A small clunk could be heard as within the halls of the hunter’s guild. The strange sound repeats in a slow rhythm as any passersby would notice an android struggling to walk. Umbrage or ‘Isabelle’ was regaining some sort of balance with her current body. The gap between each step was agonizing as she had not wanted to fall… normally she would be able to move without any trouble, but her original body had been nearly destroyed… the fact that her head case was able to sustain no severe damage was no less a miracle to her. She should had died… she did die and the promises that every mortal had of reincarnation and continued life was not offered to her. Only the abyss welcomed her… and the discontinuation of her existence was far more frightening than any foe she has faced. As she makes another step Isabelle let out a sigh of relief as she was almost to the courtyard. Her Gyroscope had not been fully implemented within her systems and she was having trouble retaining her balance throughout the walk. Not only that, but the skeleton she was using was far from complete as exposed wires and partial plating had off set what should be an android’s natural center of gravity. She had almost reached her favorite bench… now all that laid between her and a nice relaxing evening was nearly half a courtyard. “This won’t be too hard…” Isabelle told herself as she released her grip from the support she was using. Attempting to compensate for the lack of balance she takes heavy steps to the center of the court yard. Loud clanking thuds that had her joints scrape against one another. She bit her lip in frustration as she got closer as any of the onlookers either looked upon her in pity or in contempt and satisfaction from her weakened state. Each step was followed by a clunk of metal and pressure as her legs shifted the visible mechanisms followed in her movement. “Slowly… almost ther-” As she took her next step on some soft grass, the moment her foot landed the dirt shifted and caused her to lose her balance. Falling to the ground with a hard clanking thud before hearing a few passing snickers… A very strong part of her was filled with rage, but she her lacked any ability to achieve retribution for their attitude. She places her hand on the ground attempt to stand back up once more, but gives up all too quickly. Choosing instead to turn herself over and lie on her back instead of reaching her favorite spot. Starring up at the as she watches the clouds pass on by “.... I’m alright with this.” Lying to herself as she laid on the grass. Daniel Caim

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel’s return to the Guild had been a painful one. The hasty sling he’d rigged up to immobilize his arm had done more harm than good during his trek back to the small town he’d first embarked from. A doctor in the sleepy little town had told him he’d been lucky not to have pinched a few nerves. Daniel decided to take the woman’s word for it; the agonizing pain spiking from through his entire arm was evidence enough. It was far from the worst injury he’d suffered, but it hurt like hell none the less. He was going to be stuck on desk duty for a while.
All of that paled in comparison to the talking to his daughter gave him when he returned from the job with his arm wrapped in a sling. That normal motherly tick of hers went into overdrive when he walked through the door. He’d come home with a few cuts and scrapes before, but this was something completely new to the poor girl. His injuries were never this bad. Hell, she’d basically demanded that he stay home for a few days, and as much as he’d wanted to there was still work to be done. He still had one arm that was good for signing paperwork; rest could come when he was finally in the ground.
That said, he wasn’t opposed to the occasional break, so he did just that and decide on a stroll through the courtyard. The old wolf howled contently as the night air brushed against his face and allowed his thoughts to meander randomly from one subject to the next. He might’ve continued his absentminded stroll were it not for the strange sight of a body laying in the grass near a bench.
Daniel blinked once before he decided to investigate. He came to a stop a few steps shy of stepping on the prone figure and stared down; an android by the look of it. Odd.
“Any reason you’re on the ground there?” Daniel asked.

