He'd been talked into it. Oliver still wasn't entirely sure how they'd managed that, even after getting him intoxicated, but it happened. The next morning, coupled with a slight hangover, was the proof of what had happened the night before. Email receipts. Round trip. For three. Ikigai. Dates aligning with the Ikigain celebration of the New Year.
So now here he was. Watching a vibrantly colored parade with River beside him. Maia? Psh, she was somewhere. Who knew? Oliver was anything but a helicopter parent. His teenage daughter was somewhere in the, well, country. The girl had been handed a wad of correct national currency and had been instructed on what day and time to be sure to have returned to their hotel. The day they were planning on meeting and heading over to the airport. Other than that? He didn't care where she went. Maia was doing only gods knew what and he was okay with that.
As for the two young men, they were just wandering around. River spoke Ethean sign language and Oliver was not even learned of basic Ikigain necessity phrases. Where was the bathroom? He was simply surviving by keeping an eye out for pictured signs and others broken Ethean. Good enough for him.
It was about midway into the evening, maybe ten o'clock, when River would tap him on the shoulder. Seemed he wanted to check out another stall. Eh, he was fine with that. Oliver was mostly just taking in the foreign sights and enjoying the food after all. He didn't have any other major plans for the trip other than that. Some ... scooping of the fish? Oliver would shrug and watch River partake in the so-called game. More like work training for the youth to be employed at a pets store. But then came his turn? Ugh, fine. Oliver would take the scoop with a shrug. Seemed there was a chance to win a few bucks. Might as well.
