Notes Come on over, neighbor
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Rain pitter-pattered rhythmically against the canvas of Caroline’s tent. While not the largest tent, it was high quality, and would be sufficient for even a human to live out of. It had insulating material and was coated with a hydrophobic layer; she had put it up on wood so the water would not seep in, even with heavy and constant rainfall. Caroline busied herself inside, trying to rearrange her belongings to make room for a second person to sit comfortably. It hadn’t been a situation she expected to come up, but she made due with what she could. On the outside, the tent was wonderfully camouflaged, hidden away in a remote nook behind thick trees and tall brush, and made even more hidden with some help from Lelianna. It almost looked as natural as the magi’s house. Crates and boxes sat under tarps, covered and well-hidden with more vegetation. She didn’t need much in the way of personal goods, but she stocked up on things such as ammunition, spare parts, and things of that nature before setting off to Arecia. It may be spring, but the air was cool with the constant rain. It was warmer inside the tent, but far from a well-heated home. Inside were more boxes, bags, and a few blankets, which were now arranged to form a sort of seating area. Caroline sat there, waiting for Lelianna to arrive. A small, portable heating lantern sat in the middle of the tent, providing extra light against the darkness of a dark, cloudy day under layers of brush and tree canopies. It was quite an intimate setting, and anyone who wasn't Caroline would have realized it immediately. She clutched a leather binder in one hand. With a smile, she looked at it, and ran her fingers over the smooth exterior. It was the object she made sure was there when she thought Lelianna was sneaking around her tent so many weeks ago. And it was the reason she invited her to come over today. When the magi did enter through the tent flap, she’d be met with a smirk. “Wet enough out there for you?” She tossed the magi a towel and pat the seat next to her. “I’m sorry it’s not a large place, but it’s dry, and at least the dome’s high enough that you won’t poke any holes with those antlers of yours.” When Lelianna settled in, Caroline looked over to her. “Thank you for coming today,” she said. Not that she’d actually told her what the invitation was all about. No doubt the magi was curious. And if she had her constant friend in tow? Caroline would greet the sloth and motion nearby to a sling she had set up for Stewart to rest in, if he so chose.

► Of course it had to be raining. Today of all days it had to be raining! The one time Caroline actually invited the druid over, and she was going to show up drenched.
"You had something to do with this, didn't you?" Accused the magi as she glared up at the passing trees. They, in return, said nothing. Yet she could hear the creaking laughter and the amusement registered in the back of her head. The hermit huffed and kept moving as quick as she could without tripping. Due to her antlers wearing a hood wasn't an option. And while she normally would care too much for getting soaked so long as she stayed warm, this was different. She was going to her neighbor's house! All this rain was going to get over Caroline's stuff! That wasn't good at all!
Unfortunately Lelianna wasn't really given much of an option.
By the time she managed to get to the cyborg's home the rain had thoroughly washed her. Thank the gods she didn't wear white shirts, but her clothing was definitely clinging to her when she stepped inside the tent. Not only that but her red locks were shiny with the water they'd absorbed. Ironically the flower wreath in her hair was actually looking quite perky from the drink they'd gotten. The hermit gladly accepted the towel and got to drying off her hair first, staying to one side of the tent while she dripped and dried off. "Wet enough! I swear Arecia was leaving holes in the leaves just so the rain could drench me!" The druid said in a huff, trying to get as much water out of her as possible.
Indeed, as she pulled her hair to the side it did reveal the little sloth clinging to her like a backpack once more. He'd been slightly better off, protected by Lelianna's hair, but he was also wet. After drying off a majority of her hair and clothes, she moved on to dry him. It was the best she could do, so she eventually plopped down right next to her neighbor. In light of her drenched state any romantic mood the scene might have contained was lost on her. But she was genuinely happy to see Caroline and offered her a smile. She could find happiness there at least.
It certainly wouldn't be found outside!
Placing the towel down first, Lelianna sat. Stewart was in her arms, and though he looked at the sling he didn't move towards it. No, when Lelianna set him down Stewart began his slow crawl to start climbing up Caroline instead. Lelianna blinked at the journey but soon bit her lip to keep from laughing. She still snickered, so it didn't really work. "Thanks for inviting us, Caroline. Looks like Stewart's definitely happy to see you again." If the fact he was halfway up the other woman's arm was any indication. "Um...do you want me to...?" The now smiling (despite running through the rain not a few minutes earlier) magi gestured towards the sloth slowly making his way onto Caroline's shoulder. And gods only knew if he'd stop there.

