♔The little girl tugged the bear along as she scanned the row of shelves that were before her. The library was an excellent place, and she was certain that it held all the knowledge in the world and she just wanted to know more. Like why was the sky blue? And why did magi have flowers that grew out of their hair? Why did flowers bloom in spring? Why were bears fuzzy but they couldn’t be pet? Why did humans sometimes like to be awesome? What was the best diet for a magi pet?
The little girl had all sorts of questions and she was more than willing to look for the information to find them. Twirling the long brown hair of the little girl would swish, as would the dress that she was in. She liked to twirl, it was certainly fun. Especially when you had tights on under the dresses. Besides. Why did swirling make you dizzy? The little girl didn’t know but she knew it was fun.
So now Vivi was at the library. She wanted to know more, and she knew that the library was a magical place to achieve that.
Father said that Sasha had to stay home, which was a poopy thing, but Vivi would bring home sweets for her magi pet. That would make it all better. Right now she wanted to learn more about magi! That was because she wanted to know more about Sasha. Did Sasha’s heart beat the same? Was there more than one? What was the reason that whenever Vivi scratched her right in a certain spot Sasha would sigh in happiness. Really Vivi just wanted to know more.
Her father had said that the library had many books on the subject, so to the library, she had ventured. Tugging her bear with her the entire way, the girl had gone after school. She had gotten permission the night before, so she had made her way with the car that mommy had provided. Mommy provided all sorts of fancy cars to look at and the girl was excited to get to go in the first place.
So she found herself in the ‘magi research section’ and was trying to reach a book on a shelf that was just a little too tall. The girl tried jumping, standing on her very tip toes, and even using teddy to reach the book she wanted. It wasn’t working. Stupid grownups and their heights. Pouting she pointed up t the book and exclaimed; “Soon you will be mine!”
By now Vivi was determined to get that book.

► Helping kids is what she does ◄

»Diya hummed as she examined the shelves in the magi research section. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts; so much had happened in such a short time. Drew was dead and Lilith was having a hell of a time. With him gone, Diya stepped up for her friend, her “little sister” (who was older than her but shorter, so it counted); the first thing was to figure out what she needed to know about her kid. Were magi births different? What should she expect from them? Maybe her other friends, like Kaveri and Luca, could aid her, but she felt better with some actual written knowledge in her head.
And there sure as hell weren’t many positive books on magi at the university.
She sighed as she examined the shelves. She did some research online, but as a scientist, she always liked to cross-reference with all the material she could. Unfortunately, the section wasn’t terribly well-stocked. Maybe if she found Nasrin in Camlorn, she could convince her to take Diya to Haven and check out some books there. Or maybe talk to some parents?
She picked a few off the shelf that seemed the most promising. Her pencil scratched off a few from the pull list she wrote, and the list was shoved back into the pocket of her lab coat. Find this, check this, maybe this… gods Lilith… Maybe look for this one…
Her maelstrom of thoughts was interrupted by the sound of a small, determined voice. Diya peeked around into the next aisle of shelves to see an adorable little girl trying her best to combat height differences. She chuckled gently to herself; gods, it was way too reminiscent of Ami. Er, except Ami would literally climb a shelf to get a book if she had to (And it was quite a sight to behold).
Diya walked over with a friendly smile, set her own stack of books on a nearby empty space, and grabbed the book. “This one, yeah?” She said, handing it to the girl with a small laugh. “I like your determination. Never give up, yeah? Here.”

