Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face Elijah had excused himself from the group. Yes, he was thankful and he expressed so. Maevia for leading him here to this moment. Luca for keeping his daughter safe for so long by himself. And he had set up a time to meet back up, as well as a location so he could treat everyone to a meal, his treat. But for now? The earth magi walked with purpose holding his little girl closely to himself. He wanted to be alone with the very person he had spent the last near decade searching for.
Where they ended up was an MLM station house. MLM were the police in this city. The organization were the peace keepers. To humans they could just be branded as terrorists. But here they were the kind uniformed police men and women who were stationed at check points through out Haven. Hell, they were there not only as officers of the peace but were also there to answer questions, even hand out maps. With such a uniquely multi-tiered city, they were absolutely needed for newcomers.
Elijah, with the weight he carried as a leader of such an organization, asked the officer in charge for the use of her private office. So quickly did he enter that room and close the door behind him. Fingers running through hair. "Can I ... Can I touch your face sweet heart? Daddy wants to see you and this is how I see now." His fingers would remain tentative, waiting to see if the child would nod her head in affirmation. If the nod would occur he'd spend the next moments lightly grazing her facial features. Delicately. As if she were made of porcelain. His hands shook at the intensity.

❊ Without you | I'm just a sad song ❊ Stella walked with a new found excitement in her step as she walked as closely as possible to her father, holding his hand as they walked through the maze of streets. She did her best to start memorizing the various twists and turns, but even she knew that in a few minutes she'd have forgotten everything. The world the Magi lived in was a bunch of puzzles. Just getting to Haven was an achievement within itself, but then actually learning where to go? Good luck. Eventually they went into a building and then into a back office. Stella looked around curiously, man would she love to explore this place sometime, not just this building but the whole area.. quickly her focus turned to her father though as he spoke out. Stella quickly grinned from ear to ear and gave a nod as she closed her eyes. She'd remain as still as possible to let her father soak in this moment. It was very hard for Stella not to just koala the being before her but she remained still until her father was done feeling her face. The young girl frowned though as she could feel her father's hand shaking. She grabbed her fathers large hand with her own small delicate ones and held his hand against Stella's cheek as she nuzzled her fathers hand. The young magi felt bad because she wasn't sure how to make her father not scared but she was sure Luca would help her father from whatever he was scared of just like Luca did for her! Once her father was done though, it was her turn to 'see' her father. Stella smiled widely as she tugged down on her father's shirt, doing whatever it took to finally get her father to kneel down enough so that she could touch her fathers face. As she touched her father's face, she also closed her eyes, doing her best to take it all in. In trying to do so, she grew very confused and flustered, all she could see was darkness, black, nothing. How could her father see like this? It was confusing and make Stella a little jealous. She couldn't believe her father was so amazing. Once she was done though, what was she to do next? Hmm.. She looked around for a moment before trying to sign to her father, asking him what there was to do in this office place... after a few more moments of silence, she proceeded to tap him on the shoulder, hoping that he’d get the message that she had questions for him.

gods, I've already shed tears we've only JUST begun XD I'm doomed. clearly LOL Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face This day had proven to be filled beyond the brim with moments that Elijah would replay over and over until the day he died. There had not been enough room within himself. There was not enough room for these feelings, these experiences. Similar to a glass being continuously poured into by the kitchen faucet. There simply was not enough room in him for this. There ... Elijah's breath halted mid-inhale at the sensation of his daughter's cheek nuzzling his hand. There wasn't enough room in him. There wasn't enough room.
Tears burned at his eyes once again but didn't dare stream. He'd gotten his daughter to stop crying after their initial reunion. He wasn't going to get her started again. Not simply for the reason of her father crying. Once she went to sleep tonight Elijah knew he was going to be a sobbing mess once again. The excess of the day's emotions had to release at some point. For truly, even during the multiple hours in the car with Maevia and during their search of the city, he had still not fully prepared himself for this life changing event. There was simply not enough room within himself.
The tapping to the shoulder would snap the man out of his daze. Gods, time was such a fluid and mysterious factor ever since his daughter had returned into his arms. Who knew how much time had passed? And here was his little girl being patient with her old man. The message was received, albeit with an inner frown. He knew what needed to happen. He knew what questions his daughter surely wanted to ask. And that he would have to be the one to answer them.
... the fact he needed an interpreter to understand his daughter's reactions to the news he was tasked in sharing with her.
