Personality overall
Amongst his peers, Shinzu is most known for his keen attention to detail. He is extremely observant over even the most minuscule of facts and never fails to plan several steps in advance. While most Runic Professors would ordinarily consider this as the ideal quality for their students to possess, Shinzu's lackluster shortcomings do leave much to be desired. For one thing, Shinzu is so attentive that he often spends many hours pondering and stressing over the smallest of problems that most wouldn’t even pay any attention to.
Shinzu also bears the tendency to get distracted and slightly tunnel-sighted when it comes to quenching his thirst for knowledge. While tinkering with something, it isn’t uncommon for him to completely abandon his current pursuit of knowledge for something slightly more interesting should that opportunity suddenly present itself to him. This also tends to embody itself as a dislike for commitment. Shinzu is a firm believer in not limiting himself. It is that very principle that led to him signing up as a Hunter despite already having his hands full with mastering novice-level rune magic. The opportunity to delve into the secrets of two separate organisations was simply far too tempting for his curious mind.
It is also important to note that unlike most, Shinzu is a fairly open minded individual. He is the type to act more so on facts and research than simple emotions. In terms of Magi, Shinzu can more than understand that abuse and discrimination can push even the best of people into a corner. In such scenarios, retaliation is a natural response. At the same time, however, Shinzu could never turn a blind eye to some of the atrocities Magi terrorists have committed in the past. While he is a firm believer of not condemning an entire race because of the actions of several isolated cases, he is also no fool. Regardless of the justification, Shinzu would never hesitate to ‘mercifully’ take down a dangerous Magi if it could lead to the betterment of the world...
...After all, he’s also not the type to make the same mistake twice.

[PTab=APPEARANCE]
Locked away in permanent slumber
appearance
Shinzu’s most striking feature is his unruly spiky hair. Interestingly, observers have noted that its dull-red shade can shift to darker brown tones under certain lighting conditions (or lack of). The most noticeable characteristic, however, is the fact that it is kept very rough and untidy, with some of the longer strands reaching just below his eyebrows. Overall, this seems to contribute to Shinzu’s rather lax and carefree outward demeanour. In fact, despite being quite the over thinker, his rather youthful features and light brown eyes always seems to betray his personality and give off the impression of a young man who has yet to face any hardships in the world.
Another notable feature is the small scar stretched across Shinzu’s left eyebrow, which serves as a constant reminder to him of what carelessness can cost a person. Aside from this, Shinzu’s skin is fairly youthful and lacks blemishes or other marks. Overall, despite the seeming lack of muscle mass, he bears a slim yet muscular build (a fact which is often kept hidden amongst the folds of his clothing). He also stands at a rather tall height of 6’1”, which naturally, is another factor that contributes to his rather slender appearance despite being physically fit and active.
Fashion
Shinzu is the type of person that likes to be practical whilst also taking a laid back stance when it comes to clothing. In essence, he likes to wear clothing that is tight enough to not flutter around the wind aimlessly or snag along objects, whilst at the same time, being loose enough to offer comfort and a certain degree of flexibility. Generally, this means a preference for things such as chinos that have been woven from softer fabrics then jeans, a wardrobe full of unimaginative shirts in different colours that lack logos or designs and usually, some sort of thin coat that can offer Shinzu a way to comfortably hide his holster full of throwing knives.

Childhood
Shinzu was subjected to a slightly odd upbringing in his time of youth. His older brother was always placed on a golden pedestal while in contrast, Shinzu was left neglected and underappreciated by his parents. While it certainly wasn’t a harsh or cruel childhood, it did lead to Shinzu seeking out ways to fill the empty void in his life, such as through books and a growing thirst for knowledge. Since as far as he could remember, Shinzu always considered himself as a curious child. Rather than just simply accepting facts and opinions as law, he always enjoyed questioning the natural order of things. He loved picking apart theories and changing other people’s perception of fiction into fact.
Of course, none of this nonsense ever caught the fancy of his mother or father. They were both simply far too focused on their first born to have the time to entertain the whims and interests of the second born. Naturally, this led to a lot of resentment while growing up. So much so, that even to this day, Shinzu can’t even recall his older brother’s name. The two never were close after all. Not to mention the fact that Shinzu avoided him as best he could in order to spare himself from hearing any more of his parent’s constant praise for him. It was all a bit too much for him to handle. Frustrating even.
Shinzu never even really had any knowledge of what his brother was constantly praised for. Apparently it had something to do with earning a lot of money. Possibly some sort of important or highly influential job. Of course, the one thing Shinzu noticed while growing up was the fact that no matter how much money or praise his older brother earned, the family’s living conditions never improved. It was always the same modest house. No leaky roof or creaky floorboards. Nothing to complain about, but at the same time, nothing to brag about either.
Teenhood
Upon reaching his later teen years, Shinzu started to put the facts together. Clearly, his older brother wasn’t sharing his wealth with the rest of the family. Either that or he had somehow lost his implied fortune. Probably through something generic such as a gambling or drinking problem. There wasn’t much else that could go wrong in the life of a man who had everything. Regretfully, despite attempting to connect the dots on his own, Shinzu never did get a solid answer about the situation.
