Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Ever since Stella had reentered his life Elijah found himself spending more and more time around the younger little ones of Haven. It was an oddity to be entirely honest. He'd spent so much time in an office or at the ground level of a demonstration (what others sometimes referred to as terrorist attacks). He'd spent so much time fighting for this grand something that it had never really occurred to him to spend some time enjoying what he'd been struggling for. Stella had returned that to his life. Nasrin had lit the initial light, the reminder to have some fragment of a life outside of business, but the return of his daughter had caused the light to spread wildly.
Hearing children's laughter. Smelling Stella's hair. Embracing that tiny form of hers. It was odd. Foreign. So much so that it honestly worried him. Bordered on disturbed him. Ever since that strange night ... alot of things disturbed him about himself. He didn't know what to call it. Some kind of possessive fear of losing what he'd just gained? An untapped corner of hatred that hadn't ripened until his daughter's tongue had been cut out of her skull. He didn't know what the fuck it was but it had been festering and growing with each growing the day. It was like each day spent in the sunlight of his current happiness also assisted in the continuation of this--this nasty dark parasite.
So when it came into his office that a Zero Magi that had been tasked in escorting a group of magi back to Haven from Dagos had just sent out a mental alert, it made him pause. Stella, through the assistance of Pathos translating verbally, had made a point to ask her father's permission to meet her friend, Annie, upon her returning home. A now eleven year old magi who was no stranger to being rescued from danger nor to Elijah who had been her savior the last time such an event had taken place.
The older earth magi had stood up from his desk with a suddeness that probably surprised the young MLM agent who had given in the report. That was Stella's friend in that escort. Gritting his teeth, Elijah would already be on his way out before the agent could ask for further instruction. "Anyone can come along who can keep up." Would be his only direction. "Pathos, stay here and keep filing please." And with that, the man would be a blur with the confused MLM member following behind as well as he could. The parasite in his chest cavity broiled. No way in hell was he going to allow some hunter bastard take something else away from his daughter.

Notes Come on old man, the fun's already started!
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Caroline’s frequent forays into the woods were more than just hunting missions; many times, she was simply scouting. Looking at trails, stalking refugees from a distance, letting hunters move down a path for an hour or two before finishing them off… It was an important part of her ‘work.’ Over the months, she learned plenty of useful information; common paths taken by refugees, updated hunting grounds, which trails were no longer in use… All of it cross-referenced with old hunter data and maps. She may not be a true hunter or tracker, but knowing the lay of the forest and where encounters were likely to happen gave her an edge up on her enemies. It was also how she knew a group of magi were in danger. She felt the wrongness in the air, as if Arecia was getting used to her presence and giving her hints that not all was peaceful. It could be all in her head, but who knew when it came to the woods? She hadn’t expected it had a personality before she met Lelianna. The disturbance was felt along the trail often used for Dagos refugees. Caroline ran through the woods, racing down the trail as fast as she could. She knew a hunting party was in the area, and if they were after this group… A gunshot confirmed her fears. Shit. No time for subtlety; Caroline, clad in her head-to-toe disguise, kicked her thrusters on and rushed towards the sounds. A quick shift to thermal optics after a few moments of running told her that both parties had way more people than she expected. There might already be casualties, but she’d be damned if there would be any more. She entered the fray with a well-placed throwing axe to the neck of a hunter. With a burst from her hydraulic legs, she dove towards a magi- a young girl, by the looks of her, and slid in front of her just as a burst of gunfire hit the shield she put up just in time. She huddled over her, keeping an arm around her protectively. Metal clinked as more bullets bounced off her shield. “Stay down, I’ve got you,” she said. She whipped her revolver from its holster and returned fire, covering them as she scooted them behind a tree. Fuck, there were a LOT of hunters, and the refugees didn’t have the skill to deal with it, from the looks of it. Only a few seemed to understand combat. “Don’t worry, we’ll make it out,” she assured the girl, stealing a quick glance at her. It was a good thing her own identity was hidden, because she recognized the girl immediately. It was the little earth magi girl she’d almost killed so many months ago. Apparently the universe had a sense of irony. Though there was no way she could have foreseen just how much deja-vu she was about to feel.