Isabelle laid there reaching up to her head to slide down her visor. As her hud activated showing her the limited options of entertainment she had to help pass the time. "Some music should make this experience far more bearable." Unlike humans she had the ability to have the music play without emitting any sound. One of the smaller benefits to know how to stimulate sound without emitting it. Granted technology hasn't reached the capability of using such a thing in combat. Looking up at the sky, Isabelle often made comparisons to the sky in Dagos, Felici, and the forests where she was tasked to hunt. It's the same sky... but it always looked so very different in each place. The many lights of the city outshining the faint stars that attempted to pierce the veil of smog each city had. Instinctively sighing as she realized she missed the sight of the stars. This was the second... no third time her body had been forced into a weakened state. However this time she was far more closer to death than she could ever recall. That abyss of nothingness that awaits every android... the gnawing thought at the back of her mind as she realized every passing day how envious she was of the mortals who took their psuedo-immortality for granted. The ability to continue on after death... and their gods would continue to support their self destructive habits so long as they gained the blind faith of their followers. Being dubbed the 'Holy Weapon' left a sour feeling within her. As if her only fate was to be a tool for someone else's needs. She takes another sigh, despite the fact she didn't need to breath... the exercise helped with stressful thoughts. Imitating the stress relief practices humans had actually worked for her too. Like a physical exercise of her smaller functions... As her voice box and chassis mimicked the physical expansion of breathing. It was only after her third breath she realized a sound notification. Someone was apparently speaking to her.... she plays the voice within her mind to assess and respond appropriately to the... disabled man. Odd. "Lost my balance...it's a bit troublesome trying to get back up if it means falling again... Could you help me get to that bench over there?" Isabelle points to one of the benches at the center of the courtyard. "My gyroscope is still malfunctioning... so I honestly can't quite assess the center of gravity that my body has." Isabelle stated as she reached her hand up to him as the other lifted her visor to reveal her face to get a better look at his features.... strange he seemed familiar. "Have we met before?" “ The Righteous Side of Hell." “Fun times,” Daniel said sarcastically. He offered his hand to the downed android and helped guide her to her feet. He barely heard the question as he grunted under the strain of pulling a hunk of metal, servos, and processors up. Now that she mentioned it, Daniel could recall seeing the android at some point, though the memory wouldn’t come to him immediately. He dealt with dozens of people throughout the day and faces tended to blur together over time.
Still, he searched his memory for anything that might’ve resembled the person he was assisting. Nothing in recent memory enlightened him. He couldn’t remember her from the riots, he could remember her from the spirit attacks, and he also couldn’t remember her from the holiday ball. The old wolf had to go even farther back in history before he even got an inkling of deja vu regarding this cyborg.
“I think so,” Daniel said. “Weren’t you one of the ones I was with when those zombies started tearing shit up?” That had to be it, right? He seemed to remember a pair of cyborgs that helped him and a group of civilians survive that day of horror and this one in particular matched the image his mind provided him almost perfectly. It also occurred to him that he may have seen a file on some sort of “holy weapon” in the Guild’s arsenal with a description matching the cyborg in front of him. Part of that was distressing to him.

Isabelle clutched onto him as she lifted herself up. She didn't lose her strength to carry herself, but the ability to keep herself from falling was where the fault lied. Lifting herself back up easily as she put more emphasis on her leaning against him so she could keep herself from falling. The man had a good body frame on him and it didn't seem like it would be easy to fall within his grasp. It took some heavy thinking on where she may have had seen this man before... Through her thoughts she kept her grip tight on his him. About to reach for his arm she stops her hand in it's tracks. Realizing what she's about to do and release herself half way to their destination. Struggling to balance herself as she stumbles to clutch onto a light pole. "Ha... got it!" There is a bit of a shrill in her voice... As soon as he brought up the zombies. It hit her hard on who he was. The instructing hunter from the meeting... and the stranger she saved back in Camlorn. "Oh... Lt. Dan... it's been a while!" She felt somewhat reassured by his presence despite clinging tightly to a light pole for balance. As she looked down from her pigeon toed stance and back to Daniel she felt even more shameful about her weakness at this moment. The fear of falling clinging to her as her hands pressed into the light pole. The distance to the bench wasn't far now she looked to the man a bit fearful to attempt making another step. "I... I think I can make it..." Her voice trembled as she looked on the path ahead. She was by no means confident in her ability to make it to the bench. However there was no way in hell that she would allow him to see her this weak. Just one step to start... starting it was the hardest part for all of this. As she began her hoof like foot found its balance then followed by another... her voice trembles as she speaks again attempting to keep with his pace holding her hands out to keep some sense of balance. "I... uh so what have you been up to as of late... and whats with the arm?" She asked attempting to divert any attention away form her. Daniel Caim

