I refuse to give up. 277 words x music x tags: OPEN Audrey sighed, standing next to the refreshments. She couldn't help it that she didn't know if she couldn't dance. She'd been a Fokradiin orphan for pete's sake. She didn't know how to dance WITH someone she barely knew how to dance. She didn't know if she'd have two left feet as people liked to put it. It wasn't like she'd ever had the time to dance at first the orphanage, then Victor's Military Academy. And yet she looked at the the woman she'd come with and she was happily dancing with a guy in a long coat. Like...when had the girl had TIME? Time to not only learn the dance, but learn how to dance in a ballroom gown?
Audrey just thanked her lucky stars that the dress code for this ballroom had meant she could come in a suit. A dress was not going to be on her agenda if she could help it. She honestly didn't want to have to face peoples' reactions to a cyborg in a dress. Then again, she kept having to remind herself that now people wouldn't be able to tell she was a cyborg right away. She had new synthskin. In any case, she was here, she was somewhat queer, and she was nursing a glass of punch while she watched everyone dancing. She hadn't had anyone ask for a dance yet either, so she supposed she wouldn't have to see whether she could dance, at least for the current moment. She just leaned against the wall watching everyone with smiles on their faces. Apparently ballrooms were a fun place for many. It was Audrey's first experience in one. notes: DYS of GP & WW
I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ Valkorion had arrived at the seat of Ethean power mere moments ago. He was a bit later that what could be considered fashionably late and the guards at the front of the gathering had made him very much aware of the fact by doubting that he was even allowed there. Insulting as the notion had been, Valkorion maintained a politely gentle tone as he unveiled his invitation. The few loyal contacts he still maintained in his father’s company intercepted an invitation for the man to attend, copied and modified it, and sent the copy to insure his entry into the place went without incident. Those loyal few also insured that Aamir would be unable to attend the ball so that the falsehood would be completely undeniable for the night.
A smile crisscrossed his face. His father’s mistake in keeping his rebellion a well-hidden secret was going to cost him greatly soon enough. This would be an opportune time to gather further support for his eventual procurement of what was rightfully his. If he could secure backing from a few dainty nobles, his rise to power would be all but assured. It was an added bonus that he would be able to enjoy himself during the process.
With the rocky start to his evening decisively over, Valkorion proceeded beyond the hired guns meandering around and into the ballroom proper. He smiled again at the opulence on display. Lords and ladies of every culture, businessmen of every stripe, even a few notable celebrities; all were in attendance tonight. The sight reminded him of the many parties that he himself hosted before being forced into exile. He scanned the room, taking special note of any that could be of use. His interest in the faded away when he caught sight of a familiar face, which I immediately made his way towards.
“Hiding yourself away in a corner, are you?” he asked as he came within a respectful distance. “That doesn’t seem very much like you, my little Archangel.”

I refuse to give up. She saw him approach and heard his words. Audrey smiled at the familiar face. He'd worked with her to get rid of those bandits. Skilled with a bow, and with a sharp wit to match the ends of his arrows. She couldn't say she wasn't happy to see him here. She heard the nickname he had for her and she chuckled.
"I thought I didn't qualify for archangel status. And yes I'm standing in the corner. It isn't like it's a loss. The refreshments are really quite good." She might be blunt and honest with this guy, but she wasn't going to readily admit right off the bat that the reason she was being a wallflower was because she wasn't confident in, of all things, her DANCING ability. What kind of awful excuse was that? That was cliche and all kinds of weird. 'I can't dance' was just too simply put. She couldn't help it she hadn't had time to revel in dancing with someone at a ball like these other pompous princesses and princes. Even if they were lesser nobility they all still knew how to dance.
Audrey was not about to admit that she was rather jealous of the way they were able to glide across the ballroom floor. She was quick in combat, but dancing was not something she was confident she'd be able to do. Although someone had said combat was like a dance, Audrey had a feeling that would not apply for the other way around.
"Good to see you again. Nice to see a familiar face, I have to admit." She rubbed the back of her neck and then tightened her blonde ponytail while her hand was back there.

