[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] FIRST LESSONS The park was vibrant and sunny; the playground full of children, mostly human, people walking along the paths, playing with their pets in the grass, or simply relaxing on the benches, enjoying the weekend afternoon. Vendors for snacks, drinks, and ice cream did good business in their quaint little stands. It was a good temperature; warm enough to encourage people to come out, but not so warm that she would look out of place wearing a hoodie. It was one of the few nicer parks in Dagos, inside the Esfuerzo Hills neighborhood. Vistoso Springs was too gated for Fey; a magi would stick out like a sore thumb. But the moderately mixed neighborhood was perfect for a little shadowing session. She had left a day for Fey to relax and acclimate herself to her new home, but insisted she come with her for a small lesson in information gathering. She walked lazily alongside the magi, following the quaint stone path through the middle of the park. She explained it was important to look casual; it would be second nature to Fey, once she got any “secret-spy” fantasies out of her head, if she did have any of those thoughts. Maybe it was nerves. She engaged her in small talk and laughter, both to keep up the illusion that they were just visitors to the park, perhaps friends, and because she was curious about Fey; how was her night in the safehouse? Is she doing okay? How long had she been slumming in Dagos? What does she do for fun? Maevia had distractions of her own; she caught herself examining the shorter woman often, replaying her encounter with Kupiec and what he had told her over and over in her head. “It really is easy,” she said. “Eventually you won’t even have to think about it.”She scanned the park as they walked. It was a reflex to her, and her mind was excellent at documenting and sorting details. Her gaze was drawn to two men sitting on a bench, a few dozen yards up the path. She nodded at them. “Those men are more than they look,” she said. Her voice was firm but friendly, like a teacher trying to encourage a student, eager to see the wheels turn in their head. “Not unlike us. They’re good, but they have a few tells. What are they? Who do you think they might be? And don’t stare too long; look around the park, drag your gaze over them and pick up details. If they catch you staring, they might spook.”
Maevia smiled, interested to hear what Fey would notice. She knew the two men were undercover detectives; had she not had prior knowledge, she could have assumed so by the obvious clues. They were constantly looking around, subtly, perhaps, but they had a strong sense of their surroundings. Secondly, you could see a part of a gun holster sticking out from under one of the jackets; civilians couldn’t carry so openly. Third, they remained an odd distance apart from each other, and faced slightly away; this was not the posture of two friends or brothers. They weren’t committing fully to the act; perhaps tired or complacent. They had no kids, no dogs, no newspaper or phones; it looked like a meeting, it just had that feeling about it. There were other hints that indicated they weren’t just meeting for fun, and she wanted to test how much she could pick up on. The dream of the future you see, dissolves...
Feys eye flicked around the park with a big of excitement as the pair entered the area. While she knew her way around the city well enough there were many places she had not dared to venture in the past, and this was one of them. She would have surely looked a vagrant if she came to this place but a few days ago. Now, however, she at least looked somewhat presentable after a shower and purchasing a new dress, despite still wearing the same dingy old scarf she had for ages. For this meeting she chose to leave behind the jacket she would have normally worn, wearing a hood under the hot sun in a park would have been too conspicuous. She was a bit uncomfortable having her horns exposed, but the place seemed calm enough. Not the sort of place a hunter or some bigoted idiot would be looking for a notch in the belt. [break][break] Still, it was worth coming out. After a day of resting she was glad to hear from her new employer, she wouldn't have been sure where to begin without this sort of job without some starter pointers she would have to admit. Aside from that, the walk was nice simply to go on. The bit of nature was a refreshing change from the slums. Well, anything was a nice change from the slums for the girl if you got right down to it. It helped Fey enjoy the big of small talk they made as they strolled around. She couldn't complain about her nights rest in the safehouse, a simple bed and walls did a lot to ease the nerves. She felt better than she had in a long time. Maybe even for years, really. She'd been in the slums since she was a kid, not much time for fun. Still, she didn't let it get her down and responded in turn with a smile. [break][break] “I hope so. Thanks for taking me out, too. I started thinking about it and... I wasn't really sure where to begin...” Fey replied sheepishly, ruffling her own hair a bit. She made sure to follow Maevia's gaze carefully, trying to take note of whatever she took note of. Fey was certain she would not catch everything Maevia caught, but anything she could take note of would help her pick out what to look for. [break][break] The girl's eye narrowed on a pair of men at a bench for a moment, letting her eye flick away and relax moments later as she was instructed. She looked back to Maevia with a nod, letting her gaze wander back over the figures. She tried to make like she was simply looking around, turning her eye to the sky and shielding them from the sun, looking off down a path, wandering back over the pair, back to Maevia. In her glances she noticed their posture seemed off compared to others sitting around other benches. And a small quirk peeking out from behind a jacket. The girl gave an idle hum as she thought for a moment before speaking up. “I think one of them is armed... a drug deal...?” Fey gave a first guess and paused to look back at the pair, her mind following off on a tangent. “...or maybe cops.” She added on to the end, crossing her arms with a light grumble. She wasn't quite sure, it it was the slums she would have been sure the sort of figure would be a drug dealer, but here not quite so much.

