[attr="class","tgg"] [attr="class","TheGreatGatsby"] Sanity It's just one side of the coin Sometimes it was necessary to keep up your skills in a less professional setting. Sometimes it was necessary to let off steam. For Helena and Hart that day, it was the latter. It was time to do some practicing yes, but it was a sparring to let off steam. You see, Helena had realized awhile ago that if she didn't periodically do this Hart would take over and the next thing they knew they had blood on their hands. Fortunately he had usually gone after regular bandits. People who were wanted for crimes. However, Helena knew that her twin brother didn't necessarily choose them according to whether they were criminals. He liked to see heads roll and he always had. There was a reason why the guy worshipped Phillip the god of madness after all. Helena knew ways to keep him in check to a certain extent. Fortunately it worked most of the time, but sometimes it just didn't and Helena was left doing damage control.
However today they were only beating up the practice dummies. Helena wasn't finding it too interesting despite herself though.
"This would be a lot more fun with someone to spar with."
"It would be even more fun if the dummies bled. Or screamed." Helena put a hand over her eyes when her brother spoke and sighed.
"If you want, we can blindfold ourselves and practice the basic movements and intuit what we're doing with the remaining senses. That's always more interesting right?"
"I still wish they would bleed. That would be satisfying."
"Hart, they don't. Get over it."
"We should protest."
"We are not protesting. The dummies are fine as is and that is that."
"Blood letting and torture is art. Art is expression. Art is important, and so is being a patron of the arts. Are you telling me not to be a patron of the arts Hel?"
"No brother. I'm telling you not to hurt people for now. Blood has to come from somewhere remember? And we don't have a contract to hunt down for now. So you're going to have to make do with this." With that she blindfolded herself and they then spun themselves around a few times to muddy their senses at first. Then they listened carefully. They memorized the scent of their sweat. The mustiness of the mats beneath their feet. They were scents they knew all too well from past practices and life in general. They reached out and touched the padding of the practice dummies. This was an exercise they had undertook even while their guardian Magnus was alive. They had continued it. It sharpened their senses and allowed them to be extra alert with all their senses. Their hope was then when they became a full fledged hunter for the goddess Kalidas that this practice would help them use the gifts of the hunter more efficiently. And if they never got the gifts, well then it would be even more helpful to them.
Then another scent reached Helena's nostrils, mixing with the other smells. It was not their sweat, but the sweat of another. There was someone else in the practice room they were in.
"And who might YOU be?" Their mouth curved into a sly sort of smirk. Maybe their sparring partner had arrived. Either way they were bound to make things more interesting. Helena put their glaive in its leather holder on their back. Other than a olive green sleeveless top and some navy blue basketball shorts, it was all they wore. They still looked the part of the guy, honestly. And they liked it that way for the most part. notes 589/open just no life threatening stuff [attr="class","mizocredits"]

as long as you remember me, i don't care if everyone else forgets. [attr="class","quicklinks"]484 words Sparring partner eh? Also who are you LOL | [attr="class","technoscroll"] ❝ Maia had been told to hit the gym. Kalidas had insisted she needed more strength, and more tone, her stomach was too flabby for the sensei, and if she was to be someone who was a predator and not prey, the Ikigaian teenager would need to shape up. The trouble was that the teenager hadn’t lifted a weight in months. At most, she had done cardio and her exercises for the bow. Not so much tonal training or strength training. Her mentor had also said that she had no experience in hand to hand combat. Which was more readily apparent when the mocha colored woman had flipped her on the ground onto her back with little to no effort on her part. Maia had the wind knocked out of her, and she had remembered it. So Maia had donned the red leggings, and a simple black sports bra before throwing on a hoodie. She wasn’t working out to make a fashion statement, she was doing it to prove a point to her sensei. She wouldn’t fail the woman, not after she had been so quick to get her ass handed to her before she could even pull her bow. Kalidas was right, she needed to be able to protect herself if a dangerous magi got too close. Besides, she liked the leggings, they didn’t show if her scars started bleeding. Walking into the practice room after the school period had ended Maia had started to head towards the practice rooms. Unfortunately, most of them seemed to be occupied by the other students, rather than full hunters. Most hunters tended to leave her alone, rather than bother her, as long as she was quiet. After asking her phone advice on workouts, she had come across one that seemed pretty easy and still challenging enough for her to work up a sweat. It looked like this one worked on abs and toning up. Good, that was what she needed. Entering into a room that seemed to have only one other person in it Maia would go off into the corner and start her stretching. She didn’t want to break anything, and she wanted to be prepared before she went at this full force. Pulling her hood up she offered up a quick prayer to the god; “Kalidas grant me endurance.” When Maia came to a decision she would follow through to the end. The Ikigaian teenager would turn as she heard an Ethean voice, her high ponytail whipping around her head and examining the person in front of her. She didn’t know why, but they looked familiar. In reply, she would just shrug at the person standing in front of her. She wasn’t much of a talkative sort and hadn’t planned on social interaction. “Working out.” The teenager’s answer would be simple, blunt, and pointedly sharp. She hated speaking in Ethean, it was the literal worst. |

[attr="class","tgg"] [attr="class","TheGreatGatsby"] Sanity It's just one side of the coin Hel was still blindfolded, but she heard the answer. She also picked up on the Ikigaian accent lilting their voice. Somehow the voice seemed familiar, but she couldn't quite place it. So they were working out huh?
