Reply at your own time I know you're busy. Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Wandering aimlessly. That's what the older Magi found himself doing this morning. The workaholic had been forced to spend the day at his leisure. Which as far as Elijah was concerned was the worst metaphoric sentencing his colleagues could have been giving. There was a reason the man worked the that many hours. There was a reason he took on that immense workload. He hated to be home. Or I suppose to be more specific,
He hate to be "home" alone.
Home wasn't a collection of walls. It wasn't a roof over your head. It wasn't the place with the bed or balcony or stove. It wasn't the place one kept their shit. That was a storage unit or a shelter. No. Home was a place you belonged. Home was a place you returned to with a sense of joy. Home was where you were hugged around the neck by a loved one and around a leg by your little one. Where he lived was not a home. It was the opposite in fact. Practically a black hole, a void of anything that a home was supposed to be.
So it was for that reason that Elijah found himself wandering aimlessly. He couldn't stand to stay in that void. Sure, it held his accumulated things and yes, it was the place where he slept the times he hadn't passed out at work on his desk. But gods, he hated it. He hated every time he opened the door to nothingness. He despised waking up to, walking through, even leaving such a place. He hated it.
Elijah's hand felt for the door handle and was successful in its quest, not before smudging the glass door however. The smallest of frowns would form as those fingers wrapped around the handle. He hated causing more work for someone else. With an easy swing, the older magi walked in to ...... immediately smile. After losing his sight Elijah's other senses had skyrocketed in sensitivity. So when he literally walked into a wall of delicate floral scents, it was difficult to not smile. A small bell would announce his entry to whoever was working such a delightful place. To whoever were to greet the newcomer they would witness a man in jeans and a light pullover. No white cane would be in sight since he never used it in the understanding embrace of Haven's city. However, his wearing such darkly tinted sunglasses could be seen as odd to one who was observant. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Since she'd awoken this morning and found her way to the shop where she would spend the next few hours, it had been a rather quiet day for Nasrin. Which she couldn't complain about. Haven always did have this sense of peace about it— imbued in the pretty greens of tree leaves lofted high above the buildings and the crispness of fresh air —and the air magi enjoyed the times when she could be alone with her flowers. She was equally happy to chat with any customers who drifted in as the time went by, but the quiet left her chances to just think. Just be. And that was... nice. She felt as comfortable in here, behind her desk and surrounded by colorful blossoms, as any place in her home back in the residential area of the city.
The lull in activity buzzing around her store also provided Nasrin an opportunity to get a bit of tidying done which came in the form of checking on a few seeds growing in pots in the back (new flowers, new potential products that had to be coaxed to life) and general neatening up around the store. You could call her system a sort of organized chaos, really— a few too many things shoved on all of the shelves but all ordered and, most importantly, sensible to Nasrin's mind. She knew where everything so the bit of... extra crowding mattered little in the end. Moving pots to and fro was enough to land her with splotches of dirt all over her bird-like hands, however, and the air magi had just finished wiping the grime off with a towel when the bright, tinkling notes of a bell rang through the shop.
The twitter of birdsong that Nasrin had been whistling to the empty air cut short as she turned her attention to the front door and a bright, practiced smile pulled at her lips when she noted the man entering. ❝Welcome! Do come in and let me know if I can help you with anything,❞ It was a greeting she'd given, in various forms, dozens of times to dozens of customers. She knew almost every regular by name and would treat them like dear friends, but she didn't remember seeing this man's face before. The dark glasses were rather distinctive; same with the braided hair. This made him a first time customer, then! Oh that was always something to be excited about and, so far, Nasrin was pleased by the way he smiled upon stepping inside.
❝I don't believe that I've seen your face before. Is this your first time here?❞

Thank you for your patience. Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face What a nice voice. That was Elijah's first thought upon hearing the greeting. The female presence complimented the aromas pleasantly with both kindness and energy. Out of habit the man angled his head in the direction of the shop owner. "Thank you." Elijah retucked his hands into the fleece pullover he wore. The warm welcoming tone alone was enough to cause the corners of his lips to rise a touch more. "Uh, no. No, I haven't been here before." The man said, inhaling deeply through his nose. Fully appreciating the scents.