Notes I didn't want to drag it out to a huge post by diving into it just yet.
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Caroline waited patiently as she dried herself and her companion. The heat lamp would certainly help along with the towel, but they were both rather soaked. It must have been raining harder than she expected. “You know, with your talents you can probably weave an umbrella out of sticks and leaves next time,” she pointed out. She watched the determined, steady climb of Stewart up her arm with a bemused look on her face. He really did seem to enjoy climbing her whenever he got the chance. She shook her head. “No, if he wants to climb, it’s no trouble. He seems dry enough.” She looked back up to Lelianna. “Drier than you, at least. Your flowers seem to be enjoying the weather.” Stewart’s steady climb barely even registered with Caroline. Between her strength and muted feeling of her skin, she was only vaguely aware that a slightly damp ball of fur was sliding slowly up towards her head. She looked back down at the binder in her hands and closed her eye for a few moments. When she opened it, she turned to her magi companion with a gentle smile. “I was thinking about our discussion a few days ago,” she began. “And about all of our time together. I realized that I know so much about you, and yet you know almost nothing about me, or my history. I am not very used to talking with people who do not already know me. It was not my intention to stay closed off. So that is why I invited you here today; I would like to share more about myself with you. And… I will have a favor to ask of you later on.” She set the thin binder on her thigh, closest to Lelianna. While still stilted with her words (but still leagues better than their first few encounters), it was clear that she was not feeling forced to share. She wanted to. In fact, nervous was the feeling she was experiencing at the moment, but it was such a foreign feeling to the cyborg that she had a hard time putting a word to it. “Before I came to Arecia, I lived in Felici. I took what I needed with me. This,” she said, and pat the journal gently, “is the only thing I took that has… sentimental value to it. It mostly contains photographs. I thought it would be a good way to talk about myself; if you are interested, I would be happy to go through it with you.” She looked to Lelianna expectantly, as if waiting for a confirmation that she would like to do this. It wasn’t like Caroline to hesitate like this, but she wanted to make sure she wasn’t… boring her? Making her uncomfortable? The more time she spent with her, the more aware she found herself with regards to Lelianna’s feelings. Nerves, excitement, anticipation, anxiety, concern; they were new feelings that, while hard to describe, were rounding out her emotions; it was the most human she felt since… well, since she could remember.

► Lelianna froze for a second. A heartbeat passed before she stomped her foot. "Awwww fizzlesticks why didn't I think of that!?" Seethed the magi for a moment before she continued with her drying. It would have helped her so much on the way over! But in her haste to visit the cyborg the idea hadn't even passed her thoughts. Or it had and she'd been to excited to realize it. It was honestly hard to tell.
Lelianna did end up by Caroline's side though and watched the progress of Stewart steadily scaling the other woman. If she really did let him do whatever he wanted, the furry little thing would continue climbing until he was perfectly perched on the cyborg's head like a bandana. Once there he wouldn't move, seemingly content with his new perch on top of purple hair. Lelianna would have laughed if she wasn't paying attention to what her friend was saying.
Caroline was...actually sharing some of her past with Lelianna? Though surprised, the hermit was ecstatic that was for sure. Though there was a brief moment of worry. Had she pushed things? Did Caroline really want to share this? Was she ready? But according to her, she did. So Lelianna only gave her a warm smile and a nod. Mention of a favor was interesting, but the redhead had more attention towards whatever Caroline was willing to reveal.
It turned out to be a journal of sorts with pictures. Something that held sentimental value to the woman currently holding it. Lelianna gazed at it with clear curiosity before those green eyes of hers snapped back up to Caroline. If she was interested? Of course she was interested! the magi's whole face lit up. "I...I would love to hear all about it! W-Whatever you're willing to share with me that is." She added hastily with a bit of sheepishness. That faint suspicion that she might have pushed for this to happen still lingered in the recesses of her thoughts. "I meant it when I said I wanted to know more about you." Now that part was especially sincere; she really did want to learn more about her neighbor.

