Granted, running jobs for the Black Market was a detestable business, and every day that Edwin was forced to take another job for them was a day that he would, inevitably, wind up owing another favour to someone - it seemed a cycle that he just couldn't manage to actually escape, no matter how much he wanted to. If he could have gone back several years and slapped his younger self in the face, Edwin probably would have.
But he couldn't deny that sometimes, just sometimes, working for the black market had it's perks. And this particular place, hidden away in the basement of an old building off Vistoso Port, was one of those particular perks. A seemingly non-descript office building, the basement had been reconverted by some interested developers with less-than-pristine pasts, they'd paid a surprising amount of money to build this little shooting place, which as far as Edwin understood had been 'appropriated' by some people higher up the food chain in exchange for letting more of their members use it. Personally, Edwin would have been amazed if the police didn't already know about it, but they didn't seem to care and Edwin had no particular reason to tell anyone else about it, as here was a place he could usually be left alone to practice.
The shooting range itself didn't look like much - the current keeper of the range didn't bother prettying it up except with a few magazines and some tasteless posters, otherwise it was primarily cement walls with only about four separate shooting sections and some ear-guards that had been used by god knew how many people. And yet, deceptively, the place was very clean despite it's bland look - the keeper cleaned the place regularly, the cement walls were thick enough to stop most sound escaping the room, and even better - there was quite a selection. Nothing that the military would have missed, but a surprising amount of police and civilian-regulated (mostly) firearms - from handguns to rifles and even a few shotguns. Edwin didn't ask questions and the keeper didn't bother providing answers, as long as nobody started being stupid. Edwin had seen one time someone had tried to hold up the place - there was still a spread of bullet holes left in the wall behind the second shooting section from the wall, the only imperfection in the walls left as a reminder.
Edwin only came occasionally - shooting things wasn't particularly one of his fonder moments. But his skills with a pistol were one of the few things that his father had left him before he'd passed away, and he'd be damned if he'd let that slip. Even if this was only a bizarre sort of memorial to his father, it was worth it.
As Edwin walked in, he nodded to the keeper who nodded back at him from behind a newspaper with some ridiculous title about bizarre events happening somewhere overseas - some weirdo who kept challenging people to death battles or something? It didn't matter. Silently, Edwin slipped on the earmuffs, put on the safety glasses hanging underneath them, rolled his shoulders back, and moved the target to about halfway down the range - not quite his maximum but fairly far out for his skill level.
Edwin smiled. "At least this'll help me let off some stress..." he thought as he took out his pistol, aiming down the line, and fired, taking careful aim between each bullet.

Vashti never really had an interest in firearms until her brother just a couple months ago stated that she would begin training with them. At first, she was very reluctant to begin, knowing well it was very unsafe for her to wield a weapon especially a gun. But Malikai stated it was for safety, she had to do it or she was going to no longer be allowed certain things. With a couple months of learning, she eventually got the hang of it. She was capable of loading and unloading a gun. Malikai showed her how to shoot and aim down a target perfectly. Granted, she herself didn’t perfect it, but she knew with some practice she eventually would be able to do it. Felici, Ethea was a dangerous city to visit if you were a magi but Vashti went against her brother’s words of warning and forced him to get her there so she could visit a shooting range. She had heard about it, with different people coming through the bar and spewing their secrets to her or babbling about thoughts while completely drunk off their ass. She got word of it being a decently nice shooting range so she chose to take a vacation trip there. Luckily, with the help of her brother’s trusty assistant manager, Felix. Entering the range, the first thing she noticed was how clean it really was. Shocked, she knew most ranges were dirty and unkempt. The next thing was how bland it was, boring yet satisfying. Not many people were here, maybe one or two but that was about it. As she wandered in, she noted the four private shooting sections and the ear-guards. Felix pointed out the wide selection of guns that they had and she smiled, showing a sign of happiness. Unfortunately, Vashti was not going to be using their items today. Felix had carried in a decently sized small suitcase and a pair of ear-guards along with safety glasses. Vashti nodded to