"Are you naturally curt or is it just a bad day?" The words flowed from Helena in Ikigaian instead of Ethean. Ikigaian was such a graceful language and Helena used it whenever she possibly could. She hoped that would make the person she was talking a bit more relaxed. She smiled, sticking a knife in the dummy before reaching behind her head and taking off the blindfold. Hel looked at the dummy and grinned. Torso shot. In the shoulder, but still pretty good. She enjoyed being decent at what she did. She turned around, running a hand through her silver hair and regarding the girl in the same practice room. The person looked familiar. Helena walked closer and then she snapped her fingers in recognition.
"You're the girl who treated me to ramen! Good to see you again!" Magnus had always taught her to keep her head up and keep faces in her mind. A recognizable face made an easier target if they got in trouble or caused trouble. She had held the advice close despite what Magnus had done. So she was pretty good with faces if she did say so herself.
"So you're a hunter or something as well then? Have to say I didn't expect to see you again, never mind at headquarters." Hel grinned. It was a pleasant surprise. She was chatty though, and perhaps this person was not.
"Oh if I'm bothering you feel free to tell me. But if you feel like sparring it would be very welcome. Dummies can only carry anyone so far, y'know?" She shrugged, her sleeveless shirt shifting slightly on her broad shoulder. She reached up and adjusted it before putting the hand back on her hip. [attr="class","mizocredits"]

[attr="class","daiya"] Maia really was just minding her own business. Kalidas had told her to build strength, and that is what she would try and do in order to advance further and become an instrument for the guild. At the very least this meant that she would be able to protect humans much easier, rather than be worried about an earth magi throwing her into a boulder and it hurting. This core training would allow her to take much less damage in the long run. Plus it gave her an excuse to not be at home.
Maia would pause as she was stretching as Ikigaian came out of the other teenager. It was odd to have the words of her native come out in this accursed country. It would merit a glance from the foreign teenager, and a pause before answering the other teen in her native language, “This country merits being curt. None of you have any manners, and Kalidas forbid any of you to make an effort to advance your ai programs in order to auto-translate to cross the language barrier.” Okay maybe she was still miffed about that, well, that and the fact that her supposed father refused to learn her language at all. Maia had just stopped attempting to speak Ethean at this point unless it was absolutely necessary. Minimal communication was more than she needed with her father. All the time she was thinking about her father her face would be adorned with a scowl, her frustration simmering inside, and her general muscles tense.
It was only when the voice turned friendlier that Maia would turn again to see the teenager that had spoken in Ikigaian. Oh yes, she had looked familiar, that was certain. Maia would allow a slight smile to come up to face of hers as she tilted her head. “Ah yes, for the new year. How did you enjoy the meal?” She looked very different than when they had first met, but her same personality would shine through. “Did you enjoy visiting my country?” Sure they hadn’t been in an extremely populated area, but it was still an area with commerce and many people who celebrated the new year. “I hadn’t expected to see you past the night of celebration.” It was true they hadn’t seemed to be the sort for paths to pass again, and so soon.
