Although Luca was not exactly a stranger to the Arecia Woods, he was not its most thorough explorer, either. On occasion he visited the outskirts in search of supplies, but never before had he dared to wander this far into the forest. Any sort of familiar territory had long since been left behind, and without a guide, he’d probably have gotten himself hopelessly lost a long time ago. Or worse… but he really didn’t want to think about that right now. However, Mikaiah seemed to know where he was going— or at least was confident enough in the way he walked not to indicate otherwise. It hadn’t even been a full twenty-four hours since they’d first met on the shore of Loch Pérrileux, but the salamander magi had seemed trustworthy enough. Besides, the guy sort of owed him after that Upper incident, didn’t he? This was just favor for a favor. Of course, getting there was still somewhat easier said than done. Unused to such uneven terrain as he was, Luca found himself tiring out a bit faster than he had anticipated, and with the tangle of branches overhead blocking his view of the sky, he couldn’t even tell how long the two of them had been walking, let alone guess how much more there was to go. Fortunately there was an easy way to solve at least the latter problem. He had a guide after all. So, trying not to sound too winded, Luca asked, “Hey, Miki…? Do you, ah… can you tell me how much further we need to go?”Mikaiah Lupei (ooc: Figured I’d put this in the Haven board since we’ll be getting there soonish.)

"My Guiding Moonlight" With each twig-crunching step, Miki could feel himself drowning more and more in the details of all the little flora that permeated the floor Arecia Woods. Most visitors to the forest always came to know its magical as well as lonely nature, but for the Magi who lived in the Woods, navigating it was like prodding an insistent lover. Or at least that was the comparison that was made to him once and made him giggle slightly. Sounds helped to point the way and the trappings of the various trees and fauna helped him distinguish their next direction. It hadn't been until much later did the young Magi learn the meaning of the metaphor. There was no straightforward path in the Arecia. Sometimes wild and dangerous animals moved in unexpectedly and other times the challenge was going around the swamp. To navigate the Arecia Woods, you had to go deep into it physically as well as mentally. You had to know when it ebbed and it was time to weave or the path was going to disappear and you were to stay the course or tack in another direction. Being headstrong was more of a liability than an asset in some of those cases. The terrain exhausted you and woodlands robbed your sense of time and composure. Speaking to Luca even did a bit to diminish his concentration, though he was happy to pause and unhinge himself from focus to answer. "Shouldn't be too much farther. If we're lucky, we'll arrive just as the sun is beginning to set. Can't be caught camping in the woods so we're not stopping." Even Miki had to admit that all the straining to track the trail was taking its toll on him. He was confident and poised for the direction, but he was still tired and beginning to think about his next dose of Uppers whenever he wasn't completely immersed in focus. He hadn't had his latest dose in a while and the more he fought to keep the urge suppressed, the more he was egged on. It was like a ghost was hovering over his shoulder, constantly reminding him of what he wanted. Cold had long seeped into his fingers and up his arms until his whole body felt clammy while he hadn't been paying attention. "Luca... I'm cold." he near-whispered with a bit of a choke coming in his voice like a wave, "Do you mind if I have those strong-smelling scents... or anything?"

There by sundown, if they got lucky. It wasn’t the most ideal, but it would be better than wandering around in the woods at night. Camping out on the plains or in an abandoned building was one thing, but out here… No. Definitely best not to risk it. Nodding, Luca adjusted the pack on his shoulders and did what he could to muster up a bit more energy. “Alright.” They would make it, he was sure. They just had to keep moving. There was silence for a while, save for the somewhat muffled sounds of their footfalls. In it, Luca allowed his mind to wander a little, until his companion spoke up again, murmuring a complaint. “Cold?” he repeated, frowning. It wasn’t that frigid out here, was it? A moment later, when Miki asked for the smelling salts, he realized his mistake. It wasn’t that kind of cold. Right then… “The smelling salts are only really good for fainting,” he informed the other magi, frowning worriedly. And he definitely didn’t have any Uppers on him. So… what did that leave? Biting his lip in thought, Luca spent several moments in search of another solution. After a while, glancing sideways at the salamander magi, he held out his hand. As he did, a pale, whitish glow appeared over his fingers and palm. “Here, give me your arm…” Although he wasn’t the strongest healer out there, his magic did allow him to ease or cure the symptoms certain diseases. Maybe, just maybe, withdrawal would be one of them. Mikaiah Lupei

