Welcome to your
Oh, good! I was hoping to see this interesting fellow once more. He always has the most vivid nightmares! A hunter sworn to Kalidas, but a worshipper of Irilys. Hum, and where am I, in this? I think it’s about time our friend Shinzu here paid more respect to other gods, other than that boring owl and serious huntress, wouldn’t you say, Opgraven? Ahuhu~
The sky is a gentle lilac color, with long clouds covering it entirely. Shinzu would find himself surrounded by mountain, in from of a small, thin copse of perfectly-vertical pine trees. Ahead of him was a beautifully-laid brick path, and in the distance, a grand structure, made of marble and white stone, larger than the hunter’s guild and university. From here, it looked like a courthouse, or a grand library, or perhaps a famous Surajan school of enlightenment. Either way, he would have to walk, and he would not be alone.
The tree branches would be populated with owls, hooting low, never removing their eyes from the man. They were all sorts of species, and all sorts of colors. Sometimes they would fly in a group, but then shortly land once more to watch. Sometimes there would be rustling and movement in the sparse brush below, though never would he catch more than a shadow, and if he stepped off to inspect them, the owls would hoot and caw fervently until he returned to the path once more. Each bush, each tree trunk, each movement… Nobody would be there. And yet the shadows still flashed to the sides.
Nevyne took the form of one of these owls, pure black with white markings not unlike a suit. She would watch from the group, acting like the rest. At the end of the path, he would find the building to be much larger than expected. There were no people around, but the hundred steps led only to one entrance. Beyond heavy oak doors would be what could be described as an arena, like the ancient Fokradiin gladiators, or the old courts of Ikigai. And at the end of this long, sandy circle, would be a large and familiar owl, perched on a pedestal and being scratched by several large, golem-like servants.
The only owl who would follow from the trees, and perch high on the raised walls of the arena, would be the one of black and white.

The light of the new world pierced Shinzu’s iris. “Oh!” He yelled in excitement as he scooped himself off the floor and clapped merrily. Immediately, he noticed the odd lilac-hue of the sky. “Lilac – A symbol of love, strong friendship and innocence.” His eyes then drifted to the enormous pine trees surrounding the area. “Pine trees represent… Longevity, charisma and strength! My my, what a positive dream.” Shinzu always loved to jot down his dreams in his journal before analysing them with great detail. He found that it helped him better understand himself and the inner workings of his subconscious. For some reason he dared not question, however, he seemed to be able to psychoanalyse this dream while it was still playing out in his head. Perhaps, a dream within a dream?
“And in the distance…” Shinzu’s eyes followed a trail of bricks all the way to a grand display of architecture. Definitely a structure that could only exist in the dream of a imaginative creature. “Clearly, a trap!” Shinzu turned his back on the building and prepared to head into the opposite direction. Dreams were rarely so straight forward. If he was meant to be in that building, then he would have simply ‘jumped’ to that location. “Oh?” As the student stepped off the pathway, a symphony of hooting filed the air, as if to warn the dream’s host that he was making a grave mistake.
“How... Peculiar.” Something like this had never happened in his dreams before. Quite obviously though, the owl’s represented the great deity himself. “Perhaps a warning? Don’t stray from your true path?” Shinzu scratched his head as he made a U-turn and continued down the brick pathway towards the grand structure. Somehow, this seemed to please the avain shadows. “And yet, why do I still feel as if a giant monster is going to come hurtling out of that building?” Shinzu mused to himself as he continued down the pathway until at last, reaching a set of stairs which he attempted to arduously climb. “Even my dreams show no mercy despite my lack of real life stamina…”
If Shinzu made it to the top, he planned on pushing against the magnificent oak doors and peeking inside. Part of him, albeit half-expectedly, somehow sensed some kind of danger waiting to startle or jump scare him back into reality. "No, I must not let that happen. I wish to see how this dream will play out!"

Welcome to your
No jump scare would frighten Shinzu, nor would any monster leap at him. The arena-esque area would be empty, save for the twenty-foot tall form of Irilys, and his attendants. The owl did not move, but he locked his great eyes on Shinzu.
“Shinzu,” he would say. His voice would boom, the acoustics of the arena acting like a natural loudspeaker system. “No doubt you have determined that this is a dream. But it is not one without meaning. Come forward, and I shall show you.”
