Aaron had already laid down with his centaur legs tucked underneath him, but he still wasn't able to reach the bottom shelf properly. He'd tried bending his torso to bring him closer but he still wasn't able to get it. He sighed, straightening up and panting, trying to get his breath back. You'd think with as many lungs as he had, he would never get tired. That wasn't the case though. Especially considering he'd been struggling trying to get the box of herbs from the bottom shelf for the last forty five minutes. There was only so much he could do. He shook his head, standing back up.
"Let's hope I still have a box of the herb selections in the back. On a higher shelf." The plus side of his height was that he had never needed a ladder. However, sometimes he could use a more human, short person around. It would be handy. Perhaps he needed to hire someone. Maybe they could work at the shop while he was training someone in the attached dojo? He had no idea. Maybe all he needed to do was go and ask a neighbour to help him get the boxes. Maybe Aaron just needed to stop using the lower shelves in his general store. He really should know better by now than to do that. The shop wasn't too busy today. If he didn't get a customer soon maybe he'd close up shop and practice his forms in the dojo instead. It was a good thing he technically had two functioning businesses. There was only so much business he could get from the fellow magi of Haven.
He was in the back getting out some of the stock that needed resupplying when he heard the bell over the door ting. Aaron came out of the stockroom in back of the counter, his hooves making a reverberating sound as he walked out to greet hopefully a customer.

A woman pushed open a door and entered the room; her sunny blonde hair was flecked with precipitation, as was most of her business-like trench coat. Immediately, she registered a man behind the counter -- a tall one at that. "Hello, do you mind if I stay inside for a while? This weather is not agreeable, I'm sure you'll agree," she said, while her irises rapidly shrunk in towards the shopkeeper out of habitual curiosity. His body was severely malformed into a shape she couldn't recognize as humanoid, that much was plainly obvious. The android wondered how severe a magi's malformities could be, and whether or not the shopkeep was an advanced case.
She walked around the counter, then knelt down right next to him. "These are not feet," she deduced in a flat tone, "No toes, at least none that I can discern as 'toe-like'..." she peered up at the man with a blank expression as if approaching someone in their shop and asking about their deformities was the most normal thing in the world. She stood up straight and craned her head over to his hindquarters, "That appears to be...fur, correct?" Her irises shrunk in as her attention was drawn to this abnormality.
At that moment, her head snapped towards the shopkeep's face, "Do you mind my examination? I haven't seen anyone quite like you before." Her face was unreadable, neutral.

Oh. He'd been so busy stocking things and trying to reach things he hadn't even noticed that the weather had changed to rain. Go figure. He really needed to start paying better attention to things one of these days. He watched as she came towards him. She seemed to be taking stock of what he was rather than WHO he was. That sort of attitude admittedly annoyed him a little bit, but he was used to it by now. Aaron took the opportunity to look the woman over in turn, in the same way. She didn't seem to have magi traits. Curious. Haven was primarily a magi town because of its status of being safe from hunters. He hoped this person was magi positive. No toes, he heard her muse. And fur. The annoyance was starting to go away now that he was realizing the person was just very very curious. Then she asked to 'examine' him.
"Look, but don't touch. It would be impolite. I know I'm unusual but that doesn't mean I enjoy being a curiosity for people. In mythical stories, what I am would be called a centaur. As such, I have hooves and fur, as well as four legs and a tail. And if you look at me too deeply, I'll have to ask you to buy something." His mouth quirked up in a lopsided smirk. He walked out from behind the counter though so his entire back end was visible, including his horse tail. Seven feet tall and a centaur. Most of the time he did stand out. Aaron liked being unique, even though he had a lot of people stare. In Haven he could be safe, and he was forever thankful for the safe haven it was for him. He had grown up in the safety of Ikigai to begin with. Ethea was harsh, that much was certain. But Haven was proof it was not so harsh everywhere in the country.