Maia would tilt her head at the other teenager and give a slight nod, “A student at the academy. My father is a hunter.” She wasn’t sure how she felt about this person being a hunter, but it seemed that they knew somewhat what they were doing. “I’ve been on a few missions, and am slated to get a familiar next week, but I’m only ranked one star.” She still thought the ranking system was odd, but hey, she wasn’t here to hunt magi. She was here to protect humans. “Are you also a student?” There were many classes at the academy, so it would make sense if she hadn’t run into her yet.
When the conversation continued Maia would shrug, “It isn’t often I get the chance to speak Ikigaian, I don’t mind the chance to speak the language again.” At the next offer, Maia would tilt her head in thought, “I’m going to be honest, I know nothing about hand to hand combat. I prefer fighting from a distance, and alas, I am at a large disadvantage if I do not have my bow.” The teen would smile slightly at the thought of her momenta and instrument of protection. “I had thought to use this workout as a base for gaining core strength.” Maia held over her phone for the other teen to see the page she had up and bookmarked. She grinned, feeling much more comfortable with this person than any other she had met in Ethea. The teenager was a lot more talkative when she felt more comfortable, that much would be apparent to all who had interacted with her for even the briefest of moments. She raised her hand to her chin to ponder the thought. “I don’t see how it could hurt though,” She would smile before putting both of her hands on her hips with a grin. “If you would like, I would not mind.” Hel/Hart This is super late, but here it is! Maia is actually being sociable? the world is cruel. so change it with your own hands. |

[attr="class","tgg"] [attr="class","TheGreatGatsby"] Sanity It's just one side of the coin "Ah yes the autotranslate. Yeah that must suck. Probably an understatement on my part." She grinned. She heard the words about the ramen and nodded.
"Yeah it was really good. I really enjoyed visiting Ikigai. It's as gorgeous as I'd heard." The words were very genuine. The country had been a treat for Helena to see. She'd been glad she'd gone. Hel heard the answer about rank and such and the question and smiled.
"Yeah I'm a hunter student right now. One star, same as you. Although I honestly still don't understand the ranking at all. Came here. My...father was a hunter as well before he retired and moved to Wuld. Being a hunter could prove to be more interesting than mercenary work so I thought why not, right?" Helena's face had an easy smile on it, but it hadn't been so simple to say those words. She hadn't known her actual father. He had been a hunter though. That much she knew. Hel heard the girl's words about not speaking Ikigai as often and she shrugged.
"The man who raised me taught me Ikigaian, Ethean and Wuldian. I have to say though, Ikigai was always enjoyable to speak. It rolls off the tongue so nicely I can't help but look for opportunities to speak it." The girl seemed to have relaxed some, and Helena was glad for that. She interested Hel, and even Hart was curious. She heard the words about the sparring and shrugged.
"Well I don't know unarmed combat either. I've been practicing with my throwing knives and my glaive." She gestured to the weapon strapped to her back.
"Didn't strap on my guns today. You're an archer though? That's awesome. Archery's handy. Silent. Really helps to sneak up behind enemies 'cause they can't hear your weapon of choice. Never did pick it up though." Magnus had taught her many things, but archery hadn't been one of them. Only so much she could learn and do well at at a time after all. When the girl held up her phone, Helena leaned over to look at it.
"Looks like a good workout. I've done similar ones before and they worked. Core strengthening is definitely a good idea. And...honestly when I offered the spar I just sorta assumed you had a weapon with you. Like knives or something. I have an obsession with carrying my weapons with me. I guess sometimes I forget not everyone's as paranoid as I am." Helena chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck.
"But hey now that I think about it, if you're distance we could make a good team depending. I'm more of an up close person. Pistols, throwing knives, glaive. Haven't gone on a mission yet though, so I guess I'll see what that's like." Helena and Hart were both surprised at how much they were talking. Generally they were the quiet sort unless a question about performance was asked. They were relaxed though. It wasn't something that happened very often with them. notes: weird they're getting along XD 507 Maia Nomi[attr="class","mizocredits"]

[attr="class","daiya"]
Saying that what she said was an understatement would be well, an understatement. Maia hated that she couldn’t communicate effectively in this country. Granted she couldn’t really communicate effectively back home but she hat least had the option! Here she was useless, give or take the auto translate and how much trouble it got her into. There had been many a time where the stupid thing had picked up words that maybe weren’t the kindest and actually downright crass in Ikigaian the teenager had whispered under her breath. “Yes, it was.” The simple agreement would be echoed in a nod by Maia towards her fellow trainee and student.