I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ Valkorion allowed himself a smile. “Ah, yes, I do seem to remember saying something along those lines, but I suppose that it is a season for giving and I can allow you to call yourself an angel of any variety that you wish. I also remember admitting how nice it would be to see you in a dress.” He took a moment to appreciate the woman before him. “Not that your beauty is lessened in the least by your current attire. In fact, I quite enjoy seeing you dressed as you are.”
He continued walking until he stood beside Audrey, then turned on his heel to join her observation of the dancers as they spun gently around like slow-moving tops. Some of them were decent enough in the art, but he was sure that he could out do them if given half the chance; the downloads on various forms of formal dance would all but insure that. He lacked for a partner for the moment, but that could easily change if he was so inclined. The woman next to him would be a rather interesting match.
“And I disagree with your assessment,” he continued. “I believe that you would be quite a sight dancing. Beauty and grace seem to come naturally enough to you, so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch for you to showcase those traits. You might actually turn some heads." Valkorion shrugged. “Though I suppose that a flower is lovely no matter where it chooses to bloom.”

I refuse to give up. Ah yes he had said something about her in a dress, Audrey recalled.
"Well I never did feel at home in a dress with my bionics. And my synthskin is new yet. I'm not used to looking like everyone expects quite yet." She smiled slightly, touching her forearms. They looked human now. She'd had bionics since she was twelve. It felt odd to look like she did now. He spoke about how she also looked good in the suit and it teased a grin out of her. Ever the charmer, he was. Regardless of what she wore, he was certainly consistent. Beauty though? Audrey's cheeks coloured with a slight blush at the words. She knew he was just turning on the charm, but she was rather unaccustomed to it. He stood beside her, seemingly watching the dancers just as she herself was. Then he spoke again, basically saying that she could do it, in a rather poetic way. She chuckled.
"I'm not so sure you're right. I haven't danced before. I don't know how." She'd been reluctant to admit it before, but he did have a tendency to put her at ease. It was sort of an odd feeling, that. Feeling at ease wasn't exactly something Audrey was used to.
"My teens were focused on surviving, and learning to fight. None of the aristocratic dancing that so many people here seem to have undergone. Although I do appreciate the vote of confidence." She did wonder something though. With such a long name, perhaps he shared some traits with the people here.
"Have you ever danced before?" It was honestly just blunt curiosity that made her ask. She didn't know if he was nobility or not, but perhaps he had danced. notes: DYS of GP & WW
I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ Valkorion looked down at the synthetic skin now covering the woman’s hands. “Ah yes, I noticed that you’d added a little something to yourself. It’s lovely, if you don’t mind my saying.” Not that it would have mattered if it did for he would’ve said it regardless, especially if it would earn him such an endearing reaction. He favored her with a cock-sided grin when he noticed the rosy color her face gained. Teasing the woman would not grow old in the near future.
“Hmm, strange to think of someone with such graceful skill with a blade wouldn’t know how to dance. In all honesty, dancing is no more different than fighting in a way. Two partners intertwined, each responding to the other’s swaying and twirling.” He paused to laugh. “Of course, this particular instance usually just ends with a stubbed toe rather than relief from the weight of one’s head.”
He offered her another smile. “Think nothing of it, my dear Audrey. I don’t know what you were subjected to as a child, but it seems to have shaped you into the woman you are today. That is, if nothing else, something positive about it. You’re so much more interesting than many of the guests in attendance tonight.” He returned briefly to his watch shortly before Audrey asked him if he could dance.
“Of course I can dance, my dear Audrey,” Valkorion boasted. “It’s something of a necessity when it comes to my upbringing.” An interesting thought struck him in that moment. He waited until the small orchestra’s tune faded away then took one of Audrey’s hands in his one of his own and bent at the waist.
“May I have this dance, my lady?” He followed the question with a flirtatious wink.

I refuse to give up. She heard his words about the synthetic skin and she smiled warmly.
"Thanks. It'll take some getting used to, not having people stare at my arms. I had grown used to it." She heard him say how dancing and fighting were similar and she sighed. He did make a point at the end about how the only consequences of a lack of grace in this case was a stubbed toe and Audrey smiled.
