Haven’s farmer’s market was one of the best perks of the city, according to Cherche. It was a simple set up, with stalls and stands full of fresh foods, handcrafted trinkets, pottery and woven baskets, and so much more! No technology, no electronics; just a community gathering in an area to talk and shop and support one another, as nature intended. You couldn’t beat the smells of fresh food and cooking stalls, nor the sight of handcrafted toys and vendors displaying baskets full of shining fruit. The sound of polite gossip and catching up filled the air with a gentle hum.
She gathered many waves and greetings as she walked through the area at her leisurely pace; she was more than a leader; she was a friend, a neighbor, a person who genuinely cared about each life. She talked with one vendor about his family, and asked how the kids were doing with their latest endeavors. She talked to another woman who was having some romance troubles, and was glad to see she was feeling better about the whole situation. She remembered every name, and the names of families, and all their doings and problems and achievements. Her joints ached, her skin was wrinkled, and she walked with a hunch, but her mind was as sharp as it was a century ago.
She was in a particularly cheerful mood today; Stella was back home, giving her another family member to live with, quelling constant worries, and giving her hope that perhaps she had some more surviving members out there. She stopped near a food stall, where another person was making a purchase, or perhaps wavering on whether or not to buy. Cherche stood next to them with a kindly smile. “These are always so good and fresh,” she commented. “You should certainly try all that you can.”
She turned to the proprietor of the stall, fishing in her bag for some money. “Surprise me, Annabelle, and I’ll cover this one’s purchase.” Before any protests could be made, Cherche handed the money to the young earth magi running the stall, who took it with a smile and began to fill a bag with some foods that she knew Cherche enjoyed; she knew better than to argue with the older magi, who almost certainly paid too much just to be generous. Cherche beamed at the person next to her. “Go on, fill a bag. I won’t take no for an answer.”
The woman behind the stall chuckled. “No, she won’t. Trust me.” Cherche laughed and shot her a wink. She did have something of a reputation among her people.

It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me? On the one hand Althea loved the farmer’s market. There were all sorts of shops and it really was a community gathering together to grow and learn and participate in the city’s commerce. On the other, there were so many magi. So many she hadn’t met and so many she hadn’t talked to yet. This made the cat magi just a little cautious. Sometimes new people were scary, so the woman had a hard time coming to the farmer’s market that the city put on and provided.
And so the tiny pink haired magi shuffled along the streets, her back hunched, her staff supporting her. She wanted to give the illusion of her just being an old person, walking around. She didn’t want to draw attention to herself. Especially when it was so busy. Especially on a day that was so nice in terms of weather. Althea had made her way, stall to stall, picking up the little bits that she needed for herself and for the temple.
The cat magi took her duties seriously, and one of them was to make sure that there were enough offerings for the goddess. Thus Althea had picked up some shiny stones, a few embers from a fire magi blacksmith forge, some fresh purified ice cream from a water magi’s stall, and a couple of feathers that had been woven into a dream catcher from an air magi. Zero magi were the hardest to get the gifts for. Althea knew that the things that she could do didn’t really manifest in a physical form.
It was a hard thing to find something that represented an entire race, especially one that as based in mental powers. She supposed most of what her race could give were prayers, but she felt odd not including a physical object. Maybe there would be something else at the market that she could get. Right now though, she was feeling a little hungry.
What she really wanted was a nice apple, or maybe some blueberries? Althea really was a fruit person. The natural sweetness was just something that she loved. The cat magi’s tail wagged underneath the cloak she was wearing. It might have been summer but if she had taken the cloak off it would have been seen she was a priestess. She just wanted to buy things without any social responsibilities. Apparently, her disguise was too good as she came right into contact with Cherche, the governor of the town, and her boss. Unsure how to respond the woman would just nod, before sighing. Cherche would recognize her the moment she spoke so she might as well get it over with. Bringing her hood down Althea smiled at her boss and tilted her head. “That’s wonderful, I was just getting some fruit.” The fruit really was the best lunch.
“That really isn’t necessary Ms. Du Ame.” Althea’s face would blush at the woman behind the stall. She was perfectly capable of paying for her own purchases. Especially when they weren’t related to the temple. “Seriously, why don’t you just pay the next one.” Althea’s voice would come out squeaky, but she would stand her ground with her stubborn boss. Althea began to fill her bag with various fruits that the woman was selling. It was nice that she had many different types. All types of fruit were yummy, especially when they were as fresh as the ones on the table. “Thank you for your generosity though.” She handed the money over to the woman and wouldn’t take no for an answer. If anything the woman was just going to get paid even more today. The two priestesses were known for being generous. Hopefully, this wouldn’t turn into a full-scale battle of the generosity like it had in the past.
Even if Cherche was the governor, that didn’t mean that she would just get away with paying for Althea’ food. “Darling, we both know I’m too stubborn to let you pay for me.” A tiny smirk would come across the pink haired cat magi’s face. “My reputation won’t let it.”

