See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Ice cream shops were truly wonderful; Surai could easily agree with her kids on that. However getting all of them to stand in order as they were ordering was almost impossible. Even for Surai with an extra coworker to assist her. "Alright alright, Tori please- Noah! Don't you go eating Andy's- wait, wait everyone get in line; no cutting! You'll all get your ice cream!" Ah the joys of taking out her own little group to the ice cream parlor. Though Surai found their fuss a little more adorable than frustrating (though make no mistake she wanted these kids to get in line) to be honest. She was still smiling after all. Eventually through trial and tribulation and only one use of her more authoritative voice to get her kids to behave, everyone had ordered their ice cream and was heading to the counter to get them. Because it was such a big group they actually had to wait a while for everyone while Surai waited last in line to pay for everything. The kids who'd managed to get their treats already were being ushered off to sit in the booths or at the tables by her fellow co-worker, who was also doing a head count just to make sure. Since Toby, they were all even more strict on that then before. It was also partially the reason they had gone out to the ice cream parlor in the first place: bring something a little uplifting into the mix for the rest of the children at the orphanage. Finally it was Surai's turn to not only get her own ice cream but also pay for the group of kids before her. Her own choice had been pretty simple: mint chocolate chip in a bowl. However as she paid for the tasty treats, another ice cream was handed to her. one she was pretty sure didn't belong to any of her kids (she did a quick glance around and it seemed like everyone had their treat) but was, sure enough, on her bill. She'd gone and accidentally paid for someone else! Well that wasn't too bad, but now she had to find out just who that was. "Ah... Excuse me? Did someone order this?" She called out to some of the others in the ice cream shop while holding up the mystery purchase she'd made. If worst came to worst she'd eat it herself since she'd paid for it, but why not be nice and actually look for its original orderer? 418 WORDS FOR ANYONE ― Come on who doesn't like free ice cream?

[attr="class","de1"] Maia was in Camlorn for a class trip. The hunter academy had some stupid regulations about all students attending class trips. So thus Maia was in Camlorn. It was her first time in the town, but it was definitely a tourist town. The teen had spent the morning looking at the various shops that lined the main street of the tiny town. Most of them were overpriced and crap, but she had purchased a small bobble for the genetic parent. He had paid for this trip anyway, might as well get him a souvenir.
She smirked as she looked down at the keychain. It was a replica of knife, tiny and lethal all in one. Or at least it would be if it was actually made of metal. Which it wasn’t. She wouldn’t have been let back on the bus if it was. Then she would have to get back to Felici on her own. That would not be fun.
Just imagine the amount of Oliver’s money she would have to spend to do so. Chuckling she tilted her head. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea. No that wasn’t right. The frugal part of her wouldn’t allow her to. It would be such a waste of money. Maia couldn’t stand wasting money. It made her wonder why she had bought the stupid thing in the first place.
The trip thus far had been… interesting. The Ikigaian had mostly been left alone, and that had suited her. The teacher had said something about looking at the recent zombie attacks, but that didn’t really interest the Ikigaian, so she had well, snuck off. It wasn’t like there were many people paying attention to her. She wasn’t the only one either. The entire town was filled with students with this particular trip, and most of them had wandered off the given course. Not many hunter students took direction well apparently.
So Maia was in an ice cream shop that seemed filled to the brim with children.
She hadn’t planned to come here, but the sign outside had said they had mochi in here and it really was one of her favorites. She couldn’t resist it, especially when it was strawberry. The teen was excited, but her face only showed a cold calculating smile. She wouldn’t give the appearance of being a happy teenager, and if a few of the tiny tots looked at her she could come off as quite scary. She just had to wait now.
As she was approaching the counter to pay for her mochi the teen heard the voice of the woman who had been corralling the kids earlier, call out. When the person behind the counter confirmed that the mocha was the one that the woman was holding Maia slowly made her way over. “Mochi?” Would be the question that the teen would propose. If it was, Maia’s scowl would turn into a smirky smile and she would point to herself. “Mine. Thanks.” The teen would glance at one of the children that seemed to be huddling around the woman’s skirt and wave. She didn’t hate children. Only when they were noisy and these ones seemed quite content with their ice cream at the moment to be loud. “I’m Maia.” She looked around at the shop that was filled with children. "You have many."