the keeper who nodded back, eyeing her down what seemed like but once noticing that Felix was following her, he went back to reading his newspaper. Vashti chose the private section beside another individual and placed her safety glasses and ear-guards on. Felix set up the target so that it was about slightly halfway down the range and opened the suitcase, prepping her hand gun for her. As Felix did his own thing, Vashti took it upon herself to glance about, taking note of the other individual. She silently watched the man as he carefully aimed and fired between each bullet. He was calm and collected, smooth and elegant, which she just allowed a fake sign of pleasure take over her face. “Vashti, dear, come.” Felix stated, as the female turned and went back to her section and took a hold of the hand gun. The woman calmly allowed her shoulders to go back as she eyed down to target, lining up her target with the notch in the rear sight and began to shoot. She was careful in between shots, taking her time as she would take deep breathes before each shot, a couple bullets missing as a couple hit around the chest area of her target. “Very nice, Vashti.” Felix would comment, taking glances down at his phone as he really was not paying attention to the Magi which didn't really seem to bother the female as she minded her own business, taking a moment to glance over at the other target here and there. Edwin took a moment to clear himself out of the trance that he had found himself in. Despite the earmuffs, there was still a light ringing in his ears - he could never quite get used to that. Edwin had always wondered if he'd ever get used to using a gun - shooting targets, after all, was easy. Targets didn't move...or bleed. It was unnerving - the thought floated through Edwin's mind, unwilling, that one day he might have to use it to take someone's life - that was the entire reason his father had taught him how to use a gun in the first place. Of course, when he'd talked about it it had been under the balance of self-defence, and maybe that was so, but still...Edwin hoped he'd never have to find out if he could do it or not.
To try and clear away the unpleasant thought, Edwin took a deep breath in through his nose ("Always remember boy, if nothing else: breathe, focus and only then fire.") and out through his mouth, and as he did his vision wandered over to the next booth - where he couldn't help but be taken slightly aback for a split-second, noticing unmistakably a Magi in the booth next to him - he might have guessed she was just pale at first, having only glanced, but there was no mistaking after seeing those eyes, those blood-red, hungering eyes...
Edwin quickly looked away, forcing himself to focus on the target, breathing in again to try and calm himself. "Leave it be. She'll make her shots and then she'll leave." He forced himself to concentrate on the target as he brought it closer to him, focusing on the rings around the centre - as usual, he'd got none dead centre this time, though one hole just clipped the edge of the bulls-eye. Most of the shots were in the 8-9 rings, with a few in the 7 and one in the 6. Despite his lack of practice, Edwin could at least take some confidence in the fact that his shots were improving.
With a fluid, practiced motion, Edwin took out the magazine, placing the gun down on the nearby bench and carefully loading bullets from the nearby box of ammunition into the magazine, one at a time. It almost put Edwin back into a trance - at least until the magazine was reloaded. As he pushed a button the current target full of holes was taken away and in a few moments a new one free of holes was in its place. "Clockwork. Perfect." Edwin once again began carefully firing at the new target and trying not to think about how the centre of the target was almost the same colour as those blood-red eyes...

[googlefont=Open+Sans] i'm going to break you down [attr="class","firstfriend"] scare you, destroy you. ashti was good at aiming… It was just that she wasn’t use to shooting guns. She had just begun learning about them almost a couple months ago and it wasn’t like she was like the people who obsessed over guns. She didn’t practice that often and whenever she did, she would forget everything because she didn’t think she’d ever really use a gun. She was still upset with her brother for forcing her to learn about them. They were dangerous for something such as herself…
Now, Vashti wasn’t one for staring, but when she caught the boy in the other booth taking a glance at her, she couldn’t help but look right at him, blink then flash a smile to him. She couldn’t help it, she had to act nice right? She lifted her gun back up before shooting a couple more rounds into her target.
Obviously, she was hitting around the 8-7 rings, some hitting the nine but it wasn’t perfect. Most of her bullets were sitting within the 8-7 rings. Felix stood there, his eyes lazily glancing up here and there from his phone. It was as if the human was growing bored so chose to have his own little fun when he chose to instead focus his attention on the boy in the other booth.
