[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]After a long afternoon of training at the Loch, Drew knew that he still had more work ahead of him. Lilith was eating a fairly bizarre diet these days, and she didn't have the strong stomach she used to. If he brought home a dead animal, he'd end up cleaning up vomit again. The smell of it made even his stomach swim. As a result, he had to catch and eat his kill away from home, if he wanted to get any meat. He made enough money to buy from the butcher in normal times if he wanted to, but with the odd cravings Lilith had been having, the food budget was a little thinner than normal. Leaving his sword against a tree, he pulled a hunting knife to begin the stalk.
The sun would be going down in a couple of hours, and that meant that the diurnal prey would be heading back to their usual dens, where they would be a lot harder to track. Moving through the trees and undergrowth with the ease of a lot of practice, he soon found a game trail, complete with the recent scent of deer. It was heading away from the water, which meant that he wouldn't be getting lucky today. He picked up the pace, hardly noticing when he passed into a more densely forested area. The scent was confused here, with a lot of fragrant flowers making the trail harder to follow.
He persisted. The sun was on the horizon by the time his knife met the deer's spine, and he lowered the body to the ground as it gave a last few feeble kicks. He knelt beside it, licking blood from his thumb. The scent of fresh blood brought the wolf to the surface, as always. His eyes had no trouble seeing in the fading light, but they looked more wolfish than usual as he pulled the knife from the body and cleaned it on the deer's pelt. He slid the blade back into the sheath, his eyes a golden amber hue. The next knife he pulled out was thinner, with a more fragile edge. His skinning knife was no good in hunting, because the edge would break if pressed too hard, but it was perfect for cleaning a kill.
He would have started the process, but he smelled something alien on the wind. Magi... It was a Magi, just barely discernible between the floral scents that made him feel like he had rose petals up his nose. Instinctively, he growled, a low and wolfish sound that was hard to connect with a humanoid body. He didn't like having someone approach him when he was with a fresh kill, and his Wolf was so close to the surface.

486 words @drew Please don't eat me; I'm too stringy! ► Lelianna had actually been quite busy today. Turned out that a few trees had been cut down and apparently the forest was not too happy with that. The redhead had taken up her staff and a bunch of seeds before heading off to help them grown. The smell of spring was ever fresher in the air, so that had made her day's work a little better for her to bear. After remaking that patch of the forest she'd returned to her garden to do some work she personally was looking forward to.
Aka expanding and replanting!
With the new batch of seeds she'd gotten from Haven not too long ago the hermit was only eager to start spreading them out. In particular she was planting flowers today, carefully using her powers to speed up the growth and make sure they were firmly planted. To be honest she was perfectly happy in that moment. Maybe she was a bit dirty from kneeling down in the dirt. Her hands certainly were, covered up to her wrist in brown splotches from using her hands. Maybe she smelled like a wild mixture of flowers from the wide variety she was currently drowning in at this section of her garden. Maybe it was getting a little late and the girl hadn't even noticed. All that really mattered in that moment was how content she felt.
Until she got wind of something being up.
The birds were always a sign. Not that far from her she heard the fluttering of a decent number of winds taking off and rustling the leaves. The hermit's head immediately snapped to the side. What had them all flying suddenly? Feeling curious Lelianna used her nearby staff to get up. "Oooooooo, ow ow ow- pins and needles! Pins and needles!" She hissed, the feeling in her legs coming painfully back. Just leave it to her legs to fall asleep while she'd been gardening. Once she'd felt confident enough to move though, she did.
Lelianna approached the scene cautiously, moving through the shrubbery and thicket as silently as she could. gratefully this time Arecia decided to show her some mercy; her antlers didn't get stuck even once! Eventually she did reach the scene of Drew's kill. And the moment she did her eyes widened. "Oh!" Was the first ever-intelligent thing to tumble from her motion. To her credit though, she hadn't been expecting this. An animal, maybe, but not another magi. Although it was one sounding rather close to an animal at the moment so maybe there wasn't much of a difference. Still, he hadn't attacked her yet.
But he looked close to it.
She held up her empty hand, palm outward, in a placating gesture. "U-Um, hey I don't mean any harm or anything!" She promise with a nervous smile. "I, ah, just was investigating why the birds all flew off."