When Shinzu approached, or even if he stood still, the ground would shake gently as a square platform raised from the ground, sand spilling off it. It was larger than several stages put together, perfectly flat, made of marble, and projecting a foot from the sandy ground.
“Step on the stage, and we may both learn something this day.”
If he did so, when he stepped on the platform, a show would appear. Extremely realistic depictions of a familiar scene, though obviously an illusion, or a hologram. It would depict Cadence, Soak, Stoke, and Geno, in their little community center, talking and laughing around a fire, cooking something in a pot while others fiddled around the camp, preparing food or fixing things. Suddenly, a look of panic from them all. Hunters would emerge from behind a building, and gun everyone down. Shinzu saw a realistic scene; the children, bleeding and riddled with bullets. Cadence, doing her best to protect them, but ending up just like them. Geno would be taking down with a single shot to the chest. The screams, the cries, the shots; they were all unnervingly real. Any attempt to physically move in and stop the scene would fail, as he would phase through any person or building he touched.
Once everyone was dead, the scene would freeze.
“Hunters will find them,” Irilys would say. “They cannot be safe forever. Tell me, Shinzu; what do you feel is the best course of action to prevent this?”

Shinzu scowled as he peeked into the slit in-between the doorway. “Nothing but sand?” He always did love to outwit people. Due to this, dreams were especially important as they were the only real opportunity he had to outwit himself. “Let’s see what else this dream has to offer…” He muttered unenthusiastically as he pushed open the bulky door fully before taking a step inside the sandy arena. “W-Woah!” He exclaimed as he spotted a figure in the distance. “Lord Irilys!” Instinctively, he made a dash towards the deity in a manner that resembled someone that had just randomly come across an old friend after many years.
“Is this a vision? Or… Just a standard dream?” Shinzu didn’t know which option to believe in. Was Irilys’ humongous stature due to Shinzu’s subconscious both respecting and fearing the deity? Or was this simply the God’s true form? Either way, the student knew better than to pester Irilys with a bombardment of questions. “S-Sure.” He responded hesitantly before obeying Irilys’ command to step forward. The owl’s voice always was fearsome and powerful. This fact only seemed to hold twice as true whilst in the confines of the arena.
“Woah!” Suddenly a platform began to form underneath Shinzu. “You can control dreams?” Apparently, the deity’s power had no limits. “This show…” As the ground settled and stopped vibrating, Shinzu was allowed an opportunity to straighten his posture and relax his muscles as the so called play began. “Cadence? Soak? Stoke? Grumpy face?” The student crossed his arms and placed a hand on his chin as he studied the group carefully. “Why would Irilys show me-”
Shinzu’s jaw dropped. Forgetting the fact that these were just illusions and even more so, the fact that this was a dream, Shinzu yelled for dear life to warn his friends of the danger he had just spotted lurking in the shadows. “HUNTERS!” He yelled with so much force that it felt as if his vocal cords were on fire. “RUN!” He chanted. No matter the warnings, however, nothing could be done. “W-Why…” He stuttered weakly before falling on his knees. Everyone was dead, and he had just done nothing. “This truly is a nightmare…”
Irilys’s words would fall on deaf ears for a few moments. Shinzu was in shock. His eyes seemed to be glued to the frozen scene as his arms laid limply by his sides. It was as if his very soul had just left him. “T…The best course of… action?” Shinzu swallowed his fears and pushed the heaviness in his chest back. This was a test. “I’d…” He thought about his words carefully as he pulled himself up. Although, not before he pondered over something else first. “Irilys… Irilys has never been so open with giving away answers. The great deity’s knowledge is always reserved for those who ask first… Meaning… This truly is nothing more than a dream?”
Shinzu dusted himself off before giving the giant owl a glance. “It is… impossible to say. When will this vision become reality? A few days? A few years? If the timeframe to intervene is short…” Shinzu smiled. All this analysing seemed to be helping him regain his composure. “…Then I would evacuate the slums and take the Magi somewhere safer. Somewhere far away from the Hunter’s gaze. If I have years… Then I will-” The student paused for a moment. “I’ll find a way to reform the guild. I believe their existence is a necessity. A deterrent for Magi terrorists to pop up. Their methods, however, are too violent and they target without aim or purpose. The guild needs to become… peacekeepers. Only striking against those that break the law… And not innocent people who only wish to survive.”