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] FAST LESSONS She nodded along with the small talk. Not much time for fun, hm. She would comment that it was much the same for her; always busy, always working, rarely sleeping. Even since she was young, this had been her work. Still, it was always nice to find time for puzzle or two, she'd say, and that Fey might have more free time now without having to worry about basic things like shelter. She kept to herself that this little 'training' session and their earlier 'meeting' were actually like breaks to her. Going out was not something she enjoyed, and she exhaled sharply at a lingering annoyance; every recent important discovery had taken her to the woods. Well, it couldn't be helped. Maybe she'd even be able to trust Fey enough to do those errands for her. Maevia nodded with a low laugh. Not bad, but she needed to be more confident. “You're thinking on the right trail. Even in a nice place like this, it could be either. Sometimes plain sight is the best cover. Follow my lead.”As they neared the pair, Maevia burst out in laughter and pat Fey on the shoulder. “Oh my god, I know! I can't believe she did that! Ugh, seriously, where are people's manners these days?” She led Fey around the men as she continued on in the fake conversation. They regarded them with quick, suspicious glances, but didn't pay them mind behind that. “Hold on, I gotta sit down, she sent me something,” she would say, and lead Fey to sit down on the behind behind the men. She pulled out a phone of her own, and brought up some fake emails on the holo-display. “Look busy,” she whispered to Fey. The noise of the park did an excellent job of covered up her voice. She gave a subtle head nod to the men behind them. “Keep talking, but now listen without looking.”Maevia would switch between e-mails and little puzzle games on her phone, while trying to engage Fey in some occasional exchanges of words; not full conversation, but the way two friends talked while distracted by the rest of their life. It was important to teach Fey how to listen while doing anything else; if you could do that, you could fit in anywhere, and nobody would think twice about it. Granted, she didn't have many Magi taking roles like this, given they stuck out a bit, but there were plenty of ways the unfortunate perception of magi could be twisted into her favor. She was able to listen fully between what they were saying, glad they didn't spook them. Their voices were low, but not impossible to make out. The only question that remained was if Fey could do it. The dream of the future you see, dissolves...
So she was close, but not quite on the mark. Her impression of the park must have been a bit skewed by the atmosphere she was used to. To her it seemed too nice for a drug deal, but she supposed even the most high class areas would have those things hiding in the cracks. Fey gave a nod, continuing after Maevia. She flinched a bit when a the laugh suddenly came, returning it with a smile and a small chuckle of her own. A bit forced, but better than nothing. It was surprising this woman could laugh on command like that. “Some people are just oblivious, you know?” Fey replied with the first suitable thing that came to mind. As long as it seemed somewhat natural she supposed it didn't matter much. [break][break] Fey's eye glanced to the men as they passed. She couldn't help but notice the pair eyeing them. She gave a smile and a shallow wave, sometimes acknowledging someones gaze was an easier way to divert attention from yourself. That was at least one thing she picked up lurking around the slums, the shop keepers were often less likely to suspect you of theft if you didn't try to ignore them entirely. “Kaay.” Fey replied airily to Maevia, following back behind her to take a seat down on the bench. Look busy, she leaned over close to Maevia's shoulder, eyes focused toward the screen of her phone. [break][break] “What'd she send, anything good?” Fey asked idly, but now her attention was anywhere but the screen of the phone. It was a little difficult to keep her eye from following the motions of flicking through apps so she sat back into a normal position. However Maevia would respond, she would give a contemplative hum as she reached into a pocket and pulled out her own phone. Fey took a moment to adjust some hair out of her face, sweeping it over a horn before her eye flicked to her phone. She pulled up a tetris game, something to simply keep her fingers active while she tried to focus more on the muffled speech behind them. [break][break] She found it a little difficult to make things out with the pairs voices low, but a bit of focus would let her get the gist of the hushed conversation. It was easier than trying to pick things out from the noisy streets of the slums market at least. She picked up a few key things, a suspected kidnapping. An adolescent last scene in the area. Her eye occasionally flicked back to the pair behind her, catching a few subtle gestures. The nod of a head to direct attention towards one direction, a glance at a particular individual moving through the parkway. It sounded like a stakeout, maybe looking for someone specific to return to the area. Fey gave another small hum, idly kicking a leg back and fourth as she tapped at her phone. “Hey, I'm getting kinda hungry. Wanna go out for steak or something tonight?” Fey asked, keeping her voice casual, her eye not taking its attention from the little game on her phone. Something subtle, or at least she hoped it was.
