spirit sighting
"My blades hunger." ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 543 words | The moon was high and full tonight, painting the world below the cloudless sky in a pale silver light. The dense vegetation of that spanned the length of breadth of Mungu Island stretched into the distance in every direction, the thick canopy of green casting strange shadows upon the jungle floor. An eerie quiet dominated the jungle for miles around. No birds. No insects. Not even the shallow breath of the wind to break the unnatural silence for fear of angering the terror that gripped the isle.
A soft sound broke the spell cast on the area. Soft rustling disturbed a few low hanging leaves and heavy thuds echoed through the trees, heralding the approaching silhouette of a large, muscular being. A set of four yellow lights gleamed in the shadows. The being’s silhouette became increasingly clear with each of its heavy footfalls until a single clawed foot tore free of the shadows. A second foot followed the first and brought with it the lower half of a leg. Several soft thuds continued the sound as the being advanced on the mortals that had dared to stand before him and defile his domain. He stepped fully into the light and stood before the trespassers so that they might view him in his full majesty.
He was tall, far taller than any mortal could ever hope to be naturally. A barreled chest rumbled with a low growl and arms as thick as a man’s thighs tensed and relaxed as he rolled his shoulders. Blackened, gnarled flesh like the bark of a great oak covered the being in a natural armor. A skirt of moss hung from the being’s waist and covered his legs and a coating the same grew from his shoulders. The luminescent orbs were set within the hollows of a great mask of bone in the shape of a goat’s head with crooked horns sprouting from either side. A long prehensile tail swished languidly from the base of his spine. Clutched in the great spirit's clawed hands were a pair of massive, hooked obsidian cleavers. Truly, there was nothing about the great spirit that was the least bit friendly or inviting. It was not his purpose to coddle the lesser beings by forging his appearance to invite conversation, but rather to remind them of their proper place, to show them that they were not the masters of this world as the would have themselves believe. They had done as they pleased with this world for far too long already, and now was the time to correct their mistakes.
His one of his cleavers rose in a single fluid motion with his arms cracking like the snapping of trees. He pointed the tip at the mortals before him and spoke to them in the Olden Tongue. “Mortals. Your presence is a plague upon this world, and its end will begin here upon this island you have desecrated in the name of your greed.” The great spirit spun the weapon into a flourish and brought his other cleaver into a ready position while spreading his feet spread and shifting his weight to the balls of his feet. The time for words had passed. Now was a time for the dealing of punishment to be met.

Blades Beneath the TreesLocation: Mungu Island Time: Night Yuki's Phone: Satellite We find our Hero today on a boat headed for Mungu island, Source of the strange spirit sightings lately. The King of Suraja had put out an open invitation to get rid of the spirits that had begun rampaging on the island. The reward was considerably high, and Yuki was sure that he was at a high enough power level that he could do some good. His mind wandered to the last catastrophe he was a part of. The Camlorn Incident, some called it, was the first time Yuki got a taste for true combat. Not the sparing and training he had done his entire life, but true life or death battles. Facing down the zombie horde with nothing but a sword at your back, it was an intense surge of fear and adrenaline; a feeling he needed to feel again. He had left before they could tell him no. Yuki Packed his backpack with a few supplies: couple of protein bars, canister of water, Matches, extra shirt, flask of tequila, you know, the essentials. Naturally he had his weapons with him, ready for anything. On each of his legs were strapped 5 throwing knives, with another 10 in his bag. A Sword hung on his left side, the same one that he bought in Camlorn that Day of the Incident. But this time, he brought something new, a Spear. this one was actually a modern technological piece of genius. The spear ‘s shaft broke apart into 5 foot-long pieces with the ends attached to magnets. When the pieces were combined with the spear head, an electrical circuit was completed, binding them all together by strong electromagnets. A simple button in the center of the shaft could break the circuit if held down for eight seconds. Otherwise, this six foot metal spear wasn’t breaking that easily. The spear head was sheathed and attached to his belt below his backpack, with the 5 pieces strapped to the back pack. In all, Yuki felt prepared for the storm he was sailing into. Too bad he didn’t tell his parents where he was really going for the weekend. Otherwise they would have told him a very important tidbit of information…. Human weapons have no effect on spirits.
Arriving on the island with all the rest of the hopeful spirit slayers/talkers/lovers Yuki made his way towards the forest. Spirits and forests go hand and hand right? he thought, grabbing a local map at the port just in case. He looked at the map with much difficulty. Was it in another language? He couldn’t make out the letters or any of the map markers. He stood there tilting his head at the curiosity until he was interrupted by a soft cooing voice. "Excuse me, dear,” she said, “are you trying to read that map? I think it might be upside down."Yuki turned bright red as he lowered the map so his eyes were over the edge of the paper. He just stared at the Feathered lady as he turned the map over. How Embarrassing. “Um… Thank you…” He paused for a moment as the embarrassment began to subside, only being replaced by a chuckle soon after. “Haha, I’m always doing that, Thanks. I’m Yukimaru” he said, Stashing the map under his left armpit and extending his hand “Are you here because of the spirit stuff too? Would be handy to have an Air Magi Around. I’ve seen the stuff my mom can do when she gets angry, I bet we can definitely get to the bottom of this if we work together.” Luckily she agreed, giving her name as Nasrin. Though Yuki almost immediately began calling her Nazzy, As they traveled the forest they didn’t seem to encounter much, so they spent a majority of the time talking. Yuki asked a bunch of questions about magic and how it worked and the sort of things. He explained how his mother had her wings cut off during the camps, and didn’t like talking about magic or using it much. As he spoke, it didn’t seem like he fully understood everything that was going on with magi. He didn’t “get” why people disliked magi, or why magi were so scared. In fact it seemed like he was envious of their abilities. As the day went on and began fading into night they agreed that it was best to head back to town, get a regular bed and non-proteinbar food. But night fell faster than they were used to due to their new latitude. They thought they were lucky from the full moon at least giving them the ability to see. But what they did see, was something no one would wish to find in the forest. Yuki stared blankly at the creature they stumbled upon it was like something directly out of a dark and very difficult RPG. The skull-like head, the massive black stone cleavers and the glowing eyes. This… This. Was not what he signed up for. Hell hounds? Cool. Centaurs? Easy. BUT THIS?! This was not what he was expecting. In his bones, Yuki felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time. Fear. Joor, Hiin qalos los ann Krasnovaar nau daar Lein, Ahrk nii oblaan fen kiin het nau daar ii hi lost gaal ko fin abur do hin Eritheia.