Maia would actually smile at the fellow student’s words, “Yes, I miss my lavender fields very much.” That might not have been what the other person meant but that was how Maia took it. The Ikigaian flowed naturally with her, and she would continue “I hope to one day return, but Kalidas has brought me here, to this foreign land, as I am sure, is a test.” Maia would grin and tilt her head, “What brings you to Ethea? You seem to speak many languages.” At least, more than Maia did.
Maia would listen as the other teen explain their reasoning for being here. So it ran in the family, interesting. Maia supposed hunter families were fairly popular in Ethea; it was no surprise that Oliver had enrolled Maia in the Academy as well. It had saved him money and with her language barriers, it made sense. Not that Maia appreciated or wanted it. The only good thing about the academy was the zoo, the practice rooms, and the shooting ranges. She hadn’t found anything else that she liked yet, and didn’t expect to, “The rankings are odd yes, and I think all students who excel are given one star?” It was interesting to note, but Maia didn’t really care.
Maia would nod, and actually grin for once, “I never took to language class, I was much for suited for the Archery Range, or Physical Education.” She tilted her head in thought, “I really don’t relish learning Ethean either, not if I am to go back to Ikigai after graduation and turning eighteen.” She wished the time would come sooner but shrugged at the other teenager, “Though, there isn’t much there for me other than the Lavender Fields.” Was she actually opening up to this foreigner? Maybe. She was at the very least being much more polite, towards the Ethean. At the mention of the knives Maia’s eyes would narrow just a little before returning back to her original state, intent on the teenager as they would converse.
“I prefer range myself, given I’m well, a teenager and a girl. The odds are stacked against me on this one. The good thing is that I’m small and lithe, I can dodge… somewhat. The goal is to take down the target before they even know I’m here though. Preferably non-lethally, given that dangerous targets, more Magi than not lately, need to be held accountable in a court of law.” There was an actual chuckle from the girl, and a ‘pfft’ sound would come out at the end, “At least here at the Hunter Academy we aren’t punished for training and improving out hunting skills.” It wasn’t needed in Ikigai, and her home government was far too lean on magi. “Both seem to be good a skill to have, but my bow is my best skill.” She would nod at the mention of the close quarters combat and the medium ranged glaive.
As the girl looked at her workout she would nod in response, “My sensei told me I was too flabby and in order to take a hit I had to strengthen myself.” She grinned as she thought of her teacher, and the advice she had been given. “I’ve got the arms covered, its more my abs, and my legs.” Much of the graduating class was perfection in the physical form. Especially those who had been taught personally by her sensei. “We could always shadow spar? Give each other pointers? I normally have my bow on me, but given the intent I left it locked in my locker.” The girl would shrug and tilt her head, “It pays to be paranoid here.” Maia’s eyes would flash, thinking of the bullying she had received in her past schooling. It was always good to be cautious, especially around things that were different.
At the mention of the team Maia’s eyes would widen in surprise. Wait, this girl actually wanted to be her partner? What? That didn’t make any sense whatsoever, and she didn’t understand why. They had only just met and she had suggested it? What? Maia’s normally cold face would shift into a mouth slightly open surprised look, before she would catch herself. This was weird. No one wanted to be with her, and this random stranger second time meeting suggested teaming up. What in Kalidas name was going on? The Ikigaian teenager would narrow her eyes at the other teenager and bite her lip, thinking about the option. “I think I would need to see your skills before we could team up for a mission, we haven’t fought together yet in combat, so I don’t know your particular skillset. Though…” Maia would look the girl up and down and smirk. “I guess it depends on if you could protect me properly.” Was that a challenge? Yup.