Permission to move Caro was given prior Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Help is close.
Amidst the realm of complete concentration the assurance was soft, barely audible. The water magi grit her teeth. Damn this was stressful. The sounds of panicked breathing, bombardments from the outside. They were all being pushed aside as well as she could. What she needed to concentrate on was the task at hand. Nothing else.
Help is clo-- "Manny, I got it. Just ... please shut up. Focusing." Tamara would apologize at a later date for her harsh tone. Now though was not the time to be mentally whispering the same shit over and over in her head. For others, it could be assuring, meditative perhaps. But to Tamara it was more annoying and distracting than anything else. Apologies and mending any hurt feelings were for another day. Right now though ... Tamara grit her teeth at another strike given by the enemy. Right now they just needed to get out of this alive.
Manuel wasn't that soft of a social flower. The zero magi would retreat from his telepathic link with his partner and would nod once, whispering an apology verbally. He would attempt to give as much a reassuring smile to the child who whimpered at the latest barrage of bullets bouncing off his partner's protective bubble."Shh," He would say with a hand motion to remind the kid to keep their head down and eyes closed as he'd instructed earlier.
A muffled shout of what Manny could only guess were insults would bring his attention back to the outside of the bubble just in time to see another collection of bullets bounce off their protective dome. A side eye would be cast momentarily to the masked stranger that had been entrapped underneath with them. If a gaze was directed his way he would meet it with a cautious curiosity. There weren't supposed to be any MLM units around last he'd heard in his orders of escorting refugees. There was a consciousness that could be tapped into if he wished to express anything telepathically so he had no reason to believe the individual was anything but organic.
But he did note it was an oddity for a magi to not utilize their element when in combat. A human sympathizer perhaps? As far as Manuel was concerned he didn't much care what race they were. The little girl that held onto her for dear life was telling enough. As was the axe left in one of the deceased's skulls. A silent nod of appreciation would be given before being interrupted by the telepathic voice in his head. Gaze snapping outwards, he'd stand as well as he could within the dome's perimeter. Hands balled into fists he'd grin. "Visual made." He'd say out loud, not wishing to interrupt Tamara again. "The boss came himself."
As if on cue the ground would tremble violently. The muffling of gun fire would be heard for the first time not resulting in an afront on the defensive bubble. "Finally." Tamara would mutter through grit teeth. The blur of the giant trees about them coming to life to lend a deafening strikes could be made out before an earth dome would begin to form around the watery self defense.
"Tamara," Manuel began, taking note of the speed of the earthen dome forming. "I'm going to have you release early so I can help. You stay here." Turning to the stranger after the water magi would give a grunt in understanding, Manuel would bow his head lightly. You can come too if you wish to. Just be fast. It will close up quickly. He'd had time to reassess the happenings leading up to their entrapment inside such a watery fort and he wasn't a fool. That stranger had saved his life. That moment when he had just been two seconds slow in responding, this stranger had not only saved that girl's life but his own. She was no enemy of theirs. This was an ally he'd be honored to fight along side.
"Now." He'd say, his gaze finally skyward. Tamara would take the cue, allowing herself to slump into a heavily breathing prostrated laying down. Her partner however would be jumping through the earthen dome before it had a chance to close entirely. If the stranger followed behind him, the more the better. At least the others were safe.

