Law and Order Chapter 1: The Interview
Excellent. Come to the Temple District, Café du Panthéon, next Tuesday at 3:15. We'll conduct the interview there. - Dr. Josephine Mathea The Message had appeared in your inbox not long after you replied to the wanted ad. The Temple district wasn’t particularly busy on a Tuesday afternoon; perhaps that was the point of the time and day. The usual art merchants and stalls that littered the main road to the temple were gone, only one or two really popular locations able to open each day of the week. Café du Panthéon was on the main square in the center of the district. The Café of the Pantheon, the bold choice of name seemed to have paid off, the café had four stories, outdoor and patio seating, and a sun room as the top floor. Even on this dull day the first floor was still tree-quarters of the way full. ”Welcome to Café du Panthéon.” the host said with a thick ethean accent. The man was a pure bred ginger, flaming red curly hair, and freckles on every inch of skin. His nametag told you his name was Percy, and the wrinkled uniform told you that he clearly did not care for this job. ”Would you like open seating or to be seated at one of the upper levels?” he didn’t even look up as he talked; his attention was on the computer screen, flipping through the display deciding which server was next in rotation. Only upon being told that you were here for Dr. Mathea, did he raise his head to look. ”Ah, follow me then,” he said, still no emotion in his voice. ”Dr. Mathea has reserved the fourth floor for her meetings today.”Percy led you to the escalator and up to the top floor to a set of doors. There was a single chair placed to the side. Depending on when you arrived, early or on time, the doors would be closed, another interview currently ongoing, ”Wait there and you can go in once the guy before you is finished.” At 3:20 the doors burst open as a man stomped out. His face was fair, his eyes a brilliant blue, and his hair was tidy and neatly combed. However his attitude spoke quite differently from his appearance. ”Mother Fudging tree hugging female dog.” he muttered just loud enough to be heard by… everyone, clearly he had problems with cursing. Or we broke the pg-13 rating and had to edit him out. ”What type of questions were those?! Dumb... meany doesn’t know anything. Screw this. I don’t need this.” he kept cursing as he stomped down the escalator, in a hurry to get out of there. “Sorry you had to see that.”The voice came from the doorway. There stood a beautiful woman with long black hair and holy shit her boobs were huge, and big blue eyes, with holy shit her rack was massive wearing a long white formal dress, pearl earrings, silver bracelets on her left arm and tall black heels. Oh she also had huge… tracks of land. She laughed as she said “That fool was by far the most boring and uninteresting interview I’ve had today.” She turned and went back inside the room calling back with a “Come inside. He’s wasted enough of our time already.” The walls were artificial glass, allowing sun to pour in from the west side, but without any of the glare. She reached a table in the center of the room before turning around and stretching out her hand. “I’m Doctor Josephine Mathea.” She sat down promptly after an exchange in greetings, and proceeded by handing you a menu. “Would you care for a drink before we get started?”

