This kill order shouldn’t have been as difficult as it was turning out to be. Some washed up excuse for a gangster shouldn’t have been nearly as smart as this one was. It should’ve been simple to eliminate the worthless half-sibling of the mob boss that hired him, and yet the rat had eluded him at every turn; the rat was far smarter than his shoddy intel had led him to believe. He wasn’t sure who gathered the information for him, but it would be his recommendation that the man be replaced. As things stood, it appeared that he’d be relying on his own wits to find and eliminate his target, which meant getting some proper intel. Seeing as all his leads had been dead ends, he figured that he should start fresh and find a few waging tongues with some secrets to share.
It was that thought that brought him to the red light district and the brothels therein. Valkorion knew well enough that a man usually let his guard down when the pleasures of the flesh were involved. After all, the women (and sometimes men) whose time and services they enjoyed were nothing more than whores. What could they possibly do with the information they let slip between the sheets. It was an oversight that a few of the ladies knew how to use to their advantage. There were many ways to loosen their tongues; money was only one of them. Now it was only a matter of choosing which establishment would be the best for his purposes. |

A little bird had told her about an arrangement that he was involved with, and the opportunity couldn’t be better. She wanted the same target dead, and happened to know things that may not have been mentioned to the man… Things he would be quite interested in hearing. She waited outside a strip club, leaned against a wall and smoking a cigarette with her hood up. Last reports saw him in the area, probably hunting for leads, but perhaps to take a break of his own. She rolled up her hoodie’s sleeve and checked the monitor embedded into her cybernetic arm. She had wanted to make a contact like this for some time, something beyond a simple shadowed voice from behind a phone. As much as she hated being in person, especially with such a dangerous man, it was the only way to properly secure any sort of trust for the long-term business she wished to establish. It wasn’t long before he crossed her path, looking for a good joint to ask questions. However, it would be unnecessary. She exhaled a cloud of sweet-smelling smoke. “You’re wasting your time, Valkorion,” she said, hoping to stop him. “He hasn’t been enjoying company here for over a week, now. But he’s made more enemies than just his half-brother; walk with me if you want to find him.” She pushed herself off the wall and started off down the sidewalk, opposite of where Valkorion was headed. He eyed the woman that spoke to him from the corner of his eyes and zoomed the optics to better note the individual features of her face and commit them to memory. It was difficult to discern everything through the press of crowds but he saw enough that he’d easily recognize her again. “And what would someone such as yourself know about such things, hmm?” He listened carefully to the woman for something in the way of an answer. While what he heard wasn’t entirely to his satisfaction, it did pique his interest. What did the woman know?
She told him to walk with her if he wished to know where his target was hiding. The gall of it normally would’ve offended his pride but he could easily ignore the presumption if it meant that his contract would be fulfilled. Valkorion weighed the possible advantages of following the woman against the possible advantages of ignoring her and proceeding with his previous plan to mingle with the sex workers in the district. He decided that the latter option was much less appealing and decided upon trailing his new green-haired acquaintance. If she knew something, it would hasten the accomplishment of his task; if not, then he would simply abandon her like the useless fool that he half expected she was. In the end, there was little harm that could come of it save for wasted time.
“It seems that you have me at something of disadvantage,” he said. “You know my name, and while I’m curious as to how that is, I would much rather know to whom I’m speaking.”

She carried forward at her own pace, leading the man down public roads (for now), further into the red light area. “Knowing things is my job,” she said. “Most people around here know me as the Spider, or some other dramatic nickname. Not my choice. Call me Mae.” She smoked as lazily as she walked. “You're not a subtle man, Valkorion,” she said. “I know everyone you've worked for, as well; I would be a poor information dealer if I did not recognize you.” She was putting a lot of information out there herself, she knew. And that was fine; perhaps if he was cocky, he may think of it as a weakness. If not, that was fine too; the important thing now was to gain just enough trust to get him to the destination she had in mind. That, too, was why she stuck to public areas, even if it was a bit out of the way. “And I know your current employer, too. There's more to this job than you know, but I'm sure you're itching to find him first,” she continued. “Fact is, he's made more enemies than just his half-brother. I'm not one of them, but an associate of mine is; you and I have the same objective. Problem was that I'm no good with a gun, and you couldn't find him. This is easier than hiring someone else to race you to him.” Which was and wasn't true. She knew plenty of killers who shot well and asked no questions, but Valkorion was a cut above the rest of them. Truth was, she wanted to establish contact more than anything. She sucked out the last bit of light from her cigarette and flicked it to the side. How interesting. “Very well, Miss Mae, to what do I owe this most auspicious meeting, hm?” Vakorion didn’t have to wait long for his answer and he contented himself with listening to the proffered explanation while taking in the enticingly provocative attractions for which the district was so famous. Perhaps a return trip to sample the many wares on display would be in order after this debacle of employment was over and done with.