Notes Let's kill these nerds and get to the fun part
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Now that the immediate threat was delayed, Caroline could take a moment and assess the situation. The first thing she noticed was the magi staring at her. The second was the protective bubble, which was so far doing a good job of providing cover, though the strain on the water magi was obvious. She wasn’t addressed directly, and so didn’t have much to say. Or, that was what she thought, until she heard the heavy breathing of Anne. “Are you okay?” She said. The magi girl just nodded. Damn, she was just a kid, Caroline thought, just like she was when they were enemies. Just how young was the MLM recruiting? Not that she could blame them, though; hunters were merciless, and things must be desperate. “It’s fine, we’re getting out of here,” she said. She perked up at the zero magi’s next words, and felt a chill crawl along her skin. The boss came himself. That could only mean one person, and the quaking ground and moving trees only confirmed her thoughts. Shit. Things just got a lot more awkward, if at least a little safer. The psychic intrusion into her mind made her jump, snapping her focus back to the situation at hand. She only nodded at him, and gently uncurled herself from her protective position around Anne. “Stay here. You’re safe.” She said, before holstering her revolver and springing after the zero magi. Whatever the battlefield looked like now, her focus was on finding the hunters and making them regret their life decisions. She decided to go gunless because she wasn’t about to take on friendly fire from the blind leader of the MLM. The goal was acquisition and elimination. A small tussle with a swordsman here, a throwing axe cleaving through an assault rifle there, showing a hunter why practicing hand-to-hand was important there; she was an efficient blur, unhindered by the odd bullet or slash against her skin that the hunters might manage to land. The tides were turned, now; what should have been an easy quarry turned into a fatal mistake in the blink of an eye as two powerful (and pissed off) fighters decided to even the odds.

Who dis tank alloy gal? Feel free to use npc Manuel Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face There were no survivors. Not this time. There tended not to be anymore. It wasn't questioned thus far, by friend or foe. This was the fight for his people's survival against an enemy that wanted little more than to commit a full genocide upon those that shared his race. Prisoners were a rarity all around but especially in the recent weeks, there were unheard of. Not a single one for over a month.
The older man's fist proved strong, unhindering in its grip as the form wrapped tightly in forestry continued to squirm. The rest of his team were finishing up with their tag teamed targets but this one, this one was his. The sludge broiled in his chest. How much had his daughter struggled against her captors? There had been no mercy then. There wouldn't be any today.
The fist maintained its tension as it suddenly spread its fingers wide. Thorns burst out of the vines with a violent sudden growth, leaving the squirming enemy jerking once harshly. Elijah wasn't like them. He wasn't going to prolong this man's death anymore than he already had. The thorns plunged deeply enough to kill, not torture. He wasn't like that. It would feel damn good though, wouldn't it?
The inner voice would be left answer-less. Elijah swallowed hard as the form before him struggled less and less. A blinking of those blind eyes would follow, almost as if an attempt to blink away a daze. "Sir?" A sniff of the nose later and the man would straighten his posture. The hand would finally relax to his side. "Sir?"
"Hm?" Elijah turned around to face the familiar voice.
"We believe it's clear, sir." The statement would be made with a lightly insinuated question. To him it seemed clear. But to the earth magi who could feel the earth's vibrations for miles in perimeter, there could be something he was unaware of that his boss would be.
Elijah knew the familiar non-question well. The man paused, focusing. All those that had been confronting his agents had been taken down. He was aware of that much. But then there it was. That step. That very very heavy step. A weight that no organic living being should be. "Who's accounting for the cyborg?" He'd ask with an accurate point of his finger to the stranger.

Notes Oh man fun idea: What if the trees refused to attack her at Elijah's command due to her new relationship with Leli/Arecia?
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS The last hunter she engaged ended up being a showcase for her skill. He was competent in hand to hand combat, but Caroline was an expert. She blocked a few incoming strikes and seized her opponent’s wrist at the first opportunity. With a strike upwards with her free arm, she snapped his arm with a sickening crack that bounced off the trees. She flowed like a protagonist from an Ikigaian martial-arts movie, planting a few more powerful strikes that left her human opponent staggered. Broken nose, broken rib, several snapped fingers, another fracture to the same arm; she never let him get away, breaking him physically and mentally until he could do nothing but fall to the forest floor, where Caroline secured his arms using a zip-tie she kept on her person. She looked around, seeing that the battle was over. The magi were safe, that was true, but Caroline… well, her safety was still in question. Slowly, she stood, hefting the unconscious hunter off his feet. As soon as she took a few steps, he called her out, as anticipated. Manuel turned to regard the hooded figure, a bit surprised. A cyborg sympathizer, not a human one? Their brain was organic, at least; that much he was sure of. He turned to his boss. “I don’t know who they are personally, sir, but I do know that without their intervention at least one more civilian would be dead. Likely more.” He regarded the hooded figure with a tilted head. “Do you have a name?”Caroline nodded. Before she said anything, she tossed the hunter unceremoniously to the ground in front of Elijah’s feet. They could question him later, if they wished, though it would be unlikely to get anything out of a hunter; most feared their goddess above all else, and with good reason. Caroline pulled down her face mask and hood, saving Manuel from having to guess whether to say “Mr.” or Ms.” “The last time we met, it was not as allies,” she said to Elijah. As soon as the words left her, she braced to evade whatever attack he may throw her way. Gods willing, she wouldn’t have to dodge earthquakes while pleading her case.