♔ Vivi was as one was call, curious. The little girl wanted to know just about all the things and even though her owl friend had all the answers he couldn’t be with her all the time. Owl friend had explained that sometimes he was busy with important things and that she should put in the effort to learn things all on her own. She so did want to please her owl friend. After all, he knew all the things so she should try and help him learn more things!
Learning more on Magi seemed to be something she could do, and so she was here. Doing just that. If only she could reach the stupid book that was for vertically blessed people.
The tiny human was determined in her goal of learning more about Sasha. Her daddy hadn’t deigned to tell her where Sasha had come from, only that they were hers to deal with. Vivi was bound and determined to be a good pet owner for her best friend. After all, if she didn’t take splendid care of her pet, they would suffer. Vivi only wanted her pet to be happy, and love her of course. And so she was in the library, looking to do research to make her a better pet owner. Sasha did deserve the best after all. The university had some books but they were more on philosophy and how they were of an animal sort of nature rather than human. From her understanding, Magi relied more on instinct and were nothing more than pets or toys for the human race.
The tiny girl already had a pile of books on the floor next to her, but she really, really, really wanted the once certain book that was just a little too high to reach. Just a little too high to achieve. No, she would not give in to the challenge of her shortness. She would prevail. Even If she had to climb the darn shelf. Why were there no stools around? Weren’t libraries required to have stools? Her family’s personal library had a huge ladder in the library that Vivi liked playing on maybe a little too much. Curse the public library system!
The tiniest child of them all was filled with the determination of a lion stalking its prey and she growled a little in remanence of it. “You. Will. Be. Mine.” The tiny human was frustrated at this point and being frustrated made her angry. When she was angry Vivi was, well, prone to temper tantrums. Temper tantrums normally involved screaming until she got what she wanted. This fiercely determined child climbed atop the small stack of books that she had made at her feet. If there weren’t any stools she would just have to make her own.
Or that is what Vivi would have done, and was starting to do, when a tall tanned lady came over. She seemed a little odd, but what was this? Was she offering to help? The girl’s determined grimace turned into the sweetest smile one ever did see. “Oh my goodness. Blessed be the stranger that takes pity on a vertically challenged child.” Grinning Vivi hopped down off of her stack of books and did a formal curtsey, her pink dress flowing outwards. “My many thanks oh lady of tallness.” Smiling she reached out to take the book that the woman offered her. “What is your name? Mine’s Vivianne Lemaire, but because you have done me a great service, I now acknowledge you, and your right to call me Vivi.” Was the tiny child playing pretend a little bit? Maybe. Was it fun? Yes. Giggling she looked towards the tall woman. “Why are you wearing a lab coat? Is it because you are a painter? Or maybe a scientist? Maybe you are here to study me? Oh no, did Daddy put you up to a trick again? I told him that I was big enough to come to the library all by myself.” She pouted, looking up at the woman. “I’m here researching magi after all!” Grinning she tilted her head. “Do you know if there are any manuals for them?”
At the end of the day she did come here to find out how to take care of Sasha the best.

► Internally: "This kid speaks Ethean better than I do" ◄
|
»Diya tilted her head and blinked, a politely perplexed smile on her face. She expected a thank you, or maybe the kid to just be shy and run off, or silence… Definitely not the regal sort of speech that came out of the girl’s mouth. She was extremely well-spoken, did a perfect curtsey, and given where they were in Felici, it probably meant she came from money. Once the shock wore off in a few quick moments, Diya exhaled a short laugh.
“Glad to be of service, oh child of knowledge,” she said with a brief bow. She was all smiles now; there was nothing quite like indulging children and going along with however they decided to have fun. The girl’s joyful giggling only encouraged her to continue playing along. “Thank you for the honor, Vivi; it is a beautiful name. My name is Hadiyya, but please just call me Diya, if you would.”
She picked up her own stack of books and cradled them under one arm. It was her turn to laugh, though that was quickly silenced by the mention of her ‘Daddy.’ Goodness, she must be from money if she expected her dad to send scientists over to study her. And what was that about magi research? She rose her brows but maintained her playful smile; this encounter got a little more interesting. Now Diya was the curious one.
“Ha, no, not a doctor or an artist. I’m a scientist, but I’m not here because of your daddy. I’m here trying to do my own magi research; that’s what science is, after all, yeah? Lots of learning.” She lifted her books up and tilted them so Vivi could read the titles. Various things about Magi, and none on researching little girls. She hummed for a moment. “Manuals? Ha, well, don’t think there’s exactly a manual, yeah? They’re not like … phones or machines. There’s no manual for humans after all, ay? But there are lots of books to read through.” Though not as many as there should be. And fewer good and impartial ones.
“Besides, it’s more fun to read lots of books and piece the ideas together, right? Like a scientist does!”