“Very few of my chosen jobs require subtly of any sort,” Valkorion continued. “As a matter of fact, most of them call for the why and how to be known to make some abstract point or another to certain parties.” He shrugged absentmindedly. “Such is the way of the more savage side of societies underbelly. Not that I would be surprised if such an infamous persona knew my identity and proclivities in either case.” They walked on, continuing down more public and open streets rather than the darker path he had no doubt existed; it was a game that he was quickly growing tired of, but sometimes patience had its place in his line of work and this was one of those rare times that he would allow himself to be led on in this manner; what he stood to gain far outweighed the loss of his time.
Valkorion chuckled as he caught his new companion in what was at least partially a lie. There were dozens of hired guns to be had for those that knew where to look, and he had no doubt that Mae had at least some knowledge of where to find them. “Well, isn’t it flattering that you would think of me rather than any of the other gun-toting thugs." |

No matter how good you were, you didn’t last long if you weren’t smart about things. “Such is the way,” she echoed. Know when to stay hidden, know when to apply pressure; often the threat was worse than the action, and Maevia was no stranger to that. A mere mention of her persona carried more weight than a gun in Dagos, and often elsewhere. It was time to delve off the main roads into the side alleys. They walked by silent homeless people, gang members who thought they were sneakier than they were, and trashheaps that no doubt contained a few bodies. Welcome to Dagos. “I’m not here to flatter you, Valkorion,” she stated. “I wouldn’t waste either of our time. You are simply the better and more reliable option. And so that brings me to my proposition.” She slowed down to a stop and leaned against a wall. “If you keep walking with me, I will lead you to your target. In return, I simply want you to lend me your ear when you are finished. I have some information, and a further offer, that I am certain you will find both intriguing and very beneficial. If you do not want me to keep you any longer, I will depart now, and leave you to your hunt.” Of course, there was the third option of Valkorion leading her by gunpoint to his target’s hideout, but she wasn’t dumb enough to wander down a dark alley alone with an unknown variable. Several of the bystanders were on her payroll, simply as a precaution. But she didn’t think Valkorion would do that; it didn’t seem to be his MO, and as he already proved, he wasn’t a fool. He would know she wasn’t unprepared, and there was one thing most people who worked in the underbelly heard at least once during their work. But that can wait until after your quarry has been dealt with. Your questions will be answered openly, Valkorion, if you decide to stay and speak with me.” She lit another cigarette and expelled a cloud of smoke with her response. “Information is everything. Power is only the most obvious byproduct. Your ambition is as freely mentioned as your skill in many circles, so yes, I am fully aware. I see this as an opportunity for us both. Some of your employers, however, see this as a threat, short-sighted as they are. Let us continue.” With a slight motion for him to follow, she pushed off the wall and continued down the alley. The cigarette in her mouth twitch as she smirked. “You’re not the only one who is an expert in the ways of the underbelly. Needless risks are a good way to end up in a shallow grave. I’m sure you understand taking precautions.” They did not have to walk far, a block or two at most, down some winding alleys and across quiet roads, past squatters and hushed deals, surrounded by poorly cared-for buildings and small makeshift shanty communities. They eventually came to a stop in front of an unassuming, boarded up building. By then, Mae’s sweet-smelling cigarette was done, and she flicked it towards the door. “He’s inside,” she said, her voice lowered. “Waiting on an important message that isn’t coming. He’ll be alone, though I doubt unarmed.” She motioned over to a bench which overlooked a small, dirty canal. “I’ll be over there when you’re done.” She nodded, leaving the professional to his work with lazy strides towards the bench. She’d only get in the way if she went in, and wouldn’t dream of telling the expert how to do his work. He could go quick or slow, using whatever methods he preferred. Though he knew that the assessment Maevia had just given was ultimately the most correct one, it still irked him that she sought to correct him. He knew that it was only his pride getting the better of him, but it did little to change the fact that the woman had seen fit to contradict what he’d surmised—even if it was a small, nigh infinitesimal variance of thought. [break][break] Despite himself, the android ran several calculations to determine his odds of survival if he were to attack the woman. The act itself was simple enough when he accounted for