"Meow." ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 441 words | The high hills of the island were lined with tall grass, dotted with thin young trees that were just beginning to grow. Short stumps were evidence that trees had once grown here in greater numbers, but the small villages that threaded their way across the interior of the island had needed the lumber to create their modest dwellings. One such village sat in the dip of a hilltop that spread out for a half mile, and although it was small, it had a cluster of a dozen houses and a number of stands that lined the one and only dirt path in town. It was an idyllic setting, with the sunset gleaming off of the sea in the distance, framed by slowly descending clouds.
But the beauty had been short-lived. The bodies of the villagers who hadn't fled were laying out in the open, covered in burns that seemed independent of any source of flame. The faces were frozen forever in expressions of pain and terror. No sign of what had caused the destruction was evident, despite the bodies that were still cooling. Only a few isolated spots of burns could be seen on the buildings, none of which had caught fire when they'd been burnt. Charred grass and earth scrawled across the ground in jagged patterns that seemed to have little rhyme or reason.
And yet, for all the death surrounding the area, the village seemed completely silent. Not even a dog barking or the chirping of birds interrupted the lonely whistle of the wind.
From the scene of mixed beauty and horror, a small black cat wove out from under the deck of one house, wandering into the middle of the dirt path and looking around. It wasn't quite large enough to be considered an adult cat, perhaps in that half-way state between kitten and adult, but it walked with all the authority of a queen in her territory. It sat down, licking a paw with a small pink tongue. Curiously, it wasn't frightened or bothered by the stench of death that surrounded it, nor did it even seem to notice that it was the only creature still moving in the abandoned town. As the intruders approached, it would open its yellow eyes and tilt its head, the tail beginning to wind back and forth in the grass. Its ears would flatten as soon as they got too close, the yellow eyes narrowing.
The clouds were darkening overhead, with the sun beginning to set and casting a fading orange glow across the small hilltop. A cool breeze from the sea rustled the grass and ruffled the small creature's fur.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? Mungu Island. She'd taken a boat to the island to check out the threat that needed her help. It was her first time in any part of Suraja. Mentally Taran was checking that off the 'places she'd been' list. So far it included Ethea and Ikigai. Now Suraja. She was not planning to go to Fokradiin anytime soon. Taran was not stupid enough to be a fire magi in a freezing cold climate. She'd have to have rocks for brains. Some people would rudely argue she did, but Taran ignored them. Today she'd chosen some khaki pants with a sleeveless black shirt. She was in her feminine form today, equipped with her broadsword just in case she needed it.
She had arrived at a village. Or what was left of one. Taran saw a body and winced visibly, feeling sick. They were definitely not alive. Burns dotted the woman, just like they dotted the landscape along with fire. She looked at the look left on the woman's face and had to turn away to vomit a bit. It wasn't the first time she had seen a body, but the last time she'd seen one the guy had been trying to kill her. She wasn't old enough to be accustomed to such sights, and although she knew magis lived much longer, Taran hoped she would NEVER be old enough to be used to seeing that.
One of the first things she had learned as a magi was that nature was generally always making some sort of noise. It was part of her learning to be more attuned with nature. And the village before her? It was conspicuously silent. Now, with the death of the humans she would've figured on that. But not hearing any kind of birds? Or scavengers? This was either a new kill, or the killer was still here. And to be honest, that sort of put Taran ill at ease.

»If any of her professors could see Hadiyya while she traveled back to Suraja, they would swear something was wrong with her. The entire travel was spent preparing runes and brushing up on spirits. She had never really had to use her runes in a combat situation outside of simulations and paralysis runes slapped on handsy bargoers, but she knew that runes would be hard to write on the fly. She wrote, checked, and catalogued the pieces of paper, memorizing the feel of each page and its location in her journal.
She wasn’t all serious, though; she was filled with childlike enthusiasm as soon as she crossed over into Suraja. If she survived this, she was going to visit home; Mungu island was only a few hours by boat from her old coastal town.