"H-- ... hold on, princess. Let me grab someone." This was unfair. Even with how thankful and elated he was to have this moment in his life, there was a bitter something building in his chest. Elijah knew in a fair world this separation for years would never have happened. He would still have his sight to gaze upon his daughter's beautiful face. His daughter would be able to speak to him and sing those little songs she used to. This wasn't fair. As the man stood up from his kneeling position the phrase repeated. This wasn't fair. This wasn't fair.
Opening the door a crack he'd speak softly with the MLM agent whose office he had taken over temporarily. A translator was required. Sign language. Was there anyone in the near vacinity who could assist them. Being told there was and that the individual would be joining them within a few minutes. Exchanging a nod of thanks with the magi outside in the hall, Elijah would close the door and make his way back over to where he could feel his daughter's tiny feet standing.
Clearing his throat, the man would sit. Not upon any chair the room had to offer but upon the floor. He wanted to be as close to his little girl as he could. If she wished to sit upon his lap he would gladly accommodate. "Um ..." The man's voice uncharacteristically cracked. This was not fair. But it was the situation and he had to be responsible. "Daddy just asked for a translator, princess. Someone to tell me what you're saying. I, uh, ...." This was at least one unspoken question he could answer while he waited for the MLM translator to make it to their location.
"Daddy ... lost his ability to see. With his eyes." Elijah would begin. The explanation required to clarify the need for a translator. Even if his little Stella knew how to write, that would still not be a solution to their problem. "About eight years ago." Elijah would nod, hoping he was phrasing things as clearly but also as softly as he possibly could. Gods, the subjects needed to be breached were not going to be easy ones. "So that's why I need to see with my hands now."
Elijah would take a deep breath, allowing one of his hands to gently cradle the child's neck. This would allow him to feel nods or shakings of the head. That in the least he could do to understand his daughter until the help arrived. "It doesn't hurt now. It feels normal. So there's nothing to be worried about. And I've learned how to get around pretty well through my Earth magic."
The man would place a soft smile upon his lips. "Do you remember when I would make you pretty jewelry? Or when I would grow you flowers?" He'd wait for an affirmation or decline of a few of the memories he held so dear. "It's like that. When I tap the ground I can feel vibrations and they let me know what's around me. Does that make some sort of sense, sweet heart?"

❊ Without you | I'm just a sad song ❊ So many questions buried deep within her mind. Questions that had several layers of dust on them. Questions that she really didn't want to ask, but knew they'd come out eventually. Stella felt a pang of sadness as her father walked away from her. She subconsciously raised a hand towards her departing father... though she was quick to come to her senses and lower it, putting a hand over her face in embarrassment. He moved no more than maybe a few metres away, there was no need for those kind of actions.. Elijah came back almost as quickly as he had left and assumed a spot on the floor.
Stella was quick to climb into the lap of her father and nuzzle herself up against his chest. Her father began to talk about his situation and why he couldn't see.. as he went on Stella felt herself squeezing her eyes shut as she clung to her father's shirt even more. Could those men have done the same thing to her father? That was simply unforgivable... if.. if only..if only she knew who he was. Her guardian.. well, hers and her mother's.. sort of. If she just knew who he was, he would be able to fix everything, unlike herself.. Her father's voice about jewelry snapped Stella out of her uncharacteristic trance and she grinned wildly as she sat straight up and turned to face her father. While the exact memories of jewelry making was just a blur, she still had the one things that kept her going through everything. She put her hands behind her ears and pushed out her earlobes in an attempt to show off her grey earrings.. Stella quickly flinched though and scolded herself for already forgetting such an important detail.. she quickly went to amend her fault by grabbing at her father's hands and attempting to lead his hands to her ears where he'd be able to feel the earrings they made oh so long ago. Soon after the translator walked into the room and Stella found herself shooting daggers at the man. As much as she understood that her father somewhat needed the man to understand Stella, she still disliked him for intruding on their alone time. Now was her chance to ask a question though, and she froze. What did she want to ask first? She had built up so many questions over the years.. some had faded over time, but there were plenty that stuck around as well. Did she ask about the days right after being separated? Why they took her away? Who was her guardian demon? All questions that Stella would have loved to know... but among them was a new question. One that overpowered the rest in an instant when it was brought to the front of her mind. She wasn't really sure why this was even a debate. This question was a clear winner... but was she ready for the answer? Yes, she had to be, she was a strong girl now, Luca had done a great job with that. On top of that, she was a very optimistic girl which would help with receiving the answer. She looked at the translator and began to sign, "Where's mom?" Stella's hands were slightly shaky which gave away her otherwise calm and collected appearance.

