Cherche grinned and chuckled at Lelianna’s clear surprise; she was a humble girl, and she knew how to listen; Cherche admired such traits in youth, and found herself enjoying Lelianna’s company all the more now that she was listening to her old history lesson.
“Ah, I’m sure this is all quite a surprise to you, my dear,” she said. “Your garden makes Arecia and its inhabitants very happy. I’ve noticed less unrest in spirits who linger near the miles to which you’ve tended. You can sense it, I am sure; after all, how many animals think of you as family? How many times have you encountered hostility from spirits? You may not have planned it, but you have left your mark on the woods.” She flashed her a wrinkled grin and an unmistakable wink. “I am glad it is a positive one.”
She took a small break to enjoy her tea and baked goods, humming with satisfaction as she did. Even while talking about such grand motions, one should never stop to enjoy the little things in life. Big things were just many little things. Cherche smiled politely as Lelianna continued on with her humble acceptance of the things said to her. She took her hand back and cupped her tea.
“Hmm hmm, you know, dear, too many people believe that being chosen is a matter of luck and birth,” she said. She gave a short laugh at the sight of two children playing tag outside, down below in the market area. “But I think you understand the truth; the woods trusts you, chooses you, because you have earned it. Even if remnants of powerful magi flow through your soul, you have made the choice on where to direct such power. Your life is not predetermined, dear. You have made your decisions, and done so with kindness in your heart; Arecia can sense it. Ha, I believe it may know each of us better than we know ourselves.”
She tilted her head with a smirk as Lelianna shifted the subject. Ah, what a shy girl! Fortunately for the druid, Cherche was happy to talk about any subject, and herself was definitely near the top of the list of her favorite topics. Cherche confirmed Lelianna’s inquiry with a small shake of her head.
“I did not, though that is hardly unheard of. It’s not uncommon for children to have traits the parents did not have, or different versions of them, such as varying tails or horns or marks upon the skin. This is especially true if the parents were of different magic, such as mine.” She paused for a drink of a new tea flavor, and gave a delighted, surprised hum. Oh, her favorite; of course he would have slipped that in a different bag just for her, the sly dog. It was a fruity mix, though smooth instead of tart, and naturally sweet. She poured a bit of milk in the cup and slid it over to Lelianna, indicating she should definitely try this one.
“It was rather curious in my case, however,” she continued. “Nobody in my family possessed traits like mine, and my siblings matched my parents almost exactly. Even my children did not take after me! As well, how many have you seen that match my traits? I haven’t come across one in Haven. Even fire magi, who have dragon-like traits, are a rarity; I have seen only two thus far, and they were mother and child.”
She tapped a claw idly on the table, then shrugged. “I do not know if it means anything special, or if I simply show rare traits. Some would call it a sign.” She chuckled to herself. “I don’t think I would go that far.”

► Wow, can you hear that? If you listen close, you just might hear the hermit's brain completely shut down out of sheer bashfulness. What? What? Let her vanish now, sweet Arithelia. Just let her become a chameleon or something. The druid was too humble to accept this sort of praise or credit. And yet... and yet... Lelianna knew that Arecia had a mind of it's own. Multiple individual minds, really, that made up one entity really, but the message was the same; it had the power to choose. And as someone who'd lived amongst the woods for a while now, Lelianna knew fully well that it would only open itself up to certain people. Still, it was one thing to understand and another to accept. Her being chosen by Arecia?
Gods. Hopefully she wouldn't screw this up.
But onto other topics (please). While Cherche began speaking, Lelianna focused on eating and drinking what had been set before her. The tea was thankfully still warm. And fortunately really good. Wow she really had to come to this place more often. It served the perfect tea for calming her down after an important figure in Haven suddenly asked about her love life while also calling her special right after. Yeah. That. It was interesting to hear more about Cherche too. Though there was a slight pause to her story as the other magi pushed forward a cup. Curious, Lelianna took it (since Cherche would likely insist) and took a sip- Wow that was actually really good! The young magi's face lit up at the taste. And not in the bright, furious red kind of way. Other colors finally began to return to the flowers and gems within her hair. "Wow! That's really good!" Lelianna exclaimed. She was tempted to drink the rest of it but... no no that would be rude. So she slide it back to Cherche.
Oh, and kept listening. That would be rude too.
So Cherche was a dragon/leviathan aspect magi. Yeah Lelianna could see that now. But the fact no one in her family had traits like her was definitely surprising! Yet perhaps not so surprising that Cherche herself had it. “Well… Dragon and leviathans are pretty special, I think. I-I mean… I’m not sure if I’ve met anyone else with those sorts of traits. Maybe one girl but ah… I’ve only ever heard about either in stories. And like you said; they’re seen as the best masters of their element. M-Meaning that they’re seen as strong, even if that might only be rumors. But honestly… well I think it makes sense then for you to have those traits. You’re strong in a lot of ways.” Was she making any sense with this? Goodness, where was she even going with this at this point?
Blush swiftly returning, Lelianna stumbled on. “I-I mean I, ah, assume is all… I-It would take a lot to run Haven, I think. So it would need someone strong. N-Not just in, uh, physical or magical ways but… other… ones. Lots of ones. To help guide it and everyone along, that is. Um. S-So it makes sense. Yes. I-I’m not sure about a sign but… I think it at least shows something. Maybe.”
Cue the magi busying her mouth with drinking another cup of tea. Hopefully the wonderful flavor would keep her from stammering out anything else embarrassing.