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]Drew took a cautious breath, taking in her scent more from instinct than from any hope of gaining more information. All that he found was information that he already had guessed. Female, earth Magi. The scent of blood overwhelmed any other possible scent, and his nose twitched as he tried to tear his thoughts from it. His tail swished as he thought, but it was like looking through a fog, trying to string human thoughts together. Digging his claws into the palm of his hand, he pressed in until he could smell his own blood blossoming there. The pain helped him to get a grip on himself, and he stood slowly, stepping away from the kill.
"I... I'm sorry," he said, his voice low and gravelly. "Didn't expect to see anyone."
The yellow stayed clear in his eyes as he put the knife away and took a few shallow breaths, trying to ignore the scent of blood that surrounded him. He backed away from her instead of crowding her, knowing in the rational part of his mind that he didn't want to hurt her. He was having a hard time convincing his instincts of that. She smelled all too similar to the deer he'd just killed, and it wasn't helping him regain control. Deer were among his favorite prey, because they provided so much meat, and they were so numerous in the woods. She smelled like... venison. And flowers. Focus on the flowers, not the meat.
He lowered his head, forcing himself to take deep breaths. The scent of flowers was stronger the more steps he took away from the deer, and it helped him think a little more clearly. Once he lifted his eyes again, the irises had returned to their normal dark brown, and the claws had receded mostly. His tail swished slowly, evidence that he wasn't all the way back yet, but he was doing his best.
"I'm sorry," he apologized again, pulling out a cloth to clean the blood from his hands.
It took all of his self control not to lick the blood from his fingers, but he kept his jaw clenched tightly shut to eliminate the temptation. The white cloth was stained red by the time that he finished with it, and he ignited it on his fingertips, before watching the flames consume it entirely. He wiped his hands of the ash before returning his attention to the woman, this time able to look at her as more of a person, instead of potential prey.

486 words @drew I taste terrible I assure you ► After saying her piece, Lelianna remained right where she was and continued to show she was coming no further or meant to interrupt the man's kill. She'd dealt with packs of wolves before. Bastan had been wary with her in the beginning. Only over time had she been able to be accepted by the taveling pack of canines. And seeing this magi's long black tail made her instantly suspect he was part wolf too. And yes, Lelianna was well aware that she shared aspects with the animal currently lying in a bloody heap near his feet.
Could you blame her for treating this cautiously?
As Drew backed away and apologized, the hermit still remained exactly where she was. Wary. Alert. Desperately hoping the man could control himself. The forest was reacting to her mood. She could feel and hear the subtle creaks and groans of the branches around her. Sense the low and steady hum in the back of her mind of the greenery's awareness alongside her. Hopefully she wouldn't have to defend herself. But if she needed to? She would.
Luckily it appeared she wouldn't have to. As Drew's body language started to shift into a less hostile state, Lelianna slowly and gradually relaxed her own. A long exhale of relief left her lips as she let the free hand drop to her side. Boy, she had not been expecting this. Or, frankly, the sheer amount of people she'd been running into lately. Really, her little crack theory about Arecia purposefully dragging people into the woods for her to meet and socialize with was quickly gaining more ground with her. Why else would she keep meeting strangers out here?
With Drew's second apology, Lelianna finally responded. "No no, it's okay. I....hadn't expected anyone either." She said, offering a tiny and friendly smile. Though there were still some nerves there. With a glance the green-eyed gaze flicked down from the wolf man to the deer. The smile faded instantly, her expression holding some sadness. She was always sad to see the death of any animal, but she understood the cycle. One did not live in nature for 8 years without seeing the cycle of life, death, and Darwinian selection at work. Besides, clearly this man had been hunting. Just hopefully for a valid reason and not purely wasteful killing.
And hopefully she wasn't next.
As Drew summoned the fire, she once more felt a little unease in her stomach. Though she figured it was due more to the nearby vegetation's reaction bleeding into her thoughts than her own fear. Once the flame was gone she felt a little better. She also felt better when he appeared to calm down further. Hey, his eyes even changed color! That was new. She waited a beat before after, still maintaining her distance: "Do you feel...better now? Oh, and I'm Lelianna by the way." Maybe if she gave herself a name she wouldn't look so similar to the dead prey near Drew's feet. Maybe.

