[break] Audrey stood on the sidewalk, waiting for the guy she had been told could help her. She needed to find someone, and she also needed to get even. She had the misfortune of remembering everything she said while drunk. Audrey sighed, leaning against a nearby building's wall thinking about it
"Bartender another!"
"Absolutely not you are cut off."
"What? I've only had like..." She paused to count on her fingers clumsily. She gave up after she reached the sixth finger.
"Aw furget it I have too many fingers today." She puffed some air out of her lips, frustrated. Audrey looked at her glass mournfully.
"I need another beer to furget the moron."
"Ex-boyfriend?" Audrey gave a horse laugh at the words of the bartender.
"NO! A cheapskate! Fuggin' hell he walks out withooouuttt paying. You believe it? No MONEY. For ME. That ain't fair. But I can't...f-find him. I...caaaannnn'tttt." It was the most frustrating thing for her, someone skipping out on her payment. She slumped, her chin resting on the bar, still looking at her glass. That was when a fellow patron came up to her and handed her a phone number, telling her to call it for help with what she wanted. She whined at him but took it and stuffed it into her pocket. And then asked the bartender for yet another beer, which was denied. The bartender looked very annoyed too, but Audrey was just far too drunk to notice.
And when she had been hungover she'd remembered the number. Yes she had been feeling like crap, but she still wanted her client to pay her. Or at the very least get even with him so that future clients would know to pay her or there would be hell from her. So she'd called the guy and organized a meet-up today. Now she was no longer hungover because that had been the weekend, and this was good ol' Monday. Her mondays, contrary to the world's belief, did not suck. Especially if she would be able to get even today. That would make things even better. She looked around for the guy she was supposed to meet and plan with. There was a cafe nearby perhaps they could go there. A coffee never hurt anyone after all. Audrey was wearing a strapping black suit and dress shirt today, devoid of tie. This outfit had a greater impact on clients and made them more likely to pay. Still hadn't helped her in this particular case though.

It looked set to be another boring day as Edwin spun a pen between his fingers, pushing the button again and again just to hear that satisfying click, and with any luck drive his next door neighbour mad. Though he had no idea who his next-door neighbour was, nor did Edwin particularly care. After all, he had bigger things to deal with right now, and that was making sure that he could make enough to eat for the next few days. He'd already been stuck on noodles for a week and felt he was starting to go quite mad - or dependent on pasta.
So sitting in front of his computer, it didn't take long before he had a phone call. Phone calls weren't particularly surprising to Edwin - he usually dealt with several a day. What he operated could hardly be called a business, but it was the closest thing to one he could muster with limited resources, and he was good at his job even if he hated that he had to do it. What was surprising was the fact that it was coming from his mobile number. Edwin's mobile was hardly unknown, but she only gave it out rarely for special jobs if only because if he was being badgered by idiots every day of the week he was convinced he would have snapped and set someone's house on fire.
The phone rang a couple more times before Edwin figured he should probably pick it up - as much as he didn't want to deal with yet another moron who couldn't figure out why the file 'HOT_IKIGAI_GURLZ_XXX.EXE' had suddenly led to their hard drive melting and their money being shipped off to god knows where, he did actually need to eat. The mobile number showed that it was a 'private caller', though such a thing had never stopped Edwin from answering before. "IT Solutions. What do you want?"
There was a pause as Edwin listened. "Huh? Yeah, this is Edwin. Who is this...?" Another pause as Edwin listened, now paying more attention to the caller. He couldn't tell much besides it was a woman - probably some business-type. And apparently she wanted to set up a meeting with him. "Wait, what? Who the hell are you? I'm not just heeling at your beck and...huh? That guy?" Edwin grimaced - the woman was describing someone, and he knew exactly who the woman was talking about. "Oh, you bastard, Geoff, you could have at least not given my number to some random..." He coughed, hoping she hadn't caught him muttering. "OK, OK, fine. Fine, where at?" Edwin took out some paper, scribbling down a quick address. "Yeah, yeah...yeah. Yeah. OK, yeah. Yeah, I'll be there. Monday sure, yeah. Right. See ya there." Edwin would have hung up, but the caller had already done so.
He did look at his phone, wondering if he should try back-tracing who'd made the call - but decided against it. Even if he was usually drunk half the time, Geoff was probably the closest thing at this point that Edwin had to a handler (in an extremely loose sense of the word). If that guy gave out Edwin's mobile number, it usually meant something; typically it meant a black market courier job. He hated those jobs, but they paid acceptably and right now, well, money was money.
And so, soon afterwards, Monday had rolled around, and Edwin was trawling downtown, walking towards the address he'd been given - yet another café that he'd never seen before. "Seriously, is Felici just one giant organism that grows cafés?" Edwin wondered to himself, quickly spotting the odd person out - the woman in a black suit and a dress tie, sitting by herself and looking like she was waiting for someone. Well, at least Edwin assumed so, and that was good enough, everybody else here seemed to be at a full table anyway. He walked to a chair opposite her and leaned forward on it slightly. "This seat taken?" he asked the woman. "Need somewhere to sit while I talk to someone about a job." It wasn't a great introduction, true, but it would work well enough to see if this was who was talking to him - and if she didn't get it, she was either not the person he was supposed to talk to or too stupid to be worth working for.

