“Fancy flips and parkour are more my speciality.” Cautiously, Shinzu extended his finger. He half expected what was to come, but unfortunately, had too little of a window to withdraw the gesture. “Gyah!” Shinzu pulled back instantly and inspected his finger. His own lightning-fast reflexes helped in reducing the damage from a chunk of missing flesh to just a deep scratch that oozed in blood. He was beginning to feel a tinge of fear. “I guess I can’t be friendly with her.” He thought to himself as the owl’s figure became shrouded in some sort of wispy substance. “Jokes on you. I have a calorie controlled sugar-free diet, so I bet I taste awful!”
As much as Shinzu wanted to keep yelling, he was forced into submission as the owl dove right through him and left behind a harsh series of screams in the air. “Damn it…” He cursed as he protected his ears with the palm of his hands. Unfortunately, despite the defensive gesture, his heightened hearing did mean that his ears still picked up on a hefty portion of the booming sounds. “This is bad. This entire situation is dangerous.” He thought to himself as he removed his hands and turned around to gaze at the owl’s new form. Quite worryingly, despite the voice originating from right behind him, it sounded quite faint and distant. Clearly, his ears had been damaged slightly.
“Like I said. Your dear Oppy wouldn’t enjoy me very much. No taste and all skin and bones.” Shinzu shot his tormentor a nervous smile. “And yet… How intriguing.” Despite the looming danger, he couldn’t help but admire the throne that the veiled entity sat on. “I wonder what those bones originally belonged to… And what the heck is a Oppy?” Shinzu tapped his chin. The intricate words engraved onto the bones also sparked interest. With all the brainpower he could muster, he concentrated on a couple of the words with more intricate designs and attempted to memorise them. If he could get out of this nightmare alive, then he wanted to look them up at the University's library.
“My apologies.” Shinzu politely bowed to show that his apology contained sincerity. The smile on his face, however, was still plastered on strongly to show a hit of defiance. “Choose my words carefully? Alright. I can do that.” Shinzu raised his head slightly. Out of respect, he was still bowing. His legs were, however, tensed and ready to leap out of harm’s way in a moment’s notice should his words fail to please the shadowy God. “If I have your permission, may I suggest a game? Give me a challenge that isn’t impossible. Something to test my wits. If I fail to please you, I will accept any punishment of your choosing. If I succeeded, all I ask is you consider sharing some of your wisdom with me. Unanswered questions always make me feel dirty inside.” At the end of his sentence, Shinzu shot Oppy a confident smile as if to say that he wasn’t going to get eaten any time soon. Somehow, the young student felt as if this act of cockiness would entertain the shadowy figure and convince her to accept the deal. At least, that’s what he hoped. From what he could gather, she seemed like the type that enjoyed challenges and despised monotony. “Which means… If she agrees, I have to be prepared. The challenge will probably be nothing like all the trials up until now.”

Welcome to your
A scowl of a thousand sharklike teeth would appear on Her visage at the tone of Shinzu’s voice. A circle of impossible darkness would radiate from underneath Shinzu’s feet, and equally black tendrils would emerge from it, lashing at Shinzu. Oh, his reaction time and abilities would see him free for a time, were he quick enough to dodge them. But the tendrils multiplied until they were impossible to avoid. One would lash around his ankle and yank him violently upwards, until he was dangling in front of Nevyne, Her face mere inches from his. Her features were now visible to the hunter, and they did not form a happy face. Her eyes glowed a deep orange color, and Opgraven’s changed to match Hers.
“Yes, my dear Oppy,” she sneered. “He doesn’t like your tone, and neither do I, dear Shinzu. Perhaps you’re not as bright as I had thought.” Her features softened into a sad look of disappointment and she leaned back onto the armrest of the throne, leaning her cheek into the back of her hand. “Perhaps you want to donate your soul for His next meal? Tired of the cycle? Feeling charitable?”
She laughed to herself and lifted her head from her hand. She leaned towards the dangling Hunter’s face until her eyes were inches from his. He could see universes within her orange gaze; were they really other plains? Or were they other dreams? It was hard for Shinzu to say for certain. What was clear was that they were not friendly eyes.
