, for now.❞ Archaleos took the liberty of responding for Lilith since, after all, she wasn't exactly able to do it on her own at the moment. But his tone emerged as anything but reassuring, speaking each word with an icy bite that clearly betrayed his hostility. ❝And I will have to disagree with you there. We are enemies, magi, so don't patronize me— we both just hold the key to each other's freedom. ...literally.❞ A key around his neck, another clenched in his fist, and the third held by this stranger Archaleos had been tossed in here with. The water was creeping up to the uppermost portion of the Hunter's calves now and he fought the urge to shudder just as the room gave a particularly violent lurch, threatening to unbalance him. He was left, still standing, by the end of it but with a dizzying nausea tapping at his temples that silenced him for a long few moments as he took a deep breath. ❝I'm sure that you will want her freed, too,❞ Said almost in a grumble. Tch— of course he would have to deal with this nuisance before being allowed anywhere near the door. Stuck playing nice with a magi while this nightmare world tried to drown him. ❝Three locks on her bounds, three on the door, three keys. Throw me yours and I'll free her, then we can get out of this goddawful place.❞ 514 WORDS | | Nevyne @drew | | y u gotta be so rude arch |

I did warn you.
Drew's eyebrow lifted as he heard the stranger call him by his species. This kid had a sword, and had called him 'Magi.' Did that mean that he was a Hunter? Lord, they were getting younger all the time. Did they go recruiting in the high schools or something, or was this kid just a little more hostile than most, and that was what had drawn him into the hate organization? Now wasn't really the time to figure it all out. The real takeaway was that even if they ended up helping each other, Drew would have to watch his back around the guy. Most likely, he would have shot Drew on the spot if he could've gotten away with it, and Drew knew that that meant he could never drop his guard.
Bunching the key and its chain in his fist, he tossed it underhanded over to the kid. His hand was still raised in a gesture of peace, palm out, but he knew that most Hunters probably wouldn't have taken that as it was intended. Some Magi used magic with an outstretched palm. Unfortunately, Drew was a fire Magi, and he didn't have a lighter on him. This environment wasn't exactly ripe for setting something on fire anyway. He could feel the water creeping up his calves, adding to the mild shiver that was working its way up his back and along his shoulders.
The ground lurched under his feet, and he staggered a little but managed to stay standing, his eyes going to the door with the locks. He would cooperate with the asshole for now, because he had no choice, but as soon as Lilith was out of danger, he would have to revisit the situation. Kid or not, he would not tolerate someone threatening Lilith. There was something of the wolf peering out of his eyes when he returned them to the boy. For once, Drew and his wolf were in agreement on something. The boy had crossed a very dangerous line when he pointed his sword at Lilith's throat. He could only wonder if the kid knew it. He swallowed the growl that rose in his throat before trying to speak again.
"As you like," he said, his voice even and soft.
Drew was not the sort of fellow you'd want to declare as your enemy, but there was every chance that the boy would be learning that lesson soon enough. First things first, though. Getting out of the rising tide of water was the priority.

