Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Awakening came about slowly this morning. It was a night absent of dreams but not absent of the minor dampness Elijah felt upon his cheek as he turned his head into his pillow. Ah. Drool. At least that was a sign of a good night's rest. With a quiet groan the man pulled the form closer to himself and would cradle his chin downwards to smell the hair of his daughter. Her scent was a sweet one that always seemed to kickstart his day with a brightness that had been absent for so many years--
Brows furrowed as he realized he was smelling into a pillow. He was hugging a pillow? Blind eyes would blink in groggy confusion until memories would allow themselves to be remembered. That's right. She had stayed the night with Luca last night. Ever since reuniting with Stella the older man had barely spent time apart from her. Living in his current one bedroom apartment in Haven it had become clear that Stella wished to stay with him even through the nights. A wish that Elijah, in his accumulated selfishness that had built up over the eight years apart, had agreed to the temporary arrangement that now led to him smelling and hugging a pillow out of habit.
Realizing his folly the magi tossed aside the pillow, sighing as he heard it slide from its landing to land upon the floor softly. Ugh, he'd pick it up later. A few moments would pass as Elijah would finally urge himself to sit up, an act that would eventually lead to standing. Still too heavily influenced from the lengthy sleep he'd just endured the man would feel his way along the walls. It was far too early in his day to utilize earth magic to navigate his way just yet. It was in the early morning that Elijah was truly blind.
Feeling for the doorknob the older magi would exit his bedroom. Oh, how the smell of coffee hit him with a delightful force. Caffeine. One of his best friends. A small smile would cross his features as he continued to feel his way down the hall and into the living room. If left uninterrupted the man would cross over through the dining room and would attempt to pour himself a cup of coffee. In his current state he would have forgotten that there was another entity in his home. The coffee tending to be made on a timer every day, it wouldn't occur to him until he was most likely spoken to. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Coffee was one of the great mysteries of sentient life; unappealingly black, supposedly bitter when taken black, and mixed with chemicals that deprive one of much-needed sleep. To have such a strong desire to consume something so unhealthy seemed like a contradiction to the android who watched the sickly liquid bubble in the pot. This was the thirty-seventh time she'd prepared coffee to the specifications outlined by her master, Elijah, and thirty-six times she held back the inquiry of coffee's appeal. After all, it didn't matter why he enjoyed it, just that he did, and thus she would prepare a pot every morning. It was one of her many personal directives since she entered into his service.
The timer made a soft ding, prompting the android to remove the pot and set it down on the dining room table beside a ceramic mug with a decal that read '#1 Dad'. Silently, she stood by the table and waited. Thirty-six times in the past, the scent of coffee wafting through the apartment (assisted by her careful placement of the pot near air-ventilation systems) would always guide Elijah towards his desired beverage. The thirty-seventh time was no different, and like the thirty-five occasions preceding this, she did not guide him by hand out of respect for his ability to "make his way around his own home", as he put it. He reached for the pot, and silently, the android turned the pot so that his hand would wrap around the handle rather than the glass -- burns were a great risk.
The android was acclimated to moving silently, and she would often utilize this skill to investigate her master's room -- and her master himself -- while he was unawares. It was a courtesy to Elijah's distaste for her initial nosiness, for she valued his safety and well-being over any objections he had over invasions of privacy or "coddling". Today, she found herself staring at his face, where a viscous liquid was matted over his cheek. "Good morning, Mr. Kingsley," she announced softly, "You have saliva on your right cheek," she added before walking past him and gently rapping the armrest of the couch. On the back laid Elijah's attire -- jeans and shirts for all occasions were neatly ironed and folded. "Your clothes have been prepared; will you be out on business, or maybe something more casual?"

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Tired fingers would wrap around the coffee pot's handle, his sleep-ridden mind not questioning why the pot wasn't still upon the maker's burner. The robust warmth of the aroma practically had him mesmerized. The pot would be lifted as his second hand felt for the cup that should be somewhere near -- there it was. Correcting his grip on the cup, eventually coming to grip it by its own handle, the hot beverage would be poured into the mug with little consequence.