“Because that’s the only reason I can see for taking on such a disrespectful tone.” She pulled her head back to lean against her throne once more, finger tapping lazily on the armrest. “Now, I’m sure He will forgive you if you apologize for your mocking tone, ahuhuhu~”
The tendril around him would then lift him higher, until he could see Opgraven’s humanlike teeth directly in front of him. There was no breath, nor sound, nor movement that could be detected. If he would apologize, and it would have to be sincere, the being would blink once, and the tendril would lower Shinzu to the ground once more, where he could continue his line of thought, if he wished.
“Wonderful; now, once more, I warn you to choose your words carefully,” She said. No longer was there an angry tone in Her voice, but She did sound less… enthusiastic than before. “If you weren’t such an… intriguing… mortal, I would not entertain such mercy. Neither would Kalidas, if she were to be… enlightened regarding your actions as of late.” She ended the sentence with a sinister laugh, implying that it was not just an idle musing, but a subtle promise.
And so if he would continue with his apology and request, She would listen, wondering what the mortal was getting at. Ah, yes, games; She did so enjoy them, but what She didn’t enjoy was the arrogance of mortals; creating games, and deciding the prizes for both outcomes. What She did see, however, was an opportunity. But first, She had to set him straight; mortals like him were fun, but She would not tolerate disrespect of any sort.
“You will accept whatever I deem fit to give you,” She said, Her voice as cold as a Fokradiin winter. “Do not talk as though you have a voice in the matter.” She rest her head upon Her hand, and twirling the other lazily, causing some bones to rise from her throne and dance with her movements. “No, Shinzu. I am bored of this game. But if it’s a test of wits you wish, then I shall grant you this, for I am a gracious goddess.”
Without taking Her eyes from the little dancing patterns of small bones She was controlling, She continued. “It’s a very simple test; only one question! Really rack your brain for this one!”
“Why did I show you all of this?” She said. Her words were punctuated by a sweeping gesture which fanned the bones out in front of her, like a deck of cards. The gesture covered the university, the forest, and the silhouette of the arena-like structure in the distance. “Oh, and if you say that you don’t know, you won’t be waking up in the morning.”

A cold shudder ran up Shinzu’s spine as the foggy figure revealed rows of spiny shark-like teeth. Even at this distance, he could feel them almost hovering just above his skin and lusting for a gory bite. “I-I’ve made a mistake…” He thought to himself as he realised that his cocky attitude had actually had the opposite effect on the tormentor. “Time for another tactical retreat!” As shadows began to emanate from below his feet, Shinzu immediately decided to leap away and then dodge the oncoming tendrils in a brilliant display of acrobatics. Eventually, however, the tendrils became too many and his stamina too short. He was now a trapped flightless bird.
“Ugh…” He thought to himself as he hung helplessly upside down. After a mere few moments, Shinzu could feel the blood pressing violently against his skull. “Cycle?” Shinzu thought back to Irilys’s words about rebirth and past-lives. Was this demoness suggesting that being devoured by her dear Oppy would lead to a fate worse than death? “M-My apologies.” He swallowed all the moisture in his mouth as the shadowy figure leaned closer. For a moment, Shinzu’s heart skipped a beat. Fear was consuming him. At least, it was until he looked into her eyes. “What is that?” Beyond the unfriendly expression, the young student spotted glimpses of something. Worlds? Universes? Instantly, all the fear and terror left him. Even if they were mere illusions, his curiosity was beginning to get the better of him. Carefully, he analysed the scenes before him in wonderment and awe.
“Ahem… I apologise to the both of you for my tone. It will not happen again.” A combination of the shadowy creature’s voice and her pulling her head back snapped Shinzu back into reality. He was then pulled higher until he was making eye contact with Oppy’s teeth. A much less exciting display than before. “M-My sincerest apologies! I did not intend to hint at any disrespect!” While apologising, Shinzu clasped his hands together in front of his face as if to beg for mercy. He’d rather have bowed before the creature, but unfortunately, being hung upside down made that action quite impossible. “Neither would Kalidas?” The young student repeated the words in his mind. “Kalidas finds me entertaining!?” With all his might, Shinzu held back a grin and kept it well-hidden under his apologetic expression. It wasn’t enough to hear from Irilys that he had nothing to fear from Kalidas for being a Magi supporter. To hear it from this shadow creature too, however, seemed to further emphasize the fact that he wasn’t quite on her ‘naughty’ list yet.
