[PTab=PERSONALITY]
Which side of Nobu people see is largely dependent on his impressions of them. Those he views favorably meet the charming, clever water magi, with a penchant for relentless teasing and a knack for winning others over with his honeyed words. Those he calls enemy-- or whom he simply dislikes-- often face the wrath of the siren or, at the very least, the sharper end of his tongue, which he will gleefully employ to rip someone apart, if he's not using his magic to do so instead. As lax and lazy as he often appears, he is as volatile and violent as they come, and can be quite sadistic when he wants to be.
Calm and self-assured in an almost predatorial way, Nobu spends much of his time watching. Watching others, watching his surroundings, watching the happenings that involve both… He’s gotten quite good at it, too, and is able to pick up quite a few details that more casual observers might miss. Not that he often lets on about it, of course. It’d be no fun showing his full hand all the time, now would it? And the man is ever so fond of his games.
That said, it should come as little surprise that he does not often allow others to come very close. More often than not, unless for some reason they particularly pique his interest or affection, Nobu keeps people at arm’s length. It’s… easier, that way. Safer, too. Besides, once they get to the part about how he can and will viciously murder people, they tend to head for the hills anyway. And, if that doesn't do the trick, there's also the sheer lack of shame that might instead. The reactions he gets from lewd behavior (intentional or otherwise) are simply far too amusing to resist.
He’s not a madman, of course— or at least not the stark raving kind. He is, however, very much a predator, and with this trait comes a general lack of hesitation toward killing when he needs or wants to, and a certain joy in making it as painful as possible (he especially enjoys drownings) when the person or persons happen to have particularly angered him. Nobu tends not to lose sleep over the death of an enemy by his hands, nor over what people might think of him for it. He knows who he is, and has accepted it.
On the other side of things, toward those few he calls friend Nobu is unshakably loyal, for these are the people who have earned it. He will do whatever he can to help and protect them, no matter what means he may have to take to ensure his ability to do so, but this feature comes as something of a double-edged blade. The water magi does not suffer betrayals lightly, and under the right circumstances can harbor a grudge eternally. He does not forgive, and he most certainly does not forget. Not easily, and not ever entirely. To do so, he believes, is rather foolish and naive.
However, for all his airs and acts, there are some things that Nobu remains unadjusted to. His upbringing as a member of a less "civilized" magi clan brought with it a number of more feral and base tendencies that he hasn't been able to shake, and which those unused to him might find strange. They're usually small things, like the way he tends to bristle to make himself appear bigger before an enemy, or a lack of understanding as to why certain concepts and ideas exist, but noticeable nonetheless. Most common among these idiosyncrasies is an offhanded mixup of terms-- for example, "mate" instead of "spouse"-- or a slight blunder when delivering expressions and sayings. Fortunately for those he interacts with, he doesn't seem to mind much when corrected, unless in an especially rude or condescending manner.

[PTab=APPEARANCE]
Nobu is a striking figure, if nothing else, and quite clearly anything but human. His hair is long and silvery, and nothing short of wild in style, as he has a certain distaste toward "proper" grooming. As long as it remains relatively clean and untangled (which are about the only things he cares to maintain), he cares little for how long or messy his hair grows to be otherwise, and claims to prefer being shocked over getting his hair trimmed and styled, whenever the subject is brought up. He likes it just the way it is, thank you. Presently, it falls to a point just past his waist.
Oddly, his eyebrows do not sport the same silvery color, and are instead a deep red. The eyes beneath them, angular and somewhat narrow, share the clear blue of the open ocean-- a trait he is rather proud of-- and are framed by long, thick lashes. Handsome in a sharply angled way, his face is largely unmarked by scars, although the same cannot be said for the rest of his body, which is littered with a good number, of varying size and shape. In complexion, he is somewhat pale, but not without healthy color, and in height, he stands at a little over six feet, with a build that can only be described as svelte. However, these remain the more mundane of his physical features.