"My Guiding Moonlight" At Luca's prompting, Miki shakily held out his arm so the other Magi could run the faint magic over him. It was a bit disappointing that the salts wouldn't be able to help his withdrawal symptoms and his voice teetered a bit in show of it, though he tried to focus for the time being. Once they were back in Haven, he could get a refill and perhaps something to eat too. Luca's fingertips glowed and Miki could detect a bit more of his warmth coming over and sheathing against his skin. It made his feet stand up straighter and his back felt the tension vanish enough to feel like he could go on for just enough time to get back home. He noted that Luca had more skill in the art of healing then he did. Miki could do a little bit, but not relax himself in the way the other Magi could. Once Luca had finished up, Miki took in a deep breath of air and coughed a little bit. "Thank you very much Luca. That feels a lot better. The chill is gone for now."It was made a lot better knowing that he was actually enjoy and be completely comfortable in Luca's company. It wasn't what he was used to, but it was a content and genuinely friendly silence. Once in a while, Miki would cough or he'd catch the sound of an animal scurrying off into the thickets, but the casual emptiness between them was mostly unbroken and neither of them seemed to mind at all. They continued about, Miki guiding them through the depths of the forest. Observing the fading sunlight, he figured they would soon be there and became all the more eager to pick up their pace. His shoes began to stomp over mulled tall grass before coming to a small little pond in their path. The murk was shallow and the rocks jutted out enough that Miki determined that swimming across might not be a good idea. They pond extended farther down, probably going a bit deeper upstream if they tried to go around it. If he recalled, he usually tried to look for a tree that had fallen over in order to cross the swamp. It would make for a bit of balancing for them, but they would manage to evade any of the vicious fish and leeches that lurked in these murks. Before he continued to consider the thought, Miki decided to turn back to Luca and mentally reached out, "Are you any good at walking over a fallen tree without falling off?" he asked with some concern. If not, the other way would be to walk around even though that might mean they'll have to hope and make their way in the dark. The path around was likely going to take at least a good 30-45 minutes.

As soon as it was within reach, Luca’s fingers closed lightly around his companion’s forearm, leaving only the slightest of pressure while he worked with his magic. The process, to him, felt a little bit sluggish, but seemed to work nevertheless as he worked to restore a feeling of strength and warmth to the other magi’s body. While Miki straightened up, he tried to ignore the waning of his own depleting energy, and eventually released him when it seemed his work was done for the time being. “You’re welcome,” he answered, smiling wanly. With a deep breath in, he tried to draw himself up a little. “If it comes back, let me know.” A few more quiet moments passed before he added, “I have some food in my pack, if you think that will help too.” In fact, it probably wasn’t a bad idea for both of them to eat something, even if it was just a small snack. So, still walking, he began to rummage, taking note of Mikaiah’s coughing all the while, until eventually he pulled out a couple bags of dried fruit and nuts. One, he offered to the other magi, waiting to see whether or not he accepted it before opening up the other and beginning to eat. For a while after, all was quiet again. Neither really spoke, but then, neither really needed to. Eventually, the light began to fade, and with it, their surroundings started to change, until they reached water. There they stopped. Less familiar with the area, Luca looked to his traveling companion to decide how they ought to proceed, and was rewarded with a voice in his head. “Um…” A fallen tree, hm? His eyes flicked back to the water, in search of an end he couldn’t see. Across rather than around… Between that and taking a swim, finding a makeshift bridge did seem like the better option, especially given how limited their time was before nightfall. “… I think I’ll be okay,” Luca answered at last, shrugging. How hard could it be, anyway? Mikaiah Lupei