blood on my name THERE'S A RECKONING A COMING, IT BURNS BEYOND THE GRAVE
Archaleos never had been very quiet about his distaste for magi and he wasn't about to turn over a new leaf now, so the scornful tone he took (as if the Hunter was personally affronted by having to even hold a conversation with the man) was to be expected. Really, there would be a lot less talking involved if he had his way... and the circumstances were a bit better. Jeez, Archaleos was going to come out of this loathing water entirely; stupid dream world playing with his mind like a cat toy. The force of his growing ire towards the situation was cooled somewhat, though, when Drew obliged in tossing the key across the distance that separated them. It was well aimed enough that Archaleos didn't so much as have to shift his feet to grab the bit of metal out of the air, which left him with the whole trio in his grasp— two in his fist and the last still dangling around the teen's neck. He wasted no time in proceeding to grab at the last key and yanking through the chain and shifted his sword to his other hand (non-dominant and less comfortable, but practiced enough to be manageable) so that the blade's edge lay between Drew and Archaleos himself, no longer pointed towards Lilith. It just made him feel a bit better, honestly, since the Hunter doubted that Drew would try to rush him across this distance and any magic ran the risk of hitting Lilith, too. Yeah... just a precaution, since he sort of had to focus on getting these keys into their respective locks ASAP. He accomplished this rather quickly. The first, satisfying click saw one of the bonds on Lilith's wrists fall away but Archaleos found that the key wasn't budging free for the moment, probably stuck until he unlocked the other two. Annoying but, then again, what would be the point of needing three keys otherwise? One, two, three clicks— all the locks were undone and he successfully reclaimed the keys before sidestepping away from Lilith, towards the wooden door. ❝Stay here.❞ He said to the woman in a voice that was bordering a snap, audibly impatient and obviously unfriendly— at least now that he knew about her loyalties. Not that Archaleos even cared much about her or whatever shoddy choices she made at this point, because he had the keys and the door was right across the room. He was only trying to be careful as he moved, keeping both hostile eyes on Drew in particular, with measured steps that were heavily weighted by water. It was at his knees now and the room still swayed ominously. ❝The door next,❞ Was that an announcement to the room or was he just thinking out loud? Maybe both. Archaleos had absolutely no idea what to expect with unlocking this thing or how Drew and Lilith would react, but wouldn't it just be poetry to have the chance to close it up behind him and strand them here? Oh well, he didn't see himself having such luck. He gave an irritated sniff and drifted close enough to lay a hand on the door's dark wood. ❝If these keys will even open it... tch. Stay over there and we won't have any more issues.❞ There was no more hostage to give Archaleos leverage here and that could be worrisome, but he did still have the keys and, with the steadily rising water, no one had much time to pick a fight here. 588 WORDS | | Nevyne @drew

Careful, dearest. Careful.
As soon as Lilith was unlocked, Drew took a step closer and pulled her into his arms. He buried his face in her hair for a moment, reassuring himself with her familiar scent. There wasn't time for him to linger there, though. With the water still rising, and his heart racing in fear, he had to stay alert for the chance to escape. Even if the water was making him shiver all over, he was the only defense that Lilith would have if the boy decided to turn on them. Pulling away from Lilith, he took her hand in his and put himself between her and the Hunter boy. The command from him angered Drew, but he knew better than to show it beyond a flash of gold in his eyes that quickly faded.
Ignoring the directive, he pulled Lilith behind him and stopped about a dozen feet behind the Hunter boy, waiting for him to finish with the keys. If the kid took issue with it, there was very little to stop Drew from putting a sword through him, now that Lilith was safely behind him and out of the kid's reach. But he stayed his blade, knowing that there was little time for petty quarrels with the water up to his mid-calf. Still, he had to fight not to pull his sword from its place on his back. He knew that the boy would probably take that as a threat, and they didn't have the luxury of settling this yet.
"It's okay," he said to Lilith, glancing back at her with the mildest of turns of his head.
He kept his eyes on the boy, not daring to take his eyes off of him for even a second. A skilled opponent would only need a second of distraction to finish a fight, and he wasn't naive enough to believe that the boy wouldn't try something as soon as that door was open. His nerves felt like a live-wire, with the slowly rising water and the threat in front of him, but aside from the pounding pulse that a sharp eye would have seen in his neck, he gave no other visible sign of his agitation. In a place like this, it was second nature to try to disguise his weaknesses.