Notes Fey totally doesn't just want a steak.

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] STEAK OUT Maevia smiled and nodded with a small wink at Fey; she was quick on her feet, and fell in seamlessly with her sudden outburst. She knew how to treat people who suspected you of something; she already must have had some experiences. Probably not positive ones, she thought with a mental sigh, but at least they might serve her now. In truth she was glad to have Fey along for this; her own attention was divided in too many ways, Kupiec’s teasing words still playing on her mind. Hell, he was probably just watching her right now. Ass. What did he know about her, anyway? She already knew gods had limited omniscience from getting him to slip up once; he was making baseless conjecture. She didn’t feel for people; she gave them attention proportionate to their usefulness. Sure, it was a silly theory that somehow Fey had magic that could control her, but magic was an odd duck all on its own. Her grimace was fierce but quick at the words "out" and “steak,” because she knew what was coming next. She was already pulling up restaurants on her holo and humming with indecision by the time the two men looked their way. “Nah, we just had steak like, three days ago,” she said, forcing a tone of disgust into the words. “Why not try the noodle place down by the Gold Falls Casino?” She leaned over to Fey, showing her the menu and pictures of the place. She felt the gaze of the men lift and a weight lifted off her chest. Either she goofed up trying to use codewords to her, or she was testing for a reaction from the men to verify their motives. If it was the latter, Fey was far more clever than she’d realized. Normally, that’d be a scary thought, but now she felt a sense of… pride? More for herself, she thought, for knowing how to pick the right people. One of the more useful upgrades to her self-modified limb was a false-holo; one that displayed something different than the screen below it. She typed a message to Fey while pretending to view more restaurant options, keeping on that back-and-forth with the girl. Write down what you hear, don’t subtly hint it to me. Keep the conversation natural. These guys are on edge, remember. Don’t spook them. Listen and record. Then she would lean back, smiling at Fey. “Okay well, those are our options then, hmm. Oh, I wonder if we should ask Leah to come out with us? Or is she still messin’ with that guy?”Tags: Fey Lomeli Notes: Hey dingus watch the codewords. let's grab a STEAK at OUTback. WINK NUDGE WINK. Fey felt her heart skip a beat when she saw the sharp grimace paint the other woman's face. Had she made a mistake? She could feel critical eyes lingering at her back. “Ah... yeah... sure. Thats ok.” Her eye went to the series of menus, tentatively grumbling a bit. She had to get a grip on her nerves before her head unraveled entirely. It was fine, her hunch was at least confirmed, albeit with some bumps she would have liked to go without. [break][break] Her eye flicked to the hidden, then back to Maevia. She should have known that much, and hadn't even thought of using the phone to deliver her thoughts. Her attention went back to her phone for a moment, finding a notepad application and taking a second to type something out. Sorry it simply read as Fey tilted the phone screen a bit towards Maevia to see. She would have to apologize properly later the girl told herself. “Sure, thats ok. Hrmm... I dunno, shes always busy these days isn't she.” Fey replied, the voice a bit less chipper than it had been before. After her mistake she didn't have to force it nor did she have the mind to try and change it. She was sure it would have just came out as forced and stilted. But she could at least try to play into it. [break][break] Fey sighed and leaned back against the bench, letting her posture slump a bit and swaying a leg back and fourth. “That guy sucks. I can't believe she doesn't see how scummy he is.” Fey muttered some idle chatter with a discontented grumble. For now it seemed the pair of men had went back to ignoring them. That was a relief, had she been buy herself she would have been able to do anything more than sneak away. Still, with her nerves a bit on edge her mind was wandering now. She looked back to her phone once more, making like she was quickly pulling a page up while she typed another quick message into the notepad [break][break] “Just, look, its so gross the way she obsesses. Shes gonna get really burned at this rate.” Fey said, leaning in towards Maevia and setting a hand on her shoulder as she held the phone up for the other woman to look. She was careful of her positioning so a stray glance from behind would not see the screen and put on an intense face to sell the feigned disgust. Her screen simply read What should I do now?. She stayed for a moment before huffing and returning to a proper position. “Whatever... what am I getting all worked up for.” She concluded with a sigh.