Shinzu sighed at the end of his sentence. The image of his friends dying had clearly hit him quite hard. “If this is a dream. Why am I aware that I am dreaming? I have heard of lucid dreaming before, however, if I was lucid dreaming, I could never bring myself to conjure up those images…”

The Owl regarded Shinzu’s replies with silence and an unmoving, unblinking stare. He sat this way for many moments, before the scene faded entirely.
“Answers in due time, Shinzu,” he would say. “For now, we observe. Warn.”
At the last word, another scene rose up on the display. This time, an image of Shinzu was warning all of them, to good effect. They left the scene entirely. The buildings of Dagos flattened against the platform, and a new scene rose before them. This place was unfamiliar; it seemed to be in the mountains, near a large river. The walls and structure of the place were reminiscent of an old relocation camp, but it was distinctly transformed; the walls were covered in stone, dirt, and vines. Fire magi lit lamps. Water magi moved water from the river into a basin within the walls. People were dancing and singing.
There were familiar faces, too, but different. The same four; Cadence, the kids, and Geno, but they all seemed older by a few years. The peace, however, would not last. Day faded quickly to night, and a large detachment of hunters would approach, streaming down the mountains. They’d pass the walls quickly, and despite magi resistance, it would be another brutal massacre.
“Temporary, but ultimately fruitless,” the Owl would say. The scene would flatten. “Reform.”
This time, scenes would raise and flash before them, covering years in the span of a minute. They focused on Shinzu; there were images of him talking, to hunters and magi, to spending nights up researching things, to praying for guidance from Irilys, and seeking to curb the overly violent ways of hunters. He would argue with officers, and face distrust from his peers. The scenes slowed down to focus on Shinzu walking with a group of hunters in the woods. River walked next to him, and they seem to be engaged in communication. It would not last long, however. A pair of hunters behind them would raise their guns and shoot each of them in the back of the head, then again when they fell to the ground. The scene froze.
“Followers are few. You alone cannot change their ways from within. They are devoted.”
The Owl would silently consider any number of replies from Shinzu. His response would only be simply thus: “Do you truly wish to protect the Magi, Shinzu?”
The deep, short tone indicated he was looking for a simple answer from the man. Whether or not he would give one was up to him.

“Irilys isn’t enjoying himself.” Shinzu took note of the deity’s unmoving and stern demeanour. It seemed like a stark contrast to the Irilys he knew who melted into a ball of adorableness the moment he was scratched. Was Irilys that serious about this situation? If so, why the forced display of the golems? “I’ll keep things to myself for now.” Even if this was nothing more than a simple dream, it seemed like a detail that the student’s subconscious would not leave out. Either way though, the owl’s response about merely ‘observing’ and ‘warning’ seemed to push aside Shinzu’s doubts for the moment. “That seemed like something Irilys would say…”
Shinzu focused on the new scene intently, averting his eyes only when the familiar massacre would play itself out again. “How?” Shinzu’s voice was cold and analytical. Although he couldn’t bear to see the images of everyone’s deaths again, at last, he was beginning to see this situation for what it truly was. Not reality. “How were they found? We cannot dismiss the idea of running and hiding just yet. Perhaps the Magi just need to migrate further. Perhaps we just need to cover our tracks better. The Hunters can’t be everywhere. I know how the Guild works. I know how they track down targets and keep tabs on Magi. Their system isn’t perfect. The fact Magi slip past them on a daily basis is proof of that.”
Shinzu then focused his attention on the new scene. “Good.” He smiled at his efforts. Somehow, it instilled a sense of pride watching this doppelganger of his working so hard for this cause. “R-River!?” Shinzu’s strong demeanour was instantly broken. He could rather coldly watch himself die without the batter of an eyelid. River though? “Ugh…” He groaned as he chanted in his head. “Just a dream. Just a dream. Just a dream.” He then exhaled sharply, as if to release all the negativity in his heart. “Devoted? They are misguided.” The student took a moment to ponder over an appropriate change to the scene.
“I could… Perhaps, push the Guilds attention elsewhere. If the members are hunting something other than Magi, they’ll be happy. And if they are hunting, Kalidas will remain pleased. The only question is… What? Our world lacks dangers. Magi are the focus of everyone’s attention…” Shinzu sighed. Part of him wished that the earth would randomly split open one day and spew forth demons from the deepest depths of hell. At least that way, a common danger would be reason enough for Magi and Hunters to unite against a common foe.