At least Lilith had decided to obey rather than do something to complicate matters. You know, more beyond the fact that the room was being steadily pumped full of water, swaying like a boat in a storm, and was currently occupied by two people who were still weighing the merits of killing each other. This situation did not need any more complications. Archaleos watched the pair with eyes narrowed to slits, not exactly sharing in the joy of the reunion, and when it became apparent that they would be keeping their distance he stole a glance back to the door. Three locks. Three keys. That hadn't changed since he'd last laid eyes on it and the Hunter adjusted his hold on the keys in preparation to start slotting them into locks. Said feat was a little difficult given the size of the items— plus the fact that Archaleos could only use one hand which was totally not shaking out of a combination of chill and nerves —still he managed to get the first one angled correctly until the splash of movement drew his attention. More like yanked it back over, actually. They hadn't gotten much closer, no, but Drew had definitely moved and that sure as hell didn't please the Hunter. Couldn't he just stay put? Archaleos was sorely tempted to make a sound like a hiss to express his irritation, however he settled for only glaring icily at the man and shoving the first key into the lock with more force than strictly necessary. Another grief he had with the situation was that he couldn't effectively get the door open and watch Drew at the same time. Which he really didn't like. Alright focus, focus; Archaleos simply had to carry on with opening this damn door and it would be over with. It was hardly another minute or two before he succeeded in getting the other keys put in place and turned and, in announcement of that success, a rough clunking sound emanated from the door itself. Did that mean it was unlocked? Only one way to tell. Unfortunately, there was no convenient handle to grip and pull the thing open but Archaleos found that he could get a decent hold on the unnerving, skull shaped padlock. ...he'd probably need both hands for this, though. Fuck. With an audibly frustrated exhale the Hunter slid his sword back into its sheathe at his hip. He then dug his fingers into the divots provided by carved eye sockets and cheek bones and, gripping as tightly as possible, leaned back to pull. His only hope was that his strength (now more than halved by the absence of robotic enhancements) would be enough to move the slab of wood— formidable looking enough on its own without the water level making things harder. 469 WORDS | | Nevyne @drew | | now the question is, is he stronk enough for this |

Welcome to your
The door, despite its massive stature, would open quite easily. So easily, in fact, that it might surprise the hunter given how much force he put behind it. Beyond the door, rain poured heavily and thunder clapped. A set of wooden stairs led upward, water trickling down them. The sound of creaking and waves crashing were prominent now.
At the top of the steps, against a background of rolling black clouds, stood a woman. She was pale, taller than even Drew, and dressed like an old-time buccaneer, complete with boots, buckles, and a long coat. She stood with a grin, looking down the stairs at the three figures with piercing blue eyes, her hands in her pockets. Atop her head was a creature, large and scarab-like, with a black carapace that glistened with moisture; He displayed rows of humanlike teeth the size of their heads, but otherwise sat motionless on the woman. On top of that thing’s head would be a pirate’s hat that was far too small for the creature.
“Ahoy there!” She called. “Oh, you’re all alive? How splendid! If you’d like to stay that way, come follow me; the ship’s taking on water and I don’t plan on going down with it.”
Despite the content of the message, she strolled off to the side as if it was a pleasant day. If the men would go up and follow her, they’d find themselves at sea, upon a wooden ship that look like it came straight out of the 1800’s. There was a thin crew; humans and magi, working as if nothing was wrong, though something was… off. They didn’t seem fully… corporeal. Their forms shimmered and the rain seemed to pass right through them. If anyone tried to talk to them, they would be ignored.
Nevyne would be standing on top of a lifeboat, off the side of the ship, ready to be lowered into the violent sea below. She stood in a captain morgan pose, with one foot on the edge of the ship and her hand holding onto the rope. Whether or not they would enter the lifeboat was up to them. Around them, waves crashed on the swaying, creaky ship, some cresting the edge and spilling water onto the deck.

Player 3 has entered the game.
Drew stepped out behind Arch, pausing at the entrance as he looked back and forth. Oh hell... Not another ship... He and Lilith had taken one across to Suraja, and it had been one of the most miserable traveling experiences of his life. There was no such thing as a dry place on a ship, especially a wooden one, and that meant a kind of constant discomfort that he didn't like subjecting himself to. Looking up, he lifted his lip in distaste, revealing a single pointed canine for a second. The dark meant that it was a bad storm, which meant even more water. He was already shivering from the cold and the wet, but the water just seemed to keep coming. His skin ached all over, as if he was being beaten by a bat covered in spikes. It was wearing on his strength and his energy, considering the way he couldn't stop shivering.
His attention was immediately drawn to the figure that approached, and he could only stare in amazement at the being that appeared in front of him. He hadn't seen a being this size since he'd been attacked by a tree spirit a while ago. But at least this one was fully sentient. He examined her for a heartbeat or two, trying to make sense of what his instincts were telling him. The wolf was nervous, and he'd never known the wolf to be afraid of anything. Her body language told him that she was in charge of what was going on, or in charge of the ship, at least. Her eyes told him that she was dangerous, as if the giant monster-looking thing on her head didn't do that. This was one to be careful around...