Filled up to a comfortable height the pot would be set back down upon the potholder. Elijah's face, within the comfort of his own home, didn't bother hiding any emotions he was currently feeling. Relief. Fatigue. Scarred eyes would closed as the older man inhaled lengthily, fully appreciating the moment. Stillness. Quiet. The smallest of sips would be taken so as to not burn himself but the taste would prove influential enough. Powerfully bold tastes would release a pent up sigh. This was his morning ritual and it was a lovely one. Simple, easy to repeat, and calming.
It wouldn't be until Elijah had his third sip of coffee that he eyes would startle open. A voice. A familiar one at that. Turning his head in the general direction of the one who spoke to him he would listen. Having just awoken, it took the earth magi a short while to comprehend his situation. But there it was. Eventually. "Pathos." Elijah would answer his own unspoken questions in a whisper. "Heh." The older man would laugh once at his groggy state of mind before taking another small sip.
The android had been with him just under a month's time and he still was getting used to it. Whether that was a sign of age or exhaustion was yet to be discovered. It was still an oddity in the man's life. Never had he really associated with AI in such a daily manner. Hell, not even in a monthly manner other than the occasional android cashier that he addressed while purchasing groceries. "Hm?" Elijah would inquire as he lifted up a hand to feel a dampness with his fingertips against his cheek. "Oh." With the sleeve of his button down pajamas the earth magi would wipe away saliva in question, "Thank you."
The question posed would take a moment to consider. Ever since Stella had reentered his life Elijah had taken to taking one day a week off from work. Something that had never truly happened in the past. He hadn't consider himself to have much to live for other than his work until his daughter had been reunited with him. It was jaunting and something he was still getting used to. There was a part of him that wondered if he'd ever really find it normal. Truth be told thus far he had always been able to slip in a good bit of work even on these supposed days off. Time would see if he'd ever truly be successful in accomplishing a full 24 hours of relaxation. "Casual I guess." Elijah would say. He would take one last sip before setting the mug on the table.
Walking forward the man would feel his way to the couch that had been tapped upon. If hands were available to guide him to the set of clothes that were believed to be "casual" he would follow along. Upon coming across the outfit meant for him the man would feel for the shirt first and would raise his hands to begin unbuttoning his pajama top .... only to pause. "Um, sorry. I'm not used to this yet. Your voice is feminine and I'm an old fashioned kind of man ..." The request would hopefully be unnecessary to finish. Especially in the first few days with Pathos being with him Elijah would ask the android to exit the room until he had finished changing his clothes. Slowly this had turned more into a softer warning out of respect to avert one's gaze if they did not wish to witness such an act. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Hearing the softness of Elijah's voice was a relief to a servant who worried that her concern would be seen as patronizing. Despite her master's insistence on doing most of his daily tasks without assistance, Pathos found herself silently rushing to slide the suit she'd laid out on the couch and fold it onto her arm. Standing stock still, she watched on in silence while Elijah partially unbuttoned his shirt; stopping soon after to address her directly. "I am aware that my voice bears a feminine cadence," The android stated, only for her eyes to widen after processing the insinuation being put forth. "O-Oh!" Simulated embarrassment was reflected in her tone and her artificial face flushed pink.
The month she'd spent with Elijah was largely one of trial, error, and understanding of the inherent contradiction that was her master: a man with a severe disability who regularly insisted that he could be independent. It was strange to her, for instance, that a blind person would refuse assistance to the task of clothing themselves. Stranger still was Elijah's reasoning for insistence on dressing up alone, and she was even more confused when his response to her explaining an android's lack of a sex drive, sexual urges, and sexual organs were to assert more strongly that he would be dressing himself away from the prying eyes of his guardian. Leaving him alone never sat well with Pathos, who, despite Elijah's assurances that he could manage on his own, never stopped worrying. She had obeyed him in the past, but after a month, her personality developed into something more sophisticated: that of a doting caretaker.
"Mr. Kingsley, I understand that you are not comfortable with a feminine-sounding voice observe your naked body, despite my prior assurances that I feel none of the urges a human or magi might," She uttered slowly, measuring each word in a careful manner. "That is why I have a solution!" She chirped, turning herself around to face the wall. "I will face this wall and de-activate my retinas now," At this, the glow of her blue eyes faded, and her vision was plunged into darkness. "I have now de-activated my retinas, though I am ready to activate them should you require assistance, but only if you need it."