"I've heard that said, but I don't quite believe it. I try to have grace on the battlefield to avoid injury and for stealth purposes." But she didn't really count cramps as injuries persay. It wasn't like threat of death from a stabbing or whatever. So he found her more interesting than the other guests. Well, at least Audrey had that going for her, she supposed. She thought it was a rather sad commentary on the world they lived in that he didn't question her mentioning survival. He mentioned knowing to dance was a part of his upbringing and mentally applauded herself for guessing correctly. Truly, it had been a lucky guess taken as a result of observing the charm and smugness Valkorion seemed to possess in conversation. Then Audrey got a bit of a shock, despite it being a natural progression of the conversation. He was asking her to dance? Hadn't she just told him she didn't know how? Although she supposed considering his nature he probably wouldn't care whether he was part of a spectacle if she couldn't dance and failed miserably at it. A bow with her hand in his. Once again, he was pouring on the charm. And boy, did it work. Audrey's cheeks flushed slightly with a mix of embarrassment and surprise. She smiled.
"Of course. Although I cannot guarantee the safety of your feet from my own." notes: sorry for the wait DYS of GP & WW
I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ “I suppose it will help when other begin staring at other things,” Valkorion cooed. “Things such as that lovely face of yours.” A face that was suddenly colored the brightest shade of red. It was unbelievable endearing and brought another half grin to his face, and her next comment was cause enough for him chuckle softly.
“My dear, if I allowed myself to worry about such minor things, I wouldn’t be as able to enjoy life as fully as I do. The risk of a stubbed toe or two is nothing compared to the joy of having you share a dance with me.” Despite his words, Valkorion dialed back the pain sensors in his feet enough that any misfortunate encounters with the bottoms of Audrey’s feet wouldn’t be as… distressing. Better still, he would be able to correct any mistakes that the blonde made; perhaps he could even convince her to dance with him again. The thought was a pleasant one that he saved to his archives. Valkorion rose and gently led the fair warrior maiden by her hand to one of the clearer spots on the dance floor. There he switched the grip of his hand on Audrey’s while his free hand guided hers up to his shoulder.
“Pardon me,” he said, smiling coyly. His other hand came to a rest on the small of Audrey’s back. “If you find this disagreeable, I will shift my hand elsewhere. However, I will say that this is the proper positioning of one’s hand for a dance.” With that, Valkorion—no, he was Afzal tonight—would make any necessary adjustments. Then, he would begin leading Audrey in a simple dance that he felt would be easy enough for the woman to follow.

I refuse to give up. Lovely face? Audrey's face was already flushed, and she resisted ducking her head a bit shyly. She wasn't used to compliments, and that also meant she wasn't used to accepting them. He mentioned joy of a dance with her and instead of the blush her face just kind of looked at him with a sweet, genuine smile. Something about that comment just kind of made her smile. She gave a little chuckle.
"Well hopefully I don't step on your feet too much. Wouldn't want you to have to rethink that sweet sentiment." She did give him points for the fact that despite all the compliments Audrey found herself way less nervous around him than she normally would be at a big fancy party like this one. Not that she had anything to compare it to, of course. But it's just what she figured, and Audrey thought her estimation was probably in line. He guided her to the dancefloor and she just followed. When he guided her hand to his shoulder, she just kind of went with the flow. Valkorion seemed to know what he was doing, or at least much better than herself. She wasn't about to argue about technique. He pardoned himself for where his hand was and she shook her head slightly. An almost imperceptible motion, but one that accenuated her point nonetheless.
"Your hand is fine there but I appreciate the care. I do know this much about dance, I suppose." She wasn't sure if she was supposed to look at him, or her feet. And Audrey surely had no idea which was the more helpful option. She glanced at her feet, and then at him, trying to make up her mind. She'd been taught to look at someone while you spoke with them, but she also didn't want to crush his feet. She thanked her lucky stars and fate itself that she had cyborg arms, and not cyborg feet. She didn't suppose bionic feet would be....well, light. Although she really didn't know. Well that musing was besides the point. Surprisingly while she had been thinking she had seemed to be dancing okay. Of course she had a few clumsy steps once she was thinking about her dancing exclusively. Darn it. Apparently going with the flow was the trick...but how did she do that when she was definitely not used to just going with the flow?