Now, Vashti never grew jealous, but once she finished one of her magazines, she popped it out and turned to Felix. Catching his gaze, she quickly followed it with furrowed brows. Catching him staring at the boy, Vashti couldn’t help but smile, a fake one of course but her body was pumping full of jealousy at the fact that man that she brought was not watching her.
Placing her gun on her table, she popped out from her own booth and turned to stand just a couple feet away from the boy, watching him innocently. “My~. You have quite the hands don’t you? Able to make all those shots. It’s magnificent.” A game she loved to play. But none other, this was all just an act. Something she had to put on to look normal. As Edwin finally fired the last shot in the magazine (keeping in his head the count right up to the 18th shot), he was already grumbling to himself - he knew he'd lost his focus as he fired even before he'd fired the shots, and the target didn't prove him wrong - now most of the shots were in the 6-7 rings, which even for his relatively ordinary firing ability was below average. He couldn't help but wonder, if only for a split second, if it was because he'd wanted to subconsciously avoid that almost blood-red center...
At least, that was his mood before he heard a voice behind him. Fortunately he'd had lessons well drilled into him to the point they were practically subconscious reactions ("You never, and I mean never pull the trigger until you're ready to fire!"), so he'd already had his finger safely away from the gun - nonetheless, he still couldn't help but be surprised. He put the gun up on the bench and turned slowly. "Who the hell wants to talk to...oh. Great."
It was the magi girl who'd been firing in the booth next to him. The one with the blood-red eyes...which, now that he was focusing on her face properly, had deep black sclera as well. And just to add to the image, she had horns twisting out from the top of her head. And a tail. "Yeah, just in case she couldn't look any more like a comic book villain. All she needs now are freaking pointy fangs."
Edwin looked at her briefly, before turning his back to her to empty his gun again. "Lady, all you do is squeeze the trigger until there aren't any more bullets." He loaded some more bullets into his magazine, pointedly not listening to the magi even as he felt her eyes still staring into his back and trying to ignore the chill it sent down his spine. "Don't you have something else to look at?"

[googlefont=Open+Sans] i'm going to break you down [attr="class","firstfriend"] scare you, destroy you. ashti didn’t like showing emotions. She couldn’t anyways unless she truthfully meant it and most of the time she didn’t. It didn’t matter if it was rude or not, she didn’t care. Either get over the fact she isn’t impressed or upset or be a bitch about it.
Her eyes shifted to the target that now showed he was avoiding the red dot - the bullseye. Her eyes shifted right back to the male as a soft smile came to her lips once more. Red eyes looked to his hair in which she noted before looking back at his eyes. “Well, obviously. But some of us have shaky arms, you know?” she commented softly as she moved herself closer. Of course she didn’t move too close to cause discomfort, but their was already discomfort to begin with.
He turned back to his empty gun and loaded some more bullets into his magazine. Turning, the Magi glanced to the man she dragged along and he simply shrugged to her. She returned to looking to the man. A sly smirk came then left as she maneuvered her way back to her booth. Felix had reloaded her magazine for her and placed it back into the gun. Her fingers slid around the gun gently as she lifted it and held it eye-level. She pointed then pulled the trigger. One in the nine ring. She pulled it again. Second in the nine ring. Again. Third in the eight ring.