Yukimaru stared blankly at the giant creature in front of him. “Look mate, I don’t speak… Umm…” His mouth was dry as he searched his brain for what possible language that sounded like. “I don’t even know what language that is.” He finally admitted after a second. “Spirit? Yeah, I don’t speak spirit. But It’s Cool. I’m cool, We’re cool. I come in Peace. No need to, like, Hulk out.” He spoke with his hand, gesturing to show that they weren’t hostile. While at the same time, his other hand rested on the hilt of his sword, ready to draw. He leaned his head towards his companion and whispered. “Okay. So, This… Might be more than we can handle…” Words that Yuki never thought he’d say in his life. “Get ready to move.“Listen up! My words are #87cefa! My thoughts are Italic. ❝ | in the latest midnight hours when the world has gone to sleep, you've gotta get up. when doubts begin to rise and the world is at your feet, you've gotta get up. reach, it's not as bad as it seems. i cleanse in the river for somebody else, for anyone but myself. i'm not a selfless man, i'm not a man of wealth. | ❞ |
It only took one look at Nasrin to tell that she was very, very excited to be paying a visit to Suraja. Yes, Suraja! Her homeland! The country she had not stepped foot in for so many years (far too many in her opinion) and now found herself privileged with the ability to help with quite the pressing issue— angry spirits.
Now, she would have liked to have visited for a happier, more laid back occasion, but this hardly put a damper on Nasrin’s enthusiasm at simply being back. There was a nostalgia that sung in her very bones as the country’s coastline came into view over the cresting waves and she’d been up on the transport ship’s deck, hips flush against the guardrail, for most of the trip. One would think she was an excitable child being taken on vacation rather than a fully grown magi woman about to take on a dangerous task. It wasn’t that she was naïve to this danger— no —Nasrin had been meticulous in getting all the details on what she would be facing upon arrival (though they were vague reports at best) and she knew what spirits were capable of.
The fair haired magi’s true home was a small fishing town practically across the country from Mungu Island, but they’d lived right up against the Kujiua Jungle, after all. Many a bedtime story and cautionary tale had featured the spirits that lived among the trees. Playful faeries with sparkling wings who would leave little braids in your hair and dark terrors with many eyes that stole children and sharpened their claws on the bones. Oh yes, Nasrin knew that there was truly no way to be sure of what the wilds would throw at them, that it would likely be terrifying, but she’d always been the soft hearted sort. She couldn’t ignore a cry for help when it came from her homeland.
The port they came to dock in was buzzing with activity— more boats leaving than arriving —and Nasrin stepped from the boat with a jittery sort of energy prickling at her skin. It wasn’t so clear where those who accepted the request should be head, so the air magi decided to keep an eye out for anyone who looked to be here for the same reason. Like… him. The young man with all of the weapons strapped to his body and the map in his hands; the upside down map?
Nasrin drew up a bit nearer to him to make sure that that was, in fact, the case and muffled a soft chuckle. ❝Excuse me, dear, are you trying to read that map? I think it might be upside down.❞
The very visible flush that rushed into his cheeks had her loosing that chuckle outright before the air magi flashed him a kind smile, pleased to know that she had come across someone friendly. Nasrin accepted the handshake, fitting her avian fingers into the gesture as best as they would allow, and her pale eyebrows shot up at the mention of Yukimaru’s mother being an air magi. How nice! It was always refreshing to meet a human who was so casual about being around her kind, at least he seemed to be human.
With an agreement to work together in the spirit hunt, they set off away from the populated area of the island and into the woods. Spooky or not, this would be the best chance they had of actually running into what they were looking for and, thankfully, she had company and conversation to serve as a bit of a distraction. Nasrin was delighted to hear more about Yuki’s family (even though it became apparent that his mother had suffered horribly in the camps) and was likewise happy to indulge any questions he had. She had made her peace with those memories enough to share and she found Yuki’s curiosity and tolerance endearing. He made very nice company.
Unfortunately, the peace of meandering through the forest was not to last.
She hadn’t mentioned it, but Nasrin had noticed the eerie silence that seemed to grow heavier and more oppressive with each passing minute. A forest without the chirping of birds and insects was profoundly wrong, like the earth itself was holding its breath, and the cause for this terrifying quiet soon stepped into the moonlight. She saw the glow of its eyes first and then the rest. Claws and horns and giant cleavers that the spirit swung about effortlessly, then a low, gravelly voice speaking words that neither of the mortals could make sense of. Was that Olden Tongue? The fair haired magi vaguely knew that spirits often spoke in it, but she didn’t know a word of it herself.