I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Her eye drifted up to regard her new fuzzy accessory. “Comfy up there?” She asked once her stopped moving. Go figure she thinks about him and makes a hammock, and instead he wants to be her hat. But hey, good on him for going for what he wants. She ran her fingers over the binder again. “I was hoping you would be interested. I think it’s time I told you more about myself.” With a faint smile, and a hint of nerves, she opened the cover of the binder to the first page. A single piece of white paper sat behind a laminated shield, and simply said “Caroline.” She turned that page, and the history lesson was underway. Several photos lay against a white background on both pages, covered by a thin plastic to protect them and keep them in place. There were two children in the photos, a boy and a girl, with somewhat tan skin and similar features. Some pictures had them alone, and some with them together. The range of pictures seemed to cover years, maxing out at around ten or eleven at their oldest. They were happy pictures; playing in the park, opening presents at birthday parties, making silly faces for the camera. Caroline’s expression lit up as she saw these. “Farha and Vidal,” she said. “My niece and nephew. Right now, she is twelve, and he is eleven. They are good kids, but a bit too energetic and curious to stay out of trouble.” She laughed. “I’m not sure if they’re more or less of a handful than the cubs, but they certainly bite less.” She would talk through each one. ‘Oh yes, that was on her birthday, where she fell in the pool and lost her cake,’ or ‘And that was the last time he tried to climb that tree,’ and so on. Caroline was clearly enjoying herself as she recounting these memories and stories. She turned the page again. The kids were still the subject, but now Caroline was in a few of the pictures as well. Even back before her… freedom, being around the kids brought out a mostly human side of her, one capable of laughter and fun. There were pictures of her holding them both up with one hand, and her letting them win at play wrestling, and her walking in the park holding each of their hands with one of hers. She sighed. Of all the people she left, she missed them the most. It was a bittersweet feeling. She was glad for the memories but… it was unlikely she would ever see them again. Maybe they didn’t even want to see her. She was silent, leaving only the gentle pattering of rain to fill the air, and gently ran her fingertips over the picture of her holding their hands. “Farha will be starting high school this winter. I take pity on her teachers; they do not know what a fighter they have waiting for them.” She chuckled once. “She learned a few things from her stubborn aunt, I suppose.”

► The only answer Stewart gave in response was to curl up more on the woman's head before completely settling. For the remainder of Caroline and Lelianna's time together, unless disturbed, the little creature would contently sleep there.
As Caroline opened up the book, Lelianna scooted a little closer. Any chance of her interpreting anything else to this whole situation was lost. Her neighbor was willing to talk a little bit about her past, so the druid was going to make sure she darn well listened. Even if she got close enough their legs were barely touching. Lelianna didn't notice. She only had eyes for the photos.
The pictures showed two kids. Farha and Vidal were their names. And according to the purplette they were nearly as much of a handful as the bear cubs. Lelianna laughed lightly at that. "Then they must be a healthy pair." She commented playfully, but otherwise stayed relatively silent as Caroline went on. There were so many pictures! And so many stories too! Lelianna was as enthralled to hear about one as she was the other, and her interest in the pictures- no matter how mundane the story behind them might have been- never waned. They looked like a lively duo that certainly did remind the redhead of the cubs. Lelianna found herself softly smiling before long and holding that expression subconsciously throughout.
Though as the children aged up finally there appeared pictures where the woman holding the book was features. With these more attention was paid towards the purplette than the kids. Caroline looked...happy in these photos. The redhead didn't even need Caroline to say anything; it was abundantly clear how much she loved these nephews of hers. It was precious. A love that reminded Lelianna of her parents and what they had shared. It warmed Lelianna's heart as much as it made it ache. Looks like they had something in common to a certain degree.
The druid stole a glance over at Caroline when she sighed. The action coupled with her focus on the picture really confirmed it for the hermit. Green eyes followed along to look back at the picture as silence spread between the two of them for a bit. Uniquely enough she didn't feel so uncomfortable in it. And when Caroline did speak again, the soft smile on the hermit's face grew. "From what I've seen, I don't think that's such a bad thing." The hermit said. It felt right to keep her voice down and gentle, so she did. Talking loud felt like it would ruin this moment; make Caroline change her mind about the whole thing. "And if she's even half as strong as you are, I doubt anyone's going to stand a chance against her. Not even bears."
The last part was said a little humorously with a glance over at Caroline before her gaze turned back to the picture. "They sound like wonderful people. I can see why you'd love them so much." Because what else could the cyborg be showing in those pictures with her nephews other than love?

