Blessed is Arithelia, Mother of Magi. Blessed is the Inner Flame, eternally bright and warm as the sun. Blessed is the Tranquil Sea, ever formless and shifting. Blessed is the Solid Earth, firm and unbroken. Blessed is the Mending Hand, gentle and generous. -Jason Reed
Dagos was always an… interesting place. Not always in a good way, but the city of lights and glamour was never lacking in possible distractions. Jason remembered the brief stints in his wilder days when he’d still been a professional fighter. Sometimes a night on the town was good for the soul, if only to dirty it for cleansing in his prayers. That aside, Dagos was also one of the few places in the world that was relatively safe for his people. Hunters were a rare enough occurrence here and an underlying fear of underworld reprisals kept all but the most foolish of that cult from tracking prey without permission—it would cut into the profits certain circles earned via human/magi trafficking.
More importantly, there was a brother—and sometimes sister—here that could provide them with shelter whenever the need arose, so there would be no camping out under the stars for them tonight. A bonus was that he could finally buy his patron proper clothing—or at least something better than hand-me-downs. It was another of the cities more tasteful aspects that it tended to be a center for recent fashions and it would help the girl goddess blend in with her surroundings.
Jason gently rolled his shoulders as he shifted Arithelia’s placement to a more comfortable position. He’d placed the goddess there both for the sake of expedience and to better cement the lie that she was his niece (and because it was endlessly amusing to him).
“Well, I think that we should be able to find what we need here,” he told her. “Is there anywhere particular you would like to start?”

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] The means for transportation upon the shoulders of another had slowly begun to grow on her. She wouldn't admit it without the influence of heavier medications or alcohol, but it was indeed a fact. Ari missed being tall. As a deity the Great Arithelia often towered above mortals with ease. This wasn't always the case but when it was, Arithelia proved a full few feet taller than any mortal she happened to be conversing with. So here she was, in the form of a child, being graced the opportunity to be tall once again. It was nice.
"Hm? You think so?" Ari asked, glancing around. To be entirely honest the fallen goddess was still very much new to the whole selling and buying aspect mortals fiddled with. As a God she simply gained whatever she wished. As a fallen deity, those who cared for her during her weaker moments handed her what was needed. This was a new experience, yet again. My, her days were full of those recently.
"Ummm," Ari turned her head to and fro, taking in all the sights. "To be honest I don't really know. I've never done this before." It was so busy. People walking past with bags and purpose. "I guess ... where ever they have my size? All of those clothes look to large for me." Ari pointed to the right at a cluster of clothing racks that were deemed the Men's section. Indeed, if she wore anything from that area she would drown in them.
"... And maybe some shoes?" Ari would ask, knowing that the money that would be spent would not technically be hers. Glancing down to the beat up pair of sneakers the little girl would frown. "Every time it rains my feet get wet and makes me cold." After some more thought Ari would sigh and look downwards upon her travel companion. "Sorry. I don't really know how this works." Jason allowed himself the slightest of grins at his patron’s words as well as at his own ignorance. Of course, a goddess wouldn’t need to buy anything that she required when gaining something was a simple as thinking it into being. He wasn’t one to enjoy shopping, but he supposed that he could make an exception in this case. It was something that needed doing, so why not take some enjoyment in the task?
“It is understandable, little Ari,” Jason told her. “And it’s understandable, given what you’ve gone through in these past months.” He followed the pointed finger’s indicated direction and allowed his smile to grow marginally wider as his gaze fell upon the men’s section. “The task of keeping my eye on you is difficult enough without you suddenly disappearing into piles of clothing, so perhaps we should avoid those for now. I’m positive that we should be able to find something that fits. Although…”
He was silent for a time, long enough to gather his thoughts at least. How was one to organize their thoughts in a way that wouldn’t come across as . . . insulting? Though she appeared to be nothing more than a child, Arithelia was his patron goddess and was deserving of a level of reverence that few beings could boast. At length, he decided that the most direct approach would be the most appropriate for the situations.
Better to ask forgiveness than permission.
“… Thinking on it, we may have to find something in the children’s section.” Jason craned his neck as far as he could to show Ari the apologetic smile he wore. “It would be the easiest for your size.” Regardless of the reaction he received, the mountainous bulk of a man would transport the little goddess to the children’s section and lightly set her on the ground so she could peruse the clothing as she wished.