Pathos smiled, pleased at her ingenuity and resourcefulness, "If my speech makes you uncomfortable, I will not speak. Whatever makes you comfortable, Mr. Kingsley."

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face De-activating retinas. It was going to be a hefty amount of time before he was comfortable with that sort of talk. Elijah had never been savvy with technology, even before the relocation camps. It hadn't very much been an interest to him. Hell, Serena was commonly seen reminding her husband how the damn television remote worked. It wasn't his fault that one controller was apparently set up to control everything in their house from the television channels to the overhead fan's speed ... It was just his fault that he was tech troubled. Over the years Elijah had just grown to nod his head once technobabble began in his office hearings, knowing that one of his more familiar associates would dumb it down for him.
"Thank you, Pathos." Elijah would reply to the android's initial informing. Hands now more comfortable in their tasks, the pajama top would be unbuttoned and shed appropriately. A smile would spread over his lips. It was impossible not to. His new cybernetic acquaintance was just so chipper and proud of her new retina policy. It was contagious and arguably rather cute in that soft feminine voice of hers. In the back of his mind he would ponder upon the advancement of science. A machine's program was capable of expressing such emotions successfully. Perhaps even feel them in a genuine sense.
Such a complex route for thought was shuffled aside for another time when he had quiet to himself. "No, no. Not at all." Elijah would respond to the offer. "You have a very pleasant voice to listen to. I wouldn't ask that of you." The pajama top would be laid over the back of the couch before his hands went feeling for the day's outfit once again. Ah, there it was. The long sleeved cotton shirt would be pulled over his head with ease. Once his head popped out Elijah would continue his thoughts on the subject, hands beginning to work on the removal of pajama bottoms.
"It's just when I'm changing." Elijah would say as his hands paused reaching for his jeans. "... and bathing." He'd add with the lightest of blushes as the memory of a brief incident during the early days of their acquaintance came to the forefront. "I don't want you to turn off your voice." Goodness, that was odd to come off his tongue. "It's just an old habit of modesty that isn't so easily broken is all." A hop or two and those jeans would be pulled up and buttoned.
Speaking of habits the older earth magi would raise a hand up to adjust his glasses that would surely have moved down his nose from his previous hopping. But alas, calloused fingertips would only brush against a bare nose. That was right. He'd just woken up. Heavily scarred eyes would stare blankly into the distance as he decided to instead straighten his shirt. "Pathos, can you bring me my glasses please? I'm done changing." when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

He thinks my voice sounds pleasant? Pathos's cheeks flushed a light shade of pink at this praise. While the android felt blessed to be programmed with emotional stimulation programs, the full range of such feelings often led to moments where she doubted the effectiveness of her personality and demeanor in terms of putting others at ease and looking the part of the kind attendant. "...Thank you, Mr. Kingsley," said Pathos, who looked over her shoulder, the blue of her retinas lighting up -- she hated to betray Elijah's trust, but his safety mattered more than his privacy in her eyes. Thankfully, he was managing just fine on his own. He was also shirtless, the room's lighting emphasized every inch of his torso. Instinctively, Pathos brought her hands to her eyes, until her fingers gradually parted.
The sensation of embarrassment was typically unusual for Pathos, who couldn't avoid situations where she, as a 'woman,' was supposed to be embarrassed at viewing the bare chest of a man without his permission or even his awareness. Yet as an android thinking in the way of logic, what exactly did she have to be embarrassed about, considering romantic expression was impossible on a physical level? A woman with my developed personality in this position would be embarrassed, thus I must be embarrassed. A simple affirmation of protocol, one that stressed she disregard logic. Simple. Easy. She hated doing this.