But she was right, the boat was going to go down. It was already unstable, and the rain was making matters worse. The ship was a death trap. Taking Lilith's hand in his own, he approached with caution, lowering his eyes instinctively. Only the wolf in his mind could understand how to acknowledge a dominant predator. Pride hadn't been a factor in his life at any point, considering the harsh discipline that he'd received as a child, if he hesitated to follow an order. Without a word, he got into the boat and sat directly behind Lilith, bracing himself on its sides. He kept his attention on the strange, enormous woman, but he didn't dare to try to meet her eyes. Hell, he was almost nervous to speak.
Seeing Lilith shiver, he pulled her back into his arms and began to softly hum a tune in her ear. It was one he had written for her, one of her favorites to hear. Over the sound of the ship, the rain, and the waves, it was barely audible, but with her close to his chest, it didn't really matter. As long as she heard it, that was what was important.

blood on my name THERE'S A RECKONING A COMING, IT BURNS BEYOND THE GRAVE
Wow, okay, he'd expected a hell of a lot more resistance than that. The door's sheer size contrasted sharply against its true weight (though maybe that was to be expected, given that this was all a dream) and Archaleos was at risk of falling back into the water when it swung back easily in response to his effort, at least until he stumbled and righted himself. He'd sorely misjudged that one. But as strange as that was, the Hunter was still breathlessly relieved to see the door part way for them to pass. Not that this world seemed to be finished with them just yet. Thunder clapped loud enough to have Archaleos' muscles seizing, nearly jumping out of his skin, and the Hunter was back to frowning darkly as he squinted through the rain to see up the staircase. The voice might have startled him all over again if he hadn't spotted the speaker before hand. Did she say ship? Oh, haha— funny. All the swaying and floodwaters made a bit more sense now, didn't they? The revelation did nothing to make Archaleos feel better about the situation (no he was not fond of boats) but he had enough sense not to grouch or complain. The woman; she was no dream figment, but he found himself doubting that she was human or magi, either. He only bristled slightly when Drew and Lilith brushed past to head up the stairs since, at this point, fulfilling his job as a Hunter was becoming less of a priority by the second. There was too much else to worry about. Such as the strangely tall woman's comment about the boat sinking, the reason for which Archaleos got a good glimpse of when he reached the top of the stairs. The rain whipped at his face as he crossed the deck and he darted his gaze about to take in this strange vessel, straight out of an old-timey pirate movie, with its ghostly crew. Things really did just get stranger and stranger. The sight of a lifeboat, which seemed to be their destination, bid him pause as he was faced with his own battle against instincts. Climb into a lifeboat with a dangerous magi and an ominous, intimidating woman? With the intention of being lowered into the stormy ocean? ...oh boy. Alright, breathe— one of Archaleos hands came up to pinch at the bridge of his nose as he did just that, loosing a rough exhale, before the teen grit his teeth and simply soldiered after the others. Because there was absolutely no other option here. The necessity didn't stop him from seating himself as far away from the boat's other occupants as possible, with the hostile aura of a wet, angry cat. ❝...who are you?❞ Since no one else was going to ask, Archaleos decided to be the one to direct the question at the woman and the eldritch creature she was wearing as a hat. Similarly to Drew, though, he didn't quite want to make eye contact. 504 WORDS | | Nevyne @drew | | who tf is this |

Welcome to your
As soon as all passengers were aboard, Nevyne whistled a sailor’s tune as she fiddled with the ropes, untying knots, and heaving ropes. The lifeboat dropped a few inches and then stopped within a second, jostling the passengers. She continued on as if nothing was wrong. Another few inches, stop. A foot, stop. Pause for a waves to crash against the boat and shaking it, coating all the occupants in a salty spray. She laughed at the young hunter’s question.