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]He grunted in response to her question, avoiding her eyes. Truthfully, he didn't have a firm enough grip on the line between the man and the Wolf to know the answer. But at least he seemed to have a handle on things for now. At her name, he lifted his eyes to her face again, noting that she still looked nervous. He couldn't really blame her for that. She could hardly fail to notice that she resembled the meal he'd been about to eat. From the groans of the trees around him, he suspected that she had a strong tie to the trees here, and the thought could only make him nervous, knowing how worried she was. She could turn the entire forest against him, and he was deep into the trees. Not exactly an advantageous position.
"Drew," he said, inclining his head by a couple degrees. "My name's Drew."
He looked down at the dead deer and swallowed. The scent was truly mouth-watering, and he was hungry. His head snapped up at her as he stopped his breath in his throat, forestalling the resurgence of the wolf's instincts.
"I need to get away from here," he said haltingly.
His fingers twisted the ring on the middle finger of his left hand as he walked away from the deer, unknowingly going deeper into her territory. All that he knew was that the scent of blood was heavy on the air, and he didn't want to hurt the girl. He didn't stop until the scent of blood was completely obscured by the heavy scent of greenery, and he sat down on the root of a tree, burying his face in his hands and rubbing his eyes. Gods... his hands still smelled of the deer's blood.
It had been eight years since he'd been in that horrific place, and he still couldn't handle living among people very well. There was the constant fear of losing control, which perversely made it harder to keep control. The blood... he couldn't live without it, and yet he hated himself for what it did to his thoughts. Would there ever be a day when he could live like a normal person, without the desire to draw blood?

501 words @drew Nature's perfume ► Drew. Ok, they were getting somewhere. Though Drew wasn't exactly meeting her eyes. He looked nervous. About as nervous as Lelianna felt. He'd probably heard the nearby trees and shrugs responding to Lelianna's nerves. She swore she wasn't going to attack him! It was just...a reflex.
Both of their eyes seemed to drop to the deer at the same time. Lelianna's still with a trace of sadness. Drew's though? His was hunger. The redhead looked up swiftly when Drew responded so suddenly. Then she watched him walk off. For a moment she started to raise her hand to tell him everything was fine. yet before that could even happen the words died behind her lips. No, he wasn't fine, clearly. He was trying to get away from her. maybe he was worried about reverting back to that kind of feral state she'd just seen?
It was a mutual fear.
So Lelianna sighed and let her hand drop back to her side. She noticed he started actually heading closer to the edge of her garden but she didn't mind. Instead the hermit turned her head back to the fallen animal. Approaching t she crouched down, her face turning a little sad again. She could understand everything died and things needed to hunt to survive. Still, she couldn't help but feel compassion for the creature. Extending a hand Lelianna rested it on the deer's head. "May you find better pastures." She murmured, shutting the creature's eyes before standing again.
Now then, time to confront the big bad wolf.
It was easy to follow his trail. Drew hadn't exactly been trying to sneak away from her when he'd hurried off. When she spotted him her walk slowed to a halt a little ways away. He'd basically ran off from the spot of his kill...Lelianna wracked her brain to try and figure out why. Other than his fear of turning again, it seemed. But why did he do that? Then it hit her. Smell. Wolves had a great sense of smell and he'd been alerted by her before she'd come into view. It must've been the smell of her deer aspect.
With that figured out (sort of; she was guessing), Lelianna reached into one of her pouches. She'd originally been planning to plant these inside her garden, but this seemed a better use. That and, hey, she could always expand! Tossing the seeds out near Drew and hoping he didn't think she was trying to attack him, Lelianna focused on the seeds as they hit the ground. Very quickly shoots of lavender sprung up from where the seeds had fallen, growing into their full bloom and bursting with their scent. Drew basically had himself a tiny ring of flowers now. After waiting a beat or two to let the smell expand, Lelianna finally spoke up. "I...hope that helps block the scent. I figured that must've been why you were, ah...reacting like that."