“Ah, isn’t it, though? It’s my favorite,” she said, taking the cup back from the polite young lady. “They’re artists here, really they are. He always gives me a few bags to take home; I’ll send you off with a few, as well.”
She nodded. “One girl, you say? Do you perhaps mean the young lady who lives closer near the loch? Ah, what was her name… Fiona? Felicia?” She pouted her lips in thought as her claws drummed on the table. Cherche shrugged a moment later. “She comes to town often. Her and her mother were the only two dragon-aspects I’ve met so far, and that’s quite a long time! Ah, now that I think about it, she may live nearer to your garden; perhaps you two should meet.”
If she’d given Lelianna a chance to speak during any of that, she probably would have had Lelianna’s answer that yes, she did know the girl. And if she let Cherche know, the leviathan would clap her hands together. “Yes, Fiamma! So you are already acquainted! How delightful.”
When Lelianna complimented her strength, Cherche raised her brows and smiled. What an unexpected compliment! She would have disagreed on the spot, but Lelianna continued.
“What a sweet young woman you are, Lelianna!” She said with a laugh. “It would be rude of me not to accept such high praise. Some days are harder than others, but like your garden, most of the time Haven runs itself. I’m more of a caretaker than a leader.”
She looked out the window at Haven once more. The market bustled happily, children played, and elderly folks chatted with one another. She hummed for a moment before bringing her teacup to her lips and finishing off the warm, fruity liquid. “I never expected to be in this position,” she said. “But life is full of unexpected things, is it not? I spent most of my life as a priestess, a spiritual woman, and a mother… Never a leader in anything but prayers. But I suppose our brothers and sisters saw something in me that I did not. I refused the position, you know. Vehemently refused it. But now that I am here, I could not imagine doing anything else.”

► "Fiamma!" The hermit confirmed once she was able to speak. Oh, it had been so long since she'd seen her other hermit neighbor! Hopefully she was doing alright. Oh, and Cadence! Goodness, the druid really had met quite a few people this past year, hadn't she? "Yes, she's really nice! Her girlfriend's also very sweet. Shoot, I feel like I should say hi to both of them at some point." Frowning now, Lelianna thought it over. Didn't Cadence mention living in... Dagos? That would make things a little harder for the hermit to be able to see her again then.
Look at her; having friends now.
Nodding in understanding, Lelianna took a few more sips and bites out of what was set before her (this place was good for sure). Caretaker, huh? Yeah, that sounded about right. Well, sort of. Arecia was also Lelianna's caretaker in it's own way. Guess that just made one big caretaking cycle? Eh, close enough.
As Cherche spoke Lelianna found herself nodding along. "Looks like you're doing a great job. Everyone in Haven usually looks so happen whenever I manage to come here." Like Cherche she glanced out a window a moment and smiled. "I also kinda get what you mean. A-About not being able to imagine doing anything else. I never thought I'd come to Arecia but now I... Well I can hardly think about leaving it any more. It's done so much for me it's just... it's home now." Home sweet home (okay maybe occasionally mischievous and willing to prank the poor hermit into oblivion, but yeah).
"I'm glad Haven's technically 'inside' Arecia Woods so I can visit it. Otherwise I'd probably never meet anyone." Though the hermit joked she also realized that... yeah that was probably the truth. Kinda sad, actually. "...Well except for some of the other hermits maybe. Though I guess I only found them cause they were going to Haven or something like that." Now Lelianna was frowning, puzzled. "...Speaking of which I really have been meeting more people this past year. Which is kind of... strange for me. Everything seems to be happening this year." And honestly now that she thought about it, she was not doing the greatest job of being a hermit, was she? "At least people don't shed as much." Pause. "...I realize that sounds really weird. Does that sound weird?" Good grief, Leli.

“Ha, you never want for things to do when you have good friends. Quite a change from the hermit lifestyle, isn’t it? Ah, it’s a good thing, though; at the end of the day, you’ll never regret making friends.”
The compliment was well-received by the older magi, drawing a contended, earnest smile from her wrinkled lips. “The people of Haven are wonderful and kind; truly, I do not do much; the city runs itself. Everyone has experienced such tragedy, and with it, developed kindness within their hearts. I could not ask for a better place to call home.” She took a slow sip of her tea and nodded once. “I am glad you found the same; many spend their lives searching, so to feel so content at a young age is a gift from Arithelia herself.” She grinned for just a moment before filling her mouth with a small bite from a pastry. Lelianna was a special magi, indeed. Who knew what the goddess had planned for her?
Cherche erupted into a dry laugh at Lelianna’s comment. “I suppose they don’t! Well, some. I swear my wife lost half her hair every time she showered.” Her snickering ended with a pleased sigh; she needed that. “Ah, but perhaps even Arecia recognizes that you need to meet people, mm? It seems to be working out for you, regardless. I’m glad; you are much too pleasant company to spend your life alone.”
Cherche turned from the window to the table. “I’ve taken enough of your time today, my dear. Thank you for humoring an old woman’s request for company; I hope you will join me for tea and conversation another time. May the goddess go with you, Lelianna.”
With that, Cherche waved over at the owner, and he prepared a few bags of Cherche’s favorite blend, which the leviathan promptly gave to Lelianna as a small gift (Whether she protested it or not). The little break put Cherche in a pleasant mood, which would persist throughout the rest of the day. She, like the rest of Haven, had experienced unimaginable tragedy, but times like this grounded the old woman and reminded her that the here and now was wonderful; it would be a waste not to stop and enjoy it as often as one could.
Now, who else could she bother in the market today?