Why won't the trees drive you through like a skewer? Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face “The last time we met, it was not as allies.”
One sentence. Oh, how quickly the atmosphere shifted with those words hitting the air. It was near instantaneous. The earth trembled as Elijah's brows furrowed severely. That voice. Oh, he remembered that voice. It had been accompanied by a set of hard hitting punches and flying bullets the last time. Originally meant for a child. The same little girl that had been apart of the escorted group this time again. My, the fates sure had their finger set on that little Annie, didn't they?
The earth surrounding Caroline would buckle, attempting to then shoot up a earthen walls that would aim to encompass the woman up to her knees in the least. The trap was meant to keep the target stationary, not harm. No, the harming was coming. Miguel along with the other MLM agents stared wide eyed as they unconsciously took steps back, some of them stumbling backwards due to the magnitude of the tremor. Those scarred eyes would glare hatefully from behind those dark tinted sunglasses as his arms made the motions. A single powerful punch downwards ...
... would go without magical action. Silence in fact. Elijah's fist shook with anticipation to only recoil at sheer block of utter reticence his magically inclined request had beget. His mind would instantly yell outwards. Why were none of the trees answering his plea? This was a woman that had attempted the murder of not only himself but a mere child! After painstaking seconds ticked by on Miguel's humble timepiece, Elijah would straighten his posture from his defensive one. The earth trap, if it still held true in keeping Caroline still, would remain intact.
"Why does the forest think you're a friend?" He'd ask with a strict tone of voice. It was one that displayed his frustration and confusion all at once. What did the forest know that he didn't? Last he looked, this woman was hunter scum that was hell bent on spraying the blood of a little girl barely older than his own Stella. "Last we met you were no ally of ours." And assuredly that was putting it mildly. His agents around him didn't question the actions but watched on tentatively. Was it safe? Was this an undercover enemy?

Notes Because that might make Leli cry.
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS This was going to be the hardest part. Caroline didn’t move when the earth encased her legs; she could use her strength to burst out if need be. He was going to hurt her, and while she deserved it, she’d preferred to be able to get in a few words first. No sudden or aggressive moves would be taken other than a brace for impact. And impact that never game. She was just as shocked as Elijah that the forest wasn’t attacking her. A silent thank you was uttered to the woods, and a mental note made to thank Lelianna and Arecia later. They just saved her a LOT of trouble. “No, I was a monster,” she said. “I want to talk with you now, if I may. But first… Manny, was it?” She turned to the zero magi and nodded. “Keep an eye on me. I’m going to disarm, slowly.” If given the opportunity she would do just that; first, she slung off her folded-up sniper rifle and tossed it to Manny’s feet. Next was her revolver; she let the bullets spill to the dirt and tossed it to him. She couldn’t get her knife due to the dirt, but she did toss him her handaxe as well. Finally, her integrated weapons whirred from her wrists. She held her hands up high and let the shotgun shells drop. “You can pat me down if you want,” she said. If he wanted, she would make no resistance. She was on thin, THIN ice and had to establish what trust she could. Her hands would stay behind her head the entire time they spoke. No. Sudden. Movements. Hopefully she could talk now. “I’m sure you get the news in Haven,” she began. “More than half a year ago, there was a huge story about a government officer committing treason, who killed the head of their hunter relations department, and leaked all of their dirty secrets to anyone who wanted to see them fall.” She gave a little shrug. “That’s me. Caroline Vorlan, formerly Enthaupten.” She looked around at the forest. “As for why the trees think I’m an ally… well… I’ve been working on it. I’ve lived in the woods since that day; most of my free time is spent turning the hunters into prey and patrolling your refugee routes to make sure they get back safely. I’m not sure if you know Lelianna Varna, the earth magi who lives near haven with the miles-long garden? She… well… we’ve gotten, ah, close?” P…probably best not to get too detailed with that yet. “Arecia seems to vouch for me, and Lelianna will, but if you need someone else, a few people helped me escape the guild. The broker in Dagos, Inclemens? She helped me the most; it’s… a long story. Without her and Luca Burke, I might never have made it. Priestess Santos has also spoken with me not long ago.” She wasn’t sure who Elijah new but if she kept naming names then maybe, if the gods were kind, he would know and trust at least one of them. “I know you have no reason to believe any of this, but I’m no longer the enemy,” she said with pointed determination.