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] Those thin paled lips would purse to the side at the name used. It wasn't out of frustration or annoyance. No, perhaps the most accurate term to describe it would be playful vexation. The sort that displays through the duration of light hearted bantering. She knew her follower understood her origins as his patron goddess. Ari also accepted her situation that her visual impression was one of a child and not as the powerful Deity she once was. Appearances had to be kept when in public. She was among the mortals now and it was best to blend in as much as possible.
A smile would crack at the magi's comment on her being lost in large clothing. "I don't try to be difficult." Ari would reply with a similar tone. A blithe joking manner of speaking. The two had been each other's traveling partners for long enough that their conversations often led way to banter. Light jestering, gentle pokes at one another. After hours upon hours of walking by foot, it was hard not to honestly.
Sigh. "Yeah, I had a feeling." Ari responded as her smile slanted. There was alot she had learned from this experience of being fallen. All of it she had come to be thankful for. But humbling was definitely at the top of that list. Children's clothes. That meant sparkles, unicorns, sassy sayings that would make adults grin in passing upon reading them. "Fiiiiine." Ari would allow her arms to rest upon the top of the man's head as he began his way in the general direction of the children's departments.
Oh, she hadn't been incorrect in her fears. Pink and various bright colors screamed at her from the racks. It was slightly puzzling how such loud clothing could remain on the hangars. Surely they just wished to jump off them and be as loud as they visually seemed to. Movie characters from the most recent popular film were prominently displayed, causing a rise of a brow from the tiny goddess. The idea of wearing someone's face upon her body was not necessarily up there on the to-do list. "Hmm ... What do you think would work best with our 'current lifestyle'?" Practically nomads it was a good question to be asked. "I don't know much about different types of fabrics. What works best for the Summer, Fall, Winter. You know?" Jason rubbed his chin thoughtfully at the question posed to him. It’d been several years since he’d last gone shopping for clothes and his grasp on the concept hadn’t been as firm even then. He’d mostly just worn what seemed the most practical without much regard for fashion or material. In fact, Olivia would often take it upon herself to choose the better half of his wardrobe, so there never seemed to be a need for him to know much about the subject. He decided that he’d simply have to rely on common sense.
“Well, considering how often we travel, I’d suggest a durable fabric that won’t tear easily,” Jason said. “And it might be prudent to find a jacket or two for when fall and winter arrive.” Jason looked at the price tag attached to the clothing around them and frowned. He never understood what could possibly drive the price so high, but, again, fashion had never been among his interests.
“We might be able to find a few things in the clearance section that will fit you as well.” Clearance. Another thing that Olivia had thoroughly enjoyed about shopping. She’d often disappear for hours on end just to roam stores in search of clothing she could purchase for well below the original asking price. Sometimes she would even drag him along to carry the excessive number of bags she acquired during her visits. One such occasion had allowed him to purchase the jacket he now wore, which he wouldn’t trade for the world if it were offered to him.

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] Ari had been within the mortal realm long enough to know how currency worked. At least to a degree. The concept of giving paper and circular bits of metal in exchange for the goods wished for was one she had witnessed numerous times by now. What evaded her however was having a grasp on expensive versus cheap. Yes, currencies shifted from country to country. Some asked for five hundred yen for something simple, another asked for five gold pieces for the same item.
Even in Ethea one large item could cost less 'money' than a small one. So, overall, whenever price could possibly be discussed or, say, glanced down to from her seating on a pair of broad shoulders, there was clearly a disconnect of understanding. A simple blink would be her only reaction to seeing that higher price tag for a child's article of clothing.
"Clearance?" Ari would ask as the man began to walk their way in said direction. Peering up from the land of sparkles, bright pinks and teenage boy heart throb t-shirts the fallen deity's eyes would eventually see their apparent new promise land. Red everywhere. The red was eye catching even at their current distance, a hue displaying urgency all the more as they continued closer. "What is 'clearance'?" Red price tags. Red stickers. Red balloons. All of them proclaiming that same mystery word.
Ari's head would tilt in soft curiosity. "Is it a holiday?" Balloons were usually around for holidays, weren't they? They certainly weren't often apart of daily life. What did the mystery land of Clearance offer that was so worth celebrating? Jason smirked. One might’ve thought that there was some great emergency brewing given the large quantities of red present. He supposed there was in a manner of speaking, though the only danger was missing out on a chance to acquire clothing at a hefty discount. If one were to have asked his wife, she would’ve adamantly insisted that there were few things of greater import; she wouldn’t have been the only one given the sharp increase in population.