"I see," Pathos's head tilted to the side, then she promptly turned her back to the centaur. "I don't have any money, so I will not stare at you," she said, looking at her surroundings for lack of anything more interesting to examine. Strange-looking plants fitted inside jars lined the shelves with names the android didn't recognize. She wandered over to a shelf and peered at the many-colored selection while making sure not to face the shop's owner. "Are you a gardener, sir?" Pathos recalled the crisp cleanliness of Elijah's apartment; maybe he might find sweet-smelling plants desirable.
Introductions have not been established, a small window bearing this notification briefly flashed in Pathos's vision. "My name is Pathos. It is a pleasure to meet you, and I'm thankful that you are letting me take shelter in your store. I will do my best to stay out of your way," she backed away from the shelf and arched her back into a rigid bow. Granted, she wasn't facing the recipient of this curtsey, but he would be intelligent enough to get the message she meant to convey.
With the greetings out of the way, she resumed her examination of the jarred plants.

On the one hand, that meant she wouldn't be buying anything. However, Aaron's eyes softened and seemed to twinkle at the bluntness and honesty he'd just been shown. Honesty was something he valued very much. She seemed to be looking around the store anyways, and then he heard the question about whether he was a gardener. Aaron smiled.
"No I don't garden. I know some earth magi who do though, and I buy some of what they grow to sell here in my general store. My thing is selling a variety, or training people to defend themselves." He was a combat trainer after all.
"And don't worry too much about staying out of my way. I know it's difficult to do that considering the space I tend to take up." Aaron shrugged with a grin on his face. She'd introduced herself too.
"Pleasure to meet you Pathos. My name is Aaron. I hope you'll forgive the question but you don't appear to be a magi yourself. Are you human or a cyborg? It can be a bit unusual to see anything other than magi here in Haven so it makes me feel very curious."

"I'm..." Pathos's voice trailed off, and there were a few seconds of silence before she resumed, "...an android," She spoke softly, poking a jar to watch a plant submerged in water swish inside. Why did I hesitate? Pathos frowned and crossed her arms; by her very design, hesitation was supposed to be an intentional act used to imitate natural human behavior, not an involuntary one. Regardless, Pathos realized that she had been silently considering this for some time now. "I think I am the only one of my model in Haven," another pause, "It is odd that I don't remember being manufactured here."
Briefly, she craned her head to the side and looked to Aaron, "I hope that I do not upset you. Some of Haven's citizens find me unnerving, and I do not wish to believe that such views are toward every android," she briefly checked her memory banks to recollect the moments where magi citizens would stare at her hoof-like feet with expressions she classified as suspicion. "If you feel the same, I would not be offended at being asked to leave."
She diverted her attention back to the herbs, "What are these for? I have never seen plants like this." The names on the jars were completely foreign to the android. Briefly, a question regarding how a man with horse-like deformities could be a combat trainer was considered by her curiosity protocol, but her empathetic sub-routines deemed it too tactless and rude, and thus it was discarded for now.

That made Aaron have his suspicions, but then he heard the woman's words about how some of Haven found her unnerving and that she wouldn't be offended if he asked her to leave. Aaron's eyes softened and he moved close enough to Pathos to pat her head gently, tousling her hair only a small bit, a friendly smile on his face as he did so.
"Nonsense. If Haven is all you know, then you belong here. And if you've experienced discrimination then you are no different than any magi who comes here to this city. It is called Haven for a reason. And whether you are magi, human, cyborg or android, if you don't have hate in your heart then you are, of course, very welcome in my store and my dojo whenever you feel like it." At eighty six, Aaron was by no means the oldest magi in Haven. However, he had worked hard to be respected in the community and to be a wealth of knowledge for anyone who wished to learn. In fact, he had a couple of students in his dojo who had taken to calling him Uncle Aaron. He didn't say it aloud, but he quite liked it. She asked the question about the plants and he shrugged.
"Honestly I'm not entirely sure." He turned the pot around and there was a label on the back.
"I got them from Earth magi I know, but I can be rather hopeless at remembering plants so I had them label them. So...that one you were asking for is medicinal. Combined with some other natural ingredients, it makes for a good sort of cough syrup. Also works for asthma apparently." He smiled.
"And just to let you know, if you have questions then you can ask them. I don't mind them as long as you're just genuinely curious. I just wasn't sure of how you were when you first came in. Some people treat me as a curiosity to be stared at. I'm sure you're not entirely a stranger yourself to people staring because they don't see you as completely as a person." Now that he thought about it, what an android would go through wouldn't be all that different from what he himself had experienced before.
"Harmless curiosity is perfectly fine with me though. People are bound to feel that way when they see a centaur, something that normally belongs to mythology."