The woman would see an Ikigaian teenager in front of her wearing the uniform of the hunter’s Academy in Felici. Her hair was down, with her two red ribbons and she would look a little, cold. This was just her general state of being. At the moment though, the woman would see a sort of hint of a smile, nothing too flashy of course, align on the girl’s lips.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Mochi?Surai turned towards the questioning voice to find its source. It was a girl. A rather...scowly kind of girl. One wearing a uniform Surai did not immediately recognize. Nonetheless, she'd correctly guessed the type of ice cream the woman was holding (a flavor she'd never tried before) so this must have been the one. With a smile Surai nodded. "Aha! Yes, here you go." With that she handed the frozen treat over to its rightful owner. "Sorry about that; it was a little hard keeping track of everyone's orders so I guess I accidentally mixed yours in with ours. No harm done though." Shrugging her shoulders, Surai wasn't really bothered. It was only one ice cream: it wasn't like she'd accidentally bought a new car. As Maia waved to the little girl standing close to Surai's side, the younger one shyly waved back and hid a little more behind her teacher. Surai's smile widened a bit. Well what do you know; maybe this stranger wasn't as scowly as she initially appeared to be. Though Surai figured that was probably because she thought her ice cream had been stolen. Hey Surai would've probably acted the same. Maia's question made Surai laugh. Looking around while taking a lick of her own ice cream (what? She didn't want it to melt!), she spoke. "That I do. Though they're not actually mine. Gods forbid." Heavens she'd have had to get pretty busy to have this many kids. Oi. "I work with one of the orphanages in town and we had wanted to take the kids out for a treat. It's not so bad: I've had bigger groups." Trips out to movie theaters were always the craziest. That or the pool. Now there was one question that was on her mind. "I'm not sure I recognize your uniform though. Can I ask what school you're from?" Now Surai wasn't going to claim she'd memorized every single uniform in Camlorn, but she could at least recognize a few. 334 WORDS FOR Maia Nomi ― Let's have the tiny kids swarm Maia for cuddles

Maia waited expectantly for an answer from the woman.
Hopefully, there would be an answer soon. It looked like her ice cream was melting. Frowning she looked at the woman, expectantly. Tilting her head Maia took the treat that was held out to her. Her frown turned into a more neutral facial expression and she nodded. “Thank you.” The thank you would be well intentioned towards the woman with many children. This woman spoke just a little too fast for Maia to keep track of, and the struggle of trying to understand was written on her face. “Pay you.” Maia held out one of the Ethean bills that she had been given as ‘spending money’. She still wasn’t sure on the currency exchange rate, but she was pretty sure the bill she was handing over to the woman would cover it. “Take money, yes?” Little did she know it was around 100.00 dollars’ worth, instead of the 10.00 one that she had intended on giving her.
She would wave to the tiny child that was hiding behind the woman’s skirts as she hid more. In response, Maia could only scowl. Of course, she appeared scary to children. That was just the way the world worked apparently. Turning to look up at the woman again she met her eyes, the Ikigaian’s own a little sad at the apparently failed interaction.
The Ikigaian teenager tilted her head as the woman laughed. Did she say something wrong? Was something she had said funny? Apparently there was something lost in translation for the girl and the woman. The conversation was not going to be simple was it. “Many children.” The teenager would nod at the woman, before she continued. Wait, orphanage? She knew that work. Her face got entirely sad and she looked down. “Sorry.” She understood the thought behind being an orphan. Wasn’t that what she practically was? The girl was someone who didn’t think she really had any family in the world. “Good treat, yes.” The teen would slowly eat a small spoonful of the mocha ice cream. Surprisingly it tasted authentic, and a small smile rose to her face. Yummy ice cream was certainly yummy.