He mused upon the question as he walked, searching his memory for the simple explanation Olivia had given him. “Clearance is something that stores do when they wish to be rid of items that are either damaged or simply out of the current style or season,” he explained. “They need to clear the space for more products but still want to make a profit, so rather than give them away they hack the prices to draw customers in. It’s fortunate for us because it will spare our funds for the trip.” Indeed, the meager donations other brothers and sisters gave them couldn’t last for very long and they needed to make every cent count. They could live off the land and sleep under the stars, but that wouldn’t be acceptable when Ari eventually fell ill again—an occurrence the monk had come to expect regularly by this point. Money needed to be saved for medicine and proper logging in the event one of his siblings couldn’t afford to house them; the thought made his tail writhe impatiently under his jacket.
Jason pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind and focused on the task at hand. A quick scan of the area alerted him to a few racks that were underpopulated for the moment. He decided that would be as good a place as any to start and made his way over. “Let me know if you see anything you might like.”

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] "Ohhhhhh." The sound of epiphany made a nearby single father grin in recognition. He heard that sound once a day with his toddler nowadays it seemed. Ari would smile back, unaware of what the gentleman was finding humorous and would return her gaze to the sea of red stickers. "Less money for more or less the same product then." The little fallen goddess would shrug her shoulders. "I don't mind wearing last season's whatevers. This will work very well for our purposes." Ari nodded but inwardly would contemplate. It was a simple request but one filled with many unknowns. Let me know if you see anything you might like. What did she like? Mortal clothing thus far had been given to her among a collection of what was available. Jeans, shorts, sneakers, hand-me-down's from other mortal children growing. But now this was an opportunity to pick something because she saw something that inspired her or showcased her personality and ... Ari didn't have much an idea what that entailed. Nevyne was always so stylish ever dream they met in. Her mortal loyal ones tended to wear articles that proved to frame themselves rather pleasantly to the eye. For Arithelia she's never quite considered it. Her natural form, if one could call it that, was one that shifted constantly. More often than not the Great Arithelia had not bothered with coverings but just well placed longer hair. That wasn't so much an option in the mortal realm. What did she like? And possibly more importantly (for some reason), what was she going to wear for Nevyne's video game visit? As these thoughts swirled and hummed behind those delicate features, Ari's eyes would eventually fall on something in the far distance that made her pause. "... I ... I think I like that?" The fallen deity would point in the direction of a rack with faded heart tags and displays. Valentines from last year. Goodness, it was Fall now. No wonder they were trying to push these out the door. "These are kind of ... cute I guess?" Ari would say with a tilt of the head and a leaning forward as Jason would make his way over. "They don't have pictures of teenage boys on them at least or cartoons that I know nothing of." Blink blink. "The heart is a more or less universal symbol, right? A happy one?" There were frills and ribbons. Not necessarily something she'd ever worn before. But then again, she didn't have much experience with clothing at all, period. "I ... I kind of like that I think." And would point to a dress. For reasons unknown her cheeks tinted lightly with a blush. "I don't know how well it would do in heavier weather but I think I kind of like that." Jason suppressed the urge to laugh with some small success, though a wisp of a grin pulled at his lips. Goddess or no, Arithelia was amusingly adorable in her ignorance regarding matters of mortal life. It was endearing in the same way as a child learning some previously unknown factoid. In either case, she understood well enough now and they could start finding her some better clothes.
He waited until Ari pointed in the direction of… Valentine’s theme clothes? Gods, that was from last year! Even Jason was amazed to see those clothes on racks in any store, let alone one on the Dagos shopping strip. Still, he supposed that it was a lucky break for them and he couldn’t argue with Ari’s reasoning. He made his way over to the out of season rack and picked out a few articles the tiny goddess indicated.
“I think so, yes,” Jason said. “It’s meant to symbolize love and things of that nature. Olivia was fond of forcing me to wear something with a heart on it whenever Valentine’s came around. I think she liked seeing her large, intimidating mountain man in cuddly outfits at times.” In fact, she’d always tease him about it right before offering a cheeky wink and a kiss.
Gods, he missed that woman.