"My Guiding Moonlight" Gratefully taking the offered snack, the two of them munched as the went. It wasn't an extremely filling selection, but it warmed Miki a bit and having a not-empty belly went a long ways to helping him focus on the paths ahead and the sounds around the two of them as the trees themselves were also seemingly preparing for nightfall. The kindred spirits hurried onward, enjoying the stillness and tranquility before coming across the waterbed. Miki nodded acceptingly towards Luca and began to quickly stride downstream from the lake, taking Luca through a few bushes and several more close-squeeze areas between the shrubs and knee-high grass to a steep drop down a fledgling, muddy hill. "Haven should be further down once we bypass the swamp. I think this area though may have been 'used' though at one point..." he relayed mentally to Luca as they traveled and rounded another corner between some overgrowth until they reached the bottom where the . The marsh smelled worse than he had anticipated and farther down it quickly assaulted against Miki's sensitive nose like wildfire. Perhaps the marsh had been used as a privy at one point or perhaps the two of them had just found their way into the worst area of the swamp. Either way, Miki decided it would be best to hurry as a light, but thickening, mist also drifted over the murky black waters. Miki continued to walk further until he came to the object he knew was there. A large oak tree had fallen over and there were obvious footfalls where he could tell that others came through. It may have been the back route, but they were on the right track. The tree's roots flagged at the edge of the water, showing just how much brute force had been required to lift it. Rocks were gathered at the beginning to be used as stepping stones to get on top of the large tree as the large bulk of the trunk was a bit taller than both Miki and Luca. Normally, this would probably have been a lot easier if either of them could work with water or rocks, Miki remembered to himself. It wasn't the main path, but it would mean that pursuers usually got lost or tried to swim in the waters. Once he had climbed up on top, Miki started to steadily balance himself atop the tree before realizing a slippery substance underfoot. The top of the tree was slick and bitten from age. The once easy-to-walk wood was much more worn this time around, possibly from the winter or an overly zealous Magi who didn't want people coming to Haven on this route. "Careful Luca. The tree is slippery." Miki twisted a bit, his foot nearly dislodged by the uneven and rather weird footing. He was able to recover with little problem, though the rest of the way he was much more careful with his steps. He had to stop periodically, keeping an eye on Luca from behind and ready to jump at a moment's notice should Luca trip or fall. "Just past here, we can cut across the swamp and Haven should be only a few more minutes away."

Mikaiah started off again, and Luca was quick to follow, keeping pace with the other magi as best he could. It was a bit more difficult for him to squeeze through some areas, given he had his pack to worry about, but with some additional effort he was able to manage. As his companion reached out to him once more, though, all he could think of was how eager he would be for a good night’s rest once they’d arrived. “Alright,” he replied to the message, working not to sound too worn out… and to ignore the smell that had begun assaulting his nose. Eventually, they seemed to arrive at what they were looking for. Up ahead, a tree large enough to serve as a makeshift bridge appeared out of the underbrush. The footprints found around it, he took as a good sign— surely it meant they were still on the right track. With a few grunts and a brief scrabble as he lost his footing on a loose stone, Luca climbed up after Miki, and took a moment to find his own balance before answering him. “I’ll do what I can…” Ultimately, what he could do was a somewhat embarrassing display of wobbling back and forth with both arms extended while he made his way across the tree. But at least by the end of it he hadn’t fallen off. Slipped and scrabbled once or twice, but not fallen. Holding off a sigh of relief as he stepped off on the other side, Luca would continue to follow along wherever his friend took him. Mikaiah Lupei