♔ Vivi grinned up at her white knight with a smile. It looked like she was amused, that was good! It meant that she would be loyal to her. Maybe this white knight could prove useful. After all, didn’t a white knight serve princesses? That was good. It meant she had acquired an ally in the search for knowledge.
She smiled as the woman bowed to her. It showed she knew at least a little proper etiquette, or at least the etiquette that her tutor told her was as such. Her mommy and daddy liked her to be prepared if she ever interacted with nobles. There was a certain way of going about things after all. “Oooh so exotic, such a flair of a name!” The girl grinned, it sounded foreign to her, but she couldn’t be sure. “My many thanks Diya of the white coat and tallness.” The girl was giggling as she continued the introductions between the two.
Vivi struggled to hold her pile of books, but the last one was the one she really wanted to read. It was good to be educated after all! Especially when she was trying to figure something out all by herself. How else would all of her questions get answered? Owl friend couldn’t be here all of the time, so she was supposed to figure it out by herself.
“A scientist!” The little girl exclaimed with excitement how knowledgeable this person must be to be a scientist. “Oh! Do you work under daddy? He researches magi for the university!” Something about biology and… psychology? It was a hard word that the little girl didn’t really understand. “Something about magic and magi and why they can’t use it?” She tilted her head in thought. “Learning is wonderful!” Really, the girl did ask so many questions. “What is your favorite thing to learn about?” She grinned and turned her head to the side in a tilt she had seen her Owl Friend do many times. “Mine is the world!” Sure her voice may have been a little bit louder than normal, but it was still quiet enough for the library. She didn’t want to get kicked out after she had finally gotten that one little book. “But there are manuals for real babies!” Vivi frowned at the woman and pulled out one of the books in her pile. ‘How to parent the best way to grow a human child.’ read the title. “Seeeee?” She smirked. “There are manuals for human babies! Why aren’t there manuals for magi babies and raising them?”
The tiny child had a point, albeit a small one. “I don’t mind reading, but if I had a better idea of what to read, then I could better educate myself!” Grinning the tiny mag child would tilt her head and laugh. “I really like reading things in the Olden language though, that really makes daddy smile!”

»Gods, what a curious little bundle of energy this princess was. Diya, of course, loved it; the endless questions, the boundless excitement, the control she was able to exert on the conversation… heck, it was like looking in a mirror to the past. Her smile, though, was punctuated by subtle lip movements as the gears in her brain churned like a well-oiled machine. Her dad, huh?
“No, don’t work under him, I think,” she said. “I’m a student. But you said your last name was Lemaire, is that correct, my princess?” Even when trying to get some answers, Diya wasn’t going to drop playtime with the kid. As far as she was concerned, there was no need to divide the two activities. She thought for a little bit; yeah, she recognized the name; it wasn’t like the science department was huge. Still, she didn’t know much about him; he seemed more focused on special projects than teaching classes. She got a bad vibe from him. Still, she smiled to Vivi and nodded. “That’s right. I’m sure I’ve taken a class or two of his, or shared some research with him.”
Diya chuckled at Vivi’s enthusiasm. She could never tired of this, honestly. “The world, huh? That’s a big subject, but that’s good! I like anything to do with science; chemistry, physics, runes… there’s so much to learn, yeah? Hard to pick just one.”
When Vivi help up the book, Diya figured out what she meant. “Ahh, that kind of manual. I misunderstood; Ethean isn’t my first language, yeah?” She laughed, which faded to disbelief at her mention of the Olden Language. Wow, this girl was a genius. “Olden language, really? Not a lot of people know that one, you know. Even most students only know a little bit! You just might be the smartest princess in the world, Vivi.”
She gestured over to the table areas. “Well, it just so happens that I’m also doing some research on Magi today. We can read together, if you want. I think I have a few ideas on what books to start with.” She smirked at Vivi. “You know, since there aren’t any ‘manuals’ on Magi kids, maybe we’ll need to write the first one. Wouldn’t that be something? Then lots of people will be able to read the book and learn because of us.”
If Vivi wanted to sit down and read, Diya would lead them to the tables (or, more likely, be led, which was also fine). Once settled, Diya would start spreading out the books she had. Some were on magi observations, others were historical texts, and some others were human anatomy books. There was also one or two on childcare, similar to the book Vivi showed her earlier. "So let's see... Okay, question," she said. "If we don't know a lot about magi, where do you think might be a good place to start? It might help to have a reference."

