There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? Taran heard the bit of confusion in Lelianna's voice and smiled warmly.
"Yes. The school is in Ikigai. I awakened as a magi when I was seventeen, and you might be able to picture what a fire magi is like when she doesn't know how to use her powers." She shrugged.
"It was a mess. Luckily I had already left home. When my traits came in, I was eager to learn so that I could protect myself. When I sought out the school though, they taught me that my powers are not solely for destruction. I've tried to keep up their teachings in the years since I've been away. Perhaps I may even attempt to teach." What had started as simply as an idea was actually gaining traction in Taran's mind. Perhaps she would end up going back to Ikigai. Or perhaps she would teach secretly somewhere else. She figured she probably wouldn't end up teaching in Ethea. Or at least not Felici or Dagos. She would be far too afraid of hunters discovering herself and any students. She heard Lelianna comment about her family and Taran shrugged.
"It's unfortunate but it is what it is. My dad is gone now, so I guess the past is officially the past when that happens. Although the lines do blur quite a bit. I guess that tends to happen." Taran witnessed the change, the excitement in her guide and possibly her new friend. It was obvious the woman cared very much about the forest where she made her home.
"It must feel rather lucky to have a friend who cares so much about it. And to be clear, I didn't mean a mother. I meant...kind of a mothering friend. There's always that one friend that kind of acts like a mother would, y'know?" It was a musing, basically. But Taran thought the description fit the magi before her pretty well. She chuckled at the mention about fire magis.
"I'd imagine you wouldn't. Fire magi only like fighting about trees and their wood. Gives us something to burn. But nobody in their right mind would do that in Arecia Woods. This forest is just...magical. Special. Somewhat revered. It's an unspoken rule that nobody messes with it. Even if you have fire in your blood, you don't want to hurt such a place, with such significance." She looked around.
"How big is the forest? I'm just wondering where the temple is. I don't want to be a bother, taking up too much of your time." | |

So there really was a school for magi. Although Lelianna really had no idea where this Ikigai was. but hey, if it actually had a school dedicated to teaching magi how to control their magic, than surely it had to be pretty neat! At least it had taken the effort to try and teach new magi how to better control their magic rather than simply expect them to be flawless with it. But we're getting off track: Lelianna smiled at Taran and shrugged a little. "Well, that sounds like a good idea. I mean, we all learn control one way or another, but actually having a school is really nice. Makes trial and error learning a little less...ah, disastrous."
Yeah no one was ever going to find out about the ceiling incident.
So change of topic it was. Although honestly, Lelianna wasn't so sure if the new topic was much better. Despite how nonchalantly she seemed to say it, Lelianna couldn't help but feel a wave of sympathy go through her. She'd lost her own father too. But again they changed the topic before Lelianna could do more than look worried.
"Well I do love it." She admitted openly. She did love Arecia woods. It had provided her safety and comfort in one of her most vulnerable and darkest of moments. After the incident, Lelianna had felt so lost and...well frankly hopeless. Arecia had helped her a lot back then, and despite it's consistent love for pranking her it still helped her even now. She was glad to hear Taran talk about revering it. The remark put a soft, approving smile on her face that lit up her eyes. "I'm glad you think that way." She said sincerely. In that moment she could honestly forgive Taran for what had happened earlier. It was rare enough to find someone who held the forest in such esteem to call it magical.
So no, she really didn't mind too much to take Taran to the temple. "No no, it's fine. I can take you there I promise. Just let me go and put my stuff away at home." She said. They were nearing it anyways, first getting to Lelianna's large and wild garden. It was still waking up from winter like the rest of Arecia, but it was easy to see the enormous variation spread throughout the garden. "Wait here just a sec. Just need to drop this off." She said before hurrying further into the garden towards her home."

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? "Yes well I thought it was best to go there. I didn't have the benefit to gradually figure out my powers as I got older. I was a no-maj until I was seventeen. So suddenly having control over fire? I didn't really want to burn anything down. Although...I do recall singing one of my professors' moustaches. That was unfortunate. I wasn't exactly teacher's pet for that guy, you might say." She chuckled at the thought. Fortunately it hadn't been too serious. She heard the woman speak about how she was glad Taran had that outlook about the forest. And then Lelianna spoke about how she didn't mind showing Taran where the temple was and Taran couldn't help but grin. It showed off her slightly longer canine teeth for sure, but she was in Arecia Woods. And she was around an Earth magi. She felt quite a bit of freedom. When Lelianna told her to wait where she was while she put something away, Taran nodded amiably. Taran stretched her arms behind her head, realizing the gloves she had on weren't really needed. She took them off, letting her hands, and therefore also her claws breathe. She talked to herself.
"I'm too used to living in cities. Out here, I can be free. No-one to criticize my traits, or discriminate against me. I feel free for once." She liked the city, don't get her wrong. But it was nice not having to hide sometimes. It had been a while since she'd had the luxury to let loose.