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]Drew tensed, and he dropped his hand to the knife at his belt as he smelled magic, but he didn't pull the weapon. Instead, he watched as rows of small plants grew in a circle around him. It wasn't until the purple petals started to blossom that he realized what the flowers were. Lavender. At first, the scent was pleasant, but then the full potency of them hit him, and he coughed, standing. Lord, it was like being punched in the face with flowers. The smell was so strong that it made his sinuses ache. But at least it drove the smell of blood far, far away. He looked over to see that the earth Magi had followed him, but her body language was far from aggressive.
"Uhhh... thanks," he answered her, looking down at the flowers.
He didn't really think about it until a heartbeat later, but then he realized that the area smelled more floral here than it did throughout the rest of the woods. Maybe this... Lelianna... was the reason for it. Did that make this end of the forest her territory? The Wolf in him didn't like the idea of being on someone else's territory, but then again, she wasn't exactly a predator. Not that it made her any less dangerous. A Magi was never as helpless as they looked. It was part of the reason that humans feared them so.
Lifting his eyes to look at her, he couldn't help but wonder what exactly she wanted from him. Was she just ensuring that he got off her territory? No, there was nothing confrontational about how she looked at him. Maybe she just wasn't used to seeing anyone in this neck of the woods. Often as he came through here, he didn't often see anyone.
"This... is your territory?" he inquired. "I don't mean to intrude."
He was slowly getting used to the floral scent, though it made him feel half-blind and smothered to be so completely surrounded by it. No one who lacked a sense of smell like his could understand what it was like, even with smells that were fairly benign. Most humans, and even most Magi, had pathetic senses of smell. They could only smell something if it was right in their face.

322 words @drew Moar hermits? ► Whoops! Maybe a little too much. She hadn't been too sure on how strong his senses were in comparison to a real wolf's so she figured it was better safe than sorry. But hey, it had clearly worked if he was coughing! Still her expression turned a little sheepish. "Uh.....Sorry I wasn't sure how much, ah, would be enough so....yeah."
Words. Look at how well she wielded them.
For a moment or two Drew just observed her and Lelianna wasn't sure what she should do. What he looking for something or-- oh he was asking a question. "My territory?" She repeated, glancing around. Well technically they were right next to her garden. And technically that was her territory? She'd never really thought of any part of the forest being "hers" but then again it...was sort of true. Maybe in animal terms. The creatures of the forest definitely recognized it, though she often let them in. So....yeah she guessed it sort of was her territory. "Um...Sort of. It's more over there." She pointed off to the side to where the edge of her garden and thus the garden itself lay. the vegetation certainly got thicker the closer they got towards it. "You're just on the outskirts of my garden so really, you're not intruding." She assured him.
"I just heard a commotion from the birds flying off a-and decided to investigate so....yeah." helplessly she shrugged. Speaking was not her strong suit here. "I-I swear I didn't mean to startle you or chase you off or anything. I just...was curious what...or who, I guess, was out here. Are you, um, from Haven?" Usually that was it. Or was this another hermit? or someone wandering in? Really the amount of people she was finding these days was startling. She felt like she was turning into Arecia's tour guide.