Cherche chuckled vivaciously at the reveal. Her face fins waved happily against the confines of her hijab. “Althea, my dear! I nearly mistook you for a child.” Still laughing, she greeted her priestess in the normal fashion she greeted everyone: with a kiss on each cheek. “How wonderful to see you in the market!” She knew full well that Althea was a nervous sort when it came to large amounts of people, but she handled it better than she thought she did.
She shook her head; no way was the little cat going to refuse her offer. She did so much for the temple, and did a wonderful job during the festival (especially with all the crowds!); she absolutely deserved this little gesture of kindness. True to form, however, she was as stubborn as Cherche, and the vendor received a double payment from the women.
Cherche shook her head with a smile and a laugh. “You’re a persistent old woman, Althea.” The hypocrisy was absolutely not lost on her. She took her own bag of goods from the woman who was no doubt having a wonderful day due to the two of them. She turned to Althea and nodded for her to walk with her.
“It is a beautiful day today, isn’t it?” She looked up at the sun and closed her eye, giving off a contented sigh at the warmed on her wrinkled skin. All of today seemed beautiful, and having a friend join her in the market made it all the better. Technically, yes, Cherche was her boss, but regarding the temple, she certainly didn’t act like it. The temple didn’t need direction from her often, as she was lucky enough to have caretakers like Althea to keep things running well. She didn’t like feeling like the boss, like there was a divide or an imbalance of power between her and those who worked with her. “How are you, today? Oh, you know, just the other day, I ran into Ms. Lelianna and spoke to her about her garden. My, what a dedicated woman!” She chuckled again. “I get tired just watching young people these days; they’re so full of energy!”

It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me?
The tiny cat magi would scowl up at her boss. Why was it that she insisted on bringing up her tininess more than she had to. It seemed like every conversation he two had, Cherche did not hesitate to bring up that Althea’s frame resembled a child’s. “I am not a child.” The words were out of her mouth in short firm sounds, trying to get the point across to the older magi. “You were not hard to miss.” The governor was a force to be reckoned with and the people of Haven knew her on sight. There was nothing stealthy about Cherche. “I was attempting to buy some food, I completed finding the offerings for Arithelia.” Cherche would know about Althea’s habit of finding the offerings for the goddess if she came to the market. They were tiny things, trinkets, but still, things that represented the beauty and gifts that the grand Arithelia had bestowed upon them.
Pulling her hood back up over the voluminous pink hair that Althea had, she slid back into her hunched over posture. Maybe she could still give the impression that she was no one, and she would be left alone. Maybe the governor had just decided to walk with an old lady. Yes, that would do quite nicely. It wasn’t that far from the truth, but it wasn’t horrifically false either.
She would smile as she paid the vendor for her food. Good, at least in one little smidge, she had gotten her way. Turning towards the leviathan magi Althea would tilt her head. “I would not have lived as long as I have, if I was not persistent.” That much as true, and she wouldn’t go into it further unless Cherche asked. “Is that not true for the both of us?” The question would be posed with a slightly saddened tone, yet one that reminded her of a time when she didn’t have to think of being persistent.
Althea would smile and nod, putting her face towards the sun. “The Sunshine is always good. Especially for naps.” At the mention of them, she would yawn slightly, bringing a cloaked hand towards her mouth to cover it. The priestess was quite a fan of naps. Maybe she would take one after she returned to the temple. Her favorite spot in the gardens should have been open. As long as there weren’t any visitors she would curl up under the apple tree, and sleep a little. Yes, this sounded nice. Althea was jolted a bit out of her thoughts when Ms. Du Ame mentioned Ms. Varna. “Yes, she is quite dedicated, she seemed thrilled that we had taken into account her gardens in our serenity garden.” She smiled fondly remembering the look of surprise on the other’s face. “I’m glad they can have energy in such dire times, it gives me hope for peace.” She almost whispered that last word. “Like the old times.” Cherche would remember, Althea did.

