It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me? Althea smiled up at the magi who she had bumped into. Good, she was glad that the magi didn’t seem offended that she had bumped into him. That was good in the very least. It meant that he wasn’t offended and was going to let her go with no repercussions to her on this glorious day of worship for her goddess. The flower was one of her favorites that grew in the gardens here. It really was amazing all that her goddess Arithelia provided for her.
Althea would grin as she was thanked. The magi was a very giving divine person, and on today of all days she would feel extra giving. Flowers were always a gift to others, one that the grand mother Arithelia provided. “You are quite welcome!” The cat magi was indeed feeling quite generous.
She would take her time in the gardens resting and rejuvenating, basking in the glory that was what all of her goddess had provided. She was more than willing to rest before continuing her duties. The magi woman knew she was getting older, and that rest was important to get whenever she had the chance. She would wave when Kaveri waved back at her, before continuing on her way.
As she made her way towards the two who seemed to be distressed, she would glance looking towards them. It was certainly odd to have others having problems on the day that was to celebrate all magi’s grand goddess. Althea warmly smiled as she approached.
Oh no, something really was wrong. Both of the participants in the conversation seemed to tense and tighten. That wasn’t good in the least. Turning towards the both of them Althea rested on her walking stick. “It is quite nice to meet the both of you. I don’t think I’ve seen either of you at the temple before.” Her eyes scanned those of the visitors, thinking back. No, it didn’t seem like she had. Her eyes brightened at the compliment from the purpled haired woman. “Arithelia provides peace for all who seek it. We have this sanctuary here, to help, heal, and rejuvenate those that need it most.” Grinning Althea’s eyes would flicker between the two, before resting on the purple haired woman again. “What do you wish to know? I’ve been in the employ of the goddess for the entirety of Haven’s duration, and before the genocide and camps I was a devout worshipper of our great mother goddess.”
As stated before Althea was there to help spread any information about the goddess she could. She wanted visitors, especially new visitors to see the grandness that was everything that Arithelia had provided. Turning to look at the blue haired magi Althea was all smiles still. “If you would prefer, I can help you both find peace. My abilities allow for certain attributes to be allowed.” She would only exercise such abilities if given permission of course.
If the two did not wish to partake in the use of her abilities, the priestess would feel no ill will. She was just trying to help. “Tell me, the two of you, what can I do to brighten your days?” The cat magi was adamant on the idea that those who were to celebrate should do just that! The celebration called for jovial times and friendly new meetings. “Perhaps you wish to visit one of the many rooms we hold in honor of the various magi traits?” She would tilt her head in contemplation. “Or a tour of the premises?”
Althea would glance towards sideways, as she looked out towards the rest of the temple. Her eyes caught hold of the fox magi she had bumped into earlier. The woman smiled and waved him over to join the conversation. “Sir, do you have any questions for me? I’m here to answer them.” Her face would grin, the wrinkles around her eyes showing. “Would you like to go on a tour as well perhaps?” She would glance back towards the mysterious woman with purple hair and person with the blue tail. “Please, let me help if I can.” It was her duty to help after all.