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] GALS BEING PALS Even Maevia’s act dropped temporarily as she stiffened at the magi’s touch on her shoulder. “Yeah, yeah,” she said, nodding as she typed. “Let’s just not even bother with her tonight. I’m already stressed enough.”Relax. Listen. Watch. Her message was simple, because Fey was clearly panicking. Her act stiffened, she was forgetting herself, and she seemed very uncomfortable. She tossed her a smile and a wink; it was okay, for now. Really, that was what she needed to do. Act, listen, and remember the details. Write them, record their audio, whatever it took. She didn’t tell her that much; it was better to get into the habit of paying attention first and writing down later. Too much multitasking led to mistakes, and mistakes made dead agents. The conversation continued, talking about their made-up friend, their dinner plans, and any other innocuous things that would be discussed by two friends going for a walk in the park on a nice day. The men spoke for a while longer, and she left Fey to see what she could notice and remember. After a bit, they stood up, and each walked their separate ways. Clearly the target wasn’t showing itself now, or it was a bad time to strike. They could have been spooked, but she knew from prior knowledge who they were waiting for, and that they’d never catch them here. Not being so obvious, anyway. She was silent for a bit, relaxing and spreading her arms on the back of the bench. After the men stopped tossing glances at them, she dropped the holo. She didn’t give Fey any indication that she was upset, or that she didn’t actually cause the men to walk. It was better to listen first, and tell later. Without the conversation to spy on or a chat to fake, the sounds of people playing in the park were prominent once again. “So,” she said, without looking at Fey. “Tell me what you heard. What you saw. What you know, and what you think you know.”

The dream of the future you see, dissolves...
Fey couldn't help but give a little sigh. That was really all, to sit and listen? Maybe she had been over thinking the whole thing. When it was summed up in three little words it seemed simple. She silently complied as she eased back into her seat on the bench. “So, what should we do after dinner then? Catch a movie?” Fey chimed in idly, something to fill the silence. Anything to help her from feeling more uncomfortable than she already was. For now she had to try and focus more than she needed to try and be clever. Stick with the basics, she scolded herself in her head. [break][break] Idle conversation continued about this and that, it was a bit impressive Maevia seemed to be able to chat about some person that did not exist without thinking anything of it. It helped though, it meant she just had to respond with something that made some semblance of sense within the context. It took a while, but eventually the pair of men stood and split off down the parkway. Fey's eye followed them in her peripheral vision for a few moments, waiting to be sure they would be far enough away. [break][break] When they were Fey slumped over and breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Her hand ran over her face and she adjusted her hair before leaning the side of her chin and cheek into a hand. The girl gave a somewhat nervous glance to Maevia before she spoke up, shifting to sit a bit straighter after she did. “I think they were looking for someone... or waiting for someone... to come back here...” She muttered out. She couldn't help but feel a lack of confidence in the hunch, but the men's reaction to her earlier statement as well as Maevia's seemed to tell her she was on the right track. [break][break] “Um... sorry I messed up earlier... too... I wasn't thinking...” Fey murmured sheepishly, she was feeling somewhat guilty. It was hard not to think she caused things to go south, that things would have gone better had she not gotten ahead of herself. The girl gave another light sigh. “I think it was a missing persons case...” She added onto the end, hoping the conclusion she had gathered from bits and pieces of chatter was at least close.
Notes Pshhh it was a fine post.

