Personality overall
Cracked mirrors for Hel and Hart symbolize the fact that they are two different people who see the same reflection, and the imperfections of that. Neither of them are particularly sane, but of the two Helena is more sane than Hart. One thing the two share is the nervous habit they have of moving some part of their body when they're suspicious. It could be a finger tapping. It could be a foot tapping. It could be shifting their feet, or cracking their knuckles. They could tilt their head back and forth. But if they're suspicious, there's something moving. They can both play guitar. Helena even has quite a nice singing voice, although the chances of hearing her singing is a bit dubious considering she's shy about it and also has to be in a particularly good mood.
Helena: Helena can be reasoned with most of the time. She can also be given orders and she'll be far more inclined to follow them than her brother Hart. Her temper can flare very easily, especially if someone tries to imply she is stupid. It is something she doesn't abide. If someone does do that, she might lash out. If she's in a good move, she will begin with an eye twitch and walking away. She also has a fear of Hart taking over and hurting someone seriously. That said, if she needs to relax you might find her whittling something, or toying with machinery. Need a watch fixed? Helena actually knows how to do that. She also enjoys listening to music of different languages to help her brush up on her knowledge.
Hart: Hart is very difficult to reason with considering his sanity is lower than Helena's own. Hart does not take orders well at all. When being given orders, Helena generally has to grab control of the body and hold it with every fiber of her mind so Hart doesn't lash out at the person giving the orders. He also has a terrible temper, but he doesn't bother to control it. That said, he doesn't necessarily get angry the same way. He might lash out, but it will be more of a pre-meditated action. He is also prone to try to test people around him for their 'strength'. He will do this in a generally underhanded way, like in the case of their room-mate Liam Garnette. But once he's tested someone, he very very rarely tests them again. For example, he now makes Liam breakfast. Helena isn't as good of a cook so generally she lets him take over to cook meals. He can do a few different styles, and it seems to relax him to be able to cook for people. He seems to also enjoy watching people enjoy it as he relinquishes body control as soon as it's cooked so that he can see how Helena likes the food. He also enjoys eating black liquorice. He manages to find the artisanal types. Helena hates it, and goes for red liquorice. But once in awhile, he sneaks one while he's in control and she can't do anything about it. It gives him a chuckle to make her react like she does.

[PTab=APPEARANCE]
look at the way we gotta hide what we're doin cuz what would they say
appearance
Hel has what she calls 'boyish good looks' and that's fairly accurate. She has no chest to speak of, and very little hip too. With her broad shoulders and boyish jawline, she could be mistaken as a guy fairly easily. She prefers it that way honestly. Hel has prematurely silver hair that can be a bit scruffy at times. Sometimes she keeps it shorter, other times it'll be loner. Sometimes she even uses extensions to make it longer. Her eyes can be pretty much any colour because she loves coloured contacts, but her natural colour is a sort of silvery grey. Hel is 5 feet and 10 inches.
Describing the way she moves is more complicated. Sometimes the way she moves and walks is undeniably feminine no matter what her body is like. Her hips will sway even though she doesn't really have any. Her eyelashes will flutter. And then other times the way she walks will be more masculine, more dominant. Her shoulders will be more squared too.
Her voice also differs according to what gender she is that day, and what person. Her feminine voice is a bit husky. Masculine voice is slightly deeper. Her voice is pretty androgynous either way though honestly.
They have a tattoo on one of their shoulder blades too, something they like but Helena didn't mean to get. Thanks a lot, Hart. Now we have a black tattoo of Ouroboros on our shoulder blade.
Fashion
Helena and Hart have very similar fashion sense. One of the only differences is that sometimes when Helena is feeling like a woman, she will don heels, or wedge heeled boots. They prefer dress shirts, boots, and either slacks or jeans. They also like shorts sometimes, but only if they have the luxury to look more casual that day. They also have a penchant for long coats with plenty of pockets, and men's ties. Sometimes Helena will slip in coloured contacts for good measure, or gloves. Hart also loves gloves, as he believes it will be more difficult for people to identify him from fingerprints that way.
It's also worth noting that most of the time they will have their revolvers in the sheaths on their belt, as well as a glaive pole weapon strapped to their back. They will never leave home without at least one of their weapons.

Siblings
Brother/Sister: Avery Elliots (half-sister, living in Fort Keyn, Wuld) - related through her father
Derek Muller (half-brother, living in Pate, Strun) - related through her father
Extended Family

Meh: Liam Garnett: A six foot five bulky guy who is Helena's room-mate and basically best friend. Oddly enough, he thinks of her the same way. She tried to kill him in his sleep once, but he's a light sleeper and stopped her. She respects him as a result and has never tried again, although he does have a lock on his door. Helena's checked though, and most of the time he doesn't use it.