“And the way she refers to Kalidas so casually… She definitely knows her personally.” Shinzu perked up. Even his eyes seemed to light up slightly with enthusiasm. Whether the shadowy God intended to or not, she had just given the mortal a very valuable piece of information. All he had to do now was to regain her favour. “Your wish is my command. I’ll accept any challenge you wish to give to me and will attempt to redeem myself for my transgressions.” Cautiously, Shinzu made sure that his tone was neutral as he dropped to the ground. He didn’t want to risk confidence being mistaken as cockiness or arrogance.
As the conversation went on, Shinzu perked up at the mention of a test of wits. “I thank you for your kindness.” His words were sincere and not forced. Somehow, the earlier mention of Kalidas had put him in a good mood. “I can’t be too casual or friendly with her. But, I can’t brown nose her either. I doubt she’d find me as entertaining if I allowed myself to stoop that low.” Shinzu scratched his chin. He wasn’t going to overthink it. Despite all these transgressions, this God still had some interest in him. If he did anything outside of his character, then it could possibly cause more harm than good.
“Okay, let’s do this.” He thought to himself as he carefully watched the bits of bone dance under the God’s control. “She’s making me focus on them…” He thought to himself as his eyes darted from bone to bone. His eyes then locked onto the shadowy hand and followed it as it made a sweeping gesture. “Interesting.” He thought to himself. “I enjoy thinking, but I don’t want to bore you or make you wait. If I have your permission, I will just say my thoughts out loud.” Shinzu then paused to wait for a response. Of course, he had the bad habit of thinking out loud anyway. Part of him did realise, however, that the God would appreciate her input and permission being so valued.
“I believe your question has a deeper symbolic meaning. Beyond the display of your power to control these bones, or rather life itself, you want me to say what kind of an impact this world of yours has had on me. What meaning it has to me and whether I appreciate it or not. The forest from earlier… Likely personifies the path I am walking down. How, I won’t allow myself to diverge from it even if I try to walk in the opposite direction. The owls, probably represented knowledge. All the knowledge I’ve been collecting while on that path. The coliseum, which the path lead towards… Likely represents the unavoidable battles I will face. Was it to prepare me for those fights? Or perhaps even, to make me doubt myself? Can I defeat those that are faster, tougher and smarter than I? Regardless of what I was meant to feel, the answer is yes, I will face them head on. A thousand times yes. The visions you showed me and how I reacted was proof of that. I am not so cold and heartless that my friend’s deaths would have no effect on me. I have the passion and will to create a better world for them. However, I am also not so weak that the image of their deaths would deter me and cause me to cower before the injustices of the world. I believe that’s what you wanted to see from me at that moment. Would I show you that all this means so little to me that I’d have no reaction before the visions, or would it mean so much that the mental breakdown would destroy me and crush my dreams? Hopefully, I proved that neither is who I am.
Beyond that, I feel that it is obvious you morphing into Kalidas was to personify my fear of her wrath. Why though? In my opinion, I feel that a simple chase scene wouldn’t be enough to entertain you. You wanted more. Perhaps to see how I’d react to that day of judgement I fear so very much arriving so soon. You wanted to see, would I beg and cower for mercy? Or run and fight on even if the odds were against me. The path splitting was also a representation of that choice. Would I make use of my environment to escape Kalidas’s clutches or would I sacrifice the lives of others to slow her down? I believe I made the right choice there… Though of course, ‘Kalidas’ lost interest and went after the innocents anyway. Perhaps to show me that I can’t possibly save everyone. Then the University. Why that? Of course, you wanted to see how much would I give up for the pursuit of knowledge. For an easy solution to all my problems. The response to that didn’t require much thought on my part. I’d never make myself a slave to the University. Never a slave to the Hunter’s Guild either for that matter.”
Shinzu began to wheeze at the end of his long speech. He was meticulous in his detail. So much so that he almost lost track of one last thing. “In my state of overzealousness, I may have also forgotten my place in the grand scheme of things. The concept of Gods is fascinating to a mortal. It is of course, by your mercy that we are allowed to exist. I believe this form you took is to remind me of that and the display with the bones was to further reiterate how much power you hold and what could happen to me or the rest of humanity if we allowed pride of arrogance to blind us. We can take lives too. Even destroy the world and make it void of all life through wars and conflict. Of course, that still pales in comparison to what you or the other Gods can achieve without even lifting a finger.” At the end of his sentence, Shinzu respectfully waited for an answer. Whether the God noticed it or not, his eyes were brimming with excitement. He didn’t look like a man who had just answered a question that would determine whether he lived or died. To the contrary, he simply looked like an excited buffoon that was curious to hear what sort of feedback a being of a higher plane would have to his rationale and thinking.