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] RELAX Maevia nodded along with her words. Ah, just like many new agents. The panic… She remembers the panic of starting out, the thrill of her first task, the contact from Anansi… Exciting, but it was far too easy to overthink, panic, and screw up. “The problem is not that you’re thinking too little, but you’re thinking too much,” she said. It was clear from her conversational tone that she wasn’t mad at her. She flashed a smile and stood up, beckoning her to follow for another leisurely stroll around the path, dodging playing children and bicyclists, listening to the sounds of laughter and conversation. She took a breath of fresh air, tinged with the smell of cinnamon from the roasted nuts vendor. Too sweet for her liking, but the smell was always a pleasant one. “You’re too worried about hypotheticals,” she continued. “Worried about not knowing enough. It’s my job to turn the raw information into something bigger. What you do is supply it to me. Don’t fret about thinking what it might be; remember what they say and how they say it, what names they mention, locations, numbers, dates… things like that. That’s where you need to start. Leave the analysis to me for now.”She chuckled. Yeah, she saw a lot of herself in the magi. She was clearly trying to be useful to her. Perhaps out of fear that she would be cast aside as useless? That was far from the case; rather, she has the mind to be an excellent right-hand agent, something she’d been sorely missing for a long time. Her brain worked well, but it was trying to build the house without taking time to lay a proper foundation. “That said, you’re right.” She nodded. Normally agents didn’t get to be privy to the information she had unless it was necessary, but this seemed like a time for an exception. “And they didn’t show. That’s why they left. And they’ll come back here and waste their time, since the person in question doesn’t want to be found.”She volunteered no more explanation to her vague statement. Even if she were to, they were interrupted on the sidewalk by a ball rolling from the grass into Maevia’s foot. A small girl followed close behind it. Maevia nudged it over to her, and she picked it up with a bright smile. “Thanks!” She recoiled a bit at Maevia, but then glanced to Fey and pointed. “Wow! Your horns are real pretty! I want ones like that! Can you do magic???”Her excitement was interrupted by her mother coming from behind and leading the child away by the hand. She flashed the pair the smile of a mother used to these antics. “Sorry,” she said. “She’s a curious little talker. Come on, sweetie.”Maevia watched them walk off with a smile, the girl glancing back at Fey and undoubtedly telling her mother about the pretty horned girl. The way the mom acted around them wasn’t one of hurried protection or disgust; just an exasperated mother not wanting her kid to bother every stranger. It was a small, pleasant reminder that not every human viewed Magi as horrible, dangerous animals. She would gauge Fey’s reaction carefully, trying to learn more about the mysterious girl. After any conversation about what just happened, Maevia would carry on with business, as it was the only topic she felt truly comfortable in. “So what lead you to that decision, about the missing person’s case? What gave it away?”Tags: Fey Lomeli Notes: okay now i'm startin' to feel it again [attr="class","iconie"] [newclass=.biggie]-webkit-transitionduration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover]margin-left:-300px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie]opacity:0;margin-top:-425px;margin-bottom:150px;width:285px;height:400px;padding:10px;background-color:#000000;border:solid 1px #000000;color:#e4e0e0;text-align:justify;overflow:auto;margin-left:10px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;font:11px calibri;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .textie]opacity:1;margin-left:610px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie::-webkit-scrollbar]width:10px;background:#000000;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background:#9589a0;border:2px solid #e4e0e0;[/newclass] [newclass=.iconie]opacity:0;margin-top:-240px;margin-left:-220px;margin-bottom:50px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .iconie]opacity:1;[/newclass] [newclass=.tagsie]opacity:0;font:11px calibri;color:#b7b7b7;margin-top:-75px;margin-left:-75px;margin-bottom:40px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .tagsie]opacity:1;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass]

The dream of the future you see, dissolves...