That wasn’t really what was important here. ❝I had hoped we might be able to at least speak to it,❞ Nasrin replied with a frown and raised her talon’d hands, the night air beginning to stir and whisper at their ankles to betray her unease. ❝I should be able to get us both away from here if we need, though. And hopefully keep it back.❞
She was tempted to try and say something to this spirit— appeal to it somehow? —but any words Nasrin could think of remained stuck on her tongue. For the moment, she just stood her ground nearby Yukimaru and watched the spirit closely with her magic at the ready.

spirit sighting
"My blades hunger." ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 376 words | The great spirit’s horned mask tilted almost imperceptibly to the left. So, the mortals wouldn’t be the first to strike? How typical of the cowardice plaguing their ilk. It was nothing he hadn’t come to expect but it certainly didn’t insult him. If anything, it would make his task so much easier.
He felt an unnatural gust of wind emanating from the woman among the pair. An air magi? A stare was leveled at the woman; of course, one of the Traitor’s favorites would come to this place and attempt to stop him from completing his task. Twin jets of what could’ve been steam or sawdust were expelled in a gust from his nostrils as he sprung into motion. Despite his massive size, and that of his chosen weapons, he moved with the speed of far smaller being. The spirit’s limbs cracked and splittered like an ancient oak shifting its weight under the strain of storm blow winds as it closed the distance.
One of the mighty stone cleavers lashed out, aiming to claim the woman’s head while the other would flash downward with the goal of splitting the witless snowy-haired boy in half. He would follow them if either managed to avoid his strikes. The trees would groan as they shifted to accommodate his attacks. They had come to appreciate his efforts to protect them from mortal axes seeking to fell them for their wood, and had promised a certain level of aid. He would use that to his advantage.
The surrounding plant life began to shift once again as the spirit drew upon the vitality of the forest. The grass browned and elephantine leaves feel like a rain of rust. A smell of earthy decay suffused the air as trees that had been vibrate with life only moments ago began to wither away. The spirit thanked the noble beings for their sacrifice and gave his word that the havoc wreaked upon this night would be repaid in full with new growths. His eyes alighted on the mortals that had dare defile his domain with their presence. He would water the ground with their blood and use their bodies to fuel new growth.
A noble sacrifice.
“Stand and fight, mortals. Face your doom with honor.”

Blades Beneath the TreesLocation: Mungu Island Time: Night Yuki's Phone: Satellite The Spirit huffed and puffed and blew Yuki's confidence way the fuck down. “Yeah, I don't thing talking's gonna do anything.”
The second the giant demon began to move Yuki was already prepared to move. “DODGE!!!!” He yelled, quickly attempting to push Nazzy one way before Pouncing to the other side and rolling away. He turned and to his surprise, the demon was already where he once stood, his blade Just missing its mark. Holy fuck that thing’s fast he thought as his hand reached to his right knife holster and gripped the first one he could grab. In one fluid motion he pulled it from the holster and flung it blade first at the spirit, his main goal was to draw his attention away from Nazzy.
Yuki didn’t wait to see what would happen to the knife. He immediately turned behind a tree and unsheathed his sword. “Nazzy! We need to regroup!” He called out, but his attention was pulled away from the tree he was behind actually moving. The demon came out him again, and now there was no longer a tree in between the two of them. Yuki put all of his effort into avoiding the demon’s attacks, Hopefully while Yuki was keeping his attention Nazzy was using the opportunity to attack. The second the creature turned his attention away from Yuki, he would immediately throw another dagger at his face, once again, just to pull his agro.
However, the demon stopped, and Yuki’s dread about facing this spirit just peaked from what he saw. The forest began to decay, the colors of green quickly being replaced by brown and gray. Fuck… Time to make a tactical gtfo. He then spoke loud enough for his companion to hear him, whether she found her way back to him, or if they were still separated he would more shout the idea. “Nazzy! Put some fog down and let’s head back to the clearing we just passed! Gotta get this guy away from the trees!” With all the games yuki has played over the years, he assumed that the spirit was somehow gaining energy from the forest around him. That made sense for a spirit right? Besides, it was probably best to have more mobility. The moving trees made it rather difficult to work with.
Yuki waited for the fog to appear before moving. That is, unless the demon began to attack Nazzy to stop her. Should that be the case, Yuki would shout and throw as many Daggers it took to pull the spirit’s agro. But there! There was the fog. So Yukimaru started to run. As he did he heard the Demon call out, “Amad ahrk krif, Joor. Luft hin daan voth Zin.”, creepy, yes. But Yuki still had no idea what it meant.
“I TOLD YOU WE DON’T SPEAK ABYSSAL!” Yuki shouted in response as he high-tailed it out of the area.
When Yuki finally reached the clearing he allowed himself to rest and catch his breath until his companion got there. “Okay, THAT” he said, his face exasperated as he placed one hand on his knee and pointed in the direction they both came from. “Was not what I was expecting.” He continued to pant as he reached for his water canteen, offering it to Nazzy before partaking himself. “We can’t let that… thing. Get the people in town. We have to beat it here.” Was he scared? Oh hell yes. But his honor and moral compass would not allow him to run away. Well, at least, run away without the desire to go back. “Let’s make a battle plan.”