»Diya whistled long and low at the sight of the café. She didn’t go to the temple district often and places like this were usually not her scene. But she was willing to go through a lot of abnormal steps today to make sure this went well. When getting ready in the morning, the voices of her moms played in her head: Brush your hair, iron your labcoat, are you really wearing that shirt underneath? Ay, habibi, put on a nicer blouse! Put on perfume, you smell like liquor! Fortunately her mothers had sent her plenty of care packages over the years, including nicer clothes. The labcoat, however, was non-negotiable.
The request was vague, but interesting. Exploration, danger, fame and money? Sign her up! If she had to put on a nice show to land the job, hell, that was fine. Whether or not she’d remember to keep herself in check, however, was up in the air.
She whistled again when she stepped inside. Damn, if she’s meeting people in a place like this, the pay must be better than expected. She had to blink a few times; did she hear him right? She reserved an entire floor in this fancy-ass place? She was uncharacteristically silent as she followed the apathetic host up and into a seat, right on time (for once in her life).
She had a little bit of time to collect herself. For posterity, and with Ami’s help, she prepared a semi-decent portfolio of her achievements and transcripts, including the materials from the trip to Mungu Island. Gods, Ami… she’d be proud of her for actually looking presentable and being on time. Diya couldn’t even figure out why this vague request interested her so much. Maybe because it felt like straight out of a childhood story: Go and adventure! Explore ruins! Fight danger! Gold and fame! She smirked at herself. Being an adult was a lot less exciting, but Mungu taught her that there was still a lot of “adventure” to be had out there.
The door slammed open and her eyes went to the… charismatic man responsible. She couldn’t help but laugh; not the awkward laugh of someone who was uncomfortable, but the confident, mocking one that said ‘Get a load of this ridiculous asshole.’ If she were more self-aware, she’d have recognized the hypocrisy, but as it was, he looked like a fool and she got some entertainment out of it.
Her laughter tapered off quickly when her eyes hit the source of the lovely voice. Holy crap, her tits were huge! Damn, and here she expected some old fogey or antisocial dweeb. Instead, she got a total babe. Now she definitely had to land this one.
Still, for all her faults, Diya was hard to catch off-guard, and maintained her confidence with a smile. She raised an open hand in front of her. “No worries; always nice to start the day off with some amusement, yeah?” She laughed again at her assessment of him as she obeyed the doctor’s command to follow. “Really? He struck me as such an interesting gentleman, too.”
Diya grasped the doctor’s hand (wow so soft) firmly and gave her a shake with a nod. “Hadiyya Nejem, Runic Student, Master level,” she said. It was the best title she had at the time. “But I go by Diya, usually. Nice to meet you, doctor.”
She followed suit and took her seat. She tried her best posture, but the bit of a slump was never really going to go away. She took the offered menu with a smile. Drinks! Now there was a relief. “I would, thank you.” Her eyes lit up after a bit of scanning the menu with a light hum. “Ay, no way; they have Surajan imports! It’s been too long since I’ve had a good qahwah1 with Desert Rum.” Hopefully, it’d be halfway decent. She was pretty convinced from her years her that Etheans had no idea how to brew good coffee.
She decided to wait for the doctor to start before saying anything after her order. She wanted to hear a bit before going off and asking questions in the dark. And try as she might, her gay little heart overrode her brain and her eyes would glance at the woman’s… land. Though it wasn’t terribly hard to stay focused on her face, either; she was a good-looking woman, through and through. It would keep a light smile on her face throughout the interview.

The doctor’s eyebrow rose from the introduction. Master Rank? she thought. At her age? Incredible. After handing Diya the menu she leaned back on the cushioned chair and crossed her legs. Her posture remained upright and professional, but still relaxed and calm. The Doctor studied the girl in front of her. The lab coat was an interesting thing to wear to a job interview that was for sure. But it clued her in on a few things, Diya was a creature of habit and she probably had a fondness for science. Josie gave a small laugh when Diya chose her drink. “About time someone chose a real drink. I’ve had nothing but tea all afternoon. “ she rose her left hand to signal the waiter who was charged with serving them. As the blonde man came over she gave him their order, The doctor gestured for him to take Diya’s order first. “And I’d like a bottle of Pinot Gris. Thank you Kyle.” she said giving the waiter a charming smile. The Waiter was unfazed by neither the smile nor the pair of cantaloupes before him. ”A whole bottle already?” he said with a smile, ”That last one must have been quite the character. Ha-ha I’ll put that in right away”“I love Kyle.” she said as she watched the cute blonde walk away. “I come here often, and request him each time. The gay ones always know how to treat a lady.” she gave a laugh but returned her attention back to Diya. “But, Until he comes back with our drinks, How about you tell me about yourself." her tone was friendly and nonthreatening, but somehow with her posture and the confidence she seemed to ooze from every pore of her body you could tell she was the one in charge. “From the accent and the drink of choice, I assume you’re from Suraja?”The interview questions began with probably the most common and most annoying of questions. The goal was always to get a good feel for the person, how they talk about themselves, get their backstory, and get a good guage on their personality. As far as interview questions went, this one had no right answer. It was to see if the doctor could work with Diya.