Thinking too much? The girl blinked in a bit of confusion, the entire thing seemed to rely on a persons ability to process a situation and pick out useful bits in the moment. But with further explanation, it seemed she was on the wrong foot with her approach. She was trying to process everything and figure out what might be going on in the moment, rather than simply gathering the information. “I guess so...” Fey murmured with a sheepish laugh, scratching the back of her head. She took in a deep breath, drawing in the sweet scent of baked goods, trying to relax herself. [break][break] If nothing else she was right about her hunch at least. The small girl gave a smile and a nod. Being right at least showed she was looking at some of the right things, even if she was trying to do too much with it too quickly. Fey's eye drew around the area, giving a small hum as she pondered for a bit. “I hope they find who they're looking for.” She said idly. She couldn't help but feel a pang of remorse. A missing persons case, that meant there was someone gone, with people left behind without any answers. That was something that hit close to home, but she tried to shake it off. For now she wanted to keep her focus on the situation at hand. [break][break] The pair continued on walking for a few moments and Fey pondered on what Maevia had said. She wondered what the situation could have been, for a person to not want to be found. Maybe they were a criminal, or maybe they were running from someone. Maybe they just wanted to start a new life, away from anyone they might have known. She tilted her head a bit and hummed, before being snapped out of her thought by a ball rolling over towards them. Fey flinched, her eye flicking to Maevia as she rolled the ball on back to a girl that had approached. She seemed timid of Maevia, but was soon pointing towards her. Fey's eye widened and her face flushed a bit, hands springing to the horns atop her head out of habit. [break][break] A moment passed and she made herself relax, giving a little smile. She gave a shallow nod, she was able to use magic after all. Fey held up a hand, focusing a bit and bringing a heat to her palm. Her skin began to shimmer like flowing, molten rock, patterns slowly dancing below the skin. The girl's mother soon showed up to sweep the child away. Fey couldn't help but smile a bit, she hoped that child would keep that curiosity and excitement. It would let everyone be one step closer to peace. [break][break] Fey gave a small wave as the girl was shuffled away, turning back to Maevia with a smile. She blinked for a moment, having to flick back to the topic of business after the distraction. “They were talking about some witnesses, I think... said they last saw the person here. That they might come back... but it didn't sound like they had a lot of leads.” Fey stated, a finger went up to her shoulder to idly tussle her hair. “So I thought if they were going out on something that small, someone might have gone missing.” She continued, it was a bit of conjecture on her part but it did turn out to be right, at least. Her mind wove back to the previous statement that the person wouldn't be coming back, didn't want to be found. “Um, how do you know that person wont come back?” She asked curiously, her eye turned up towards the other woman.

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] DEPTH Maevia gave a low, warm laugh. “Trust me; don’t do too much too fast. You’ll miss things. It takes time to learn to filter the useful from the less-useful, but in the end, every detail is important. Assemble enough crumbs, and you’ll have a cookie.”She smiled at the last sentence. A phrase her detective father had always said to her. She shook her head at Fey’s next sentence, only able to say “No, you don’t,” to her wishes of luck to the men before the event with the child and the ball occurred. Even Maevia watched Fey’s glowing skin with an expression of awe, not unlike the kid’s. It was interesting and beautiful to see such things manifest from a person, and even if it weirded her out, there was something exciting about watching magic, actual magic, happen before your eyes. And it was nice to see Fey not afraid to show off a bit to make someone’s day. “Well, your logic is sound, if a lacking for confidence, but that’s to be expected for now,” she said. “The most important thing is that we blended in right next to them. That’s the skill that’ll keep you alive and under the radar while eavesdropping. Make sure you’ve got that down before taking risks.” She retrieved her pack of cigarettes from her pockets, lit a stick with her lighter, and lazily puffed on it as they walked. “Lots of would be ‘spies-‘” she practically spat the word as she rolled her eyes, “got killed because they had some cute idea about lurking in shadows or hiding out for days ahead of time. That’s suspicious. Homeless magi, friends on a bench, customer at a restaurant- that’s normal.”She inhaled a bit too much at Fey’s inquiry, causing her to go into a rough coughing fit for a few seconds. Once she had control of her throat and body again, she cleared it with some violent “hm-hmms” and another shallow cough. Another dig at information? Was she curious, or something else? She was silent for a few moments. “They don’t want to be found,” she said. “For good reason. They know they’re being looked for. They’re not interested in… going home.”Any further pressing would be met with silence from Maevia. Revealing her knowledge so easily… no, not this time. Fey would just have to be satisfied with that. After all, not everything is as it seems. The dream of the future you see, dissolves...
The girl gave a shallow nod. She had to admit she had gotten ahead of herself. She couldn't help but giggle lightly at the last sentence. “Thats cute.” She replied simply between her small laugh. She caught Maevia looking at her much like the child had, which she couldn't help but find cute too. The next sentence however cast something of dark tone over the proceedings. She had been thinking under the assumption that the pair were looking for this person to help them, but it seemed that was far from the case. Still, the vote of confidence from her mentor from the time being at least helped her keep her head up. Another nod, she would have to remember to not get any grandiose ideas about her work. [break][break] “Right... keep it simple.” She confirmed. She didn't want to be one of those unfortunate ones that ended up dead on some over the top idea. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated. She just had to gather the information, be efficient. A few moments later her attention turned back to Maevia, eyes widening with a slight start. “H-hey are you ok? Those things can kill you you know.” Fey said quickly, slipping up to the taller woman's side. She didn't intend to pick or pry at her habits, but the sudden coughing drew her attention to it. She wondered if she had developed a lung condition. She wondered if cyborgs could have lung conditions. [break][break] After a moment she stepped back a bit, out of the woman's personal space. She gave a small sigh during the silence. She had to hope Maevia was living healthily at least. Or as much as could be expected. She wasn't much to talk with her own life style, but she couldn't quite help it. Eventually she replied, prompting a light hum. She brought a hand to her mouth for a moment as she thought on it. That sounded... bad. To not want to go home, it must have been bad. [break][break] “Well... I hope everything works out, then.” She looked back to Maevia with a somewhat melancholic smile. Beyond this, the status of that person wasn't much her business. She knew she couldn't save everyone, especially when she only knew glimpses of the situation.