"My Guiding Moonlight" He had to admit: Watching Luca cross the divide while wobbling about and looking embarrassed from the stark pink shade across his cheeks was actually a little cute and Miki couldn't help the impish smirk. He wanted to reach out with his telepathy and talk as he was crossing, though thought better of the idea before doing so. It wouldn't be kind to have Luca fall into a pit of polluted, dirtied water and he had no clue what other fish species living in this murk would want to eat the other Magi. Once they passed over the bridge, it wasn't long before they were coming upon amazing view of Haven from the underside just as the purple hues in the sky were beginning to fade to black. The landscape was tranquil and serene as the two Magi made their way up one last hill trek before finding themselves at the gate and entering the city. "Well, probably a bit flashier than what you're used to, but welcome to Haven Luca!" Miki conveyed telepathically, looking about as various Magi went about in the residential district or headed in the opposite direction down to the Farmer's Market. Miki's own home was farther down in the same direction they began to head, though he wasn't sure what Luca's plans were at the moment.

Maybe it was the anticipation of their arrival, but even after the balancing act over the water, it still felt like a while before the two of them got anywhere. The deepening shadows didn’t help much with the illusion. To a point, though he didn’t want to say so aloud, Luca was almost worried. But then, ahead of them over the crest of a hill, light began to appear. It was faint, at first, but with every step closer it grew brighter, spurring him onward at a faster pace. Excitement began to build, bubbling in his chest and ready to burst. In his eagerness, he tripped once or twice on the way up the ridge, but even that couldn’t slow him down now. They were going to make it… And, at long last, there it was. Haven. In a way, Miki was quite right— it was definitely different than anywhere he’d been before. Although, even with the message projected right into his head, he barely registered his companion’s words as he stared, open-mouthed and wide-eyed, at the city around them. Trees towered overhead, meshing almost seamlessly with the structures carved in or around them. Nearly everything was stone, and wood, and… natural. Like it had all risen from the earth on its own. And the people… Even in Dagos, Luca couldn’t recall seeing so many magi in one place before. Almost oblivious to the action, Luca began to slow down until he had come to a stop entirely. At the moment, he couldn’t even bring himself to care that he was standing in the middle of the street. His eyes had started to sting, but it was only when he felt the first few trickles of warmth down his cheeks that he remembered himself. Sniffling, he quickly wiped the wetness away on the edge of his sleeve and, when it felt his voice was no longer in danger of cracking, asked, “Do you, um… know if there are any hostels or inns around I could stay in for the night?” There had to be somewhere, surely… Mikaiah Lupei

"My Guiding Moonlight" "There are a couple nearby. One is the Arabia and I think you'd like that one. It has a nice pleasant heat to it and run by brothers. There is also some others... though I wouldn't recommend going to the one run by the Water Magi with a bad temper." Miki chimed off using his telepathy as they walked along the side. The scenery was darkened now, few Magi were out and bustling, but several still were. Other parts of Haven may be busier, though the entrance seemed to be closer to the residential districts where many were getting ready to soon shack up for the night. He decided to guide Luca toward the Arabia, though he himself would need to head home for the evening instead of staying in a hotel. There wasn't much money in his pocket after spending it all on Uppers, though he was willing to help Luca rent a room in exchange for saving him by the lake. It was the least he could do. "I have some money with me... but I can't buy the room for the night and I need to head home soon. I can show you the rest of the town tomorrow though. I can show you all around Haven tomorrow." It then hit Miki to ask Luca how much he had to spend on a room, "How much money do you have? The Arabia is more expensive than Fantasia... but you might not like it. The Water Magi running the place is... kinda a hothead."