“W-Why would you ask me that?” Shinzu froze for a moment. “Of course I wish to protect the Magi!” Was Irilys doubting Shinzu’s motivation? Or did the deity simply wish to hear how far Shinzu would go for this cause? Either way, he wasn’t going to back down. “Of course, you know me better than that. This isn’t simply about Magi. It is about injustice. Whether we are talking about Magi, humans or anything else, I want there to be peace! A world without mindless bloodshed!”

Welcome to your
As before, Irilys was silent when Shinzu spoke, reasoned, and explained. It was only when Shinzu said that he wished to protect them, the golems would stand still with their arms to their sides, and the great Owl would turn his head 180 degrees, to face directly away from Shinzu. Rather than the platform displaying scenes, the entire arena around them made a great grinding noise as the walls sank into the sand, kicking up dust and bits of stone. Nothing dangerous, and the structure did not crumble, but the dust it kicked up made it impossible to see.
The only sound that could be heard over the grinding of stone was a deep, guttural laugh. It started almost birdlike, before becoming a deep, hearty chuckle. Shinzu would not be able to see past the dust, but he could feel more vibrations in the ground, and perhaps see rising shadows around him in the shapes of trees. The laugh rose higher in pitch, slowly, until it became a distinctly feminine laugh.
It would be a full minute before the dust cleared, revealing forest instead of structure, grass and brush instead of sand. Irilys’s head was still turned away from Shinzu. A small black and white owl was perched atop one of the golems. The laughter continued, echoing throughout the forest with no other sounds to mute it.
The laughing head of Irilys turned slowly, but rather than an owl-like face as before, it was a humanoid one, with a predatory smile that he would recognize all too well.
Kalidas.
Suddenly, the owl body would burst into a dazzling rain of feathers, revealing Kalidas’s entire body, muscular and fair, adorned with pelts and bones. She took a casual posture, leaning in the throne with her knee up, her laugh finally tapering off into a dark smile.
“Oh, Shinzu!” She would say. “I’ve kept my eye on you, you know. Did you forget the oath you swore upon dedicating yourself to my service? My dear Shinzu, your lips simply drip with betrayal! My devoted are misguided? My, my, my…” She laughed once more and stood, her gigantic form towering stories above Shinzu.
“You wish to help the Magi. You wish you dismantle everything my guild is, everything I represent. Quaint, but in vain. You cannot stand against a goddess.” She held one arm above her head, and a silver bow, began to materialize in her hand. “You wish to associate with my prey? To help them? Perhaps you want to be one. You have ten seconds; I suggest you start running.”

“Eh?” Shinzu stretched his arms out for balance as a grinding screech filled the air. “What’s going on?” He thought to himself as bits of dust and sand began to obstruct the area. Amidst the sea of brown and grey, Shinzu was truly without his senses. Sight had been robbed of him. Smell was worthless as he buried his nose under his shirt in order to protect his lungs from the debris. Hearing, however? “I-I knew it!” As the student’s enhanced hearing picked up on a foreign laugh, his heart skipped a beat. For a second, it was almost as if the very concept of time froze. Was this a blessing from the true Irilys? A window to escape? Or… Simply fear? Either way, now was the time to act.
“TACTICAL RETREAT!” The words were screamed into his own mind as he turned 180 degrees away from ‘Irilys’ and hopped off the platform before landing on the ground in a squat stance. Despite this action causing a surge of pain to hit Shinzu’s legs as his muscles attempted to absorb the force of the sudden impact, he couldn’t stop moving. This situation was dangerous. “Gyah. Can’t see.” Dust still obscured the area and the terrifying laugh was beginning to take on a deeper tone. “I’m certain now. This is not Irilys. The only other God who would bother with me would be….” The thought made the student gulp. The hunter was about to become the hunted. “…Kalidas.”
Immediately, Shinzu broke out into a sprint. He had no idea where he was going, however, as long as he moved in a straight line, he hoped that he would eventually crash into the doors he had entered from. At the very least, if this happened, it would give him an indication of where he was and that there would be stairs beyond the doors. “Why me! Why my dreams! Wait… Can she even harm me in my dreams?” As Shinzu continued his mad dash towards freedom, his enhanced hearing could pick up on the fact that the laughter was beginning to grow more feminine and murderous.