Jackson Thomas: an adult friend who they met in Wuld and traveled with so they didn't look as suspicious as a teenage mercenary. He's a good guy, though quite morally ambiguous.
biography
Helena Anna Bautiste (Baw-teest) was born human, to two human parents, on March 11, 2576 in Dremyolok, Wuld. Those details are on her birth certificate, regardless of her memory. Her first four years were uneventful. Happy. There honestly isn't much to say about them. Her parents loved their little girl, and Hel had fun running here and there and making friends.
Like most childhoods, she doesn't remember much of it. She also only remembers bits and pieces of the event that ultimately shaped her life. Otherwise, she only has what she's been told. When she was five years old, two magi came to her town. They had a grudge against her parents. Helena didn't know at the time, but the truth is that her father was a retired hunter who killed the mentor of the magi. And so at the tender age of 5 years old, Helena lost her parents. She would've died too, but she had been hiding in a cupboard. Once he was gone, Helena came out. She nudged her parents. She cried when she realized. A man found her, sobbing to herself covered in their blood.
She remembers being covered in blood. She doesn't remember who killed her parents though. The man who found her had found her shortly after her parents died. He decided to adopt her when nobody stepped forward to take care of the newly orphaned girl. Many in the neighbourhood talked about him as a good Samaritan. What Helena didn't realize for quite a few years was that she DID have living family. None of them wanted to take her in and take care of her though. She still hasn't talked to them. And none of them have made the effort to meet her. They wanted nothing to do with the child who they thought was inhabited by a demon.
She had a year of adjusting to life with him, travelling the world. On her birthday, he gave her the gift of a dagger. Christmas followed with a set of throwing knives, among other more normal things like a teddy bear. He began teaching her how to properly throw knives, and melee techniques. He framed it like a game. She didn't have anything to compare it to, therefore it was a normal childhood for her. Another thing she was taught were languages. Her guardian Magnus knew Ikigaian, Wuldian, and Ethean. And he taught her them all as part of her training, stating that she would need to be able to understand many different clientele. Some days he would refuse to talk to her in anything but Ikigaian, some days were for Ethean, and some days were expanding on her first language Wuldian. During this time, she never noticed something out of place. She was just a little kid, and Magnus wore a hat.
When she was six, she learned she was being raised by a magi. Magnus had determined it had been enough time. And so she adapted to learning her guardian had lion ears.
All this time, she hid the fact she had someone else in her head talking to her. She whispered to him sometimes at night, but that was about it. She didn't want to look crazy. Then when she was tenand in Strun, her guardian gave her the diary her mother had kept. There, she learned that if they had had a boy, her parents would have named him Hart. And with that, they had a name for the brother of the two. He also told her he knew about the other person. The guardian had found references in his research of magi that referred to people who had two people in one body, a 'dual soul'. In other words, he believed her. It took time to get used to that, and the fact that around him she could talk to her brother. Hart.
When Helena was fifteen years old, she became determined to hunt down her parents' killers. He had been training her as a mercenary all that time after all. She thought she was ready. She confronted him. He had taught her to be direct with the people she didn't fear. He threw a diary at her. His. It had a bookmark on a page that she opened it to, and there were photos of her parents' deaths. It brought back every part of her trauma. What made it even worse though, was when her guardian informed her he had killed them.
She shattered, and Hart had the opportunity to take over. Helena didn't really believe Magnus could've done it, but then why would he have taken photos of the carnage? Hart had been taking over from Helena everytime their lessons became too harsh. The brother wanted nothing more than to protect Helena from the harsh realities of their life together. He listened to what his sister was saying in their shared mind, what she couldn't help but say while her heart was breaking. While she was losing her mind over what she had just learned. And then they both listened as Magnus told them to kill him. Hart didn't want to do it. Didn't want to shatter Helena further. He was fine with killing Magnus. Magnus had not been kind to them over the years. Helena didn't know though. Not until Hart mistakenly thought about what had been done to him, and it conveyed it to Helena. Helena's mind snapped. She withdrew into them, so far that Hart couldn't get her back. He killed Magnus. Read Magnus's diary.
Hart helped them function in society for a year. All throughout that year, he tried to bring her back. Let her see happy memories of their parents. When it didn't work, he started thinking about his own past. He started dwelling on things. He had plenty of things to dwell on. He got a tattoo, hoping such a change would bring her back. It didn't.