Giggling at Taran's story, Lelianna had to imagine what a scene like that would look like. Burning off a teacher's mustache? Or even just singeing it a little? Although Lelianna didn't have a face to put it to, she'd met enough people with mustaches in Suraja to picture what something like that would look like. It was definitely funny. "Thankfully I don't have a mustache for you to attack." She teased almost playfully, smiling at Taran before turning towards where she knew her home would be.
While she was particularly proud of her garden, there was still a little distrustful part of her that didn't want Taran seeing her home. Hey, they'd walked in on the redhead bathing! She was allowed a little bit of hesitancy. So once Taran seemed fine with the idea, Lelianna moved onwards and essentially vanished into the woods. Her massive garden followed soon after, as did her home. Her abode was quite literally merged with the trees, having been shaped by them and Lelianna's powers. It originally had been someone's cottage, but long since abandoned and reclaimed by Arecia. Now Lelianna resided within with nature still growing ever abundantly around it and upon it. She couldn't have asked for a better home.
Although maybe one with a taller doorway. After Lelianna returned her things (and hit her head off the top of the door frame again of course) she headed back to find Taran. Who thankfully had not wandered off during this time. Rubbing the base of her antlers a little, wincing from her earlier impact, Lelianna nonetheless flashed Taran a kind smile. "Right! Ah, the temple's just this way." She said with a flick of her head to indicate the direct before she started heading off that way.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? A mustache for her to attack? She chuckled at the wording of that. Yes, she was a regular mustache vigilante. The crusade against facial hair. Very very important cause, you see. She smiled at the thought while her guide was putting stuff away. Then, she saw the earth magi come back out and heard the words about going to the temple and Taran nodded. She'd stayed in the same spot like she'd supposed to. By her logic, she certainly didn't want to get lost in the woods again. She was obviously quite crappy directionally in the forest. Taran saw the woman rub her antlers and she arched an eyebrow.
"Are you okay? Like are your antlers okay? You hurt 'em or something?" She always liked to check after all. The woman started off back on the path and Taran nodded, bounding a bit after the woman. The excitement of the moment was rather contagious, she could feel it.
"It's nice out here. Despite my getting lost, I see why you might like it better. No need to hide magi traits out here. While you were away I stretched my claws a bit." Her tail wagged at remembering she was less likely to be exposed to discrimination based on race.
"Do you go to the temple here often? You're closer than most, so I guess I'm curious. I'm a pretty devout follower of Arithelia. These powers have gotten me out of some tough scrapes after all. Least I can do is be grateful right?"

► "Huh? Oh I just, ah....Just hit them off my door frame....again." She muttered the last part while giving her antlers one last rub. It happened way more often than Lelianna wanted to admit. Although it was nice for Taran to be concerned about her. So Lelianna flashed her a small smile. "Thanks for asking though."
Now back to the journey!
The excitement coming off of her companion was nearly palpable. Taran must've really really wanted to get to the temple. I mean, Lelianna wasn't one to complain about that. Arithelia was the goddess of magi. It was just surprising to see such enthusiasm. Maybe she was just used to the people from Haven who got to go there whenever they really pleased.
"Yeah, it's really nice out here." Lelianna agreed with a happy smile. She didn't need much to start praising the forest, so frankly it was best not to get her started. But again it was nice to have someone with her who appeared to really appreciate nature. But thankfully Lelianna was drawn out of possibly going into a trance by Taran's question. "Huh? Oh, yeah I get to the temple every now and then." Truthfully, Lelinanna actually didn't spend nearly as much time there as someone might imagine. "I....Honestly I like this temple better." She gestured around her to the surrounding wildlife. Looks like she'd get to brag about nature after all. "Arithelia is also the goddess of nature, right? Well...I'm always surrounded by it. True it might not be as...well, official as the real temple but....b-but I like it. Maybe just as much as the monks who tend to the real temple like the temple. N-Not that I'm saying the temple isn't great or anything! Really, it's very pretty!" The redhead scrambled to say. "I just....really like being out here much better."

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? Hit them on her door frame? Taran arched an eyebrow. She supposed that would be a problem that came with having antlers as a magi trait. They were quite striking regardless though, she had to admit.Maybe the door frame wasn't made of livewood and the woman couldn't readjust her door frame? It was possible. More than possible really. It was probable. But never mind her musings, her guide was speaking again. Apparently she didn't go too often to the actual temple. At least that's what Taran got from the hesitancy in her speech.
"I suppose going to a physical temple isn't for everyone. And you do make an excellent point about Arithelia being the goddess of nature as well as magi. Sometimes I revel in nature as well. But there are times where I feel like a journey to worship shows how devoted I am. It probably only matters to me, and not to the goddess. But a pilgrimage makes me feel like I'm doing something, you know?" Something about taking a journey always seemed to invigorate her too. Her guide was stammering some mixture of apologies and excuses and Taran shook her head with a smile to dispel the need for that hopefully.
"I do understand. Everyone has their own way of worshipping. I am not someone who is willing to judge someone based on that. Besides, it is technically safer for a magi to worship in private anyway." She shrugged. She could understand the sentiment, really she could. Taran just happened to subscribe to a different way of thinking. And she wasn't dumb enough to think her way was the only way.
"So the temple's pretty huh? I guess I'll get to see it. It's my first time. I didn't even know it existed until someone told me. Part of why I'm doing this. The temples in the city are horribly run down. They're unsafe to visit for the most part as well. A popular place for hunters to lie in wait, I've been told. I'd rather keep my head on my shoulders and my tail wagging thank you very much." She chuckled.