Mungu Island. The name chilled her; there were rumors about that island, even as a kid; she never set foot into the jungle regions of the country, and the horror stories and folk tales were enough to keep her from wanting to. Fortunately, she had company on the boat, a magi by the name of Taran, who was hired for the same reasons as her. She conversed with her while chainsmoking cigarettes to calm her nerves, telling her about Suraja, her schooling, and making jokes to lighten the mood.
“Ay, be careful,” she said when the boat landed. “Jungle’s dangerous enough on its own without some bloodthirsty killer making things worse. Hold on, now.”
Before they went further, Diya set up a pair of mark and recall runes for the both of them, to activate on a trigger word, unique to each of them. “Ay, shit starts going downhill? Say your last name, then ‘out;’ you’ll come back here. Isn’t worth dying for the Sultan’s orders, trust me.”
As they closed on the village, the smell hit her first. The stench of death was one she had long forgotten, and had hoped to never smell again. When the village came into view, Diya looked away and shut her eyes. She expected it, but it didn’t make it any easier. The level of slaughter. The silence. The… precision of it all. It was wrong.
Before she could speak, she saw it; the strut of a confident cat, casual and playful, but just as wrong as the scenery around them. It wouldn’t be alone if it was scavenging; you wouldn’t be able to stop the swarm of cats, both domestic and jungle, from the feast of flesh. She spit her cigarette from her mouth and retrieved her journal from the pocket of her lab coat.
“Taran, I think we’ve found our spirit, yeah?” She lowered herself, ready to move. Her head swiveled around and up at the noticeable change in temperate and cloud cover. Her hair lifted and flowed gently with the breeze. “Be careful.”
Of course, Diya couldn’t help but smirk at the feline. “Ay, pussycat!” She called to it in Surajan as she took slow steps towards it, circling to the left. She made sure to maintain a large distance; there was no telling what it was capable of. If the books by Ex-professor Benedict were any indication, the appearance of a spirit did not betray its abilities. Why don’t you lie down so I can give you a belly rub, yeah?”

spirit sighting
*hiss* ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 332 words | The change was more extreme with the weather than it was with the spirit itself. The sky crackled with arcs of white energy, with the lightning staying in the clouds. It wasn't until the Spirit heard the woman's voice that its yellow eyes began to glow white. Jagged lines of energy bled off from the edges of its eyes as it stared them down, its dark fur back-lit by the frenzy of electricity in the sky. A massive bolt of white lightning struck the ground just in front of the pair of intruders, scattering sparks and stones in the air. The thunder rent the air with all the volume of an explosion, echoing over the hilltops. Once the blinding light faded away, the Spirit bared its tiny fangs and hissed, its voice carried away by the ferocity of the wind.
It was a warning shot. The Spirit's way of telling them what would happen if they decided to stand their ground. It might have been brought from the Spirit realm by some trick of the gods, but it had chosen this hilltop as its own territory. It would suffer no intruders here. Whatever its size in the material plane, it was not a creature to be underestimated.
If the humans didn't retreat, the wind would continue to increase as the clouds blotted out the sky. With the sun disappearing on the horizon, the only light left was that of the lightning. The clouds rumbled overhead as arcs of lightning began to strike the ground in a seemingly random pattern, one or two per second, spread out across the small village. Some were silent, but most were deafeningly loud, leaving the air with a deep, semi-permanent growl. The Spirit stood, its tail swishing back and forth as the lightning both struck it and emanated from it.
It hissed again, and a bolt of lightning cracked down in between the two intruders. They would come to regret intruding on the Spirit's territory, however briefly.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? Be careful, she said. Jungle's dangerous she said. Taran sighed. Death was surrounding her. Any sensible person would be running the other way. She supposed that was part of the reason she was set apart from others. It wasn't just that she had a tail and claws. She was willing to do what needed to be done. There was a spirit here that needed...what was the word...exorcising? That was probably it. She heard Hadiyya say she thought they'd found their spirit and Taran nodded in agreement. The cat was the only living creature around. Instead of taking the logical approach and, say, starting to think up a game plan to take on the cat in the middle of a dead village, Hadiyya spoke to the cat and asked for a bellyrub. Taran hissed at her working partner.