Walking over to the cabinet in the corner she would beckon over the other teen as she opened it to reveal a stash of hunter standard weapons. She would take the bow from the cabinet and smirk as she motioned forward, indicating for the other teen to choose. “Pick one, and we’ll see how this goes.”
If the girl took up her offer, Maia would move towards the door and press a button the empty except for them practice room. “Kali activate student program TZ-Level 4” The Ethean would sound broken as she activated the school's training program, but it was something she had been working on. This particular program was one that ever since her trip to Camlorn Maia had been working on in order to better herself. Training against Holo-Zombies, level 4. It was the hardest level, but she wanted to see if her new potential friend could keep up. “I got your back if you can protect me.” Stretching her arm back, she would draw the string as a hollow arrow would appear notched if the teen agreed to the program.
Hel/Hart Okay so this is super late, but wanna hunt some virtual zombies with me? the world is cruel. so change it with your own hands. |

[attr="class","tgg"] [attr="class","TheGreatGatsby"] Sanity It's just one side of the coin Helena heard the words of the other girl, about how Kalidas must have brought her here as a test. A ghost of a smile made its way onto Hel's face.
"Perhaps. Perhaps she brought me here too, even if it was my own choice to pursue coming to Ethea. The gods work in ways most of us can't even imagine, I think." Perhaps even Magnus's death had been in their plan. She sighed, hoping that wasn't the case. Magnus would be happy serving a bigger purpose. Part of her wished for that for him, but Hart wished for the opposite. It was like her mind and heart were being pulled in two opposite directions, ripped apart by indecision and heartbreak.
"I speak all the languages because my guardian wanted badly for me to be able to communicate with many. To give me more options in situations. And hell, it's already come in handy right? I wouldn't be able to talk with you unhindered by autotranslate otherwise." Hel grinned slightly. Then she heard the statement about stars and she shrugged.
"I guess I'll find out when I graduate." She heard the words about going back to Ikigai and Hel's eyebrow raised.
"You plan on going back? I wouldn't think there would be a place for a hunter's skill set in Ikigai. Lovely country, but definitely more open to magi. I guess not every hunter hunts magi though I suppose." She shrugged. She noted that the Lavender Fields had been mentioned again.
"I don't think I've heard of the Lavender Fields. What are they?" Helena was naturally curious. Ask questions and only then you would be able to learn. One of the main things Magnus had taught her. Helena took in the words about being a teenager and a girl and she couldn't help but chuckle.
"Fair enough. I'm sort of in the same situation though. Woman's body after all." She counted herself as non-binary, but mostly because Hart resided in her head as well. Helena herself did identify as a woman. Hart identified as a man. So they compromised most of the time.
"Then again, I have been training since I was small so perhaps it's a different case. Probably I developed differently from the beginning." At the very least they developed differently mentally. She heard the words about the court of law and smiled.
"Everyone has two sides to them, magi included. Everyone has a good side, but they also have a dangerous side. In my opinion, hunters exist so that they have to answer for their violent actions. Everyone should have to answer for actions like that." Her guardian had been magi and had had two sides. Hel and Hart perfectly understood what their role was. They had been trained to be a well-oiled machine, capable of taking out enemies to the peace. She heard the challenge about being able to protect her and Helena grinned, even Hart feeling gleeful at it. There was nothing the siblings liked more than competition and challenges. There was a reason they trained with a blindfold on. To keep the challenge level up.
"Well we'll just have to see, won't we? That goes for yourself too. Need to know you'd be able to have my back against distance targets who might snipe me." She walked over to the cabinet and put her glaive there carefully, whispering to it.
"I will be back Magnus. Watch me." She picked up a regular glaive, testing it in her hands.
"My throwing knives are standard already. My glaive is the only thing not hunter standard, being augmented." Did she mean to tell the other girl that she already had an augmented weapon? No, not really. But once it was out, it felt right to have told this person. They were a possible future teammate. Best to keep things out in the open.
"I'm ready." Helena took a defensive stance, her glaive resting on her arm and her belt of throwing knives resting on her belt waiting for the first sign she would need them. The holo-zombies program began. I'LL LET YOU TAKE THE LEAD ON STARTING THIS PROGRAM? 682 Maia Nomi[attr="class","mizocredits"]