More tears. Don't mind me. "With Tatara" is pretty much the equivalent to "in Heaven". Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face The answer came in the form of one of his hands being led to the little girl's ear. A genuine smile itched at his lips. After all this time ... Calloused fingers would trace the spheres. The material almost as if speaking to him would assure him of what his mind had concluded. These were the earrings he'd made for her in the camps. She'd had a part of him all this time, just as he'd had her ring. The man made a mental note to gift the precious rings to his most precious daughter. Stella deserved to have something of her mother's.
"Oh, that makes me so happy, princess. Thank you for letting me know about your earrings." Elijah would move to kiss the child upon the head. Hopefully the act was done successfully. But as a blind man there would be days a closed eyelid would be smooched rather than where he might have been aiming. Regardless, he'd relish in the act. That he was able to accomplish it at all.
A light knock would gain his attention as he beckoned a young woman to enter. A three-year member of the MLM, a fire magi of arguably cute traits. Perky rabbit ears, a puffball rabbit tail. In fact everything waist down was reminiscent of the animal her traits seemed to replicate. So the young woman wouldn't as much walk into the room as she would hop as came natural. "Hello, I'm Agent Tillie Olsen." She would say, signing as her words as well, not having been told if she was dealing with a mute or deaf individual. It was best to cover all the bases.
"Hi, Ms Tillie." Elijah would say, politely smiling to the new comer, assuming Stella would say her own version of a hello. "Can you please relay to me what is being signed?"
"Of course, sir." Tillie didn't have much personal experience with this particular leader of the MLM. She served under another. But she knew enough that the man was blind. So her services being requested made even more sense.
"Go ahead, princess." Elijah would say with a soft smile that acted more as a poker bluff than actual happiness. He had a gut feeling. Their reunion had come to the more difficult portion. The assurance was given with a soft and caring air. No pressure. No rushing.
Signs would be seen. Two in fact. "Mom where?" is how it literally translated. So of course Tillie would easily be able to relay the message. However it would note that those proud tall ears would lose their posture upon hearing the question. She didn't know the situation in front of her. But she'd been in Haven long enough. She'd been an MLM agent. She'd witnessed enough refugees make their ways into their city. Swallowing, Tillie's bubbly voice would have appropriately dampened a bit. "Where is mom?" She would say, her words lingering in silence for a while.
.... Elijah's lungs halted working for a moment. It had all been so nice. So much light. So much brightness and joy for the most part. It couldn't stay that way. It just couldn't, could it? It was the father's turn to swallow hard. This was the most difficult question he'd ever received in his life. And it was one he knew the answer to. Flashes of unpleasant memories passed over his blind eyes similar to a mid morning's lingering fog. "Princess, ... Mom isn't with us anymore."
It was no secret that Elijah did not care for religion. He was not one to mention any deity names for any reason, not even to swear. But here, as a drowning sensation filled his chest the man offered it to the child in case she'd continued to have similar beliefs as her mother had. "She's with Tatara now." The kind God of Death's name felt foreign upon his tongue. But if it eased his daughter into the truth he was willing to use it. The idea of a God being there to embrace and care for the souls of the dead, the murdered, was a nice one after all.
"... I'm sorry, princess. She loved you so very much." Tears burned in his heavily scarred eyes. "Mom is in a better place now." He said, not personally believing the sentence but hoping it would bring some inkling of comfort, cushioning. Anything.