»Diya grinned at that. Finally, her alcoholism was doing her some good rather than getting her into trouble. She nodded with respect at the doctor’s order; any woman who could pound down an entire bottle during her workday was a woman worth getting to know.
“Born and raised,” she said, her voice and chest swelling with pride. “Only moved here to study at the University, around five years ago. Which I had more chances to visit home, yeah? Not enough sand here for my taste.”
She laughed lightly at her own lighthearted conversation. Honestly, she felt relaxed around this woman, which was not what she expected from an interview in the fanciest damn café this side of Felici. But someone who drank and laughed at angry men? Those are the people Diya liked to spend her time around. She heard Ami’s voice in her head, lecturing her (and rightly so) to sit up straight and be somewhat professional, dammit. So Diya adjusted her posture, and folded her hands casually in her lap.
“Ah, not much to say about myself before that, yeah? Just another orphan kid from a Surajan shanty-town who was too curious for her own good and would never make anything of herself, according to most.” She shrugged with a grin. “Proving people wrong is a hell of a motivator, yeah? Did well enough in school that the University noticed and I enrolled as soon as I could. Tougher than I expected, but that never slowed me down before, ay?”
The smile never faded, and she had no trouble maintaining eye contact with the doctor the entire time (aside from the occasional drift downwards…). “Been putting the University back on the map in sciences since year one, yeah? Spend most of my time in a lab, you probably figured out; guess my curiosity turned out to be a good thing after all, ay? Always looking to find answers to my questions and trying new things. Been getting out of the lab more and more lately, though; ever since I helped take care of things on Mungu Island I’ve been itching for fieldwork, yeah?”
If the drinks came, she’d waste no time taking a sip, then nodding in appreciation. Her face would light up with a wide smile. “First place in Ethea that gets this drink right! Might need to come around here more often. Compliments to the bartender, yeah?”

Dr. Mathea sat back with her arm propping up her head as she listened to the girl before her. She displayed a soft smile as she took in her interview. She didn’t just pay attention to what she said, but also how she said it, what she did while saying it, and which words she chose. From this short introduction and the common use of “yeah”, she could see that Hidiyya was probably not the best at formal situations. However, she was good with eye contact and certainly had confidence in her abilities. The drinks came right as Diya got to the part about the university. ”Thank you Kyle” she said, picking up the full glass in front of her and taking a sip. However, she didn’t turn her attention away from the person in front of her, there was still observing to do. ”hmhm. Definitely. This is the best café this side of the city.” she said with a chuckle in response to Diya’s comment about the coffee. As Diya continued about her recruitment to the University, Josie was even more impressed. Seems like Diya was not just a student, but also a scholarship one at that. So clearly she had the intelligence for the job. But did she have the creativity to match? Pleased with how it was going so far, the Doctor finally pulled out her tablet and began taking notes. ”You were on Mungu?” she said with surprise and curiosity in her voice. Field experience. Great. We’ll need that. she took her mental note before adding her own part of the story. ”I was in Wuld when I heard. The world has gotten a lot more dangerous these past few years. Magi Terrorism, Zombies, now Spirits?” She paused to take another sip of her wine. ”That’s why I’m searching for someone with experience in combat for my assistant. Can’t be too careful, yeah?” she threw a wink as she mimicked Diya’s signature sentence ender. If asked more about what the job entails she would give a giggle and say ”That’s need to know until I’m 100% sure you’ve got the job.””So I guess My turn then.” she said, ready to give her short introduction. ”I was born here in the temple district, grew up, went to school, and graduated from the university. However, The University just didn’t have the field I wanted. So I got my PHD at Vahrukt University in Archeology with another degree in ancient Theology.” She stopped there. She couldn’t go further without really hinting what they were doing. So this would have to do. ”Okay~ Next question!” she said with a trill, scrolling down her tablet. The next question was supposed to be “why do you want this job” but diya had just finished saying that she wanted more fieldwork. Hmm. Better rephrase the question…”What are your goals? And how do you think this job will help you further them?”