“I’m dead. I’m doomed. I can’t defeat a God!” Shinzu swallowed all the moisture in his mouth. Shadows flickered all around him, however, he was too busy running to be able to pay any attention to them. What he did notice, however, was the fact that the soft and sandy texture of the ground was beginning to shift into something that felt more akin to grass. “I’m already outside?” It was impossible. He hadn’t even gone through the doors yet. Had he teleported? “What is going on!?” It took all his willpower to avoid screaming or letting out a panicked yell. While under the cover of the dust, Shinzu wanted to get as far away from the demon as possible without giving away his location.
“No!” After what felt like a minute, the dust began to settle. “Damn it!” Wanting to know how far his efforts had taken him, Shinzu peeked over his shoulder for a moment, the act of which allowing him to register what he assumed to be a feathered and rather confident-looking Kalidas. “Come now!” He said whilst gasping. He was no longer looking at Kalidas and instead, only focusing on running. Not that he needed to anyway. His enhanced sense of hearing could pick up on Kalidas’ cruel voice quite easily. “We both know you don’t care about what petty names I call your so called ‘devoted’. Besides, I’ve made my decision to hunt down all those who go against my morals. Hunters included. Surely, you would approve of that considering you yourself are hunting one of your own!”
Shinzu began to wheeze. During the earlier moment when he looked over his shoulder, fear had gripped him so much that he had failed to register the distance between himself and his foe. “Damn it.” He muttered to himself as he glanced behind once more to check how well he was doing. “Another owl? Irilys?” Shinzu’s heart sank as his sharp vision spotted the small black and white owl perched next to Kalidas. Had Irilys betrayed him? Was there anyone left he could trust? “Gotta wake up… Gotta wake up… Gotta wake up…”

Welcome to your
His almost taunting call back towards Kalidas was met with a silver arrow slamming into a tree next to him, splintering wood and causing cracks to wind up along the length of the trunk, as if it was ice over a lake. And just like ice, the tree shattered behind Shinzu in chunks. Her laugh echoed from every direction once more. “One of my own?”
Another arrow whizzed over Shinzu’s head and slammed into a tree directly ahead of him, this time causing an explosion of wood that would leave him unharmed, but not unhurt, likely pelted by bark shrapnel. If at any point he would look back, he would see the shining form of Kalidas, sometimes in branches above, other times next to trees. It seemed he couldn’t put any extra distance between them. Her voice would come as if she was whispering just over his shoulder.
“You are not one of my own,” she said. “You show mercy to magi and hunt my devoted. You are nothing but prey.”
The hunt would continue on like this, and so long as Shinzu kept going, her shots would continue to narrowly avoid him, but come closer each time, until he could feel the displaced air caressing his skin. He would have to push himself until he felt his lungs burning and body giving way. Only then would he come to a forked path; one to the grand structure of the University, and the other would transition to a familiar alleyway in Dagos, with several familiar figures of children and air magi instantly recognizable to the man. However, that path was devoid of cover, a hundred yards between the treeline and the city entrance. The university was much closer, and in fact, the brush was thicker, too. In any case, Shinzu would have to make a choice, as the trees directly ahead of him were thick enough to form a natural wall that forced him along either path.
Either way, he would hear Her echoing laughter once more. “I will say this, Shinzu; you are better at being exciting prey than you ever were at being a hunter!”

Shinzu winced as an arrow ripped through a tree and peppered him in tiny fragments of the bark. “For a dream… This sure is realistic…” A grimace began to plaster itself onto his face. What good could running truly achieve? “W-Wait! Let’s discuss this!” Shinzu wheezed as he felt his stamina draining. For a moment, he truly considered skidding to a halt and stalling with a conversation whilst his aching muscles rested. At least, that was until an arrow struck a tree directly in front of him, the act of which causing it to explode and pelt his aching body with chunks of bark.
“Tch.” With fear being a powerful motivator, Shinzu began to increase his running pace. As the chunks of bark exploded, he simply fell to the ground and allowed the momentum to roll him forwards. Thanks to this action, most of the makeshift projectiles simply missed and passed harmlessly over him. What little did hit him, simply bounced off and left faint bruises or tiny scratches due to the rough texture of the bark. “I can’t keep going.” Before he could slowdown, in a swift fluid motion, Shinzu pushed himself off the ground and carried on with his exhausting sprint.
