SPIRITS
THE FINAL SPECIES TO BE WARY OF
THE FINAL SPECIES TO BE WARY OF
Definition
Spirit: All living beings that are neither of the Mortal realm nor are they Gods. It is a species all of its own. Aka, "Spirit" is not a synonym for "ghost" or "wandering soul".
Basics
{OOC: this is not a playable race. Spirits are "creatures" that can be randomly rolled by admin or certain mods if your character is posting in certain areas of the world map aka mostly the Outer Lands. If you would like to request a Spirit to be rolled to your character post so in the Help Desk to be accommodated.}
They're invisible to all those living in the mortal realm unless the Spirit wishes to be seen. Wandering souls (Ghosts) however find themselves within the same dimension as Spirits and thus can witness them with ease.
They vary in physical forms. Some are animalistic looking, others are the epitome of nightmarish monsters, others are abstract or astral.
Spirits overall do not care for Mortals for reasons that is explained in the History section. Most don't even really care for Gods. The only deity that some of them have come to appreciate in any light is Arithelia.
Mortals, take a tip and be wary of this species. Due to their usual dislike of your kind they may attempt to cause you physical harm. Just out of sheer wish to cause harm. However, it is worth noting as well that Spirits feed off of souls as one does a delicacy. Ghosts especially need to be wary of this species, but the living should tread cautiously as well.
History
The following is covered lightly as well in the World Immersion Timeline.
This species is shrouded in mystery. Most information has been lost over time and very little hard fact has been notated. Just as Atheism is on the rise, belief in Spirit lore has been a plummeted decline.
Spirits came into existence long before Humanity evolved to its current state. The only (still alive today) deity that showed any interest in their diverse species (and not the ever evolving and interesting Humans) was a Goddess named Arithelia. They loved her and she them.
During the Olden Age Humanity and Spirits lived more or less as peaceful neighbors. Humanity was respectful of nature. Spirits assisted Humanity in the growing and obtaining of food. However, because of the rapid increase of Humanity's population they expanded beyond the land the Spirits had agreed upon.
Peace trickled with tension would exist another 200 years or so, coming to compromises along the way as Humanity continued to expand. However, once man began the cutting down of trees not prior agreed upon, this was where the tension finally snapped. Outraged, Spirits formed to push Humanity back to their own land, sending a very clear message that crossing the boundary line was not acceptable.
Humanity, treating to their wounded, were in turn outraged that Spirits had expressed violence towards them. And thus began the Great War. They started off as smaller skirmishes but eventually led to a striving to wipe out the other. The gods themselves became involved. Magic and spiritualism battled against ingenuity and fertility. Both sides, mortal and immortal, experienced devastating loss.
It would be a horror threatening both sides of this war that would demand it come to an end in order to save the existence of both species. That horror being the mystery that is Olden Magic. At this time of the website's life, details pertaining to Olden Magic will remain purposefully shrouded until certain Site Plot devices are enacted. But, oh, it's coming.
With the war ended Humanity continued to grow in population and striving to reshape the natural world around them. Spirits, especially due to their own decrease in population and slower reproduction cycles, retreated to where the world was still in its original nature. Though they are known to venture occasionally to eat or enact even a small amount of revenge on the species that ran them out of their original homes.
