Tick tock.
Complications. The very word was distasteful on Elise's lips. She liked being in control, knowing every player and every piece on the board. When something changed, it had to be handled carefully, delicately. When she'd started dealing with the University, she had gotten to know the liaison, and by extension, the University itself. The representative couldn't make deals outside of what they had been authorized to offer, but she could still be on top if she knew what it was that made the representative tick. If she could manipulate that person, she could manipulate the dealings, albeit carefully. The last representative had been easy to read. Who knew about this new one?
She wore her usual business attire, although the brass buttons weren't fastened along the front. In a place like Dagos' Black Market, she was always careful to have her weapon close at hand, and her gloved fingers ran along the thin leather surface of her whip as she sat on a stool outside the noodle stand. She had waved the old woman server off twice now, as she awaited the woman who was replacing the last representative. She still had about ten minutes before she could be considered late.
Disorganized as Elise could be, she would never have been late for meeting a new business contact. She could only hope that the woman would have the same courtesy.
Leaning forward, Elise rested her chin on her hand, leaving the other in its place on Treachery's leather body. There were slaves to break, deals to arrange, and she was stuck wasting time here. How absolutely boring. Her brown eyes swept over the street as she waited, wondering if she could spot the woman before she walked up. There were a number of Magi in disguise, and she noted the fact with no small amount of satisfaction. Dagos was an endless well of targets for her trade, which is why she'd chosen to put her base here. That and the delightful lack of law enforcement.
The clock on the noodle stand's back wall told her that there were five minutes left. Five minutes. Then she'd been properly annoyed.

There were many a type to make their way through the darker corners of Dagos. The Black Market had a manner of attracting one of every sort. The single mother looking for work in different venues to support her son. The little boy running messages for the mob. The drug addict wandering to see where her next hit would come from. The hired guns waiting outside of buildings while their bosses conduct business inside. The streets acted as a flame to those desperate enough or skilled enough to search for what they were seeking for; money, pleasure, information, help. So it wasn't overly odd to see a woman such as Emiko make her way down the patch-work pavement. Not overly common, but not out of place enough to stand out like a sore thumb.
She didn't wear combat gear or clothing for physical activities, nor excessively sexualized clothing to insinuate a certain occupation. The chilled atmosphere would be greeted with an unbuttoned name brand winter coat, pencil skirt and frilly blouse. The clicking of her stilettos were telling with every step. Her stride was not one of a wanderer or one filled with uncertaintiy. The professor was there for a reason. Her steps were filled with purpose and a direct bee-line to where she wished to go. Hands comfortably in her pockets and the antique pen hanging from her neck on a titanium chain.
Emiko knew who she was looking for having taken into consideration the description the file had to offer. A ginger-brunette, brown eyes, female. Em had assumed the slave driver would hold a certain air about her and indeed she did. It was almost as if magnetic that her scarlet eyes would find the Ms Argent. Smiling with something that would be best categorized as a "professionally polite smile" Em would close the distance between the two, her heels sounded with every step.
It would be shortly after the five minute mark that Em would have first caught eye of the woman and it would be shortly afterwards that Emi would be standing before her. "Good afternoon." Would be her initial greeting. If a hand reached out to meet hers, Emiko would shake hands. If there was no sign for such a formality to occur, Emiko would still bow slightly forward in the traditional Ikigain fashion as her mother long ago had taught her.
"I appreciate your willingness to pencil me into your busy schedule." The runic professor would state as she either retrieved her hand or rose up from her bow. "And your professional understanding during this transition. My name is Dr Emiko Inoue and I will be representing the University in this discussion."