Walk and talk, boo Let me know if I need to edit Mae's text please Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Manuel started at being named by an apparent possible new threat according to his boss. It almost felt guilt-inducing. The zero magi would legitimately jump at hearing his nickname. "Y-yeah?" The fellow MLM agents still at ground level would semi-arm themselves. Each one would collecting their personalized element around them. Manny on the other hand however would stare on and nod at the stranger's words. "Slowly please." He'd repeat after her.
Weapon after weapon, they'd fall. Elijah could feel each one. His eyes never alleviated in their narrowed suspicious manner, though it wasn't exactly visible from behind those darkly tinted lenses. His fists remained tightly clenched. The earth taking after his cue would remain secure in its entrapping position around the woman's legs. She was offering to be patted down. Elijah could almost feel the worried glance that cast his way. Manuel was more trained as a support class. A healer, a caster of illusions. He wasn't exactly familiar, trained or comfortable with having a more hands on approach as this went.
"I've got it." Stepped forward one of the MLM agents that had come with Elijah, a member of the cavalry. An older lass would step forward. One whose hands were precise, well informed, and not shy with the task. Upon finding nothing the woman would step away. "Clear as far as I can tell. But you know cyborg types." Racism evident in her tone, there would be a shrug. Fair enough, it wasn't exactly easy to pat down a being that could have hollow nooks and crannies hidden through out their form.
Elijah inhale deeply, giving the scene thought. It wouldn't be much longer than ten seconds before he pulled out a device. The familiar snap sound of a camera would sound before Elijah would text with a thumb that knew the cellular phone's buttons by heart. Time sensitive. Safe? A text would send, regardless if there was any protest made by another. This familiar voice had named off numerous names, all of which were acquaintances of his, in the every least. But one in particular. One had stood out the most.
The cell would buzz in his hand not much after. Holding the cell up this his ear, he'd play the text to voice program. The electronic medium was speak the words that had been sent back to him with the usual impressive timing. "Safe. Trust her; useful ally." Well holy shit. The cyborg that had been hell bent on murdering a child just months ago had turned over a leaf. He didn't trust her just by her word, but he was trustful of his niece. Maevia would never betray him, they were family after all.
The earth that had imprisoned her legs would now crumble, breaking apart as if loose sand it would fall to the wayside. "Walk with me." Elijah would say simply, the order clearly meant for the cyborg. "The rest of you tend to the refugees and escort them the rest of the way." And with that Elijah would casually motion with his head the direction of which this walk would take place. It was time to better get to know this Caroline Vorlan.