“I have many names, Archaleos Durant,” she would say, never removing her eyes from the ropes. Each sentence was punctuated with another gut-shaking drop and pause. “But you can call me Captain for the time being. You too, Drew Schultz. You know, I’m surprised you managed to keep yourselves from killing each other! You each have more self-control than I thought. Just when you think you understand a mortal, they surprise you!”
She hummed in thought at the ropes, the long moments of her silence punctuated by flashes of lightning and the rumble of thunder. Waves crashed along the bottom of the main ship, choppy and dark, clamoring like piranhas to consume them. With a smile of dozens of sharklike teeth, she turned to the men.
“I think it’s time we went ashore.”
With a fluid motion, she drew a saber from her sheath and cut through the rest of the ropes as if they were paper. The lifeboat plummeted down into the waters, and for a few moments, they would be caught in the roil, struggling to find direction and to fight against the waves. This sensation would last no longer than ten or fifteen seconds, before they would break through the water and find themselves… in the shallows of a beach, not twenty feed from the visible shore.
The beach was part of what seemed to be a singular island, with sparse trees and green growth near the center. The men would find themselves apart from each other, and note that they could stand in the water. In fact, it wasn’t any more than waist deep for even Archaleos. Lilith would be nowhere to be found, nor would either of the weapons carried by the men. The only other figure was the captain of the boat, lounging in a chair under a wide, black beach umbrella... wait, no, that was just the creature atop her head. She waved at them from the sandy, sunny shore. It was pleasantly warm and there were no clouds in the sky.
“Ahoy there!” She would call to the men. “Come on, haven’t you spent enough time in the water today?”

If you put a wolf through the spin cycle, do they come out fluffy?
Mortal? He wasn't sure if the woman had slipped with her tongue on purpose or not, but the casual way she said it was unnerving. She had called them "mortal." Did that mean that she wasn't mortal? Perhaps that was why the wolf in his head was so nervous, being close to her. She was a predator, a power... and he didn't know the first thing about what kind of being she was. He would have to keep his head down until he understood more. He'd done it many times before, but it had never failed to be the right move when a new threat reared its head. It was a survival instinct that few humans seemed to understand. It seemed his caution was well-justified when the woman smiled and revealed a row of sharp teeth.
When she pulled out a sabre, he tensed and pulled Lilith closer to himself, but the woman didn't attack as he'd half-way expected. She did something much worse. Slicing the ropes that kept the life raft attached to the ship, she sent the boat careening into the waves. He was suddenly engulfed in pain as he was completely submerged in water for the first time, and the sudden freezing cold against his skin in addition to the unexpected impact forced out his breath. Fighting the urge to breath in, he flailed to find Lilith in the chaos, but could find nothing. He was on the edge of panic, and he couldn't figure out what way was up. He had no air left...
Just when he was about to take a breath of the water, he found himself breaking through to the surface. Coughing violently as he crawled toward land, he waited until he was certain he could breathe again before looking up. On his hands and knees, shaking like he'd just been through a hurricane, he didn't quite look as intimidating as usual. Rather, he looked half-drowned, and he felt that way as well. His eyes were pale gold as he forced himself to sit up on the warm sand. He didn't have the energy to heat his skin up enough to evaporate the water, so he sat there in the sun instead, panting as he tried to catch his breath. It took him a second to come back to himself enough to wonder where Lilith was.
He looked back and forth as he stood, but he saw no trace of her. His heart, still racing, began to pick up again as he looked for her and found nothing. Sniffing the air, he couldn't even find a trace of her scent. Not even on himself. Had the water washed away the scent so thoroughly?
Turning his attention back to the woman who sat on the chair, he staggered toward her. If anyone had some answers, it was probably this immortal, whoever she was. He tried to stay at his feet, but he didn't have the strength, so he collapsed to his knees as close as he dared. As much as he wanted to flee from this being, whatever it was, the urge to find and protect Lilith was still stronger. The human was still here, but there was no trace of her. Were any of these people real, or had they all been figments of his imagination?
"Please..." he said between ragged breaths. "Where is she? Is she safe?"