[attr="class","oho"] oh darling, just let me hear you scream it makes your voice so much sweeter. [attr="class","monalisa"]Elise's eye traveled up and down the woman, a pleased smile on her lips as she evaluated the woman. A little on the taller side, a pleasing face, and a flattering outfit that was perfectly appropriate for a business meeting, but didn't hide her curves... Elise hadn't expected the representative to be young and beautiful. She was about Elise's age, it seemed, and from the way she carried herself, she was used to having her own way. A woman after Elise's own heart. The smile that Elise gave in return for the greeting was genuine, but she didn't offer her hand for shaking. She didn't offer touches so lightly, and whether she was impressed with the woman or not, she didn't trust the woman just yet. Instead, she inclined her head slightly in a polite nod.
"It is a pleasure, Dr. Inoue," she said, meaning it. "I must say, I was expecting someone... older. And perhaps balder. Certainly not a beautiful woman."
She watched the doctor carefully, though no hint of her examination showed on her face. The compliment was small, but how Dr. Inoue took it would set the tone for how their relationship could proceed from this point. People who were susceptible to flattery were often easy to bribe, but people who were particularly prudish were a bit more challenging but a lot more rewarding in the end. They didn't often get the attention that made them feel special, so they were a lot more pliable once they began to believe that the interest was genuine. In Dr. Inoue's case, it just might be.
Elise's expression was perhaps a shade too warm to be strictly professional, but she kept it just at that line. She knew how far it was safe to push it, and how to take advantage of the favor she earned because of her ability to seem personable. Like most good lies, it was half truth and half fabrication. She genuine liked a lot of the people that she met, just for different reasons than they would have liked.
Her attention turned to the elderly woman, who was coming to try one last time to get Elise's order. The slaver turned her attention onto the doctor for a moment.
"I hope you don't mind," she said, tilting her head apologetically. "I've not had my lunch, and I have it on good authority that this place makes some great noodles."
If the doctor gave her the go ahead, she would order her bowl with the confidence of someone who came to places like this a lot. Having something to do with her hands and mouth would give her a little extra time to think, if she needed the space in the discussion. It would also allow her to retreat without losing respect, which was important in a negotiation. It was part of the reason she enjoyed negotiating at restaurants.

The comments succeeded in getting the business oriented professor to chuckle. A victorious moment in of itself. Emiko was not a stranger to flattery, a fact she would openly admit with a good few shots in her. However to the woman's dismay it was usually offered from males. The gender that no matter how much she squinted at brought her zero interest. So with such ideas being expressed by a fellow female a smirk would stretch across those daintily painted lips, "Flattery will get you certain places, Ms Argent." Emiko informed her. With a single step forward the professor would lean forward lightly to give the illusion of further privacy from the rest of the atmosphere also accompanying it with a softer volumed voice. "But only those certain places."
Returning to her prim and proper posture she would offer the slave driver the same amused smirk as before. It was a simple two sentences but they carried their fair share of weight. They accomplished much as Emi had learned over the years. It was a simple way of saying that such flatteries might lead to a physical hobby in the future but would not effect her business decisions. If there was one thing that a runic professor had to do it was separate the work and the personal. Especially after making the mistake of becoming physically involved with a magi lab rat those years ago, it was not something she was going to do again easily. Emotional attachment would only be saved for after she retired. So there would be no batting of those pleasant brown eyes that would have Em changing her views on University matters or dealings.
Second, it tended to unconsciously put Emiko on a higher rung in the conversational ladder. Especially with hetero ladies. The idea of a compliment evolving into a sexual inquiry had at times left the straightest of lasses a bit frazzled. It was a curve ball they hadn't seen coming for some peculiarly humorous reasons. They were straight so the person they were talking must be as well. It was fun to chip realism into that bubble of theirs. But not forget that if the female was bi in the very least, it insinuated that Em would be the most dominate since she was the first to bring up the possibility of physical matters first. Would that be realistic if matters came to pass? A glance to the whip hanging from Elise's belt made such inquiries a touch blurred and not as solidified as they usually were. This was no wall flower or soft spoken book nerd. Regardless of what came to pass, those two sentences had tended to work well for Emiko in the past. Here was hoping they'd work well for her here.
"I would not at all. I've actually been craving Pad Thai myself." The smirk and layered levels of meaning were washed away as the server had walked their way over. In smooth and graceful motions, almost that of a geisha from her home country, Emiko would pull off her winter coat and drape it over the back of her stool. That is, of course, after giving the stool a quick wipe down with a cloth she never left the condo without. The woman had indeed grown out of her more intense germaphobic phase (luckily for her it had just been a phase) back in her early twenties but old habits died hard.
Emiko would sit properly into the stool across from this Ms Argent, crossing her legs at the ankles with a delicate formality. "Yes, I'm not familiar with this locale but I'd like Pad Thai, I'd like it hot and I'd like a glass of water with lime wedges instead of lemon." The server would nod as her pencil hurried upon her notepad. "And a cup of coffee would be lovely too if this location offers it." As the server nodded after jotting down the customer's wishes Em would offer the worker a polite smile. "Thank you." And with that, the two were left alone again.

