NO GAME NO LIFE
MISSION
Investigate a mysterious string of disappearances in Ethea's Bojmir Mountains, find the cause, and neutralize it.
DETAILS
2-3 participants. Extreme difficulty.
Within the past few months, reports have been trickling in about a series of exceedingly strange disappearances, preying upon mostly hikers and local townspeople, within the Bojmir Mountain Range. The number of victims has not risen above a dozen as of yet, but the Ethean government's attention has been captured by the cause of these disappearances— namely that the cause is completely unknown. Search parties have been sent up the mountain peaks to scour for the people yet all efforts ultimately hit a dead end when any tracks and traces of the victims suddenly vanish, as if the people themselves had simply winked out of existence or been snatched up into the sky. Quite the conundrum. It's this eerily supernatural nature of the disappearances that has led the government to believe that a Spirit or illusionist is involved, though all details beyond this vague hunch are unknown. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to venture into the mountains and make use of a Spirit Sensor (random piece of tech that I'm just gonna hope is plausible) to find the culprit and put a stop to it; also to rescue the other victims, if possible. Want to know what's really going on?

It is, in fact, the work of a Spirit. A clever and sadistic one that has recently made its home in the mountains and begun amusing itself by turning unsuspecting humans and magi alike into its personal playthings. The Spirit has the ability to cast powerful wards that will passively deter anyone who tries to enter warded areas and it uses this magic to close its victims in, making it seem to outsiders as if the person's very footsteps trail off into nothing. It doesn't do this to every lone person it comes across, though, no this Spirit most enjoys ensnaring groups of mortals so that it can set up elaborate "games" for them to play, pitting its victims against one another with the promise that all winners will go free. Since no one has come back alive from this yet... we can assume that either no one has won, or that the Spirit isn't the type to keep promises. Those who accept this mission will almost certainly find themselves trapped in one of these games— it could be a race to escape a maze or solving deadly puzzles or some other unpleasant surprise —and will have to both survive this and try to destroy the Spirit responsible. Interestingly enough, the Spirit is physically very weak, but capable of weaving powerful illusions and manipulating the environment inside its wards like a true Dungeon Master. You'll have to find its physical body somewhere among the illusion to escape the game. Or... you could throw your companions under the bus and just try to win.