Notes I think if Lelianna has questions it will sort of shape how this thread goes
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS She turned her head slightly towards Lelianna at her compliment. Not a bad thing? Hmm… well, Farha was a good kid. Didn’t take shit, challenged everything, and defended her brother from everything. Maybe Caroline wasn’t all bad when it came to them. She chuckled soft and low at her followup. “If her body can match her spirit, she’ll give me a run for my money someday. She’s very into sports, so at least it all goes to good use.” She turned the page. Her family was still the focus, but now there were pictures of a light-skinned woman in a wheelchair, and a man with skin that screamed “Surajan-born.” They were clearly the parents of the children. “That is my sister, Nadia, and her husband, Saeed. She is a schoolteacher, and he an electrician.” The odd thing was that Nadia and Caroline looked about as alike as any two strangers on the street. Caroline didn’t notice this, of course. And she didn’t know that her face was changed slightly during the rebuilding process; not completely, but subtle enough to sort of set her apart as a black sheep in the family. There were a couple more pages of these four and Caroline, each with an explanation and a story. She kept talking as Lelianna kept showing interest. Then the pictures turned to new faces entirely. One picture had a row of people in police uniforms standing for a photoshoot. The woman in the middle seemed to be the focus, and held onto a plaque that was unreadable in the photo. There were other pictures of her, and they were different from the freeform family pictures. These were official. As well, there were other things mixed in the photos, such as newspaper clippings and a typed-up letter of recommendation. “When I was in Felici,” she said. “I worked for the government. This woman is Talia Ivanov, a detective on the Felici police force. We worked together somewhat often on joint operations; she was good at her job, the best, even, and a sort of friendship grew out of our mutual respect. Drinks like a drain, but she’s a really caring person, and probably the only officer on the force who anyone could call incorruptible.” She wondered what she was doing now. Was she on the case to bring her in? What did she do with the information she gave to her and Nils? Hopefully they’re causing trouble for the guild over there, she thought. But she showed Lelianna the pictures with stories once more, and the news clippings of Detective Ivanov bringing in some big case, and what seemed to be a recommendation later for her to get some sort of promotion or accolade, signed by SFO Caroline Enthaupten. She narrowed her eye at her own signature. That name was awful, but gone, now. Her face relaxed after a moment. If Lelianna had any questions throughout, Caroline would of course answer them, unless it was… uncomfortable for her.

► Lelianna nodded along before before looking back to the new pictures presented to her. Funnily enough Lelianna recognized the Surajan features of the man in these pictures. She'd lived there for all her life prior to Arecia after all. The woman in the wheelchair was a mystery though. Apparently Caroline had a sister! That was definitely a new thing Lelianna learned. So she looked harder at the picture and then back to Caroline. There...wasn't that much resemblance actually. Huh. Curious. Though she supposed that sort of thing could happen. "She seems nice. Though I'm kind of disappointed she doesn't have your hair too. It's really pretty."
Hey it was! Even with her stunted social life, she'd never before seen anyone with purple hair like that. It made Lelianna really want to try weaving some flowers through it into a wreath. Purple would look good in it. Maybe some blues? Definitely purple and white; that was a must. It simply seemed to be fitting.
Eventually Lelianna realized she was staring. With a blush she'd turn her attention back to the pictures and whatever story Caroline would tell her about each. At some point they came to a picture where it was the cyborg amongst a bunch of other people. Even Lelianna could recognize an officer's uniform. So Caroline was an officer before this? That would explain a lot of things honestly. She listened with a great deal of attention to both the words her neighbor was saying as well as the different clippings in the book. Caroline Enthaupten. Was that her full name? Now that Lelianna thought about it, she'd never learned her friend's last name. Now she just felt like a bad friend.
Before she asked that though, there was something else about this whole thing that was bugging her. A sort of familiarity to the feeling in the air. "They all seem like pretty great people." The hermit said with a smile. Though when she turned towards Caroline again, she couldn't help but hesitate. Was this a personal question? Might as well try at least. "...Do you miss them a lot?" Because that was the vibe the druid was getting from her neighbor. Though she was talking freely about these people who clearly were important to her, there was this sense about her that Lelianna was very well attuned to. Namely because she felt it herself whenever she went to visit her parents and Y'enthal.