Another pointed finger alerted him to a dress his tiny goddess favored. It was with a critical eye that he examined the garment. He couldn’t imagine that it would be very effective at keeping out the cold, though it seemed Ari recognized that. It wasn’t expensive and he wouldn’t deny his very own mother a reasonable request, but he still turned a questioning gaze up to the goddess perched on his shoulders.
Jason blinked. “Are . . . are you blushing?” He chuckled. “Why are you blushing? Thinking of wearing the dress for someone in particular?”

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] Blink.
Ari's stare would turn downwards. There was her traveling companion chuckling up to her. "Am I?" The little girl would ask, a hand rising up to gently feel her cheek. Indeed, it was warm to the touch. It was a realization that was confusing. Concerning honestly. She wasn't one to blush often unless Ari was running a fever. And she didn't suspect she was. Ari didn't feel like she was.
It wasn't until Jason finished his questioning that the tiny fallen goddess would start. "W-wah?" The question seemed to almost have a physical force that effected her. Almost as if it had booped into her. Her balance would falter momentarily before she'd sway back into a safe posture. Perhaps even with some assistance from the earth magi whose shoulders she sat upon.
"No!" She would exclaim before remembering that they were in public. Though her voice hadn't been immensely disrupting, it had only garnered the attention of the previously mentioned single father shopping for his son, her next "No" was stated in a much softer volume. "No, it's nothing like that. This is just -- new for me. I'm not used to this process." Any red hue that had been present earleir was now only rosier.
Of course in the back of her mind the question still rang. Was it true? Yes, Ari battled nervous butterflies in her stomach occasionally when the topic of Nevyne visiting the mortal realm came to mind. But that was just because she was afraid Nevyne's visit would pale in comparison to all of the kindness and hospitality that the Great Muse had shown her. But that was all. Surely.
Following this train of thought Ari would continue explaining her physical appearance to her loyal one. "This is the first time I've ever been asked to pick out clothing. And because of my current size I can only pick from childish designs. I guess it's just ... just different. Maybe a little embarrassing." The wispy grin Jason wore became an honest to gods smile as Ari fumbled her own words in search of an explanation. He leaned forward slightly when he felt the hints of the small goddess swaying back at an uncomfortable angle. The was no stopping the soft chuckle emanating from deep in his chest after that. Jason looked at the father across the way and gave him a bemused shake of the head.
“No need to be embarrassed, Little Ari,” Jason said. “I’m sure that your friend will enjoy whatever you chose to where.” There was a mildly teasing tone to his words. He was well aware that Arithelia had made some manner of plans with another of her kind and he suspected that it had something to do with the small one’s embarrassment. As a matter of fact, he could practically sense the rising nervousness in her, and he was no zero magi; it was more along the lines of pure intuition from a man that once experienced firsthand. The was sure that his stomach was doing backflips into his esophagus the first time he saw Olivia.
“You’ll be fine,” Jason said reassuringly. “Just act as you always would and everything will go smoothly. Trust me when I say I know.” There was something oddly amusing about giving dating advice to his own goddess. So many mortals merely thought of the dieties they followed as all-knowing and all-powerful beings; his journey with Arithelia thus far had taught him that they were nothing of the sort. At least, not in the traditional sense. They were more like their followers than perhaps even they themselves knew.

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] In her quieter and sadder moments, a mortal referring to her as "little Ari" would bother her. But so intune had she and her loyal one become it seemed, that he knew exactly when he could state such a petname for her. Today, at this moment in a shopping mall, there was no ill or hurt emotions harbored from the adjective. It was never meant as an insult when Jason spoke them. They were terms of endearment. Soft precious words and his goddess understood this.
Tiny hands would wring themselves as her facade was apparently seen through. He knew she was worried. It was so interesting to have a mortal in her presence who could see through to her so easily. "She's just always been so courteous and ..." The word was hard to come by but it eventually came. "Fashionable." Ari sighed, knowing for sure he knew exactly what she was anxious about. "Nev reigns in the realm of dreams. She's so imaginative and artistic. It's always so breath taking ... I guess I'm just worried that she might be disappointed in comparison?"