Maia gave a small smile to the woman that to others might look a little cruel. “Uniform. School.” She thought for a moment then pointed to herself. “Felici.” The word felt foreign on her tongue, it was obviously butchered, but she shrugged. “Private school, field trip.” There, that should significantly explain things well enough to the woman. “Sorry, Ethean is… rough.” To be honest her Ethean skills were a little more than rough, one might even say they were elementary, but rough was the word she knew, so it was the word that she went with.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. As the conversation went on it became increasingly clear to Surai that Ethean didn't seem like this girl's native language. Or a language she was absolutely fluent in yet either. She had that hesitating, slightly frustrated yet also confused look to her features that Surai occasionally saw on her students or kids. Namely when they weren't understanding most or anything of what she said. So the woman did start to slow down a little. Though she completely stopped when she was offered a $100 bill. Eyes going wide, Surai blinked for a moment before shaking her head. "Oh! No, please, it's alright." She insisted kindly. "It hardly cost a thing; no need to pay me back." The fact the girl was even offering to pay was...nice to see to be honest. And it made Surai more inclined to forget about the accidental extra purpose. "Besides that is far too much to pay me back with." Hey if this ever happened again, she could at least make sure the girl knew this was not nearly close to the amount the ice cream cost. Good Gods Surai would have been robbing her blind basically. You know as the interaction went on Surai noticed that... she was right not to judge a book by its cover (ha). The girl actually seemed pretty ok. Well, at least judging by the way she was reacting to what Surai was saying and the little girl by her side was behaving. For that reason Surai gently encouraged the girl to come out of hiding behind her as they talked. She was shy, not scared, though the young woman might not be able to tell the difference. She did, however, seem to understand and sympathize with the fact these kids were orphans. Surai didn't miss that. "Yes after the... well, incident," It wasn't a topic she enjoyed bringing up around the kids, "Our beds got a little fuller." A lot fuller, unfortunately. Okay so now that smile was a bit unnerving. Or at least it would be but, well, Surai had seen others far scarier than this girl. She smiled back, though hers was warmer in comparison. "I can understand that; Ethean isn't my first language either." The Surajan woman confessed with a shrug. After taking another lick from her ice cream, she scrutinized the younger girl for a moment. "Are you from... Ikigai?" She reminded her a little of her sister's husband. Similar-ish features and all that. Plus the accent sounded roughly the same, though she was trying to speak Ethean and not Surajan. 399 WORDS FOR Maia Nomi ― Thank you for being patient!

Maia raised an eyebrow as the woman told her no. Was she wrong? She should pay for her own food that was right, right? Or at least that is what her grandfather had taught her. It was important to pay off her debts. Especially when they were food related. The woman was more than nice, and Maia didn’t want to be indebted to her. That much was certain by the frown that was on the grumpy teenager’s face. “Take the money. Pay back.” She would be adamant about this. Besides, it would buy the kids more ice cream, right? Oh! The woman needed more. Taking out the small wallet that she had been given Maia took out another of the same bill. “This enough?” She looked on genuinely confused. She didn’t have much more in her wallet to give. Hopefully, this would cover it.
Tilting her head Maia avoided looking at the tiny hiding child. She didn’t want to scare her further. Instead, she would lock eyes with the woman, keeping her conversation to a minimum. Tilting her head she listened to the woman. “Incident?” Maia didn’t really understand what was being referred to here. She wasn’t quite sure what the woman was talking about and thought. “What incident?” Was there something that had happened that she wasn’t informed about? She had only come to this country recently, and to be honest, she didn’t really care that much. Only when the comment about the beds becoming fuller she would glance back to the child and nod. “I’m sorry.” The voice would be low and soft. Just about as soft as Maia could get. She understood losing those who loved and cared about you.
Maia would take a bite of her ice cream before nodding at the woman. “Hard language.” The vowels and constantans all sort of flowed together in a very airy pattern that differed from the harsher sounds of the Ikigaian language. Plus it really had so many connotations to it that the girl had somewhat given up hope of even trying to understand the language. At the question, Maia would nod towards the elder woman. “Yes, born in.” She would take another lick of her ice cream. “Moved recently.” She would tilt her head in thought. “Maybe two weeks ago?” Hey did she form a full sentence? Good for her! Giving a slight grin the normally grumpy teenager would give a smile towards the woman. “New to Felici.” Hopefully, that would explain the situation a little.