| I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS She was able to finish her short line of pleasantries with Luca before the priestess approached. “I’m glad you’re well. I’ve had no troubles so far; you did an excellent job. I can’t thank you enough.” That was about as far as she got before Althea approached them. She managed to nod to the short woman’s assessment. “It is my first time here.” She pulled slightly away, however, at the mention of her abilities. She wanted to use magic on them? Caroline wasn’t comfortable with that; not because she expected the priestess would bring her harm, but perhaps she would discover her cybernetic nature. There was no telling yet if she would be welcome here if she was found out. She raised her hand, palm facing Althea. “Ah, no thank you, Priestess. It is a kind offer.” And more offers came. The older magi was certainly eager to help, and to teach, and Caroline found that alone to be a calming aura. She turned to see the new magi approach from the corner of her eye; even the slightest movement alerted her- all those years of combat training both honed her perception and put her unnecessarily on edge. She tilted her head when the prospect of a tour came up. While she did not wish to be under scrutiny, it was a good opportunity, and so far there were no incidents. She nodded with a small, polite smile. “A tour would be perfect, actually,” she said. “If it is no trouble, I would be happy to take you up on your offer, Priestess. I would like to see and learn everything I can while I am here.” She pulled on her hood as the other magi was invited over. She didn’t recognize him, but the more people who focused on her, the more self-conscious she was about keeping her features hidden. |

Luca’s tail continued to twitch and flick in a jittery rhythm behind him as their encounter with the priestess dragged on. In every second that passed, he worried that somehow things might go horribly wrong… and it would be his fault, because he was too damn anxious to keep it together. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to accept Althea’s offer, but at the same time he wondered if doing so would give them away entirely. As much as he wanted to trust her, what if some feeling or sensation clued her in to what was going on, and she reacted poorly, and—? He took a breath, willing these thoughts to be silent while the other two spoke among themselves. Everything was fine. Everything was going to be fine. He just had to breathe, and… “Ah, no thank you.” Respond before the delay grew too long. “I’ll… I’ll be alright, but I appreciate the offer…” There, mission accomplished. Maybe. He hoped. The idea of a tour made him perk up a little, but Luca hesitated to accept the offer, glancing curiously over at Caroline. After her reaction to their unexpected meeting, he had to wonder if she would mind him coming along, too. If she did, he could always wander around himself, he supposed, but going along with someone who was really familiar with the temple seemed rather nice… Swallowing hard, he gave a small nod and replied, “A, um, a tour would be nice, but I don’t want to…” Another questioning glance flicked Caroline’s way. “Ah, I wouldn’t want to intrude or anything…” If the third magi approached, Luca would find himself unconsciously edging closer to the hooded cyborg. “But if you don’t think you would mind, then…”Caroline Vorlan Althea Santos Kai Stiel

There were no words. Kai took in the trio’s every reaction, sub-analyzing their tones and words in the back of his mind. The priestess was as cheerful now as when he met her. Bubbly, excite-, no not really excited. Eager? The magi gave a slight smile at nothing in particular. It’s just, the priestess reminded him of himself, well his younger self. The others, if he heard correctly, weren’t quite as ecstatic as the magi might have been but they were kind not to brush her away. He glanced toward the dark haired woman. Intrigued. Nothing in particular about her, just a side note in his brain. Her partner was a bit harder to read. His expressions seemed more honest and open, certainly, though, hm…. Kai couldn’t seem to place it. He shivered as a breeze passed through the crowd, next time he needs to bring something other than his trench coat for a jacket. When he turned to get a better view of who was who Kai was greeted by the delighted smile of the priestess. Her eyes seemed all encompassing, able to read his thoughts. Being a zero magi, it wasn’t completely outside the realm of possibility. Though, he offer of a tour seemed like a good one. “Hm…” Still unsure of the other two he waited to listen on their thoughts. Secretly he was hoping one of them would say no but no such luck. He shrugged defeatedly. Flashing a smile to the others he gave his answer. “Well… Why not, a tour sounds lovely.” Caroline VorlanAlthea SantosLuca Burke

It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me? Watching the non-magi, Althea smiled even wider. “It is rare for those that are not magi to enter the city, exceptions, of course, are made when the member is trusted by certain magi.” She would tilt her head and smile, “The day celebrating our great goddess Arithelia, the Spring Festival is the perfect opportunity to invite those who are trusted into our city. Arithelia will not turn away those who wish to understand and confide in her.” Her goddess might be distrustful, but she was inclined to give second chances, at least in Althea’s opinion.
Althea would nod at the decline from both the non-magi and the magi alike. It seemed her powers weren’t needed in such a circumstance, though they were offered freely. “I understand. Arithelia has blessed us this day indeed.” If one could overcome their own circumstances it would surely make the great goddess happy. That was what really mattered on this grand and glorious day. “If you need my services in the future, do not hesitate to ask.” The cat magi’s ears would twitch a little, “I am more than able to exercise my gift in effort to help others.”