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel’s eye twitched at the use of that nickname. He hated being called “Lieutenant Dan” in any situation, regardless of connotation. “Old man” or “old wolf” were perfectly fine with him, but there was just something about that nickname that always irked him for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that it always seemed to come off as some kind of joke whenever people called him that. He couldn’t explain it if someone asked him, really.
“Daniel,” the old wolf corrected. “And yeah, I guess it has been.” It might’ve been a good thing too, because if memory served this android was borderline crazy. Running it the direction of a massive gas explosion seemed to be the antithesis of a smart decision and he remembered that Umbrage had done just that, even after their other companion had told them not to come back. He supposed that he shouldn’t be too hard on the girl seeing as it all worked out in the end and nobody in their group ended up dead.
He followed slightly behind Umbrage just in case she lost her balance again and would only stop when she came to a rest on the bench. “Well, I know it might be a little hard ta tell, but I got in a fight. Had ta go kill this ghost that was causin’ trouble in Forkadiin. Tough as hell, but I still managed even though I got gimped.” The memory of that fight made his heart race. It’d been the first time in a long while that he’d truly tested his skills to their limits. He lived for those kinds of battles.

After speaking the name 'LT. Dan', Isabelle noticed a bit of a twitch in his expression. Before long he quickly corrected her with his actual name. Not here either... now that really was a shame. "Alright then, Daniel..." She responded to his correction wanting to at least show him that she was acknowledging his words, rather than willfully ignoring them. Isabelle had a great amount of respect for the man. For him to survive this long without the aid of inhumane strength or speed was something she thought was admirable. In some sense those limitations as well as being conscious of them... seemed to be what kept him alive throughout his years as a hunter. So far she's only gone through one year and she's almost died more times than what should be considered normal. After finally reaching her favorite bench, Isabelle finally felt she was able to relax. Listening to the old man's explanation for his broken arm... gave her a bit of relief. That even an experienced veteran was prone to such difficulties as she had. "Sounds similar to my situation had to kill a hunter gone mad... which was far more scary than I thought it would had been." Her voice didn't show that air of confidence she had in class or the joking nature of saying Daniel's unwelcomed nickname. "I personally don't like fucking around with spirits or those deities that you mortals revere so much... The things you kind worships only remind me that I'm by definition not alive. Despite having a far more scary idea on what death for an android is like." As she said this she kept herself looking away from him... feeling as though she were to look into his eyes it would only admit to a weakness within herself she never wanted to acknowledge. Isabelle thought for a moment on what she said and turned back to Daniel. "I uh sorry... I'm not used to being a downer in front of others. OH! Right... uh can you call me Isabelle? I know I'm designated as Umbrage, but the name is starting to get old. Y'know just its just odd being called shadow rage, heh." Isabelle tried to play off her request like a joke, but ever since she's started the old stage name has stuck with her far more strongly that she would had liked. Despite her more sadistic tendencies on the job, it seems that's all people are willing to see of her. Would Culan or Kurai be disgusted by her behavior... heh Kurai most definitely. "Would you entertain an question of mine, but why are you and the rest of hunters so... so... well why are the hunters so infatuated with these gods? I mean... I fought someone who traded everything for power. However I'm not sure I understand the infatuation that with these deities. Kalidas is one I've heard stories about, but I've known and hard many things about how the deities consider beings such as me..." It was obvious these thoughts were heavily weighing on her mind, but she paid no attention to hiding how much all of this concerned her. Daniel Caim