Shimmering blue, fish-like scales are almost as skin, and cover his body in patchy swathes across his torso and limbs. Rather than the standard, rounded ears, Nobu's somewhat resemble fins, in that the cartilage is shaped more to resemble spines with webbing in between. These too are lined with scales, particularly along the spines and backs. Additionally, aside from that on his head, Nobu is entirely free of bodily hair. Oddly, even what hair he does have does not appear to weigh him down much, even while swimming. In fact, it retains water-repellant properties similar to those found in the feathers of water fowl-- the second he returns to the surface, water beads and rolls off with ease. Usually, all he needs to be completely dry is a few good shakes of his head.
Along the center of his back, more spines can be found, although these are distinctly reminiscent of those belonging to lionfish, including in their blue-and-white stripped patterning. On either side of these spines, just beneath his shoulder blades, a pair of large lionfish fins sprout out like wings, with similar color and patterning to the spines. When folded, their length stops a little past his mid-calf, and when spread their span is just shy of eight feet. On his forearms, smaller fins can be found, also equipped with barbs, and between his fingers and toes spans a thin, flexible webbing that assists Nobu in swimming. Additionally, his neck sports a set of gills, which enable him to breathe while under water.
In all honesty, Nobu rather dislikes clothing in general. Really, the only reason he wears any at all is because people would start screaming about "public indecency" otherwise. That said, he prefers lightweight, loose clothing while on land and out and about, and none at all when in the water or the privacy of his home. Exceptions tend to be rare. If he can get away with it, he will often keep his attire limited to a baggy pair of pants, and a sash around his waist to keep them up, although if he must cover his upper body, he also owns a few specially-cut open vests that allow for his spines and fins to remain unrestricted. With this in mind, it should come as little surprise that he is almost always barefoot, as well-- shoes tend to bunch up the webbing between his toes in an uncomfortable manner. In general, he prefers darker colors, especially blues, and does not accessorize much save for a couple specific articles he is almost never without. The first is a double-stranded, red necklace, and an intricately-carved golden arm band-- both relics of his past which he often refuses to speak about, unless under very special circumstances (or drunk enough not to care).

Nobu's origins are about as wild as his behavior, if not more so. Born to a small clan of water magi, he spent his formative years, and many more afterward, in the northern waters of Kakishima, on the western side of Ikigai. The group was of a more feral persuasion, as it were-- they lived in and off the ocean, functioned under a sort of pack mentality, and guarded their territory jealously. Once, he was told, they preferred not to interact with the outside world at all, and would go so far as to attack any outsiders who dared wander too close. However, times had long since changed by the time Nobu came to be. Though they remained close to their ancestral waters, the "alpha" and "betas" of the group worked to maintain a good relationship with the local islanders, especially in business, as at the time they were among the area's most successful fishers.
As the second child to the current leader, Nobu was expected to help maintain this prosperity, although it was his elder sister who was expected to become the next head, as all main leadership roles were held by females of the shoal. This didn't particularly bother him, though, nor did it bother anyone else, save for the occasional outsider who didn't quite understand-- such was the way of the clan.
In his younger years, life was good. Though the shoal's numbers had dwindled over the decades, there were still plenty of other children around his age to swim and play with, including his siblings and a few extended family members. As he grew older, his elders began teaching him the group's trade-- how to make nets, hooks, and spears, proper methods for catching and cleaning, everything he needed-- in addition to how to nurture and use his magic. He began proper work at the age of sixteen, and as he grew older, courted and won over his first mate-- a eel-aspect magi by the name of Akira. Times were simpler, then.
They did not remain so, much to his regret. About thirty years ago, a series of harsh storms and unusually warm weather shook the reefs Nobu and his shoal mates called home. What corals survived the storms largely bleached under the too-warm waters, unable to survive outside of their usual conditions. With them, the local fish population began to dwindle, as did the clan's means of survival. Business with the islanders was impossible when they could hardly feed themselves on what was left. So, with great reluctance, it was decided that the shoal should seek more plentiful waters, until such a time as they could return home.