"What are you doing? You gonna offer the bloody thing catnip next? Maybe bring out a cat toy? Are you trying to get us killed?" It was besides the point that the cat was likely the spirit, and she was assigned to it. She was a friggin' wolf magi. This definitely did not go unnoticed. Then as if to prove it, the cat confirmed it was the spirit. Lightning cracked, the eyes lit up. Suddenly Taran was feeling rather...apprehensive about the encounter. "They say lightning only hits in the same place twice. But once is enough to kill you so noooo thanks." It was grumbled to herself, but it was probably loud enough for Hadiyya to hear, honestly. She skittered back when the lightning hit in front of them. Nope that kitty did not want a bellyrub. Then the cat seemed to look even less pleased with them. And wholly unimpressed, but I mean this was still a cat so Taran just counted that as par for the course. She looked at Hadiyya, slight panic evident in her dark eyes.
"You got any better ideas than antagonizing the spirit? I mean if it lights anything more on fire I'll have something to work with, but I'd rather avoid getting my hair singed off by lightning thank you very much." Then she took in the body language of the cat and groaned. The wolf in her was sending a clear message: they were on what it considered its territory. Fighting her fight or flight was a good idea, if a difficult one. Her sense of preservation was screaming rather loudly.
"Do we wait for it to attack, or try and get the drop on a spirit that's obviously pretty powerful?" It was a difficult call to make. She didn't want to make it without the opinion of her partner. If they had time to discuss it. Which...honestly they might not.

»Diya laughed. “Hey, I didn’t know you spoke SurajACK!” Lightning struck before she could finished the thought, and she jumped back with wide eyes. Shit, this kitten wasn’t messing around, was it? The second warning shot was enough to get her to dive into the doorway of the nearest building, or what remained of it. A wall was better than nothing at least.
“I’m full of ideas, yeah?” She shouted back to her partner. She flipped through her journal, scrambling mind trying to remember her organization. The first thing she did was find her night-eye rune, which she put on the first page just in case she needed to be able to find it quickly (Going through her journal in the dark would have been a disaster). She affixed it to her person before uttering the trigger word. The darkness gave way to detail. Now that she could see, it was time to show the kitten that it would have been wiser to accept her initial offer. Which one, which one…
Aha, that would work! She tore the page containing what she dubbed the “Napalm” rune- A Greater Grenade rune mixed with a Greater Ignite one. The result was a large explosion that left a shower of flames. She smirked; maybe the kitty wanted to play with a cat toy after all, ay? “First idea? Singe it before it singes you.”
She leaned from the doorway. “Aleab Narih,” she whispered, and the paper crumbled into her hand and developed some heft. Once she located the troublesome little feline, she hurled the rune at it. As soon as it made contact with the ground, it exploded into a burst of fire and flames, powerful enough to make her duck back in the doorway for a moment. Damn, those Greater runes were nothing to joke around with. She didn't know how close her rune hit or if the cat was fast enough to move away, but she could hope it did something.
The explosion was her answer to Taran’s question. “You’re a fire magi, right?” She called to her. “Well there’s your damn source! I’m not waiting around to get killed by goddamn magic cat, so let’s go!” Hopefully Taran would be able to hold her own out there while she could figure out what to do next.

spirit sighting
*hiss* ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 336 words | At first, the humans seemed to retreat, and their deference pleased the Spirit. It raised its head proudly, lifting its tail. But when they didn't keep running, the satisfaction faded quickly into anger. Tiny white claws kneaded the dirt under its paws, and it walked forward, looking this way and that, trying to figure out where they had gone. It could feel that they were near, but the sense didn't give enough detail to discern a hiding place. It paused again as movement caught its attention, and it saw a small object flying through the air toward it. What could this thing be? How fun, the little ball was the sort of thing it liked to chase...