Cherche only laughed more merrily at Althea’s scowl and protest. She looked down at the cat magi with a playful twinkle in her eye and gave her an unmistakable wink. Ah, she did love to tease the shorter magi about her height. “No, of course not; you are much too old,” she said playfully. It was a joke she loved to make because of how old she was compared to the younger priestess.
Her laughter continued at Althea’s observation. “Ah, I suppose I am not,” she said. “I am glad to see you purchasing food for yourself.” You don’t have to use your own money to buy offerings she nearly added. What a waste of breath that would have been; if she said it once, she said it a million times to Althea, but she was as stubborn as they came and the words fell on deaf ears. Cherche didn’t bother to argue anymore. Althea pointed their mutual persistence just a moment later.
“So true,” Cherche said with a sigh. “I daresay you could say that to anyone in Haven and be correct. We all endure.” But not one to leave the note somber, she added more in a friendly tone. “That said, I think there is a better word for us. Stubborn? Hard-headed?”
Ah, naps; Cherche certainly loved her share of them, but not as much as Althea; “cat nap” could have been defined by her. Althea’s yawn caused Cherche to do the same, and she had to admit, opening a window and letting the sun beam down on her in her large bath while she slept sounded lovely.
“Hm hm, she is quite a lovely young woman, isn’t she? If only everyone could care for nature the way she does. Perhaps she wouldn’t mind helping with the gardens herself?”
Her near-constant chuckling died down a bit at the tail end of Althea’s words. Hope. Like old times. She sighed and gave the shorter magi a short nod. “It is proof that hope lives on. Perhaps peace will not come by the time you and I join the cycle, but I feel as though it is not so far away. Faith and hope will see us to those blessed days, my dear. We must continue to inspire both.”

It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me?
Althea’s eyes would narrow as she was laughed at. Just like Cherche to take her height not seriously. The tiny cat magi had told her boss numerous times that she was serious, alas it didn’t seem to matter to her. “Exactly, I’m too old to be teased.” That much was assured to the cat magi. “And you are too old to enjoy teasing me.” She would roll her eyes at the woman. “Don’t you tire of it?”
Althea would smile as she tilted her head. “Why would I not purchase food for myself?” The question was a little disconcerting, but it wasn’t anything that she struggled with. She was paid a livable wage, even if most of her work was non-profit.
Althea would nod at the mayor’s words. “The past years have truly tested our endurance that is true.” The woman would stay silent in thought, as she was contemplating the past few years. It was important that their race realized just how powerful they were, Arithelia had given them many abilities and they would use them, not just for the magi race but for Arithelia herself. It was too important to let her gifts go forgotten. “Obstinate would be my guess” Althea would grin at the mayor as she was jolted out of her thoughts and back into the conversation. “Stubborn is too lenient a word.”
Naps were wonderful after all. They provided short respites of clear thought and a pause in the nightmares that were the riots and the genocide. Gods knew she needed a pause on the thoughts that plagued her. Were her children alive? Were her children safe? Would they ever find their haven? She didn’t know, but naps let her drift from the thoughts of a worried parent.
Althea would grin and nod. “To be honest, I think she might faint if we asked.” Smirking she tilted her head. “You do it.” It was the job of the head priestess to deliver important news after all. “It would mean more to her coming from you after all,” The tiny cat magi side stepped a child who was running happily towards one of the market stalls. “Arithelia has granted her a power that not many earth magi have.” She smiled as she thought of the way she spoke to the plants. “Clear communication with plants is quite a powerful trait.”
Althea would nod at the woman, a soft smile on her face, “Hope is a fickle thing, I’m happy Arithelia has not abandoned us.” She smiled and looked down at the road as they walked. “Hope lives on in Haven. It is all we can do to encourage it, to help others find it, and give peace to those who seek it.” There had been many who had visited her in order to forget. Althea knew that she couldn’t forget, forgetting meant that hope would be lost to her. “We will begin anew under Arithelia’s guidance my friend. I’m sure of it.” She would chuckle a little and tilt her head. “I can only hope that the citizens here can learn a new peace is possible, even when we are gone.”