The search for new territory was a long and often arduous one, and lasted for several months. They traveled far and wide as they sought suitable waters, and eventually their journey took them to the western coast of Ethea. This was to be their greatest mistake. Though initially unaware of this fact, the Magi Relocation Camps were in full effect at the time, and it did not take long for the local Hunters to become aware of this newly-arrived group of magi. The shoal was attacked within days of its initial arrival.
The battle was long and violent, and both sides suffered a good number of casualties. Among the dead were several of Nobu's relatives, and Akira. Of those who survived, those who could not or would not flee (including Nobu) were captured in varying states of injury and shipped off to the relocation camps. Nearly all were separated, presumably to keep them from gathering and rallying one another to fight again. He has not been aware of the others' whereabouts since, though he hopes those who fled found safer waters, well away from Ethea and it's ruthless Hunters.
Many of the following years, Nobu spent seething. His camp was far from the kindest to his kind, and after all that had been done to him and his shoal at the hands of those filthy humans, he would have liked nothing more than to kill every last one of them. But to try would only end in his own failure and death, so he watched and waited, seeking an opportunity to finally act. Over two decades passed while he did, full of pain, and sickness, and hatred. At times, when the guards got too cruel, he stepped in to aid one of his fellows. At others, when heroism was unwise, he sat back and watched while another magi was ridiculed, or beaten, or starved. A few times, Nobu came very, very close to losing his patience, but he held on, always the watcher.
Then, eight years ago, the breakouts began, and Nobu found his opportunity at last. He fought hard with his fellow prisoners of the camp, taking great pleasure in picking off each and every guard who dared cross his path. The end result was nothing short of a slaughter, and in the months of genocide that followed, Nobu hardly slowed down. Every "brave, glorious" Hunter he crossed met a grisly end when he could manage it, though if he had to run to survive, he wasn't much bothered. If it meant he could survive another day so he could continue to reap his vengeance, he made do.
But then the genocides stopped, and so too did Nobu, to a degree. He had to be careful, now that its end had been declared, and "peace" restored. For a couple years afterward, he did his best to disappear, taking refuge in deep lakes, and wide rivers, and other wild places until he had been largely forgotten by those who might still wish to do him harm personally. From there he wandered, surviving alone for a time in the Outlands and small villages dotted across the country. He preferred to avoid the cities when he could, although eventually he began to visit Dagos from time to time. Where he was not welcome, he did not stay, nor did he strike out at others without necessity or otherwise a means of getting away with it. Prudence took precedence over bloodlust.
Around five years ago, through some friend of a friend of an acquaintance, the water magi came to learn about a haven of sorts for his kind, hidden somewhere in the Arecia Woods. The prospect was intriguing, if nothing else. Though he had considered attempting to seek out his family, a lack of a place to start, and a certain feeling that he no longer belonged with them after everything he had seen and done, kept him from it. However, wandering aimlessly proved tiring, after a while, and eventually he decided to seek out this so-called Haven as a potential place to settle.
A few months later, after a good bit of carefully asking around, he was able to find the place, and traveled there with a small band of other refugees seeking safety. He inserted himself into the community almost immediately upon arrival, using his cultivated wit to win over those he found interesting or helpful-- although of course he has his enemies and rivals, too. Presently, he supports himself by fishing, as he once did off the shores of Kakishima, and assisting the local farmers with their crops. When the urge strikes, he travels elsewhere, and often enjoys causing trouble for the Hunters and humans unfortunate enough to cross his path, although he is careful not to stir things up too publicly, if for nothing else than to keep a bounty from his head. Recently, he has begun taking an interest in the activities of the Magi Liberation Movement, too, though he has yet to officially join their ranks.