I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Caroline chuckled at that. “Thank you. I guess I have an advantage, since my hair is synthetic. I never have to dye it, and it doesn’t require much care. I know the kids said they wanted hair colored because of mine, and I’m sure Nadia will let them eventually.” Whether she wanted to or not; Farha was not going to back down from that pink hair she desired, and no force of gods would stop her. She retrieved a permanent marker from within the binder and slid the recommendation letter free. She poised the tip just in front of the “E” of her… dead name. That was when Lelianna asked her question, which drew a pause from the cyborg. She offered the faintest of nods. “They are all wonderful, and yes,” she said. In a swift motion, the name “Enthaupten” was covered up. “I do. I miss them all terribly, but I’m afraid I can’t go back to the city.” She slipped the letter back in to its plastic alongside the photos, and put the pen away. At first, she wasn’t sure whether to erase the original part of the document, but… it was a happy memory of a friend, and she didn’t want that name tainting those thoughts; it caused her more than a lifetime of trouble as it was, and she would not let it give her any more. She wouldn’t offer an explanation of her action voluntarily, but if Lelianna asked, she was not going to keep her completely in the dark. “At least I have memories, and for that I am grateful,” she continued down the earlier conversation topic. “I regret not being able to make new ones with them, but there is no sense in dwelling. What’s done is done.” Unless questioned more, she would turn the page silently (And if questioned, would reply before doing so). The subject of the next few pages was a short woman with a brown ponytail, who was in various pictures in what looked like a bakery, or a park with Nadia and the kids, or other pictures that indicated this woman was a close family friend. Caroline closed her eyes. Of all the people she missed, besides the kids, this was the person she missed the most. “That’s Kelri,” Caroline offered. “Her family was close enough to mine that there was hardly any separation between the two. She owns the best bakery in Felici, and may be one of the nicest people living there. She…” Caroline sighed, but smiled shortly after. “She was the one who supported me the most during my rough years in the city. I wager I would not be who I am today without her.” Alongside the photographs were clippings heralding “Sweet Nothings” as one of the best businesses in the city, with positive reviews here, and awards there… it was clear she was a master of her craft. It was clear, too, by Caroline’s distracted focus that she was an important friend.

► "Wait really? Wow you lucky duck." The magi said with a little pout. That was quite the opposite of her own hair, which she had to keep pretty well trimmed due to the flowers that so readily blossomed in it. Lately it had been even more of a hassle. The number of times her head had turned into a flowery field to match her garden's was through the roof lately. Plus there was the thorny bramble she'd had after her encounter with the hunter. Do you know how hard it is to get thorns out of your hair without pricking yourself every step of the way? Virtually impossible! The redhead had a number of tiny healed cuts on her fingers and hands from that particular endeavor.
However they moved on from that topic and Lelianna got to watch with a curious eye as her friend...got rid of her name? That alone was enough to warrant some intrigue. Let alone the fact Caroline said she couldn't go back to the city. Green eyes flashed up at her friend once more filled with concern. There was a story behind that. The real question was; did Lelianna have a right to ask? "Wha..." She started but the sound faltered in her throat. It felt a little personal to ask, given she'd never revealed why she was in the forest in the first place. Because this question very well might give the hermit the reasoning behind Caroline's inhabitance of the woods.
Her hesitation eliminated her chance though, or so it seemed. Caroline went on, so Lelianna shut her mouth again. Though her eyes were draw towards the newly crossed out name and her head filled with questions she was fairly certain were very personal. But wasn't this the whole point? To get to know Caroline better? To ask personal questions?
Ugh. See this was why the hermit wasn't good in social situations with other people.
So before Caroline turned the page she at least managed to blurt out: "W-Was that not your name?" It came out in such a hurried and stumbled fashion that the druid felt herself going red again. "S-Sorry I just- I- Uh..."Great now she was stammering. The redhead averted her head for a while so she could regain her composure. Though if Caroline did speak it would draw her attention back (albeit just a hint sheepishly).
Either way they moved on and there was yet another stranger to greet. This was a friend of Caroline's, and just based on how the woman looked and spoke this pictured woman was very special to her. Lelianna took some time to observe the new photos presented to her. She did look sweet, and was that a bakery? Judging from the clippings it was a good bakery too. The druid found herself smiling yet again. "Guess I'll need to thank her then if we ever meet, huh?" The redhead said, glancing over at her neighbor. If this Kelri had really contributed to how Caroline was now, then Lelianna could only be grateful. Though she doubted she'd ever go to Felici any time soon. Or...ever, honestly.