The interest quickly became rage as the ball exploded into flames, and the Spirit leaped backward in time to get a nasty singe on its whiskers and the fur of its chest. How dare that human deface its whiskers! Briefly licking the ash from its chest, it turned its attention to the attackers. With a low growl, the Spirit shot forward, becoming a blur of speed that moved like a lightning bolt, jagged and irregular. White energy formed around its body, and as it passed Diya's hiding space, it stopped, sensing that it had passed her.
Electricity crackled over its fur, with the dry grass scorched beneath its feet. Without sparing a second to hiss, it sent a massive lightning bolt in the vague direction of her hiding place. When it struck, electricity rippled across the ground around the wooden surface, scorching it black.
It disappeared again, shooting across the ground as if it was nothing but a bolt of energy itself. It wanted to find the creature that smelled of wet dog fur. It came to a stop on the top of one of the buildings, looking around as the lightning strikes from the clouds continued to batter the landscape. If the Spirit's magic struck the filthy creature, it would certainly feel the energy coursing through the dog. Whether she was dead or simply had fled, the Spirit didn't much care. It was the master of this place, and anyone who questioned that fact would be destroyed.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? She could guess what Diya had been about to say. However, considering the spirit problem she didn't bother to answer that. They had more pressing problems than Taran mentioning she learned some Surajan from a friend at Magi Training School. Besides, mentioning the school around humans was a sort of hit and miss. Diya did seem much more tolerant though. Taran was thankful for that.
She saw the runic grenade explode, and it made the spirit more unhappy with them. She heard Diya talk about the source and Taran grimaced. Did she just try to shoot fire at the spirit or something? Wouldn't that piss the spirit off more? That said, when she saw the spirit going after Diya...she was about to try to get its attention when it spit lightning. And came looking for Taran. They were in a bad situation. This spirit was scorching the grass. The grass was dry Taran could hear it. This was not a happy kitty. This cat was fast. Taran flicked open her lighter and manipulated the fire to speed herself up enough to get to the grenade fire. It wasn't a super speed by any stretch. She didn't want to chance losing control. But she needed to get to the source Hadiyya had provided. If the cat was trying to find her, she would be able to find Taran, so there was no point in...ahem...pussyfooting around. Pun quite intended. No amount of hiding would prevent them from being found if this cat was determined. This was an otherworldly being they were dealing with, after all. She took a deep breath and manipulated the flames towards the spirit, hoping to at the very least distract their opponent enough for Hadiyya to figure something out.
Taran's eyes narrowed. Fire was her specialty. Apparently it was also the specialty of this lightning cat. A cat versus a wolf. Taran tried not to make it personal, but damn if it wasn't difficult. She was glad she had a tolerant work partner. Working with a magi hater on top of this spirit would've been difficult. As she was thinking on it, a lightning bolt hit right next to her and she squeaked. That right there was not part of her plan! It was a good thing she tucked her tail into her pants, or it might have a problem with the fires and the lightning.

»Gods damn, this cat was quick on its feet. She held a breath as it zipped by her location, and exhaled in a variety of expletives (in all three languages she knew) when she saw the lightning course towards her, forcing her to dive further into the home. Her body tensed; even with the wood as a shitty conductor, the felt stings of electricity on her body. Gods only knew what would have happened if it hit her dead-on. Well, dead-on would have multiple meanings at that point.
It didn’t help that the entire area was dry; no doubt this house would go up in flames soon. She had to hope the fire she provided for Taran would be enough to help her toe-to-toe with the quick kitten. How do you even hit something that fast? She flipped through her journal, through dozens upon dozens of runes that she had prepared for… well, any situation. Many weren’t helpful now, but she paused when she landed on her “spirit snare.” Maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn’t, but perhaps… it would make it easier to fight.