"I'm honestly surprised I haven't been here before." Elijah said as he reached his hand out gingerly to brush his fingers against a nearby potted fern on a nearby display shelf. "You do a really good job. They're really happy." The man stated, his smile never faltering as he rubbed a single small leaf in between two fingers with a gentle fondness. Glancing up from the potted cutie Elijah shared his smile once more with the woman as he stepped forward to enter the store more so. "How long have you been h--?"
Thump.
--? Elijah blinked in shock at the feeling of something thump against his forehead. Hands rising up quickly he felt around the object that he had unintentionally just bumped into. Vines. Leaves. Container. Round. A touch cold to the touch. Round bottom. Sus-? Suspended in the air? A ... A hanging plant. Elijah could only sigh in annoyance with himself. That's what he got for not paying attention. Any average person surely would have easily stayed clear of the, he assumed, lovely holiday display the shop keep had decorated. "Sorry." Elijah managed to say, nothing bruised but his pride. "I didn't knock anything over, did I?" when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Ah, a compliment towards her skills in tending to the plants? Now that was a surefire way to put oneself in Nasrin's good graces (not that it was a very exclusive club) and the crest of feathers on the magi woman's head practically preened at the words. A delighted little chirp followed, sounding something like a giggle, and Nasrin's smile only stretched wider as she clutched the dirtied towel between both hands. There was nothing she loved more than getting to interact with a new, friendly face among the company of her flowers. ...well, it was actually a close second to her fondness for the flowers themselves, but you get the point.
❝Why thank you,❞ It was safe to assume that this man was an earth magi, then, since he spoke of being able to sense the flora's emotions. How fascinating. Nasrin had always wondered what that was like— the ability would surely have helped a florist such as herself get started, when she only had wilting stems and leaves to clue her into what the plants needed. Idly, the air magi also noted the earthy green of vines coiled through her guest's hair and decided that the aspect suited him.
It became obvious that the man was about to ask a question and so Nasrin's attention was brought back from its wanderings, though he never quite got to finishing it. The fair haired magi's eyebrows shot up as he was interrupted, both in speaking and stepping forwards, by bonking head first into a hanging plant and her grip on the cloth loosened as she jerked one avian hand up towards her mouth, lips now formed into a small O of surprise. Oh dear. ❝Oh my are you alright?❞ Ever the mother hen, Nasrin's first instinct was to worry over the man and any injuries he might have sustained. The air magi slipped out from behind the counter whilst she spoke and she closed the distance enough to leave a foot or two of space between the two magi yet be close enough to examine for any blood or bruises. Thankfully, he seemed to be unscathed. And the poor hanging plant was also no worse for wear, besides a few dropped leaves.
Her next response was to loose a bright bubble of laughter at his question and she shook her head. ❝No no don't worry. Nothing damaged. Though you may have gotten a bit of dirt in your hair.❞ Said with another grin. Come to think of it though... it was a bit odd that he'd walked right into the plant. There was no missing the thing in its bright, pastel blue pot and there had never been any other incidents with customers bumbling into it, so why now? He could simply have not been paying attention, but the occurrence had her mind wandering back to strange, tinted glasses covering the other magi's face. Not the type to wear during the winter months. Was it possible that he had problems seeing, then? Maybe. It wasn't all too rare to come across magi with disabilities (almost everyone wore their own scars) and, though she was very curious, Nasrin swallowed back the question forming on her tongue. She doubted it would be very polite to go peppering him with questions about something that could dredge up bad memories. So she just chuckled again, used one hand to steady the hanging pot, and turned back towards the front desk.
❝There aren't any other hanging things around to surprise you, I promise. I usually try to keep the store very danger free, you know, wouldn't do to have injuries during the workday.❞ Once she'd reached the front again Nasrin spun around to face her guest. ❝Ah, by the way my name is Nasrin. It's a pleasure to meet you Mr...❞

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face "Yeah, I'm alright." Elijah would reply with a frown. The expression was one of a quiet passing frustration. Annoyance with himself for having not been paying attention. Annoyance for allowing his disability to get one over on him. An inward spark of bitterness flared within his chest before he did what was always done. Elijah pushed it back down. His lips twinged as the inward emotional shoving passed. A small smile would inch at the edges as he turned his head to face the woman. She had hurried to his side after all. It was only polite to "look" at her while speaking.