The cat magi would grin as these younglings contemplated the tour or not. She was an excellent tour giver and would make sure that the tour would be grand, in an echo of Arithelia’s blessings unto this world. To the non-magi Althea would smile, “Of course, I am more than willing to teach everything I know, though,” Althea would trail off before laughing. “We might be here for a while if you wish to go that route.” Turning to the blue haired magi Althea would smile and nod. “All are welcome if they wish to depart on the tour.” The cat magi would grin. “I promise there will be no intrusion, the temple is open to all who wish to rejuvenate, rest, relax and restore faith in Arithelia.” A simple nod would be given to the fox magi. “All right then, it seems everyone is agreed, let us move along.”
"Before we continue on, tell me, what are your names if I may know?" It was better to get to know the guests after all.

| I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS She nodded once to Luca to reassure him that she did not mind if he came along, nor did she mind that he seemed to scoot closer to her, away from the stranger. She could certainly empathize with the feeling. But when Althea addressed her as a non-magi, she went as stiff as a board, save for her head swiveling around to see if anyone around them had heard the older woman so casually reveal her identity. “I-“ was all she could begin to say, followed by a few other random syllables in a nonsensical chain. Even if she said it gently, and with nothing but friendly implications, a surge of anxiety coursed through her. Eventually she hung her head before the much shorter priestess, defeated. “You noticed,” was all she said at first. At least it… didn’t seem to bother her? Well, no sense trying to avoid it. Having Luca nearby was comforting, too. “Thank you for the kind welcome,” she said. “I was brought to the city by my neighbor and close friend, but sought this place out myself. I know very little about Arithelia. I was hoping to find… Well, I am not sure. Answers, mostly.” But also comfort, even if she did not feel that she deserved it. She looked over to the third, who apparently would be joining her and Luca on the tour. As long as he didn’t seem to care if she was not a magi, she would politely, if nervously, smile and nod at him. She then turned her attention to the priestess once more, as she explained the tour would be lengthy. She didn’t mind, personally; Lelianna had friends, and would enjoy herself without Caroline being present. “Caroline,” she said. She didn’t volunteer her last name. Luca could introduce himself, and she was interested in knowing the other magi’s name. She wouldn’t go out of her way to socialize with him, not before knowing his opinions on cyborgs, and instead would follow Althea on her tour with respectful silence. |

The nod from Caroline helped reassure Luca that, yes, it really was okay for him to stick around, but that was about the only reassurance he was going to get just then. Between the second stranger, and the way the priestess seemed to know his friend was not a magi, despite her efforts to cover up, the young zero magi remained quite tense throughout their continued interaction. He didn’t say much while Althea and Caroline conversed, sticking to casting his gaze back and forth between the two of them, and occasionally over to the silver-haired magi who had joined them. There wasn’t much for him to interject, really, and even if there was it was probably for the better that he just kept his mouth shut. Save for a single, short nod to the priestess’ mention that the tour might take a while, Luca responded very little otherwise. At least, until his name was requested. “I, um… I’m Luca,” he mumbled, trying not to stare too intently at the floor in the process. Althea had been nothing but warm and welcoming to them thus far. He had no real reason to fear her at all… although it would be quite nice if he could bring himself to really remember that. Maybe later, after they all got moving… Whenever the tour would begin in earnest, Luca would follow silently along, sticking as close to Caroline as he could manage while still lingering toward the back of their small gathering. The fox gave a glance to the other women at the priestesses’ mention. Non-Magi? On another glance he could see that she was right. No magi traits. Kai shifted his gaze to her more interesting magi, associate. Definitely a magi at least, unless tails were a growing fashion amongst humans. Entertaining that would be but certainly confusing. He wondered at the relationship between those two but at the same time he found himself not really caring either. So what