By the time he was curious enough to actually ask about his brother, there was no one left to answer the question. Having been so buried in his books and resentment for his brother, Shinzu never really bothered to keep any ties with the rest of his family. He had friends of course, and was far from lonely. However, he had no knowledge or recollection of any aunts, cousins or nephews. His brother, as always, was obviously busy doing whatever he did and his parents seemed to suddenly never want to mention or hear about their ‘favourite’ son ever again. It felt as if a wish had been granted.
For whatever reason, his parent's pride had somehow been replaced with scorn and spite. For a while, this made Shinzu feel content. However, with no real strong emotional bonds or connections between him and his parents there to replace anything, his older brother being out of the picture didn’t really change much. All it had done was change the once happy atmosphere in the house to a bleak and desolate one. Shinzu had long since made peace with the fact that he would never gain his parents approval. However, now he was faced with an even bigger concern. He’d have to live his life knowing that they would never be happy again. The thought pained him.
Adulthood
With a desperate need to gain his parents approval once more rekindled within him, Shinzu decided to pour his attention into amassing his own fortune. Of course, despite his eagerness to learn, Shinzu’s lack of commitment did mean that he was moving from job to job at a rather worrying pace. Over time, he had sort of become a jack of all trades. A lot of general knowledge, but no real specialisation or focus in any particular areas. The only thing that really stuck was him picking up cooking and earning a position as a head chef in a fancy restaurant. Of course, even that didn’t work out in the end because of Shinzu’s tendency to push his love of spicy food on less willing customers. For some reason, he also felt more at ease playing around with the knives than he did actually doing any real cooking.
After a while, Shinzu seemed to be at a loss. He was learning and doing what he loved, even if it was getting him nowhere in life. However, that alone was never going to lead to his parents praise and happiness. Around the time the last of the Magi relocation centres shut down, Shinzu suddenly found himself gaining a surge of interest revolving around all things Magi-related. While books and news reports satisfied his hunger for a short while, the teen realised that he needed more. He needed to do more. He wanted to understand everything about this new topic of interest.
Over the next few years, Shinzu enrolled himself in the Rune University and spent most of his time learning Rune Magic. In his mind, this felt as if it was the best way to grow closer to the Magi. He wanted to ‘become’ one in order to learn how they ticked. He wanted to see the world through the eyes of someone able to use magic in order to better understand what drives and motivates them. It was a noble quest. An attempt at understanding the unknown. However, like most things in life, it didn’t hold Shinzu’s attention for long.
Despite the prestige that came with being a student at the University, it was never going to pay the bills or earn his parents respect. Besides, sitting in a classroom all day scribbling runes wasn’t going to satisfy Shinzu’s thirst for knowledge either. He needed to do some field research. Having been self-reliant on his own cooking skills whilst away from home, Shinzu’s talents with wielding a knife had never dulled (despite his inability to cook anything remotely non-spicy). This led to Shinzu eventually being approved as an honorary Hunter.
Although his hands were full with learning Rune Magic, Shinzu liked the idea of branching himself out and gaining the resources of two separate organisations. The job also commanded quite a bit of respect. The pay wasn’t half bad either and more importantly, it allowed him to interact with Magi every so often. Sadly, it was never anything useful. The bloodthirsty Magi always seemed to be taken down on a kill first, ask questions later basis by his Hunter comrades. In contrast, the more ‘innocent’ Magi always seemed to be more open to negotiation. However, the moment Shinzu ever seemed to express his intentions of allowing them to escape, they always seemed to flee immediately without giving Shinzu even the slightest opportunity to satisfy his curiosity by asking them the nagging unanswered questions constantly on the back of his mind.
It was always the same. Magi, for one reason or another, always seemed to be unwilling to converse properly. Perhaps they were simply unused to being in the presence of someone willing to hear their side of the story. Of course, that was until one fateful day. On a routine bounty hunt mission, Shinzu had managed to track down a Magi guilty of killing sixteen civilians in a fit of rage after his human wife had been executed in front of him. Naturally, Shinzu felt as if he understood the Magi. Who wouldn’t react violently to such an atrocity after all? Shinzu felt somewhat benevolent that day. He felt as if he was the only human in the city that could understand what this Magi was going through. “Wait!” Shinzu remembered uttering something to that effect. “I am not here to harm you! I am not your enemy! I understand! I understand what you are going throu-” Shinzu also remembered how that was the most he could say before his voice was cut off by a fierce typhoon.
Shinzu awoke several days later in hospital with a terrible head wound. Apparently the targeted Magi had escaped. Although, not before killing several more innocent civilians and a Hunter along the way. At first, Shinzu wondered if he had been spared. Was the fact that he was still alive proof that Magi were capable of mercy and human emotion? No. Shinzu learned from the doctor that he was found in a pool of his own blood. By pure chance, the tightly wrapped headband had ended up adding pressure to the wound, slowing down the blood loss. While to the Magi it probably looked as if Shinzu was going to bleed out from the head injury, in reality, the pressure bought Shinzu a precious few extra minutes of sustained life, which was just barely enough time for the medics to arrive on scene. It was a lesson in life Shinzu had never learned before. From that day onwards, he learned that not all things in life require understanding or probing. Some things are just the way that they are.