Yeah, she was getting the sense that Yukimaru was right on that point. Which Nasrin found upsetting. She’d always been the chatty sort— a firm believer that words could replace almost any form of conflict —but even with her ability to charm the most jaded of people out of their shell the air magi was at a bit of a loss with this situation. How could she possibly calm a spirit this vengeful and determined to stamp out anything that got in its way? She didn’t even know if it (he?) could understand a language besides the Olden Tongue, much less whether he would listen before trying to cut her in half. Nasrin was very much out of her element with this one.
Now wasn’t the time to get wrapped up in thinking about a way to open up diplomacy, though. The spirit’s gaze upon her (all four, malevolently luminous eyes) was like a physical weight and Nasrin felt every feather on her body bristle in response. That was all the warning either of the mortals got before the spirit was moving, far faster than expected, in a full out charge and Nasrin’s breath caught in her throat before she reached for her magic in preparation to defend.
She heard Yuki yell out to her, felt the push to her shoulder, and then her arms snapped out— wind howled to life in response. The powerful gust radiated out from its caster in a single wave that shoved both Nasrin and Yuki away from the reach of the spirits blades and she narrowly twisted to land on her feet among the bumpy roots that littered the earth. Their attacker was not only fleet footed but had quite the deadly reach with those weapons, and were the trees moving to let him pass? Oh Gods, just what they needed. It was concerning enough to see that the spirit now had a new advantage over the mortals, yet there was also the implication that nature itself favored the spirit over them. It wanted them to lose to its protector.
❝Nazzy! Put some fog down—❞
Nasrin’s focus was snapped back to where Yukimaru stood on the opposite side of the spirit and the air magi’s head jerked in a short nod before she was again reaching for her magic. The wind still swirled at her ankles, tugging at her sleeves and hair like an anxious child, but this time she was focused on summoning mist from her lungs which began to pour out at a quick rate. It was risky to rush this— she could leave herself winded and dizzy by pushing too hard —however pacing herself really wasn’t Nasrin’s concern right now. She had to get up their cover if they had any real hope of falling back to strategize.
Helped along by eddies of wind magic the fog flooded out between the trees and Nasrin, lungs aching, urged herself into a run after where she could hear Yuki’s retreating footsteps. The haze wasn’t as thick or widespread as she would’ve liked but, well, hopefully it would be enough for now.
❝I knew it would be dangerous but,❞ Ugh, she needed to breathe for a few seconds. The response trailed off as the older magi trudged to a stop in the clearing and gratefully accepted the water. ❝You’re right, the only reason the town is still standing is because the spirit hasn’t gotten to “cleansing” that area yet. It will be horrific if that happens.❞
Sharp pangs of worry bloomed in Nasrin’s chest as she imagined this— the death, the ruin that awaited the town —before the feeling was buoyed by a rush of determination to prevent it. Now, the question was how. ❝My magic probably won’t be able to damage him. It’d be best suited to helping us both be more agile; I have enough control to do things like lift or push you… as you must have felt. ❞ A soft puff of laughter escaped her, though it wasn’t very jovial and faded back into a look of deep thought. ❝I was also hoping that the trees would make it harder for the spirit to swing his weapons, but they seem to be on his side. We shouldn’t go back in there.❞

spirit sighting
"My blades hunger." ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 536 words | The spirit snorted sawdust again as he found himself unable to land the decisive blow he knew himself capable of. Despite his cluelessness, the white-haired mortal seemed to have the right combination of skill, agility, devilish luck to avoid being caught by the edge of his cleavers; it was on the verge of being considered impressive.
The woman though…
She possessed no weapons as far as his eyes could discern and likely relied on the magic gifted to her by the Betrayer. Such things were unworthy of her. What the goddess had been thinking all those years ago when she bridged the gap between mortal and spirit was a mystery to him. How could she abandon her true children in favor of this abomination and those of her ilk? The world would be better for it if they were to all simply vanish from its face.
He was about to turn and inch the process along when he heard a heavy thunk that made him pause. An alien presence made in his arm itself known to him. When he craned his neck to view the cause, he discovered that a knife had embedded itself in the oaken armor protecting his left triceps. His head swiveled slowly and deliberately towards the one possible source of the insult. The air all but shook as a growl rumbled deep within his chest. This fool appeared to wish for a painful death; he would gladly oblige it. He scarcely acknowledged the words the mortal babbled to the other as he sought to bisect him like a butcher carving meat. Only when he felt his body beginning to slow did he cease in his assault long enough to feed upon the life force surrounding him.
It was around that time that the fog came rolling in, drawing his eyes once again to the woman and her magic. The mist flowing like a stream from her most was causing a rapid drop in visibility. He made to stop here only to be annoyed by same thump of knives colliding with his armor. The white-hair mortal was beginning to become irksome.
Eventually the fog was thick enough that he lost sight of his prey, and even the sound of their retreat was muffled by it. He roared a wordless curse after them for their cowardice and attempted to shift into the realm of spirits. The block he felt only made his cry rise in volume.
Cursed be the Dealer and His games!
He took a step after the fleeing mortals as a strange charge seemed to leave the air. Far in the distance, the lighthouse was struggling to stay alight. Though it wasn’t something that could be seen the spirit felt it clearly enough as though previously unseen chains slipped free of his frame. The ambiance of his eyes flared as his body began to fade and his pace slowed to a casual walk. The last thing to remain visible was that horned mask before that too faded from view.