“Hypocrite! You yourself allow Magi to worship you! I’ve even heard rumours of you blessing a select few Magi trouble makers! Why is this suddenly-” Shinzu interrupted himself with a thought. “Is this really Kalidas?” Shinzu glanced over his shoulder for a moment to analyse his foe. “Never seen her before… So I cannot rely on appearance. She is using her fabled bow and arrow… With impeccable aim… However, any imposter could imitate that. As for personality or mannerisms… I know nothing about her. Nothing, except for what Irilys told me.” The student grit his teeth. ‘Please do not be a sheep. The Huntress merely wishes not to be bored’ - those were the great owl deity’s words. As far as Shinzu was concerned, those words were absolute. They were law.
“I’ve done nothing wrong. The world I dream of, is a world where Kalidas is still entertained and Hunters still hunt.” Shinzu shuddered as the God’s voice whispered over his shoulder. This wasn’t the work of Irilys. Something in Shinzu’s heart told him that the deity would never lie. Much like Shinzu, he seemed like the type that would hate to contradict himself and give others the opportunity to prove him wrong. If that assumption was correct, that this wasn’t Kalidas either. If anything, Kalidas would have more of a reason to strike if Shinzu stopped this crusade of his and became a bore. “That begs the question… Does this thing not being Kalidas mean I am in less… Or more danger?”
Shinzu whelped as he began to feel the wind from the arrows brushing against his hair and skin. “She’s toying with me. Why?” The answer was obvious. The huntress obviously liked a good chase. “There was an oddly coloured owl earlier that was somewhat, although not exactly like Irilys. Now we have a bloodthirsty Kalidas who is somewhat, although not exactly as she should be. Is someone controlling the Gods?” Shinzu shook his head to dismiss the thought. He was far too insignificant to have brain washed Gods sent to assassinate him.
“Time out! Please! Time out!” Shinzu was beginning to gasp for air and his pace was beginning to slow. If his lungs cried out in pain any more, then they would likely explode. “Damn it.” Shinzu cursed as the path began to split. Rather than dwell on the situation, however, he simply headed for the University due to its abundance of cover and the fact that he had the layout of the building memorised. The choice was painfully obvious. Perhaps… Too obvious. Either way though, Shinzu had to take the chance. He couldn’t risk any of his foe’s stray arrows hitting the Magi littering the other path. “Humour me. Out of everything, why Irilys and Kalidas?” The question was left purposely vague. If his hunch was correct, then he was hoping that the possible imposter would give away some sort of useful hint or information.

Welcome to your
Ah, clever boy, as always! Nevyne laughed to herself as her owl guise flew overhead, watching the scene below. Oh! Towards the university? How interesting~ It seems he’s figured something out. No wonder he’s so close to the Owl. A shame, too; that stuffy old bird should learn to share his followers. This man is too interesting for Him!
On his way to the university, he would notice a distinct lack of arrows flying in his direction. In fact, the university was much closer than it looked; he was already at the front entrance before he knew it.
“Hiding, Shinzu?” Kalidas called. “Very well. We’ll resume this in the waking realm. Until then, it’s time for new prey.” She laughed again, and for a moment after it faded, Shinzu had a brief reprieve. Silence. Peace. A break.
It was all shattered with a cry that seemed to come from within his own head. A child’s cry? One of pain, of suffering. Another one, screeching in his ear. Then another scream from a soft, smooth voice. And then the death call of a dying old man. It would seem Kalidas moved on to other nearby prey.
Then, in his own voice, he would hear a whisper. “Oh, tough luck for the Magi. Guess you can’t help them all, huh? Better to save yourself anyway, that’s what I always say!” He would hear himself giggle in his own ear. “Shinzu, don’t be coy. You’re a clever fellow; why wouldn’t they be here? They’re close to you in their own way, are they not? But if you really wish for more answers, step into the university, and your professors will guide you from there. You trust them, don’t you?”
And his voice was gone from his ear, leaving any questions or replies to be answered with silence. If Shinzu would indeed step into the grand entrance of the university, he would see the familiar faces of the professors and headmaster, standing in a semi-circle, watching him. In the center of them sat a table, and upon it, an ornate pen, a jar of ink, a ceremonial, curved dagger, and a single piece of paper with a complex rune on it. One he would recognize from spotting it on some professors, or from looking deeply into books and research. The rune that bound people to the University, that infamous brand of total submission.