Her gaze shifted back to the male and suddenly her eyes had grown dull and her facial expression went completely blank. “Why do you suddenly shoot poorly? You had beautiful aim, near the bullseye. Now it is nowhere close.” She commented, hers glaring now as the dullness had left. She was hammering him, she wanted answers. He had looked and suddenly his aim went downhill. It bothered her so she began to fire off her gun until she couldn’t anymore. Of course aimed at her target but each bullet hit around the 7 ring or the 6th ring. A couple within the eighth ring. "Vashti," The voice threatened, glaring at the magi. "Simply curious, as a magi should be." Vashti said with a generous smile as she glanced to the male before looking to her gun, taking out the magazine and beginning to reload it. There were many things that could easily shake Edwin's fragile pride - sometimes it felt like a wonder that he clung onto it, considering the many times it came back to bite him. And yet really, it was one of the few things that truly felt like his own. So it was bad enough when he himself was forced to face his failures...but now to add insult to injury someone else had decided to start grilling him too, for reasons that escaped him, at least beyond her mere curiosity. "What, just because I don't have magical dead-eye accuracy now I'm some kind of curio? What is it about me that makes people not leave me alone? Do I need to get it written on a gods-damned shirt or something?"Perhaps it was the fear that made him furious at himself. Perhaps it was the magi constantly seeking to pry into his affairs like he was some kind of bug beneath her feet - either way, his typical grumpiness flared. He turned to face the magi with a sour look. "Well, I'm very bloody sorry that I don't live up to your professional standards or your goddamn curiosity. Why in the hell do you even care, lady? I have better things to do today than playing twenty questions, so if you've got some spiel about how I'm an awful human being for whatever reason it is this time than quit dancing around the point and just say it. I can't stand people that put on a goody-two-shoes act and waste my time anyway."Hopefully, either she'd take her 15 minutes to barrage him with reasons why he was a racist bastard that should be burned at the stake, or she'd be appropriately insulted and leave. Either way, at least he'd finally be able to get back to his shooting. Or maybe he'd just leave before he had to put up with nonsense from someone else... -- Tags: Vashti Ootari Notes: Sorry for taking so long, enjoy annoying my easily annoyed little human.

[googlefont=Open+Sans] i'm going to break you down [attr="class","firstfriend"] scare you, destroy you. ashti was expecting a gun to be pointed at her. Or at least a threat. Such things did not occur. Instead, the male turned to face her with a sour look.
Instead, she was met with the male questioning why she cared. He had better things to do so if she had something rude to say about him, to say it now. Her eyes shifted to the ground for a moment to flash a quick smile before returning her look to the male with a blank expression. She just stared as if she was listening and yes, she was, but she had already known what she wanted to say to him. Goody-two-shoes? Oh, if only he knew.
With a slight shift in her step, she let a smirk cross her lips as she maneuvered her way back around into his own booth. This time, the Magi had moved and placed herself inside his booth but was sure not to stand right behind him. “Do you often receive such hate from Magis?” The woman questioned first. She looked down to allow her fingers to trace her shirt lightly. “I do not bash on humans. It is improper. A mistake because then they can claim that I am trying to harm them and attempt to murder me.” She stated, her eyes not seeming to show any sort of emotion but she held a smile on her face.
She took a step closer, Felix keeping a close eye on her as she was just getting comfortable. “A goody-two-shoe act? Want to explain further? I do not believe I put on such an act,” She shifted in her footing as she turned swiftly on her feet, looking to Felix. “It is not a goody-two-shoe act, doll face. It is called being curious.” She let a small giggle escape her throat as she looked back to him. “But, if you ask me, you’re pretty cute for a human. You seem like a good guy." A lie, but how would he know. Her voice showed no way of lying to him or teasing, instead it had softened to an extent and she even did a short wink before moving over to her booth.
Would he take his leave or continue on with the game she was playing? | ✉ | it is okay, hun! Vashti is just teasing him at this point. |

Whoever this Magi was, she'd managed to do the one thing that Edwin never expected.
Edwin expected to push people away - it was almost an instinctive reaction, and one that he had no problem with. Occasionally people had even feigned to try and continue talking to him, most likely out of some sort of belief that they needed to be 'sociable', or whatever the hell that was. A cold stare had usually been enough to get those people to get the point across, that he just wanted to be left alone.
What she decided to do instead was attempt...charm?...leaving the young boy completely bewildered. Just her getting this close caused him to instinctively try to back away - though with the end of his stall right behind him, there was really nowhere else to go except pushing up slightly against the wall. Pinned between a rather dangerous-looking magi and an area where people actively were shooting into, for a split second Edwin literally couldn't decide what was worse. Though if she was planning to eat him, her continuing to speak at least indicated that she found something too amusing to do that immediately - who knew what at this point. Probably the fact that she was legitimately beginning to scare him, as angry as Edwin was at himself for realising.
But he got his answer soon enough - curiosity. Deep down, a tiny part of him was slightly impressed at someone who was willing to walk right into the unknown just because she was curious. Of course, she had the means of defending herself. The fact that she thought any non-Hunter could harm her seemed ludicrous to Edwin, let alone himself. "Curiosity? What's to be curious about? I like firing guns. It's..." Edwin stopped mid-sentence. What need did this magi have to find out his secrets? She could keep her damn curiosity to herself. "...well, it's none of your business why."