Less than two hundred yards away, a two-handed battle axe caught petrified stump appeared in the middle of the clearing the pair had found themselves in, all but begging them for their attention.

Blades Beneath the TreesLocation: Mungu Island Time: Night Yuki's Phone: Cura Yukimaru took another sip of the canteen, his mind racing to figure out how to fight the monster. But he couldn’t get his mind to focus. There were too many inputs too much going on at the moment. “One sec, Let me think….” He said, pulling out his phone and a headphone. He turned on his music and let it block out the rest of the world. A few more seconds, the music became white noise, and h could concentrate on what he needed: a Battle Strategy.
He sat with his arms and legs crossed as he pulled his knowledge from every video game boss fight he’s ever played, copying and pasting those strategies until he figured on would work. Now what did he have at his back? He was fast, agile, and could strike pretty hard. But he couldn’t keep it up. Nazzy said she could create Gusts of wind, Push him to move faster, and maybe even lift him into the air. That should at least lessen the energy he would use, allowing him to fight at least a little longer. And maybe it could even slow the spirit down just enough to strike….
“Okay, I got a couple of combo attacks that could work…” Yuki started, taking the ear bud out. But as he was putting it away again, something was happening behind him. The clouds parted and a beam of moonlight revealed something in the clearing. A tree stump, with a silver battle-axe embedded into the surface, now stood in the center of the field. Yuki would only notice if Nazzy made some sort of indication that it existed, otherwise you can skip down to the battle strategy section. “W…Was that there before?” Yuki said, looking side to side and pointing at the stump. Any form of answer would have gotten a “Yea. Didn’t think so…”
Yuki got up and inspected the weapon, the design was exquisite, and the very air around it seemed to vibrate. “Okay. In all my time playing Video games,” he said as he gripped the handle. “This just screams ‘Boss fight weapon’. An axe might be a better weapon to take down a tree, Am I right?” He gave a laugh and gave the axe a pull. It was difficult at first, it didn’t seem like it wanted to budge. “Okay. Just a sec, I’ve seen this movie before, just gotta put more force right?” He pulled harder, he pulled from the other side, he pulled and pulled but nothing happened.
“Nazzy, Give me a hand.” He said, hoping either the other set of hands and/or use of magic would help remove the axe. Yuki placed his foot on the stump as he whipped his brow from the sweat he was producing. This time, Yuki put every fiber of his strength into pulling it. With or without Nazzy’s help, the axe would finally begin to budge, finally coming loose causing Yuki to fall backward into the grass with the axe in hand.
“Okay, now that we have the Axe of the Shining Moon. Let’s talk strategy.” Yes, he did just name the axe that. A video game axe needed a video game name. “So idea one, we’ll call the “Ankle Biter”.” Clearly, Yuki liked calling things by special code names. “You’ll use your air magic to make me move faster, push air to my back, and bend the air resistance away from me. Now I’ll be keeping low, attacking his legs to hopefully slow his movement. Aiming for that… that... Thing at the ankle. Supposed to be really bad if cut.” He meant the Achilles tendon. Yuki wasn’t all that great in most subjects at school, but if there was one thing he could be considered “smart” it would be his battling strategies. Kid could come up with the most creative combinations for attacks to truly devastate an opponent. The one thing he lacked though, was battle practice.
“After that we have the finishing move,” He continued. “You use your wind to kep the guy still, if he’s on the ground, pushing him down, if he’s upright, spinning it around him to keep him from moving. Then, you lift me up above him and send me flying down like a Guillotine.”
“With those two moves, that should be all we need. Can I count on you?” Yuki was basically telling this person he just met, to back him up and keep him alive. He could not do this without her help. And he could tell from his own exhaustion level that he needed to finish this as quickly as possible. Naturally, he was willing to listen to any battle strategies Nazzy had, if he liked the idea he was sure to attach a cool codename to it.
After they were done talking strategy, it was time to summon the beast for round 2.

Let him think? The sight of headphones being pulled into sight seemed to surprise Nasrin some and invisible question marks practically floated about her head in a dubious swarm until she wrapped her head around what Yukimaru was doing. Ah, focusing. She supposed that music would be a good means to that end, though she simply hadn’t expected him to so readily switch gears like that.
The air magi was left to stand idly as her partner in this spirit hunt thought over a strategy and her pale blue eyes kept casting fretfully back towards the tree line as time dragged on. There was no telling just how long they had until the spirit realized where the two had gone and followed, bringing the fight to the clearing, and it was that uncertainty that put Nasrin on edge. Their opponent was fast on his feet, thickly armored, and equipped with equally deadly weapons and an intent to kill. All in all, they were in a rather dangerous situation that would take some clever strategy to overcome, so the air magi hoped that some promising ideas could be tossed around before they were throw back into the fray. Despite having lived more than a century already Nasrin wasn’t eager to die.
It was Yuki’s voice that jerked her attention back towards the human and, as she processed his words, Nasrin simultaneously noticed the new feature in the clearing. A gleam of metal shimmered to life in the moonlight in the form of an imposing looking battle axe stuck in a nearby tree stump; both of which had definitely not been there a few minutes ago. Or, maybe they had and the two mortals simply hadn’t been able to perceive it. The fair haired magi was tempted to question the how and why of all this, but after all that had happened so far Nasrin decided to push the inquiries aside and extended one avian hand to gesture towards the strange weapon.
❝Look—❞ Came her incredulous sounding voice just as Yuki directed his own gaze towards where she was pointing and, at his question, she only nodded wordlessly. Yeah the axe was definitely new.