Notes Oooh good questions so far. Learn dem thangs
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS She took a piece of her own hair with her finger and thumb, and brought it forward to examine. When she did, a lazy, furry paw fell down in front of her face, before slowly rising back up to its owner. She laughed softly at that. “I suppose so,” she said to Lelianna. “Though I’d rather have real hair, I think.” She let go of her lock with a sigh. She’d rather have real everything. The disgust at her own body didn’t lessen or worsen after the chip was removed… more like it simply changed. Now it was a reminder that she would never get her humanity back, no matter how many hunters or corporations she destroyed. It was also a prison that would not let her forget all of the things she did before. She was stuck, no matter what she did from here. Her mind demanded she take a breath, and with that, she continued on. It didn’t take long before she froze completely. She looked intently at the black line that covered the word. She thought long and hard about what to say, and how to phrase it, leaving the tent in silence save for the fierce rain outside. “It was,” she said, her voice softer than it had ever been, as if she would break if she were any louder. “A lifetime ago. It’s a dead name, now. Please forget you saw it. I’ve taken a different name; Vorlan, after…” She closed her eye tight and grimaced, her fingers tensing on the edges of the binder. It passed in a moment, but during that moment the scene played out in full- Tori’s face, eyes full of fear as the life was choked from her. Her voice, pleading for the other magi to get up and get away before Caroline killed them both. The last defiant act of the dagger entering her skull and changing her life forever. Caroline inhaled deeply, and the slightest hint of moisture tickled her eyelids. She opened them before any tears could fall. “After a very important young woman,” she finished. She got the sense that this made more questions than it answered, but the subject was making her uneasy. “Ah, shall we continue?” Fortunately Kelri was the next subject, which immediately lightened the mood, albeit in a bittersweet way. Lelianna’s little comment made Caroline feel… bashful, almost. It certainly brought a smile to her which, again, was bittersweet. “You would both get along very well,” she said. If only they could meet… alas, it seemed like an impossibility currently. Perhaps one day, though. “She is sweet, and kind, and caring, just like you. Not to mention you both have seemingly endless amounts of energy.” The next page had only a single picture; her, and a well-dressed, smirking man, taken in some bar with low lighting. Her mouth twisted, unsure which way to turn. He was a tricky subject; certainly, he was her best friend, but now… how did he feel? And he was still a hunter… and the things he did… and yet, he was the only friend she had for a long time. She spent many hours thinking about their last interaction, his eyes narrowing at her introduction, where she used “Caroline” for herself for the first time since … well, since ever. “Oliver,” she said, to answer the unasked question of who that was. “Old friend and work partner. Wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to have my back with my old job.” Other than that, she didn’t have much to volunteer about him. She was still going through the motions herself, trying to figure out what would happen if and when they met again. It was not a pleasant thought.

► Awww Stewart. The hermit had nearly forgotten about the little guy once they'd gotten started on their trip down Memory Ln. Though he was once again put into the background as Caroline reacted...in a rather concerning matter. For a while nothing happened. There was simply silence between the two and Lelianna was becoming more and more sure that she had utterly messed up in questioning the other woman. Shoot, why had she asked that? The redhead was just opening her mouth to apologize for it when Caroline spoke up. That certainly was an effective way to shut her up.
Again there seemed to be some pain or...something negative about remembering this. Now Lelianna knew a question on this subject was going to be way to personal. Even for a socially inept nerd like her. Even so she felt her heart go out to her friend as she shut her eye tightly. It hurt her to see her friend look so...well hurt. Hesitantly Lelianna reached out- she wasn't really sure if this was a good thing to do, or the right time, or whatever- to place what she hoped was a comforting hand on Caroline's shoulder. Though she didn't say anything, she gave the other woman a small smile and light squeeze. There wasn't really much she could think to say.
On to the next subject. This one fortunately lighter. It managed to bring a smile to the cyborg's face, which was a good thing. Though Caroline wasn't the only one to turn bashful. "Oh, ah, tha- Hey!" Instantly her tone shifted from embarrassment to playful protest. Lelianna puffed up again. "I'll have you know that having a lot of energy is a good thing! And it's not endless! I'm thinking you're the one with the endless amount of energy, missy!" The hand that had been on Caroline's shoulder as an attempt at comfort now slipped down to poke the woman in the side. "You completely wore me and cubs out that one time, and I thought they had endless amounts of energy!"