if she was human? Was that supposed to be impressive? Actual if he was honest with himself he was kinda curious, but he wasn’t really in the mood to investigate, and judging by her reaction, the lady wasn’t very interested either. Kai turned his attention to the priestess, trying to get a feel for the person underneath. But gave up a few moments later. He took a step back. Careful not to bump into anyone. Even though he still was upset with the crowd when he looked back on group in front of him he managed a weak smile. Something about the scene was rather heart-breakingly sweet. He almost felt happy when he remembered his brother and that sappy sweetness in his heart twisted to a low anger. More disappointment than anything. The magi then realized he was letting his mind wander again and sighed. He moved back towards the group, taking his spot next to the priestess, waiting for their conversation to cease and the tour to begin. Because honestly it was probably going to the be best part of his week. When the others had presented their names Kai would pause for a moment, waiting for the priestess to reveal her name, but then gave his anyway. “My name is Kai, it’s nice to meet you.” He nodded to the lady. “Caroline.” He smiled. Shifting his smile to the her magi friend he addressed him as well. “Luca.” A friendly smile gracing his features. Kai would try to pay attention during the tour, considering he probably wasn’t going to come back here again just to visit the temple. note: Sorry for the late post, and choppy sentences! It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me? Althea tilted her head as she observed the visitors on this holy day. That was rude of her after all, she didn’t know for sure that the purple haired woman wasn’t a magi, but she didn’t smell like one? Also there were no noticeable magi traits. Maybe she was mistaken. “I’m sorry…” Althea almost continued on with her apology, her tail drooping a little, but the woman seemed to affirm her suspicions before she could continue her thought. “Well, I assumed. That was awfully rude of me wasn’t it? I apologize either way if I’ve made you uncomfortable.” The explanation would be given to the non-magi with a sad smile. “I didn’t mean to offend you.”
The feline eyes would flicker towards the blue haired magi with apprehension. He was feeling worried, concerned, and was quite tense. Hopefully, after the tour was over, she would be able to pull him aside and give him a card. Maybe the worried magi would take up an appointment with her. She was more than willing to help.
Althea continued her conversation with the non-magi and smiled. “As long as you are willing to understand, Arithelia offers guidance to all who ask.” The cat magi would smile as she tilted her head towards the purple haired person. “I hope you are finding Haven to be just that, a haven, especially for those of Arithelia’s children and worship. We owe our lives to our goddess, and today is the day we give thanks for our Savior.” She would smile and try to meet the shy woman’s eyes. “I’m here if you have questions.”
It seemed that the fox magi was having his own thought process. The cat magi wasn’t one to judge, especially on days like this one when the whole situation was loaded with complex feelings and intricate designs of thoughts. While this was a celebration, many viewed it as a time for mourning as well, saddened by those who hadn’t been saved.
The cat magi continued to observe the blue haired magi out of the corner of her eye, and would become increasingly tenser as the magi himself did. Her powers were pinging like crazy, but she tried her best to keep them down. At least he would agree to a tour! That was certainly progress.
At the woman’s name, Althea would smile and nod. “It is very nice to meet you Miss Caroline.” She would turn towards the others with a smile as they introduced themselves as Luca, “The same to you Sir Luca.” She really didn’t want to scare this magi off. Althea got the feeling that if she had spoken out of turn Luca would bolt. That wasn’t what she wanted at all. When the fox magi gave his name, she would smile. “It is wonderful to meet you as well Kai.”
With the introductions formally over the cat magi would turn to face the temple. She would lead them through the one section of the gardens, stopping for a moment so they could observe if they wished. “This is the serenity garden, dedicated to Earth Magi, and those who find peace in nature. Funny story, it was modeled after a mysterious earth magi, who lives in the woods who is rumored to have multiple gardens, spanning miles of the forest that keeps us hidden from Humans.” She smiled as she thought of her friend.