The air magi hung back by a foot or two to allow her companion to approach the weapon first, but it soon became apparent that he wasn’t able to move it on his own. This prompted Nasrin to close the distance to the petrified looking stump that served as a pedestal and she fitted her own, talon’d fingers around the axe’s hilt to offer her strength in trying to pull it out. Did she have a lot of strength to add? Not really, yet it was either this slight addition or just having a second pair of hands that caused the blade to slip out from the wood and take Yukimaru barreling backwards on the grass with it. Nasrin managed to let go before following suit, even though she still stumbled off balance before managing to right herself.
❝Axe of the shining moon?❞ She couldn’t help but echo the newly created title with a note of amusement to her tone. ❝I suppose this is promising though, maybe some force is actually on our side now. Giving us a weapon that will help us stop that beast.❞ Equally promising were the attacks Yuki then began outlining to Nasrin, who listened with rapt attention, and the air magi did her best to visualize each of them so that she could make better sense of what would be demanded of her magic. It all seemed doable. She wouldn’t have trouble using her sway over the wind to heighten her partner’s speed or lift him airborne and it was simple enough to trap the spirit in a twister, given he didn’t have the strength to break free. Which she… really hoped he didn’t. This could really work if everything played out according to plan.
Nasrin’s gaze, awash with careful thought, had strayed down towards the grassy earth until she looked back up to meet Yuki’s eyes and offer a supportive smile. ❝Of course, dear. I will do everything in my power to keep you safe and make sure this works. And it should.❞ One of her hands curled into a loose fist as a look of fierce determination cleared away the creases of worry between the air magi’s brows. ❝Just, please, be careful. There are probably some nasty surprises still waiting for us and I don’t want to drop you on our opponent’s head until we have the proper opportunity.❞
The spirit still hadn’t reappeared. So now all that was left to do was wait for it to step into the clearing, now that they had a plan of attack. 789 WORDS ● Yukimaru DDos ● but when does anything go according to plan

spirit sighting
"My blades hunger." ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 508 words | A vision of such vividness would fill Yuki’s thoughts upon freeing the weapon. Images of a man wielding the same axe in combat against a spirit in the shape of a white serpent ran wild through his mind. The man held the axe in hands that trembled with fatigue and blood lost from countless weeping wounds. He glared death at the serpent, which appeared to be in a similar state. The two combatants lunged at one another in the same moment. Teeth met the man’s breast and an axe met the creature’s jaw.
The spirit flung the man from its mouth as it wailed in pain. The man fell in a heap of bleeding limbs and rolled until his back impacted against an old stump. He struggled to rise as the lunged again, intending to end the confrontation with the next blow. The man waited until the last moment before stepping aside and crushed through the creature’s neck and into the stump. The spirit’s body was rocked by a single spasm before dissipating into mist. There was no time for the man to celebrate his victory as his wounds seemed to finally overcome him.
He fell to his back and stared into the sky with unseeing eyes, struggling for breath. With each labored rising of his chest, his vision began to blur until there was only blackness.
Then, there was nothing.
Not being forced to tread upon the roots of the trees under his charge was liberating. Here, it the realm of spirits, the great one could all but ignore the nuisances of the physical realm. His steps need not be as careful and his bulk couldn’t interfere with his stride through the trees. He could feel the vibrancy of the life surrounding him as though it were a physical thing that he could touch. It seemed almost sad to him that the mortals had lost their ability to commune with the forces of nature and had turned to bending them to their will. He almost missed the era when mortal and spirit lived side by side in harmony. He missed many things that he knew would never return.
He would not let it stop him now.
The mortals had fallen too far to be saved now. Their greed and ambition and vainglorious pursuits had corrupted them. Even the influence of the Traitor had not been enough to dissuade them from their path. She had failed; he would not.
The great protector came upon the clearing, and what he saw waiting for him there caused his ire to rise exponentially. The axe of the foolish Forseti. Looking upon the ancient weapon was like staring into a void ripped into the world; it’s very presence was anathema to his very existence and repulsed every fiber of his being. He would destroy the vile weapon and the mortals that so clearly sought to wield it against him. He charged at the pair, his blades shifting back to the mortal plane as they sought the mortals’ necks.
“Time to die, mortals.”

Blades Beneath the TreesLocation: Mungu Island Time: Night Yuki's Phone: What I'm Made of Yuki honestly didn’t want to mention the weird vision he had. Surely it wasn’t important, nor was it real. Just some sort of in-game cutscene or something… no matter, he had the axe and he was sure he knew how to wield it.
As they discussed strategy, Yuki was sure he… felt something, Like the sense of foreboding right past the trees, getting closer and closer. Yuki turned to where this strange sensation was pointing; he knew what this meant. “He’s Here.” He said, unsure how he knew, but he did. As the spirit stepped into the clearing Yukimaru put in his headphones one more time. Music was always how he channeled his focus. And as his battle playlist started, he was filled with adrenaline and that will to fight once more.
”Bok wah oblaan, Joor”
“Tsk, When ya’ gonna learn we don’t understand your ugly ass.” He said, getting into a low stance, holding the axe to his right. “Just like we planed, Let’s start out with the Ankle Biter. Go.”
Yukimaru dashed the second he felt the wind at his back. As long as nazzy was able to bend the wind in front of him away, and push his back with it, his speed would have easily doubled or tripled from the first encounter. Without air resistance to slow him down, Yuki’s feet almost had trouble keeping up, each step was like a jump.