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]"Your 'garden'?" he repeated, looking in the direction she was pointing.
It certainly explained why everything smelled so strongly of flowers here. He was surprised that it wasn't swarmed with more bugs, considering how many flowering plants attracted them. But maybe it wasn't just the plants that smelled like that. Maybe the Magi herself was a source of the scent. His sinuses felt a little too fried to try to pick apart the mix of scents, so he didn't bother. Instead, he looked to the flowers that she wore on her person and guessed that his conjecture was probably accurate. How did people function, wearing scents that powerful on their person all the time? He decided that the normal sense of smell probably felt like walking around with tissues stuffed up their nose.
At the mention of Haven, he tilted his head, looking a little too much like the canine his tail suggested. The slight swish of his tail didn't do anything to dispel the notion.
"I work in Haven sometimes," he said. "I've never seen you there."
He probably would have noticed, potent as her scent was. Then again, being surrounded by that many Magi, he might not have. He tried not to focus too much on his senses when he was in the middle of town, knowing how it could make his life so much more difficult and interesting. It seemed like the world was getting more and more crowded, leaving little room for people like himself, who maybe shouldn't have been around a lot of people to begin with.
"I really am sorry for what happened back there," he said, shuffling uncomfortably. "Didn't know anyone lived out here, or I would have hunted elsewhere."
He was still hungry, which made it hard for him to take his mind off of the kill he'd left there under the trees. If he was lucky, nothing would come along and pick it over, but he hated to leave fresh meat sitting on the ground. Bugs were some of the first animals to take notice when something died.

370 words @drew Scratch him behind da ears ► "Yeah. I was working when I heard the birds and well...here I am." Here she was indeed. Talking to a wolf man who'd just slain a deer. A man who was really like a dog! I mean, look at that head tilt! It was almost adorable. Almost. He still seemed kinda scary, actually. Yet he seemed nice so maybe he was like Jason? Big but friendly. Just with a touch more wild in him than what Lelianna had seen of Jason
"Oh! I don't actually live in Haven." Lelianna explained. "I, ah, actually live out here in the woods." At least this time she didn't have to say hermit. Although with this guy's sense of smell, maybe he could already tell. She didn't smell bad did she? Shoot...
Before she could reflect more on her possible need to bath, Drew apologized again. Gods he looked so uncomfortable. Did he think Lelianna was going to scold him or something? Her features softened and she shook her head. Ironically his discomfort did wonders for her comfort! "Really it's fine, I promise." Hopefully she could assure him that she really was not horribly offended or anything. Whatever he was thinking for why she might possibly need these many apologies! "I mean, I can hardly claim a whole forest right?" Joking a little, she smiled. "Besides, hardly anyone knows I'm out here." However there was a pause and a pensive frown came to her face. "Although...lately I've been running into a lot of people." Again, her theory for Arecia dragging people over was only growing stronger.
But enough theories!
She shook her head to clear her thoughts again. Back to the present. Right, right. "It's perfectly fine if you hunt around her. You could head back and get your...kill now." She said, only hesitating a beat before the word. "In fact that...might be a good idea before anything else shows up to steal it." Like, oh she didn't know...a bear? Starts with an S? Ends in a Kjorn? that or any of the other animal inhabitants within Arecia.
Or hell even another person. They were apparently coming in droves recently. Thank goodness Lelianna wasn't the kind of hermit to expressively want isolation.

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]"Right," he responded, glancing over his shoulder to look toward the deer. "I should... should be okay now."
His head felt mostly clear, not clouded like it had when she'd first come upon him. He couldn't always figure out what would set off the wolf, but at least he knew when he was close to losing control. The scent of lavender would linger on him, which would help him keep his thoughts clear despite the blood that was certain to be there. He stepped carefully over the line of purple flowers, frowning as he did so. He had a bad feeling that she would have taken it badly if he stepped on any of her precious flowers, but he had pretty big feet, which complicated matters. He stepped on the tree root first, where no lavender was growing, so that he could step out a bit more easily.
"Thanks," he said again, giving her a wide berth as he headed back the way he'd come.
He didn't have a particularly clear fix on his own scent, since he was surrounded by it all the time and thus desensitized to it. Instead, he followed the flattened grass of his own footsteps. It wasn't long before the scent of blood returned to the air, but it was a lot heavier than he'd thought it should have been. He'd not injured it badly enough for this much blood to be on the air. Wary now, he slowed down and started walking toward the dead deer. Organs... the scent of fresh organs was in the air. And unfamiliar wolf. Was this their territory?
Stopping by a nearby tree, he saw a wolf pack tearing into his deer. His deer. A low growl rippled from his throat before he could stop it, and he stepped out in full view of the wolves. Big as wild wolves were, he was still bigger, and his tail stood out straight behind him as he identified the Alpha. He couldn't say how he knew... but he knew. The wolves had stopped in their meal to look at him, having heard his growl.