Above the staring figures, on a ledge where the wall and ceiling met, a familiar black-and-white owl would perch and watch. The Headmaster spoke.
"Shinzu, you are a bright student, and a brilliant mind. Step forward and take this vow of loyalty to the University, and we will give you all the answers you could ever think of questions to."

“Eh?” As Shinzu’s pace slowed to a crawl, he begun to realise that the looming sense of danger had evaporated. “She’s gone…” He looked back and mercifully, saw no demonic archers chasing after him. “Woah!” Shinzu skid to a halt before very nearly running face first into the University’s entrance. If he wasn’t certain before, then he definitely was now. Despite this being his own personal dream, someone or something had just hijacked it. The fact that he had just teleported to the University was proof enough of that. “I thought my dream catchers were supposed to prevent this!” The student huffed as he made use of the several minutes of silence to regain his stamina and composure.
“I won’t fall for it again.” Shinzu thought to himself as the echo of slain civilian’s filled his head. “This is a dream. Nothing more. I will not be goaded into a trap!” Despite the strong will, subconsciously, Shinzu’s fists couldn’t help but betray him and tighten under the strain of the situation. “Who are you!?” He snapped as a new voice filled his head. “You and your mind games. I can tell I’d have a lot of fun playing chess with you.” Despite the playful tone, the student was beginning to feel a hint of fear welling inside of him. If this was Irilys’ doing, then he could possibly talk his way out of it. If it was Kalidas, then he could potentially lull her into a fall sense of security by playing on her overconfidence. This person though? He’d have to outwit him or her. “That giggle though… Despite it being in my own voice, something tells me that this is a woman that I’m dealing with.”
Meekly, Shinzu pushed open the doorway and peered inside whilst taking great care as to not take even a step inside. “Something tells me the doors are going to shut right behind me if I do…” Shinzu then studied the scene in front of him. Professors, the headmaster and… “The brand!” For a moment, he was caught off guard by the scene. It was what he always feared. Losing his will and sense of freedom. “A bright student and brilliant mind would know better than to step forward. Wouldn’t you agree?” Shinzu responded to the headmaster as his eyes glanced upwards and met with the monochrome owl from earlier. “Is that her? The one who set up this playing field… Why is she still pretending to be Irilys?”
Shinzu snickered to himself. “My apologies headmaster, but if something is worth doing, then it is worth doing right. You’ll have to offer me a lot more than that if you want to turn me into a devilishly handsome puppet!” Mid-sentence, Shinzu slammed the door shut before he could be forced inside. “Let’s see.” The student spread his legs, tightened his fists and focused as he walked away from the University. “Sword. Swoooooooooooooooooord!” A vein began to bulge on his forehead. If anyone was watching, then he’d probably look like a very angry child that was throwing a tantrum. In reality, however, he was focusing. Every ounce of his brainpower was going into conjuring a sword in his left hand. If it worked, then it suggested that he had more control over this dream than he realised. If not, then his mind had been fully high jacked and he was completely at the mercy of this invader.

Welcome to your
Nevyne laughed to herself at his words, his actions, and the overall situation. Ah, this one was always such fun, for a time. But if her life had taught her anything, it’s that it’s much less entertaining to frighten them once they’ve figured things out. However, this mortal could still prove entertaining. And so she didn’t reply to him when he tried to talk to her, instead silently floating overhead in her form, watching his concentration. For the first time in many dreams, she had to actually stop herself from laughing out loud at him.
She spiraled down to the man, who was concentrating far too much to take note of her. Shinzu would certainly feel a sudden weight in his left hand, though after any initial excitement wore off, he’d quickly note two things; one, the weight was on his forearm, not his hand, and two, there was now a pitch-black owl perched there, looking at him with eyes as blue as the deepest reaches of the ocean. Shinzu would notice now that the dark feathers of the owl were beyond black, as if there was simply… a void. A texture glitch in a videogame. Nothingness. Claws would dig in and he wouldn’t be able to move his arm. Whether or not he struck at her would be his choice entirely. If he did, she would disappear in a puff of feathers. If he did not, she would speak with her voice from the beak of the black and white owl.