Elijah's confirmations made Pathos blush even deeper; if seeing a man change without permission elicited embarrassment, then witnessing his naked body by surprise made her want to hide in a closet. "Understood," Pathos replied, speaking just a little more softly than before Elijah's praise. "I will retrieve them," with that, she strode into Elijah's bedroom. A pillow was resting on the floor, prompting the android to retrieve and rest it neatly upon the bed. I may as well straighten the rest... Setting the pillows and straightening the covers was a daily ritual that varied in complexity due to the invariably restless nights Elijah suffered, the reason for which he never explained. His spectacles rested on a nightstand, usually placed there by Pathos herself when her master collapsed into his bed, exhausted.
With his glasses in hand, Pathos returned to the living room. "I have them here," reaching out, the android gently turned one of Elijah's hands so that his palm rested upwards. His glasses were deposited there. After backing away, she straightened up with her arms pressed behind her back. "Is there anything you planned to do today, Mr. Kingsley?"

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Scarred eyes blinked down to the feeling of his hand being turned over. On a lesser scale it still shocked him that a robot could feel so life like. If he hadn't been told differently Elijah would have gone through his life assuming that Pathos was a magi or human. Soft skin with a tentative touch was what graced his. Damn, science was above his head. And he had no problem admitting it. Sometimes it was best to admit short comings in order to get simplified teachings so as to get a better grasp on such expansive subjects as modern robotic science.
Elijah would smile at the kind voice. "Thank you, Pathos." He replied, curling his fingers around the pair of glasses before bringing them up. Sliding the darkly tinted sunglasses onto his face was a familiar sensation. A smooth action with ease and friendly acquaintanceship. They were the reason he could speak with others without feeling guilty or self conscious. The scars and remainings of his eyes were disturbing to the average person. He knew this. He was aware. Sunglasses allowed others to converse with him without having to become upset by his damaged features. They were a necessary wall that ironically allowed him to walk through more doors socially. It was an oddity in that way he suppose.
The older earth magi would consider the inquiry as he began to feel his way to the dining room table in order to take in another drink of caffeine. "Well today is my 'day off'." Gods, he would never be used to that phrase. "So we're going to be mostly focusing on errands." And another drink. It would be at this point he'd continue on until his first cup was emptied and being refilled. Indeed, coffee was his morning's life blood. "I'm pretty sure Stella is out for the day until we're expected over at Cherche's for dinner tonight."
The new cup of coffee would be allowed to sit aside to cool off light enough to be able to sip without burning any lips or tongues. In the mean time he was making his way to the bathroom, his hand using the wall as a guide. "So we're going to be grocery shopping. Maybe stopping at Nasrin's shop to pick Stella up a flowering orchid or bonsai .... Heh." Elijah would chuckle once. "I feel bad that I'm not comfortable getting her a pet in fear I'd step on them or trip on them constantly. So we'll see if she'll be happy with a plant that gives her flowers."
Making it into the bathroom his hands would busy themselves as he continued. The items needed were memorized in their homes. Deodorant. Tooth brush for a brief time of silence so he could brush the plaque from his teeth. A razor would be brushed by his fingertips as he considered the act but would eventually decide against. He could live with a bit of short moss stubble. Turning away from the sink, Elijah would look out into the hall where Pathos was probably standing. "Do I look okay enough to go out? Did I miss anything anywhere?" He'd ask, forgetting about the earlier pool of drool he had been resting his cheek in over night. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