Once that was done, Althea would gently lead the guests through a side door, so they could avoid the crowds that were spamming the temple on this day of worship. “There are multiple rooms dedicated to the gifts that the goddess has given us. Are there any in particular that you wish to visit?” The Cat magi would be walking backwards as they continued down the hall. “You can see the walls are adorned with various images of our goddess, and plants are allowed to roam free while we cultivate them.” The various flowers that lined the hallways only added to the beauty of the marble and obsidian floors.
“I have access to the entirety of the temple so all is available to visit.“ She thought a moment, and tilted her head as her ear’s twitched. “We could also visit the Hall of Remembrance if you would like, it is closed off to the public currently to be repaired, but the granite walls are filled with the names of those that the hunters have taken from us. Our lost ones are listed there.” The hall was easily one of the largest rooms in the temple. “You can light a candle to remember the forgotten if you wish.“ She would offer a sad smile to those that were following her. “If you don’t wish to, we can continue elsewhere as well.”

| I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS “Ah, no, it’s not… offensive. I was just…” She looked around the area and lowered her voice. “This is a celebration for magi. I didn’t want to disturb anyone with my presence.” She relaxed a little. It was nice to hear that this priestess was talking about Arithelia’s grace and kindness, given her negative experience not long ago with another individual. Still… much of her did not expect any sort of grace or forgiveness granted to her. Not after what she has done. “Thank you, you are very generous. I am here to learn. Haven is… an amazing place. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I am grateful for the chance to be here.” She followed dutifully as the small magi lead them on a tour into the garden area, and listened while taking in the views. It was beautiful! Just as she was turning her thoughts to Lelianna, Althea told them about the earth magi after whom it was modeled. She blinked. There’s… no way that was a coincidence? “Pardon me, priestess,” Caroline said. “The earth magi who tends to the gardens in Arecia… do you mean, by chance, Lelianna Varna? She… she is my good friend, the one who brought me here. She also has many, many miles of gardens in the woods, and this area… it reminds me of some of them.” If it was indeed her, Caroline would not disguise her awe. She knew Lelianna was amazing, but to have the garden in the temple modeled after hers? And… was it her gardens who kept Haven safe? Or did Althea mean the forest itself? She kept the question quiet in her mind. Knowing her neighbor, she wouldn’t be surprised if the answer was both. “She is… quite amazing, isn’t she?” She looked around at Althea’s gesturing. Indeed, plants were growing freely, much like Lelianna’s garden. She wasn’t certain which room to start with until Althea mentioned the Hall of Remembrance. Her body froze and her mind sent a chill down every one of her synthetic nerves, wracking her body in a hollow, cold feeling. The granite walls are filled with the names of those that the hunters have taken from us. How many names would that be? Thousands, easily. More, probably. How many names would she recognize? Files, dossiers, reports, hunts, investigations… names swirled through her mind. How many names were carved into the wall due to her? How many lives had she taken without a second thought? How many families were shattered? How many dreams were dashed? How many still lived a life of sadness at having their families stripped from them? Our lost ones are listed there. Even her cybernetic body shivered. Lost… no, that was too gentle a way of putting it. Taken. Stolen. Murdered. Those were the words Caroline would use. Those were the things monsters did, what they lived to do. Her fist clenched and curled. She flinched, and blinked, suddenly aware she was standing frozen in front of the three magi. She reached for her hood and pulled it further over her head. “Sorry,” she said. “I… Wish to spend time in the Hall of Remembrance, if I may. Please.” No, she had to, whether she wanted to or not. She had to face what she’d done. She ran from that life, started anew, and was trying to make endless amends for a debt that could not be repaid, but she could not escape the deeds that were done. They were quite literally etched in stone, never to be forgotten, nor forgiven. Even after her mind and body decayed, the temple would remember. Arithelia would remember. The thought filled her with… relief, rather than dread. Perhaps if the world remembered, such things would not happen in the future. |