She set the paper down in the building, a Greater Pull rune with the instructions to affect only spirits. Gods help her if there was a colony of these damn cats. After she set it down, she exited the building through a window on the opposite side of the doorway, putting the house between her and where the spirit (hopefully still) was. With her back against the wall, she took a moment to catch her breath.
“Here, kitty, kitty,” she whispered. Then, louder, she spoke the trigger word for the delay rune attached to the snare, while focusing on the spirit in her mind: “Kamin.”
And if this didn’t work? It was probably going to be pissed. She found the rune for her Greater Magic Shield, and activated it. A shimmering, round shield appeared on her left forearm. Did this lightning count as magic, in the same way it would be if it came from an air magi? A bolt struck near her position and forced her to roll away and up into a standing position. By the gods, she hoped so. She was pretty sure she couldn’t outrun lightning.

spirit sighting
*hiss* ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 508 words | The Spirit saw the Magi move from its vantage point, and tried to phase back into the Spirit world. It hissed as it realized that the way was blocked. The gods were having their fun, and it wasn't even the Mother Goddess, who it could have forgiven for it. Instead, it leaped into the next bolt of lightning that struck close enough, and rode it down to the ground. The bright flames that had propelled the Magi girl had stood out in the dark hilltop, and it stopped in front of her in preparation for another bolt of lightning. The dog had dared to intrude on its territory for the last time, certainly.
Before it could launch its attack, it felt a small tug that then became a powerful pull toward the human's hiding place. Its flesh and blood body was fragile, and it snarled irritably as it flew toward the wooden structure. It refused to take a hit like that. Surrounding its body with energy, it accelerated toward the building where it was being pulled. The Spirit crashed through the wood with a resounding crack that split the wall, leaving behind a smoking crevice. It rolled as it landed inside the structure, taking a second to recover its senses with a shake of the head and ears. There was something unexpected in the center of the floor, a piece of paper that smelled of magic. The human... she had done this.
The Spirit's rage made the air crackle with thunder, and as the lightning rippled through the clouds overhead, it all converged on the building, striking with one explosive bolt of lighting that shattered the roof. Leaping to the hole in the roof, it stepped out on the edge of the rooftop, ears flat and eyes glowing. If only it could re-enter the Spirit world and abandon this weak, fleshy body, its power would return to its true levels...
Something seemed to distract it. The Spirit looked toward the harbor where the intruders had landed, where there was a light emanating from the lantern there. It flickered, then went out, bathing the coast in darkness. It felt like a chain unraveling from the Spirit's back, and the magic reflected the change. The glow around the Spirit increased, crackling and snapping with a constant rumble of thunder. The Spirit faded from sight, leaving only glowing eyes behind, before those too vanished into the realm of Spirits.
If that had been the end, perhaps the humans would have been safe. But Kupiec had released his hold on the Spirits, and this one was pissed. The ground shook with the force of the thunder, and the lightning strikes increased.
Unbeknownst to the Spirit, though, this hilltop hid a relic that hadn't been used in an Age, a knife that existed on both the Spirit plane and the human plane. As the lantern in the lighthouse faded, the magic concealing the weapon did the same. It stood on top of an ancient wooden arch, its point buried at the apex.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? Yeah pull the lightning controlling cat into a wooden shelter. That was bright. Taran sighed. She knew in her heart that it was a really good move, regardless of what the structure was made of. Then suddenly the light on the coast went out while the cat was struggling and Taran's eyes widened. She did not have the ability to see in the dark. However, there were quite a few fires around so it wasn't too much of a hindrance. The cat was on the roof, she knew she couldn't get up there quite. She thought perhaps it was done, but then the cat disappeared with just the eyes visible. And the ground shook. Taran did her best to keep her footing, her tail popping out of her pants to help her balance. A wolf generally did not do it,but Taran had watched cats a lot at the school, and had learned a couple tricks. While she couldn't twist her body like a cat, she was still regularly flexible. She hummed, trying to think of something that work on the cat. The lightning increased in frequency.