All joking and poking aside, the hermit calmed down and joined Caroline in looking again. This time it was another man, yet only a single picture. okay now that was a little different. All the other pages had multiple so far. Not only that but Caroline's expression was a little weird too. Apparently this was Caroline's partner and friend. Though the way the purplette talked about her seemed nice, there was something else there. At least, so the druid thought. Maybe she was imagining things.
"Huh..." Came her ever smart response. Fortunately she had a new question to come with it. "So you two worked in...Felici? What's the city like? I've never actually seen it before. Or heard too much about it considering...well...hermitude and all that." The redhead said with a little shrug of her shoulders. Really, she hadn't heard too much on the city before. Usually because, from what she'd gathered, magi weren't exactly loved there. And most of the people she did interact with were magi. So...yeah.

Notes Next post things will start getting real. Or should I say... feel.
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS Her head lifted at the hand on her shoulder, and she looked over to Lelianna. It felt… comforting. It was such a small gesture, and yet it resonated within Caroline. She gave her a slight nod and the faintest of smiles to let her know it was appreciated. Part of her just wanted to lean against her, but she got a hold of herself and continued on. She hummed a little laugh at her poke and protest. “Hey now, hey now, I didn’t say it was a bad thing. You’re right, though. I guess that’s another perk of this… cybernetic body. I don’t really ever get physically exhausted. The cubs have met their match.” At her next question, she tilted her head up and thought about it. Truthfully, she didn’t know much about it, other than where she worked and a few other locations, like Kelri’s place, and the park. What did she, Caroline, actually think about the city? She’d never really given it a second thought. “It’s not as nice as many make it out to be,” she began. She flipped back through pictures they already saw, ones that could paint a clearer picture of Felici. “The central park is lovely, though your garden makes it seem like a weed patch. Kelri’s bakery is there. There’s a lot to do if you enjoy art and shopping, but… well, it’s not a good place for magi. Only the brave, desperate, or stupid try to stay there; for one, the hunter’s guild is stationed there. And besides that, the Runic University is there, too, and they don’t care for magi or cyborgs.” She pointed to pictures as she went, showing the looming runic building, or a picture of the park, or the outside of Sweet Nothings. “On the surface, it’s beautiful. But I know that’s just an act; it’s a bad place for anyone who isn’t a well-off human. Trust me. Haven is much nicer, from what I saw.” Next, there was a dark, large envelope in the middle of the binder, laced in the rings as if it were a page. The envelope was sealed, and Caroline turned past it quickly, like it would bite her if she didn’t get rid of it. “Bad memories,” she offered. “I keep them in case I ever need a reminder. I hope I will never have to look at them.” It would have to do. She wasn’t going to explain any further. Beyond the mystery envelope were a few more pictures here and there of people she’d already seen. There were more pictures of herself as she went on, taken by other people. She looked neutral in most pictures, though “serious” would be another good word. It wasn’t as if she was grumpy or irritated, but rather without emotion at all. The only time she appeared to express anything was around the friends and family she introduced already. She wore the same outfit in almost all of them. Same haircut. Same expression. No pictures without her eyepatch on. There were few news clippings of herself that she chose to save (since many were shoved in the Bad Memories Envelope), but there were a few where she did “good;” a story about her lifting a truck off a police officer stuck underneath, or busting a big case with Talia, or pulling some allies from a recently bombed-out building… they were few, but sometimes it helped to remember that she wasn’t 100% awful back a few years… even if none of these stories redeemed her actions. They were a spark of hope for her future, and nothing more.

► Okay. Good. She'd done good. That was the right thing to do. She had, in fact, succeeded in trying to be comforting. Thank gods for that. Caroline even laughed a little bit later. That was a lot better. "Hey if you can match the cubs in energy, then I just might put you on babysitting duty from now on." Warned the redhead. Though she was only teasing. Still, it might make the other denizens of the woods more...tolerable towards the cyborg. With Lelianna reassuring them they'd be good, but if Caroline encountered any of them alone that could be a different story.
Onwards they went down Memory Ln. Lelianna was legitimately curious about how Felici was. Apparently not so great though. For magi understandably. But hey the hermit got to learn it had a bakery. And a garden! Well okay not a garden but a park. Close enough? Not Lelianna's garden but...close enough to something. overall it didn't sound too wonderful. Not that Lelianna was really expecting that, but she was just curious to hear more about it. Slowly she nodded. At least she got this much information on it. That and the fact Caroline didn't really seem to think of the place highly.
