Cogsworth switched his vision to thermal about midway through the bullet’s flight to its destination, penetrating the fog enough to see the outlines emerging from the alleyway. His shot struck home in spectacular fashion, though he was disappointed that the blurry blob of warm colors didn’t fall dead. He thought to squeeze off another round, but previous experience was telling. His shots wouldn’t penetrate whatever defenses this group possessed so easily; at least, not from this distance. If there was any uncertainty towards that conclusion, the wall that began rising from the ground shortly after his second shot left little doubt.
Althea’s plea to the group that followed her was answered by a pair of earth magi and a water magi. The two children of the earth used their combined might to crack the asphalt and raise a seven-foot-tall wall which the child of water encased with a layer of ice. All three were young, and while their gifts were sufficient for the task, they each doubled over as the wall was completed. One gave everyone present a weary smile as she heaved air into her lungs. The group was safe for the moment, but this little display would slow their progress considerable.
“Oh, bugger all,” Cogsworth cursed in frustration. “Well, I suppose that the time for games is long past. Fret not though, little magi. I’ll be sure that you won’t have to worry about all this mess until it’s time for the next war to commence. Then, we shall continue our little sport.” Having said that, Cogsworth tipped his hat and activated his thrusters. There were other targets to find and he had no time for a proper hunt at present.
Perhaps later.