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] TRUTH “Heh,” she laughed with a short exhale of breath. “Guess so. Heard it a lot growing up. It’s good advice.” There was a brief moment of silence from her, as she temporarily lost herself in memories of growing up, being a child and bothering her father. He was always neck-deep in paperwork and files, but couldn’t hide the smile while he patiently answered his daughter’s boundless questions about his job. She wondered for a moment what he would think of her now. She was pulled out of her thoughts by Fey’s sudden question and the following cough-and-hacking fit. She waves away Fey’s concern as she doubled over coughing, trying to get words out but only able to hack up air for a short time. She nodded, finally. “It’s fine,” she said, her voice dry and tight as she tried to force down further coughs. “Inhaled more than I wanted to. Surprised.” After a few more moments, she was able to clear her throat and speak normally once more. She tapped on her chest as she took a full breath of air. “Yeah, yeah, I know,” she said. “Don’t have a long life expectancy in this job, anyway. Few people stay on top for long. Lots of enemies.” She’d gauge Fey’s reaction; if it seemed worried, she’d add “You’ll be around until you’re old if you keep your wits about you; smart agents live long enough to retire.”She seemed unfazed by her own remark. It’s true; she didn’t have many expectations of living a long life. Medical care could keep her upright no matter what her smoking did to her body. It was the external factors that were the hazards; she wanted to live out her life, of course, she just didn’t expect to. She was involved with a god, and an entity so powerful he may as well be one, in addition to prodding at the hunter’s guild and university; something was going to give, sooner or later. She sighed at Fey’s remark. Hoping for the best. That might make things hard on her. Hesitantly, Maevia stopped their walk and looked Fey in the eye. She put her hands on her shoulders, gently, the cigarette still burning between her fingers. “This might be the hardest thing for you to master about this job,” she said. “I can tell you’re a caring person, and I don’t want to change that about you. But you’re going to see a lot of things. You’re going to see people you want to help but can’t. It’s going to kill you inside to only listen and not do anything to stop it. You need to understand this, or you’re going to put yourself in unnecessary danger, or become even more upset about the state of the world.” She dropped her arms from Fey and turned to start the walk again. “This work doesn’t take sides; it’s not a great good nor is it a terrible evil. It’s a neutral party in a world filled with strife.”
She puffed lightly on her cigarette. She felt like she was tearing away at the girl’s core. It hurt her to ramble off the cold realities of her job, but ultimately it was better for her to hear it now. “I don’t want you getting the wrong idea. I’m not a savior, despite how we met. It’s best you understand that, before you continue to work with me.”===== Tags: Fey Lomeli Notes: reality check time [attr="class","iconie"] [newclass=.biggie]-webkit-transitionduration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover]margin-left:-300px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie]opacity:0;margin-top:-425px;margin-bottom:150px;width:285px;height:400px;padding:10px;background-color:#000000;border:solid 1px #000000;color:#e4e0e0;text-align:justify;overflow:auto;margin-left:10px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;font:11px calibri;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .textie]opacity:1;margin-left:610px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie::-webkit-scrollbar]width:10px;background:#000000;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background:#9589a0;border:2px solid #e4e0e0;[/newclass] [newclass=.iconie]opacity:0;margin-top:-240px;margin-left:-220px;margin-bottom:50px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .iconie]opacity:1;[/newclass] [newclass=.tagsie]opacity:0;font:11px calibri;color:#b7b7b7;margin-top:-75px;margin-left:-75px;margin-bottom:40px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .tagsie]opacity:1;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass]

The dream of the future you see, dissolves...