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Ack, wait! This was the exact opposite of what Surai was trying to get across! Instead of offering less money (or better yet no money at all), the girl ended up pulling out even more cash to try repaying the older woman. Surai's eyes widened further. The girl was so adamant about her taking the money from her. But it was way, way too much! This was basically a robbery, only Surai didn't want any of the money in the first place! Still the girl seemed insistent upon it for some reason. Gods how was she going to... aha! Surai reached into her purse with her free hand and pulled out the right amount of money for the cone of ice cream. She then displayed it towards Maia. "This is how much the ice cream was." Surai explained. Then she pointed towards the money Maia was offering. "That is far more than what it costed." Hopefully that could clarify things as Surai put her money away. Ah yes, the incident. Blue eyes turned down briefly to glance at the child by her side. For many of them it was a touchy subject. Definitely not one that she or any of the orphanage's staff talked about freely or frequently near their kids. "The dead weren't exactly resting well in their graves. They rose and..." Another glance. This time followed by a small comforting squeeze to the little one's shoulder. "We lost a great deal in the process." That was all Surai felt comfortable in saying with all her kids so close. The little girl herself had gone even quieter, but managed to nod back to Maia before focusing more on her ice cream. Surai didn't blame her. Fortunately they moved onto lighter subjects. Indeed it had been interesting for Surai herself when she'd moved to Ethea. Honestly she would've wanted to stay back home in Suraja to be with her family, but Irilys had requested the transfer over. Plus now that she lived in Ethea she did find it nice. Perhaps a little crazier on the human and Magi relations, but nice in its own way. And she could never abandon her kids now. So she smiled and took a bite from her ice cream before speaking again. "Moving can be hard, but Ethea's not so bad." A shrug followed the statement. "Everywhere has its ups and downs, and Ethea isn't any different. But after a while you can find a lot of good here. I know I did." Blue eyes turned back out over her wild menagerie of kids. They could be excitable and energetic and sometimes drive Surai up a wall with their antics, but she truly wouldn't change a thing. Compared to the old life she once had, this was living the dream. Not perfect by any means, but perfect enough for her to be happy. Her gaze turned back to Maia and she sent the younger girl a warm, kind smile. "Just give it time; you'll discover a nice niche for yourself and find the good things Ethea has to offer you. Plus get over that whole language thing. I know I had difficulty with it when I first learned it." Surai chuckled and shook her head at the memory. "It'll come faster since you're around native speakers and hear it more often. Trust me."612 WORDS FOR Maia Nomi ― Don't worry you'll get it

[attr="class","de1"] Maia only hoped it was enough money to pay for the ice cream. Prices must have been inflated here in Ethea if it cost that much. She wasn’t quite sure exactly how the money worked, but she knew that she had the money to spend, why not give it to someone who obviously needed it. She tilted her head in thought and took a tiny bite of her ice cream with a smile. At least they got the flavor right. That was always a good thing. It had certainly been hot out, and the Ikigaian girl wasn’t quite equipped for Ethean weather. The ice cream would be a good treat to have. Especially if it meant spending her ‘father’s’ money. She was jolted out of her thoughts when the woman in front of her began pulling out her own money. Wait, what? Didn’t Maia owe the woman money, she didn’t remember having this woman owe her any debts. Oh goodness, what was going on. Either way, a scowl would go on her face as she looked at the woman. “Take.” She reached her hand full of money out and held it for the woman. Her eyes softened a little and nodded towards the hiding child. “For kids, next time.” Hopefully, that would quell any more resistance from the woman. It wouldn’t be much, but Maia knew what it felt like to be alone. “Don’t care about cost.” She smirked and winked at the child before looking at the woman insistently. She didn’t want to let the tiny children down, now did she?
Maia’s eyes followed Surai’s as she glanced down at the child that was hiding behind her skirts. Apparently, it was some sort of sensitive information that shouldn’t be talked about around children. As such Maia wouldn’t push the subject when Surai answered her question, instead choosing to nod and take a bite of her ice cream. “I’m sorry for your losses.” She didn’t know exactly what was lost, but the teenager knew what it was like to lose someone that was loved. It hurt, and it hurt like hell. She had never really gotten over her mother dying, especially not to a magi, but she would never forget her, nor the love that her mother had held for her. No one could replicate that. She knew what it felt like to be left alone. On the outside, Maia had gone almost a stony sort of quiet. She had been slowly taking small bites of her ice cream with the spoon and looking down. Not wanting to scare the child that was hiding any more than she already had. Losing people wasn’t fun.
Maia would have brightened just a smidge when the topic finally moved on. It was no use thinking about those she had lost, when there was nothing she could do about it now. The transition to Ethea was hard enough, bringing feelings into the matter wouldn’t help anyone and it would just cause trouble for the generally grumpy teenager. Nope, it was much better to move on, and not think about those sorts of things. Maia would wrinkle her nose at the woman’s optimism. “Just…different.” Maia didn’t like things that were different. It made her change her ways of doing things and ways of interacting with people. Back in Ikigai this interaction would never had happened and the woman would have been better off for it. Maia knew she was not the kindest of souls, and this woman seemed to think she was nicer than she was. It honestly didn’t make any sense. “No niche…only archery.” That was the only thing she was good at, and the only thing that Maia knew well. Archery went past language and cultural barriers. It was something she could strive towards. “Ugh, Ethean too soft.” The language was too flowy and it didn’t make sense and it just wasn’t what she was used to. Was the grumpy teenager complaining? Maybe. Did she care? No.
Looking down she tilted her head. “Maybe tiny one my good thing.” She smiled, not realizing she had said it aloud. She didn’t want to scare anyone, and she liked the small ones that were in this shop. They weren’t noisy, weren’t causing a fuss, and this one seemed shy. She could relate. “Maybe I teach archery.” She actually giggled at that and pointed with her spoon to the tiny child that was hiding behind Surai’s skirts. “Want to learn?” She could maybe be a good teacher. Just maybe.