It didn't seem like she was really listening that closely anyway, as by the time he'd said the words she was moving back to her own booth. Edwin breathed a sigh of relief. But when she mentioned that he seemed like a good guy, the notion was so absurd that Edwin couldn't help but bark out a laugh, partly out of fear and partly out of amusement. "Cute? What are you blathering about? Either you're patronising me, or you're a moron. And quite frankly you're creeping me out way too much for you to be an moron." Edwin regretted the words the second they'd come out of his mouth. Even if she didn't decide to just flat out knock him on his backside, he realised he was probably still just playing right into her hands - regardless of anything else, she seemed like she was enjoying his reactions. With a concerted effort he forced himself to stand upright and go back to aiming at a new target that had been put up and trying his best to ignore her. With any luck maybe she'd finally gotten the point. Or maybe he'd just played right into the amusement she sought. Or hell, maybe she'd melt his blood from the inside out, who was to know? In any case, he decided that he wouldn't be staying for shooting many more clips, in case her curiosity became less...'pleasant'.-- Tags: Vashti Ootari Words: 542 Notes: I mean, in Edwin's back-handed and rude way at least he's recognising Vashti's intelligence...?

[googlefont=Open+Sans] i'm going to break you down [attr="class","firstfriend"] scare you, destroy you. hen Edwin chose to back himself up, pinning himself between her and his end of the stall, it only caused the curiosity in Vashti’s body to fuel her even more.
The female continued to hold a smile on her face. It never widened or lowered, it stayed the exact same as she watched the man. It only widened the slightest when she received the response she had been waiting for from the male. “You what?” She placed a hand to cup her ear, the smile finally falling as her brows furrowed. But he didn’t finish why he liked firing guns. It was none of her business and so the female just turned and moved to her stall. Felix had reloaded her gun and gotten her a new target set up and everything.
Vashti stating that he was cute and a good guy was just her way of pulling him right back into her. Her game was just beginning and the more he continued to respond, the more he was being dragged into it. She was not going to let him get away that easily either. Games were fun, right?
When he laughed, she could tell their was a mixture of emotions he felt from the laugh. Everyone had a certain way they laughed when they felt certain emotions. Such as fear, it was a shaky, half-assed laugh. One she knew all too well but not one he held. So when he spoke so openly, not holding back, it didn’t cause any type of feeling to rise out of Vashti.
Instead, the female held the gun and shot repeatedly. Their was no stopping until the magazine was empty. The gun was handed back to Felix who took out the empty magazine and replaced it with a full one and handed it back to the female. Vashti took it, holding it with both hands as she began shooting once more until that magazine was finished. With a smirk that coated her lips once more, she had destroyed the target that stood in her lane. As she relaxed her shoulders and looked to Felix who took her gun, he handed her her pair of red framed glasses. Placing them on her face, she wandered back over to the male's stall.
Oh no. Vashti was nowhere done with him. "You know, I was thinking," She began, "You said I was creeping you out, that was a first I've heard in quite a while." Vashti chuckled as she leaned herself up against the wall of his stall and stared at him through her red framed glasses. "Obviously I am no moron as you have played yourself into my web and now, at this point, I don't think I'll be letting you escape." The female cooed towards him softly as she tilted her head. "What are you feeling? Thinking? Wish to inform me? I'm quite curious as to of how you are feeling." | ✉ | this is shit im sorry BUT EDWIN YOU SO SMART |

Edwin's biggest problem with the magi had always been just how...unpredictable they were. The world of computers and of technology and of science had rules. You might not have known what they were, but with patience and dedication, you could find them out and then you could manipulate them to that advantage. There was something calming in trying to figure out the logic of the world around him, even when he knew he'd been born into a world that really didn't have any logic to spare.