Fey gave a nod, she supposed it was good advice for this sort of work. She would have to keep it in mind in the future. “You should be more careful with that... it'd be bad if something happened.” Fey lectured a bit with a huff. She couldn't help it, with the words that came the girl grew a bit uneasy, crossing her arms to her chest. “And... I just hope nothing happens to you. I'd be... kind of lost now if something did.” She said, her voice going quieter, a tiny dry laugh coming out. She was relying on this woman now, in one way or another. If she were gone she would have been back to square one. But more over it would have been sad, too sad. After all the help she had been given for something bad to happen. [break][break] Maevia didn't seem much bothered by this reality nor by her health habits. She supposed she would have to leave it be, it wasn't really her business and this woman surely knew what she was doing enough to keep her head above water. Fey just hoped it would last, or luck would hold out. Before long, the pair stopped, prompted by a sigh. Fey's eyes drew to Maevia's as a pair of hands set on her shoulders, the cybernetic fingers contrasting against the biological. Fey blinked and could feel the skin around her neck heating up slightly. [break][break] The words that came felt somewhat harsh and her gaze fell unavoidably. She supposed it was in her nature to care too much even when it wasn't her business to care, or when she could truly do nothing. Hearing those words she knew she had some hope of being able to help people with this work in the back of her head, but that was her own selfish unspoken desire. One she would have to put away if she were to live. Her shoulders slumped a bit just before the hands retracted from them, and she gave a small sigh. “I know... I just... Even if I can't do anything... I guess I still want to hope...” Fey shook her head a bit. She was unsure if that made sense or was even something she should have held. Maybe she would have to change that in the future, maybe she wouldn't be able to hold onto that desire for hope, but for now that was how she felt. [break][break] When Maevia started walking again Fey lingered for a moment before trotting back up beside the woman. “Maevia... listen... I... I know I probably seem naive to you... but... I've already seen a lot of things, when I was young. I know I can't help everyone. Maybe I can't even help anyone. I know that... I've had to turn a blind eye to things a lot...” She paused for a moment, trying to find the right words, grumbling a little as she thought. “But... Even if its not me. Even if I never even see it. Even if I only see terrible things. I still want to believe that, somewhere down the line, this work could help someone. And things could be just a little bit better.” As she spoke a hand went to her chest, clutching at the fabric of her dress, her eye turned downward towards her feet. Afterwards she fell silent for a moment, before giving a small laugh and looking back up to the taller woman. “Maybe that won't ever happen, but, I know I'm helping you at least. So thats something.”

[attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"] TRUTH She couldn’t help but laugh at Fey’s statement. “Actually, you’d be pretty well off! All my intel will erase when I die, so technically that safehouse would be a permanent place for you, safe and hidden.” Her lips pursed to the side as she thought. “Well, I guess the water and electricity would eventually go. Ah, I guess I’d better stay alive in that case, hm?” She flashed the magi a wink. Just like in the diner, she was feeling chummy all over again. Could Kupiec actually have been right about something? Oh, she didn’t want to deal with the headache from his endless gloating if it were true. She rose her brows in a bit of a shock as Fey returned Maevia’s lecture with one of her own. She shook her head with a smile. Of course. She was a magi; no doubt she’s seen shit every day. Something so basic… How could she forget? Fey’s laughter and general uplifting mood was contagious. She had to admit, Fey had good points. “No, no. It was my mistake; I forgot my place for a moment,” she said, somewhat embarrassed to admit it. “No doubt you’ve seen more things than someone should have to in a lifetime. Dagos isn’t friendly. Magi always get the worst of all Ethea has to offer. I just wanted to make it clear. And, like I said, I’m not looking to crush your hopefulness- I just want you to be prepared for the realities of this employment. And it’s not all bad, of course,” she added with a slow exhale of smoke. “I’ve given information that’s reunited families and saved lives, done favors that helped people out of tight spots, seen some bad people fall… Information doesn’t care if it’s a hero, but sometimes it just happens to be.”In the back of her mind, she thought of an opposite situation for every happy one she named off. Led hunters to prey, let innocents suffer, arranged the deaths of more than she cared to count. Her face was expressionless; it didn’t cause her any distress, no. Facts were facts, clients were clients, and business was nothing but business. She had long rid herself of optimism and rose-tinted glasses; everything she did was cold calculus. Their conversation and walk led them to a shady tree, with nobody in the direct area. She gestured that they should sit here for a time. “Speaking of, you wanted me to find someone. Why don’t you tell me about her?”===== Tags: Fey Lomeli Notes: now even sadder topics!