[break] Audrey looked towards the person speaking as she heard the words about needing a seat to talk to someone about a job. Audrey smiled, the friendly intent clearly visible. She gestured for him to go ahead and sit down.
"You must be the guy I was referred to. A bartender mentioned that you could possibly be interested in helping with this particular thing. Name's Audrey. I'm a mercenary, and I've had a client skip out on my paycheck for a job well done. Now I might still not get paid, but I need to take some sort of revenge to make sure people don't get the impression I'm an easy merc to cheat." She adjusted the black gloves she wore, flexing her fingers in them. They were a light leather. Kind of completed the look. Also kept her from having to wash her hands as often. There were many things in the world she had no idea where they'd been beforehand. She wasn't a germaphobe by any means, but the gloves saved water in a way. She could kill someone and not have to worry about washing her hands. The gloves were easily thrown out too if she became aware she was in a spot. The waitress had already come by to pour her a coffee.
"If you'd like to order a donut, I can pay for it. A baked good is the least I can do for you meeting me on short notice." Audrey knew that was not a payment in the least, but hey it couldn't hurt to bribe herself into their good graces with a good donut. She gestured to the waitress and ordered a chocolate donut for herself. Then she picked up the coffee mug to take a sip. Unfortunately, she crushed the ceramic handle and the mug crumbled. Audrey winced, looking at the waitress with the shocked expression.
"I...I can pay for the mug. I'm very sorry. My new upgrade has taken some getting used to." Her forearms were bionic, and she'd sprung for the enhanced strength upgrade. She was twice as strong as a normal human now. It was handy for jobs, but the fine handling had been very difficult lately. The waitress came back with another mug of coffee, a broom and a dustpan.
"Thank you very much." She also noted that the mug was metal this time. So they obviously had had similar problems from patrons before. Audrey was very appreciative of it. ISHY of THQ & ADOXOGRAPHY

As Edwin sat down, he heard the woman - Audrey, apparently - mention the word mercenary, and while he didn't show it, he could feel the hairs on the end of his arm tingle. "A mercenary? You mean, a professional's actually heard of me? Someone's finally going to give me something to do that isn't banal?!" Who knew that bastard Geoff could actually hand out his information to someone useful for once.
But as Edwin listened to her give her spiel, he felt less and less impressed. By the sound of things, it looked like he was being hired to try and clean up after this lady's mess - and he did plenty of that already, and usually it was less dangerous besides the threats continually leveled at him from the safety of across a telephone line. At the very least she was attempting to bribe him with baked goods, which he almost wanted to pat her on the head for the attempt. "Look lady, if you're gonna try to bribe me, at least do it with coffee--"
He said this only seconds before her own coffee mug suddenly imploded in her hand. "...or...don't." Well, this was off to a wonderful start - if she was a klutz like this in regular life no wonder she was having trouble with getting paid. "So let me see if I can get this straight. You are trying to pay me - with goods that I'm not entirely sure you can even hold - to look for someone that got away from you? What, did you abandon social media or just get bored after entering his name into a search engine?"
Edwin rubbed his forehead, and groaned - right now his time seemed like it was being well and truly wasted. He knew it shouldn't surprise him, and yet every time something like this happened - something where his client seemed to have forgotten the basic fundamentals of how a computer worked - it still seemed to surprise him. What was the point of all this goddamn technology surrounding them if nobody knew how to use it?! Apparently everyone was too busy either attaching cybernetics to their body like they were goddamn trading cards or standing around throwing ink spells and generally making chaos in the streets.
So much for optimism at his skills being tested - at the very least doing his regular IT routine made him a fraction of money. Still, he was here now, and he figured he may as well make the most of the occasion. "Well, screw it, you've pulled me out all this way so let's at least see if we can teach you how the Internet works. What's the guy's name?"