Welcome to your
“Much better,” She cooed to the mortal. Her threatening demeanor shifted immediately to a sugary-sweet smile. At least he wasn’t quite that disrespectful. And the way he begged in front of Opgraven, too! How delightful! She pet the minor god’s leg as Shinzu was set back onto the ground. She wouldn’t have hesitated to kill him; entertaining mortals could be found elsewhere, but She enjoyed his babbling, and the position he was in on the mortal plane.
“Oh, I doubt it,” She said to his question about Kalidas. That stiff bitch barely knew how to let loose. “Rather, you are simply under Her radar, for now. No, make no mistake; She will eviscerate you once she discovers what you’ve been doing, and what you’re planning.”
She ended with a laugh and then shifted which leg was crossed over the other. With Her elbow on Her throne and Her cheek resting against Her fist, She listened. And listened. Aaaand listened. Her bored expression would not stop the man, She knew. He was more like the owl than he knew. Fortunately for him, he ran out of breath before She decided to kill him just to make him stop. When he finished, She yawned, and tapped Her chin in thought.
“Very well,” She said. “That will suffice. Well done.” The childlike amusement in Her tone was gone. She sat upright and folded Her hands in Her lap. She smirked; oh, no doubt he wanted more from Her; enlightenment, opinions… but She was not irilys. It was time to move forward, or he would go on forever. Perhaps Her response would disappoint him; She cared not. After Her next offer, She was certain he would realize what worshipping Her could bring.
“I have other things to attend to,” She said, jumping up from the throne and landing in a perfect, gymnastic dismount just in front of him. She extended a hand. “But as you have won the game, and because I am gracious enough to overlook your recent transgressions, I will grant you a gift! Come; name a person. Any person at all. And I will show you their dream. Even Irilys cannot give you this opportunity!”

Shinzu raised an eyebrow at the God’s sugary expression. He couldn’t help but muse over the contrasting personality between her and Irilys. While the owl deity seemed to value courage and inner strength, this one seemed to enjoy watching others submit their mind, body and soul to her. “I wonder how many others ended up as Oppy’s breakfast.” Shinzu shuddered at the thought. “R-Really!?” The young student’s jaw almost dropped at the mention of Kalidas. Apparently, he wasn’t as safe as he first assumed. “Thank you for that piece of knowledge.” The young student thanked her for the information. He didn’t want the shadow-God to feel like the gesture had gone unappreciated. “I guess I’m going to have to be more careful from now on…”
Luckily, despite the depressing topic, Shinzu couldn’t help but regain his composure and smile by the time he was done with his long-winded speech. As he regained his breath, he smiled with glowing anticipation. What would this nightmarish creature think of his words? Would she be pleased? How would Oppy react? As Shinzu glanced at the duo, he attempted to fill the tense silence by analysing both of their reactions. Oppy appeared to have no change in his reaction. Then again, his spectrum of reactions was probably vastly limited anyway due to mostly just being a set of giant teeth with legs. As for the God… “Oh great. I’m going to die.”
The thumping in Shinzu’s chest grew more noticeable by the second. Even if he wasn’t devoured by Oppy’s maw, his overworked heart was probably going to give in any moment now. “I’ve bored her. I’ve bored her! How is this possible… Everyone loves my speeches. Sure they can be long-winded- but that’s the beauty of them! Who doesn’t love listening to an audio book? I underestimated her. She’s immune to my charm… To think such a thing was possible!” After his inner monologue, Shinzu prepared to drop onto his knees and beg for forgiveness one last time. Before he could even bend his knees, however, the God’s voice would grab his attention and stop him from carrying out the action.
“I… Did it!?” Somehow, the demoness accepted the answer. “She’s a dangerous one… Once I return to the mortal realm I’m going to have to start praying more to… Who is she anyway?” Shinzu pondered over the facts. A goddess of nature likely, as suggested by the owl-form she took on earlier. She also clearly had control over spirits, or at least the ability to devour them anyway. The shadowy form and tentacles from earlier also appeared to be some form of magic. Which mean that she was… “Arithelia!?” Shinzu swallowed. Had he just spent all this time with the mother of Magi? “The legends didn’t mention how short tempered she is… Perhaps she is kinder to Magi?”