blood on my name THERE'S A RECKONING A COMING, IT BURNS BEYOND THE GRAVE
Unsurprisingly, the answer he received did not clear things up very much. The response was enough to make Archaleos go quiet again (something in the way she spoke their names, with such certainty and familiarity) and he wore a tight lipped frown as the nameless woman spoke further. Tch. It wasn't as if he was celebrating the lack of violence, far from it actually. The Hunter would have been much happier if he had his enhancements back and the chance to introduce that magi to the business end of his sword— eek. Dear Gods in the heavens did this woman have any idea how to lower the lifeboat? Each stomach churning drop, lower and lower (closer and closer to the violent seas below), made Archaleos more certain that she either did not or was purposefully trying to make this descent as unpleasant as possible and his fingers were practically digging into the wood of the boat's side as he clung, pale with anxiety. He could feel the icy spray lapping high enough to get at them now and still the tiny craft was dropping in short, uneven plummets, not that this seemed to phase their "captain" in the slightest. When Archaleos managed a glance in her direction she was still humming away— cheerful in a way that was as out of place as folk dancing at a funeral —and he found his throat too tight to make any sort of comment on this. He just stared, all the way up until she drew the sword and cut the ropes clean through. The drop that followed was fairly short and, comparatively, far from the worst thing either him or Drew would experience in the next half a minute. Instinctive terror gripped at Archaleos' heart when he felt the boat hit the waves and immediately become engulfed by the snarling waters, ripping his grip away from the side entirely and casting his vision into all encompassing, petrifying darkness. Was that it? Were they all just to be thrown into the ocean to drown in the end? The young Hunter's thoughts were far from coherent in that short span of panicking, of drowning, but one did have to wonder these sorts of things. At least, up until the point where there was suddenly bright light above the surface and he could stand. It took Archaleos a good three tries to actually get on his feet— muscles still rigid with panic and the paralyzing cold that had now vanished from the water —but when he finally did he stood, shuddering and fighting for breath in the shallows. Another handful of seconds ticked by until the teen's wide eyes actually began to relay what they saw to his brain. Bright sunlight. Calm waters. An island a short distance away. No time for questions right now; he was just going to get himself on land as fast as physically possible. His motions were so single minded that he barely heard what the woman had called out to them (yeah he'd spent enough time in the water, enough for five lifetimes thank you very much) and Archaleos didn't lift his eyes to either of the island's other occupants until he had sat heavily onto the sand, knees drawn up towards his chest and still shivering hard. Waiting for the world to stop feeling like it was swaying. Drew's apparent distress was a bit of a distraction from his misery, though, and Archaleos watched the magi with a flat gaze, too shaken to really manage hostility right now. Lilith, right, where had she gone? 596 WORDS | | Nevyne @drew | | maybe just really wet and really unhappy |

Welcome to your
Still in Her buccaneer outfit, She grinned. Ah, mortals kneeling before Her was always an enjoyment, no matter how many countless centuries passed. Her chair was next to a tropical tree, and She hit it with the flat of Her fist. A several coconuts would fall from the tree, and Opgraven would catch one in His mighty teeth, crushing it like it was a grape.
“Coconut?” She offered, gesturing to the fruit on the ground. “Oh, Lilith? Presumably she’s doing fine in her own little dream. Or did you mean that illusion you were clinging onto this whole time? That was nothing more than a projection of your mind.”
She yawned and stretched, and the being atop Her head mimicked Her movements. The waves ebbed forward and held, and when She brought Her arms back in, they relaxed once more and resumed their normal ebb and flow.
“Well, I think that’s plenty for the both of you. You can relax now; the nightmare is over. You two have rather similar fears, you know; maybe you can get along sometime!” She closed Her eyes and folded Her hands over Her stomach, wiggling Her shoulders to adjust Her position in the chair. She chuckled, smooth as poured chocolate. “Maybe not. But you have entertained me, mortals. And for that, you shall receive a gift! I am a gracious host, after all.”
She rocked Her foot back and forth, as if a catchy tune was stuck in Her head. “Why don’t you tell me, Drew and Archaleos; if there was anyone’s dream you could view, who would it be? Anyone at all!”

The very audacity.