Well, at least he had options. The Arabia, one place with apparently unfriendly staff, and a few others… Luca hummed thoughtfully, mulling over which might be the best to try. But as a newcomer to this place, he couldn’t even begin to guess. Whichever would cost the least was probably his best bet, but… which one would that be? And where? Looking around, they seemed to be in a more residential area, but which way to go to even find one of the inns, he had no idea. At least Miki was still there to guide him, and hadn’t run off the second they’d reached the city’s edge. Adjusting his pack for what felt like the thousandth time that day, Luca did what he could to continue keeping up. Unsure whether his companion was offering to help cover the cost— and quite certain he was going to try insisting he didn’t have to, if that was the case—he stopped for a moment to consider before answering him. “Not much,” he admitted after a while, grimacing faintly. Certainly not enough to waste on one night. There were rations and supplies he needed most of his money for, and even some of the cheaper inns tended to be costly to him. “Whatever place is cheapest in the city will be fine— I can deal with a hot-headed magi as long as it’s affordable.”It didn’t occur to him at first that there was another, far less costly option staring him in the face, but even when it did, Luca didn’t want to ask. Even if following Mikaiah home might be simpler, he didn’t want to impose like that, after he had already done so much. Instead, he said, “If you just point me in the right direction, I’m sure I can find the place. I don’t want to keep you out for too long— you must be tired, too…”Mikaiah Lupei

"My Guiding Moonlight" Miki eyed Luca as they went, decidedly striding down towards the Arabia as the homes on both sides had their blinds and everything closed. Little did his company know that the very same occurring option had popped into Miki's brain a while ago, but for once he wasn't willing to be selfish and not entertain the option. It would've been the polite thing to do... and it wasn't like he had no affinity for the option. The overriding reason for the change of heart was that he needed to refill his stash of Uppers and it wasn't something he would like Luca to find out about. Maybe if Luca asked, but Miki doubted he would. The other Magi was too polite and kind. The Arabia was close by and Miki felt his heart quickening a little bit from the excitement of imminent relief coming for an itch he severely needed to scratch. Just a couple would do... he wouldn't overdo it this time. He had a supply in his apartment.. maybe just enough for another week at best. Well, that would certainly work. As his brow did begin to perspire and his mouth dried out, Miki felt his magic desert him and he turned about to speak. "I can't just leave you to wander around in strange place you've only just arrived in. I'll at least escort you so you don't have to worry about finding your way. I'll be back early tomorrow so I can show you what's around the town. There are soooo many things I want to show you. I'm glad you didn't choose the Fantasia though... to be honest."The Arabia was stylish for a Magi Hotel, a few banners hung around the sand wall architecture of violet and orange hues. It wasn't the tallest building around, but few would be able to pass by and not take a moment to pause and admire it even in the darkness. The roof was faded in different rainbow colors, but that didn't distract or take away from it at all. Despite being cheaper than the Fantasia, in Miki's opinion, it was a whole lot nicer in both appearance and spirit. Once they had arrived, Miki began to hurry forward, "This is it. Probably one of the nicest places in Haven. The clerk in the front lobby will show you to...." He had been saying cheerfully, only to have the air suddenly knocked out of his lungs when he saw a large sign tapped onto the front door: "CLOSED FOR VACATION. Thank you for stopping by!" That was enough to make Miki's face droop and his stomach express it's own agitation and emptiness with a loud, beastly growl. "Well..... ummm" Miki stuttered, taken aback all of a sudden, "I guess I forgot they were going to be on vacation... my bad."It was becoming unbearable now and Miki actively felt his spirit deflate just a bit. "I'm sorry Luca... I thought they weren't heading out until next week... Fantasia is probably closed too now that I think about it, but ..... if you don't mind..... I can let you stay with me...."

Although by now it was quite dark out, Luca could still see there was something amiss with his companion. Sweat had begun to glisten on his brow, and his body language seemed to grow twitchier by the minute. Frowning, he reached out to try catching Miki lightly by the sleeve. “Are you alright?” he asked, forgoing whatever weak argument he might have made against his new friend staying out any longer than he absolutely had to. “If you need it, I can try using a bit of magic again…” He trailed off when they came to the front of a new building that stood out from many of the others they had passed, colorful even in the dark. The Arabia. Luca paused, eyeing the place dubiously while his friend said something about a clerk, and… Hm? What is it?” Eyeing Mikaiah worriedly when he suddenly fell silent. Maybe he should have just tried healing him, rather than wait for permission, and… His eyes fell on the sign posted at the door. “Closed”, it read. Luca’s shoulders fell, and already he had begun to consider his other options. There had been a park of some sort a couple streets back, with a couple of benches and a decent covering of grass. Maybe there would work… “It’s fine, really. I can just—…” he began, trying to reassure the other, only to stop when another choice was presented. Although the idea of staying with Miki had occurred to him, he hadn’t expected to actually hear an offer. Swallowing, Luca shifted uncertainly where he stood while he answered. “Well, I mean… it’s your home. If you don’t mind, then… it’ll be alright…?”Mikaiah Lupei