The act of hovering around Elijah and ensuring that he didn't burn himself when refilling his coffee and simultaneously didn't notice her violating his personal space was a daily dance that Pathos had acclimated to quickly during their short time together. Turning the handle towards an outstretched hand; lifting the bottom of the mug upwards to avoid unnecessary splashes of hot liquid; gently tipping the pot upwards when the mug had just the right amount. It was almost too intimate, and she feared Elijah realizing just how routinely his assistant stood within breathing distance almost every morning. Thankfully, she didn't need to breathe, and he couldn't see her. Pathos didn't dare underestimate his other, more refined senses, however. After backing away a respectable distance, Pathos spoke up, "I will prepare an outfit for your visit to the Governess's house later, Mr. Kingsley," the android's even tone did well to hide the apprehension she felt towards revisiting a meeting with Cherche. Considering that their first meeting did not go as well as she expected it to, as well as the woman's promise to have a word with Elijah, Pathos calculated an extremely low probability of a pleasant dining experience. These worries were left unspoken; the assistant never questioned their master, and Pathos would not question Elijah. At best, she would need to devise a plan to stay out of Cherche's line of sight. While resisting the urge to guide Elijah to the bathroom, Pathos briefly recounted her information on Elijah's daughter, Stella. She knew precious little about the young girl, save for the unfortunate accounts of Elijah's personal journey to track her down; a journey that ended well for him. "Cats are known to be proficient at avoiding humanoids. There would be little risk of trodding upon it," Pathos tried to offer some advice after sensing the regret in Elijah's tone. It couldn't be easy, being deprived of your sight. At least she knew that any damaged parts, eyes included, could be repaired easily. Elijah wasn't so lucky. While Elijah was completing his business in the bathroom, Pathos gathered her attire -- pressed trousers, a bright red tie, and her overcoat and set them neatly on the couch. Her sleek, porcelain white chassis complete with metal adornments was hardly reminiscent of a nude body, but covering her mechanical parts went a long way towards alleviating the general distrust others might have felt for androids. Her head looked human enough, after all. Elijah's return to the living room put a halt to her own dressing procedure. Examining him closely, Pathos couldn't find any fault with his appearance save for a stubble on his face that could be considered 'unsightly' by her standards. "If you have dressed to impress, then consider me impressed, Mr. Kingsley," Pathos said with a light chuckle, "If you will allow me to get dressed, then I will be ready to depart," with that, Pathos was quick to slide her long, hoof-life legs into her trousers and fasten the tie around her neck. The coat came on and was buttoned without a hassle. Total time: one minute, a new record. At the door, Pathos stood patiently. Elijah Kingsley

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Blind eyes would blink behind those dark tinted glasses. It was so odd to hear such a pleasant feminine voice inform him that she was changing. The culture shock wasn't going to go away for a while. What could he say? He was an old soul ... in an old body. It took him a while to catch up to what the youth of today saw as normal.
"Ah, okay." He would respond. To those that were observant his usual tone of voice would seem slightly off. Nothing extraordinary or anything. But just enough to showcase that hearing such a thing had pulled the rug out from underneath his feet a tad there. "Take your time." He would follow up with only to hear that she was ready shortly afterwards. Damn, that was fast. With a smile that so brightly showcased his amusement the older earth magi would chuckle. "If only all women got ready as quickly as you." Now that was an "if only" that was worthy of day dreaming over.
And with that Elijah would feel for his white medicinal cane that usually hung by the front door and would be on his way out. "Could you get all the lights, Pathos?" When he lived by himself that had never been a concern. Hell, most of the lights didn't bother having light bulbs period. But then came Nasrin, Stella, Luca. His life had grown exponentially with sets of eyes that could see in the more recent weeks. That was now a required concern to keep his bills down. Luckily Pathos tended to be on top of such tasks. If there were any stray lights left on, she'd snag them before they left officially.
"Onto groceries." Elijah would announce as he'd collapse the white cane and slip it into his jacket pocket. The people around here knew his disability and ability in stride. While in his home he liked to thoroughly relax himself. But upon stepping out into the day? Elijah's sensitive feet within those sneakers would listen intently to the information they were giving him. With a grin to Pathos, the man would lead the way with confidence down the odd curling tree limb "sidewalk" his multi-floored Haven styled apartment building had to offer. A simple carved railing would save any less observant from falling miles downwards.