Lelianna didn't ask any questions though. Because what she'd really like to ask questions about was the black envelope Caroline whooshed past. A short explanation was given at best. One that immediately shut Lelianna's mouth. No asking about that one. Bad memories. They'd broach none of that if the hermit could help it. So no, Lelianna didn't ask anything of it. She just gave Caroline a little nod of understanding before they changed subjects.
Though from the hermit's perspective it wasn't much better. Caroline looked so serious in these pictures. So...sad. No, not even sad. There was just some kind of hollowness or something to the woman in the pictures that felt so horribly wrong to the druid. A person used to being surrounded with the living energy and presence of nature around her. Not only that, but she was used to the Caroline there with here now.
Not...this.
Without even thinking she reached out to gently touch one of the pictures with the purplette in it, as if she were registering it was real. The clipping were interesting but no surprise to the hermit. Caroline was a good person; of course she'd do nice things. But these pictures just...A look came over Lelianna's face. One that was a mix of emotions, the foremost being kind of sad. She sat there in silence for a bit before speaking up. "I-I'm glad you seem...happier now." The hermit said in a surprisingly gentle voice. Green eyes flicked over towards Caroline before looking back at the picture. The hand was removed. "You...Don't really look so happy in these pictures." Lelianna wasn't too sure what the cyborg looked like in these photos. Whatever it was, it simply wasn't good though. She turned her head back to Caroline. "Are you...feeling happier? I-I know that people can look a certain way while...while feeling another."

Notes *Spins wheel of feels* aaaand our category is... dead parents!
I AM NOT MERCIFUL I AM NOT KIND I AM NOT AFRAID TO MAKE YOU WISH THAT I WAS She laughed a little. Yeah, as if Lelianna would give up playing with her animal pals for even a moment. Plus with the way mama bear looked ready to tear her head off, she doubted she’d be left alone with cubs anytime soon (Though Taavi always seemed to find her way to her, despite her growling mother). “Perhaps it’s not entirely fair,” she added to her rant on Felici. “But a mix of bad memories and seeing the worst side of it has a way of tainting your perception. It is beautiful, in its own way, and not everyone there is a bad sort, but I still believe Haven is better, both in community and aesthetics.” You could build all the architectural marvels you wanted, but it was hard to top an entire city that managed to look as if it belonged in the wild, rather than displacing it. She watched Lelianna’s hand intently. Her words made her take a closer look at her old self, her expression, what was going through her mind at the time. The migraines, the visions, the constant mental fight… all mixed with cold calculation; there was no time to live when there was work to do. A world to improve. People to keep safe. Mission to mission, training to paperwork, she hardly had time to live. And back then? She didn’t know what she was missing out on. She looked to Lelianna, and saw the almost pained look on her face. Was it really that noticeable? She gave her a firm nod and a reassuring smile. “Much happier. That version of me,” she said, and looked back to the pictures. “That was a lifetime ago. I am not sure I was even capable of being happy back then. It… is a complicated situation, but I could not be happier with where I am.” She looked up at Stewart, who adjusted his sleeping position slightly, and then to Lelianna. “Or… who am I with. Without you, I may have still been that unfeeling… thing. Every day, I am more grateful that I met you when I did.” Truer words were never spoken. She turned her attention back to the binder and flipped through some blank laminated page. She stopped when she reached a white envelope, similar to the one they passed earlier. She froze up when she saw it. This… this was it. Her brain did a hell of a job simulating her heart dropping into her stomach. She put her hand on the envelope, which was completely sealed, and took a few breaths. “This… this is the favor I mentioned.” She closed her eye, and her words were unusually tepid. “I… have not looked inside this envelope. Ever. But I know what it contains. My… my mother was perhaps the most important person in my life, but she died when I was young. I can remember some things. A word. Spending time with her outside. But her face… I can’t see her face, no matter how hard I try to remember. I know so little about her, like it’s all just out of reach. These pictures… these are of her.” She opened her eye and shuddered a little, the shaky little motion someone goes through before they take a dangerous plunge. “Lelianna. This is going to be very heavy for me. I would just like you to be here for me, now, when I open this. I… I fear I can’t do it by myself. It will be too much.” Even now, it was very difficult to even consider opening it. Blindly, she reached for Lelianna’s hand until she found it and gave it a squeeze. “Will… will you do this for me, Leli?”