❊ Without you | I'm just a sad song ❊ Everything seemed to slow down infinitely. The few moments of silence seemed to never end as she stared at her father. He stopped breathing for a second and it was around this time that tears began to slowly well up in the corner of Stella's eyes before taking their sweet sweet time to slip down the young Kingsley's cheeks. She prayed he was just thinking of something else that would cause his reaction but she wouldn't be so lucky. Her father slowly spoke out the words that no child should ever have to hear. There were so many more questions that began swimming around in the girl's head but it was impossible to focus on anything. Her vision was as if she was swimming in water as her mouth was slightly parted. She didn't want to believe it but... there was nothing saying that she wasn't dead. Her father had no reason to lie or hide anything so there wasn't even that glimmer of hope that she could cling to.. Stella felt so empty. Her body felt so cold and she couldn't seem to make herself move. She sat there in silence, just listening to her father. Slowly though her feelings began to change as she slid a hand onto her father's knee. She wasn't sure what to feel sad about now. There was just so much more going on in her head now as she came into contact with her father. She shouldn't have asked so soon. That was a common thought but what was done, was done. It was too late now and it was probably something she should probably know sooner rather than later. The sadness brought about from hearing of her mother's passing quickly faded though and was replaced with the sadness for her father. It must have been so hard on him, losing her mom and Stella. She couldn't imagine what that was like. Stella wasn't exactly sure when it happened but in the blink of an eye she was in her father's lap doing her best to console him, she could cry later but right now her father needed help so she'd do whatever she could to do that. She did her best to wipe away his tears as she rubbed on his back. She did her best to move back slightly to sign to the lady, "It'll be okay." before quickly embracing her father once again. She wiped at her own eyes once more even though it didn't have much of an effect. Stella wished she could just talk, that would make everything so much easier and she'd be able to tell her father herself that it would be okay.. but that would never happen for her. It was only a dream. For the time being though, she could just hold onto her father and put everything she had into willing her father to feel better about everything. She squeezed him tighter and gave his face a kiss.

The feeeeeeeels @_@ I love theeeeeeem Nothin' else seems to hurt like the smile on your face The silence was crushing. He'd just told a little girl, his own daughter, that her mother was gone. Dead. No longer there to wipe away tears or give warm hugs. No longer there to hold a hand or to braid hair. The mother was not going to be present during high school dances, college graduations, to babysit the grandchildren. The child's mother was gone. She'd been stolen away from them by hateful humans with guns.
Of course receiving such news would not result in positive responses. That was obvious, yes. But there was a certain particular torture in not knowing of any response at all. Elijah's ears strained to hear so much as the softest hiccup in breathing or whimper. Alas, much like many aspects in his life, he was left in the dark. Elijah would have to sit in his personal darkness until either Stella or the translator would be merciful enough to fill him in. And he'd wait for it. Regardless if it felt like centuries were passing, he would wait patiently. This was not something to rush.
The moment the tiny hand came into contact with his knee, a calloused hand rushed to grasp it. Yes, they'd lost her mother but they had each other. And although Elijah had never been the Queen of the kitchen or the artist of hair braiding, he was determined to do everything he could to fill any holes left in Stella's life that would have been left empty by Serena's passing. Elijah would blink at the little girl climbing into his lap and --
Wiping away at the tears that had unknowingly escaped his lashes, Stella's other hand busied itself trying to ... to comfort him? "It will be okay." The translator would say in a quiet voice. Wide eyed Elijah's blind gaze stared into the back of his darkly tinted sunglasses' lenses. "I ..." The grown man's voice cracked as his arms wrapped around Stella, pulling her closer into himself. How was he so lucky to have such an extraordinary daughter? Her first response, even in the midst of receiving terrible news, was to think of others. Gods, Serena would have been so fucking proud.
Emotions soared as a pride unparalleled filled his chest. The kiss upon his cheek would garner one in return, upon Stella's forehead. "I know, princess. I know everything is going to be okay." The statement felt so true at the moment. In later hours, when he was unable to sleep with Stella peacefully snoozing beside him, curled up into his warmth, it would be further examined. Elijah would realize at that later time that he wasn't entirely sure if that was the case. Serena was a powerful woman and an incredible mother. Now it was just ... him.
There were fears that came with that realization. He now had to balance work with the little girl he'd been searching for for years. Almost a full decade. Was he going to be able to do this to the standard that was deserved? His little girl had lived out on her own in a horrifying and dangerously hateful world. She deserved nothing but peace and happiness for the rest of her days. Was he capable of at least closely hitting that mark? True, he had friends, Pathos his house assistant, remaining family in Cherche. But could he as a single father give his daughter what she deserved? It would be a topic that would keep him up until the late hours of the night. But for now, in this moment, the statement felt true.
"You don't have to be strong for me, Princess." Elijah would say, nuzzling into the girl's soft locks of hair. "You are allowed to be sad and cry if you need to. I'm here to hold you." But would reconsider his previous statement immediately after saying it. "We're here to hold each other. That's what family is. Neither of us have to be strong pillars by ourselves. We can afford to be weak sometimes because we can lean against each other. Okay?" His voice wavered in his last one-word inquiry. The last thing he wanted to do was rush through this subject. This was an important moment that needed to be handled with a delicacy.