the crossbow bolts loaded into the contraption strapped to his each of his forearms. They were easily concealable under the long-sleeved shirt he wore and useful as weapons of last resort or quick assassinations. Tempting, but there were other considerations to consider as well, such as the obvious possibility that they were watched. Any number of the bystanders in the immediate area could be on Maevia’s payroll and that only accounted for those that he could easily see; the possibility of a sniper being well out of his concealed weapons’ limited range. Hundreds of scenarios played out in his processors and all of them pointed to the same grim conclusion. [break][break] No, the risks were to great and he stood to gain far more than he could ever hope to gain. He would allow the slight to go unanswered. [break][break] Instead, Valkorion smiled his understanding, confident that the three or four seconds his internal deliberations wouldn’t easily show on his face. “Of course. The gun hidden in his waistband barked once as his whole body seized before he slid to the ground, gargling and flailing as he choked on his own blood. Both hands came to the shaft embedded in his throat in a vain attempt to staunch the crimson flow that seeped between his fingers. When the thrashing and flailing was finally at an end, he ripped a dirty cushion from a nearby chair, placed it against the dead man’s chest, and used his own gun to fire three shots whose sound was muffled by the cushion. Let the clients know the problem was taken care of… double-check some info on Valkorion’s employers… make sure she had the necessary proof available… so much to do in so little time. Valkorion was efficient, and didn’t even make a sound inside that could be heard from the outdoors. A true professional. She nodded to him once he sat. “I suppose they can’t always be interesting in the end,” she said. “But I must also extend the same thanks to you for completing the deed. As well, I thank you for taking the time to come and speak with me. I will try to take as little of it as possible.” She tapped away on the screen embedded in her cybernetic arm. “As I said earlier, I believe I can present to you an agreement that benefits us both. Normally, I am on the watch for highly skilled individuals such as yourself, as I have clients who request such talent. I have enough contacts for them. What I am looking for is a skilled individual for my business.” She turned to regard the cyborg. “I would like to offer you a partnership. I wish to request your skills and services as on ongoing agreement, not simply a one-off job where we both part ways afterwards.” She turned back to her screen and began to sort through some things she would pull up shortly. “As you know, I am well-connected, so you won’t hurt for work. I won’t demand exclusivity, either; I would not care if you kept taking odd jobs on the side. But sometimes I need to see to risky ventures and I would like to have someone of your talent that I can trust, as much as one can trust in our respective lines of work, to ensure things go well. In return, I can offer you information on whatever-or whoever- you seek, steady pay, and other services my network has access to.” She brought up a document, a report by one of her agents, their identity censored. She switched the screen to a holo-display so Valkorion could view it as well. “As a show of good faith, and in return for ending that troublemaker, I would like to offer you some of the aforementioned information. I think you’ll find this rather interesting.” The report contained a written observation as well as a transcript of a conversation. While the agent’s name was redacted, most of the information would be recognizable by Valkorion. Specifically, it was a report regarding the very man who hired him to dispatch his half-brother. The details matched up: the target, the promised reward, Valkorion’s name, and other small details made it clear this was not a fabrication (or a very masterfully done one). The “interesting” part was that they had no intention of paying Valkorion for the job, and were in the process of fabricating some documents to remove their involvement in the target’s death. The meeting place for the after-mission report and payment given to Valk was mentioned… as a place where the half-brother’s business contacts would be waiting. Sending lives in for sacrifice hurt business, could bite you in the ass, and was, to her, a lazy solution. No, she thrived on the puzzle, figuring out a way to move all her pieces to solve a problem without any sacrificial lambs. Deaths happened; it was a dangerous job. But she never sent someone knowingly to take a fall. That was why she was successful. Maybe he would see that, one day. But it was always healthy to maintain some suspicion. She nodded to him. “You are welcome, and thank you as well for disposing of your target. He was giving some of my people a bit of trouble, and I take care of my associates.” She turned to him and offered her hand as a gesture of both thanks and a confirmation of their deal. “Wonderful.