The truth was told in soft tones, those iridescent eyes glancing downwards to her friend and traveling companion. It was an oddity, having the Deity looking for comfort from the mortal believer. But it was an arrangement that had become more familiar and less belittling with each passing month. "You think the dress will be good enough? Even though it's kind of childish?" “I imagine that reigning over the place where the only limit is the heights of one’s imagination would lead to an impressive level of creativity,” Jason mused. “Especially when she helps to create the dreamscapes of so many others.” He wasn’t so arrogant as to believe a goddess such as Nevyne would take any true interest in one such as himself, but surely there were others that could claim such fortune. Arithelia, certainly, but surely the teachings of her faith held true and She took interest in the happenings of mortal dreams. It was something that held some sway one Her chosen realm.
Jason’s expression knit into an understanding smile. “I don’t think that it will matter to Her nearly as much as your company. Spending time with you would be more than enough for Her, I’m sure. Gods know that it certainly was for Olivia. I was usually wearing nothing more spectacular than sweatpants and a tee shirt when we were together.” Usually because they were training together, but that was beside the point.
“I think that we might have enough clothes for the moment,” Jason continued. “Now, we should probably go about finding you some new shoes to replace these.” He patted the ruin that currently dressed Ari’s feet. One could tell just by looking at them that they were worn well past what should’ve been practical. The fact that they hadn’t fallen apart by now was nothing short of miraculous to him and he thanked their good fortune.

why did you allow me to fall from the stars? إلهة 女神 θεά 여신 ديوي देवी אֵלָה [attr="class","windyscarlet"] Iridescent eyes watched on as the man picked up the tiny dress and would add it to what was in his arms. They'd been quite successful in the grand scheme of what today's goal had been. The amount of clothes that could be held in one mighty arm of Jason's was more than enough to replace all of the worn hand-me downs she'd been wearing since she'd first fallen. It would be nice to have clothes that fit her current form more precisely. Not to mention have clothes that were appropriate for every season, especially the colder ones. It was almost cruel humor that Ari had never once felt so much as a chill back when she was the reigning deity of ice and snow. But now she found herself shivering at the slightest of breezes now.
The earth magi's words of wisdom were coming from personal experience. A pleasantry of warm memories. Ari didn't need to tap into his mind to recognize that. It was represented in his tone. His reflections. A "you're right" would be expressed through a nod of her head. He tended to be. A mother's pride you could call it. Or a god's pride. Take your pick of terminology.
"I think so." Ari would agree. The next sentence would be met with a sigh of relief. Thank goodness that was still on the agenda. Without a real grasp on mortal currency Ari wasn't sure if they'd reached their 'budget' with the pile of clothes in one arm. Luckily that didn't seem to be the case. Oh yes, we were a fan of this clearance. "Yes please." Shoes that were comfortable AND kept out the elements?
"Do shoes have 'clearance' too?" Ari would ask as the set of shoulders she sat upon turned 'round and set course for the shoe department. "Or is that just a clothing tradition?" Blessed is Arithelia, Mother of Magi. Blessed is the Inner Flame, eternally bright and warm as the sun. Blessed is the Tranquil Sea, ever formless and shifting. Blessed is the Solid Earth, firm and unbroken. Blessed is the Mending Hand, gentle and generous. -Jason Reed
“I wouldn’t doubt that they did,” Jason said. “I’ve found that if you can think of something you could buy, then it likely has clearance or some other sale for it.” Oddly enough, shoes were one of the few things Jason stayed aware of when it came to deal hunting. Many of the students that attended his dojo came from poorer families and couldn’t easily afford to buy new footwear every few months. It’d become something of a personal mission for him to find the best shoes for the lowest prices and purchase them for his less fortunate students. The tactic earned him more than a few loyal friends along the way, and those friends brought in more of their own friends to begin training.
Jason easily made returns on his investment each and every time.
He followed the signs hanging from the ceiling or perched atop isles until the pair found themselves in the shoe section. Again, Jason headed towards the children’s section on the hunt for something that would fit Ari’s feet. “First things first; we need to know what size shoe you wear,” he said. Jason searched around for one of the small benches at the end of the isles and sat Arithelia down on the first free one. He pealed back the tongue hoping to find the size only to discover that the text had been rubbed away almost completely. Just how long had Ari been wearing these shoes?
Luckily, there was a Brannoch device under the bench. Jason grabbed it and would carefully remove Ari’s shoe and place her foot against the metal to take her measurements. “Well, you aren’t flatfooted, so that one less thing to worry about. As for what you have to choose from…” He cast a thumb over his shoulder to indicate his suggestion. “…something from over there would be the safest option.”