[attr="class","ig"] [attr="class","kikan"] “Sir Luca.” Sir. The priestess had called him “sir”. Luca made a face at that, half uncomfortable, half confused as to how he had earned himself such a title, but said nothing as the group got moving. Most of the time in the garden, the young zero magi spent in awestruck silence, until a somewhat familiar name filtered through his distracted haze. Lelianna Varna the earth magi… Although he had never heard a last name, the rest that was mentioned seemed to fit. How many magi could there be with gardens in the forest of that name, anyway? “I think I met her earlier,” Luca told Caroline quietly, absently reaching toward some of the flowers she had woven into his hair then. “She… she seemed really nice…” Of course, the conversation shifted as they went along, and when Althea mentioned the rooms dedicated to the elements, Luca nodded tentatively to her. “I-it would be nice to see the one for zero magi, at least…” How would his own element be represented, he wondered. If the rest of the temple was any indication, it would probably be yet another beautiful room, but the only real way to find out was to see for himself, wasn’t it? First, though, there was another stop to make. The Hall of Remembrance came first, as both he and Caroline seemed to have decided. “I… I’d like to visit the Hall as well, please…” he murmured, eyes flicking away from the others for a moment. It was a small thing, but at the very least, he had a couple of candles to light, should they stop there. Kai wasn’t an expert on reading people’s emotions, he hadn’t learned the empathetic skills of other Zero magi yet, but Caroline’s word seemed genuine. An irrational rage welled underneath the surface but was quickly subdued. “I’m glad you are enjoying the opportunity.” he said to himself. Not really expecting anyone to answer. The next time the priestess addressed him he nodded in response.. “Thank you, the feeling is reciprocated.” The beginnings of a smile dawning on him. With that said, there was nothing left to do but start the tour. The first stop was a rather impressive garden. Kai took in a deep breath of lively air. This story of the mysterious earth magi though, he couldn’t quite wrap his mind around miles of gigantic gardens. His mind quieted as he saw the plant life. They were practically wrapped around each other, almost like they were hugging. Idly he wondered if plants had emotions, well, ones we could understand at least. An image of his brother popped into his head. Jonathan was always mysterious but Kai wouldn’t say he was emotionless. He got into enough arguments in the family to prove that. When Kai heard of the hall of remembrance he could feel an instinctive pull toward the place. He bit his lip idly, holding back the toss and turns of his mind. Suppressing the chaotic feelings, though, recently, he wonders why it seems like he never feels anything. He'll have to talk to his brother when he gets back, it's been too long since either of them spoke to each other. And honestly, it's starting to take it's toll. He moved closer toward the others. Nodding when it was appropriate. Though it might seem like he was absent-minded Kai was actually paying attention to the conversation next to him, he simply thought they might like a bit of privacy considering they all were still strangers to each-other. He glanced toward Caroline and Luca then to Althea. “I seems that we’re all thinking the same thing.” He shrugged. His thoughts darkening behind those pale eyes. He didn’t know about the others, but he had some candles to light. Luckily, he didn’t say that out loud. He thought humorlessly. It sounds a lot cooler in his head. It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me?
Althea would tilt her head looking towards the woman. “As long as you wish us no harm, and are here to worship the goddess, learn from her blessings, you are more than welcome here.” Althea didn’t think anyone would be stupid enough to intrude on a holy day, and if she had been brought, then a magi must have trusted her. That was enough for Althea.
Today was a day for kindness and acceptance. It would not do to be wary of those around her too much especially when they wanted to learn and wanted to find something new given by the goddess. There was much wisdom to be gained from her goddess, and Althea was more than willing to spread the word if she had to. “You are quite welcome.” Her smile would remain as she continued the conversation.
Althea would lead the three in her group through the temple, stopping at a certain area to allow observation and commentary as it would flow naturally in the conversation. She could totally be a tour guide. Totally.