► Huh. That made a bit of sense. A pilgrimage was all about the journey and whatnot, and show someone's devotion to their god. Lelianna nodded a little at that, her mind temporarily drifting off even as she started to sputter out her "apology." It made her question a few things about her hermithood for a moment. Was this...technically like some sort of devotion to Arithelia? No...Probably not.
Lelianna hadn't exactly come to Arecia to devote herself to the goddess initially after all.
At least Taran was there to pull the girl out of her own head before she started getting too far submerged in her thoughts. She smiled a little at Taran's "joke," though it was kind of an ugly truth. But the redhead didn't want to linger too much on that. So instead she focused on the one good part she could talk about: the temple. "Oh yes it's very pretty. Entirely made out of natural materials to keep it connected with nature." She described, her smile coming easier as she thought about it. "it really is a beauty; whoever designed it did a fantastic job." And thankfully it hadn't been destroyed or become run down. "The ones who tend to it make sure it stays in excellent condition. A lot of the people from Haven go their to pay homage. Sometimes a recognize a few. I'm sure you'll love it." Lelianna assured. It would be hard not to be impressed by the grand sight anyways.
For the remainder of their journey, whether they made small talk or not, Lelianna kept up a relatively good pace. She knew these woods wonderfully well, having lived in them for so long. It didn't take them too long before she finially spotted the cathedral like structure of the temple ahead through some of the thicket. Raising a hand, Lelianna pointed and sent Taran a triumphant smile. "There it is! Arithelia's Grand Temple." She announced. They were only a few minutes away from it at this point, though Lelianna slowed her pace down once the temple came in sight.

There's FIRE Dancing in my veins tonight, do you see it in my eyes tonight? All natural material? Well that was certainly environmentally conscious, and also just what she'd expect from a place of worship to Arithelia. She was happy to hear it was beautiful and well kept. She didn't think her heart could've handled seeing another temple to her beloved goddess all run down. It hurt her heart everytime just to see the one in Dagos. And that one wasn't even as badly off as Felici's. She had never gone to the one in Felici, only seen pictures. She tried to avoid searching it on the internet now.
The rest of the journey to the temple was peppered with companionable silence and some small talk. Taran couldn't quite put her finger on the last time she was this relaxed around someone, but it was nice. When the temple came into view, Taran's eyes widened and a hand flew to her mouth.
"Oh my goddess it's beautiful. Exactly what she deserves." Her hand slowly made its way down, revealing a giant beaming smile behind it. She looked at the woman with her.
"It was very kind of you to show me the way. Thanks again for that." She almost said something about looking Taran up if she was ever in town. But she had no idea how long the hermit had been out here. If she'd been out here for a long time, giving her full name might end with Lelianna accidentally asking a racist and leading them to Taran. Instead, she decided on a completely different approach.
"If you wouldn't object, I might come back and visit sometime. Even this short time in the forest has been relaxing, and I've enjoyed our conversation too. I won't impose if you truly like being alone though. And I really am sorry for earlier. First impressions being very bad and all that."

392 wordsTaran consider it wrapped ► Seeing the awe in the other magi's face made the smile on Lelianna's face grow all the more. She remembered the first time she had seen it. The redhead's reaction had been very similar. Though now that she'd lived in the forest for so long, she didn't react so strongly to the sight anymore. Not only from seeing the temple over a handful of times, but also because she'd found things of equal beauty besides this to show off nature's beauty, and thus Arithelia's.
Turning her head Lelianna blinked as Taran mixed a "thank you" with an apology. While a few minutes ago Lelianna would've likely tried chucking her staff at the fellow magi's head, now she had calmed down enough to see past that. though the faintest bit of color did spread on her face remembering how they met. Waving off Taran's apology (really, she didn't want to bring that up more than she absolutely had to) Lelianna shrugged. "It's alright. I know what it's like to want to come here and then getting to finally see it for the first time." She really could. "And if you really do want to visit, you can." The notion the other magi had even considered doing so was....honestly really nice to hear. Though a wry smile came to her expression as she arched a brow. "Though maybe next time you can refrain from watching me bathe, huh?" Yes she was still embarrassed about that whole thing, but this was too perfect the chance to joke with it. And didn't jokes help take the sting out of things anyways?
With her job complete, Lelianna took a step back. Visiting the temple today wasn't exactly in her schedule. Much as she liked the place, she didn't feel as drawn to it as some others were. No, instead it was Arecia that drew her far more so. Almost uncannily so maybe, but then again Lelianna couldn't really tell from living there for so long. She offered Taran a kind smile and a nod while she started to turn. "I hope you enjoy the temple, and find everything you hoped to. Safe travels!"
With that the antlered hermit headed back into the thick of the woods and soon vanished among the greenery; her home and her temple.