Notes Well, let's use our words
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Every move was slow, deliberate, and exaggerated in a way that made her person as visible as could be. She did not blame the magi for gathering to strike at her; her reputation as a villain was exactly why she went to Haven with a hood over her head. There were no delusions dancing in her head; she would never be welcomed by the Magi as a friend. She hoped, though, she could at least assist them as an ally. One look around at the MLM was enough for her to see that they needed what she could offer. Hopefully she’d live long enough to extend the olive branch. She remained silent through the comments and thorough pat-down by the grizzled woman. It was… not prudent to mention that it didn’t matter if she was armed, since she could probably wipe out the squad with just her fists. Her lips stayed closed. When Elijah took the picture, though, her eye narrowed. She didn’t like having photographs of her around; if they got into the wrong hands, it could endanger not only herself, but everything she’s been working for. Not like she had a choice now. Fortunately it seemed that whoever he consulted with had put in a good word with her. She pulled her legs up and out of the loose earth, shaking the particles from her jeans and boots. “Hey love,” she said to the rougher woman who pat her down. She lifted her jeans to expose the boot knife and extended her leg to her. “Might want to get that one, too.” With that, it was time to follow Elijah. “You believe me,” She half-asked, half-stated. Thank the gods for small miracles. Still, belief was all she had- there was no trust, respect, or like- and despite the fact that it was a walk, she was under no delusions; this was an interrogation. If Kingsley was stupid, the MLM wouldn’t have gotten this far. She placed her hands behind her back and stayed in stride with him. “What do you want to know first?”

I trust Mae. But I sure as hell find your story odd. Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face The MLM agents that were left behind followed the order given to them. The gruff female magi that had stepped forward to do the pat down still held the knife she'd taken from the cyborg. It was a decent standard. Nothing to sniffle at. If she could snag it for herself without her boss getting snippy with her, she would have. But at the end of the day it wasn't worth it. Expertly throwing it, she'd thunk it into the ground, fully aware that if she had sunk it into a tree she would have gotten an equal earful.
The earth dome that had protected the civilian refugees would crumble, allowing a reunion of sorts. The group would converse shortly before beginning their way again to Haven. Annie would glance back in the direction of her two saviors before following behind. If eye contact were made with the little girl would give an appreciative wave and smile. As for the two adults walking in the opposite direction of the group, Elijah would briefly make a sound similar to an antique door squeaking upon rusty hinges.
"I wouldn't say that." The earth magi would correct. "It's not you, no offense. It's the individual I inquired about you that I trust." The older man would crack his neck to the side once as they continued on, their steps in harmony with each other. His age, especially given his race's tendency to live lengthier lives, would be showcased in the grey strands of hair that now more thoroughly sprinkled through his dreads.
"Well," Elijah would begin, a light non-laugh leaving his lips. "I guess a good place to start would be asking why?" Those scarred eyes blinked once as he knowingly continued his stride easily around a line of wild bushes. "The why is kind of important in this equation. Because I'm not understanding the change of heart. You're not human, but your race is appreciated at least as a tool where we're seen as undesirables that would be best annihilated."
His own hands unknowingly would mirror the woman's beside him, folding behind his back. "Why are you helping us after spending so much time killing us? Last time we met, you were trying to kill a child. People who kill children are not the sort to suddenly gain a conscious." The words were spoken matter-of-factly. Sternly. There was no powdering the words to be softer or less harsh. They were what they were. Very similar to the situation they were in.

I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Two things made her foray worth it: Annie’s wave and smile, which was returned, and the frustrated knife throw by the angry woman. She nodded to Elijah as they walked. “I’ll take it,” she said. Thanks were in order for whoever he asked; it probably saved her a crushed leg and an unnecessary fight. She took the time to consider the man next to her. Elijah Kingsley, the leader of the MLM and perhaps the hunter’s guild’s main target; despite his age and his blindness, he managed to be the most dangerous enemy yet (though Caroline liked to think that she was giving him a run for his money in that department). He certainly carried an air around him that said he was in command; tough, but not cruel. She could respect that. She had no reaction to his matter-of-fact statements because she agreed with them. There was no erasing her past. “You’re right,” she said. “The woman you met before would never have changed her ways. I didn’t have a conscience. What happened… well, it’s a long story, and it all seems a bit fantastical. The broker can