At one of the stops, Caroline asked her a question and she nodded in response. “Ah, yes I do.” The smile would come naturally to the small cat magi. "We are working on implementing some of her other designs into the gardens as well.” The zero magi would smile, and nod. “I’m glad that you were able to come with Ms. Varna, it shows her good judgment.” She would tilt her head in thought. It seemed that Caroline was Ms. Varna’s guest. How interesting. She would have to ask the earth magi about this at a later date in time. At the other comment, Althea would nod. “Ms. Varna is particularly gifted yes, blessed be Arithelia for her many talents.” Turning towards Luca Althea would smile again, “She is incredibly nice, yes, Did you know I first met her when she was trying to help a doe get back up again?” Althea would smile fondly, remembering the scene. Ms. Varna was certainly nice after all. The tiny cat magi would smile as she heard the wish to visit the zero magi room. That room, in particular, was one that she loved, not just because it was her own trait. It had more to do with what it symbolized. “We can certainly visit the zero magi room as well.” Althea would smile at Caroline’s words. It seemed she herself had lost some in the massacre that was the genocide. There were many forms of grief, and Althea understood all of them. She would nod at the woman and the blue haired magi. “To the Hall of Remembrance then.” It seemed all three of her guests wished to visit the hall, and she would oblige. “This way.”
Althea silently led the group through some side passages of the temple. The room they were looking for was one that she traveled the path too often and knew well. It was somewhat of a hard journey for her. She had lost those the closest to her, but it was her job as a priestess to lead others here. Eventually, the group came to a simple door, wooden in design, plain and unassuming. There was a stark difference here, from the rest of the temple. The Hall of Remembrance wasn’t a place for ostentatious beauty. The names spoke for themselves.
Althea would open the door to the hall, and all would be greeted with the image of black obsidian walls, thousands of names etched into the stone, spanning from the floor to the ceiling. There was a slim path in the middle of the room that led to a small alter, lit with candles. If observed, the group would see the candles lit the names that were etched into the floor on either side of the path. Althea would wince, those that had come first to the city, to the temple had those they had lost etched into the memory of all magi continuously, simply by being the first to mark names of those that would refuse to be forgotten. Althea refused to look at the names that she had entered.
A pair of earth magi stood at the center, guarding the small alter. The ebony steps that led up to it, were lit, dim and soft. If approached they would ask that names that were to be entered into the walls would be written down, and spelled. This was too sacred a place to have spelling mistakes. If the two were approached, those that approach would be handed a candle to light. There were spaces where they could be placed and side alcoves where people could pray. The Hall of Remembrance was aptly named.
Standing off to the side of the door little Althea would give a sad smile and motion towards the room with a seemingly endless ceiling and set of engraved walls. “This is the Hall of Remembrance, if you wish to add names to those that are lost, approach the center alter, the two guards can engrave the walls after you’ve written the names down in the book.” Althea’s eyes darted towards the book that was at the center of the alter. She would sigh, thinking of how large this volume had become. Too many they had lost. Her eyes flickered to the almost filled bookshelf. “I’ll be here when you are ready to depart.” The zero magi would take a candle and stand by the door, the light flickering on her face.

| I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS “She is something else entirely, isn’t she?” Caroline mused. She cracked a smile at the mention of their meeting. “I did not know that, but it doesn’t surprise me at all. I’m more surprised she didn’t bring it back to her home and adopt it; she has quite a way with animals.” The jovial mood faded somewhat quickly though as Althea led the group silently towards the Hall of Remembrance. She closed her eyes and took breaths to center herself. It was a rare moment in her life where she wanted to back out, to avoid seeing the names of people she killed, or helped kill. But… she couldn’t; it was too big of a step towards freedom from her past. She had to face what she did, quite literally- she had to see their names, see those who may mourn for them, and understand that they were people she killed, living people with hopes and families and dreams, snuffed out too soon by Caroline’s hand. Her fingers curled and uncurled, directed by anticipation and anxiety. It was good that she didn’t need to breathe, for the sight of the Hall would have taken the air from her lungs. So many names… gods help her. They’ve lost so many, and she had such a large part… She closed her eye and clenched her fists tight. She couldn’t run now. She couldn’t. There was a very important debt to be paid here. She nodded silently at Althea’s instructions and walked to the book with shaky steps. She took the pen in hand and carefully wrote a single name. Tori VorlanShe stepped back and nodded to the guards. She waited patiently for the others to take their turns, if they had any to add, and waited for the name to be added. With trembling hands, she placed the lit candle in the alcove above the fresh name. It may very well be the only candle lit for the unknown street-dweller, the pickpocket who gave herself for something better. This would not be Caroline’s last trip here; she promised this to herself, and to the girl who was taken from the world too soon, in a way that was much too cruel. She closed her eye and knelt before the wall. Outside, she would be silent and still, but inside she said a lengthy prayer. Tori. Maevia told me your name. I do not know if prayers work, if you will hear or feel this message, but I owe it to you to try. An apology seems insufficient, maybe even insulting, for what I have done, but I apologize nonetheless. The woman you saved is alive, and set up to have a better life than the streets. Perhaps you are disappointed that I am alive; part of me is, as well. If the world were just, our positions would be swapped.