[PTab=SKILLS]
Water I: This allows Nobu to manipulate fifty gallons worth of water that is already clearly in existence to the naked eye. He cannot change its temperature. Nor can he produce a projectile yet.
Materialize: Nobu can form water in an area where there, to the naked eye, was once none. At this level he can collect from the water molecules in the air, clouds, plants and bodily fluids from corpses of animals or people.
Unarmed Combat I: Nobu knows the basics and can hold his own in a street fight. (Tai chi.)
Water Walking: Nobu can decide whether or not he sinks.
Aqua Surfer: (Upgrade to Water Walking) Nobu can now move water (or ice if purchased) forcefully behind his feet to speed himself across the water's surface, allowing him to cross massive lakes in a matter of seconds for high speed water battles, or skate along paths of ice for air combat.
Water II: (Upgrade of Water I) Nobu can now manipulate five hundred gallons worth of water.
Water III: (Upgrade of Water II) Nobu can now manipulate five thousand gallons worth of water at one time. Any watery projectiles are at their fastest and most efficient.
Bubbles I: Nobu can create hardier bubbles that do not burst the same way non-magical fragile bubbles do. He can have up to 30 of these at one time and have them stay within a certain vicinity. If, say, a hunter were to bump into one or brush against one, it would create a small explosion. Enough to take off a limb? No. But enough to create a nasty looking scar and pain.
Bubbles II: Nobu is capable of creating big enough bubbles to actually encompass a person or thing for temporary defensive purposes. It acts as almost a rubbery defensive sphere, causing kicking feet, knives, even bullets if the magi is talented enough to bounce right off of it.
Levitation: This is not necessarily "flight". By far the slowest form of midair travel in comparison to the other races the action is more of a hover.
Fog: Nobu is capable of producing fog at a quick rate. Because this is a continuous process he will be winded after this.
Heavy Fog: (Upgrade of Fog) The fog Nobu creates isn’t just obscuring; it’s literally heavy. Anyone except water magi will feel heavy resistance when inside of it. This does not effect breathing.
Boil: Nobu is able to adjust the water’s temperature to heat rather than cool. At this level, he can boil the same amount of water that he can control with Water I, and must be touching the water.
Boil II: (Upgrade of Boil) Nobu may now boil water up to his Water level. He can be up to a few meters from the source, and the boiling water he creates will no longer scald or burn him (This does not affect water that was boiling before his influence).
Unarmed Combat II: Nobu has improved in this skill and can accomplish more impressive feats in Tai Chi. He is now better able to defend himself against melee attacks.
Unarmed Combat III: Nobu is extremely talented in unarmed combat within the field he has chosen to study in (tai chi). Not only is he better able to defend himself against melee attacks, but he also has a high chance of getting his opponent to drop their weapon if given the opportunity. (The fumble concept applies to firearms as well.)

Recently, he has begun taking an interest in the activities of the Magi Liberation Movement, too, though he has yet to officially join their ranks.

thrashing the covers off, it has me by its teeth
Default Skills
Water I: This allows Nobu to manipulate fifty gallons worth of water that is already clearly in existence to the naked eye. He cannot change its temperature. Nor can he produce a projectile yet.
Materialize: Nobu can form water in an area where there, to the naked eye, was once none. At this level he can collect from the water molecules in the air, clouds, plants and bodily fluids from corpses of animals or people.
Unarmed Combat I: Nobu knows the basics and can hold his own in a street fight. (Tai chi.)
Purchased abilities
Purchased weaponry levels
Unarmed Combat II: Nobu has improved in this skill and can accomplish more impressive feats in Tai Chi. He is now better able to defend himself against melee attacks.
Unarmed Combat III: Nobu is extremely talented in unarmed combat within the field he has chosen to study in (tai chi). Not only is he better able to defend himself against melee attacks, but he also has a high chance of getting his opponent to drop their weapon if given the opportunity. (The fumble concept applies to firearms as well.)