"Hadiyya, you've pissed this thing off!" She had to give her working partner credit for trying though. Now what could she herself do? The cat was invisible. How could she make the cat visible? She moved closer to where she thought Hadiyya was, and then spoke just quiet enough that hopefully the human would hear her.
"Do you have a locator? Or maybe wind? We need to figure out where that cat is, or anything I aim will be useless." At the moment, she was also curious what had snuffed out the lantern too. The wind? But there didn't seem to be too much wind, or she'd be able to create smoke all on her lonesome. Hmmm...she really didn't want to have one of them act as bait to get the spirit out in the open. She didn't want to light up the hillside with her flames either. Lighting up Hadiyya and her runes was an extremely bad idea.

»In retrospect, she should have known it wouldn’t have been that easy. The sound of the spirit’s initial impact sent her stumbling away from the building, and she rose her shield protectively when it burst through the rooftop. The sheer sound of its power made her ears ring. A blunt piece of wood passed through the shield and conked her on the head; a fitting reprimand for overlooking combining it with a physical shield. It didn’t do any lasting damage, but it send her stumbling and pissed her off. Taran was also starting to piss her off. The lightning would send the building up in flames, which she HOPED would give her fire magi companion the ability capitalize on the moment. Her ears stopped ringing in time to hear her yell about pissing it off. Gee, you think?
“Yeah, I have that effect on people,” she called back as she stood. “You sure you’re a fire magi? Why isn’t that cat cooked yet?!” A lightning bolt struck nearby and she stepped away with her shield in front of her. Shit, this was bad. It was gone, and… hey, what the fuck was that? She pointed to the weird knife shining on the arch nearby.
“Ay, quiet for a moment. You see that?” She said. “Look, everything about this is weird, yeah? And a knife just appearing up there at the same time as a spirit rampage? I’d bet my liquor trunk that it’s important to stop this thing, ay? Best plan I got right now, anyway.”
She wiped away what she expected was sweat from the site of her head, but there was blood in there, too. Dammit, that chunk must have nicked her. Well, it could have been worse. Right now she had more pressing matters to worry about. And she was done tiptoeing around with both the spirit and her partner.
“Look, I can get it down, but you need to distract thundercat, ay?” Her voice was sharp and she narrowed her eyes. “Whatever it takes. Burn the damn town if you have to; everyone’s already dead and I don’t plan on joining them, yeah? Here,” she pulled a page from her journal and handed it to Taran. Alkashf she said, and the rune turned the paper transparent. It was one of her staples, and she always had a copy in her journal; a weak magnifying rune combined with an Identify rune. “Look through that, you can see magic. Don’t know if it works on spirits, but let me know, ay? Now keep it busy, dammit!”
Without waiting for an answer, Diya dashed off to a shelter near the arch, which was a small shed, made of bamboo and with only three walls, far enough out of the way where it shouldn’t burn down. She flipped through her journal. Godsdammit, why had she written so many fucking runes?! Where was just her normal Pull rune? She held her shield over her head as she looked, and gods willing, it would stop an errant lightning bolt from turning her extra-crispy.

spirit sighting
*hiss* ➼ antagonistic roll ➼ rolled on mm/dd/2017 ➼ 389 words | From the Spirit realm, the Magi was far easier to see than the human, because the magic coursing through her veins. Although she hadn't done as much to anger the Spirit, it was still a child of Arithelia, and that meant that she had to die. It was creatures like this Magi that had caused the goddess to abandon the Spirits to the whims of the other gods, like Kalidas and Kupiec. The Spirit's furious growl rumbled the ground as it sent a series of lightning bolts in the general direction of the fire Magi. Aiming an attack between the realms was a tricky business, since it was done less with the eyes and more with the senses, but the Spirit didn't much care what it destroyed in the process of attacking.
The cloud of magic that the Spirit had released had also blinded its senses for a couple of seconds, so although it didn't kill the Magi, it thought it had for a moment, and turned its attention to the human. Where was that human with the magic papers? It was the one that had singed the Spirit's whiskers, and the one that had raised the Spirit's ire. There was a void in the spirit world near the edge of town, and it was both alarming and irritating. A single blind spot in the human world shouldn't have mattered much, but when there were non-magical mortals in the world that could use magic, they were getting onto territory that the Spirit didn't understand.