I refuse to let your death be in vain. I will not be forgiven, nor ask to be; I will simply use the opportunity you gave me to prevent more deaths. I have taken your last name not as an insult, but as a reminder, and with it I ended that old life and will keep your memory alive.
I do not deserve to be here, alive, to say these things to you. But the magi here do not deserve death, either. I will make this world a safer and better place for your people, Tori. Perhaps in the next cycle, the world will be a kinder place for you. I pray to all the gods and goddesses that this is so, and I dedicate my life to making it a reality.
Tatara and Arithelia guide you to a better place, Tori Vorlan. When you killed Caroline Enthaupten, you did the world a favor, and I will return it.She opened her eye and wiped a bit of moisture that was forming at the corner. She stood without a sound and gently stepped over to Althea’s side. “Thank you,” she whispered. She waited patiently for the others to finish. She glanced at the names once more, and wondered how many might simply be missing; how many perished without family, or alongside them? How many had records destroyed? Caroline did take a databank with her… perhaps she would return and give each of the forgotten a place where they can be remembered. |

Kai said nothing as he was lead by Althea. The longer they walked the more relaxed his expression became but underneath was a steel casing over his heart. Next to him he kept note of the increasingly tensity displayed by their human companion, there was something there he was sure. There’s something here as well His secondary voice reminded. Though they both knew that already. Eventually they were greeted by a blank wooden door, unimpressive. But it carried this, weight, to it. Almost as if could look down and judge you. The door had deemed them worthy of entry and the group slowly shuffled inside. This time Kai didn’t have to look at the others to know their reactions. He was confident they were as surprised as him. Massive walls of black stone, and carved into it thousands of names in small script. The effect was breath-takingly haunting. Instantly he took to the walls. It took a while but surely enough the names ‘Yukata’ could be seen. His sorrowful eyes dropped on the names. Hina & Shirou Yukata. Oh you poor sweet fool he thought to himself. Kai hadn’t been to this hall before and he wasn’t aware anyone else had known his aunt and uncle in the relocation camps. He’d have to pay Mr Akashi a visit, he was probably sulking and lonely right now. Like he has been since his aunt died. The kitsune’s tail hung low. Kai’s family had never been the same since the breakout. They survived, not quite happy, not as smiley. He probably developed his sympathetic gifts to help if family deal with the loss. But how could you project happiness when you yourself was hurting on the inside? Despite the tightness in his chest not a single tear would cadent down his cheeks. Impulsively he brushed his hair aside and continued to stare at the names. The stories behind them formed in his mind, and the lives they might have lived. He forced himself away from the cold walls, tearless, as he moved toward the others. Looking at them he wondered about their stories as well. Althea seemed worried. No, perhaps, more dishearted. Briefly he wondered if she recognized any names here. Caroline seemed to at least. Don’t be rude he scolded himself. If anything she probably lost someone. He could sympathize with that. Kai was unsure what she was so tense about, and as much as he wanted to go other there and help her, it felt like an invasion of privacy. His thoughts drifted to the other zero magi in the room. What about Luca though? Caroline VorlanAlthea SantosLuca Burke