[break] Audrey heard the bit about the 'at least bribe me with coffee' and then she broke the damn mug and he just kind of took his statement back. She sighed, apologizing to the waitress again and thanking her for the...erm...less destructible cup. She laughed as she heard him make the search engine comment.
"I can work a search engine fine. However our bartender friend mentioned you might be interested in taking revenge on this guy too. That's all he said to me though. No real information, just a picture." She slid it across the table to the guy when he asked for a name. Hopefully the picture rung a bell or Audrey would be out of luck. Or having to find an alternative. And sometimes alternatives were very fun to find. But this client was becoming a royal BOTHER.
"He skipped out on my paycheck. Now I could hunt him down and throw him against a wall or something. However this has been the second time lately I've had someone try to cheat me. It seems to be becoming popular and you understand why I can't have that." Audrey's emerald green eyes were deadly serious as she regarded her companion.
"The guy's a worm. In more ways than just skipping out on me. He's a gangster, and a loan shark. And while I usually have a grudging respect for people for handling their money so adeptly, he's cheated me. Not an acceptable way to save money, y'see." A corner of her mouth quirked up in a lopsided smirk. ISHY of THQ & ADOXOGRAPHY

Edwin raised an eyebrow as Audrey laughed - it wasn't exactly meant to be a joke, but he could hardly be concerned with that, but what she said the second afterwards caught his attention. "Me? What on earth do I have to do with any of this? Look, I don't know what you've been told, but I can take care of myself, thank you very--"
However as the photo slid across the table, Edwin cut himself short. He picked up the picture and looked closely at it, blinking a couple of times. And then, slowly, a grin spread across his face and he started chuckling quietly. "...oh, this. This is just too perfect." With that, he put down the table and looked right back at Audrey, an evil gleam in his eye. "Alright, now you have my attention."
Edwin leaned back in his chair. "You want information? I've got a bone of my own to pick with this particular bastard, so I'll give you some for free. You clearly already know he's in with the mob, but he's got quite a few alias kept around - he's aiming to take a few steps up the ladder of power, as I understand it. Of course, for as good as he thinks he is exploiting the security in his phone was almost criminally easy - his real name is Leonard Karasinski, or at least that's the name he's got under a bank account which has the most of his money that I can find." Edwin slid the photo back over to Audrey on saying that. "I don't really know much more about him besides what you've said - and unfortunately, I've accrued a sizable debt of my own to him, which I know he has no intention of ever letting me pay off - if he doesn't just sink me deeper into it."
Edwin sighed. "Honestly, I'd like nothing more than to help you ruin him, but he's got a few friends in high places - if I try anything by myself, he's likely to trace it back to me. And I'm not stupid enough to try and take him in a fistfight. But perhaps with your help..." Edwin hesitated - truth be told, he was still rather unnerved that this would get him killed. But then, with the help of someone who might actually be able to give him some protection, maybe there was a chance. "Alright, my price? You help me wipe my debt out with him without me getting killed - or worse - and I'll do whatever's in my power to make sure he stops being a problem for you. Hell, I'll even waive the usual fee - clearing the debt is payment enough." That, and Edwin wasn't hired for sabotage so often he had a 'usual fee', but maybe better not to let Audrey know that. Whatever risk there was, to Edwin it was worth it to not only put one tiresome debtor out of his way, but maybe let the rest of the black market know that Edwin Melchiott was not a man to be trifled with...

[break] The guy was all ready to turn her down. She could tell that much. But then the photo made him completely change his tune and Audrey was glad. Her face didn't outwardly show that feeling though. Her business face purposely showed very little. A poker face made dealings smoother. Audrey listened to the guy's information and a smirk made its way onto her face. Oh this was perfect.
"Friends in high places, and a guy who can defend himself. No wonder he's such a damn cocky bastard. He thinks he can get away with it. Perfect. A perfect candidate to take down a peg." Her emerald eyes gleamed with a mixture of excitement and cunning. She enjoyed targets like this.
"I can take him in a fight. He's only a thug. I have sword and armed melee training from Fokradiin. And if I can break a mug, I'm sure his spirit wouldn't be a problem either." There was a sweet side to Audrey. And then there was the cunning side that enjoyed the thrill of the hunt.
"This won't be the first time I've played bodyguard, you'll probably be glad to hear. I'm completely willing to do that, although it might involve sharing accommodations for a short while so that they won't be able to get in and kill you without me there. That would be unacceptable for both of us." She chuckled slightly.
"As I mentioned, I've roughed up some of my clients who didn't pay up. But I'm looking for something more special. So I really do need to ask what you can do?" She arched a blonde eyebrow in a sort of silent challenge.
"If you think you can wipe your debts, can you take money from his system? Like...say, my merc fee he owes me? And maybe wipe yourself and myself from his records so he doesn't know who the hell to go after?" Audrey liked to think things through. She was a strong individual, but she was also an orphan with few connections.
"If I know them, they won't remember my name. So as long as it's out of the system I don't exist to them. They ghosted my fee, so I'd enjoy being their ghost. Depending on whether you can do that of course." ISHY of THQ & ADOXOGRAPHY