His main goal was to get behind the creature through the legs. Yuki was expecting a downward or a horizontal slash, and had dodges already in his mind; he had formed these little combination fantasies when he came up with the plans. Yuki wasn’t good at chess-style strategy, but he was imaginative and could visualize a fight beforehand to almost queue up these sorts of combos and counters so they happen automatically.
Horizontal was the most desirable choice. Yuki would only need to perform a simple shoulder roll to dodge the attack. His aim would take him under the creature, and have him strike at the right heel as soon as he got up. Without missing a beat, he would bring the axe back around, continuing the momentum and striking the left one at the same time.
If he struck Downward, he would spin right around the blow and use that spinning momentum to strike upwards at the wrist that attacked him. Not the desired target, but a good one all the same. Hopefully reeling from a loss of a hand, Yuki would try to continue the original plan but going around the long way, rather than through the legs.
But this all depended on Nazzy to continually push him forward, and to react fast enough to Yuki’s movements and dodges. And if something didn’t go according to plan, it was up to her to get Yuki out of trouble.

He’s here.
Those two words sent an uneasy prickle up Nasrin’s spine and, though her own eyes saw nothing out of the ordinary when she looked towards the trees, she very much believed them. The wind whispered nervously against the magi’s elfish ears in response to the danger that was drawing near and she swore she could feel this sort of… dread; it turned her skin to a swath of goosebumps. Instinctive fear maybe? (Like a rabbit scenting for wolves.) Yukimaru seemed far more certain of the spirit’s presence than just this vague sense, but Nasrin was far too focused on the matter at hand to break the silence with questions on how her companion knew that he was coming.
Either way, the spirit was apparently invisible to their mortal eyes now. Which sucked. Haha well, the mission had promised danger and thrills. They were just getting their fill of it now.
❝Just like we planned,❞ The fair haired magi murmured to herself once Yuki spoke— comforting herself with the knowledge that they had a plan —and all of her focused shifted toward reaching for the breath of her magic once more. The wind jumped to life in response and the blades of grass in the clearing bowed as it whistled forwards in pursuit of Yukimaru, wrapping itself around his limbs to protect and propel him along in the charge. An invisible hand pressed against his back, air buoying his steps to the point of barely brushing the ground, and Nasrin kept a protective eye on her ally where she stood with avian hands lofted up to cast all of this.
The fact that she couldn’t exactly see the enemy that she was shoving Yuki towards was making the magi anxious, but if she could just find a hint— there! Pale blue eyes snapped towards the sight of a metallic gleam flashing through the air, the spirit’s blades winking back into sight so that they could strike at the human who was nearly in range. That one glimpse was all she needed to get a sense of where the spirit stood and a look of hard ferocity stole onto Nasrin’s expression as she decided to intervene. Yuki was fast, he could likely dodge the attack if she kept up with her protective gusts, yet if there was another opportunity to lighten the danger (she would do everything in her power) the air magi was raring to take it. This came in the form of shifting all of her fine-tuned, supportive magic to one hand as the other wrist flicked, swirling a twister to life on her palm, before Nasrin went on the offensive and blasted it right at where she hoped the beast’s face was. Somewhere below and between the blade’s handles was a good bet.
She didn’t know if this would even hit their opponent while he was in this strange, incorporeal state, but at worst the swirling torrent of wind could be a distraction for a moment or two. Hopefully long enough for Nasrin to renew her efforts at shoving Yuki forward, through the spirit’s legs, and giving him the time to strike at their enemy with a swing of the axe that was given more oomph by the manipulation of her magic. Regardless of whether the attacks hit or not, the air magi was tense down to the tips of her fingers, ready to whisk Yuki back out of range as soon as it was needed. 579 WORDS ● Yukimaru DDos ● blasts pokemon battle music in the background

spirit sighting
"My blades hunger." ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 312 words | Such arrogance. This mortal was nothing more than a child and it showed in the way he spoke to a being whose grandeur and experience far exceeded his own. The outcome would be the same regardless of the addition of the foolish child’s newfound toy. His surety that the battle was already decided drained away when the mortal sprang into motion. He was taken aback by the mortal’s speed.
His blades would crisscross and draw the shape of an ‘X’ in the air as he sought to catch the mortal in his assault, but to no avail. The mortal was simply too fast and a further complication arose when a blast of air struck his face with force enough to rock his neck backward; his attacks were robbed of the strength necessary for them to strike true. The axe bit deep into his ankle, prompting something like a grunt from him as he dropped to a knee, which he would use as a pivot point in an attempt to catch the mortal with a backhanded swipe of the cleaver in his left hand. He would use the momentum to assist his arm in propelling his other cleaver at the Traitor’s favored child. It flew end over end and would strike the woman if nothing was done to deflect or otherwise alter its course.
He would draw once again on the energy of the plant life surrounding them. Grass would wither and brown in a long swath around him as he sapped each blade of its life force. It was nothing compared to the vitality that he could feel just beyond the tree line, but it would be enough. He would use his newfound strength to hobble his way to the edge of the clearing. Given the previous encounter in the forest proper, it would be safe to assume what the spirit intended.

Blades Beneath the TreesLocation: Mungu Island Time: Night Yuki's Phone: What I'm Made of Energy flowed through Yukimaru as his senses and reflexes went on overdrive. As he charged at the demon he saw the axes draw back in the shape of an X. It wasn’t a stretch from his original expectations. The thing about cross attacks is that it left a hole exactly where Yukimaru was aiming anyways: right below.