The trip would be a smooth one with minor hello's to those that greeted him. If Pathos would spark conversation, Elijah would reply in turn with no problem. If not, the two would arrive at the grocery store in question in decent time. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

As always, Pathos was one step ahead of her master; the daily routine they shared was practically imprinted onto her code at this point. "Yes, Mr. Kingsley," she said, observing a room that was already dark save for the natural sunlight that crept in through the open windows. In the years she'd spent being tested within Haven's android caretaker facilities, she learned that it was her duty to alleviate all burdens from whoever she was assigned -- that included financial burdens. The two departed after Pathos ensured the door was securely locked on the way out. As they walked, Pathos compiled a list of ingredients that Elijah commonly purchased and stored them in her memory bank for later reference; yet there was an issue. A dinner with the governess was a first, and what if Elijah desired something more fitting for someone of that social class? Going on an assumption wouldn't help, "Mr. Kingsley, a question," said Pathos, who kept her gaze firmly at Elijah's feet and watched for any large rocks he may trip over. "What manner of ingredients will you be purchased for the dinner tonight?" she asked, pausing every now and then to allow him his hellos to passerby. "If you will forgive my presumptuousness -- it would be wise to spend a little more for a meal with someone so important," Pathos explained, going off her general knowledge of governesses. One, they were typically rich. Two, they typically preferred affluent meals. Three, they could make someone's life very difficult given the power they wielded. A proper meal will most likely save Mr. Kingsley from a terrible fate, the android reasoned. It was logical, so very logical. Elijah Kingsley

Gotta get dat Gotta get dat Gotta get dat nom Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face “Of course, Pathos.” A tilt of the head would be a sign that Elijah was fully listening to the cyborg. Though he would say a soft greeting to a few young magi that passed on by. What manner of ingredients will you be purchasing for the dinner tonight?”
Ah, now there was the age old question. What to purchase at the store for a dinner? Fair enough, there tended to be quite the few options to choose from on those shelves after all. "Well to be fair, I highly doubt Cherche would welcome anything I brought over." The man would chuckle as his shoes sounded with every step lightly, bark lending its hand to giving traction. "Cherche takes alot of pride in her cooking abilities and to be entirely honest, she'd probably happen to make whatever I brought and have it be thirty times better."
"So no, we're not purchasing for tonight. Cherche is rather particular when it comes to her dinners." Elijah would crack his fingers in an arching of both his arms above his head. A single smooth movement that would lead to his hands being ushered back into his pockets. "What we're shopping for is groceries to last the household a week or so." Elijah would grip the natural occurring railing of the tree limb sidewalk they strode upon to assist in the declined descent. "Meal preps, snacks for Stella, that sort of thing."
In all honesty, Elijah hadn’t cooked in ages. A few voluntary MLM agents had often offered their services to their blind leader, as well as a few family friends like Kaveri. This had led to others choosing what he was going to eat, not vice versa. With this in mind, Elijah blindly glanced in Pathos' way. “Do you have any suggestions on what we should get? Have you seen Stella snacking on anything since she got in? Cinnamon rolls? Any particular fruit? I catch what I can but ... you know.” With having a mute daughter and a blind father who had not known sign language to begin with, communication in the household was definitely a strained one. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

"Oh," said Pathos, blinking a few times. "I see," of course, obviously the groceries were not for the dinner. The more the android considered this logic, the more it made sense. If one was invited to a dinner, one would expect the host to have something prepared of their own volition. Granted, Pathos had never attended such event before, so she could hardly blame herself for getting these details wrong. It just proved how much more she had to learn about the real world. Thankfully, Elijah was forthcoming with such lessons, even if he didn't realize he was a teacher of sorts.
Pathos's stance took on a subtle shift at the mention of Stella, Elijah's daughter and another of Pathos's charges; she found herself staring directly at Elijah to ensure maximum understandability. "Ms. Stella is fond of her sweets, which is not healthy for a child of her age," she said, recounting the numerous times she'd witnessed Stella nibbling on cinnamon or caramel flavored apples, much to the doting android's worry. "I recommend introducing a variety of fruit into her diet to gradually replace her fondness for unhealthy snacks," she paused to think of what could be acceptable, "Apples, bananas, and peaches are suitably nutritious, but... um, how do they taste?" Inquiring about the more 'human' aspects of life was never not awkward to Pathos, no matter how patient Elijah or Stella was with her.
As usual, Pathos's thoughts left her own predicament and returned to how she could improve Elijah's life. She was thinking of Stella now, and the unique challenge that a mute girl and her blind father brought to the act of caretaking. The android stewardess had taken to learning sign language in order to act as an intermediate between father and daughter, something she was sure they both appreciated. Still...there was more she could do. Then it hit her, "I am going to teach Ms. Stella how to write in braille," said Pathos, smiling at Elijah. "This will ensure you do not require an in-between if you two wish to speak to one another."