But magi - the laws of magic, from what little Edwin had been able to glean of it, didn't seem to have any rules. Or if there were rules, there was no way he'd be able to know them without actually being a magi. Half of it seemed to be based on some form of self-belief, something that sounded like a hokey commercial from some telephone psychic trying to sell you what you wanted to hear. But with magi it granted them access to magnificent and terrible power - something that Edwin would never be able to manipulate or even mitigate himself. That was what frightened him of magi so.
And he had a sense that this particular magi, this almost demonic woman, knew that - or at least suspected it and basked in that power. The more Edwin tried to get away, the further she seemed to close in. Even though she seemed to stay in her own stall, it was as if her sheer presence would swallow him if he didn't run. But right as he was about to leave, the magi moved in front of him first, and her presence seemed to almost physically weigh him down to the spot. "She knows..."
The only saving grace was that she didn't at all seem angry, much to Edwin's confusion - if anything, merely curious, as if gazing at an animal and trying to figure out its behaviour. "So I am your experiment, then? Fine." For a second Edwin considered turning the gun on her, but what purpose would that serve? She'd have to know that he'd do it, and would probably just melt it in his hand. All it would do is give her the satisfaction, something that grated at Edwin's very soul. The only thing he could attempt to do otherwise was try and placate her enough to get her to go away.
"So what is it I can say that will make you leave me alone?" Edwin looked straight at her. "What exactly would make this little experiment humour you? Do I dislike you? Yes, but not much more than I dislike everyone. I don't like people in general, they're far too confusing. Do you want me to admit I'm frightened of you? Yes, I'm frightened. If you were so inclined, you could crush me with barely any effort, and right now I feel I'm only alive because you're somehow amused by me, and that's almost as annoying as it is frightening."
In a strange way, admitting it almost felt like a relief. Besides, what was she going to do with such knowledge? Lord it over him? He'd lived with it for years, this would change nothing. Tell other magi he was a bastard? They'd already have known. Kill him? At least he'd die feeling slightly less frustrated. "So can I go now? Or do you want to spend the next few hours spouting tired metaphors?"-- Tags: Vashti OotariNotes: 573 words. Hopefully this little glance into Edwin's psyche is intriguing, for better or for worse...

[googlefont=Open+Sans] i'm going to break you down [attr="class","firstfriend"] scare you, destroy you. xperiment? Oh no. No no. This was what she did for a living. Well, not technically but she had went through this type of thing. She was once an experiment. Rather she wasn’t one, she was used to play with. Was that the same thing? She was not quite sure as she stood leaned up against his wall. Make her leave him alone? Vashti’s eyes wandered to stare at him, her eyes eyeing the motions of his hands as he spoke if he made any. The way his eyes might shift or blink in consideration to what he was feeling. Blinking too many times? Eyes darting? Everything could be told by how the eyes moved or the sound of their voice. Was there a tremble? Perhaps a hitch? Something. She looked for anything.“You jabber on and on, you know?” She mumbled as she lifted her hand, her pointer finger would go to her mouth where she’d begin to chew on her nail.“Although. You aren’t an experiment,” she’d begin as she lifted herself from his wall and took only a few tiny steps until she was face to face with him. Crimson eyes stared deeply, the whites of her eyes now black only seemed to darken the color of her eyes. With a smirk that was fake but believable, her eyes glinted with something.“It is how you speak. How you move. The fear that radiates. Yes it is quite obvious you fear me but it isn’t just me. It is all magi, correct?” Her head tilted, brows furrowed as the look of question appeared on the magi’s face. Fake. Of course. But real enough to fool the man into believing she was curious. “I want to know more,” Vashti cooed gently. Her hand lifted to go and cup his cheek if he would allow it. If not, her hand would still reach out before retreating back to her side. Then, again, her arm would reach out as her fingers gently grazed his shirt. Emotions. She knew how to fake them. It was what probably caused those around her to fear her the most. She could go from smiling to holding nothing but a blank stare and not even show much for it. “What makes you fear me? Is it how I look?” Her hands lifted to take a grip of the horns on her head. At this point all emotions flooded from her face and she was left staring at him blankly. “Perhaps it is my eyes?” Her finger would point to the scleral tattooing and the crimson orbs. "Maybe it is my tail?" Her tail would flick out from the dress. The woman took a step closer so that her tail would flick, gently rubbing against his leg for a moment.