"My Guiding Moonlight" Miki sighed as his fingers twitched into pretzel knots at the anxiety this was causing him. He couldn't just leave Luca to spend his first night here on the pavement or out of his way. That wouldn't be kind of him to do. On the other hand though, he really didn't like having people see him when he needed to gather his drugs. It just made him very uncomfortable and... "It'll be fine... I can't let you be homeless by yourself after everything. My place is... not far away. It's not much to look at though." With a bit less spring in his step, Miki started walking down the closest road on his left and bidding Luca to follow him. He felt drained, not just from the lack of a high from the usual Uppers in his system but also from having the anxiety worked into his bones. What would Luca think.. when he saw that? It didn't take long for them to get to his apartment, given that it was too close for Miki to take any long routes and the daylight was gone enough that Miki decided not to take any chances. Being out in Haven wasn't extremely dangerous, but there were some instances where Magi too lost their sanity and did horrific things. They were few and far between, but they did occur in small fringes of this paradise. Miki's apartment was what many familiar with him would probably come to expect. Magi typically have houses that assuage their true nature and Mikaiah was no exception to that rule. It wasn't dirty or disorderly, but it was in a bit more of a state than usual since Miki had neglected cleaning while he wasn't home. It certainly in his opinion reflected his flare and impression of flashy aesthetics and music. It was small for a one-room apartment, little bigger than a large bedroom that was cramped for space but caught the eye with persistent regularity for the way it used influence of design from Fire, Water, and Earth Magi before adding Miki's own spin. Dead in the middle was a pit in the style commonly used by Fire Magi for cooking purposes and it also lent a warm glow to the place and charcoal and water were added. The single bed took up the far-right corner, meant to only fit one person but may fit two if they were willing to stay close to each other. The walls were painted variations of crimson red and aqua blue. The entrance had a lot of red around it where Miki had gone to some lengths to paint musical notes above and on the walls while the opposite side transitioned to a deep, dark blue and an orange glow was added by the lamp surrounded in crystal. A couple of nice knick-knacks decorated the space, like a globe placed on top of a bedside table. The floors were stone-based, but they were soft and not rough and sharp. As Miki stepped in, he was quick to head over to the pit and begin warming his hands before turning back to Luca. "Well... this is my home. What do you think?"

It was almost kind of funny, the way Miki worded his concern. “I can’t let you be homeless by yourself”… Though he didn’t laugh, Luca smiled gently at the other magi. “It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve slept outside,” he replied, trying to lighten the mood a little. He did really appreciate the offer, of course, but that didn’t mean he wanted his friend to be overly worried about him. “But… thank you. I’m sure your place is fine.” He followed closely as ever once they’d started moving again, now on the way ti Mikaiah’s apartment. Thankfully for both of them, the trip wasn’t too long. The place itself was small, but still larger than some of the places Luca had slept in before by a good margin, and he lingered in the doorway for a while while he took in the sights of the room. A bed in one corner, a fire pit in the middle, and various bits of other furniture and possessions scattered about everywhere else. He wasn’t sure he’d ever seen walls painted quite so vibrantly, but it added a certain colorful character to the place that seemed to suit its usual occupant rather well. “It’s nice,” he answered with a smile, “Thank you again for letting me stay…” His eyes wandered while he spoke, searching for a decent place to settle in for a night. After a while, he settled on the corner across from the bed, and began making his way over, setting his pack down and digging out his blanket once he arrived. Mikaiah Lupei