Yukimaru dove between the two blades literally with the speed of wind. In one fluid motion he tucked his head and rolled back to a standing position. The heaviness of the metal battle-axe made it a bit of a wobbly getup, but he planted his foot and directed all that momentum and inertia into his swing. The axe dug deep into the right ankle. In honesty, he didn’t know if the demon had an Achilles tendon, but it hurt nonetheless. As the creature went down, Yuki brought the axe back up to strike the left one. However, the demon wasn’t going to let that happen easily. A stone cleaver came swinging right at Yuki.
Adrenaline pumping reflexes on high alert, and there was no time to think. Yuki wrenched his left arm back, bringing the axe between the demon’s cleaver and his chest. His arms and body tensed as the cleaver struck the metal shaft of the axe. The force was more than he was expecting. The force flowed through him, his arms remained but he wasn’t in a good stance, Yuki got sent flying to the creature’s right. His body and head hitting the ground hard on impact.
Yukimaru gasped as the wind was knocked out of him. One of his headphones got loose and flung itself who-knows-where. But he knew he couldn’t stay down for long. He had to keep his eyes on the creature, make sure there wasn’t a follow up attack. He struggled as he lifted his head and torso just in time to see the cleaver fly. He watched as it flew end over end, unable to do anything about it.
“Nazzy!!!” He called, rolling back onto his feet and running over to where she was.
If she were injured, Yukimaru would immediately remove the red scarf he was wearing and try to wrap the wound. He had hurt himself weapons training more times than he could count, this was what his mother always did. “Are you okay?” he’d ask, even though the answer was probably quite clear. After an answer he’d follow up with a simple “Can you fight?” each answer would honestly bring the same result. Yukimaru was determined to end this creature here and now. So Yukimaru would once again stand and take his fighting stance ready to keep going.
However, hopefully this wouldn’t be the case. If Nazzy managed to redirect the blade with a gust of wind they could still fight together. “You okay?” he’d ask, his eyes looking at the where the cleaver ended up. His breath was heavy, his back and his head were sore, his adrenaline beginning to fade, and there was definitely something weird with his vision as his low stamina began to take root. He didn’t have many attacks left in him that was for sure.
“We injured him. But we gotta finish the job.” He said, taking a fighting stance and staring at the demon now limping towards the tree line. “You ready for the Guillotine? Let’s end this here and now.”

Yes! A silent cheer went up in Nasrin's brain, rejoicing her success as the blast of wind visibly swayed the spirit and gave Yukimaru the opening he needed to slip behind it. They'd managed to strike a blow. Admittedly, clipping the back of the spirit's leg was a far cry from ending the fight and claiming victory, but the knowledge that a pair of mortals could wound their otherworldly opponent boosted Nasrin's confidence considerably. One hit meant the potential for more and, with luck on their side, they could protect the innocent people who would surely be left at this creature's mercy otherwise.
Too bad that the air magi was given a rather rude reminder of their foe's power right after.
Without warning the spirit pivoted around— turning his vulnerable kneeling stance into a surprise attack —and Nasrin's heart seized in a flash of terror as she was faced with the gigantic cleaver flying at her. The weapon carved through their air with a low whistle and the fair haired magi's attention focused like a laser onto its approach, watching it tumble end over end with an odd sort of slowness that made her feel like she had to drag her limbs to react. But react she did. Nasrin's magic reflexively jerked onto the defensive where it bent the air between her and the spirit, desperately trying to cushion her from the edge of the blade, yet there was no stopping its momentum and she only managed to take a small sidestep before the distance was closed.
Sharp, slicing pain bloomed into life in the area of her chest and Nasrin loosed a bird-like shriek of noise; a combination of both pain and alarm. After stumbling for half a second the air magi was now the one to drop to one knee, hands pressed to her chest, before she urged herself to be brave enough to look down. There was, well, blood. On her avian hands and beginning to soak the fabric of her shirt, oozing from a diagonal slash that went from the right side of her collarbone down to just below her left shoulder. It throbbed and burned but, dazedly, Nasrin noted that the cut didn't look too deep— the cleaver had just grazed her in passing.
She might have been thrown into more of a panic (not at all used to battle or being wounded like this) if it were not for Yuki charging over to her to offer his help, but his questions were a welcome distraction and she winced before meeting his gaze with a watery smile. ❝I'm... okay. So don't lose your head over me, dear, I'm not done yet.❞ Just breath; in and out. Laying down to cry right now would do nothing but make it certain that they would die here.
The pressure of Yuki's scarf on her wound didn't exactly help with the pain, however Nasrin was still grateful for the help since it meant that the bleeding was now slowed enough for her to get back to using her magic. She would have to get some sort of medical attention after this but— for now? —there were more pressing matters to attend to. The spirit was trying to escape back to the trees. ❝We can't let him get back! He'll just, recover and attack again,❞ She urged before nodding in response to Yukimaru. They were both on the same page, which meant that it was time for the finishing blow. ❝Be careful.❞ With this conviction in mind Nasrin pulled herself back to her feet and brought her hands up, fingers flecked with crimson and ready to cast, before the wind shifted and howled and began to push at her partner again as she bid it. As soon as he was ready to charge again she would likewise be ready to support him and she stretched out with one arm to close talons of swirling wind around the spirit. The air magi's aim in this was to slow their opponent down, keep it in place and trapped by magic until Yukimaru could strike.