As Shinzu pondered over the thought for a few more moments, Arithelia’s words snapped him back into reality. “O-Of course! I will not keep you any longer. A mere mortal such as myself did not deserve to have even a moments worth of your time, and yet you allowed me to have so and visit your realm even. You have my most sincere gratitude.” Shinzu bowed politely before shifting his attention to Arithelia’s offer. “I am unworthy, but it would be rude to not accept your gift. If it pleases you…” The young student dove deep into his heart. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. What would he use this offer on? “…Could you allow me to peer into the Headmaster’s dream, please?” Shinzu didn’t state which dream exactly. He worried that specifics would annoy Arithelia. As long it was one of the Headmaster’s, he was satisfied. Even more so if it gave him even the slightest hint about his goals or motivation.

Welcome to your
She tapped the corner of Her grin. Well, this one certainly did understand how to grovel; a skill unfortunately few mortals seemed to possess in this age. And such an interesting choice, as well; oh, no wonder the Owl was so interested in this one; he was so much like Him, though not nearly as boring. He did talk more than She liked, though. She gave a slight nod.
“Headmaster Von Kaiser, is it? Quite the bold choice! I approve. Yes, that could certainly be arranged. Though you may learn less than you hope. Come along, then.”
She turned away from the mortal to the tall throne. With a wave of Her hand in a slow arc, the throne shifted, opened, turning into a skeletal archway. She stepped forward through it and beckoned him to follow with a forward curl of her finger. It would appear to be a black void, and yet they would walk as if they were on a solid, invisible platform. Ahead was a shimmering circle, a wobbling, reflective pool that looked like a liquid rainbow, standing upright to act as a door. She dipped her head into it, and pulled back with a smile.
“Ohhh, this is my favorite past life of his! Come on through when you’re ready.”
With no further instruction, she jumped through the shimmering gateway with a girlish giggle. Nothing would happen if Shinzu did not proceed. If he did, he would find that the shimmering portal was like passing through air, and the scenery around him would be much different.
It was a garage; a large one, full of heavy duty tools, multiple workbenches, and robotic limbs and chassis on various tables or hanging from racks. Old models, models one would not have seen for a long time; even someone who wasn’t a cybernetics expert could see that, like recognizing a car from the previous century. It was all exposed metal, rather than the synthetic skin so common in the modern day. The smell of oil and the sound of a welder sparking filled the room. A blonde woman in a welder’s mask was grafting a metal arm onto an otherwise incomplete chassis. She stopped only at the sound of a door creaking open and a bell chiming.
A door at the far wall opened, and another woman sauntered in; her movements were smooth as water but clearly made to accentuate her … assets. Shinzu would recognize her as the goddess, but not quite; Oppy was no longer on her head, and she seemed more… human, at least, as human as a flawlessly beautiful entity could be. A black tank top and matching booty shorts contrasted beautifully with her pale skin (and there was lots of it on display.) The blonde woman lifted her welding mask, obviously entranced by the dark-haired seductress.
Suffice to say, there was no small amount of flirting, innuendo, and light touching between the two ladies. The blonde one took the lead, boasting and bragging, and generally giving off an easygoing attitude. Nevyne smiled and laughed along, encouraging her to continue talking about various things; her work on cybernetics was the main focus, encouraged to go on into theories and details of actual work as the object of her desires seemed to be following the conversation with no problem.
Their conversation led them to the project she was working on before the welcome interruption. The blonde woman, who apparently went by “Aly,” was convincing a playfully shy Nevyne (Or Nevvy, as she introduced herself earlier) to take her hand at the welding torch. This, of course, led to Aly taking a “hands on” approach with guiding Nevvy’s hands… and soon after, the rest of her. Fortunately (Or perhaps unfortunately?) for Shinzu, the dream faded to black before things could get hotter than a shower of sparks, leaving him standing in a void once more.
Nevyne materialized from a black fog behind him, a wistful sigh escaping her lips.
“I don’t much care for the man, but that particular life of his is entertaining, at the very least.” And no doubt Shinzu would want to ask a million questions, both about the scene and the personal comments she made of the headmaster. She would put a finger to his lips if he did so, with a playful “Shhhshshshhhshh…”
She smiled. “Perhaps if I hear your prayers at my shrine, I will give you more answers. But for now, I think it’s time you woke up, don’t you?”
And with a clap of her hands, Shinzu would find himself jolting awake wherever he last slept, the gentle whispering of rain outside the only other sound in the night.