"I do not have a heart," said Pathos, and an uncomfortable silence followed, to which she hastily added: "However, I am not programmed to hate." Pathos could not fault Aaron for his mistake considering how lifelike some androids could act. It was flattering in a way, being mistaken for a human, but the inherent dishonesty of allowing a misconception to go uncorrected did not sit right with her. That being said, Pathos didn't wish to give her thoughts on the inherent contradiction that was the tendency for sentient beings to feel threatened by one's curiosity if they found it offensive. At least the sentiment was nice, but Pathos knew full well that she had to tread carefully.
"They tend to stare when I am not fully clothed," Pathos said, picking up one of the 'cough syrup' jars and turning it over to get a better look at its contents. There was an uncomfortable silence after Pathos set the jar back where she found it. "Because my body is ostensibly mechanical," she said as quickly as before, and while walking towards one of the shelves in the back of the room, her hoof-like feet were visible just beneath the hem of her coat.
"What is this?" Pathos pointed towards a jar containing a murky clump of leaves floating in murky brown water. "If you have difficulty remembering plants, perhaps I might be able to assist you?" Pathos turned around to face Aaron, "My memory banks are finite, but setting aside a few terabytes for the purposes of education would not be an issue."

Androids did not have hearts...well Aaron didn't really know where to go with that one honestly.
"Erm...well if it isn't in your programming I guess that works too. In your heart was sort of a figure of speech I was using, but I guess it doesn't quite apply." He scratched his head for a moment. Then he heard Pathos say they stared when the android wasn't fully clothed and he arched an eyebrow.
"Well uhm...people generally do go around clothed regardless of whether they are an android or not. I get away with it because I'm half horse so they just see it as shirtless." He grinned.
"But they aren't used to androids. Most androids don't come here, and a lot of Haven magi don't leave here for obvious reasons. It's safe here. Still, they shouldn't stare. It isn't polite to stare at anyone after all. People are curious though by nature I suppose." He shrugged, and then heard the question about what was in the jar. He heard the offer to help and he grinned.
"Well I do have them labelled on the back, but I believe those are some kind of medicinal tea. Not entirely sure though it looks questionable and I'm never sure whether I want to touch it. Honestly I probably should have taken it off the shelf awhile back. I suppose that's unprofessional of me to keep it up there." He grabbed some gloves quickly from behind the counter, slipping them on before lifting the jar.
"Well if you'd want to help with the store that would be appreciated. I would pay you for your help, whether you were wanting to store information for education purposes or helping work the store." He smiled. He would put the offer out there. He had been looking for someone to help work the store just in case someone wanted lessons in his dojo.

In a way, Aaron's readiness to accept her as an employee was not entirely surprising for Pathos. Androids were polite, pliant, and tireless; perfect for the daily routine of a worker. Still, despite the obviousness of his decision, Pathos felt a sense of pride swell within her chassis. She was needed. Her help was wanted.
"Thank you," Pathos said, before finally turning around to face Aaron. Associates could not do business with one another without eye contact after all. "Most of my time is spent in the company of Mr. Elijah Kingsley, so I ask that you contact him in order to arrange a schedule that may benefit both you and I,' she smiled at him, then canted her head towards one of the shop's windows. The deluge of rain had thinned out into a light trickle. It didn't look quite as harrowing to navigate now.
"I will not take up your time any longer, Mr. Aaron. Thank you for this conversation," she opened the door and stepped outside. The android stole a backwards glance, "I look forward to returning," she said, shutting the door shortly afterwards.
The streets were starting to become repopulated by Haven's citizens now that the worst of the rain had subsided. With such a crowd, Pathos would have normally been on her best behavior, but she couldn't help punctuating every odd step with a little skip. A broad smile was plastered on her face, betraying the joy she'd felt at this opportunity. It seems Elijah would have another story to hear once she returned...
