HEADS, I LIVE. TAILS, YOU DIE. 779 words for Shinzunotes here?
It was getting increasingly common that Orion come back to the slums where he grew up, a fact that he found rather difficult to swallow. It was a place he hated like no other, especially the uglier side of the glitzy city, which was the part of it that he knew best. The winding streets, old and decrepit, some of them filled with buildings that had been condemned by the government, was the unofficial home of more than a few fugitive Magi. It was also the place where his mother had died, and being near it was always bound to put him in a bad mood. Never a good thing for anyone who was hoping that he would be merciful, ridiculous as the idea was.
Thankfully, his quarry had stuck to downtown Dagos, hoping that the denser crowds of people would disguise his presence. If it had been anyone but a Hunter following the Magi, it probably would have worked, but Kalidas had given her agents a few tricks that kept them a step ahead. With his hand on the butt of his gun, Orion followed the scent of the water Magi, his height keeping him just in sight of the rapidly retreating lump of black cloth. The people wandered in clumps, many of them tourists, but when Orion approached, they parted around him. Perhaps it was his size, or the cloud in his expression, but most likely it was the massive sword down his back that made them realize that getting in his way was ill-advised.
This one had gotten on the authorized Hunt list in a bad way, when his magic had been responsible for the death of two tourists and a common Casino guard a couple of weeks ago, but that wasn't why Orion had taken the job. It was the fact that the Magi had been convicted of illegally peddling Uppers that had put him on Orion's list specifically. A good deal of fact-checking and research had led Orion to the conclusion that this one had nothing to do with his mother's death, but that wasn't enough to save him. Upper dealers were among the worst kind of scum in the Hunter's mind, and it was his pleasure to take this one off of the streets.
But he couldn't just open fire in the middle of the street. Instead, he followed the retreating Magi, his nose supplementing whenever Orion was unable to see him. Pulling a sheet of paper from his belt, he began to draw a rune just as he saw his quarry turn onto a side street. This one was far less populated, and Orion finished the final stroke and lifted the sheet to his eye. He was fortunate that he'd thought to do it, as the magic began to glow on the ground in front of his feet, and he stopped in front of the trap that it had left, which was a tiny bubble barely visible unless one was looking for it. With the help of his "identify magic" rune, Orion was.
"If you give up now, you don't necessarily have to die," Orion warned, the sheet still in hand.
"Come and make me," the young Magi dared, folding his arms in front of him.
"If you insist," Orion said.
Without another word, he drew his gun and fired, hitting the Magi in the shoulder as he stepped around the bubble. A spear of ice flew at him, and he dodged to the side, firing again as the normal people fled the area, screaming. His next bullet hit the Magi in the stomach, and the kid fell in a heap, grasping desperately at its stomach as if he could stop the wound if he held it hard enough. As Orion approached and stood over the downed Magi, he realized that he'd been wrong. The Magi had been spreading a layer of ice over the wound, and he grinned as he extended his hand toward Orion.
His reflexes weren't fast enough to entirely spare him the icy spear that grazed his shoulder, and he grunted as he pulled his gun level and fired again. This time, his bullet got the target in the throat, and it gurgled as it tried to speak, the blood filling its lungs. It didn't take long for the light to leave its eyes. Standing to his full height again, Orion approached it again, his gun still in hand, though he clutched his injured shoulder with his free hand. He wasn't taking any chances. With a cold frown, Orion shot it again, between the eyes.
Those fishy scales would make a good gift for Kalidas.

Shinzu jolted out of his seat as the sound of a gunshot resonated through the air. “Another Hunter?” Immediately, a panicked expression betrayed his face. Only one type of person would open fire on another in Downtown Dagos. A fellow Hunter. “Cadence…” Immediately, the student pondered over the poor creature that had become this heartless Hunter’s new prey. Was it a random Magi? Cadence even? Or her foster children? The thought sent a shiver down Shinzu’s spine and forced him to leap into action.
“Another.” Shinzu bit down on his bottom lip as another gunshot resonated in the air. This sound, coupled together with the fleeing screams of random civilians allowed Shinzu to pinpoint the origin of the weapon to a side street. “W-Wait!” He howled at the beast of a man and watched as he pulled the trigger to fire another shot at the scaled Magi’s forehead. “Ugh…” The student cringed as the bullet hit its mark. Partly because of his heightened sense of hearing. Mostly though, because of his weakness. A soft spot for water Magi.
“Was he dangerous?” The words slipped out of Shinzu’s lips in a moment of weakness. An action which was immediately followed by regret. “W-Well. Comparatively to other Magi I mean.” The student couldn’t help but mentally face palm. What would this gun wielding maniac do if he realised that he was in the presence of a Magi supporter? “I’ve grown way too soft…” With a tinge of fear flaring up inside of him, Shinzu swallowed what little moisture existed in his mouth before swiftly pushing the topic into a new and hopefully safer direction.
“Anyway. Who are you? I’ve never seen you around the Hunter’s guild before.” Shinzu shot the man a friendly smile to further create the sense that he was no threat. “Hunters don’t attack other Hunters… Right?” The student didn’t know what to believe. He had spent so much time with Hunter-hating Magi recently that he was beginning to lose a sense of what the world really was. Was he in danger right now? Or was this Hunter simply doing his job? Millions of questions and possibilities fluttered in his mind. “I could probably outrun him if he didn’t have a gun…”

HEADS, I LIVE. TAILS, YOU DIE. 493 words for Shinzunotes here?
Swearing under his breath, Orion turned to look at the man who had called out when he was preparing to strike. Was it another Magi, or a sympathizer? He inhaled in a sharp sniff, and was disgusted to find that the man was fully human. When the man spoke, Orion put his gun back in its holster, glancing at the blood that was seeping from between his fingers. Was this guy serious? All Magi were dangerous, to varying degrees. This one had even been on the official list, which meant that it had been known to attack humans. Those were the kind that the Hunter's Guild had been created to track down and put an end to. The man was quick to backtrack, seeming to realize that what he said was ridiculous. Orion stared at him for a long second before answering.
"Well, he nearly skewered me, so..." Orion grunted, lifting his hand to look at the wound. "Yeah, I'd say he was pretty dangerous."
Kneeling beside the dead Magi, Orion pulled out the knife from his belt and began to saw at the scales along the Magi's neck. They came loose easily, as if scaling a fish. He lay them on a cloth beside the corpse, clearing his throat at the stench. The Magi had vacated his bowels upon the event of his death, which was fairly normal when anyone died, but in combination with the vaguely fishy smell that the Magi had, it was overpowering to Orion's enhanced senses. He would be grateful when he was done with the body. With the scales removed, he folded the cloth over them and tucked them into a pouch on his belt before pulling out a digital scanner.
The device read the Magi's fingertips, confirming the kill and alerting the authorities to the presence of a dead body all at the same time. It was how the Hunters managed to stay legitimate, and how he avoided getting arrested for gunning someone down in the streets. His license depended on scanning these in, or scanning in the iris if the hands were too damaged. Once the scanner beeped, he put it away again and dropped the Magi's hand back to the ground without ceremony. It thumped lifelessly to the ground, and he stood, not giving the corpse another thought.
"Orion Lorne," he introduced himself, wiping his fingers on a cloth before extending his uninjured arm in a greeting. "And you are?"
After the man's response, he pulled out a fresh cloth and dabbed at the wound. It was fairly clean, since the weapon had been made of ice, but he would need to take a trip to the med unit for a few stitches. It hurt like a bitch, but at least he had dodged enough that it had only grazed him. A puncture through the shoulder would have probably had permanent consequences. Luck was on his side today, it seemed.