Drew lowered his head as he found out that Lilith had never been in any danger. He wasn't sure whether to be angry or relieved, so he settled for ambivalence. He would have to sort out how he felt about the deception some other time, when there wasn't an all-powerful immortal looking down at him. He slowly sat back on his heels, grateful for the sunlight that was taking some of the sting from the water droplets that ran down his skin. She was speaking as if it was over, and he was exceptionally grateful for it, knowing that he had escaped death for the time being.
So whose dream should he choose? There weren't a lot of people in the world that he cared to know that much about. He knew what Lilith dreamed about, and he didn't have the masochism to put himself through watching her suffer again. So who, then? Most of the people that he was curious about were already dead. If he could have walked in the dreams of either of his parents, it would have been a way of knowing them. Or even seeing Virgil again would have been ideal. But did the dead really dream? Perhaps it was best to try for someone alive. Then again... there was one being on the earth that he was still curious about, the one whose statue and likeness he'd seen over and over again.
He had questions to ask of her, questions that the confirmation of the existence of immortals were raising in his head. If Arithelia was real, then why were the Magi being systematically hunted and slaughtered? Where had she been in those years of torture? Did she know where the soul of his dead child was now? He looked up at the immortal in front of him, not sure how she would take the request. She seemed in a good mood, and he sorely hoped that his request wouldn't change that.
"Can I see Arithelia's dream?" he asked, his deep voice oddly steady for all of his trepidation.
The warmth of the sun was beginning to steady the shivers of his shoulders, and it helped his sense of calm considerably. If he was about to get some answers, the risk was definitely worth it.

blood on my name THERE'S A RECKONING A COMING, IT BURNS BEYOND THE GRAVE
So she'd been an illusion the entire time? Haha, how ironic. Archaleos blew out a heavy sigh and briefly lifted both hands— still flesh and blood, human hands —to rub at his temples in the effort to relieve exhaustion and panic induced headache that was tapping at the inside of his skull. It wasn't working much. The fact of the matter was that the Hunter was quite miserable right now: still soaked through, chilled to the bone, and currently getting covered with sand which all came together to make him a rather unhappy camper. The mention of this nightmare coming to a close was the best thing he'd heard all day. The mysterious woman's talk of their fears and, perish the thought, getting along prompted Archaleos to scowl wordlessly but he made no comment. He only opted to watch and listen. It didn't take a lot of difficult reasoning to assume that she had power over this place, beyond anything that a stranded mortal could comprehend, so he was reasonably cautious about doing anything that would make her want to extend their stay here. It was also preferable to just not draw her attention, at all. ❝View a dream?❞ The offer surprised him enough into echoing it aloud and the teen blinked, finding no ideas jumping to the forefront of his mind. ...did he want to look into anyone's dreams? It was a once in a lifetime sort of opportunity, this was clear, but Archaleos could think of no one whose head he would be interested in poking around in. Maybe his mother or father? To see what they truly thought... if they were happy with him. No— Archaleos rejected the idea with a vehemence that left no room for argument. He knew that they approved of his choices and to succumb to the urge to check on that made it seem like this dream had caused him to doubt; he would not give it that satisfaction. Who then? Drew's response tempted the Hunter into saying the same since locating the Goddess of Magic or simply getting some information on her would be a momentous accomplishment, but he was hesitant. Trespassing in the dreams of a goddess could end badly... and Archaleos really had had enough of interacting with immortals for the day. He doubted that he would obtain any valuable information from it, anyway. That left him back at the question of WHO. Who, if anyone, had dreams that would interest him enough to take up this offer? Archaleos was silent as his gaze wandered out over the softly breaking waves and the word 'no one' took shape on his tongue. At least, until a conspiratorial little voice whispered a name in the back of his head. ❝Caleb Durant—❞ The name was out of his mouth before he could think to stop it. That didn't stop Archaleos' jaw from snapping shut once he'd spoken, though, and he stiffened in outrage that was directed entirely at himself. Any dream in the world was his to peer into and that was the name that sprang to his mind. Even worse, he'd only narrowly stopped himself from continuing on to call him "my brother". Pathetic. The Hunter's fingers curled into fists where they lay on his lap but the name was already out of his mouth, he wasn't going to take it back. 561 WORDS | | Nevyne @drew | | get along?? when pigs fly |

Welcome to your
Nevyne’s eyes flashed orange. A goddess’s dream? She stared at Arithelia’s child, sizing him up. What was his goal? His motivation? Even Opgraven bristled and growled at the idea. How… interesting. A bold request, for certain. Slowly, Her eyes faded to blue once more, and She gave the other god a reassuring pat upon the head. She stood up from Her chair, towering above both of the waterlogged mortals. She laughed, too, at Archaleos. Of course he would say that; it was practically a given. She clapped Her hands together.