»Diya took another blessed drink; gods, she wasn’t kidding! The drink was probably three times as much here as it would be anywhere else, but maybe as a treat to herself she’d return sometime.
“I was,” she confirmed. She tilted her head slightly as Dr. Mathea continued. Usually she was wary of people who called out magi specifically, but there was no denying that the terrorism existed; part of her wanted to applaud them for taking a stand against a shitty authority, but in the end she couldn’t abide by actions that ended up hurting innocents. Explosives weren’t picky things, after all. There was also the mention of zombies, which was still a mystery that bugged her. She laughed at the doctor’s good-natured mocking; it was always nice to talk with someone who wasn’t a stuck-up prick.
“Ay, you’re right,” Diya agreed. “Those spirits… gods, they killed so many. I’m just glad me and Taran were able to stop it, even if it did take some quick thinking and creative use of Pull runes. And those zombies in Camlorn? Still trying to figure out what went on there, ay? Hard to get some concrete answers with that one.”
She nodded to the doctor, and she went on about herself. She smiled. Archeology and Ancient Theology, huh? Gods, this was like some movie shit; if she was only moderately interested before, she was definitely in now. “I understand that,” she said with a low chuckle. “University could use more focus on other subjects. I’m making them put more effort into the sciences, whether they want to admit it or not, ha!”
Next question, okay. She took another drink and listened carefully. She thought it was going pretty well, so far! She tapped her finger and hummed as she considered the question. It… was kind of hard to tell, given that the doctor wasn’t exactly forthcoming with the details. But eh, she was winging the interview so far, so she decided just to be blunt, as usual.
“Well, I said I wanted to get out there and experience and learn new things, and that’s a lot of what caught my interest, yeah? There’s a lot out there, past the walls of labs and schools; going to Camlorn to investigate zombies and Mungu to stop killer spirits reminded me of that. Even learning history is interesting, yeah? Would rather be the one people read about than the one learning from someone else’s journey. Guess you could say I’ve got something to prove, ay?” She laughed at herself. It sounded funny to word it like that. “Going from the little nobody orphan from a Surajan shack to the woman who was part of some big discoveries and solved some tough answers? That’s my goal, right there. And this job? I get a good feeling from you, Doctor; I think this is the right opportunity to help get myself out there; broaden my horizons, yeah? Don’t see offers like this everyday.”
She paused for another drink and offered a small shrug. “Sounds pretty dramatic to put it all like that, I guess, but I’ve got curiosity that won’t quit and motivation to do something about it. Hope you weren’t expecting I just wanted this job to pad a resume or something like that, yeah?” She offered the doctor a grin and waited to see what she made of all that rambling.

Is that Ambition, or bravado? She thought to herself as Diya talked. Ambition I can use. Bravado gets people killed. I guess we'll soon find out... The doctor typed a few things onto her notepad, her fingers typing faster than you'd think one would be capable with one hand. One by one she wrote the answers next to the questions she had prepared for the interview, making sure each one was at least somewhat fair. Though, being honest, most have yet to have any notes taken; they weren't worth the effort. Ambition, Testing Self, FameShe tapped the side of the tablet, juggling on if there was anything else she was missing. And as Hidiyya finished up, she was given one more word to jot down, ending it with a question mark. Curiosity? It was a slight pause before she got all of the thoughts in order. "Oh But of course not, That was honestly a good answer, given the lack of information. Bravo." It wasn't the best one she's gotten, No. One interview had actually been smart enough to research her, find out her motivation and deduce the job. Then he gave the reason why he wanted it. It was scary smart detective work, but the creep factor made him a definite NO. "This is where the Tricky questions come into play." She said, Taking a sip of wine and shifting her position to a less stale one. "Now. First up is an Odd ball, and do be Completely honest. Not a fan of gray areas in this. What are your views on gods? The University likes to push its views on its students but I want to hear your own."She would listen and jot her notes down. Her face would not give away if Diya gave the right or the wrong answer. And there was, in fact, a wrong answer. This was probably the first question that had a real option of failing. And a lot of people today had given her the wrong answer, or one too vague to give her confidence. At least the next one had a bit more thought to it. "If a locked Door stands in your way. What do you do?"

»She nodded and took a sip of her drink. Gods, it was good. “Thank you,” she said. At least her winging it seemed to be going well thus far. Maybe she’d have looked more into the good doctor and her field of study if she’d seen the ad sooner. As it was, she hardly had time to get a portfolio together and look halfway presentable. She had nothing to rely on now but her resume and her social skills (And if most of her family knew that, they’d say she’s doomed).
She stretched her neck and sat up, leaning forward on her hands with her elbows on her legs. Tricky questions, alright, bring it. She thought she was ready, but it took her a bit by surprise, her furrowing brows giving that away. The gods? She wasn’t used to people asking about them in the Uni.
She did, however, catch the way she said the Uni ‘pushed its views on its students.’ Given that she went to the Uni, and the location of the café in the midst of the temple of the gods, she could guess at the “wrong answer.” She hoped that was right, because it went with her own views.
“I’d be a pretty bad science student if I ignored evidence and dismissed theories,” she started. “Personally, I’m sure they exist. I mean, magic exists, right? Spirits, too. There’re too many people having encounters and too much history for me to go along with the Uni on this one, yeah? I’m not a praying woman personally, but that’s just my choice; they exist. I’d stake my life on it.”
She shrugged and took a light sip of her coffee. She came to this conclusion by rebelling against the Uni, as one might expect. And while looking into it and talking to people, even diving into some history research for the fun of it, it became pretty clear to her that there were some things that science and magic couldn’t really explain; the zombies were just one example. The elusive answer of Runic ink’s composition was another. “Just like scientific theories and laws, there’s a leap of faith you have to take if you’re going to find any answers, ay? I’d like to confirm it for myself one day.”
She couldn’t guess at how she took her answer; the doctor’s face was as solid as a statue. In the end, she supposed it wouldn’t matter; either she liked it and they’d move on, or she already failed her and it was for the best that two conflicting people didn’t work together. Diya would, however, be upset to miss such a wild opportunity.
Diya looked up thoughtfully as she finished her thankfully alcoholic coffee. A locked door? Is this supposed to be some sort of metaphor, or more literal? She considered asking for clarification but surmised that doing so would not make her happy. She rolled her shoulders and just went with it.
“First I’d want to find out why it’s locked, yeah? Not going to snoop around in a stranger’s house; I want to get at least a vague idea of what’s behind it. Might even scout it with an astral projection rune, if necessary. But after doing that research… Well, my first go-to would be just to ... knock. But if nobody's there and I need to go in... I'd use a reverse-lock rune combination. Straightforward, ay? Save breaking it down for a last resort.”
She pushed her coffee aside, indicating it was finished, and wondering if it would be too forward to ask for a second…