“Not even a little,” she said with a chuckle. Poor, poor Althea. “You look so cute when you pout over it, my dear. Besides, it makes us both feel younger than we are, does it not?”
She waved her hand as a ‘never mind’ gesture. Cherche meant it was nice to see her eat instead of using her food as offerings, but the old leviathan wasn’t going to go down that road today. If she did, she would be tempted to make more jokes about Althea’s stunted growth coming from lack of food, but even she knew when not to push the cat any further.
She grinned and nodded. “Obstinate,” she agreed. Stubborn was too lenient a word, ha! This was why she enjoyed spending time with the younger magi. She may not enjoy Cherche’s constant teasing, but she was as witty as the older woman and just as clever. What was it about priesthood that made them this way?
She stopped them at another stand so she could buy some more herbs for tea as well as incense. She chatted with the vendor, as she always did, but kept it brief so she could focus on her time with Althea. They never did spend too much of it together outside of the temple or during ceremonies. They were both busy in their own right (and frequently napping, as well), so Cherche wanted to cherish the occasion.
Althea made her laugh once more. “I think she just may! Ah, I believe I will. The dear invited me out to her garden; that will be a good time.” She continued to smile, but her laughter faded as she thought about Althea’s next point. “Mm, truly. I wonder if it is something beyond that, though; you feel it, too, do you not? She has an aura about her, something I cannot quite pin down… Is it really her earth magic, or something more, I wonder?” She shrugged, as if she didn’t just theorize some large implication about the magi and the woods. “I suppose only time will tell.”
With several new, small bags in hand, Cherche led the pair back to their leisurely stroll around the market. “It is, but as long as we hold to it, and keep our faith, we will persevere, and more.” She looked down to her companion with a warm smile. “If Tatara is kind, perhaps we will be close in the next journey, as we are here.”
She gave her another wink (somehow it was so obvious when she did it, despite the eyepatch) and chuckled. “Oh, my dear Althea, I wager that they will find it much more peaceful around here without us old hags making a ruckus every day.”

It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me? Althea would roll her eyes up at the leviathan aspect magi. “Cute? Oh, darling, I’m the furthest thing from cute and you know it.” The pout would continue, as the cat magi shuffled along, leaning on her small cane for support. “Stop teasing me you old hag.” It was said with a smile, and chuckle, but she was serious about the teasing.
Althea would shrug a little and hold her bag closer to her as Cherche waved her off. Whatever she had said, it wasn’t important enough for Cherche to repeat it. Which probably meant that it was more teasing. This line of thought evicted a sigh from the cat magi. Why must they run around in circles with the same thoughts? It grew tiring after a while, even if it was all good fun.
Althea would agree with Cherche’s repeating of her word and nod. “Yes, we are obstinate. I think its how many life experiences we have had.” Basically, Althea was saying they were old. In a nice way. She only really got sassy with Cherche, and only because Cherche drew this out of her. The cat magi would shake her head as the woman seemed to only agree with her. “Or are all of those who serve the great Mother Arithelia this stubborn?” Maybe it was just being a priestess.
The pink haired cat magi would shrink into herself as her boss decided to stop at one of the stalls. She had nothing to purchase here, so she kept quiet in hopes of speeding the process along. The markets were not the best place for magi that didn’t like crowds. Crowds reminded her of riots, and that most certainly was a tough time for the magi. Instead, she stayed quiet, her gaze focused on the ground in front of them. Hopefully, she would keep out of the way of anyone who was coming towards them.
Grinning at the mention of the redheaded earth magi that the two knew, Althea would grin. “Oh be sure to give her the most compliments, it’s quite amusing to watch her fumble and blush.” It was one thing the two agreed upon. Teasing the younglings was certainly un, and Althea had a feeling that Cherche enjoyed it just as much as she did. “Oh yes, she has the potential for greatness, I really think so.” Althea smiled and nodded, before continuing on their walk. “I wonder if Arithelia has blessed her, or if one of her spirits have taken a liking to her.” It was certainly rare, but not unheard of. Every once in long years the spirits of Arceia would take a shine to certain magi. This might be one of those times, she wasn’t sure. “Time most certainly would tell.”
Althea would smile upon Cherche as they went through the markets. “May we both keep the faith, and Arithelia guide us in this life and the next.” The cat magi had strong faith in the mother goddess, and knew the importance of her faith, especially given her condition currently. It was important to try. “Tatara works in mysterious ways.” Althea was not nearly as knowledgeable about the god of death as her compatriot, but she knew enough of his rites through those she had lost throughout her ears.
Chuckling she would nod, “You certainly do terrorize the young ones don’t you.” It wasn’t meant in a negative way, more in a sort of teasing way. “Don’t blame me for that, you are the one making the most ruckus, I’m just cleaning your ruckus up!” it was true, nine times out of ten Althea was placating those that had taking one of Cherce’s jokes wrong. There was a reason she was a therapist after all. “It will certainly be more peaceful when you decide to pass.”