confirm it, if you think she can be trusted.” With that, she began her story. She told him of the fire, and how she ended up in her cybernetic body. She talked about the implant, what it did to her, and how she was used for years. Nothing about it was painted in emotion; it was all just stated. Facts. She went on to talk about how she worked with (or rather, was saved by) the broker and Luca to remove the implant after it was damaged in a struggle. That was when she learned about her past, and who she was before the implant, which was the woman he was speaking to. She then explained her exit (with a bit of a smile cracking her lips), complete with the murder of her father, release of sensitive records and coverups, and her liberation of their supplies. “That was when I moved to Arecia and met Lelianna Varna,” she said. “Now my skills and time are put towards making sure the hunters regret their lives, and cut them short. As I said it’s… a hard story to believe. I wouldn’t ask you to take my word for it.” She let her fingers brush the leaves of a bush they passed. “I understand how it sounds,” she continued. “Make no mistake. The situation does not excuse anything that I’ve done; I’m beyond forgiveness and wouldn’t think to ask for it. Those years haunt me every day.” She paused. Sighed. Shook her head. “I deserve it, and worse. The least I can do is try to prevent as many deaths and sad stories that I can; the magi deserve better. I would be lying, though, if I didn’t say part of what I do is done for my own revenge.” She shrugged. Dead hunters were dead hunters. “I’ve been patrolling known hunting grounds and your refugee routes for months. No doubt you’ve heard reports, though I didn’t expect you to know it was me.” Vegetation hushed as she stopped walking. She looked to Elijah and stood as an officer before a superior. “I was actually hoping I would get the chance to speak to you, Mr. Kingsley. If you’ll continue to hear me out… I want to offer my assistance to the MLM in the future.”

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face It was a short tale. An unknown amount of time would pass amidst soft breezes rustling leaves as this Vorlan retailed her experiences. The placement of the sun would have sunk lower in the evening's sky. The older man would listen quietly, never interrupting or even giving a "hm" in between each chapter and bullet point. It would be a relatively undisturbed conversing. Even a distant woodpecker high up in the canopy would cease its thunking into the bark of a tree. It was rare that Arecia seemed to hush to this extent for the sake of mortal exchanges.
It is good they do. Elijah would think to himself. It was good that those days haunted her. The lives that had been snuffed out were best not forgotten that history be repeated. But equally as important, it meant that she did have that conscious that Elijah had mentioned at the beginning of their walk. The story seemed credible not just because of Maevia's green light but also because of that fact alone said with sincerity that rang true to the man's sensitive ears.
Quiet he would remain until the young woman offer herself to his cause. The proposal would be met with a lengthy inhale through the nose. There was alot to address. Where to start? Elijah would choose to begin with the latest spoken of and work his way back. "I appreciate the offer and will most likely take you up on it in a personal sense in the very least." Elijah would begin, his boot crunching a pinecone underfoot as the pair continued their stride. "As for anything that I'm not personally involved with I can't speak for. The MLM does not have one face and one voice. I am but one." He didn't see the harm in sharing that. If anything it meant the MLM was stronger than previously believed with possible lacking of this knowledge. If he fell, the movement was still strong.
"So I cannot guarantee that you will ever be officially considered MLM because of your past. Obviously there are those in my number that would be fairly wary of you." That was putting it lightly. "But that's nitpicking details. You will more than likely get a knock on your door. A dead enemy is one less person that can make another orphan. I'm not picky on how we get that conclusion."
Hands would be pushed into his pockets as his blind gaze went skyward. Gods, this was wonderful weather. It was funny how his brain had been so previously occupied he'd only just noticed. Fall was a damn lovely season. "I am thankful that you've chosen to go this direction. It would have been a shame to kill you in the field ... which honestly brings me to a topic that has unnerved a few of my peers."
The gaze would turn rightward to his strolling partner. "I'm guessing due to how dates closely relate that the source of our learning of the implants came from your situation." Yeah, that gave away that Maevia spoke to the MLM. But, again, he didn't think that was too difficult to believe if it hadn't been thought of previously. His niece was an Information Broker after all. It would be bad for business if she didn't. "A few members of my circle have grown disturbed that we could be killing victims of a different kind in the field. Brain washing seeming to be an ugly fact of the human's approach to their growing hatred of us. As much as we wish to keep our people safe, there are those of us that don't wish to kill those that wouldn't be in the position they are in if it wasn't for the unnatural fiddling with their brains."