"That's good." Elijah replied to her assurance. His hands brushed up the hanging pot once again to brush the plant's leaves and vines. Finicky little thing, wasn't it? Only an earth magi seemed to be ablet to laugh silently to himself in this situation. The woman who, for all intents and purposes, owned the merchandise had found no fault in his mistake.
The plant? Furious. How dare he bump into it and dishevel it! Leaves it was ready to release yet had been forced to drop outside of its grasp. "Sorry." Elijah chuckled quietly to the vines that metaphorically had crossed themselves in irritation. The moment didn't last long. After an explicit tongue thrashing over manners and begrudged forgiveness, the earth magi would only then allow his own hands to return to himself. Seemed the plant was only willing to do so because of the calming touch of the woman who cared for it so.
A shaking of his head indeed set tiny bits of dirt falling to his shoulders and floor. The laughter however seeemd to pause the atmosphere. It was light. Traveling in genle swoops and casting the room in a pleasant warmth. The smile that had originated as a manner of practice it now softened with sincerity. To think a kind voice could have that affect on the world. "Heh, thank you. I'm sure you do a wonderful job. It's my fault for not paying attention." The smile shifted into a light hearted grin. The store owner's steps were light as she returned to the front desk she had been before his gaffe. Even her steps were delicate.
"Kingsley." The earth magi answered. "But I'd prefer you call me Elijah." A moment passed as he swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat. "The pleasure is mine, Nasrin." Truly, was this woman's voice a musical instrument first and a manner of communicating second? Every laugh and syllable uttered created flutterings within his chest. Quite the foreign sensation after all these years. "I hope you don't think this too forward of me to say but you have a lovely voice." The compliment would be made casually, much like a side comment on the weather. At his age the anxiety of such a statement had dwindled to near non-existent. And so he would merely return his hands into his jeans' pockets as he confidently smiled matter-of-factly. when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Though she had no way of knowing what silent "words" were being exchanged between the man and her touchy little plant, Nasrin still observed the few moments Elijah spent brushing his fingertips over its stems and leaves in what looked to be an apology and felt another low burble of amusement. Was it chiding him for being clumsy? How funny. Still, the air magi hoped that he wasn't getting too terrible of a chewing out for that innocent mistake.
With that brief mishap behind them, Nasrin settled into place behind the front desk with her elbows leaned onto its surface and clawed fingers interlocked under her chin. She'd always liked to work standing so, rather than the normal height suited for a chair, this particular desk was raised to the level where she could comfortably lean forwards. Sitting in one place all day was a bore (not to mention unhealthy) and it suited the fair haired magi's penchant for flitting around the store to water plants, adjust displays, and gather blossoms for bouquets in between customers. She liked to keep busy; it made even the most mundane of days more memorable.
❝Elijah,❞ She echoed with conviction, evidently accepting that he wished to do away with any formalities, and began to clear away a new little spot in her head for his name to find a home. People were something that Nasrin never forgot. Names, faces, the personalities and quirks that went with them— she took pleasure in filing all of them away in her already expansive repertoire of acquaintances. Any new face was a potential new friend. And she loved making friends, especially when they played well with her leafy children and paid her such sweet compliments. ❝It really is a shame that you haven't visited before. Both the plants and I already think that you make lovely company, at least that's what I think they're thinking. I'm not lucky enough to speak their language.❞ As she spoke, her smile was affixed firmly in place all the while before that last, casual compliment prompted Nasrin's fan of tail feathers to ruffle softly behind her. Oh she definitely liked him so far.
Unseen to her customer, Nasrin's expression became dominated by a more feline-esque grin (the cat who caught the poor canary) and she next breathed out in a low whistle, obviously just showing off now. Twittering out all kinds of musical birdsong was her forte. ❝Not at all,❞ She replied with delight. ❝Though I might have to call you out for flattery... mostly because it's working. Haha. You're quite the charmer, Elijah.❞ Not that she minded. No the fair haired magi was quite fond of his voice and easy confidence, interest piqued in a way that she hadn't felt in a while.