The doctor’s eyebrow rose from the introduction. It legitimately took effort to keep that straight face. It was important that she didn’t give away any sort of clues to a right or wrong answer. Being unsure makes the interviewee uneasy. And a major part of this is to judge how they act while uncomfortable. From this, the doctor could tell that Diya confidently looked to science for stability. And she like that, a lot. Josephine finished her notes and gave the next question. This one was always an interesting personality question. Personality when it came to problem solving. She has had a good 3 usual answers thus far: break down the door, Pick the lock, or ask a billion questions before deciding what to do. As it seems Diya was the latter. Figures out the variables. she typed up underneath the question. Thinks first. She was looking for a place to interject, let Diya know that there’s no reason, just that you need to get to the other side. However there wasn’t really a good point to insert her comment. Oh well, Let’s let her speak. D…Did she just say knock? That’s an answer she hadn’t heard before. It was unique, creative, and opened up a whole new set of options. Her dumbfounded expression turned into a light smile as she finally gave her response. “Interesting”Yup. That’s all you get. Josephine’s eyes caught the movement with the coffee, and she wasn’t the only one. Kyle locked eyes with Josephine for the go ahead, and with a slight tilt of her head she gave it. “Now time for the hard part.” The doctor continued, as she did Kyle walked over with a refill of the coffee. “I have five Riddles for you to answer. You will need to get at least three of them right. The job I have in mind requires creativity, wit, and cleverness. Not to mention the people who made the sites in questions had a particular fondness for riddles. “She took a moment to go to a stopwatch app on her tablet, just to get a gauge on how long it took to reach the answers. “We’ll start with the easiest first.” She said, grabbing her wine glass as her other finger hovered over the start timer button. “What begins with T, ends with T and has T in it?”Begin.

»Interesting
Well, it wasn’t an outright negative response. The interview continued on, so Diya took that as a good sign; given the way her last interviewee left the office, she figured the good doctor didn’t have much patience for humoring people. Hell, vague and short responses were the norm for Uni professors.
She was just grateful to have more of her coffee drink. She gave Kyle a thank-you nod, and gratefully took a sip of the fresh and warm drink, a satisfied smile on her face… which disappeared as the doctor mentioned “the hard part.” Ah, great; it had to get serious at some point, didn’t it? Diya nodded and listened.
A twitch of confusion came and went on her face. Riddles? She had to keep herself from laughing. Gods, this interview was interesting as hell no matter what the end result was. Her reasoning was solid, at least; throw your potential hire for a loop and make them think on their feet, was it?
“What begins with T, ends with T and has T in it?”
T, T, T… Diya hummed. A few words popped into her head, but she shook them off; it was a riddle, not a simple spelling or vocabulary test. Probably in Ethean, too. T… there had to be something about it besides the letter. She sipped her drink and allowed some idle thoughts into her head. T, T, T… She’d never been much one for tea, preferring coffee instead, though her moms did make some wonderful cactus tea…
Wait.
T, the letter. T, the drink. Her Ethean wasn’t perfect, but she was pretty sure she figured this one out. She smiled, all in all taking under a minute to have the thoughts sorted from beginning to end. Her answer came with confidence. “Teapot,” she said. “Starts and ends with the letter, holds the drink, yeah?”
