Her small relief from the grip of Kat was short lived as she apparently only wished to readjust herself. Mae’s eyes widened and she looked over to Clarisse with an expression that clearly said “Help. Me. Please.” Of course … that probably wasn’t coming. So, tense as a board and blushing up a storm, Mae tried to focus more on her work. That was a distraction. Comforting. Unfortunately it seemed that being a part of the family meant she was a target of Kat’s familial displays of affection.
That’s definitely all it was.
“I’d wager that if we find one, we’ll find the other,” she said to Clarisse. “I’ll have some trusted people look into this as soon as possible.”
She barely contained a shudder at the Cheshire sister’s little laugh above her head, and pulled away a few inches as the face appeared. She sighed quite audibly when Clarisse saved her. She used that opportunity to stand up, wriggling as subtly as she could manage to free herself from Kat’s embrace.
“No rest for the weary, I’m afraid,” she said to Kat without looking at her. She focused on Clarisse. “Time could be a factor with the shipment. I should get started on it right away.” She sucked in a breath; well, she was going to have to turn around sooner or later. She gave them both a polite nod (not that that would cut it for Kat, but one could pray).
“Good to see you both again. I’ll be in touch. Try not to break your new employee.” She shot a smirk at Clarisse, though the statement was for them both. If Kat treated her like she did Mae… maybe the new girl wasn’t so lucky after all.