“Chess is such a dull game,” she would say, her voice sing-song and conversational, as if she had not just inflicted mental suffering on the mortal. “You are bright, but also… very dull. You’d rather talk than play, and in doing so, you’ve made the game dull. No wonder you and that stuffy old bird get along so well.” She let out a hoot that sounded like a disappointed sigh. “But you have interesting bits to your mind, so I will indulge you until I grow bored.” She would shake her feathers and stretch her head forward. “Though before I say more, you must scratch my chin, ahuhu~”

The red-faced Shinzu continued focusing with his eyes tightly shut. At first, it felt as if his efforts were going to be unrewarded. At least, that was until he felt something strange on his arm. “Woah!” He dared not open his eyelids as he felt the object weighing down on him. To him, it felt as if even a moment of broken focus would could the object to fade away and vanish into the wind. Eventually, however, he had no choice but to inspect the fruits his labour. “Did it wo- WOAH!” He jumped backwards as the sight of the eyes staring back startled him. For some reason, the fake Irilys was now on his forearm.
“H-Hello?” He stuttered as he lifted his left hand up so that it was parallel to the ground. This meant that the black owl would no longer be struggling for balance and would respectfully, be at eye-level with Shinzu. “Chess.” He squinted his eyes. “Is a gentleman’s game of honour.” Shinzu sighed at the end of his sentence. Instead of summoning the sword, he had instead, somehow summoned the mastermind behind all this torment. “Talking can be a fun game too y’know? Especially when it gives me a chance to catch my breath… I hate cardio.” The student scratched his chin with his spare hand. If there was any room for doubt, then now it was gone. This definitely wasn’t Irilys’s doing. It was all on this 'other' owl.
“If you don’t mind me asking, why that form? Do all deities love dressing up as owls?” Shinzu pondered over the thought. First Irilys and now this… demon. Why was she even after him? “Very well. But you owe me!” Shinzu complied with the demand and scratched the owl’s chin. Every so often, he also ran his fingers along the pitch-feathers to check if they were actually portals into some sort of abyss. The strange colouring was definitely making it difficult to focus. “So then! Answers! Is torturing innocent young students a hobby of yours or something? And how did you make it past my dream catcher! I thought it was supposed to help prevent bad dreams and nightmares. And most important of all, who are you! Why don't you do something more constructive with your time like help me do some good in the world! ...Ahem.”

Welcome to your
The owl cooed in what could only be described as a birdlike laughter. “I am no gentleman, and honor is a concept invented by mortals. For a hunter, you’re quite out of shape, Shinzu.” She laughed once more. She said nothing to his other inquiries, only stretching Her birdlike neck out further until he decided to scratch. This, however, came with cocky words.
You. Owe. Me.
As soon as the mortal would go to scratch Her chin, She would snap lightning-fast and give him a vicious bite deep into his index finger. She would turn into a wispy form of the owl, smoke pouring from Her feathers, and fly through Shinzu with a hellish screech, a dissonant scream of voices just off-key enough to create a booming sound, a sound so powerful it would cause pain, and perhaps a bit of bleeding from the ears.
A throne inhuman bones would rise behind the man, the seat starting at twice his height. The bones were engraved with flowing patterns and words he wouldn’t recognize; each engraving pulsed with a low, orange glow. Nonhuman bones were clearly visible; wings, elongated heads, claws, and sharp teeth. Nevyne would sit atop the throne, but not in Her bare form; no, he did not deserve to gaze upon Her. Instead, Her feminine figure was shrouded in flowing, black tatters, Her face hidden behind an impenetrable veil of darkness. Opgraven sat upon Her head, His teeth grinding and gnashing. Her legs remained uncrossed, but closed, and boney hands gripped the armrests of the throne.
“I do not owe you anything, mortal,” She would say. Her voice carried with a small echo, and had a tint of femininity, despite how deep it was. “Do you forget yourself? You are a guest in my home, and you would be wise not to forget it. If you do not wish to be fed to my dear Oppy-“ At this, Opgraven growled low and made a fierce bite. She reached Her skeletal hand up to stroke the side of His head. “You would be wise to apologize, and wiser still to choose your words carefully.”
She brought Her hand down and rest the elbow on Her throne, then set Her head against Her fist. “Honestly, mortals are so ungrateful. I only ask for a bit of entertainment and respect in exchange for letting you roam freely in my home. I know you did not learn such rudeness from your patron; He may be stuffy and dull, but He does have manners.”