I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ “My dear, I’m not one to retract something that I’ve said without good reason,” Afzal said. He smiled when Audrey allowed his hand to remain where it was. He settled into a steady gait as he led the woman in his arms. She was doing surprisingly well considering that she’d never danced a day in her life. He was about to compliment here skill when she began looking between himself and her feet. It was then that she started making mistakes. It wouldn’t be long before she stepped on his feet. Knowing that, Afzal led Audrey away from the main flow of the dance; there he stopped and looked rather pointedly at his dance partner.
“You’re thinking too much, my dear, and you were doing rather well when you weren’t.” He smiled impishly. “Perhaps I should give you something else to consider while we dance, hmm?” The question was what would he do? There were a number of ideas of course but none that immediately stuck. He idly massaged Audrey’s hands as he devoted more processing power to his decision. When he finally stumbled upon a solution that appealed to him, Afzal smiled again.
“Here’s an idea.” Afzal’s hand began gliding up Audrey’s back until it came to the nape of her neck. He winked before pulling her as close as he could manage. Then, he eased forward until his lips were pressed lightly against those of the woman in his arms. He wasn’t forceful in his approach; Audrey would be able to pull away if she wished. If she didn’t, Afzal would hold the position for several seconds before finally pulling away to look the woman in the eye and gage her reaction.

I refuse to give up. She heard him speak about how what he said wasn't so easily retracted and part of her seemed to relax. If someone said they weren't likely to take it back, then she believed them. It was a very nice thing to be able to believe, and she didn't quite realize that. He then started guiding them out of the...fray. Well what would be the fray if they were fighting not dancing. Valkorion spoke about how she'd been doing well until she began overthinking it. She knew that, and yet even thinking about her overthinking was technically her overthinking things. It was a vicious circle that Audrey was pretty powerless to. Then he really DID give her something new to consider. Audrey took in the feeling of his hand moving upwards and wondered what he was doing. Then he kissed her gently. Her eyes widened in surprise, but she didn't pull away.
It was a new sensation, but most definitely not an unpleasant one. Quite the opposite. How...who...her mind was having a bit of trouble 'considering it' as it were. She didn't pull away, didn't kiss back. Audrey was busy processing her shock. Besides, it wasn't like she would know how to kiss back. This, here, would technically be her first kiss. Unusual perhaps that she was in her twenties. But her times training how to fight had hardly been time to date or fall in love, when you thought about it. He pulled away after some seconds, and she just blinked rather rapidly looking at him with her green eyes. Her mouth opened to speak, but she had nothing to say. A peculiar feeling for the woman who was generally so 'together' and prided herself on being ready for any situation. This was perhaps the first situation she had not been prepared for.
"I...okay. That..." She sighed at her inability to form words, taking a deep breath.
"That certainly was something." Something to think about. Something to consider. Something good. Not something bad, she admitted to herself. She was a duck out of water, in her suit and mercenary-like behaviour, Audrey didn't kid herself about that. And yet she'd just been kissed. The man before her mystified her at the moment. She realized she was probably overthinking things again, but hell she was entitled to right?
In the meantime, the move had done exactly what Valkorion had intended. She was overthinking something else instead of her dancing. She was dancing smoothly again. And hell, she was even looking at his face instead of her own feet. A success really. notes: Sorry for the wait. DYS of GP & WW
I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ Afzal smiled his trademark charming smile at Audrey. That fluttering of her eyes, the way that her mouth opened and closed without making a single sound, the way she gazed up at him with that shocked, mystified, green-eyed expression; Afzal adored her more than he ever had in that moment. One would have thought that the woman had never been kissed with that endearing reaction, not to mention the fact that she’d barely even reacted to having a gentleman thief steal her lips. “It certainly was, wasn’t it?” His hand slid back down to its proper positioning and pulled his partner gently. He stepped once again and Audrey seemed to step with him, reading his movements as easily as she would have had they been locked in an altogether different sort of dance.
“Excellent,” he told Audrey as they twirled to the gentle tune. “See? No different than wielding a blade in battle.” He punctuated the statement with a spin that coincided perfectly with a rise in tone from the orchestra. The absolutely delectable heat rising from Audrey was setting his circuitry alight with pure delight. How interesting it was to have found someone that could incite such a reaction within him. Not since his almost daily visits to his darling Sierra had his emotions been stimulated in such a way. It was an experience that he missed dearly. The need to make Audrey his and his alone came to the forefront of his mind, stronger than ever before. He was possessed by the idea of taking her away for a private discussion. Something much more… exciting.