[attr="class","oho"] oh darling, just let me hear you scream it makes your voice so much sweeter. [attr="class","monalisa"]Elise's smile widened at Emiko's response. The good doctor was getting more and more interesting by the moment. She was determined that flattery wouldn't affect their business, but she was still open to the flirtation. It could prove to be a fun diversion, even if it didn't get her anywhere with the University. The woman was attractive, and she was used to getting her way. She could be quite fun, indeed. The stubborn ones always were. She would have to shelf that idea for a later time, when she had time to have fun. It was a challenge of a different sort, separate from business. Although Elise loved mixing a little business with pleasure, it wasn't always wise.
She watched with the same smirk fixed in place as Emiko sat down, and Elise turned her attention to the older woman who was beginning to make the dishes, filling the air with the scent of peanuts and noodles. She kept her legs a little separate in an unconscious display of power. It was a way of saying she had nothing to hide, and nothing to hide from. True or not, she radiated confidence in a quiet way, not needing to beat anyone over the head with it. She had her reputation, and most of her associates were respectful as a result.
Admittedly, she didn't get Thai as much as she would like, but she was never opposed to trying something new every now and again, especially if it was a place in the neighborhood where she did business. But Emiko seemed to know her way around Thai, since she had personalized her dish. Interesting. It was just another piece of the puzzle, like the cloth she'd used to wipe off her seat.
Pulling off her gloves by the middle finger, she laid them on the table top as the woman put the water in front of her. The glass was cold against her fingertips, but she didn't pick it up just yet. She would save it for her meal, in case the boat noodles were more spicy than she was guessing they would be.
"So, tell me, Dr. Inoue," she said, using the title as a gesture of respect, "Have you come here today with any changes in our usual operations? I was under the impression that the University was satisfied with our current arrangement."
Down to business, of course. Perhaps she gave up an inch or two by starting business first, but she wasn't going to play coy, either. She liked to get the talking business out of the way, so that she could return to her more urgent pursuits.

Those scarlet eyes would glance over the rims of her glasses at the hearing of her properly articulated title. "No no no. Nothing of the sort." The young woman would answer as she exchanged a polite smile with the slave driver. Raising her chin after she had decided her blouse had been corrected of any flawed restings of the silken ruffles, Emiko would fold her hands appropriately within her lap. "The purpose of this meeting is solely for professional courtesy accounts."
Manicured fingers would lace interwovenly upon the fabric of her pencil skirt delicately. "With the passing of hands, this is to assist with the transition process so you, as one of our esteemed business partners, can more easily feel both comfortable and confident with the new face you'll be conducting business with. Me." The smile grew an inch with a measure of self pleased finesse and gentle tilt of the head. "Other than just reestablishing the sort of merchandise we are asking you to keep an eye out for, nothing else is needed of this particular meeting from our side of matters. So it can be as short or lengthy as you wish it to be."
The professor had finished her thoughts just in time as the drinks were brought over. Emiko would offer the waitress polite eye contact as she held a hand out for her precious liquid caffeine. "If it's possible, you could feel free to charge me however much it is for a pot and just leave it here. This is probably a presumptuous request but I'll be saving you alot of trips over. Believe me." The waitress would shrug in compliance, a strange mix of appreciation and annoyance. "You'll see appreciation in the tip. I know I can be particular." The levels of appreciation rose at the mention of financials which was showcased in a warm smile. "Thank you." Em would nod back before returning her attention to her beverages.
"But yes, as I was saying," Emiko would say as she began to squeeze the lime into her water glass. "The University is pleased with how arrangements have been conducted in the past. So with this partnership now within my hands I don't see a need to change anything if it's working just as well for you as it is us. If you have any concerns you may feel free to bring them up now or at a later time if you'd like." The professor would state as she stirred the iced water with the available bendy straw so as to more thoroughly flavor her chilled drink.
"It's a partnership for a reason. I'll take the time to listen to any concerns you may have. So," Em would shrug slightly as she pushed her water glass to the side so as to center the main star of the show. The coffee, with not a drop of cream or particle of sugar, would be risen up to her painted lips to linger long enough for an inhale so as to appreciate the scent. "Do you have anything you'd like to inquire of before I reinforce what we're asking you to keep an eye out for?"