❝So then. Did you come here looking for anything in particular? Or was it just to get to know my flowers up close and personal and pay me compliments?❞

Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Elijah would be the first to admit with a gruff annoyance that over the years of being blind there were times he would forget facial expressions. How they could influence another's communicating. It was understandable to an extent. He'd been without the benefit of facial cues for close to a decade now. Such a moment tended to occur during his personal time, in the presence of friends. So the fact that he was at this level of lax was impressive all on its own. At a later point in time, thinking back on this moment, he'd blame the woman's voice.
A thoroughly pleased smile would cross his lips as he was not only called out on his premise but was in turn informed it was effective. Oh, he liked this young lady alright. "It's easy to be a charmer when all I have to do is comment on the obvious truth. Even a blind man can manage that." That low whistle of hers. It was simply goose bump inducing given another day.
"Well to be honest I had no plans." The man began. It was always difficult for Elijah to be shepherded away from his work for a day by his own little sheep. After the loss of his wife and daughter it was all he could do but to bury himself in his work. If his mind was not distracted, it wandered to subjects that weren't healthy to focus on for lengthy periods of time.
The earth magi would walk forward, his boots sounding with every step. The vibrations through the ground guided him easily to the counter that the pleasant woman stood behind. "But now I'm reconsidering my empty day." Elijah would say with the same smile. "After some thought I would actually be interested in a flowering plant if you cared to donate some of your time. My office could do with a natural air freshener."
"But after that my day returns to being empty of a schedule again." The man would rest an elbow casually upon the counter top. "I wouldn't mind trying out that last idea of yours if you were open to it." when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Obvious truth. A charmer indeed, though you wouldn't see Nasrin complaining about the treatment. ❝Pffff—❞ The air magi caught the beginning of a flustered giggle between her teeth before muffling the sound further by pressing the back of her hand against her mouth. She half wanted to chide Elijah again for flaunting his sweet tongue, with how disarming it was becoming, but Nasrin very quickly became focused on the second portion of his reply.
Ahh, so he was blind. She had suspected as much (at least some sort of impaired vision or sensitivity to light, based on the glasses) yet it was a different matter entirely to hear the confirmation out of the earth magi's own mouth. Well she was glad to have that mystery cleared up, either way. It would have been impolite to come out and ask... plus that explained the little mishap with the potted plant. The only caveat here was that that information prompted a whole other host of questions to sprout from the depths of her mind, worming in like weeds— what had caused it? How did he get around so well? Did his magic help him somehow? Curse her insatiably curious mind, it was running away with the fair haired magi before she could think to reign it in and this left Nasrin staring a few beats too long— gaze searching the dark surface of Elijah's glasses from afar —before she snapped back to attention. Haha oops. She felt momentarily guilty even though her guest had no way of actually seeing her staring.
Her focal point once again became the words that Elijah was speaking and a pleased grin returned to quirk the corners of Nasrin's lips. Consultation on a bit of flowery decoration. That would be her area of expertise and, compounded with her current fondness for the man asking for help, she was thrilled to help. ❝If it's a flowering plant you are looking for then I think I can happily lend both my time and aid. Really I would like nothing better.❞ M-hm.
Really that was all that was needed for her thoughts to want to begin wandering, ideas and visualizations of flowers that would be the best fit flickering to life in her mind's eye, but her florist's brain didn't get all too far. Elijah leaning forward against the desk was a bit of a distraction, so was his voice. ❝A free afternoon? Well that sounds nice,❞ Oh, her cheeks felt a bit warm. Apparently a dusting a pink had managed to sneak its way onto her face when Nasrin hadn't been paying attention. Probably because the earth magi was closer now... The desk was not overly wide, putting the two magi in relatively close proximity; about the distance to comfortably reach out and give Elijah's nose a cheeky poke if she saw fit. ❝Though I think you would make a handsome fixture to add to my shop, standing around complimenting me all day is bound to get boring. Unless you are proposing we go out somewhere? As in: are you asking me on a date, Elijah?❞

Could I interest you in a cup of coffee? Hmm? Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face The woman's laugh was even musical. How was it that every connotation and sound made seemed almost as if a melody? Even her actions, her vibrations through the earth of which allowed Elijah to see, were delicate. Near artistic and elegant as a dancer's movements. Was she afraid of leaving her fingerprint upon the world around her? Or was she just considerate and soft with every living thing she encountered?