Helena came back when they were sixteen. Hart had tried to drown them. Helena, in the corner of the mind, realized she didn't want to die. She wrestled control from him, swam to shore. They count that as the start of their life together. They had known each other before then, but when that happened they were together in life. Helena has been careful not to leave Hart in control for long periods of time, but sometimes he sneaks out while she's asleep. When she knows he's having trouble with his sanity, she doesn't usually sleep very much. She read the diary herself to learn why Magnus had done what he had done. And she learned the truth. He hadn't killed their parents. Two of his own enemies had. Though he was also a magi, he had hunted them down for their crimes. The hunters hadn't caught the killers, so Magnus had been determined to use his knowledge to do it himself. He hated humans. He hated magi. Magnus had lived as a hermit for years and years. But when he saw a small child crying over the loss of her family, his heart had softened. He took them in, even though he heard the whispers of rumours the child had a 'demon'. He didn't believe in such things anyways. His harsh upbringing had been the only way he knew to raise a child. He himself had been raised like a warrior. It was all Magnus knew. So he trained the child as a mercenary. Taught her the basics of being a hunter that he learned all on his own from very questionable sources. Taught her that there were nasty people, magi human and otherwise, that killed and for that they deserved death. Finally, he explained why he lied that he killed their parents. He wanted to make sure they had the resolve to carry his teachings through. Magnus did not want to live any longer. He hated everyone, even those he had once called friends. And finally, he had killed innocents while he was in his youth. A bandit's family. Magnus had never been able to alleviate the guilt.
It all made sense. Helena realized, with the help of some words in his diary, that his death was to teach her the same thing he had learned at one point in his life: killing others came with a cost to yourself. For people who did terrible things, the cost was worth it. But the cost was never alleviated. Hart discounted the teaching immediately. He believed Magnus to be a terrible man. Helena was more understanding of the man who had raised them.
They traveled around Wuld, taking on mercenary contracts. All of their clients were always surprised to see a teenager show up. Eventually, they took on an adult who had known of their parents. They could trust him, and they traveled with him to look less suspicious. Their profits were shared, but Helena made plenty of gold. When they had enough, they traveled to Ethea. They were seventeen.
They had already trained a long time to hunt magi, and other killers. Helena had a lot to think about, and read Magnus's journal over and over. Helena would not forget his lessons, and she also realized being a hunter as well as a mercenary wouldn't just give a nod to the training he had given them, but also their parents. In addition, it would help them find magi targets who were terrible. They weren't stupid. They realized it would help them to have a decent hunter reputation. They had no great love for magi anyways. Helena decided to continue on the path laid out for her. She tried to reconcile the guardian she'd cared for with the crueler taskmaster Hart knew. And then she had to reconcile those beliefs with the fact Magnus had killed people, something that was undoubtedly wrong. It was difficult, but she eventually realized that while she was lucky to have the time she had with her guardian and father figure, his end had always been near. It had always been something that would've needed to be done. She still had Magnus's tail. The tail which Magnus had cut off himself when he realized his magi brethren were just as evil as humans. Magnus was a fire magi. They weren't able to part with the last part of their guardian, macabre as it was. They plan to have it made into an augmented weapon sooner or later.
They enrolled in the Hunter Academy, where they currently are.
With their upbringing you might wonder what they think about the different races. Hart will essentially try killing anyone to test their mettle. They're both about the thrill of the hunt, but Hart sees life as a way to test everyone else to see if they deserve to continue on. Helena tries to keep him in check and manages most of the time. Hart is more racist against magi than Helena is as a result of some of the things Magnus put him through. Helena has some of those memories shared, but they aren't personal for her like they are for Hart. Helena is of the mind that if someone did something wrong and killed another person, whether they are magi, cyborg or human, that they deserve punishment. If they killed more than one person, they definitely deserve to die in her mind. Race matters little to her. She thinks that most people have an ugly side of them that deserves punishment or death.
They are both religious and worship Kalidas the goddess of the hunt. But also of debauchery. They like to say they worship 'the hot one'. They also worship Tatara, god of death for fairly obvious reasons. Hart can also been seen smirking and thanking the god of madness on occasion, but it is not in reference to any madness of his own. He enjoys cutting down people who are mad, and therefore thanks Phillip for helping make them that way. They believe in Nevyne as well. Part of their belief of her is because sometimes they feel they are in a waking nightmare. But it's also because they have a belief that dreams might have something to do with the fact they are still together. To be clear, this is something they puzzled on their own. They have no way of knowing whether it is true or not, but it something they like to believe regardless. Kupiec...they believe he exists only because they've seen shady dealings. They do not worship him. Helena believes in Irilys god of knowledge because knowledge is a worthy pursuit in her mind. Hart doesn't agree with the idea of fated events because he likes to believe there is a little madness is every action. Oddly enough, they are hunters who believes in Arithelia as well. Spirits and nature are things they both know to exist. Magi also exist. They do not worship the goddess, but they are in general agreement that there has to be a god or goddess involved in all those subjects, so why not Arithelia.
It's also worth noting that they have figured out how to separate their thoughts and keep them private. They have also each figured out how to take control of the body, however for Hart to take over Helena has to either let him, or be vulnerable at the moment. Helena can take over while Hart is in control when he's losing his sanity, or when he's fighting. She is the dominant person in the body after all.