[attr="class","oho"] oh darling, just let me hear you scream it makes your voice so much sweeter. [attr="class","monalisa"]Nothing escaped Elise's notice, from the particular care she took in ordering to the bribery that she utilized to ensure she got her way. This was a woman after Elise's own heart. Perhaps she was a little too fussy about what she looked like, but the effort had certainly yielded results. She looked too high class for this neighborhood, which would be a magnet to any pickpockets in the area, but something told Elise that anyone who tried to do something like that would end up regretting it. Rune users were far more formidable than they looked, especially the ones who were high up in the University hierarchy. And besides, she certainly had impeccable manners, and she knew her business well enough to be completely calm when conducting it. This was no novice in stressful situations.
"If I have questions," she said, a smile on her lips, "They can wait until afterward."
She took a sip of the ice water she had ordered, leaning into the counter and resting her elbows there on the edge of the table. Her chin rested on the heel of her hand as she tilted her hand, watching Emiko as if she was a fascinating new television program. Attracted as she might have been, Elise liked to know what to expect from people. Typically, that meant that she would spend the early part of their acquaintance watching, and sometimes strategically prodding at the new person, until she knew what she could expect of them. Anticipating the actions of other people was the bread and butter of her trade, whether it was in capturing and training slaves or matching them to buyers. Her business associates received the same level of scrutiny, if not a little more.
The food arrived shortly afterward, and Elise looked down at the fork and spoon. She'd halfway expected chopsticks, but then again, what did she really know about this kind of food. Twirling a noodle around her fork, she took a small bite. The flavor was bolder than she'd been expecting, but thankfully it wasn't spicy. She ate the next bite with a little more enthusiasm, before switching to a spoon to enjoy the soup broth.
She glanced over to Dr. Inoue, wondering whether she would be satisfied with the food, or whether she would try to send it back. She was finicky enough that it wouldn't have surprised Elise either way, but she knew that it could be problematic in a business partner, if they got upset when things didn't go exactly as they had expected.

One sip turned into two which turned into three. Em sighed through her nose at the hot caffeine entering her system. No, it wasn't up to her usual high standard. This wasn't a high end brew. There was no price tagged story of how these beans were expertly chosen from the highest peaks of whatever mountains by a native people.
No. This was cheap drip coffee made with an average auto coffee maker. And where the taste may have caused a slight wrinkling of her nose upon the first experiencing of it, she hadn't exactly gone into asking for a pot lightly. Emiko hadn't had delusions of grandeur over the quality she had purchased. So regardless of its lesser realms of coffee-ness, Em had near consumed the entirety of her first cup before she officially set it back onto the table.
Only then, after smiling with a soft sense of relief to have finally gotten her caffeine, Emiko glanced across the table. A small momentary pause would occur. The woman had dismissed the offered business topic of conversation to trade it in for a silent staring. It wasn't startling persay, but silently a touch awkward perhaps? The corners of Em's mouth inched upwards in amusement at the humorous conversational situation as she reached over to refill her mug. Seemed the other had said all she wished to at the moment. This meal was going to be a jooooy.
"Thank you." Emiko offered the waitress who was kind enough to interrupt the silence with the bringing them their food. And the smile would eventually twist into a smirk lightly dripping with sour. Fork. Really? Reaching her hand around to her hanging coat's right pocket Em pulled out a small pouch. Padding the pouch onto the palm of her hand a pair of collapsible chopsticks landed in them. Etheans could eat the way they wished to. Opening the eating utensils fully Emi expertly used them to pick up her first bite full.
Chew ... chew chew chew ...
Emiko glanced down to the plate in front of her in slight disbelief. Swallow. It was delicious. Her entire mouth was on fire, that's how you knew they were preparing it right. "... this really is a hole in the wall place, isn't it?" A genuine smile spread across her painted lips as she went in to collect a larger amount, pinched between two chopsticks.