436 words @drew Now let's just hold on... ► Right. Hopefully he was okay now. Well enough that he didn't step all over the flowers Lelianna had just grown. So that was a good sign right? Though he still gave her a wide berth. The redhead flashed him a smile but a hint of concern was in there. If he still felt the need to give her a wide berth, was he still afraid he might jump her? Was he that in tune to his animal aspect? Granted, Lelianna hadn't seen too many others (considering she was , you know, a hermit). However with all her visits to Haven she'd never encountered someone quite like this.
She wasn't sure if she should say anything. Besides, what would she even say?
As Drew passed her, Lelianna fully intended to leave him be. If he had still seemed nervous getting near her, she didn't want to push her presence on him. However an uneasy feeling started to grow in the back of her mind. Lelianna frowned. That was coming from her connection with the plantlife. Was it trying to tell her something about Drew? Turning with a baffled and now wary expression Lelianna started making her way back after the big man. What could possibly-- Oh!
That was Bastan's pack!
Though a little hard to see from her point of view behind Drew (though when he moved it got easier), Lelianna could clearly make out Bastan as the leader of this particular group. She hadn't expected the pack to be around these parts now that winter was coming to an end! The big timber wolf and his pack indeed had turned to Drew as he growled and made his presence known. They weren't exactly happy with that and began to growl back in response. Lelianna could see they were spreading out to semi-encircle the other magi in case they needed to attack. Shoot, this might end very badly!
"Wait!" Lelianna called out, directing it at Drew. The sound of her voice drew some of the wolves' attentions towards her for a moment. Upon seeing her Bastan's ears perked up slightly in recognition. Thank the gods for small favors; he remembered her. Maybe she could diffuse the situation before it escalated? Unfortunately the wolves had already started eating away at the deer. Drew's prize for his hunt was basically ruined now, or at the very least lessened. "P-Please Drew." Lelianna wasn't so sure if he'd listen to someone he'd only just met, but there was definitely concern and minor panic in her plea. She'd rather not see either party hurt.

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]Drew backed up a step to keep all of them in sight, still growling. He'd never fought an entire pack before... This wasn't something he could do without weapons, much as his instincts told him to use his fangs and claws. His hand rested on the knife at his belt as they continued to advance, and he snarled a threat at them. He knew that they weren't too worried about him yet. He was alone, and he smelled like a lone wolf to any creature with the nose to recognize it, though he also smelled of pregnant mate. In the wild, that meant that he smelled like a competitor, someone who would steal their kills.
It didn't hurt that it was a fairly accurate assessment. He couldn't believe he'd missed their scent markers. It was possible that this wasn't really their territory, that they were looking to expand as the seasons turned, which made this something more of a territory claim. It was their new land, so what would he do about it? He couldn't afford to give up this stretch of land, considering how bountiful the prey ran through here.
He was about to draw his knife, and had it half out of the sheath by the time he heard Lelianna's voice. She didn't want him to hurt these, for some reason. It was ultimately her land, he supposed. He put the knife back where it belonged, his yellow eyes finding the Alpha again. If he couldn't attack, his options were limited. The wolves wouldn't leave him alone if he fled; they would chase him down to ensure he didn't come back. That meant that he had to drive them off instead.
His eyes glowed blue as he summoned magic to aid him. The ring on his finger, the Crest of the Draco, made his display all that much more impressive as he allowed pale blue fire to build and dance along his arms and across his shoulders. His shirt caught, adding to the inferno as he snarled at the Pack. Either they would leave, or they would all burn. The heat rolled off of him in a stifling wave, but he didn't feel it.