"As someone who has been killing hunters at a rate I did happen to notice." Elijah would chuckle lightly. It was difficult not to after all. Sudden piles of bodies of the enemy that no one could account for had passed over his desk quite the few times. "You don't seem to be holding back your punches even in knowing that this could be a factor. I would be interested in hearing your view on this moral debate we've been having the past few months; seeing as you are an individual who was personally affected by it. I would find your opinion on killing versus arresting most valuable if you wouldn't mind." A business smile would be shared with the woman beside him. "After that I wouldn't be against touching on other subjects."

I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS She nodded gratefully. “I didn’t expect to be considered one of the movement’s members- not officially, anyway. It hardly seems right, considering my past, and if I started grumbling amid your allies it would only be a detriment to the cause.” She straightened up. “I would prefer to simply stay allies.” She smirked at his comment. “And I’m grateful you chose to listen to me. It would have been a shame to have to kill you in self-defense.” Unfortunately the brief lift in the mood wasn’t mean to last. Her entire face furrowed at the implication that more brainwashing was occurring. It wasn’t surprising, given her recent encounter with the Mad Dog and investigation of Axium. Still, it was disturbing, and brought up a moral point she hadn’t considered. What if there were more like her? Arguably good people who have been brainwashed by Axium, acting as directed by some racists pulling the strings… Her fists clenched. “No, I have not,” she confirmed. “I’ve seen the inner workings of the guild first-hand. I know how relentlessly cruel they can be without outside influence or implanted devices; there are no good hunters, no matter what they say. I can’t afford to hold back; they act like predators- if they sense a weakness or hesitation, they’ll strike.” Still, she made a sound somewhere between a sigh and a frustrated growl. “You know what it’s like to face them. What it was like to face me. And I can remember what it was like to have that single-minded determination, driven by hatred without any of the trappings of morality or emotion.” She turned to Elijah, her tone growing dire, with each word distinctly punctuated. “If they are brainwashed, they. Will. Not. Stop. You cannot bargain, trust, or relax for a moment. If you plan to arrest them, your companions would do well to remember that their minds are gone, as well as their morality; restrain them like a rabid wolf, not a normal soldier. While I… would like to see more recoveries like mine, I don’t think it’s wise to risk your peoples’ lives to do so.” She turned away, her voice softening to normal. “I would not have blamed anyone for killing me. I would have. What you’re proposing could be dangerous, but perhaps the risk is worth it; you’d make some key allies if they could, indeed, be saved.” Her fingertips brushed the bark of trees they strolled past. “I’m doing an independent investigation on the people behind the brainwashing technology. I would be grateful for any more leads the MLM might obtain. It would only help us both in the long run. If you’re careful, arrests could be a hidden boon.” Whenever their discussion on Axium was finished, Caroline remembered the other subject she wished to discuss. She stopped at attention, facing Elijah. “There are two other ways I would offer my help as a consultant, if you’ll at least consider it,” she said. “The first is information. Detailed information. Not only maps and databases and locations of hunting routes, but personal experience; I know their tactics, I’ve been studying their shifting target areas, I understand their protocol and how they’ve been trained. I could share this with your strategists and teach them what I know.” She hesitated on the second. This one might… come out as a disguised insult. But it had to be said; lives were on the line here. Hopefully he would listen. “The second is combat training. That was my main job before I left. I’m not proud of it, but it could give the MLM an edge; as the one who trained most of the hunters, I am the best suited to training to counter them.” She sighed. “I hope you do not view this as an insult, but the MLM lacks combat discipline; they are powerful, inspired, and willing, but it’s very clear to me that most of them have never been taught combat basics. They’re not soldiers. You know as well as I do that magic is not always there to depend on; exhaustion, surprise, downers: all of these are threats. Your enemy is organized, even during the heat of battle. They know this is their advantage, but-” she said, now cracking a smile. “-That can be turned into your favor. They think of the MLM as nothing more than a bunch of ragtag, loosely-organized militants, and their tactics match. They don’t respect you enough to adapt quickly. If their tactics no longer work, it can give you some momentum. Save some more lives.”
