She did as the spirit commanded, despite her shaking knees. What else could one do in the situation but listen and try your hardest not to mess your pants? Nothing (Especially given that the latter was already taking up a fair amount of her energy). It didn’t help that the spirit reminded her how easily her life could be snuffed out on a whim; somehow she was more terrifying than any deity she’d encountered to date. “Understood,” she said.
It was a good thing she was already wet because she was pretty sure she peed herself a little bit. But the spirit decided to take mercy on her and dry her and her avian companion fully, which she was beyond relieved for.
As soon as the spirit was gone, Maevia fell over, landing gracelessly with a thud. Her body continued to tremble and her breaths were heaving and uneven. A pair of tiny hoots brought her gaze from the tiles to the source, and she scooped up the baby bird, placing it in its favorite place- the natural nest her hood made when it was off her head. No way was it going to sleep, though. Its head continued to swivel around at the new scenery, offering a small hoot or chirp every now and again.
That went well? “Y-yeah,” she said, minus the humor. “I think I need to take a break from gods and spirits sometime soon. I can only handle so many near-death experiences at a time.” She’d never considered taking a vacation in her life, but maybe a vacation from these grand schemes would do her brain some good.
“I suppose so,” she said. Safe. Yeah that was one word to describe it. There wasn’t a submarine armada in any country that could deal with her (Maevia knew this for a fact). She nodded and sat up in an attempt to regain her composure. She looked at Surai with a suspicious gaze, then shook her head with a sigh. “Hard to imagine anything could be. I’ll take your word for it.”
It would take a minute or two for her body to steady enough for her to stand upright again. Frazzled, but calmed, Maevia nodded to Surai. “Okay. Lead the way.”