406 words @drew Fire + Woods = Bad ► Oh thank goodness, Drew had halted. Lelianna could breath a sign of relief from that. There was still Bastan and his pack to deal with though. That and the fact that Drew's kill had been heavily tasted by the wolves. That was certainly going to be a problem. Lelianna was about to go forward to see if she could talk Bastan down when Drew did the unexpected. Flames suddenly erupted along Drew's arms and up to his shoulders.
It definitely scared the wolves alright. Know who else it did? Lelianna.
At the impressive display of pale blue fire along the fellow magi's back, Lelianna's eyes instinctively widened. It was fire. In the woods. And not just a little flickering flame; she could feel the heat from where she was and had to take a few steps back to get away from it. It was hot! The gentle hum in the back of her head suddenly changed to blaring alarm as the greenery nearest to him felt the horrible heat coming off of those licks of flame. A few leaves close to him started to burn. Reacting almost instantly to this display, Lelianna extended her powers outward to the thicket around Drew. As though it had been slapped the greenery around him drew back. It created something akin to a bubble around the wolf magi, leaving enough space between the vegetation and the flames to prevent anything from burning further.
As the wolves ran off Lelianna further used her power to lift dirt from the ground to smother the few fires that had sprouted on the nearby leaves. If Drew had not dosed the flames by now, Lelianna would turn her head to him and, with a voice of torn horror, exclaim: "Drew!" If he had already put the flames out, her expression would still be the same. A mingled mixture of horror and panic, with the faintest bit of fear in her eyes. If that fire had actually caught...The redhead didn't even want to think of the possible mess that could have occurred. "Please...Be careful." Her voice was still shaky from the adrenaline rush she'd received from the scare. She could feel the panic from the plant-life around her starting to ebb as the flames and the danger did that same.
One of these days she was going to have a heart attack.

[attr="class","oho"] he paid dearly for his moment of paradise while knowing in his gut it could never last. [attr="class","monalisa"]As the wolves retreated, Drew narrowed the flood of magic until the flames went out, leaving his skin smoking from the remnants of the shirt. He looked down at himself for a moment, but tensed when he heard Leli's alarmed voice. He turned quickly, looking back and forth for some source of danger, but there didn't seem to be any. Glancing down at the ground around him, he saw the scorched leaves and grass, and made a sharp inhale. It was him. He was what had scared her so badly. Gritting his teeth, he extinguished whatever small smolder there might have been left over. At her admonishment, he said nothing, but turned away from her reaction so she wouldn't see how much it hurt him to have people look at him like that.
Instead, he knelt next to the deer to examine the damage. The kill was a loss. It had been all but shredded, with the organs drug out and half-devoured. He wouldn't be carrying it anywhere, unless he took a dozen trips. He rested his hand on the cooling pelt, sighing. His hand was coated with gray soot, and as he noticed it, he remembered his shirt. There were holes lining the entire surface of it, but he didn't have a replacement on him. He'd left his armor and sword along the trail, because it was impossible to move stealthily with that kind of weight.
One would think he would have learned to carry an extra shirt by now. Ever since he'd started actively learning to use his magic, it had become a recurring problem. In the absence of an extra, he just left the tattered shirt on. Fortunately, there was more than enough ash to disguise the scarred skin underneath.
"Sorry to have made such a mess," he finally said, standing. "I'll be out of your way."
He stayed at a safe distance from her, not lifting his eyes to look at her again. Safe for her. He wasn't afraid of her, but he could still smell her fear in the air. It was enough to make him hate himself for what he'd done. He didn't mind scaring the people who wanted to hurt him or his wife, but it hurt when innocent people were afraid of him, too. They couldn't know that he didn't want to hurt them. It was best... just to leave them alone.