“Well! How interesting, both of you!” She turned to the magi with a saccharine smile, baring Her sharp teeth once more in an impossibly wide grin. “Drew, be a dear and spend some time here; I will be back for you before you know it.” She spun on Her heel and faced Archaleos. “Your brother, is it? Very well!”
She raised a hand and, between Her and the hunter, a rope shot from the sand and snaked towards the sky. She crouched down and in a swift motion, scooped the hunter up from where he sat, and slung him over Her shoulder like a sack of flour. This left him next to Opgraven’s legs, his head next to Opgraven’s maw. “Ah, He won’t bite. Well, unless He’s hungry! Let’s not waste time then, shall we?” With another slash of Her saber, below Her grip on the rope, the two of them were catapulted forward into the sky. Nevyne’s joyful laughter was the only thing Archaleos would be able to hear over the whipping winds.
After a minute, they would crash through a fluffy white cloud and into a new environment entirely. Archaleos would recognize it, perhaps slowly, given their aerial view, as the acreage behind one of his family’s vacation homes. A large, manicured backyard, backed against a treeline, and a small, private lake beyond that. Their journey upward stopped abruptly, and Nevyne set him down on the … strangely solid cloud.
“Enjoy the show, dear. And if you do, consider leaving some tokens of your gratitude at one of my shrines once you return to your realm… Otherwise I fear we may only have the budget for sinking ships in the future! Toodles!” She blew him a kiss as the rope took off upward. A hole opened up in the sky, and that really was the only way to explain it; it looked unnatural, as if someone had tore through the fabric of reality itself to make a wormhole into the great unknown… and Nevyne, laughing, rode the rope all the way through it, where it then closed behind Her.
The cloud would fly Archaleos downward, towards the lake. It was a much gentler ride than the rest of the dream had been. At the bank of the water, there were two young boys, the Durant children, walking on the rocky shore. A familiar time, back when the world felt different and responsibilities were nothing more than chores and schooling. Archaleos trailed behind Caleb, yelling for him to wait for him. The sun shone down brightly on this lazy day, the lake glimmering brightly.
Nothing much of interest happened, to any other observer. But perhaps it would feel foreign to Archaleos, to see a time before the falling out. Where they played and fought like siblings do, pretend-fighting with sticks and throwing rocks at birds (and, of course, each other). Slowly, a sense of déjà vu would creep up the hunter’s spine. He’s been here before… this was no crafted dream.
There would be a rumble… dark clouds would roll in from seemingly nowhere, flashing with lightning and bringing a downpour with them (Archaleos’s cloud kept him dry, fortunately). Yes… this was the day they were caught out in the storm; they had wandered too far, disoriented and lost. But now… Caleb was no longer a child in this vision. He was… an adult. He lead the crying child form of Archaleos around the woods, unable to find the right way out. He was starting to panic, but never let go of his brother. He tried to shield him from the rain, reassure him… but to no avail. Eventually, Archaleos tore his hand from Caleb’s, yelled that he never wanted to see him again, and ran off into the forest. Wait... but that wasn't how that day went...
Caleb didn’t waste a moment trying to find him, calling his name, running blindly through the forest… but they never did find one another again.
The dream lasted for what seemed like hours in total, and at the end, with a large bolt of lightning that struck a tree with a deafening boom and a blinding flash of brilliant orange, Archaleos would find himself jolting awake in his bed. Rain beat against the roof and the growling of thunderstorms was a persistent bass to nature’s song.