Unable to find much other than a vague sense of residual magic around the human, the Spirit simply increased the wind on the rooftop, hoping that it would blow the human off of the hilltop. The wooden structures rattled and moaned against the force of the gale, with some debris going airborne. The Spirit itself took up a position in the middle of the town, from which it could control the magic more directly across the entirety of the small town. It wasn't bothered at all by the powerful winds or the blinding lightning strikes.
Those mortals would learn not to attack a Spirit, or to trespass on its territory, like the rest of the charred corpses that littered the ground. The very insolence of the mortals... To think they ever had stood a chance.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? One moment Hadiyya was telling her to cause a distraction because, miracle of miracles, she had a plan. She was about to start shooting off her own special brand of literally FIREworks, when the spirit started shooting lightning bolts like some sort of Zeus wannabe. Well, Taran didn't know of Zeus but if she had that's probably how she'd have described it.
"No problem! Seems like I already have a blo-blessed target painted on my back!" Bloody was probably a bad swear to use if she was looking to not jinx herself, honestly. Taran should probably think more carefully about what she said. Of course, while dodging lightning bolts it was difficult to focus on your own thoughts. It seemed like she had just dodged one, when another one would come down. She singed her hair, but fortunately it had only been an end. Nevertheless, the smell of thick, burned hair drifted to her nose. It was then that she realized the cat would be better able to smell her with the burnt hair. At the moment, that might be okay as she was serving as a distraction. She'd have to think of something to do with it though. Then she realized there was a bit of a pause. The spirit thought she'd died. Taran unsheathed the dagger she carried with her, cutting off the part of her hair that was still smoking a bit. It smelled, and she was counting on that.
Taran sneaked as quietly towards the position of the wind that was picking up. It was undoubtedly the spirit considering that had been Hadiyya's hiding place. Taran stuck the hair in a crevice, before walking as quietly as she could around the area, narrowly avoiding being blown over by the wind. This spirit was determined if nothing else. She then shot off a few spurts from a nearby fire caused by the lightning, in the hopes that the sudden change of position could startle and confuse the spirit enough to give them room to work with.

»Diya was going to develop a fear of thunderstorms at this rate. Maybe cats, too. Why couldn’t this thing be fat and happy like Obsidian?
While she flipped through her journal, thoughts raced. Could Taran hold it off? Even if she pulled the dagger from the arch, was it really the key? And how the hell were they going to stab an invisible cat that moved like lightning, anyway?! Gods willing, Taran would just burn the cat and they could be done with it.
She winced and crawled to sideways-flipped wheelbarrow. The wind was getting brutal, like the sandstorms at home. And if you were out in a northern sandstorm, you were as good as dead. Lightning cracked and wind howled and Hadiyya Nejem was not fucking happy about. While flipping through her journal, she found her pull rune, a backup one that was exactly like the earlier, set to trap spirits. That was when the lightbulb went off in her head.
She flipped the page, took a breath, and started writing another rune. Steady, steady, steady… Her hand stayed firm from years of countless practice, but the spirit didn’t plan on making it easy for her. She set a nearby brick down on the other part of the open journal to keep it from taking off, just in case the big bad cat decided it was time to huff and puff and blow her shelter down. Not that it was far off; the bamboo shook violently against the wind. The parts of her clothes that weren’t covered by the wheelbarrow were whipping in the wind.
She had to focus. It wasn’t a horribly complex rune, but if she didn’t get it done soon, she wouldn’t have a chance to write new ones. And her journal was prepared with many, but so far the cat seemed to do fine against them.
Taran would have to hold for a bit longer. If she died or had to recall out, and the cat found Diya’s hiding spot, she knew she was done for, too. And if she died here, Ami would kill her.