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." A mad hunter? Daniel vaguely remembered a report crossing his desk regarding that. Akito Kobun had been one of the best in his day and that was before supposedly making a deal with the Mad God Himself. The fact that Umbrage had survived in the first place was impressive, but the way she succeeded left a great deal to be desired. An entire building reduced to rubble, several thousand in costs to repair the damage to her frame, the utter loss of one of the Guild’s most prized weapons, and that was before considering the public relations hit they almost took; it was enough to make Daniel’s head start throbbing.
The old wolf was almost happy for the distraction Umbrage offered with her statement, though he wished that it’d been about something else. He’d never cared about androids or even thought about what it meant when one was destroyed. Hell, as long as there was a backup copy of their software they couldn’t really die. They might be a different person at the end of it, but they’d still be alive in a way. In a way, they weren’t any different from humans.
Daniel was opening his mouth to answer when his phone chirped at him from his pocket. He fished it out into the open and checked his messages.
Hey Dad! I’m going to dinner with that nice girl I met at the beach. Want me to bring something back for you?
Nah, I’ll be good for tonight, Lexie. You just enjoy your date.
Daniel put his phone away. “Sorry ‘bout that,” he said. “It’s basically like this. Humans always look for something outside of themselves to follow and protect our souls. Plus, they give us gifts for our loyalty and prayers to help us serve them. And the gods don’t like androids like you because you don’t have souls, so you aren’t as useful to them.” Or at least that’s what the priests would say.

Isabelle pondered on his words... a simple exchange, prizes for the service and prayer of humans. It seemed rather too simple to explain the more zealot like personalities out there. "Seems a bit more simple than I expected, but it makes sense... I can't help, but feel envious of you Caim. No doubt of your existence or consciousness... Do you think it's possible for a machine like me to have a soul, like hypothetically... if I could bargain for one?" Isabelle had done some research on it whenever she had access to the web, but she never confessed this curiosity to anyone else before. So why now did she confess her concerns? Was it on a whim that she decided to just confess this. The android couldn't help but sigh as she spoke out before an answer could be given. "Don't answer that actually... just the musings of a bored machine. Although just out of my own curiosity which matters more to you here, the job or the family?" It did make her curious why did a retiree return to work in a job that would likely kill him Whichever answer was provided she found herself quite interested by just how far the conversation was going. Usually she would have scared off others or just have been ignored by whoever she would be talking to. Her eyes were lit up yellow as she listened intently before following up her question "Forgive me for being quite nosy, after your class I found it fruitful to develop some sort of social connection to the hunters I would work with. So since you've entertained my curiosity I can tell you why I work as well as answer any question you have for me... I came into this job for family, as odd as that may sound. The hunter's guild pays well and it serves to pay for the fees that me and my sister require for maintenance." Isabelle had wondered just what sort of life she would had if she chose a different path, but it wasn't a realistic idea to entertain for a machine built for combat. Daniel Caim

“ The Righteous Side of Hell." Daniel had to admit these musings Umbrage was admitting to were beginning to disturb him on some primal level. He wouldn’t have given it a second thought normally, but there was just something . . . wrong with the notion that a machine could have a soul in the same sense as a human. Plus, there were all those theories and bad sci-fi flick floating around about what happened when AIs started asking questions like the ones Umbrage was asking. Daniel wasn’t the type of man to put much stock in those sorts of things, but he found that it was a different situation to see it for himself.
To his credit, Daniel managed to keep any concern from showing on his face and in his body language. He opened his mouth to answer the question when Umbrage seemed to change her mind and instead followed with another question, one that was thankfully not as loaded as the last one. It was also much easier to answer.
“Family,” he said. His voice was devoid of any sense of hesitancy. Life with the Guild might’ve been dangerous, but it paid well. More than that, it was one of the things he knew best; fighting was etched into his soul and there was little more than that. At least that’s what he would have told someone if they asked.
There was another buzz in his pocket and he reached in to extract his phone. An alarm he’d set before coming outside was blaring at him to get back to work, earning a reluctant sigh. “Welp, I got a desk I need ta get back to, so I gotta cut this short. Try not ta get into any trouble, kid.” With that, Daniel began walking back to his office and the stack of unfinished paperwork. He made sure to take the “scenic route” one the way back.