♔ Of course, Vivi was a bundle of energy, she was surrounded by endless knowledge after all! She just had to find the right knowledge. The right book, the right way to figure things out, and for herself, the right way to move forward. After all, Sasha was really the one that mattered here! Vivi wanted to be the best pet owner she could be!
Aww, it seemed that her white knight didn’t work for daddy. “That’s okay, Daddy works on super-secret things too. The headmaster trusts him!” Was she really supposed to be saying this? No. Did she really care? No. She was proud of her daddy and his work! “He’s super-duper good at his job!” She grinned, “Should I tell him your name? It could get you places.” Hence the super adorable not subtle at all eyebrow wiggles. “My white knight needs to be rewarded after all!” If she had it her way, she would be paid well. Vivi grinned up at the white knight. “Well, there are lots of things to learn about!” She smiled and tilted her head. “Yes! The environment is important and people need to take care of it!” Grinning the girl would tilt her head looking up at the woman of tallness. “Also people too. People are fun to learn about!” Especially Magi. Magi were just so interesting to the tiny child and she wanted to learn all about them.
Vivi would nod seriously towards her white knight. “It is okay, you will learn!” She grinned and tilted her head up towards the woman. “Yes! Daddy and Mommy have been teaching me since I was young. Mommy says its good to be prepared if I ever speak to the gods you know!” She would giggle towards the woman. “I’m destined for great things!” The tiny child would beam up towards Diya and would smile. “I just like reading it you know, all the secrets to be found and all that!” She would give a curtsey as she turned towards her new friend. “I’m not exactly a princess, but mommy’s a politician! Her formal name is Eloise Lemaire, but to me she is just Mommy.” Vivi would grin up at the woman, “Mommy says I have to study hard in order to present myself in the best way possible, especially if I’m to interact with the nobles at this winter’s ball!” Manners did matter to the curious young girl.
“Awesomeness!” The girl would beam up at Diya before following her towards the table that her white knight would choose. She would go with a little hop in her step, making sure to avoid anyone tall enough to knock her down. The tiny child knew enough to stay out of the way of adults. “I dunno about writing one, I’m not much of a writer.” She more liked to read things after all.
Hopping up into the seat at her table, she would put her own books that she had gathered out on the table. She didn’t have many but had enough to start her research. Pulling one out at the question that Diya asked she held it up for the other lady to see. “Well, aren’t they a mixture of animals and humans? Or more mutated animals who can talk to us?” She would tilt her head at the thought. “I have a book on grooming animals here, I felt like it would be best.” Smirking she set it back down on the table and slid It across the way, “After all, I need to know how best to take care of Sasha! Sometimes their fur gets ruffled and I need to make sure they are clean in case daddy or mommy comes in after all!” She grinned up at the woman, very obviously proud of herself. “Sasha is the best pet. They have the prettiest collar!”

»She laughed, both at the cheekiness of this little princess and the idea of giving one of the headmaster’s dogs her name. She waved the idea away with a smile. “Ay, service is its own reward, sometimes,” she said. “I’m sure he knows my name. All of the people who work at the University do.” Not… usually in a positive light, but those details were best left unsaid.
She kept her demeanor playful, but she couldn’t help but get caught on one of Vivi’s sentences. ‘In case I ever speak to the gods.’ Weird, considering the University’s firm stance on atheism, to hear that one of the Headmaster’s trusted would say something like that to his daughter. Maybe it was just to get her to study?
“Ha, I can tell you are,” she agreed. “You’re smart and you’ve got the right attitude, that’s for sure.” She made no comment on the politician part. Diya hated politicians. “Well, at least you seem to enjoy your studies,” was all she had to say. Nobles, balls… hoo, she did not envy this girl. The life of a child of money was not always a good one; give Diya her ramshackle home above a mansion any day, so long as she had the freedom that came with it.
At least Vivi wasn’t miserable. Maybe she was one of the few who just took to it.
She laughed at the girl’s assessment of her writing skills. “The best writers are the best readers; I bet you’d write really great books if you wanted to, ay? If I can write, you definitely can.”
She readied her own books, starting by opening one on anatomy (For babies and children), as well as a book on magi studies, done unfortunately while they were in their camps (and supposedly without subjecting them to testing, but the day Diya trusted that was the day she stopped drinking). The idea was to compare human biology to magi biology. Though… Vivi had a different perspective that made Diya close her eyes for a moment.
Right. Politician mother, Uni father. There’s no way this kid wasn’t being raised racist.
She opened her eyes with a smile and tilted her head right back. “Well, they’re not mutated animals; science can prove that by comparing them. They may have animal-like features, like cat tails and wolf ears, but that’s only visual; their DNA is as different from animals as ours is.”
She looked down at the book slid to her. Grooming. Well… okay, she had to admit, it might come in handy if Lilith’s kids are more wolf-like than their dad. Being clean was important! But now Diya was a little concerned about Vivi’s “pet.” Hopefully that was a literal animal…
“It sounds like you like them,” Diya said, offering the most noncommittal statement. Maybe… hm, maybe she could set a curious mind on a better path?
“Think about it differently,” she poised. “That’s always important when learning; try to think about everything from different sides. What if instead of thinking magi are animals because of their ears or eyes or tails, we think about them as closer to human? After all, they walk and talk and have feelings and can eat the same food as us, and they all have different sorts of… traits, but underneath those, they’re all very… human-looking, wouldn’t you say? So what if we went into our studies comparing them to people like us instead of animals?” She lifted up the human biology book she had opened, so Vivi could see the title and subject of it.