Elijah didn't bother being shy with the smile that crossed his lips. Handsome, hm? There was a voice in the back of his mind that was thankful he'd apparently pulled himself an outfit that wasn't affronting on the eyes. Couldn't claim that every day. According to some of the ladies of his work he'd allegedly worn gag inducing clashing of colors, patterns. Fashion in general. Luckily it was hard to go wrong with jeans, sneakers and a leather jacket.
Boring, huh? It would only get boring once this Nasrin stopped being so delightful to explore. But the earth magi wouldn't state so. Even an old man like himself knew how sappy that could come across as. Even if it was true. Are you asking me on a date, Elijah? The inquiry caused the man to blink behind those heavily shaded sunglasses. It was almost as if someone only now clicked a lightbulb on above his head. This was the first time since Serena that he'd ever really found himself admiring someone else in this manner.
It had been eight years, almost a decade, since his wife passed away. Never had he knowingly or unknowingly (to his knowledge) ever really placed himself in this situation since that day. He'd been complimenting, yes. But she was right. He had crossed into flirting territory. Very obviously now looking back upon his previous words. The almost hilarious epiphany that should have been overly evident multiple sentences ago caused the man to pause. Pondering the question. Was he asking this lovely sounding woman on a date?
.... "Yes." Elijah concluded with a new self aware smile. "Yes I am actually. If you were interested that is." The earth magi rose a brow in light hearted curiosity. Both at how he had grown into the person that could ask another woman on a date and also at whether she would take him up on his offer. "I wouldn't be opposed to going out. Though I doubt there's anywhere else in the city that," Elijah would smell the air once, "has as nice an aroma."
Elijah thought a moment, "Though I wouldn't ever be heard saying the smell of coffee is anything but pleasant." when it's only in my memory Minnie of GS

Up until that point, Nasrin had been trekking on through the exchange with not a sliver of nerves appearing to hold her back, yet the pause that met her words made the fair haired magi feel something like... apprehension. Had she misjudged Elijah's intentions? Pushed more than what was acceptable? She really hoped not— since she already quite liked him and was enjoying the conversation —but the way he quieted was enough to shake her confidence a bit. She had no way of knowing what he was actually thinking, and that sense of wondering and fearing the worst placed a worried crease between Nasrin's brows as she held her tongue to wait. Of course that whirlwind of thoughts made mere seconds feel like an eternity.
A soft breath of relief slipped past her lips once Elijah spoke and Nasrin inwardly chastised herself for being such a worry-wart. She'd always been talented at reading people, after all. ❝Interested. Haha, yes, I think I would be interested,❞ She replied breezily, an audible chirp of enthusiasm to her tone. Now, Nasrin had never been a stranger to fleeting infatuation— she had a keen eye for beauty in all its forms and was not afraid to court her interests —and the air magi could feel those telltale flutters in her chest, yet it had also been a while since she'd gone on a real date. Even a spontaneous one like this. To say that she liked the idea of being taken out for one right now was an understatement. ❝You are very kind for offering.❞
❝Oh there you go again, sweetening me up with so many generous compliments about my work. It's my weakness, you know,❞ She gave her head a small shake before hiding the smile that creep'd back into place behind her hands. Not that it was really necessary. ❝You are right that nothing can hold a candle to the smell of flowers, though. Simple fact. ...still, coffee does sound tempting right now.❞ If you asked Nasrin about her personal preference, she'd say tea, but a cup of sugar drowned coffee was nice every once in a while.
❝Hmm, alright, I accept. Coffee date it is.❞ WORDS ● Elijah Kingsley ● nasrin: cup of tall, dark, and handsome. yes please