Even with his processors seizing upon the idea, Afzal never missed a step in the dance. His feet carried him as surely as if he were paying attention to his actions and his eyes never left Audrey’s. As the music began to fade and the dance along with it, Afzal dipped his partner into an amorous sweep that wouldn’t have been the slightest bit odd as the cover for some romance novel or another. His hand went gliding up Audrey’s side, playfully caressing the side of the bump on her chest before finally coming to a rest on her cheek. He planted another kiss on the blonde’s lips, then he pulled her back to her feet and released her, bowing as he did so.
“I thank you for the dance, my dear.” He returned to being Valkorion as he rose and gave that half-cocked smirk of his. NOTES: Is he charming enough? ☼ TAGS: Audrey

I refuse to give up. It felt like her stomach was doing flips and a choreographed gymnastics routine besides. Was that normal? Audrey really didn't know, but she knew dwelling on it wouldn't help anything. His hand returned to their original position and then he spoke about how it was just like wielding a blade. Audrey chuckled.
"Not quite, but I do see the similarities now." Funny. She could speak now, and she was actually more relaxed about her dancing. Her mind was still reeling from what had transpired, but she was dancing okay now. That was good, for sure. He spun her to the beat of the music, his grey eyes still meeting her own eyes. That's when she started thinking about what he was like. Yes, they'd traded quips while fighting bandits, but other than that and his name she didn't really know that much about him. What kind of person he was, for example. It normally wouldn't really have mattered since Audrey prided herself on being a good judge of character. But, well, he DID kiss her. And that in itself sort of fascinated her. Why had that even occurred to him? Yes, he seemed the charming sort, but Audrey wasn't exactly a girly girl. Being kissed honestly hadn't really crossed her mind very much in her life, so she supposed it was okay that she was dwelling on it a little bit.
He dipped her in the classic dance move, his hand moving upwards and grazing her chest briefly. She was about to glare at him when he kissed her again briefly. Audrey flushed a bright red as he brought her back up to standing position, releasing her with a bow. She recovered more quickly this time, and just shot him a gentle sort of smirk. He was a rascal, so she supposed that answered the earlier question of 'why'. He smirked right back at her after thanking her for the dance and Audrey found herself raising an eyebrow briefly and oh so slightly.
"The pleasure was mine." Damn that dance had passed quickly. Then an idea occurred to her. Audrey moved closer, going to shake his hand but instead of it being a full blown handshake, she put a piece of paper in his hand.
"That number'll get you through. Gotta keep in touch with the guy who has a mind as sharp and witty as my own." It was a business card, but she was an odd jobs mercenary so the number was her own personal number anyway. She'd kept one on hand in case she met a business contact, but she was thankful she'd brought it in any case. notes: Oh you think? XD DYS of GP & WW
I'M TAKING BACK THE CROWN, I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NAKED I SEE WHAT'S MINE AND TAKE IT ☼ And there it was, that lovely shade of red; how attractive it made her, how desirable. It was almost a shame that she managed to recover so quickly this time. Even so, Valkorion gladly took the hand that was offered to him, flashing a sly grin when he felt the slip of paper. “Is a business request or a more… personal one.” Either or would be acceptable but he had to admit that the idea of more intimate relationship with the woman would be the more agreeable of the two. Perhaps not getting her into bed per say—though he certainly didn’t delete the image outright—but at least something more akin to a relationship at the very least.
That would be… interesting.
“Whatever the case, I believe that we’ll be in touch.” He was purposefully vague with his wording to remain the ever-elusive rogue he was. It was a game that he was likely to never tire of, but there was no shame in allowing a few things to slip. If anything, it would make the game more interesting and would keep her questing for more.
As part of the game, Valkorion pulled Audrey’s hand up to his lips and kissed her lightly on the fingertips. It had been made a fantastic evening dancing with the blonde and it showed in the way his eyes practically shone with delight. He pulled close enough to Audrey to whisper in her ear, close enough that his simulated breath would brush playfully against her ear. “I look forward to our next meeting.” The android swaggered way with his hands linked behind his back and a smile on his lips.