Cherche laughed and put her hands up like the magi was mugging her. “Oh, very well, you wrinkled fossil, I’ll stop for today.” Another chuckle and a smile came from her. She would bear in mind that Althea wanted her to stop, though whether or not she would remember to break the habit remained to be seen.
The mood didn’t wane, though. Laughter and smiles were the background music to their conversation. “You may be on to something there. Though after meeting her at the temple, and hearing stories from Jason, it’s safe to say that we take after our goddess more than we know, wouldn’t you agree?”
Arithelia was a stubborn goddess. Cherche was glad; it would serve her well on this plane, and by extension, every single magi: past, present, and future. It had only hardened Cherche’s resolve, inspired her to continue to fight and lead no matter how much pain life brings. She didn’t have many years left; it was for the best that she make the most of them.
One stop later, and the two old women were back to their chatter. “Ha, so I have seen. It reminds me of a certain old cat, you know.” She didn’t make eye contact. She just grinned. Althea was happy to tease others, but couldn’t handle it herself. Pot, meet kettle.
“She will be one who will watch our people when we are gone, whether she knows it or not,” Cherche said with a nod. “She is already doing a wonderful job. It gives me hope for the future.”
It was hard not to smile around Althea. She could be grumpy without her naps, but there was nobody else she considered to be more of a friend. Even the subject of death was approached lightly, with jokes and smiles. Life would not be as peaceful without Althea, that much was certain. She only nodded at the mention of Tatara; he certainly did, though the same could be said for many of the pantheon.
“Ah, someone has to keep them on their toes,” she said. She howled with laughter at the rest of Althea’s quips. “Ha! Guilty as charged. It will certainly be quieter without me; maybe the Magi will know peace once again, hm?” She laughed again. Ah, it was too much fun to cause a stir; they could rest when she was dead.

It's a perfect day won't you take a walk with me? Althea would offer a scowl towards the Cherche, how dare she call her a fossil? The leviathan magi was older than her! Smirking she shook her head, “Good, maybe you really can learn new tricks.” She nodded towards the woman as they walked.
Althea would nod slowly at Cherche’s comment. “We just might, Arithelia works in mysterious ways.” Althea would never try to understand her goddess, Arithelia was too powerful and ancient to guess at the ways that she worked in the world. “Jason is a nice young man, If only I was younger I would also accompany the Great Mother.” It was a regret for her that she couldn’t serve her goddess in a more formal manner. The divine mother had put the kiboshes to that years ago.
It was true that her goddess was most certainly stubborn. Many a time had Althea wondered if it was yet another magi gift that the goddess would grant to those willing to take up arms, and become resilience in the face of adversity? The camps had most certainly proven that Magi could make it through anything, and would continue to grow and flourish, almost in defiance of the pain and hardships that humans had decided that magi would deserve.
After the contemplation would have ceased the two would continue their conversation. “Oh really, are you talking about George?” Althea would smirk at the mention of George, a lion aspect fire magi that frequented the temple who loved to dish it out for the younglings. “Because I know you most certainly are not talking about me.” Her tail would swish back and forth, as if she were in her younger days, playing with the reeds on the water again. She could only handle it somewhat, and deflection was a good enough cause for the old lady.
At Cherche’s words Althea would nod, “I wonder if it would be best to induct her to the temple, and have her start apprenticing here.” The thought was fleeting, but it was a point that the old cat had had briefly. “Bah, we aren’t planning on dying anytime soon, let us enjoy this time now.” Her smile would return, and her tail would swish to and fro from beneath her dress. “The future has yet to come, but it seems we might have already chosen our successors,” She would offer a slight smirk to the Leviathan, “whether they like it or not, eh?” The thought of the shy deer magi blushing again at the insinuation would bring a light chuckle to the old magi’s lips. “I wonder how long we can keep it secret.” She didn’t want to scare Ms. Varna off.
Not when there was much life yet to live for the two old cronies walking the marketplace. Althea would stop and stare at the surroundings her, caught up in the joy and the busy-ness of the place. This, this right here was hope, and she wasn’t going to give up on hope just yet. Even if crowds and large amounts of people made her nervous, the free flow of smiles, information, and emotions here was something that would always astound her. It was so different than the camps and Althea wanted to cherish and protect this haven for her people, for her goddess, and for herself most of all. She may have lost her children, but these people, they were her people, no matter what she had to give.
As the conversation continued Althea would shuffle alongside Cherche, hunching just a bit, from nervousness and the general amount of people. It was rare these days she stood to her full height, and in this instance, she was happy to make herself small enough next to her friend. Cherce was someone who was larger than life, and Althea didn’t mind taking the back seat. “I think what you do might be called terrorizing, not so much, keeping on their toes.” The woman would stuff a chuckle down as Cherche laughed. “At the very least old ladies will be able to take naps in the sunshine in peace.” There had been many a time where she had been woken up by her friend, but the statement wasn’t in bitterness, instead, it was full of mirth. “I guess I will only be able to sleep when I’m gone.” She had resigned herself to it, but she smiled still. “Though I do wish we would be born together in the next one as well, I’ve had fun in this one with you.” Maybe her next life wouldn’t be as painful.