See the line where the sky meets the sea; It calls me. Goodness, she was really insistent on this wasn’t she? Despite Surai’s protests, this girl seemed downright determined to force the money into the teacher’s hands by the way she was doing this. Surai didn’t want to take advantage of someone but….At this point it was getting silly and almost downright rude. If the girl was really going to try so hard to give her this money, then so be it. It would help supplies the kids with some treats for a while. So eventually, still somewhat reluctant, Surai accepted the money was a gracious nod. ”Thank you very much then. We’ll be able to buy the kids plenty of ice cream with this." Something that made the little girl by Surai brighten up considerably. Surai had to chuckle and arch a brow. ”Not right now though; you already have some." She pointed out. Which made the little girl pout for but a moment. Fortunately they moved on from the more grim subject into one Surai could very easily relate to. Well, until she started talking about archery. Which was interesting in and of itself. Until Maia started offering to teach the little one how to shoot. Surai glanced down. Oh uh. She knew that curious gleam. The archer had certainly gotten her attention. While Surai wasn’t perhaps the biggest fan of teaching children how to use weapons, she could also understand archery might be fun. ”I….am not so sure archery would be a good thing for the very little ones to learn." She began slowly, gauging her words. The little one by her side glanced up and deflated slightly at her words. ”But," Surai interjected with a half smile, ”I could see it being a possibility if we had a controlled environment and some very attentive teachers. Maybe for the older kids." There we are: that got the little girl perking up again. Surai smiled and looked back at Maia. ”Though I don’t think we’ve ever had someone offer to do something like that. At least, not for archery. But if you really wanted to try, I’m sure we could possibly work something out. We would have to discuss things with my boss though before we could officially do anything."402 WORDS FOR Maia Nomi ― Thank you for your patience!

as long as you remember me, i don't care if everyone else forgets. [attr="class","quicklinks"]636 words But archery! Plus, big owl won't complain if I teach ALL the kids >> | [attr="class","technoscroll"] ❝ Of course Maia was insistent. Especially if it meant that she could stick it to her sperm donor. The girl wasn't going to give up on something that could actually bring joy to children, and she knew it would go to a good cause. Especially when the woman was so insistent on not taking the money. That just meant that Maia was totally doing the right thing. Smirking when the woman finally took the money Maia would nod, "Good. Kolohes1 deserve it." She would look at the little girl and wink, "Kahu2 will give later, yes." She may have been speaking in broken Ethean, but Maia was quite sincere when it came to kids. As she started to talk about archer she glanced down at the child, and smiled as she realized that she might be interested. Good. it was never too early to start training for young ones. She had been started early, and this one didn't look that young. Besides, Maia would never allow a child to be hurt, especially if she was training them. "I turn you into Maika‘i Koa3." She smiled and nodded towards the young one. A warrior she could become if she wished. Maia would make sure of it. After all, children needed to be taught how to defend themselves, especially when magi were this much of a danger in society. She would gladly teach the young ones. Maia would glance back up at the woman and tilt her head. "If they can hold a bow, they can learn." That was the good thing about her traditional ikigaian archery. "Plus, have to make bow first, ‘A‘ole pilikia4." A bow should fit the size of the person first. The kids wouldn't even begin to learn to shoot until they had crafted their own bow from the woods around. "Each bow, each kekei5." If one was to understand how to shoot, they needed to understand how the bow was made, and how it would function in a fight. Her own she had customized. It was one of the few times she had left it at the hotel, but she had wished she had it with her. Pointing to the child she would smile and question the woman, "Name of little Ali‘i6?" Maia's interest has been peaked. She would bend down, and crouch so she was at the level of the child and wave, before pointing to herself and saying, "Maia." Yes, she was introducing herself to the tiny child. It was important to her. Especially if she was going to be training her. Still, at the level of the child, Maia would turn to look back up at the woman. "Archery teach discipline, and teach defense long range." It could be beneficial to children who didn't have anyone. Especially if they were already down in the world. Raising an eyebrow Maia would nod. "Thought you boss?" She was a little confused but when wasn't she in the Ethean language? The teenager would smirk and stand, moving to pat the child on the head before rising to the level of the woman again. "Probably able to get funding... school sponsors?" Maia was always in the back of her head thinking about money, but it could work in her favor this time. Weren't the hunters trying to gain favor in the Ethean policy? Surely a charity event would give them some good reputation with the press. Plus, she was sure she could bribe her father to authorize this. especially if he wanted her to play along with this happy family routine he wanted to show as a government worker. "Maybe once a month?" That way they could start small in order to gauge whether the children wanted to learn. "I hele7 from Felici, long weekend?" Hopefully, this would work a little better for Surai.