[attr="class","oho"] oh darling, just let me hear you scream it makes your voice so much sweeter. [attr="class","monalisa"]Elise smiled as Emiko tried the food, watching the surprise and then pleasure make its way across her expression. It seemed that the food met with her approval, which wasn't surprising. Tiny privately-owned restaurants often had the best food, much better than the corporation-run chain stores that all had a formula that they followed for cooking their food. The smaller businesses relied on their store for their livelihood, and that meant that they worked harder at making sure that they got everything right. Besides, it was as authentic as you could get without traveling outside of Ethea, since the cooks usually came from the countries where the type of cuisine was from.
Satisfied with her business partner's taste and lack of pickiness, she continued eating her own dish. It was delicious, Elise had to admit. Perhaps it wasn't some fancy restaurant in downtown Felici, but what it lacked in class, it more than made up for in taste. She ate quickly, though no one could have commented negatively about her manners, as she kept a napkin handy to clean her mouth if it got messy. The impression was important, especially when it came to meeting with business partners. No one could ever accuse Elise of being unaware of her appearance.
Once Elise had finished her meal, she was ready to get back down to business. Get the show on the road, so that she could attend to her other business matters. A full stomach often made for a more agreeable partner anyway.
"Now," she said, putting her mostly empty glass of water on the bar, "just to be clear, are there any new types of merchandise that you're looking for, or have my associates been providing what you're looking for?"
It was bland business-speak, code that anyone would overhear and not know anything about what they were discussing. But more than that, it was how Elise saw her line of work. Her slaves were nothing but commodities, and her mercenaries business associates. This was the boring part of the job, the part that she would have delegated if she trusted anyone enough to do a business deal right. It was in training slaves that she found more joy.

[attr="class","litags"]Thank you for your patience, just as always <3 [attr="class","licred"]// NOVA // | [attr="class","libody"]So thrilled Emiko was over having a traditional Ikigain meal she had honestly not really noticed the speed of which her table companion ate her own. Em glanced over at the sound of hearing Ms Argent's voice. The inquiry was one she was thankful to hear. With chopsticks being lowered to the side of her still semi-full plate Em would lift up one painted nail as she continued to chew the currentl mouthful. Just a short moment was all that was being asked for. To assist with matters the professor would take a sip of her lime water before patting her mouth gingerly. Not a single bit of evidence of her red lipstick was left behind on the napkin. Gods, good quality makeup was a blessing.
"No new specimens from what we've inquired of in the past," Emiko answered simply. Pregnant magi. The Headmaster seemed to never have enough fetuses for his experiments. Fetuses, fetuses, fetuses. Em paused a moment to drink from her coffee mug. Year ago this conversation would have set the professor trembling in horror at the actions her body had no choice but to answer. Now? Her hands and facial features remained seemingly calm, not a hiccup or disturbed twitch in sight. It wasn't the slave driver's fault that pregnant magi were more a rarity than not. Emi herself had had to go fishing for such specimens herself in order to harvest what was asked for. Em doubted the woman in the seat beside her would hide such merchandise from the University.
Pregnant magi and any magi considered a peculiarity. "Have you come across any rarities that I might be persuaded in purchasing as well?" Em would ask in between drinks. Not much longer would the cup be emptied and in need of refilling once again. When the professor had purchased the pot it seemed to not have been done foolishly. At this rate, the pot would be emptied in its entirety before Emiko would take her leave of the establishment. As the entrepreneur who granted Em her presence answered, Emiko would listen. Eye contact remained only allowing it to break for momentary downward glances to gather up another mouthful with her chopsticks.

[attr="class","monalisa"]"Not at this time," Elise answered carefully, tapping her nails once on the counter top. "But I expect to have a number of new acquisitions within the week. The usual order should be delivered by Wednesday."
No savvy business woman would admit not having what the customer wanted, but Elise made a point of being honest with her clients, knowing that lying was bad for business. But pregnant Magi were easy enough to come by, if only because she didn't often separate her stock by gender, and desperate people had passions that ran high. Not to mention the fact that even if she had separated them by gender, there were plenty of Magi that switched back and forth. It was a much more simple solution than simply looking for Magi who were already pregnant. Leave that to the University, whose information network extended to more institutional regions, like local hospitals.
Even so, it was the "rarities" that the University was always asking after. In her mind, there wasn't really such a thing as a rarity. She could find any kind of Magi, if she knew where to look. Even so, perhaps there were some that were more common than others. Air Magi tended to be of the winged variety, whereas fire Magi seemed to have commonly predatory characteristics. They were a dime a dozen, really. Water Magi seemed the most varied, if only because they took after any aquatic animal that one could think of, and there were quite a lot of fish out there.
But she wasn't the kind to give away exactly how "rare" her merchandise was, because it gave her more wiggle room in negotiating.
"I'm afraid that I have to be returning to my work," she said, giving her a small smile. "I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. You have my contact information if you need anything. Anything at all."
The smile that accompanied those words suggested that she meant something more than a simple business exchange, but she said nothing further. Instead, she extended her hand for a last hand shake, and would shake Emiko's hand if the gesture was returned. Either way, she headed deeper into the market, disappearing into the crowd.
